At the February 6, 2024 village meeting, I shared with (then) Mayor Ron Gardiner that several surrounding cities and villages recognized and scheduled events celebrating Black History Month. I expressed disappointment that Glenwood, a village that is over 70% African American, did not have any events scheduled to recognize the contributions of residents to the town and society, therefore; I created this newsletter to highlight as many as possible in this and future issues as well as other community concerns.

Standing Together in Challenging Times
We're facing some significant challenges with the recent "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" (H R 1) and it's more crucial than ever that we come together as a community. This new legislation will have far-reaching impacts on our air quality, the mental health of our veterans, our education system, and even our access to food and resources The time for us to be informed and to support one another is now
60 years after Medicaid was signed into law, Trump’s ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’ is chiseling it back Jul 30, 2025 WASHINGTON (AP) On this day in 1965, President Lyndon B Johnson signed legislation into law that launched Medicaid, creating a U S health care safety net for millions of low-income Americans in what would become one of the crowning achievements of his domestic legacy
A year earlier, he did the same for food stamps, drawing on President John F. Kennedy’s first executive order for the development of “a positive food and nutrition program for all Americans ” This summer, with the stroke of a pen, President Donald Trump began to chisel them back. Investing in Our Future: Our Children and Our Community
This isn't just about facing adversity; it's about seizing an opportunity to build a stronger future We must continue to invest in our children's education If ever there was a time for our young people to pursue higher education or learn a trade, it is today. We have talented students in our community who have the ability to become the engineers, doctors, lawyers, lab technicians, teachers, electricians, masons, construction workers, and other professions we desperately need
Small Change, Big Impact: Empowering Our Youth
Let's rally around our students, offering them motivational support and pooling our resources. This can start with something as simple as ‘The Loose Change Challenge’ - families, organizations, churches, and businesses collect loose change for a week, month, or year and use the funds to provide school supplies, registration fees, or scholarships This seemingly small effort could make a significant difference in helping our students pursue higher education
Rolling Up Our Sleeves: Glenwood's Strength
We are not helpless We are strong, especially when we work together Our parents, grandparents, and ancestors faced and endured challenges, and so can we We have a choice: sit back and watch our community struggle, or decide that we are capable, determined, and willing to roll up our sleeves to help our children, neighbors, and our community.
This newsletter highlights the challenges we face but also celebrates the accomplishments of organizations and individuals who are laser-focused on serving our community and society We want to encourage our young people to pursue their aspirations boldly, undeterred by obstacles.
So, with this issue of Glenwood Did You Know, I urge all residents to pull up your sleeves! Let's work hard and be determined to help our young people and community If not us, who? We cannot wait for others; we must be business of helping one another and moving forward despite challenges. It's our future, and our children are we don't work to make Glenwood a better community, who will?
We can, and we must. Let's get together, gather our loose change, and do whatever we can to help put a you through school, whether it's high school, junior college, trade school or university Let’s get together and gather our experience and help our neighbors and seniors Glenwood has the talent, Glenwood has the people Glenwood can be the thriving community we all desire, even in challenging times Let's do everything we can to be successful.

Statement of Appreciation – 4th of July Parade and Celebration
I was truly honored to serve as the Grand Marshal for this year’s 4th of July Parade. The community turnout was nothing short of spectacular—from our youngest residents to our most senior neighbors, everyone came together in a spirit of unity and pride.
The parade and the family picnic-style Taste of Glenwood event that followed created a sense of togetherness that we hadn’t seen in years. The evening music in the park and the delicious food, generously donated by our local businesses, made it a truly memorable day.
I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to all the organizers, our elected officials, and especially to the residents of Glenwood for making this celebration such a resounding success. It was a true reflection of our village spirit.
Thank you all!

grandfather being a pastor and many relatives being talented musicians. Arpris, he says, was destined to be a singer"!
Making Melodies and Ministering
You can find Arpris's beautiful original songs on YouTube, Amazon, CD Baby, and Spotify under the name Sheron Davis He's diligently working on his full album and has even collaborated with other artists!
Arpris's musical journey has taken him far and wide He's traveled extensively, ministering through songs with renowned artists like Walter Whitman, Vashawn Mitchell, and Ricky Dillard. His heart for service extends beyond the stage too; for the past eight years, he's dedicated himself to home care, providing vital support in our community.
Overcoming Challenges with Grace
Perhaps the most inspiring part of our conversation was hearing about the immense challenges Arpris has faced Two years ago, he bravely navigated significant spinal and vocal cord issues, requiring metal plates in his throat and resulting in near-total deafness in one ear. Yet, through it all, his faith and determination have shone brightly. He spoke of how he relies on God's strength to push through and continue ministering to others, truly embodying his belief that "if you don't go through, there's no testimony." His resilience is simply admirable!
A Vision for Glenwood's Music Scene
Arpris's ultimate goal in music isn't fame or fortune, but to "minister to people of God" and leave a legacy of touched hearts He dreams of a Glenwood Gospel Fest, a community event that would bring people together through uplifting music and celebrate the rich local talent we have. He emphasized the unique benefits of supporting our local artists – we're here, we understand our community, and we're committed!
This amazing artist is also eager to spearhead a music festival committee in Glenwood! He believes a broader music festival could be a wonderful outlet for young, talented individuals in our neighborhood, giving them a platform to express themselves through various art forms, not just singing
Community Support in Challenging Times
Drawing on his experience in healthcare, Arpris shared valuable insights on navigating potential changes to social programs He encouraged everyone to be proactive about their health, explore options like home care, and most importantly, come together as a community "Pray, ask God for guidance, and try to reach out to most people that you know, or even the ones that you don't know, we got to come together to try to work together," he urged His vision includes creating dedicated days for seniors to access vital information and resources, strengthening our collective support system.
I’m so grateful to Arpris Sheron Davis for sharing his inspiring story. His unwavering dedication to both his art and our community along with passion and vision are truly a gift to Glenwood!

Pollution
The ingredients of air pollution
Cars, trucks, and buses produce air pollution throughout their life cycle, including pollution emitted during vehicle operation and fuel production. Additional emissions are associated with the refining and distribution of fuels and to a lesser extent, manufacturing and disposal or recycling of the vehicle.

