PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE ENTER TO LEARN.
GO FORTH TO SERVE.
Winter and a new year can be a time that encourages us to slow down and consider where we are headed At Mater Dei, this time of year offers a chance to reflect on how we are forming our students not just academically, but also in their understanding of who God created them to be and how they are being called to live
Vocation can be thought of as an abstract concept, but for our students, it is becoming increasingly real We see it in the questions they ask, the effort they put into exploring their future, and the way they show up for one another. Whether they are discerning college plans, careers paths, service to the Church, or future family life, they are learning that their choices matter and that their lives have purpose.
One of the most encouraging signs of this growth is the way our students are engaging across campus. On Monday nights, many students choose to attend Mass at Sacred Heart, not out of obligation but because they want to be there In classrooms, teachers and staff report deeper conversations, stronger engagement, and a growing willingness among students to think critically about their gifts and how to use them well
This attentiveness to the use of their gifts does not happen by accident. It is the result of faculty and staff who intentionally walk alongside students, challenging them while also encouraging reflection. It is reinforced through retreats, service opportunities, athletics, the arts, and everyday moments that invite students to slow down and consider the bigger picture of who God is calling them to be.
I can relate personally to this process of listening and discernment After spending over 30 years at Mead Johnson, stepping away from a long-established routine and pace gave me the space I needed to recognize a new direction my path to the diaconate and to Mater Dei It wasn’t immediate or dramatic, but over time, clarity came That experience continues to shape how I view Vocation not as a single decision, but as a lifelong practice of listening to God and responding prayerfully
As you turn the pages of this edition of the Red & Gold, you will see these same themes reflected in the stories of our students, faculty, and families. You will also see how our Mater Dei community continues to invest in opportunities that support this kind of formation.
Thank you for your continued support of Mater Dei and, most importantly, for your belief in the young people we are called to serve May this season offer each of us the space to listen to God, reflect, and take the next step forward with purpose
In Christ, Through Our Blessed Mother,

Deacon Dan Niemeier President, Mater Dei High School

Faith, Family, and the Call to Love
HOW MATER DEI FACULTY MEMBERS WITNESS GOD’S LOVE THROUGH ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE
by Peyton Ritter ‘13, Director of Marketing & Communications
At Mater Dei, the word family has always meant more than shared bloodlines or last names It is something lived: a daily practice of generosity, courage, community, and faith For members of our faculty, that commitment has taken on a profound form through adoption and fostering, three journeys rooted in the same core truth: when God calls, love responds.
Hearing the Call
For Spanish teacher Cami Vieke, adoption was not a sudden idea but a whisper from God repeated over time
On the morning of Sept 12, 2001, she said, “I was walking my dog and thinking, How do I bring a child into such a fallen and terrifying world? And that still, small voice that is only God said to me: ‘Just adopt.’”
Years later, after heartbreak, waiting, and fervent prayer, that whisper became a calling she could no longer ignore A chance conversation with a coworker and other small signs in daily life confirmed what she already knew in her heart “When God speaks, I listen,” she said “It’s not easy to give up the dream of carrying your own child, but I knew God had planted this desire for a reason.”
For Choir Director Colton Potter, who is currently fostering young children, the call unfolded differently. Fostering had long been part of the conversation.
Colton’s wife was adopted, and fostering was woven into her family’s story more than forty children had passed through her parents’ home “It was always something we talked about,” Colton explained “Even before we were married, we talked about kids when, how many, and how.”
“I think the Lord works logically a lot of the time,” Colton said. “Once we started the process and talking to people, everything just meshed. Fostering felt like the right thing to do ”
For Science teacher Travis Van Bussum and his wife Amanda (Cox) ‘06, the call to adoption and foster care emerged from an unexpected place. Just one month before their wedding, they learned they would not be able to conceive children naturally.
“Obviously, we were devastated,” Amanda shared. “All of the plans we’d made seemed to dissolve right in front of us ”
Yet even in that heartbreak, she felt clarity Motherhood was still part of God’s plan just not the way she had imagined Adoption felt like a natural next step. Foster care did not.
“It was the one path I told Travis and God that I was unwilling to consider,” Amanda admits.
The emotional risk felt overwhelming. And yet, the idea would not leave her. “There were signs everywhere Stories I couldn’t ignore Dreams I couldn’t shake ”
She shared what she was experiencing with Travis, and he agreed without a second thought. “We both felt a peace we couldn’t explain,” she said. “We decided to trust.”
Walking the Journey With Faith
Each path comes with uncertainty, requirements, and emotional valleys Yet all three journeys reveal the same truth: faith is not passive It is lived daily through trust
Cami describes her years-long adoption process marked by heartbreak, reversals, and unexpected miracles as “an emotional roller coaster God used to reshape [her] understanding of trust.”
“After losing two adoption matches, I told God, You promised me And one week later, out of the blue, we were called to come get our baby girl,” Cami said
For Colton, fostering has required learning to love without guarantees “Fostering teaches you to love fully while releasing control,” he explained. “That kind of love only makes sense through faith.”
The Van Bussums know this reality intimately. Over the course of eleven years, Travis and Amanda have fostered and adopted eight children five adopted and three currently in the process of adoption
“There is no way to do this without surrender,” Travis says “You love completely, even when the outcome isn’t certain.”
Amanda remembers carrying one of their first placements into the house just days after he arrived. “I remember looking up at the stars and wondering how I could ever let him go,” she said “But we loved him completely anyway Because that’s what he deserved ”
Nearly three years later, that child and his siblings became their adopted children “We didn’t know how the story would end,” Amanda said. “We just knew we were called to love in the middle of it.”
Held by Family and Community Cami credits her husband Joe, her mother, and a network of praying women who sustained her during years of waiting “Joe always made sure I knew I was enough,” she said “That our family would be built exactly the way God intended

