On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass delivered a fiery, unforgettable speech at Corinthian Hall in Rochester, New York a bold and urgent call to conscience titled “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” This timeless oration challenges us even today to examine the meaning of freedom, justice, and American ideals A Celebration... But for Whom?
Douglass didn’t mince words: “This Fourth of July is yours, not mine You may rejoice, I must mourn” While America celebrated independence, millions remained in chains He praised the courage of the Founding Fathers but exposed the painful paradox of a nation built on liberty while denying it to so many A Fire, Not a Gentle Shower

For more than half a century, Betty Magness has stood on the front lines of civic engagement, leadership, and the fight for equality Today, as Illinois Political Director for the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, she continues to inspire new generations to become informed, involved, and committed to strengthening democracy.
Her journey began long before Rainbow PUSH was established. In 1968, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, she joined Operation Breadbasket with one simple question: "What can I do to help?"
While many participated in marches and demonstrations, Magness discovered that every movement also needed people willing to serve behind the scenes.
"I found out they could use people who had administrative skills," she recalled "Eventually I was able to march and picket with everyone else, seeing how crucial it was that you remain nonviolent "
Her story reminds us that meaningful change requires people with many different talents. Whether organizing events, managing logistics, educating voters, or marching peacefully, every contribution helps move a movement forward

Why the Rainbow PUSH Convention Still Matters
Each year, the Rainbow PUSH Convention gathers elected officials, educators, business leaders, clergy, students, labor leaders, entrepreneurs, and community advocates from across the nation to discuss the issues shaping America's future
For Magness, its importance has never been greater She believes too many Americans no longer understand how government decisions directly affect their daily lives. "The importance of voting cannot ever be understated."
She explained that many people wonder why grocery prices, gasoline prices, housing costs, and other everyday expenses continue to rise without recognizing that public policy and elected leadership influence those realities
"When people attend the convention, they receive information they may not be getting anywhere else."
The convention serves as more than a gathering of distinguished speakers It is a classroom for democracy, equipping citizens with knowledge that empowers them to make informed decisions at the ballot box and within their communities.
Every Vote Truly Counts
One of the strongest messages throughout the interview centered on the power of every individual vote
"Every vote counts."
Magness explained that many elections have been decided by only a handful of votes in individual precincts, proving that participation truly makes a difference
She also spoke passionately about the Jesse L. Jackson Sr. Youth Empowerment Act, legislation designed to allow eligible high school seniors to register before graduation while strengthening civics education in Illinois schools.
The legislation reflects one of Reverend Jesse Jackson's longheld dreams:
Students should graduate with a diploma in one hand and a voter registration card in the other.
The measure not only encourages voter registration but also requires students to understand the purpose of government, civic responsibility, and why their voices matter
Communities Must Teach Democracy
Magness believes preparing informed citizens cannot rest solely with schools
She challenged churches, businesses, civic organizations, fraternities, sororities, neighborhood associations, and community groups to work together in teaching the value of civic participation
"A number of people died for that right," she said. "For people to ignore it is an injustice."
Her message reminds us that democracy survives only when each generation accepts the responsibility to educate, mentor, and encourage the next
Investing in Tomorrow's Leaders
Perhaps the most heartfelt portion of the conversation came when Magness reflected on young people
Rather than simply encouraging them to vote, she challenged them to build relationships with older generations who have experienced history firsthand.
"Young people should get involved...listen to seniors in their communities, and seniors should listen to them."
She believes mentoring creates stronger leaders by helping young adults understand government, public service, and how lasting change is accomplished
One of the most inspiring examples she shared was the remarkable journey of Minyon Moore Today, Moore is recognized nationally as one of America's most respected political strategists and served as Chair of the 2024 Democratic National Convention. Yet Magness proudly recalls that Moore's leadership journey began through Rainbow PUSH and Reverend Jesse Jackson's historic 1988 presidential campaign.
"Minyon Moore came out of Rainbow PUSH and the Jesse Jackson 1988 campaign. She trained under me, and she was chairman of the Democratic Convention two years ago."

For Magness, Moore's accomplishments represent exactly what Rainbow PUSH has always sought to achieve developing leaders who will one day influence communities, shape public policy, and inspire future generations
She noted that this year's convention reflected that same commitment by bringing together an impressive intergenerational panel that included former Secretary Hillary Clinton, former Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Reverend Dr. Leah Daughtry, Congressman Jonathan Jackson, former Tennessee State Senator Justin Jones, Viva Gupta, and Minyon Moore. Together, they demonstrated how experienced leaders and emerging voices can work side by side to strengthen democracy and encourage civic participation
Reflecting on her own legacy, Magness shared perhaps the most moving words of the interview.

