The African proverb "It takes a village to raise a child" reminds us that a young person's success is never the work of one person alone Whether the child is our own or simply a resident of our community, each of us has a role to play in shaping the next generation of leaders. Financial support, mentorship, family guidance, and prayer all matter, and together these acts of care form the foundation upon which a child's character and future are built.
This month, I celebrate that truth in the lives of Melvin Mack, III, Malachi Taylor, and Altarique Beasley, whose families and communities have poured into them, and in the tireless work of the Nellie Prather Foundation volunteers, who continue to prepare our ad. in
This isn't just about facing adversity; it's about seizing an opportunity to build a stronger future. We must continue to invest in our children's education. If ever there was a time for our young people to pursue higher education or learn a trade, it is today. Our community is rich with talented students who have the ability to become engineers, doctors, lawyers, lab technicians, teachers, electricians, masons, construction workers, and the many other professionals we desperately need Their potential is not in question What remains is whether we, as a village, will show up to help them reach it
On February 3, 1952, a young evangelist named Billy Graham stood on the steps of the Capitol and called on the nation's leaders to humble themselves in prayer, trusting that a nation grounded in faith could weather any difficulty before it. That same spirit of faith belongs in our communities today We cannot control every obstacle our children will face, but through prayer and steadfast belief, we can equip them to meet those obstacles with courage rather than fear Faith does not remove the challenges ahead; it gives our children and our community the strength to walk through them and come out stronger on the other side Billy Graham Peace Rally Prayer
I've worked with students and parents for many years, and I have shared in the excitement of preparing families for this new chapter in life through mentorships, financial resource information, and volunteering. I have seen firsthand how a single conversation, a shared resource, or a few hours of guidance can change the trajectory of a young person's future. That is why I know supporting our youth doesn't require grand gestures or deep pockets. Let's rally around our students, offering them motivational support and pooling our resources in ways both large and small It can start with something as simple as the "Loose Change Challenge," in which families, organizations, churches, and businesses collect loose change over a week, a month, or a year and use those funds to provide school supplies, cover registration fees, or fund scholarships What seems like a small effort can make a significant difference in helping a student cross the threshold into higher education
The families of Melvin Mack, III, Malachi Taylor, and Altarique Beasley, along with the volunteers of the Nellie Prather Foundation, have shown me what the village looks like when it shows up fully, with encouragement, guidance, and sacrifice. Now I extend that same invitation to you. “In Illinois, we understand that we cannot build a more just future if we are unwilling to confront the injustices of our past,” Pritzker said “This legislation ensures that Emmett Till and his mother Mamie Till-Mobley will never be forgotten, their legacy will continue to challenge us to be better, and their example will continue to inspire us to build a state and a nation that lives up to its highest ideals ” Pritzker signed the legislation, House Bill 4323, at Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in Bronzeville, the site of Till’s funeral that was designated a national landmark by President Joe Biden in 2023.

You wanted the two men that murdered you son to go to jail but because of the color of their skin, they didn’t go to jail and the judge let them roam around free Because of that, many people and especially African Americans heard the case of Till and saw the open casket Many African Americans saw that racism was a big thing because of the color of their skin; they wanted justice for them and Emmett Till

The recent passing of Mr George E Johnson prompted me to pause and reflect on the extraordinary legacy of a man whose life exemplified faith, perseverance, generosity, and service Mr Johnson was far more than a successful businessman. He was a trailblazer who transformed lives, strengthened communities, and demonstrated that true success is measured not only by financial achievement, but by the lives we upliftalongtheway
AsIreflectedonhislife,mythoughts returned to my college years Like many business students, I searched for examples of visionary entrepreneurs who overcame tremendous obstacles to build lasting companies I found that inspirationinGeorgeE Johnsonand Johnson Products Company For one of my college business marketing presentations, I chose to research Johnson Products because I wanted to understand how an African American entrepreneur had built one of the nation's most successful companies despite the barriers of racismanddiscrimination.
The more I researched his journey, the more I admired not only his business success but also the values that guided his leadership That presentation became much more thanaclassassignment Itbecamean enduring lesson in perseverance, integrity, and servant leadership that has remained with me throughout theyears
Mr Johnson, founder of Johnson Products Company, makers of the iconic Afro Sheen and Ultra Sheen hair care brands, built his company on a simple yet profound principle: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." That Golden Rule shaped every aspect of his business andhisrelationshipswithemployees, customers,andthecommunity
I also remember my college years because members of my family worked for Johnson Products. My sister would often send me packages filled with hair care products and cosmeticsformeandmyfriends She loved sharing stories about Mr Johnson walking through the company cafeteria, smiling as he jokingly told the women, "You don't look as beautiful as you should. You must not be using some of the productswehaven'treleasedyet."
Everyone laughed because many had already sampled the newest products. His comments reflected not criticism, but his warm personality, playful spirit, andgenuineaffectionforthepeoplewho workedwithhim
Those stories reinforced what my research had already taught me Mr Johnson believed employees deserved far more than a paycheck He believed they deserved opportunity, dignity, respect, and a chance to build a better futurefortheirfamilies.
His remarkable journey was not without obstacles He faced discrimination, unequal opportunities, and the realities confronting many Black entrepreneurs of his generation Yet he refused to allow those barriers to define him Instead, he responded with excellence, innovation, determination,andunwaveringfaith.
His perseverance culminated in history when, in 1971, Johnson Products became the first African American-owned company listed on the American Stock Exchange That achievement was more than a corporate milestone It represented hope and possibility for countless aspiring entrepreneurs who finally saw someone who looked like themsucceedonWallStreet.

