Inside the Visitor Center at The Factory

For many visitors, The Factory at Franklin is where it all begins. Before they’ve walked the idyllic Main Street or settled into a dinner reservation, they’ve wandered the halls, coffee in hand, taking it all in. It’s the second most visited destination in Williamson County, but for plenty of people, it feels like the first chapter.

And lately, it’s not just visitors. With its ongoing revitalization by Holladay Properties, The Factory at Franklin has once again become an everyday gathering place for locals. It’s where meetings turn into meals, errands turn into afternoons, and just stopping by rarely stays that simple. The energy there is steady and familiar, built on equal parts routine and discovery.

That’s exactly what makes the Franklin Visitor Center at The Factory feel like such a natural fit. Created in partnership between Visit Franklin and The Factory, the visitor center doesn’t interrupt that rhythm; it joins it. Tucked into the flow and sitting just across from Honest Coffee Roasters in the Factory, it offers something deceptively simple: a place to pause, get your bearings, and maybe see the day a little differently.

Inside, the experience unfolds gently. A Plan Your Trip wall offers a visual starting place, mapping out everything from Franklin and Williamson County’s well-known anchors to the kinds of under-the-radar spots that tend to become favorites. It’s the kind of feature that invites you to linger for a minute, and then somehow keeps you there longer.

But what makes this space particularly interesting is who it’s for. Yes, it’s a gateway for visitors. But just as much, it’s a resource for locals — especially those moments when you’re looking for something just beyond your usual routine.

Maybe it’s a last-minute gift that feels thoughtful, not generic. The shelves here lean local: Franklin and Factory-branded keepsakes, small-batch goods, and pieces that carry a sense of place. It’s the kind of retail that saves you from defaulting to the predictable and instead gives you something with a story attached.

Or maybe it’s that familiar question from a friend in town for the weekend, “What should we do?” Instead of scrambling through mental lists or recent recommendations, you can step into the visitor center and get a clear, curated answer. Not overwhelming. Not overly polished. Just helpful.

A vintage stove display anchors part of the space, a subtle but meaningful nod to the Factory’s past as a working manufacturing facility. A wall display introduces you to the menagerie of animals that were hand-carved over the last 30 years to make up the nearby Carousel of Dreams. These touches don’t demand attention, but they reward it. It’s a reminder that even in a place that feels current and evolving, history is never far off. It’s layered in, often where you least expect it.

That sense of layering, past and present, visitor and local, spontaneous and planned, is what the visitor center does best. It doesn’t separate those experiences. It blends them for first-time guests, which might look like building an itinerary from scratch. For locals, it might mean rediscovering a place you thought you already knew.

Because the truth is, Franklin doesn’t stay still. New restaurants open. Events rotate with the seasons. Small businesses evolve. Located just off the toe of Italy’s boot-shaped peninsula, is a beautiful island where rolling hills, volcanic mountains, and coastal beaches meet the sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Sicily entices visitors with ancient ruins left behind by the many civilizations that once flourished there. Greeks, Romans, Phoenicians, Normans, and Moors all shaped its culture, influencing architecture, traditions, and especially its distinctive cuisine — earning it the nickname God’s Kitchen.

The journey begins on the eastern side of the island in Catania, located at the foot of Mt. Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano. Catania is renowned for its striking Baroque architecture, much of it constructed from black lava stone. After exploring the city, visitors can choose from a variety of excursions to experience Mount Etna’s dramatic landscape of smoldering craters, hardened lava flows, and majestic vistas.

Just 45 minutes away lies Taormina, perched on jagged cliffs high above the Ionian Sea. Long celebrated by travel writers as one of the most beautiful towns in the world, Taormina offers charm at every turn. The Funivia Mazzarò (cable car) connects the lively town center to the beaches below and the picturesque Isola Bella.

Within walking distance is the magnificent ancient Greek theater with a spectacular backdrop of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea. Perched above Taormina sits Castelmola, a charming medieval village where visitors can wander castle ruins, take in sweeping views, and sample Vino de Mandorla, the town’s famous almond wine.