The following are the major pollutants from motor vehicles:
• Particulate matter (PM) One type of particulate matter is the soot seen in vehicle exhaust Fine particles less than onetenth the diameter of a human hair pose a serious threat to human health, as they can penetrate deep into the lungs PM can be a primary pollutant or a secondary pollutant from hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxides Diesel exhaust is a major contributor to PM pollution.
• Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). These pollutants react with nitrogen oxides in the presence of sunlight to form ground level ozone, a main ingredient in smog. Though beneficial in the upper atmosphere, at the ground level this gas irritates the respiratory system, causing coughing, choking, and reduced lung capacity VOCs emitted from cars, trucks and buses which include the toxic air pollutants benzene, acetaldehyde, and 1,3-butadiene are linked to different types of cancer
Nitrogen oxides (NOx). These pollutants form ground level ozone and particulate matter (secondary) Also harmful as a primary pollutant, NOx can cause lung irritation and weaken the body's defenses against respiratory infections such as pneumonia and influenza.
Carbon monoxide (CO). This odorless, colorless, and poisonous gas is formed by the combustion of fossil fuels such as gasoline and is emitted primarily from cars and trucks When inhaled, CO blocks oxygen from the brain, heart, and other vital organs Ting
Sulfur dioxide (SO2). Power plants and motor vehicles create this pollutant by burning sulfur-containing fuels, especially diesel and coal. Sulfur dioxide can react in the atmosphere to form fine particles and, as other air pollutants, poses the largest health risk to young children and asthmatics.
The BP refinery in Whiting was criticized by Carolyn Marsh, an administrator of the Facebook group BP Whiting Watch for a lack of transparency on the company’s part who failed to alert the community Susan Thomas, Director of Legislation and Policy at Just Transition Northwest Indiana criticized BP and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management saying they looked the other way on oversight and enforcement, long owed to this region Both benzene and hydrogen sulfide are highly toxic and can be fatal in very high concentrations. Exposures to high levels of benzene can cause dizziness, headaches, tremors, unconsciousness, and leukemia. Traffic and Truck Accidents
Trucks cause damage to the road, not to mention the railroad crossings. I complain of the road condition and need for repaving from the intersection of Glenwood-Dyer and Glenwood- Lansing road east to bridge crossing 394. Once you cross the bridge Glenwood- Lansing road i.e. 45 Ave has been recently paved to Calumet Ave thus LYNWOOD, LANSING, and MUNSTER have roads as smooth as a baby’s bottom with the exception of Glenwood We are still waiting for an adequate response
Perception
Drive down Cottage Grove SOUTH of Glenwood Lansing Road you will see trucking businesses offering truck and trailer and cargo box parking storage and etc.,. notice the increase in truck traffic and cars drivers taking risk to avoid being behind the trucks, in addition look at the trash thrown out of the vehicles who did not do this when the land was green space The perception is the area is a dump; these businesses are less than 7 blocks from the residents of Glenwood
Let me cut through the chase. We have trucks polluting and running pass our three schools, our apartments, condos, and homes, our shopping/strip mall, and rehab/ retirement housing. These deadly trucks should be routed down State Street away from our old fragile residents and our children who could spend up to 9 yrs. in this toxic area. If other villages can do it, so can Glenwood In a board presentation a developer wanted Glenwood to annex a property on Joe Orr Road east of Cottage Grove The Board stated they had the authority to reroute the truck traffic away from Glenwood So we ask you to reroute the truck traffic with a truck free zone to protect Glenwood’s most viable residence, our children, your elderly and our diseased residents.

Impact on Impact on Impact on Glenwood’s Medical Assistance & Education Glenwood’s Medical Assistance & Education Glenwood’s Medical Assistance & Education
Given Glenwood’s provision of medical assistance via ambulance services and its reliance on Medicaid reimbursements, the recently passed federal tax bill could potentially affect our village in the following ways.
Impact on Ambulance Services and Medicaid Reimbursement
"A significant concern for Glenwood is the potential impact of the federal tax bill on our ambulance services, particularly as some of our residents are Medicaid recipients. Currently, the Village provides medical assistance on an as-needed basis through our fire department's ambulance fleet. We rely on partial reimbursement from the State of Illinois, which in turn receives funding through the federal Medicaid program.
If the federal tax bill results in reductions to Medicaid funding or changes to how Medicaid is structured at the federal level, this could directly impact the amount or reliability of reimbursement Glenwood receives. Any reduction or delay in Medicaid funding could strain our local budget, forcing us to either absorb a greater share of the cost or reconsider service levels.
We will need to closely monitor how federal and state agencies respond to these changes. Glenwood must be prepared to advocate for sustained or improved funding levels to ensure continued emergency medical response capabilities for all residents, especially our most vulnerable populations."
This is my take on one aspect of Bill's potential impact on our community.

1. Student Aid & Federal Grants to Education
Pell Grants
Eligibility now excludes those whose Student Aid Index is above twice the maximum Pell award, or who already receive full-cost coverage via other grants, so some students lose Pell even if they previously qualified
Part-time (12–14 hours/week) students are no longer eligible; they must be full-time (15+ hours).
A provision to expand Pell to short-term workforce training was removed.
Student Loans
Parent PLUS and Grad PLUS loans are eliminated, restricting borrowing:
Graduate students face caps of $20,500/year (≤ $ 100,000 total), while professional degrees (e.g., medicine, law) have caps of $ 50,000 per year ($ 200,000 total).
A new lifetime cap of $257k on all federal borrowing.
Income-driven repayment plans are reduced to just two options: deferment for unemployment/financial hardship ends, and forgiveness is extended from 20–25 years to 30 yrs.
K–12 Voucher Program & Tax Credits
Introduces a federal tax-credit voucher system for private school scholarships (one-to-one donation credit, uncapped total federal cost, but states must opt in beginning in January2027)
Estimates indicate that it could divert $26 billion over 10 years from public schools.
Bottom line for student aid: Cuts and caps reduce support for low income, part time, and graduate students, while expanding private school voucher funding at the expense of public education funding.
The details of these cuts are being codified and will have a profound impact on the Glenwood student population.

