At the February 6, 2024 village meeting, I shared with former Mayor Ron Gardiner that several surrounding cities and villages recognized and scheduled events celebrating Black History Month. I expressed disappointment that Glenwood, a village that is over 70% African American, did not have any events scheduled to recognize the contributions of residents to the town and society, therefore; I created this newsletter to highlight as many as possible in this and future issues as well as other community concerns - Deborah Birmingham, M.Ed., M.A
From a young age, my mother instilled in me the importance of hard work and doing my best She emphasized that voting was not just a right but a responsibility. Now, as we face the reality of the Supreme Court gutting the Civil Rights Act, the lessons from mothers ring even louder our voices matter, and voting is how we honor those who taught us
Resilience is another cornerstone of these maternal lessons. Look at what Leon Fields and Robert Maddox spearheaded they refused to accept defeat when others said Glenwood-Lansing Road repairs would be very difficult to achieve Their persistence, seeking out help from other agencies, reminds us that giving up is never an option

We also see those lessons come to life during our recent Community Cleanup Day That day was about more than picking up debris it was about neighbors working side by side, helping one another, and investing in the place we call home. It reflected the values many of us learned from our mothers: care for your community, lend a hand, and leave things better than you found them

The U.S Supreme Court’s ruling raises the standard for proving voting discrimination, making it more difficult to challenge voting maps and practices that may disproportionately impact African American communities For many observers, this signals a narrowing of long-standing protections that were designed to ensure fair representation and equal access to the ballot The potential impact is far-reaching, particularly in communities where historical barriers to voting have required continued vigilance and advocacy.
As I reflect on the mission and momentum of the Power Rising Conference in Chicago, I am reminded that this moment demands more than awareness—it demands action. I had the opportunity to meet women from across the country, and together we listened, shared, and reinforced the importance of voting while stressing the urgency throughout our communities and organizations to protect civil and voting rights. I firmly believe eligible voters can no longer sit on the sideline Not voting only adds insult to the work of previous generations who fought for a better life for African Americans and a country that truly reflects and stands by We the People I see a clear responsibility for citizens, organizations, pastors, and local leaders to educate our communities on what is at stake and ensure every voice is informed and empowered.
Moving forward, I believe we must be intentional and strategic in our efforts I am calling on our community to host voter education sessions in our churches, schools, and community spaces; to actively register new voters and re-engage those who have become discouraged; and to remove barriers by organizing transportation, sharing accurate information, and promoting early voting. This is not just about participation—it is about preservation of voice, legacy, and progress If we work together to educate, register, and mobilize voters, we can honor those who came before us and ensure that our voices continue to shape a future grounded in equity, representation, and opportunity

Shonda’s commitment to education is not just a chapter in her career it is a defining thread that has shaped her life s purpose With more than a decade of experience in higher education she has consistently stood in the gap for students navigating uncertain paths From 2009 to 2019, Shonda served as a recruiter and academic advisor at Northeastern Illinois University, where she worked to guide prospective and current students through the complexities of college access, enrollment, and academic success In that role, she developed a strong foundation in student advocacy meeting individuals at critical decision points and helping them move forward with confidence
That foundation carried seamlessly into her work as a Student Support Consultant at Prairie State College where her impact became even more personal and profound Drawing from both her professional experience and her own journey as a “late bloomer,” Shonda connected with students on a deeper level offering not just guidance, but understanding Reflecting on her path, she shares, “I had my own journey through the educational system, and seeing myself on the other side made me want to give back to those facing the same challenges.”
At Prairie State College, Shonda worked closely with students facing real-life barriers homelessness, financial hardship, and a lack of readiness for the college experience Rather than viewing these as obstacles too great to overcome, she saw opportunities to intervene with purpose
She connected students to critical resources encouraged persistence and helped them build confidence in their ability to succeed Her presence became a source of stability for many
Students often returned to her, not out of obligation, but out of trust Many would say I don’t want to see anyone else you ’ ve really helped me ” That level of connection speaks volumes about her approach one rooted in listening, patience, and genuine care
For Shonda the reward was never just in seeing students enroll or complete courses it was in witnessing transformation It was in those moments when a student who once doubted themselves began to believe again And through it all, she remained grounded in her purpose: to ensure that every student she encountered felt seen, supported, and capable of achieving more

One moment in particular continues to stand out A nursing student, overwhelmed by balancing work school, and life, came to Shonda ready to give up Instead of offering surface-level encouragement Shonda guided her through a real and honest perspective helping her weigh short-term challenges against long-term success
She recalls telling the student, “School is temporary. It’s a short period of time—so which one is going to weigh out better?” That moment shifted everything The student broke down in tears, realizing she had the strength to continue She embraced Shonda in gratitude, a gesture that spoke volumes Reflecting on moments like these, Shonda shares “Those are the impacts that let me know I’m doing a good job that I’m making a difference ”
TRANSITIONING WITH PURPOSE: REAL ESTATE
Real estate entered Shonda’s life as a practical decision, initially serving as a way to pay down student loan debt But over time, it transformed into a passion-driven career Drawing from her own experience as a single mother purchasing her first home she found her purpose in helping others do the same She explains, “My ‘why’ has changed. Now my passion is helping women and single mothers see that they can achieve homeownership too.” That lived experience allows her to connect deeply with her clients guiding them with both knowledge and empathy

Shonda strongly believes that education, financial literacy, and homeownership are interconnected Through her work, she has seen firsthand how a lack of financial understanding can create long-term challenges