”
Colton echoes the importance of community. “It truly takes a village. Our families, friends, coworkers and Mater Dei have all been part of that support.”
For the Van Bussums, that support has extended beyond their home In 2019, Amanda helped launch a branch of Borrowed Hearts, a ministry that provides clothing and essentials to foster families free of charge
“I wanted to keep serving, even when our home was full,” she explained. “I took a passion and desire to help, and the Lord multiplied it.”
A Witness to Hope
Adoption and foster care do not follow straight lines They require patience, vulnerability, courage, and a willingness to let God lead
But as these faculty members attest, God’s plan often unexpected is always abundant.
“Looking at our children,” Cami said, “it’s amazing to know it’s all God. Nature and nurture coming together to form these incredible individuals I get to love beyond measure ”
Colton agrees “You never know whose life you’ll change or how your own will be transformed Love isn’t always neat or predictable, but it is always worth it.”
And for Travis and Amanda, the call continues to unfold. “I never imagined parenting eight children,” Travis said. “But I love the life we have built.”
Together, their witness reminds us that family is not defined solely by biology, but by the courage to say yes to love, to sacrifice, and to trust God’s greater plan In that sense, adoption and foster care are not simply ministries. They are living reflections of the Gospel.

This fall, Mater Dei welcomed back a cherished exchange tradition, hosting students from Osnabrück, Germany, for nearly a month. Through shared classrooms, Friday night lights, and family dinners, our visiting students experienced life as Wildcats!
Special thanks to the Bonham and Decamps families for opening their homes to our exchange students.
FUN FACT: This exchange story spans generations. In 1993, Mark Decamps and Sebastian Roling swapped schools through the same program Now, 32 years later, the Decamps welcomed Sebastian’s daughter, Freya, to Mater Dei as a second-generation exchange student.
“I really enjoyed my visit to the U.S. and Mater Dei. It was truly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had The school system in Indiana is very different from Germany, and it was very interesting to see how classes and daily life at Mater Dei work. I think it’s great that students get to choose their classes. One of my favorite things about the people I
From Osnabrück to Evansville

met is how welcome they made me feel! In my opinion, students in Evansville are more outgoing than the German ones I meet every day, which made me feel very included. Also, I loved watching Mater Dei football games and cheerleading both sports are not popular in Germany Lastly, it was so fun trying out all the American food spots I’ve seen on social media (Crumbl, ChickFilA )!”