The train ride from Taormina to Palermo takes less than four hours and offers spectacular coastal scenery as the rail line hugs the coastline. Along the way, consider stopping in Cefalù, a delightful seaside town known for its imposing Norman cathedral with intricate Byzantine mosaics. Here you can relax on pristine beaches, stroll along quaint streets, and savor classic Sicilian dishes such as arancini (fried rice balls), cioppino (seafood stew), pasta alla Norma, and, for dessert, a heavenly creamfilled cannoli or a refreshing glass of chilled limoncello.

Palermo, Sicily’s vibrant capital, is a captivating blend of history and modern energy. Its ArabNorman cathedrals, grand Baroque palaces, lush gardens, and bustling markets reflect centuries of cultural influence. The most scenic urban corner of Palermo is undoubtedly the Quattro Canti, the point where Via Maqueda and Via Vittorio Emanuele intersect, dividing the city into four historic districts.

Along the winding streets of the old city, you will find stalls full of colorful merchandise and savory street food, which Palermo has become famous for. Visitors should also tour Teatro Massimo, Italy’s largest opera house, famously featured in The Godfather. At night, Palermo comes alive as its illuminated architecture, lively piazzas, and street musicians create an unforgettable atmosphere.

Beyond Palermo lie the rolling hills of the Alcamo wine region, increasingly recognized for its exceptional organic wines. Nearby is the historic city of Marsala, world-famous for its sweet, fortified wine. Visitors can sample local vintages and learn to prepare classic dishes like veal Marsala.

In western Sicily, the coastal city of Trapani enchants visitors with its beautifully restored old town, pedestrian streets, and waterfront promenades. From Trapani, take the cable car up to Erice, a remarkably preserved medieval village and Norman castle settled high above the sea. One of the most magnificent spots in all of Sicily, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the coastline on one side and panoramas of the surrounding countryside on the other. According to Greek mythology, the god Hercules once fought an important battle for the freedom of this mountaintop village. With its ancient ruins, quaint shops, and outdoor cafes, Erice promises a travel experience filled with enchantment and discovery.

On Sicily’s southern shore lies the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, one of the world’s most significant archaeological treasures. It is comprised of seven Greek temples to the gods, as well as the Tomb of Theron and several ancient sanctuaries. The Pietro Griffo Regional Archaeological Museum, located nearby, is an indispensable stop for those who want to learn about the area's history. Strolling amidst the ruins of the Valley of the Temples, one can almost hear the whispers of gods and heroes echoing through the centuries.

Travel further inland to Ragusa, a mountain town shaped by tragedy and renewal. After a devastating earthquake in 1693, the city was rebuilt into two distinct sections: Ragusa Superiore, the newer hilltop town, and Ragusa Ibla, where many historic buildings were carefully restored. Today, Ragusa’s stunning architecture stands as a testament to its resilience and enduring beauty.

As the journey comes full circle back toward Catania, travelers pass through the scenic Hyblaean Highlands, where olive groves, almond orchards, and citrus trees flourish beneath endless blue skies. The island’s crystalline waters, timeless landscapes, and rich cultural heritage leave a lasting impression. And now you know why Sicily deserves its title as the Land of the Gods! n

Limoncello A

TASTE OF ITALY AT HOME

One of the most delightful tastes of Italy is Limoncello. Its bright color captures the sun-soaked lifestyle perfectly in a single sip. Limoncello originated in the southern coastal regions of Italy, where the climate produces intensely large fragrant lemons. However, today, limoncello can be found all over Italy and has become one of the most recognizable after-dinner drinks. Enjoy the refreshing citrus taste and be swept away to the coastal breezes of sunny Italy!