Making a Difference: The Heart Behind the Nellie Prather Foundation Making a Difference: The Heart Behind the Nellie Prather Foundation
hed the Nellie Prather Foundation in memory of her beloved , who tragically er imagined how far-reaching her mission would become What began as a heartfelt effort to support young people in foster care has blossomed into a vital community lifeline that touches countless lives every single day.
"I started this organization to help and support young people who were in difficult situations those who weren't in traditional mother-father homes and found themselves in foster care with nowhere else to go," Mrs Prather shares The foundation's roots run deep in the Glenwood community, where Nellie had worked tirelessly at Miss Bester Daycare and with youth from Hickory Bend. Her legacy of compassion continues to inspire every aspect of the foundation's work today
From Youth Mentoring to Community Food Pantry
As Rosemary Prather began mentoring young people, she noticed something heartbreaking: the children were always hungry. Many weren't getting the nourishment they desperately needed, and some were living with elderly caregivers who struggled to keep up with their needs This revelation sparked the foundation's evolution into operating a full-service food pantry that now serves families throughout the community
"After moving into the food pantry, we got so many people families that were in need of food. I just couldn't believe how many families would visit us, mainly senior citizens waiting for their checks to come on the 1st of the month with no food," Mrs Prather explains The foundation doesn't just provide groceries; they also distribute deodorants, detergents, and other essential household items that families need to maintain their dignity and health
A Shopping Experience with Dignity
What makes the Nellie Prather Foundation's approach special is their commitment to treating everyone with respect and dignity Rather than pre-packing bags of food, they've created a shopping experience where visitors can choose what they want and need "They come in here and choose and pick what they want We have a meat counter where they get the meat, snacks, and things like that We don't want a situation where we make a bag and then they go outside the door and throw it away because that's not what they want," Mrs. Prather notes.
Thanks to partnerships with organizations like Whole Foods, the foundation is able to provide healthy, fresh options for families Every item is carefully packaged in Ziploc bags to ensure safety and freshness for their patrons The foundation operates with the highest standards of cleanliness and organization, ensuring that every visitor feels welcomed and valued
Nellie
Nurturing the Next Generation
While the food pantry serves immediate needs, the foundation's youth mentoring program addresses long-term community health Working with children ages eight to thirteen, volunteers provide the kind of guidance and exposure that can change life trajectories "We take young boys to the barbershop young boys that are not getting that in the homes they're in. We try to provide that for them to let them know that you're important, you look good, you walk with dignity, know who you are, you're going places," Mrs. Prather explains.
The foundation recently took thirteen kids to see the Sky game at Wintrust Arena, an experience that was completely new for many of them "Some of the kids had never been to anything like that They see it on TV, but to go and sit in an arena and see the entertainment this was so exciting for them," she recalls. These moments of exposure and joy are intentional investments in the community's future.
A Growing Need in Uncertain Times
As discussions around changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) continue, Mrs Prather recognizes that the foundation's role may become even more critical. "It looks like they're taking SNAP away from people. It's going to be a situation that we're going to face, not far and not long from now, where families are going to need what we're doing here," she observes This reality makes the foundation's work more urgent and necessary than ever
The foundation particularly serves senior citizens on fixed incomes who struggle to make ends meet between monthly checks. These community elders, who have given so much throughout their lives, often find themselves choosing between medication and meals. The foundation ensures they don't have to make that impossible choice.
How You Can Help
The Nellie Prather Foundation thrives on community support and is always looking for ways to expand their impact They welcome volunteers to help with the food pantry, which operates from 11 AM to 2 PM. Volunteers are needed to pick up food donations, help with distribution, and maintain the clean, organized environment that makes visitors feel comfortable
Monetary donations are particularly valuable, allowing the foundation to purchase necessary supplies like Ziploc bags for food packaging and funding for mentoring activities like taking kids out to lunch or dinner. The foundation also accepts donations of canned goods and dry goods, though they cannot accept opened items or anything requiring refrigeration College students studying social work or education are especially encouraged to volunteer as mentors, and retired educators are welcomed with open arms The mentoring program meets once a week on weekends for just a couple of hours, but the impact on these young lives is immeasurable
Looking
Forward with Hope
"If we expose our kids early on in life, we don't know what our community can become," Mrs Prather reflects "Some people just think about themselves and don't think about the other youth that's coming up So if each one could reach one "
The Nellie Prather Foundation stands as a testament to what's possible when one person's grief transforms into a community's hope Through Mrs Prather's unwavering dedication and the support of countless volunteers and donors, Nellie's legacy continues to grow, nourishing bodies, minds, and spirits throughout the community As Mrs. Prather puts it, "God has blessed us. He's the one that has opened doors for different organizations to help us." The foundation's work continues to expand, touching more lives each day and proving that when we care for one another, entire communities can flourish
The Nellie Prather Foundation food pantry is open 11 AM to 2 PM and welcomes volunteers, donations, and anyone in need of support. For more information about volunteering or donating, please contact the foundation directly.

A 1965 Bonneville A 1965 Bonneville A 1965 Bonneville Vietnam and the Power of Faith and Family Vietnam and the Power of Faith and Family Vietnam and the Power of Faith and Family
Joe MayesJoe MayesJoe Mayes
There’s something truly special about a classic car, especially when it carries more than just chrome and horsepower Sometimes, it holds faith, history, and the promise of a safe return For Joe Mayes, a proud Vietnam veteran, the 1965 Pontiac Bonneville sitting in his garage is so much more than a vehicle It’s a heartfelt testament to his father’s unwavering belief that his son would come home.
Before Joe shipped off to Vietnam, he had only put a mere 3,000 miles on that beautiful Bonneville. He even thought about selling it, but his father had other plans “Your mother and I will pay it off,” his father told him with conviction “And when you come back, it’ll be waiting You’re coming back it’s already done ” This powerful declaration, brimming with both confidence and conviction, became a profound source of strength for Joe while he served overseas
Joe endured some of the harshest conditions of the Vietnam War, witnessing and experiencing things many of us wouldn't even want to imagine. Yet, his challenges didn't end there. Upon his return, dressed in his uniform, he traveled from Colorado to O'Hare, only to face a disheartening reality: no taxi would pick him up Cab after cab refused him service a stark and painful rejection after he had bravely served his country It was a single, compassionate cab driver who finally offered him a ride, acknowledging his sacrifice and kindly taking him home This act of kindness stood in stark contrast to the dismissive treatment he received from others, highlighting the profound struggles many returning veterans faced during that era But through it all, faith and family remained his anchors
The iconic "Why Not" license plate on Joe's Bonneville tells a story of its own. When he initially tried to get a personalized plate, his desired option was not available He responded, “Why not?” The clerk then suggested, WHY NOT as a possible alternative Joe embraced the idea, realizing its deeper meaning "Why not?" became a powerful affirmation, reflecting his resilience and optimistic outlook despite the challenges he had faced The plate is unique, as no one else has that particular combination, making it a truly personal emblem
Today, that very car, now a beautifully maintained showstopper, has been passed through generations. Joe's son and grandson have both had the honor of driving it, and each time it rolls, it brings a wave of pride, cherished memories, and a powerful reminder of survival “This car gives you confidence,” Joe shared with a warm chuckle, noting how even his grandson rode with undeniable pride in a recent car show
Beyond the gleaming chrome and heartwarming memories, this story reflects something even deeper: the vital importance of veteran support groups. “There are things you don’t want to carry alone,” Joe wisely shared. “You need people who’ve been there. Having a group to talk to makes all the difference.” These communities provide a safe space for veterans to share their experiences and find healing together
Now, Joe loves to share stories with his grandchildren, showing them precious artifacts from his time in the service including his old boots and duffel bag He teaches them what it truly means to walk with courage, and lovingly reminds them that even when history feels heavy, healing and hope can always ride alongside it.
Closing Note:
Joe’s story is a powerful reminder of how much faith, family, and fellowship truly matter especially for those who’ve given so much May we continue to listen, support, and honor our veterans, not just with our words, but with our heartfelt actions