INAUGURATION
Step into Mater Dei-ville a city unlike any other! Launched in 1952 by Monsignor William Lautner, the one-ofa-kind student government was boldly modeled after a real U S city
So unique, in fact, that in 1956, the Mayor of Evansville officially declared Mater Dei-ville an honorary suburb of the city. Every student who enrolls at the school automatically becomes a citizen, complete with the right to vote and shape their community
With executive, legislative, and judicial branches, Mater Dei-ville gives students a front-row seat to leadership, responsibility, and civic pride.
At the start of the 2025-2026 school year, we celebrated the inauguration of our Mater Dei-ville Student Council.
After swearing in Clerk Piper Fehrenbacher at a prayer service before school, students gathered to welcome all incoming members, including Judge Matthew Schroeder and Mayor Eli Kane.
We were honored to welcome former teacher and coach, Mike Goebel ‘70, as our guest speaker. Goebel shared on the importance of public service and investing your time and talents into the community around you, a message he lives by currently serving as a Vanderburgh County Commissioner

A Celebration of Faith, Family & Tradition
Our annual Grandparents Day was one for the books leaving us with full hearts and, yes, full parking lots! It was a joy to watch generations come together in faith, love, and tradition as grandparents filled our campus
This year’s celebration looked a little different, with our cheerleaders leading the school song, recognition of our in-season teams, and plenty of spirited crowd participation before guests enjoyed the cookie reception
Following the festivities, guests were invited to tour the school, giving many a firsthand look at where their grandchildren learn, grow, and thrive each day. To put the icing on the cake, students were dismissed early, and many families took advantage of the special day by heading out to lunch together.
We are endlessly grateful for all grandparents. They are such an important part of our Mater Dei family and a shining example of faith, love, and legacy for our students

MORE THAN A WEEKDAY
Seven years ago, in August of 2018, the Fr Deydier House of Discernment opened next door to Sacred Heart Church, providing young men a place where they could take a year to intentionally spend time in prayer and community to discern where God may be calling them in their vocations. Shortly after, Fr. Tyler Tenbarge, Vocations Director for the diocese, began opening the church on Monday nights and offering adoration, confessions, and Mass to the community. From this came two opportunities:
1 Young men living in the House of Discernment had the opportunity to partake in the Eucharist and participate in a liturgical setting on a weekly basis to help them in their discernment 2.Members of the community were provided with an opportunity to come together to pray about their individual vocations and for vocations to be faithfully lived out in our community.
What began as a couple dozen people gathering for adoration, confession, and Mass on a Monday night has now grown into over 200 people attending this weekly opportunity for prayer, discernment, and community “People are excited to be a part of something and to give a concrete way to pray about and for vocations,” stated Fr. Tyler.
Since its start in 2018, “Monday Nights” have become more than just another weeknight, it’s become a part of the vocabulary for several individuals in our community Now, Fr Tyler is joined regularly by Fr Lowell Will and Fr Jim Koressel in hearing confessions, allowing for more individuals to take advantage of the sacrament, even after Mass begins. Several deacons, including Deacon Dan Niemeier, assist at Mass and rotate through presiding at Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction beforehand. Mater Dei alumni and current students also frequently attend this opportunity each week.
by Michaela Kunkler ‘17 Campus Minister

“What began as a quiet offering for a few has become a weekly gathering that now unites generations, parishes, students, families, and friends in faith. Each Monday, the doors of Sacred Heart open again, inviting all who enter to pause, pray, and listen for where God may be calling next.”
Senior Max Collins is one such student After diving deeper into his faith during his freshman year at Mater Dei, he attended his first Monday Night Mass. As a member of Savio, a faith formation group for young men in high school, Max was familiar with Fr. Tyler and the Sacred Heart campus. He was also deeply drawn to the opportunity to go to confession before Mass
“It’s just a good reset and gets me zeroed back in on what really matters to me,” Max said “Especially that confession part - it gets me right with God and back on my path to holiness.”
Another major draw for attendance at Monday Nights is the community aspect. Sacred Heart has become the “faith hangout spot amongst parishes” according to Fr Tyler Individuals of all ages from around the diocese come together for this weekly opportunity, and a new form of community has arisen because of it College students stick around once a month for a meal and social time hosted by USI, families come together after busy days at work and school, and high school athletic teams attend together as a group before a big game or post-season playoffs. For the past two years, the football teams from Mater Dei and Memorial have joined together with the community to attend Mass before the Knights of Columbus Hunger Bowl in September Crowds dressed in red and blue spirit wear pack the pews to support their team, help their community, and grow in their faith
Groups of students from Mater Dei and Memorial will regularly attend Mass together and then go somewhere to eat and hangout afterward. “[There are] people from all different kinds of backgrounds and we all do different things, but the one thing we have in common is that we love Jesus and we want to be with Him as much as we can,” Max said
As “Monday Nights” continue to grow, what remains constant is the heart behind them a simple desire to create space for prayer, discernment, and community. What began as a quiet offering for a few has become a weekly gathering that now unites generations, parishes, students, families, and friends in faith. Each Monday, the doors of Sacred Heart open again, inviting all who enter to pause, pray, and listen for where God may be calling next