Ingredients & Equipment

Lemons: 10–12 organic lemons, standard or Meyer

Alcohol: 1 bottle (750ml or 1 liter) of high-proof alcohol, such as Everclear (151 or 190 proof) or 100-proof vodka

Sugar: 1 1/2 to 3 cups granulated white sugar, to taste

Water: 1 1/2 to 3 cups filtered water

Equipment: Vegetable peeler, 1-quart or 1-gallon Mason jar, fine-mesh strainer, coffee filters or cheesecloth, funnel, and glass bottles for storage

Instructions

1. Prep Lemons: Thoroughly wash and scrub the lemons to remove any wax.

2. Infuse the Alcohol: Place the lemon peels in a large glass jar and pour the alcohol over them. Seal the jar tightly and store it in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry, for 7 to 30 days. Shake the jar every few days. The alcohol is ready when it is bright yellow, and the peels have lost their color.

3. Make Simple Syrup: In a saucepan, combine the water and sugar. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved. Let the syrup cool completely to room temperature.

4. Strain and Combine: Strain the lemon-infused vodka through a sieve lined with cheesecloth or a coffee filter into a large pitcher or bowl, discarding the peels. Combine the lemon alcohol with the cooled simple syrup and stir.

5. Bottle and Age: Pour the limoncello into bottles using a funnel. While it can be served immediately, letting it age in the refrigerator or freezer for another week or two will improve the flavor.

Tips for the Best Limoncello

Why Organic? Organic lemons are preferred because non-organic lemons are often coated in wax and may have pesticide residues on the rind.

Avoid the Pith: The white pith, the layer between the zest and the fruit, is bitter. If you get any on the peels, scrape it off with a paring knife.

Storage: Keep limoncello in the freezer; it will not freeze solid due to the high alcohol content and is best served ice-cold. It can be kept in the freezer for up to a year.

Adjusting Sweetness: The ratio of sugar to water can be adjusted based on preference. A 1:1 ratio (1 cup water to 1 cup sugar) is a good starting point.

Note: The lemons look pretty fermenting in the glass jar and add interest to a kitchen counter. You can purchase interesting bottles at World Market or online at Amazon. Design your own label and create an interesting gift.

Now you know why I am so passionate about Folds of Honor's mission and why I wanted to give back to this worthy charity. So what’s in store for the open house? The open house is scheduled for Thursday, August 27, 2026, time TBD. Home tour attendees will be greeted with appetizers, drinks, swag bags (limited number), and a chance to register to win a FREE European river cruise, along with other items to be given away. To conclude the event, Music City Publications, Inc. will present Folds of Honor Tennessee with a check representing funds raised through donations and ticket sales profits.

During the home preview, guests will be able to tour and explore the house at their leisure, get decorating inspiration, and see firsthand the quality work of Carbine & Associates and other contractors involved. And upon finding the mystery room, attendees can enjoy a special whiskey tasting.

The two-story modern European farmhouse home is currently under construction in Williamson County. Amy Montgomery, our recently appointed lifestyle editor, is working diligently throughout the build process to ensure the house is perfectly appointed and the event runs smoothly. B.F. Myers Furniture is also a major contributor, as they will be staging and decorating the home.

The objective going forward is for our lifestyle editor to share the building process, from start to finish, and everything in between, for the next 12 months. Sharing tips learned along the way, decorating ideas, and how to make a house a home, while highlighting some of the special projects that played a part in making the house a home. The Architecture of a Home Build

There is something undeniably exhilarating about stepping into a home still in the midst of … becoming. The air carries that unmistakable scent of fresh lumber and possibility, where every beam, every pane of glass, and every carefully placed detail signals a vision coming to life. Where craftsmanship and luxury so effortlessly intertwine, new construction is more than a process. It is a quiet unfolding.

I am thrilled to be part of the open house sponsored by Music City Publications, Inc., and, in my new role as lifestyle editor, it has special meaning. As I have pivoted in life, this was the perfect opportunity to pursue my love of interior design for a good cause, helping to raise funds for Folds of Honor. However, I am excited to share that plans are underway to reopen my shop, Amy Montgomery Home, at a new location in Columbia. More to come on that later!

As this journey unfolds over the next 12 months, I will take you through the building process, share design tips, and everything in between. From styling bookshelves and selecting the perfect color palette to designing a functional scullery, each issue will feature helpful tips and inspiration drawn from the building of this home. First, I’d like to set the stage by sharing a brief overview of the house and the details currently in progress, all of which will be on full display at the grand reveal on August 27, 2026.