For four decades, Holy Family School has stood as a beacon of hope for children and families on Chicago's West Side. Founded in 1985 in the heart of Cabrini-Green with just 40 students, the school was built on a simple but powerful vision: to provide children from underserved communities with the same quality education often associated with affluent suburban schools.
Today, Holy Family School serves nearly 300 students and continues to transform lives through academic excellence, character development, faith formation, and community support. Few people understand that mission better than Chaplain Leslie Hunter, who has served Holy Family School for 28 years and whose personal journey is deeply intertwined with the institution's story.
I am a product of this ministry," Hunter shared "Had it not been for people committed to being there for me and helping provide resources and opportunities, I don't know where I would be today."
ROOTED IN FAITH AND PURPOSE
Holy Family School was established through the vision of Holy Family Lutheran Church and the leadership of Pastor Charles Infelt What began as a small school operating in rented spaces eventually grew into a thriving educational institution supported by generous donors, community partners, and believers in the school's mission.
The current school building, opened in 2007, stands as a testament to what can happen when a community invests in its children.
For Hunter, the ministry's impact is personal. Growing up in Chicago, he experienced many of the same challenges faced by the students Holy Family serves today
"I moved sixteen times before college," Hunter recalled "But no matter where I lived, I always knew how to get to Holy Family Church It was an anchor in my life "
That anchor provided stability, mentorship, and hope during difficult times. Today, Hunter dedicates his life to providing the same support for the next generation.
SEEING GREATNESS IN EVERY CHILD
At the heart of Holy Family's philosophy is the belief that every child possesses unlimited potential
Hunter credits Pastor Infelt with teaching the importance of affirmation and helping children see their worth.
"We light up for them, and they see us light up," Hunter explained. "They don't have to fully understand it yet. They can borrow our eyes until they can see it for themselves." This culture of encouragement helps students develop confidence, resilience, and a sense of purpose.
Holy Family students proudly refer to themselves as "Go Getters" a mindset that encourages them to face challenges head-on rather than be discouraged by them.
"We believe nothing is impossible," said Hunter "Our students learn they can do all things through Christ who gives them strength "
By the time students leave Holy Family, the goal is for them to view obstacles not as barriers but as opportunities for growth
PREPARING STUDENTS FOR LIFE
While academics remain central to Holy Family's mission, the school is equally committed to preparing students to become compassionate leaders and engaged citizens Hunter encourages young people to discover their unique gifts and talents and use them in service to others
"Be who you are," he advises "We need you What you have to offer matters. There is a place in this world where your gifts can make a difference."
Whether in education, ministry, science, business, the arts, or community service, Hunter believes everyone has a calling. "Service is something we all can do," he said. "The question is not whether you can serve, but how your unique gifts can help others."
BUILDING BRIDGES FROM CHICAGO TO GHANA

Recently, Holy Family School has expanded students' understanding of the world through studies of African countries and growing connections with Ghana
The school's generosity was demonstrated through the donation of iPads to support educational efforts connected to the Governors State University Public Health Brigade and Ghanaian students
While the partnership is still evolving, Hunter sees tremendous opportunity ahead.
"We're excited to continue learning how we can connect more, grow more, and expand awareness," he said.
These international connections help students understand that education, service, and leadership have no boundaries and that communities across the globe can learn from and support one another.

We know you've been waiting to hear all about it Our 2026 GovState Ghana Public Health Brigade Team showed up and showed out in the most amazing ways. Are you ready? Here we go!
We were warmly welcomed by our incredible Global Brigades Ghana team: Program Coordinators Eunice Quansah and Edward Quansah, drivers Sammie, Eric, and Abdul, and security officer Sgt. Collins of the Ghana Police Service. After gathering our 24member team and loading up our luggage, we began the 4+ hour drive to our compound in Anomabo.
The ride was long, but it offered our students their first real glimpse of our host country -- the colorful billboards, bustling traffic circles, roadside vendors, houses punctuating the hillsides, neighborhood businesses, and everyday life unfolding before our very eyes. By the time we arrived at Weda Lodge, we were exhausted from the 1 1/2 days journey, but the breathtaking hilltop view overlooking the coast reminded us exactly why we had come.
One of the greatest gifts of these first two days was the presence of Governors State University President Joyce C. Ester, PhD who chose to experience Ghana alongside our students. President Ester met us at the Weda Lodge and joined the Brigade for our Day 1 Welcome to Ghana orientation She spoke to the students about their value and impact in the world Dr Ester also participated in our community tour of Ekumpoano on Day 2, walking beside students as they learned about the community, its strengths, and the partnerships that have connected GovState, Global Brigades, and Ghana over the years Her presence underscored the University's commitment to global learning, service, and transformational education
After the community tour, Day 2 quickly moved from orientation to action After meeting beneficiary families and learning more about the impact of our work, our students split into 5 teams, rolled up their sleeves, and began construction on the biodigester units that would provide families with access to indoor toilets for the very first time It was hot, challenging work, but our Brigaders embraced it with enthusiasm, teamwork, and determination
These first two days set the tone for everything that followed: learning, humility, leadership, hard work, cultural exchange, and service rooted in respect and partnership.
