M AT T P O U C H E R ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATE & DESIGN PROFESSIONAL
Stevenson Residence, Washington Independent Contracting
Contracted for the full design and development of this three-story Passive House, integrating high-performance building systems with a strong connection to its wooded site. The program includes a basement-level shop, a primary living level with bedrooms, baths, kitchen, and living spaces. All with an open loft above. Passive strategies shaped the architecture, including thick exterior walls for enhanced winter insulation and a vertical ventilation strategy that draws warm air upward through the loft and out upper operable windows during the summer. Front and rear porches extend the living spaces into the landscape, connecting with existing site pathways, and placing the rear porch views directly within the forest canopy.

Anchorage Residence, Alaska Architectural Staff II
This custom Anchorage residence and cabin draw inspiration from a historic 1918 home originally located on the site, reinterpreting its character within a contemporary residential program. My role included code research, design development, permit documentation for the cabin, interior design, and architectural detailing for the main residence. The project balances new construction with the history and character of the property, creating a cohesive relationship between the home, cabin, and weather of Alaska.
Mt. Vernon Residence, Washington Independent Contracting
The design process for this custom home began with iterative “bug models” to study massing, roof geometry, and the relationship between the home’s primary volumes. Selected concepts were then developed through detailed 3D modeling, refining the final architectural form, spatial layout, and connection to the site. This iterative process helped establish a cohesive custom home responsive to both program and framing views of the surrounding landscape.
McCall Residence, Idaho Independent Contracting
I contributed to the design development of this custom residence through 3D modeling used to study exterior form, material selections, and architectural character. I also developed several of the home’s primary interior spaces, including the kitchen, living room, butler’s pantry, dining area, and laundry room. The living space was designed around a more open volume with exposed wooden beams and a visual connection to the loft above.
White Salmon Residence, Washington Independent Contracting
Contracted for design development of this custom bluff-top residence. Through 3D modeling and using iterative studies to refine the exterior material palette and develop the outdoor deck and recessed firepits relationship to the site. My interior scope included development of the kitchen, living, and dining spaces, as well as leading the design of a dedicated 360° Dolby Atmos entertainment room. I also developed key outdoor living areas, including the exterior deck and a recessed firepit positioned near the bluff to take advantage of the expansive views.

Custom Middle Housing Development in Seattle, Washington Architectural Designer
I contributed to feasibility and schematic design for a Seattle middle housing project incorporating a primary SFR, AADU, and DADU. Early work included layout studies, lot coverage analysis, zoning and code research, and energy compliance. Followed by the development of full permit and construction documentation utilizing BIM workflow and documentaton. I also helped develop the primary interior spaces, including bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, living, and dining areas. The project was advanced through iterative client meetings and review cycles, with design decisions refined in response to feedback, site constraints, and code requirements. I also supported the City of Seattle permit review process through subsequent revisions and coordination.

The Washington Starter Home Plan Townhouse Design Competition challenged designers to develop compact, affordable, and repeatable townhome prototypes suited to communities across the state. The proposal focused on a 14’ × 28’ three-story unit designed for offsite construction, with stacked wet walls, efficient circulation, flexible living spaces, and three distinct architectural styles. All of which utilized a similar floorplan. The design was also tested across multiple site conditions to demonstrate adaptability to typical Washington lots, corner parcels, and larger multi-unit developments. This compact townhouse maximizes a 14’ × 28’ footprint with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, laundry, and open shared living space. Efficient vertical planning minimizes circulation while supporting couples, families, multigenerational households, and work-from-home needs. Three exterior options adapt the same affordable, repeatable plan to varied Washington neighborhood contexts.

Front Loaded Townhome | Thornton, Colorado Architectural Associate
This front-loaded townhome was developed as part of a larger planned community incorporating multiple residential building types and shared community space. My role focused on the full development of design, permit and construction documents including this front-loaded townhome as well as other building types. My work included coordinating with our urban planner to align building footprints, developer-required square footage targets, and the firm’s architectural and urban design intent.

Naples Residence, Florida Independent Contracting
This extensive renovation reimagined several primary spaces within a large Naples residence, including the foyer, library, kitchen, dining room, reading room, and piano room. The design focused on modernizing the interiors while maintaining a cohesive architectural language throughout the home. As part of a three-person design team, I worked directly with the clients through iterative SketchUp studies and design reviews, developing custom furniture, finishes, millwork, lighting, and cabinetry. Key features included a UV-bonded glass table, a custom cast dining set, and a sculptural dining-room ceiling concept I helped develop, with angled planes radiating from a central octagon. Drawing inspiration from seashell spirals, and with the intent to reflect different gradients of the coastal sun on each ceiling plane. Photos by Method & Concept

Fisher Island Residence, Florida Design Engineer
This custom Fisher Island residence blends a classical architectural vernacular with a more contemporary interior language, using traditional materials and detailing in new ways. The home was developed as a fully custom interior, from millwork and furnishings to lighting, finishes, and built-in elements. Key spaces include a dining room incorporating the client’s Napoleonic art and artifacts, a living room with an integrated aquarium, custom seating, and built-in entertainment wall. As part of a three-person design team within a design-build studio, I developed custom concepts through 3D modeling and SketchUp. These iterative studies were used directly with the client to refine design decisions and translate concepts into artisan-level interiors fabricated in-house.