Walking through this Carbine & Associates home for the first time in Williamson County, with it still echoing with the sounds of progress, I was reminded that we are not simply witnessing a build, but the beginning of a story. A tale that will soon be filled with beauty, intention, and life. This thoughtfully designed two-story modern European farmhouse blends timeless materials built of bricks softened by Hardie board accents, and a floor plan that gracefully balances beauty and livability.

At its heart will be a peaceful first-floor master bedroom with a soaring beamed cathedral ceiling, and a spa-inspired bathroom with a zero-entry shower, complemented by a freestanding soaking tub that invites restorative pauses at the end of the day. A generously appointed walk-in closet and adjacent laundry room will add a layer of luxury and convenience. The first-floor guest suite on the other side of the house will also feature a zero-entry shower, extending the same level of comfort to visitors.

Upstairs, the home will continue to unfold with two additional bedrooms, each with its own full bath and walk-in closet. Bedroom #4 will feature a beautifully integrated Murphy bed from Nashville Murphy Beds, with a charming builtin desk tucked into the roofline beside it.

The second-floor laundry room will add another layer of convenience, allowing visiting children and grandchildren to tend to their own needs. Altogether, the design anticipates a home filled with life where children return often, grandchildren gather joyfully, and every generation is welcomed.

Thoughtful entertaining will be woven seamlessly throughout the home, beginning with well-placed powder rooms on both the first and second floors, ensuring that guests are always accommodated with ease and privacy, no matter where the gathering unfolds. When it’s time to host, the dining room will set an inviting tone with a custom handmade table framed by built-in bookcases, creating a sense of warmth and understated sophistication.

With the open-concept layout, the kitchen will be functional and beautiful, complete with a well-appointed scullery that allows for effortless hosting while keeping prep work neatly out of sight. From there, the home will open into a handsome living room, where a two-story stone fireplace will anchor the space. Around the corner, there will be a thoughtfully designed first-floor office that offers both functionality and refinement, with custom-built-ins for organized productivity.

As you move upstairs, the home will transition into leisure spaces, including a bonus room and a movie room, perfect for relaxed evenings and family gatherings. Adding just a bit of intrigue, a mystery room awaits. It will be an unexpected and delightful feature revealed at the open house in August.

This home’s outdoor finishing touches will reflect a commitment to modern luxury and livability. The outdoor living area will invite year-round enjoyment, anchored by a fireplace and enhanced by a retractable screened porch that will provide comfort in every season. Lastly, the backyard will feature a tranquil pool setting, complete with a dedicated pool bath to ensure those wet bathing suits are left outside.

As this curated residence takes shape, it will stand as a testament to the beauty of intentional living and the excitement of new beginnings where vision, craftsmanship, and community come together. Dad is the foundation. The steady presence. The one everyone counts on. He shows up for grandkids' games, helps with home repairs, plans family vacations, and is always there when someone needs him. But here's what often gets overlooked: Dad rarely prioritizes himself.

While he's busy taking care of everyone else, his own health might quietly slip down the priority list. And the irony is this — when Dad is strong, energized, and healthy, everyone benefits. He's more present, more engaged, and able to show up fully for the people he loves. The good news? It's never too late for Dad to reclaim his strength and vitality.

Why Men Don't Prioritize Their Health

Men are great at taking care of responsibilities jobs, families, and homes, but when it comes to their own health, not so much. They ignore the aching knee. They skip the annual checkup. They say "I'm fine" even when they're exhausted, stiff, and running on fumes. It's not that they don't care — they're just wired to push through and keep going no matter what.

After 60, the body plays by different rules.

Men lose 3-8% of their muscle mass per decade if they're not actively working to maintain it. Testosterone declines. Recovery time slows. Chronic inflammation quietly builds, driving fatigue, joint pain, weight gain, and brain fog.