For Lynne Martin, service has always been more than a career it has been a calling rooted in purpose, discipline, and a deep commitment to helping others. H distinguished journey with the Internal Revenue Service began on October 1, 19 when she entered as a Grade 5 Revenue Agent. Through dedication a continuous growth, she rose through the ranks and retired as a Grade 14 leade an achievement that reflects both her professional excellence and her unwaver integrity.
Lynne’s career path was shaped by both intention and adaptability Origina pursuing a degree in sociology with plans to enter the legal field, she discovere passion for accounting and returned to school to earn a second degree. T decision would ultimately define her trajectory in federal service. Early in career, she found fulfillment in helping individuals and businesses navigate the complexities of the tax system “I just like helping people and making sure they did the right thing with the tax system,” she shared a guiding principle that carried her throughout her career.
As Lynne advanced, she moved into leadership roles within Technical Services, where she reviewed audits, ensured compliance, and worked closely with tax court attorneys. Her responsibilities included overseeing complex cases and maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and fairness. In reflecting on her time within the agency, she also acknowledged the influence of respected leaders within the organization, including Leon Moore, who was among the highest-ranking African American officials in the IRS at the time. His presence and leadership stood as a powerful example of excellence and representation within the agency, reinforcing the importance of professionalism and upward mobility for others within the system
Lynne also belongs to The Association of the Improvement of Minorities at the Internal Revenue Service (AIM-IRS). Lynne served as chapter president, Regiona Vice- President of the Midwest Region, and currently the Parlimentarian for the national organization.
NATIONAL IMPACT
One of the most transformative experiences of Lynne’s career came during her seven-month assignment in Washington, D.C., where she collaborated with professionals across the country on a national initiative to improve IRS procedures. Her work focused on streamlining the process from tax filing to case closure, with the goal of reducing stress for taxpayers. This opportunity allowed her to travel to multiple locations including Kansas City, Ogden, Utah, Texas, and Philadelphia gaining a comprehensive understanding of how the system operated nationwide.

A Weekend of Film, Creativity, and Community at Governors State University
I had the pleasure of attending the Chicago Southland International Film Festival, presented by Governors State University, held April 16–19. For a nominal cost, the festival offered an impressive weekend of cinema, creativity, and meaningful engagement with filmmakers from near and far. I was especially interested in attending and supporting this film festival because my daughter has created, written, and produced short films. Through her journey, I have come to understand and deeply appreciate the amount of time, discipline, and resources it takes to bring a creative vision to the screen From the opening night reception to the red-carpet experience, complimentary popcorn, and a wide range of film screenings, the event created a welcoming and exciting atmosphere for everyone who appreciates storytelling through film.
Throughout the weekend, I enjoyed viewing and rating several short films across various genres. The festival featured the work of filmmakers ranging from high school students to seasoned professionals, showcasing international shorts and local feature films in a three-day celebration of exceptional cinema. What made the experience even more memorable were the lively Q&A sessions with writers, producers, directors, and cast members, who shared insight into their creative process, character development, themes, and the challenges of bringing their stories to life
One of my personal highlights came after the viewing of Thank You for the Ride, Aileen, when I had the opportunity to ask Harvey Pullings, II (the 79 streetkid) about his characters and the film’s point of view. I was thrilled to learn the following week that his film won Best Drama. Congratulations to Harvey Pullings II and to all of the filmmakers who shared their creativity, vision, and courage with the world. In 34 days, we leave for Ghana.
This will be my 9th cohort with the Governors State University Public Health Brigade -- and our program’s 11th year. I still pause when I say that out loud. It's a humbling thing.
Over the years, 152 students, alumni, and community members have said yes to this experience across Ghana, Panama, and Nicaragua They came curious, sometimes uncertain, always courageous. They left changed.
And every single time - so have I.

Progress doesn’t always come quickly but it does come to those who refuse to give up. For years, residents navigating Glenwood-Lansing Road faced frustrations dodging potholes that damaged tires, cracked windshields, and tested patience. Many voiced concerns, only to hear the same response: “It’s the county’s road nothing can be done.” Yet, instead of accepting defeat, committed community members like Leon and Denosia Fields, alongside Robert and Lovee Maddox and other determined residents, chose persistence over frustration As Leon shared, “We didn’t drop the ball we continued to push the ball forward.” Their belief in the power of collective voice became the driving force behind real action

COMMUNITY PRIDE CLEANUP DAY
On Saturday,April 25, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. groups of residents who volunteered to assist in the Glenwood Village wide clean-up program met in designated locations. We organized and distributed bags and gloves, issued instructions and assignments. The largest group met at Hickory Glen Park; the volunteers ranged in age fromteenstothoseintheirnineties
There were four old cheerleaders in the group, students from Bloom High School and two good neighbor work teams The students will receive community service hours The good neighbor work teams received the satisfaction of helping their fellow neighbors improve the curb appearance of the properties. Those who picked up litter and debris work diligently and unselfishly in filling bags of trash to beautify our community. “These are they” who deserve to be commended. The morning closed with a community E-waste Collection Drive and coffee andconversationwithMayorHart.
I want to take a minute to briefly thank you Mayor Hart, your administration, and your staff for the effort and time they put forth into making the village wide clean-up come together then there is the Beautification Committee that I consider to be the best of the best, that includes my wife and daughter, and others that attended all eight meeting The HOAs and Associations and Organizations the Glenwood- Lynwood library districtandCookCounty. Finally, last but not least, the residents that have shown community pride by addressing curb appearance issues even with the two recent storms; and especially all the volunteers.