One passage especially touched my heart Mr Johnson wrote about consideringleavinghisbusinessbecause he believed he should devote more time to serving God. Taylor's college decision was not made overnight After considering both Michigan State University and Illinois State University, he visited the ISU campus and quickly realized it offered the environment he was looking for
"When I visited Illinois State, it had everything I wanted," Taylor said "Thecampusfeltright,thefacilitieswereimpressive,andthere wereplentyofclubsandactivitiesthatinterestedme."
For Taylor, choosing marketing was about more than selecting a major It was about opening doors to a variety of career possibilities while developing skills that will benefit him throughout life
"I've always been interested in how companies work," he explained "Business gives you many career paths and helps you develop communicationandleadershipskills"
Outside the classroom Taylor plans to become an active member of campus life He hopes to join a Sports Marketing student organization and the Black Student Union, where he can meet new people, build professional relationships and learn from experienced mentors
As he prepares to leave home, Taylor offered thoughtful advice to students entering their senior year of high school
"It's never too late to improve," he said. "Keep working hard, finish strong,anddoeverythingyoucantoraiseyourGPA"
He also understands that the transition to college can be emotional for families His message to parents is one of confidence and encouragement "Trust the children you've raised," Taylor said "Believe they can handle college and the responsibilities that come with becoming adults."
Taylor believes communities also have an important role to play in helping students succeed beyond high school He hopes local businesses organizations, and civic leaders will create more internships and employment opportunities for college students during school breaks "Internships and job opportunities can help students gain experienceandpreparefortheirfuturecareers,"he said

As I looked around the beautifully decorated outdoor celebration hosted by the Nellie Prather Foundation, I found myself deeply moved The Foundation truly went all out to celebrate Altarique Beasley's Truck Party, creating an afternoon filled with joy, laughter, encouragement, and an abundance of delicious homemade dishes prepared with love Yet, it wasn't the decorations or the wonderful food that touched me most It was the overwhelming love that surrounded one remarkable young man Watching Altarique embraced by several women he affectionately considers his "mothers" brought tears to my eyes They hugged him, encouraged him, laughed with him, and celebrated one of the most important milestones of his young life It was a beautiful picture of what happens when a community chooses to invest in its children
As I watched these extraordinary women surround Altarique with unconditional love and admiration, I couldn't help but think of the timeless African proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child."
Years from now, when people read about Altarique Beasley's accomplishments, they will also be reading the story of the many "mothers," mentors, volunteers, family members, teachers, and community supporters who stood beside him every step of the way. Their investment in his life has become part of his success story. That spirit of gratitude was reflected throughout Altarique's interview.

As family, mentors, volunteers, and friends gathered to send him off to Illinois State University, Altarique reflected on what the moment meant to him
"Honestly, I can't be anything but thankful and grateful. There are not many people who have had the opportunities that I've had or have met the people I've met. I'm so lucky to have the people in my life who have helped teach me independence and prepared me for adulthood. I wouldn't have wanted my high school years to go any other way." His words revealed a young man who understands that success is never achieved alone It is built through encouragement, guidance, opportunity, and the willingness of others to believe in you
When the conversation turned to those who have made the greatest impact on his life, Altarique immediately spoke with deep admiration and affection about Ms. Rosemary Prather, Executive Director of the Nellie Prather Foundation.
To him, she has been far more than a mentor She has been family "Ms Rosemary was another one of my first moms She took care of me I was living in her house She provided me with networking opportunities that allowed me to grow in ways I never imagined She's done things for me that I never thought anyone would do for me "

As another class of graduates prepares to leave home and begin the next chapter of their educational journey, one Glenwood student is embracing the future with gratitude, humility, and a desire to one day serve the very communities that helped shape him
Melvin Mack III, a graduate of the prestigious Urban Prep High School, has already achieved an impressive milestone before stepping onto a college campus. Through his hard work and determination, Melvin was accepted into more than 40 colleges and universities across the country and was offered four full four-year scholarships After carefully considering his options, he chose to begin his college journey at Illinois State University, where he will major in Criminal Justice
Inspired by generations of family members who have dedicated their lives to law enforcement, Melvin hopes his education will prepare him for a meaningful career protecting and serving others.
"I've been inspired by my family. Many members of my family are in law enforcement," Melvin shared Although he has not yet selected a specific area within criminal justice, he sees college as an opportunity to explore his interests, grow professionally, and prepare for a career where he can make a positive difference Leaving home is both exciting and bittersweet Like many first-year college students, Melvin looks forward to experiencing life beyond his hometown while also recognizing the challenges that come with greater independence He is eager to experience the Bloomington-Normal community, meet people from different backgrounds, participate in campus organizations, and become involved in student life One of his goals is to join a fraternity and build friendships and leadership skills that will enrich his college experience At the same time, he admits the hardest part of leaving home will be missing the people who have supported him throughout his life
"My biggest challenge will be going away and not being able to see my family every day," he said Despite beginning this exciting new chapter, Melvin's long-term vision remains firmly rooted in Illinois After earning his degree, he hopes to return home, begin his career, and use his education to strengthen the communities that invested in him

"Take it slow and process everything as it's being told to you. You don't want to grow up too fast."