Ready to Make a Difference
I sat down with Mariyah, a future Kentucky State University student, to talk about her goals, her worries, and the wisdom she’s bringing with her to campus. Her passion for nursing is clear, and her determination is an inspiration. Get to know Mariyah as she prepares to start her college journey!
What is one big goal you hope to achieve while in college?
My biggest goal is to successfully complete the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. It's a challenging path, but I'm ready to work hard to achieve it and become a nurse.
What’s a challenge you anticipate in college, and how are you preparing for it?
I think my biggest challenge will be managing my time and avoiding distractions There's so much going on, but I'm going into it with a plan: I'll make sure to get my schoolwork done first before I do anything else.
Outside of your major, is there a subject or topic you're curious to learn more about?
I'm really curious about forensic psychology I recently had an internship where I was exposed to it, and I was fascinated by how it combines law with understanding the human mind
What's a valuable lesson you've learned from your family that you’re excited to bring with you to campus?
My mom and grandma are both nurses, so they've taught me to work hard and pay attention to the details Their advice has always been to focus on my work and to put my best effort into everything
Is there one thing you hope to learn in college that you can eventually bring back and share with your local community? I want to come back and share the importance of volunteering at local hospitals and shelters. It's so vital to give back to the community that helped me get to where I am
What's one thing you were worried about that no one seems to be talking about as you begin your college journey?
I'm really worried about the financial cost of college. Being an out-of-state student, the cost per semester is a lot, and it's a huge burden. I just wish the high cost of college was talked about more and that more could be done to make it more affordable.
With so many opportunities at Kentucky State University, what's at the top of your college bucket list? I'm definitely going to homecoming! I missed it last year, and I can't wait to be a part of it I also plan to join a student organization, either track and field or cheerleading. As a nursing major, I know how important it will be to have an outlet to take a break from my studies.
What's your best piece of advice for high school students as they prepare for college?
Start early! Take as many college classes as you can while in high school And don't believe anyone who tells you your grades don't matter they absolutely do. Your hard work in high school can lead to scholarships and opportunities that will make your college journey a lot smoother
Any final thoughts you'd like to share as you head off to KSU? I just want to encourage everyone to follow their dreams It's not always easy, but you have to keep pushing through it Your goals are within your reach!

Mariah Smith Mariah Smith Mariah Smith
I recently had the incredible opportunity to chat with Mariah Smith, a truly inspiring Glenwood resident who's making waves in the world of pageantry and community development! Mariah's passion is infectious, and her vision for empowering young Black women is absolutely amazing
From College Pageants to Community Impact
Mariah's journey into pageantry began in college, where she discovered that the experience was about much more than just looking pretty "It really opened my mind to bigger things," she shared, emphasizing how it shaped her professional development and made her a stronger woman. This transformative experience sparked her desire to create similar opportunities for other young women across the country.
Mariah is the proud director and owner of Ms Black pageants in several states, including our own Illinois She strategically chose these states to address a vital need: promoting community development and providing platforms for social impact in smaller Black communities She saw a gap where young women needed a voice, and she stepped right in, leveraging her ability to connect with contestants on their level.
Inspired by Every Black Woman
Mariah's vision is deeply influenced by every Black woman she encounters – from little girls to seasoned leaders "I get empowered to think like I can help them," she said, highlighting her drive to support and guide others She's also keenly aware of the rich history of Black women in pageantry, noting that 2026 will mark the 100th anniversary of the first documented Black pageant!
Building her brand hasn't been without its challenges Mariah, with her strong personality and clear vision, has faced pushback, but these obstacles have only made her more determined "Those pushbacks did shape me into a better businesswoman," she explained, sharing how she's secured trademarks and found ways to move forward, no matter what.
Pageantry as a Force for Good
For Mariah, pageantry is a powerful tool for community service. Her queens select a platform and actively address issues within their local Black communities Imagine a "Miss Black Glenwood, Illinois" dedicating her year to local initiatives and then sharing her impactful work on stage! It's all about tangible results and social change, with these young women acting as "young politicians" and "agents of change "
Mariah's commitment to community runs deep – she's a community development major at Prairie View A&M University and plans to pursue a doctorate in Urban Planning. Her pageant work seamlessly aligns with her academic goals, ensuring that community well-being always comes first.
A Vision for Glenwood's Future
Looking ahead, Mariah envisions a new generation of Black women finding their voice in pageantry, encouraged by her upcoming Black Pageant Awards launching next year She's creating safe spaces for these young women to thrive through professional development, career readiness, and personalized coaching, helping them redefine beauty and excellence
When it comes to Glenwood, Mariah is passionate about growth and new initiatives, especially for youth She proposes a youth activities board where residents with diverse skills, from master gardening to auto mechanics, could teach and mentor young adults. Despite budget concerns, Mariah firmly believes in thinking creatively and leveraging community resources. "If you just want to do it, education it's free for kids," she stated, emphasizing the importance of community collaboration to support our youth.
If she were appointed "Community Engagement Coordinator" for Glenwood, Mariah would hit the ground running on Day One, connecting with residents on their terms – whether through social media, newspapers, or community meetings – to bridge gaps and foster engagement She is actively developing proposals for youth programs and plans to present them to village officials, bringing other passionate residents with her Her dedication to Glenwood is truly inspiring!
What's one piece of advice Mariah would give to her younger self? "You already have everything that you need. Don't freak out, like God has already equipped you. You're good."
Inspiring Change: A Conversation with Miss Black Heartland USA
Sparking Dreams in Young Hearts Sparking Dreams in Young Hearts Sparking Dreams in Young Hearts
I first met Ambria Hughes, Miss Black Heartland USA 2025 at the Village of Glenwood Juneteenth Artist Exhibit As we discussed her journey, her face lit up as she shared one of her most meaningful experiences. "The most surprising and heartwarming aspect so far has been seeing little Black girls being shocked in all the best ways," she reflects warmly "I've had so many young Black girls run up to me with millions of questions about pageantry. There's this incredible spark of interest I'm seeing "
The Lotus Movement: Preserving Culture While Growing Beauty from Challenging Waters
One encounter particularly moved her: a little girl approached and asked, "Wait, pageants are for Black girls too?" The profound simplicity of that question struck deep "I thought that was very meaningful because up here in the south suburbs, pageantry isn't really recognized in our community from my understanding. Hearing that little girl say that to me was absolutely heartwarming" AttheheartofAmbria'splatformliestheLotusMovement abeautifullycraftedacronymthatstandsforLeadership, Opportunities,Transformation,Unity, andServicefor mankind ThesymbolismrunsdeepforthisHarvey,Illinois native, representingbothpersonalgrowthandcultural preservation."IchosethelotusflowerbecauseIlovewhatit represents,"sheexplainswithevidentpassion."I'venever seenoneinperson, butthelotusflowerisaboutgrowthand expansionindirtywaters justlikeourcommunitiescan flourishdespitechallenges"

