Page 1

On behalf of Math with EEEs, Inc., thank you for attending the 2023 STEM Scholarship Dinner. Our lives were forever changed by COVID-19. African American scientist Kizzmekia Corbett led the National Institute Of Health and designed the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, marking a turning point in the global pandemic. As we return from the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s more important than ever to inspire students and celebrate their academic excellence and community service.

This year we’re pleased to be on the right track for accomplishing our goal of exposing students to a new level of motivation and pride as a result of increasing their exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math opportunities:

Partner with five organizations that provide additional STEM opportunities

Provide educational materials to students at home and abroad

Build STEM Success Partnerships with Chicagoland and Ghana schools

Math with EEEs, Inc., donating computers to the Headmaster of The Cape Coast School for the Deaf and Blind

Education is vital in order to compete in the 21st century global economy. The need for African-American students entering STEM fields is greater than ever! Not only do more African-American students need to be inspired to aspire, they need the opportunity to showcase their STEM brilliance. I believe this year’s scholarship recipients have the tenacity and leadership skills to be leaders in medical research, environmental sciences, artificial intelligence, and other areas of STEM.

Congratulations to our 2023 scholarship recipients and families!

‘THE NEGRO NATIONAL ANTHEM’ “Lift

Every Voice and Sing”

(June 17, 1871 - June 26, 1938)

Originally written by Johnson for a presentation in celebration of the birthday of Abraham Lincoln. This was originally performed in Jacksonville, Florida, by children. The popular title for this work is:

Lift every voice and sing

Till earth and heaven ring,

Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise

High as the listening skies,

Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,

Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun

Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet

Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?

We have come over a way that with tears have been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last

Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might

Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, Our God, where we met Thee; Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand.

True to our GOD, True to our native land

Dr. Nicole Bing

Governors State University

Associate Professor STEM/Public Health Brigade

Governors State University (GSU) began working with Global Brigades in 2016. Since that time we have taken seven groups of students to Central America and Africa for a service-learning experience abroad. Primarily students have participated in Global Brigades, Public Health Brigade program in which they construct hygiene stations, interact with and educate families on public health, sanitation, and disease transmission, and dug trenches for water to improve the long-term sanitation infrastructure. Our group has also participated in one Human Rights Brigade in which volunteers assisted Panamanian lawyers in conducting legal clinics on child custody, domestic violence, and marriage dissolution in small, under-resourced, rural communities with limited or no access to legal resources otherwise. The students also provided informational workshops on Panamanian and indigenous laws related to empowering families, women and children and improving outcomes related to discord within the family structure. Each service-learning experience is linked to a GSU academic course.

In the summer of 2019, GSU was able to refocus on the public health aspect of the service-learning experience and brought students to Ghana for the first time on a Public Health Brigade. The brigade incorporated experiential learning course content, and examined the relationship between the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Mass Incarceration in America.

In May 2023 GSU Public Health Brigade Team asked Math with EEEs Inc., to partner with us to supply school supplies, teaching materials, and hygiene products to the school children in Ekumpoano, Ekumfi District, Ghana. It came through in such a significant way. We arrived in Ghana with 20 suitcases full of materials.

The Global Brigades team was overwhelmed with Math with EEEs Inc., generosity. They asked us to inventory everything and helped to make contact with the Ekumfi District Education Directorate. On Thursday, May 25, 2023, our GSU team was received by Mr. Isaac Oscar Odoom, Ekumfi Director of Education, Mr. Shafiu Shaibu, Executive Director-Global Brigades, Mr. John Aryee, Program Coordinator-Global Brigades, Mr. David Donku, headmaster of St. Anthony Catholic Basic School, and, of course, the children of Ekumpoano.

The children were indeed overjoyed. They gave us rousing cheers and hundreds of hugs and high fives. Mr. Odoom gave a speech of gratitude on behalf of Ekumfi District officials. We were, too, grateful to have been instrumental in bringing much needed resources to the school.

We could not have done this without you. We also must thank Glenwood Academy and Dean Dermer of GSU’s College of Education who helped us cover the shipping expenses to get the donations to Ghana.

Unconventional Twist: Grandmother Seizes Student’s Spot in Coding Course, Becomes a Champion and Crafts a Stunning Website with Codewithsharens

[Chicago, May 31, 2023] Written by: Sharen Eddings, a leading provider of coding education, has announced a heartwarming twist in their STEM coding course. As enrolled high school students faced graduation obligations, Lawanna Hawthorne, a determined grandmother, stepped up to take the place of one student, embracing the chance to learn coding and make her mark in the digital realm.