Men who were strong and active in their 60s can find themselves struggling in their 70s — not because decline is inevitable, but because they didn't know what their bodies needed.

What Healthy Aging Really Looks Like

Aging well isn't about slowing down or accepting limitations. It's about staying strong and capable so Dad can keep doing the things he loves traveling, playing with grandkids, working on projects, and feeling good in his own body. That means getting up from the floor without help, climbing stairs without getting winded, carrying groceries with ease, sleeping well, waking with energy, and staying sharp and engaged. This kind of vitality requires a proactive approach.

A Practical Plan for Men Over 60

Research shows men in their 60s, 70s, and even 80s can rebuild strength, reduce inflammation, and dramatically improve how they feel. Here's what works:

Build functional strength: Resistance training 2-3 times per week — using bodyweight, resistance bands, or weights rebuilds muscle, strengthens bones, and protects independence. Focus on basic moves like squats, lunges, push-ups, rows, and planks that build real-world strength.

Eat to support the body: Men over 60 need more protein than younger men. Aim for 30-35 grams per meal, along with healthy fats, fiber, and whole foods. Cut back on processed foods and sugar.

Prioritize recovery: Sleep is when the body repairs itself. Poor sleep disrupts hormones and increases inflammation. Dim the lights an hour before bed, turn off the TV, and put down the phone screens interfere with the body's natural sleep signals. Make sleep a non-negotiable.

Aging well isn't about slowing down or accepting limitations. It's about staying strong and capable so Dad can keep doing the things he loves — traveling, playing with grandkids, working on projects, and feeling good in his own body.

Manage stress proactively: Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which drives muscle loss and fatigue. Walking, breathing exercises, or time outdoors help keep stress in check.

Support gut health: The gut drives immunity, energy, and mood. Eating fiber-rich foods vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains reducing processed ingredients, and staying hydrated keep the body functioning well.

Move consistently: Daily movement walking, stretching, light activity keeps joints healthy, circulation strong, and energy stable. Dad's body is still capable of incredible things. It just needs the right fuel, movement, and recovery.

How Families Can Support Dad

Supporting Dad doesn't mean nagging. It means making healthy choices easy and enjoyable. Partner with him. "Let's take a walk together" beats "You should exercise more." Make it about what he gains. Frame it as "staying strong for the grandkids" or "having energy to travel." Celebrate small wins. Acknowledge every workout, every healthy meal, every good choice. Create the environment. Stock the fridge with whole foods. Make movement part of family time.

Dad has spent years being the foundation for everyone else. Now it's time to make sure that foundation stays strong. Decline isn't inevitable. With the right approach, Dad can stay strong, energized, and fully engaged in life for decades to come. Strong fathers build strong families. And it's never too late to start! n

When it comes to home additions or any home renovation project, I can’t help but think of the truism I first heard coming out of graduate school and into the real world of architectural design: “Fast, good, and cheap … pick two.” The simple truth is that you can’t have all three; something cannot be good AND fast AND cheap at the same time. Understanding timelines and having realistic expectations for the process aid homeowners in achieving a successful project. As entertaining as shows on HGTV are to produce, these shows have made it more difficult for contractors and designers due to unrealistic expectations. Many homeowners are led to believe that even the most complicated projects can be completed in a few months and under budget, or that a smaller project like a bathroom renovation can be completed over a weekend.

If you have decided to invest in updating or adding to your current home, it is well worth your while to allow time for both the design and construction processes to ensure the highest quality and outcome. Obviously, timelines should be within reason, but a quick fix usually doesn’t equal a long-lasting product.

This was such the case with the renovation and addition of an existing one-bedroom/one-bath cabin. The homeowners loved the existing stone fireplace, and its story of how the original owner had collected stone from the surrounding farm to build it by hand. The focus was to build around it so that it may remain the central point of the home. The cabin was expanded to include three bedrooms, a primary suite, and two bathrooms. The living spaces were doubled in size, and a new wraparound porch was added. The result was a design that provided the program for the owners to better use their home with their growing children and to have a more direct connection with their surrounding farmland.