Most concerning to her is the national landscape: "On a national level, we were told by our current presidential administration that the contributions our ancestors made with their blood, sweat, tears, and souls that we no longer exist and that our history that has shaped our culture and heritage never happened" Her voice carries both pain and determination as she continues, "This is why cultural preservation is so critical to my platform We cannot allow our stories, our heritage, and our contributions to be erased"
When asked about redefining Black cities, her vision becomes both protective and hopeful: "How can we reconstruct the dying aspects of our communities while preserving what makes us who we are? People are going to leave we cannot stop that But how can we make sure were honoring our history and culture while being positive instead of focusing on the negative aspects?"
Art as a Catalyst for Change
Art holds a special place in her heart, and she sees it as a powerful tool for community transformation "I do have a love for the arts painting, drawing, and even dancing to some degree, though I wouldn't consider myself a dancer," she shares with a laugh.
Her artistic vision extends beyond personal expression to community empowerment "Not everybody's career path involves going away to college, and trade school may not be an option for everyone either I know a lot of youth want to get into the arts singing, rapping My platform's goal is to ensure they're displaying good leadership skills in those different career fields."
She's particularly passionate about transforming narratives in music "I understand rap music and the negative connotations it can display with violence But I want young Black people to know they can still be rappers while pouring something positive into our communities instead of rapping about things that will destroy us as a people."
A Day in the Life of a Queen
Beyond the sash and crown, her daily life reflects her commitment to service. "On a weekly basis, I work as a youth instructor from 8 to 4, then after work, I go to the gym for strength training or walking Depending on the day, I might have community service, and other days I go straight home to relax with my family"
Her educational foundation a bachelor's degree in Human Development and Family Sciences from Northern Illinois University perfectly aligns with her mission "Go Huskies!" she adds with school pride "I really have a passion to work with all people, and I'm soon going to pursue my counseling degree, looking at Governor State University"
Her diverse work experience spans generations: "I've worked with older people as a healthcare worker and senior care homecare aide. I work with children in schools I want to be able to make sure I'm supportive to everybody and see what they need behind the scenes, beyond the crown and sash"
Building Bridges Across Communities
Her approach to fostering connections is refreshingly straightforward and hands-on "What I simply do is go to events I either show up to show my support, or I'm actually there helping for the most part, I'm serving Collaboration is very important to me"
As a member of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs Incorporated from the Delta NIU chapter, she understands the power of sisterhood and partnership "I collaborate with other Black organizations that want me, and I go support their events I haven t collaborated with Hispanic or other non-Black organizations yet but I'm open to building those bridges"
A Message of Resilience for Young Women
Her advice to young women is both honest and empowering: "I want young girls to know that everybody's not going to believe in you. Sometimes you'll have all these goals and dreams, and people will look at you like you're crazy When they start looking at you like that, some people will be very blunt about how they feel"
Her solution is practical wisdom: "You don't have to sit there and listen to it. Let it go in one ear and out the other, and try to keep yourself away from negative people who don't support and believe in your dreams even if its family Thats something I've faced, and how I've handled it has brought nothing but peace for me personally"
Looking Toward the Future
Her aspirations extend far beyond her reign "The legacy I want to leave as Miss Black Heartland USA is growth and expansion not only in our communities but on an individual level I want people to understand that no matter where they come from, who they are, or what challenges they've been through, they can still grow and be a positive influence in their communities."
She's ready to share an exciting secret: "I definitely want to turn the Lotus Movement into a nonprofit organization I want it to create programs for youth and mature leaders, bringing different resources into our communities so we always have something to fall back on, even if cities continue to fade for whatever reason."
Advice for Bridging Generational Gaps
Her insights on engaging Gen Z are particularly valuable for community leaders: "When working with youth, you have to find things that are interesting to them. What worked for us may not work for them. Technology is such a huge aspect nowadays, so we need social media to grab their interests"
She emphasizes collaboration among young leaders: "We need more young people my age and older to come together There are a lot of young people with organizations to empower Black youth. We all need to work together and find ways to get and keep their interest."
The challenge, she notes, is maintaining engagement: "The hardest part would be keeping their interest We have to find ways to keep them engaged through things they like, and that's a challenge because some things they like may not be positive We need new strategies to show them what's cool and whats not, without changing their overall persona as a generation."
Words of Encouragement for College-Bound Students
For students feeling discouraged about pursuing higher education amid financial uncertainties, she offers practical guidance: "Reach out to city officials, especially if you're already doing community service. Drawing from her own experience at Thornton Township High School, she recalls: "We had a Resource Center with scholarship opportunities and different ways to get help If your high school doesn't have those resources, then reach out to city officials If you live in a particular township area, try reaching out to other cities too Thats the best route to start"
Miss Black Heartland USA's message is clear: growth is possible for everyone, communities can transform through positive leadership, and young people have the power to create meaningful change Her Lotus Movement continues to bloom, proving that beauty and strength can indeed emerge from challenging waters

