When the light fades, friends will turn foes as their goals oppose.
Fading Light is a dark fantasy open worl souls like game, based around anthropomorphoc bugs in an apocalyptic world. This pitch is for a cutscene within this theoretical game, where the player character meets with Adrian, a character who has appeared and hekped the player several times at this point, and whose questline would have to be followed to get to this cutscene. The cutscene begins with the player entering the battlefield on a precipace that overlooks it, before cutting to show a clawed hand being dragged across the stones of the archway on the other end, revealed to belong to Adrian. Adrian will walk forward and meet the player in the middle of the field, where he will thank the player for their help, before explaining that his new goal is to achieve the same thing the player has been working towards across the game, to become the new sun god and stop the sun in the sky from dying. Since only one can truly achieve this goal, Adrian will offer the player a choice. To work with him and help him achieve his goal, which will still restore the sun, or to continue on your own path to apotheosis, and fight Adrian here and now. Depending on the player's choice, this will then lead into a dialogue with Adrian, or a boss fight against him.
In this world, the sun goddess has been slain and now the sun itself is dying as a result. The world has been brought into disarray as over the years the sun has grown darker and colder with a reflection of the goddess' injury creeping across it's face. It has now reached a point where the lands in the north have become inhospitable, plant life is struggling to grow and the daytime grows ever darker and redder.
This of course has thrown the world into disarray, as various kingdoms and factions are struck with famine from their crops dying and the lands growing colder as the world is seemingly coming to its end. The Order of the Sun, once the greatest faction of the age, is now a shadow of its former self built on a new doctrine of opression and supremacy in its desperation. Many groups have also taken advantage of the chaos to fight their own wars, while others hunkered down to do their best to survive as they can.
However, this is not the first age of this world and as the ancient legends may tell you, each age is defined by a new sun. And as the seventh age draws to its close, and no replacement for the sun goddess in sight, the only way to bring forth a new sun is for one with divine power to immolate themselves in the Great Pyre at the Altar of the Sun, just as the sun of the fifth age once did millenia ago. And so the world waits for one with divine power of their own to come to the altar and bring about the eighth age, fixing this broken world
The Soulless is the protagonist anf playanle character of Fading Light. A prisoner who was punished for unknown reasons by having their soul removed so that they could not die as they wasted away in the dungeons of the Order of the Sun. This protagonist is entirely customisable, with you choosing one of a variety of species and background options at the beginning that dictate some of your stats, abilities, and how other characters see and react to you. You can also wield a large variety of weapons from heavy crushing weapons that break through any target with flat damage numbers, to lighter piercing weapons that do massive damage to weak points but have trouble piercing chitin and armour, to others inbetween and some that are entirely unique. There is also a variety of armour and clothing options to pick from with various effects, damage reduction and fashion.
Some examples of combinations of species, weapons and armours the Protagonist can use:
Adrian is prince of the warrior kingdom of Klandestine. Klandestine's society is one based around battle and power, and one's might determines their strength. As the child of their God King, Adrian was expected to inherit his father's divine power. However this was not the case, and Adrian was the disappointment of his family, an outcast who was far weaker then his siblings. And try as he might to keep up on his own merits, Adrian was simply too weak. Eventully Adrian would be banished, and he would wander the lands in search of divine power to claim as his own, willing to do near anything to achieve this goal. The player meets him on your own journey and he helps you out in several fights if you follow his questline. Eventually his questline leads the player to Klandestine where you will help him kill his father and usurp the throne, now powerful enough to take his place. However this is not enough for him and next you meet him, he is in armour you haven't seen before, and seeking to ascend to a god in his own right. And that goal leads him to the Great Pyre, where he intends to become the new sun god, just as you do.
The site of an ancient battle between the Solaris Knights and the kingdom of Klandestine. The battle has long concluded, and all thats left are abandoned weapons, failed defenses, ruined structures and a few scattered bodies across the dust strewn field. Klandestine was the victor of this battle, and its flag can still be seen propped up on the dust and dirt
There are two key locations on the battlefield for this cutscene.
First there is the archway that Adrian arrives through, as that arch is the location of Adrian's introduction in the cutscene.
Second is the rocky precipice that the protagonist arrives on, granting a view of the battlefield and the area in which the boss fight will take place
The protagonist steps forward over a precipice to unveil the battlefield before them, as dust blows through the desolated field
Claws drag aross the stone of the archway, a strange red energy surrounding them, before the camera pulls out to reveal the claws belonging to Adrian, in armor the player hasnt seen before
Adrian extends a corrupted hand as he offers the player an ultimatum. They can either join him and help him ascend to godhood, or they will become enemies and fight, here in this ancient battlefield
My name is Mathias Harley, I'm 17 and the game of Fading Light has been a Pipe Dream of mine since early high school. It takes a lot of inspiration from the Soulsborne series, Hollow Knight as well as some inspiration from the manga Beserk, ehich was also an inspiration for the Souls games. I hope one day that I might be able to make Fading Light into a fully fledged game, but that seems highly unlikely at best.
My hobbies include art, video games and music, and I'm an avid fan of Pokemon. My favourite game is Hollow Knight, and my favourite song is Octavarium by Dream Theatre.
I am currently studying at the Southern Institute of Technology for a Bachelor's degree in screen arts, with an animation major