Another such project, though with fewer programmatic changes, underwent a substantial visual transformation with the addition of a porch. This home was built in the early 1900s and had glimpses of what it once was, but over time and through various ownerships, the charm that once was there had been covered and details stripped away to make way for more modern, simpler materials and uses. It took the right homeowner to see through these layers, understand the house’s true character, and know what it needed to breathe life back into it.

The home had been loved and lived in for some time, and the owner was finally ready to bring to life the design they had been envisioning. First was the foundation. This home, like most homes of its time, was built with little to no crawl space. Many homes were built with the floor joists sitting directly on the earth beneath. With the structure so close to the ground, it increases the likelihood of mold and moisture buildup and limits access to utilities that may need repair or relocation. This house had settled a good deal over the past century, so it was decided to lift the entire house and raise the foundation.

The original wood siding was rotted in many places due to poor water drainage from the hip roof above. Much of the trim around windows and doors was in disrepair. The siding was removed and replaced, along with all the windows, to give the home a new layer of protection and improve its overall energy efficiency.

Last was reimagining the exterior and its relationship to the rest of the property. There was an existing porch, but its size and connection to the interior were limited, thus restricting its use. To fit the homeowner’s lifestyle and desire to have more outdoor space, the porch became the main focus of the design. The addition extended the existing porch around the side of the home, providing more areas to sit and take in the crisp Tennessee air rolling off the hills nearby. A screen porch was added adjacent to the dining room with a vaulted ceiling and a stone wood-burning fireplace (See photo on page 54)

The result was an addition that looked as though it had always been there. The design accomplished the owner’s goals while preserving the historical charm. Both projects involved homeowners with a clear vision of what they wanted, full architectural design, and knowledgeable contractors who worked as a team to make each home better than it was found. The Food Pyramid Gets a Makeover

The new food pyramid has sparked significant conversation and even some controversy. But before exploring what’s changed in the new food pyramid, it’s important to understand why we need to begin these difficult, sometimes uncomfortable discussions. The way we eat today isn’t always helping our bodies thrive, and in some cases, it may be doing more harm than good, contributing to unhealthy outcomes. As Dr. Mark Hyman stated, “Food is not just calories, it is information. It talks to your DNA and tells us what to do. The most powerful tool to change your health, environment, and entire world is your fork.”

I have been on an insulin resistance soapbox with my patients for at least a decade. In extremely simple terms, insulin resistance is a super-tired pancreas that cannot keep up with the level of glucose in the bloodstream. I cannot count how many times I have uncovered insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, or even full-fledged diabetes in the unsuspecting patient. I frequently remind patients that, in today’s world, unless you’re intentionally supporting insulin sensitivity through your lifestyle and nutrition choices, you may be unknowingly overworking your pancreas.

Having elevated glucose in your bloodstream is about one of the most poisonous things you have lurking in your body. High glucose levels destroy tissues, cause cellular dysfunction, and lead to rampant inflammation. This is why the pancreas releases insulin when glucose levels rise, to bring them back down. Dr. Casey Means stated in her book Good Energy, “Refined added sugar causes astronomically more deaths and disability per year than COVID-19 and fentanyl overdoses combined. We need to see refined sugar for what it is: an addictive, dangerous drug that has been included in 74 percent of the foods in the U.S. food system and for which the body needs zero grams in a lifetime.”

Currently, our country is in an insulin resistance and obesity crisis. If you have not yet read The MAHA Report, created by the Make America Healthy Again Commission, I would encourage you to do so. The link is provided at the bottom of this article for reference, but let's review a few of the extremely sobering findings from the report. One in five children over the age of six is obese, 75% of American youth are ineligible for military service primarily due to obesity and Diabetes, and 70% of children's calories come from ultra-processed foods.

After examining the realities surrounding nutrition and chronic disease in our country, it’s time to look at the cultural shift in health that this new food pyramid brings. Its core message is refreshingly simple: focus on eating real food, defined as whole, unprocessed, non-modified foods. This shift would transform our country's health crisis, and the new food pyramid promotes real food, which is a huge win.

