WELCOME

Ahuge welcome to the Progressive Preschool Awards 2025 – and we can promise you an afternoon packed full of celebrations.

Now in its 13th year – a statistic which will definitely be lucky for some of you in the Nine Kings Suite this afternoon – many months of work have gone in to making sure that today is a true celebration of everything that is great about the preschool industry.

From the product ranges, through to the inspiring retail execution and promotional activities, the innovative marketing and, of course, the companies and people who make it all happen.

And you have all been such an important part of the process; we actually couldn’t have done it without you.

Each year we are blown away by the amount of innovative, engaging, exciting, educational and just sheer fun product entries we receive through our online portal.

This year was no exception and our retail judges were really put to the test – there was so much outstanding product that being named a finalist is in itself a remarkable achievement. To all of you who took the time to

judge the vast amount of entries, a huge thank you, and also to our industry experts who came together to debate for our Validation Panels.

We would also like to say a huge thank you to all of our sponsors and supporters –including Lisa Bryant and her team at Bump PR for keeping the chatter going on social media –and all who helped to create those little extra flourishes which truly make these awards so special… from your friendly meet and greet at the entrance, the light up table centres and special themed menus, plus the ‘higher or lower’ fun.

And, of course, we cannot forget about the traditional PPSA goody bag… on the back of your chair, you will find either a roarsome lion or a friendly giraffe, filled to the brim with goodies for you to take home.

To our finalists, we know there have been challenges this year – indeed, for all of you in this room – but along the way you have found opportunity, new avenues to explore and fresh ways of doing business… we are so proud of this industry and feel immensely grateful to play the part we do.

Back to today – the trophies are lined up and ready for their new homes. You all have an amazing afternoon ahead of you, so please, top up your glasses and settle in for the celebrations.

ARRIVING AT THE WINNERS

We take a look behind the scenes at the entry and judging process for the Progressive Preschool Awards 2025.

The Progressive Preschool Awards (which are owned and organised by Max Publishing, owner of Progressive Preschool Magazine and PreschoolNews.net) recognise and reward excellence across the preschool spectrum – in product, retail execution and initiative, marketing promotions, wholesale/distribution and sustainability, as well as the Outstanding Achievement award for special individuals who have contributed greatly to the industry (with nominations sought by way of recommendation

THE PRODUCT AWARDS

The product categories for this year feature 10 finalists for each of the 12 categories, underlining the wealth of top products in the market across the board and the strong number of entries received through the awards online portal.

Products were judged by both major and independent retail buyers, culminating in a shortlist that has been measured carefully by the very companies and people depended on to stock the best of the best in products for infants, toddlers and children.

“We were impressed once again with the quality and volume of entries we had this year for the PPS Awards; it really has been a great year for entries of new, updated and interesting ranges that have captured the

based on individual achievement, knowledge and performance in the preschool sector).

In addition, for the fifth year, there is a consumer accolade, What Parents Love, presented in collaboration with The Insights Family and uncovering the most trusted brands based on fandom and advocacy by UK parents of children aged 1-3.

The judging process for the categories differs in each case, duly tailored to arrive at the finalists and the ultimate winners.

needs and desires of the buying public,” commented Rob Willis, coo and joint owner of Max Publishing. “It wasn’t easy for our judges, and we want to thank each and every one of them for devoting their time to help us arrive at our finalists.”

The criteria for the Product categories remained the same as in previous years, with all entries required to be new to the market or significantly updated in the last calendar year (1 July 2024 to 1 July 2025), already in retail, with entries either being a single product or a range with up to five products.

The online portal saw a bumper number of entries, which were then judged by key buyers from a wide spectrum of retailers.

THE RETAIL AWARDS

Retailers are at the forefront of the fast moving, ever changing preschool sector and they deserve to be recognised at every level.

Retailers were nominated from all over the UK in the months leading up to the judging.

Following the online nominations, the five major retail categories – Supermarket, Multiple, Mixed, Department Store and Online – were judged by a Retail Validation Panel comprised of experts from across the baby, nursery, toy, apparel and licensing sectors. They were looking for commitment to the preschool product and retail sector, product selection, marketing, display, realising sales potential, retailing environment, customer care and supplier relations and online activity.

The Retail Validation Panel for the majors categories included Christine Roberts, Misirli; Claire Coekin, PlusPlus; Adeline St John, BioGaia; David Sprei, Penguin Ventures; Ffion Aykroyd-Davies, Aykroyds; Neil Montgomery, Magic Company; Sally Carnota, Hasbro; Anne Bradford, Difuzed; Dean Greasley, TDP; Zara Grindrod, Rainbow Designs; Michael De Cotis, Norababy; Matt Harmer, Norababy; Helen Genia, Moonbug Entertainment; Charlotte Hyson, Paramount; and Jessica Dodd, BBC Studios.

The panel was chaired by Progressive Preschool’s publisher Rob Willis, with group editor Samantha Loveday and commercial manager, Jo Cassidy (each of whom did not vote).

Meanwhile, the finalists in the independent retail categories – Nursery, Gift, Toy, Apparel and Retailer Newcomer – were reached from a mix of self nomination and industry nominations from suppliers, reps and agents. They were then judged by industry experts on the same criteria as the major retailers.

THE MARKETING AWARD

The Marketing Award highlights the campaigns which have made an impressive impact upon the preschool product and retail sector over the past 12 months.

The judging was carried out by a group of marketing experts chaired by Richard Pink, md of Pink Key Licensing. He was joined by Paul Godwin (PG Associates); Amber Steventon (Azaria PR); Adeline St John (BioGaia); James Marsh (B3 Creative); Rebecca Deeming-Mitchell (BTHA); Jane Pavia-Davies (Vista Public Relations); Helen Lynch (HL Brand Licensing Consultancy); and Charlie Le Rougetel (Big Top PR).

“In today’s competitive marketplace, consumer engagement with brands has never been more important,” Richard told Progressive Preschool. “We were hugely impressed by the sheer inventiveness and energy that this year’s entrants had brought to their marketing campaigns, which not only grabbed headlines and consumer attention, but which allowed families to join in the fun, too. All the entries were strong; however, after some ‘lively’ discussion, we managed to narrow them down to a shortlist of eight.”