Why the Trades? Collin's Hands-On Approach
When asked what initially drew him to electrical linework, Collin's answer was immediate: "Hands-on! I love being hands-on I like learning new things, and once I heard it was academics and hands-on, I was like, 'This could be the program for me!'" He clearly thrives on practical learning and building tangible skills
Collin also has a keen eye for the everyday utility of his chosen field. He envisions his electrical skills being incredibly useful for personal projects and home repairs, and he emphasizes the enduring demand for electricians. "You're always going to need an electrician," he wisely noted. "That's one of those jobs that technology can never really take over, like a plumber. You always need those services."
A Resilient Future in the Trades
In a job market with growing uncertainties, Collin sees his specialized trade skills as a significant advantage. "Nobody – robots can't take over," he reiterated. "This is always something that's going to be needed in houses, establishments, facilities, etc." It's a powerful point, highlighting the job security and resilience that skilled trades offer.
Looking ahead, Collin's aspirations are a blend of professional growth and personal passion. Professionally, he sees his skills as opening countless doors, allowing him to be "always ready to work" and build a strong reputation But he also excitedly shared how this stable career will enable him to pursue his music career – his passion for creating positive, feel-good music "I can make it," he said with a smile, referring to his creative endeavors, confirming his plans for an upcoming EP on SoundCloud!
Beyond the Traditional Classroom: The Value of Hands-On Learning
Collin offers a refreshing perspective on the age-old college vs trades debate, especially with rising college costs "Not everybody's for college," he stated simply "Some people don't like it For me, college was just too much talk I wasn't satisfied with just sitting in a classroom, just hearing I preferred to do more hands-on work " His experience underscores that true learning can come in many forms, and for many, a practical, hands-on education is far more engaging and effective than solely theoretical study
When it comes to misconceptions about electrical careers, Collin acknowledged the common perception of it being dangerous. However, he quickly countered, "I feel like anything could be dangerous, but if you're professionally learning it, they'll teach you the nooks and crannies of how to be safe." He highlighted the importance of proper training and safety protocols, dispelling the myth that the inherent risks outweigh the rewards.
The Power of Mentorship and Apprenticeships
Collin strongly believes in the power of mentorship "It could work a lot," he shared "There are other people before me that have done this, and they can pave the way, open up new doors " While he hasn't actively sought a mentor yet, he's open to the opportunity, especially through an apprenticeship
He sees apprenticeships as absolutely crucial for mastering his craft and gaining real-world experience "It would just make me feel more complete," he explained, emphasizing how hands-on learning from experienced professionals would build his confidence and truly solidify his understanding.
Advice for the Next Generation & Impact in Glenwood
For young adults weighing their career paths, Collin's advice is clear and heartfelt: "Do what you enjoy Do what you really want to do " He urges them not to let others pressure them into choices they don't truly desire "You don't want to be doing a job you don't like and being miserable You don't want to live with regret Do what you like and stay focused " It’s powerful encouragement for self-discovery and pursuing genuine passion.
As he embarks on his electrical linework career, Collin is most excited about "getting back into school, creating discipline, and a routine." His ambition extends to making a lasting impact: "Build a name… be a go-to for anybody who needs electrical work. I want to be known. I could come back and hear people say, 'He came from Glenwood and he's a nice, successful electrical line worker'"
A Gen Z Perspective for Glenwood's Future
Finally, I asked Collin how his generation, Gen Z, can help move Glenwood forward by collaborating with older generations in leadership His answer was insightful: "We can bring a different point of view, different angles You know, things could be done for a long time in a certain way, but you could bring a whole new face, a clean slate " He stressed the importance of openmindedness from all sides "As long as everybody can be open-minded to each other and kind of grasp what people think, I think it could work."
Dawson Technical Institute - Electrical Line Worker Program
Collin Myers is a fantastic example of a young adult carving out a meaningful path with skill, passion, and a vision for community impact We wish him all the best as he electrifies his career and continues to bring his positive energy to Glenwood!

Meet Alana, a thoughtful young woman who has discovered the empowering feeling of financial responsibility "I love having my own money," she says with a bright smile, reflecting the confidence that comes with learning to manage personal finances Her approach to money management is both practical and disciplined she splits her earnings strategically, putting some in her checking account for immediate needs while placing the other half in her savings account for future goals When it comes to budgeting, Alana demonstrates wisdom beyond her years She acknowledges the importance of financial discipline, sharing that while she does budget her money, "I didn't spend a lot." This restraint shows her understanding that building a solid financial foundation requires making thoughtful choices about when and how to spend money, especially as she prepares for the significant investment that college represents.
The Foundation of Success: Grades, Money, and Education
Alana's perspective on academic success is refreshingly straightforward and honest. "First, in order to have good grades, you have to study. Her financial wisdom shines through in her advice to other young people: "See how much you want to spend and how much you want to save and that really helps " This simple yet effective strategy demonstrates her understanding that successful money management isn't about complex formulas or sophisticated investment strategies it's about making conscious decisions and sticking to a plan
When discussing the value of higher education, Alana's conviction is evident: "I feel that if you go to college, you will learn more than if you don't go to college and you will have a better education " Her belief in the transformative power of education drives her financial discipline, as she recognizes that the money she's saving today will open doors to learning opportunities tomorrow

Perhaps most intriguingly, Alana dreams of visiting Paris, drawn by the city's renowned fashion scene "I heard they have a lot of fashion I want to see if the fashions are like mine," she says with excitement This dream destination represents more than just a travel goal it reflects her interest in style, culture, and comparing her own aesthetic sensibilities with global fashion trends. The fact that she's already thinking about how her personal style might compare to Parisian fashion shows a confidence in her own identity and an curiosity about the wider world
Philosophy for Success
Throughout our conversation, Alana's approach to life can be summed up in her simple yet profound motto: "Just be your best " This philosophy underlies everything from her study habits to her financial decisions to her travel dreams It's a reminder that success doesn't always require complicated strategies or perfect execution sometimes it's about consistently showing up and doing your best with the resources and knowledge you have

Career Technical Educator | Metaverse & Web3 Advocate | EdTech & Esports Innovator | STEM Program Manager | STEM Advocate | Bridging Tech & Community
Educational administrators are increasingly reevaluating how they partner with melanated educational companies organizations led by and rooted in Black and Brown communities that live, work, and serve the neighborhoods they understand intimately Yet too often, districts award contracts to white-led STEM and education companies from outside states, firms that lack cultural fluency and meaningful connections to local schools.
These companies frequently offer cookie-cutter services that fail to meet the unique needs of Black and Brown students and families Meanwhile, innovative, community-centered companies—rich in cultural relevance and real-world impact struggle to compete in systems that undervalue the expertise they bring. The result? Visionary Black and Brown-owned STEM companies are pushed out, and when those distant contracts expire, schools are left with minimal or no results.
This cycle of neglect must end. School districts have a moral and strategic obligation to invest in educational enterprises that reflect and respect the communities they serve By championing inclusive, locally rooted partners, districts foster trust, empower students, and build sustainable pathways for learning and success. It's time to do better—with intention, equity, and urgency.