No one can argue that ultra-processed food is healthy. In fact, after the introduction of processed foods in the 1950s, our rates of obesity have tripled. According to Dr. Casey, these ultra-processed industrial foods are chemically engineered to be addictive and make up nearly 70 percent of the calories that people in the United States consume today.

I encourage my patients to eat as many different whole foods as they can. I try to use simple suggestions, such as having as many colors on their plate as possible or making a 10-plant smoothie. I encourage shopping at the farmers' market to support local farmers and try new foods. The diversity in whole foods feeds the microbiota (the trillions of bacteria living in our gut) and microbiome (the ecosystem of our GI tract). Eating as many colors as possible provides our bodies with essential phytonutrients that support cellular function and detoxification.

The new food pyramid also prioritizes protein. Again, I encourage my patients to get protein from trusted sources as local and organic as possible. A steak from your local farmer via a cow raised on grass is completely different from a steak from a cow raised on corn in a feedlot. Protein is essential to helping us not overeat, maintaining muscle mass, and promoting cellular recovery. Realfood.gov provides appropriate portion sizes and daily protein recommendations based on your age and size.

A note on fats. The new food pyramid advises using olive oil, butter, or beef tallow instead of seed oils. It still advises that this should be a very small percentage of daily calories consumed. When in doubt, use olive oil. It has been around for thousands of years and has stood the test of time. Personally, I look forward to seeing more unbiased studies on seed oils in the future, not biased by the food industry.

Lastly, if you take nothing else from the new pyramid, take this away. Sugar is not on the new pyramid at all with excellent reason. If Americans could modify their intake of unnecessary sugar, we could make a shift in our health crisis. Critics want to highlight the controversial points, such as dairy and red meat being prioritized on the food pyramid, but let's focus on the huge wins of this shift rather than getting lost in the weeds. n

A Storied Home on School Street

In neighboring Maury County, just moments from the Columbia town square and framed by tree-lined streets, stands a home that quietly carries more than a century of stories. Located at 902 School Street, this beautifully restored residence is not only a striking example of early 20th-century architecture but also a living link to the people and moments that helped shape Maury County.

Constructed in 1912 for J.M. Hodge, the home reflects a period of growth, optimism, and civic pride in Columbia. As a former mayor, Hodge commissioned a residence that reflected both his prominence and the era's enduring craftsmanship. Designed in the classic American Four-Square style, the home was built with balance, proportion, and longevity in mind. These qualities remain evident more than a century later.

The Four-Square was prized for its generous room sizes, natural light, and thoughtful layout, and those characteristics remain beautifully intact at 902 School Street. Tall ceilings, expansive windows, original pocket doors, and carved fireplace mantels speak to a time when homes were designed for connection, spaces meant to host conversation, family life, and meaningful gatherings.

In 1914, just two years after its construction, the home entered what would become its most enduring chapter when it was purchased by Aileen Figuers, shortly after her marriage to Thomas Norfleet Figuers Jr. Aileen would remain here until her death in 1972, making her the home’s longest-serving steward and firmly anchoring it in Columbia’s personal and social history.

Through marriage, Aileen became connected to one of Maury County’s most historically significant families. Her father-in-law, Thomas Norfleet Figuers, was a decorated Civil War veteran of the 32nd Tennessee Infantry and a recipient of the CSA Cross of Honor. Her mother-in-law, Harriet Pointer Cheairs Figuers, was the niece of Nathaniel Cheairs IV, builder of Rippavilla Plantation, tying the home’s story to a broader regional legacy.

It is easy to imagine evenings spent within these walls, each story passed from one generation to the next, with reflections on family and history shared in rooms designed to gather people together. For nearly sixty years, 902 School Street was not simply a residence, but a place of continuity, memory, and shared life.

That legacy of care continues today. Thoughtful restoration has preserved the home’s original character while elevating it for modern living. Original hardwood floors, restored woodwork, and timeless architectural details remain beautifully intact, complemented by curated upgrades that introduce a quiet sense of luxury throughout.