“We actually did come together very quickly,” Hertel said
She reflected on cherished memories from Thursday nights at Buffalo Wild Wings with the team and the bonding road trips to games.
Whether it’s soccer, baseball or tennis, Mater Dei has a reputation for filling the stands at home or away Flag football’s rookie year was no exception The Wildcat community showed out for the players, supplying food, drinks, and support the whole season. Just like any veteran sport, the display of community makes a difference for the players on and off the field.
“We had a tailgate before our game, and seeing all these people come that would go to the normal boys football games, the support was crazy,” senior Izzy Like said “We had people emailing our coaches, and just throughout the year, we had so many positive messages We'd walk in the hallways, and everyone would be like, ‘You guys had a great game…’ We had a very huge support system during our away games. We traveled all the way to Terre Haute, and we had more fans than the other teams in the fan section.”
As an emerging sport, flag football has a lot of room to grow and open new opportunities for girls and women in sports Players are a mix of athletes from other sports and also girls who have never participated in athletics. Additionally, flag football is already having an impact on the younger generations.

“ ... It definitely will have an impact, because we had a camp, and there's so many little girls. I've had parents tell me that little kids have been saying how excited they are to play it [flag football],” Like said “So it's definitely going to grow, and it's really exciting ”
With such a thrilling and successful first season, the players, coaches and Colts have high hopes for girls flag football and the program at Mater Dei.

GIVING THAT LASTS

by Mallory Hertel, Director of Advancement
For Rita (Patry) Eykamp ‘55, Mater Dei High School was never just a place to earn a diploma It was also where values were formed and responsibilities were reinforced Those early experiences, and the adults who took a personal interest in her success, left a permanent mark.
“Mater Dei helped reinforce my sense of moral conduct and responsibility,” Rita says. “Father Lautner knew the students by name and cared about our success in life ”
That sense of being known and guided, she reflects, is something that stays with you long after graduation. It is also what eventually calls you back.
WHY GIVE BACK AND WHY PLAN AHEAD
As Rita and her husband Richard reflected on the path their lives had taken, she recognized how much of it traced back to the guidance she received as a student
“There is an incentive to give back when you realize the advice you received helped shape your life,” Rita said.
That reflection has led them not only to make gifts in support of Mater Dei today and to the Growing in Grace Campaign, but to take the additional step of establishing an endowment through a planned gift, ensuring their support will continue well into the future For the Eykamps, legacy giving isn’t about size; it’s about sustainability

“A legacy gift allows you to continue your giving in perpetuity,” Rita says “Even a small legacy gift can grow into something more substantial over time ”
That long-term thinking is essential, they note, as Mater Dei’s role in the Evansville community continues to grow. Planned gifts and endowments provide stability, supporting students year after year, regardless of changing circumstances.
ENDOWMENTS THAT SUPPORT STUDENTS
The endowment Rita and Richard established reflects a clear understanding of how Catholic education works today Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of a Mater Dei education. Endowments help fill that gap, quietly, consistently, and powerfully.
Their hope reaches beyond the classroom. The Eykamps believe that support today helps provide a strong Catholic education while also teaching students that they are part of a larger, caring community By recognizing the generosity behind their opportunities, students are encouraged to
carrythatspiritforwardandgivebackinmeaningful waysinthefuture.
“Wehopestudentsareappreciativeofthehelpthey receiveandthatitinspiresthemtogiveback someday.Thegenerosityofothersisnecessarytohelp fillthegaps”