The OBBB ACT (H.R. 1) & The Impact on Public Health
Public health plays a vital role in ensuring the well-being of our communities by preventing disease, promoting healthy behaviors, and ensuring access to essential healthcare services. When public health is prioritized, communities thrive through reduced healthcare costs, increased productivity, and improved quality of life.
However, policy shifts under the Trump administration have raised concerns about the long-term health of vulnerable populations. Changes such as efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, rollbacks on environmental protections, and reduced funding for key public health agencies like the CDC can disproportionately affect low-income and marginalized communities. These decisions may limit access to preventive care, increase exposure to harmful environmental conditions, and weaken our collective ability to respond to public health crises. As a result, such policies not only endanger individual well-being but also threaten the resilience and equity of our communities as a whole.
Even though big changes at the national level can feel overwhelming, it’s important to remember that our voices still matter especially in our own communities. We have the power to speak up, look out for one another, and make a difference close to home. Whether it’s showing up to local meetings, supporting community health programs, voting, or just having real conversations with neighbors, all of it adds up. When we stick together, share resources, and stay involved, we build stronger, healthier communities from the ground up. Change doesn’t always have to start at the top it can start right here, with us showing up and taking care of each other.

By Tia Carol Jones
David N Jones founded Lumena Energy in 2020 to address sustainable energy needs The virtual power plant helps to address energy disparities and infrastructure needs. It manufactures products and those products are implemented within municipalities that work as miniature smart grids, with the goal of making municipalities energy sovereign Now, Jones wants to create a smart city and has chosen Ford Heights as the site for Project Kandor Project Kandor was designed as a pilot program to address disparities that exist in poor communities around the world, utilizing technology to fix them and create an ecological co-operative In that co-op, creatives would come together – artists, architects, engineers and more – to develop solutions to many of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals include no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, industry, innovation and infrastructure, peace justice and strong institutions
Jones said Ford Heights represented an area that was ripe for development – not a lot of crime, a lot of potential, a lot of underused land, and a lot of underutilized talent that can be trained through workforce means to be put to work He said Ford Heights is also very close to the Calumet River, close to highways and in a good strategic position to create a smart city
Project Kandor would have three phases The first phase is to address the food disparities that exist within the community Jones has proposed the creation of a vertical farming facility that would allow farm produce hydroponically and provide jobs, as well as cater to Ford Heights and the surrounding communities by having fresh food A data center is also being developed as part of the plan, because Jones believes that African Americans should own their own data The diode would be a modular shipping container that would be converted into a data center Another part of the plan is housing and there are plans to build 40 container homes, through Project Nehemiah, which is spearheaded by Lionel Pittman
There will also be opportunities for workforce development through Lumena Energy Academy, as well as opportunities for those interested in research and development Jones expects the project will take about 10 years and cost $100 million He said there are academic institutions, unions and nonprofit organizations that are partnering with Lumena on this project
Lumena Energy is working with the Village of Maywood for a pilot program for its micro smart grid and is currently operating a micro smart grid in Minneapolis-St Paul It is also working in South Africa and Colombia
“It’s my goal with Ford Heights to become a rose in the concrete I want it to stand as a testament that it is possible to build a technological marvel in a place that has seen less than stellar involvement from the state level and federal government To show that African Americans and people of color can stand together and create something impactful,” Jones said It is Jones’ hope that once the Ford Heights pilot program is completed, people will want to replicate, build out and implement the technology in other parts of the world
Building Futures:
A Conversation with David N. Jones on Project Nehemiah
As excitement filled the air, I had an opportunity to speak with David N Jones about the Project Nehemiah initiative, specifically asking how young people can get involved in the building trades and beyond David passionately explained that the core of their work revolves around "demystifying technology and providing workforce development opportunities for people who are usually in disenfranchised situations "
He emphasized their commitment to addressing various socioeconomic challenges, ensuring that individuals, regardless of their circumstances, are given the chance to participate Their vision is comprehensive, aiming to involve young people in both the hands-on work and the crucial planning aspects of projects Moreover, a key component is providing essential mentorship and guidance to foster sustainable pathways for growth David's ultimate goal is to empower the Black community to thrive together, building self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on external support His dedication to nurturing talent and creating inclusive opportunities is truly inspiring
Building Futures with Expertise:
A Conversation with Lt. Colonel Lionel Pittman
During the Project Nehemiah groundbreaking, I the spoke with Lt Colonel Lionel Pittman about an exciting topic: how our young people can step into the world of skilled trades through this project!
Lt Colonel Pittman shared invaluable advice on preparing for this kind of work, emphasizing the importance of obtaining foundational credentials He warmly pointed to a wealth of training programs right here in Ford Heights, as well as in Chicago “Imagine learning about solar panel installation with Lumena Energy or gaining essential certifications like Flagger and OSHA 30 through Cornerstone”!
He also celebrated the incredible resource we have in the Dawson Skills Center, which he noted offers a comprehensive range of vocational training – "from electrical classes, plumbing classes, masonry classes You name it, it's there" The true opportunity, as he beautifully put it, is "to introduce our young folks, [and] middle-age folks to what they can and cannot do"
Looking to the future, Lt Colonel Pittman envisions a mentorship model for upcoming projects Developers will encourage seasoned workers to take on a "protégé," fostering a supportive learning environment, whether through union or non-union affiliations This thoughtful approach highlights a commitment to developing local talent and ensuring a lasting legacy of skilled craftsmanship As he wisely stated, it's about "taking the short term loss for the long term gain "
He emphasized his personal commitment, declaring, "I’m going on my FAITH IN CHRIST on this Project Nehemiah " Project Nehemiah is the initial focal point that started the ball rolling, connecting the dots of many organizations and entities including BCU, AACA, AAPCA, Cornerstone Training Center, Dawson Technical Institute, and others
This incredible initiative relies on the support of individuals and organizations who share the vision for a brighter future in Ford Heights If you're inspired by the mission to empower our youth through skilled trades and wish to embrace "taking the short term loss for the long term gain, join us in funding these vital initiatives providing training programs, mentorship opportunities, and the overall development of a skilled local workforce