In a remarkable turn of events, Codewithsharen, known for its commitment to empowering students of all ages, made an exception in their enrollment process. Sharen Eddings, the visionary behind Codewithsharen, expressed their curiosity about Lawanna’s decision to join the course. We don’t normally accommodate such requests, but Lawanna’s situation struck a chord with us. She was in need of a website for her business, and we saw an incredible opportunity for her to dive into the world of coding and unleash her potential, shared Sharen Eddings. Lawna Hawthorne, the proud owner of Girtha Lee Cleaning Service, recognized this opening as a chance to immerse herself in the world of coding and expand her horizons. With enthusiasm and determination, she eagerly embraced the STEM coding course, ready to conquer the challenges that lay ahead.

When I first learned that a website consisted of coding, I was simply blown away. The idea that someone would even think of doing such a thing, amazed me. Lawanna exclaimed. I had retired and was sitting around the house when my sister-in-law, Deborah Birmingham, CEO of Math with EEES, recommended that I take the course Codewithsharen. I had no idea what she was talking about—’coding?

Lawanna admitted that on the first day of the course, she felt the urge to run. However, she mustered the courage to give it a try, reminding herself that there’s no failure in trying, only a failure to try. The challenges presented in the course pushed her to put on her thinking cap and sent her mind twirling. She discovered her love for problem-solving and enjoyed the process of figuring things out.

If I make a mistake, I simply go back to my course lessons and other resources that Sharen taught us about. I learned how to research HTML and CSS topics to correct my source code, Lawanna explained. I find myself studying more and more about it, eager to enhance my skills.Through Codewithsharen’s comprehensive curriculum, Lawanna embarked on an educational journey that led her to develop a remarkable skill set in coding. Mastering the intricacies of HTML and CSS, Lawanna rose to the occasion and crafted a stunning, fully functional website that not only represents her business but also showcases her newfound coding expertise.

We couldn’t be prouder of Lawanna’s incredible accomplishments and the unwavering dedication she has shown throughout this journey, expressed Sharen Eddings, Founder of Codewithsharen. Her story is a shining example of the transformative power of education and the limitless possibilities of coding.

As Codewithsharen continues to empower students and wishes she had more funding to support the effort to teach more older adults. Lawanna’s journey stands as a testament to the transformative impact of coding education. Codewithsharen and Math with EEEs strive to create a future where individuals of all backgrounds can seize opportunities, break stereotypes, and unleash their full potential in the digital age.

CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2023

I’ve thought long and hard about telling my story. My experience in graduate school was a time of grief and growth for me. Between grieving the loss of my dad and grandma, enduring a pandemic, missing friends who moved away, and navigating my self love journey, it’s safe to say I’ve been through a lot. Although my story didn’t stop there. I made new friends, networked with peers in my field, secured a new job and internship, served as a mentor and advocate for my students, and overall learned more about myself and the strength I possess.

There were so many times when I wanted to quit. So many times when I just wanted room to breathe between all of my responsibilities. So many times I felt lost and overwhelmed. So many times I thought I couldn’t do it. But guess what? I did! I worked so hard for this Masters Degree and the journey pushed me into becoming an even better version of myself. Joshua 1:9 states “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Even when I couldn’t see my purpose, God never let go of me, instead he held me closer. So this degree is more than paper to me. It’s a hard earned achievement and I couldn’t be more proud of myself. This one is for Diamond.

I would use this scholarship to help myself inspire others to pursue their dreams, especially in STEM areas. I am where I am because of the great people and resources and I believe that everyone deserves that. It is very unfortunate that people with such potential will never get to seek what they are truly passionate about simply because of where they come from, and others were born into a world of endless possibilities. The possibilities should be endless for all, no matter their background. This scholarship and resources will open up even more opportunities that I wouldn’t have access to on my own. These opportunities are going to put me one step closer to reaching my goals.

I am writing this letter to Ms. Birmingham to express my sincere gratitude for all the guidance and support she has provided me throughout our relationship. Her mentorship has not only helped me grow professionally, but also personally. Her positive attitude, kindness, and empathy have been a source of inspiration for me. I aspire to be as effective a mentor as she is,, and I hope to pay forward the valuable lessons I have learned from her.