It was an honor to catch up with Lindblom alum Rohman Polk at the recent groundbreaking ceremony As a distinguished architect, Rohman's insights are invaluable, especially for young people considering their future paths I asked him about his journey and the significance of his latest project for the next generation
Rohman is a passionate advocate for introducing young minds to the diverse world of design "I used to volunteer with students from Chicago Public Schools, aiming to spark their interest in all design fields," he shared While architecture often takes center stage, he emphasized that it's just one facet "You could be an engineer or an interior designer All these professions demand imagination coupled with the ability to visualize and then transform that vision into reality" He explained that success in these fields requires a blend of skills, from strong communication to proficiency in math and science "Yes, it's a fulfilling career," Rohman affirmed, "but it's also a challenging journey that demands dedication "
When asked about those challenges, Rohman was candid "There will be many," he acknowledged He highlighted the ongoing need for diversity within the field, noting, "Don't quote me on a number, but less than 10% of registered architects are African American And while the number of women in the field has been rising, it's still much harder for Black individuals" However, he quickly added a powerful message of encouragement: "But don't let that discourage you Don't let anyone discourage you With enough determination, you can make it "
Rohman's dedication to inspiring young people and his impactful work truly embody the spirit of Lindblom I’m excited to see how his project will contribute to the community and motivate future architects and designers

When asked what guidance he'd offer to today's young people considering a career path like plumbing, Mr Pittman shared some timeless advice He emphasized the absolute necessity of gaining skills and proper training right from the start "You have to get a little training before you can get out there and try to do it," he wisely stated, underscoring the foundation needed for success
He also passionately spoke about the importance of practical experience and having a mentor, noting, "Somebody got to give you some experience" It's clear that his own company, Pittman Plumbing and Sewer, has truly lived this philosophy, opening doors for countless young individuals over the years His simple, heartfelt message reminds us that dedication, training, and a willingness to learn from those who've walked the path before you are key to building a fulfilling and prosperous career What an inspiring testament to hard work and community support!
Black Contractors United has been committed to supporting Black and minority contractors for over 60 years Black men have historically been the foundation of this country's construction This includes building infrastructure and communities Over the past few decades, a shift steered people away from these trades and toward corporate jobs This caused a disconnect from the history of skilled labor
The goal is to show young people their legacy in this field There is an opportunity to build a successful career, as well as support and enrich communities When this work is not done by the community, others from different backgrounds often step in, using resources without ensuring benefits circulate back It's time to reclaim the place in the construction world The hope is that young men can aspire to own excavation and contracting companies In turn, they can become pillars of strength and economic empowerment within neighborhoods This is why the project is happening – to build Black futures in construction
Trustee Stacey Perry shared enthusiasm for the project When asked about this new development and its potential impact, particularly on the young people who will see it, Trustee Perry responded
"I'm so excited about it!" she said "This project represents revenue for our community and also brings new housing opportunities It's a wonderful step forward!"
This development is about building a stronger, more vibrant community for everyone, including youth, who will witness this positive growth
Bernard Key on Project Kandor's Impact
The groundbreaking ceremony forProject Kandor and Smart City marks a pivotal moment for Ford Heights, one that Bernard Key enthusiastically describes as a"Marcus Garvey moment " For Key, this initiativeisn'tjustabout constructing new buildings; it's about rebuildinghistory and reclaiming a future forintelligent Black communities, much likethespirit of resilienceseen in Black Wall Street or Tulsa
"This is our chance tobuild," Key asserts, emphasizing a proactive approachto progress
The core of this vision lies in technology integration Key highlights how incorporating cutting-edge technology will significantly benefit young people in Ford Heights He passionately advocates for a sustainable model where educators and technologists collaborate to embed these advancements directly into school curricula
This partnership is critical for empowering educators who may lack prior experience in technology or entrepreneurship By fostering an environment where innovation is embraced and new job opportunities are created within schools, Ford Heights can cultivate a skilled workforce ready for the future The urgency is clear: by working together, schools and the community can ensure Ford Heights becomes a beacon of technological empowerment and economic opportunity

An Unforgettable Night on Broadway: "PURPOSE" Delivers!
What an absolutely thrilling experience we had on Broadway recently, all thanks to our incredible Glenwood connection! We are so deeply grateful to Glenn Davis's stepmom, Rosalind Davis, and his aunt and uncle, Fanchion and Ronald Blumenberg, for their wonderful generosity in arranging those coveted backstage passes. It was an unforgettable moment for my young family members to meet the dynamic cast - Harry Lennix, Jon Michael Hill, Kara Young, and especially the Tony Award-winning actor himself, Glenn Davis!
My family and I were fortunate to attend the 2025 Tony Award-winning production of "Purpose," and the excitement was palpable from start to finish! My young adult family members described the play as both profoundly serious and wonderfully comical, as it masterfully navigates the complexities of family drama. It's truly deserving of every honor it has received.
Why You Should See "Purpose"
Brilliantly penned by Tony Award-winning playwright and producer Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, "Purpose" is a compelling family drama that delves into powerful themes of faith, politics, and the enduring legacy of Black radicalism. It centers on a highly visible and influential Black family – leaders in politics, civil rights, and religion –whose carefully constructed facade begins to crack. When the youngest son brings home a guest, this visitor acts as a catalyst, forcing a deep and often uncomfortable introspection into the family's dynamics of power, religion, spirituality, belief structures, and legacy.
Under the superb direction of Phylicia Rashad, the ensemble cast delivered truly extraordinary performances, which is evident in the deluge of awards and nominations they've garnered this season. We were particularly thrilled to see Kara Young win a Tony Award for "Best Featured Actress in a Play," alongside well-deserved Tony nominations for LaTanya Richardson Jackson ("Best Actress in a Play"), Harry Lennix and Jon Michael Hill ("Best Actor in a Play"), and, of course, our very own Glenn Davis ("Best Featured Actor in a Play").
"Purpose" has also been lauded with a Pulitzer Prize, named "Best Play" by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle, and "Outstanding Play" by the Drama Desk Awards – and it's easy to see why! This production is an absolute mustsee. We wholeheartedly encourage you to make it a family affair and get tickets for its NYC Broadway run. And, like us, you'll surely be hoping it makes a triumphant return to the Chicago Steppenwolf Theater in the near future!

It is with support that we have been able to accomplish initiatives and ensure our collective voices are heard.
Glenwood has a rich history built on community investment and community involvement. We are at a point in time where it is imperative that we remain involved. Political and cultural changes dictate that if ever there was a time to get involved, that time is now. Legacy is important, and if we are going to continue Glenwood's rich history, we cannot allow complacency to continue to take a front seat. I solicit your continued involvement and challenge you to invite a friend and a neighbor to get actively involved.
Homeowner association meeting is a good place to initiate involvement Each association meets monthly and it's a forum where we can share ideas to improve our community and collectively address any concerns we may have. If you have ideas that you think will make the Homeowners meeting more productive, please let us know.
Collectively our voices can make a difference, but apathy and complacency will be a silent killer to our community.
Respectfully,
Edwin King
