The MBI Cares Mission highlights our staff’s dedication to supporting communities and fostering a culture of giving within the construction industry. Our mission is to show how our industry builds not just structures, but stronger, more vibrant communities.
2025 has become our best year of service yet! We set out a goal of positively impacting a non-profit group either financially or with service each month of the year. We’re proud to have met that goal in the following ways and look forward to continuing this service in 2026.

SEPTEMBER: We contributed and raised $10,000 for Construction Angels - an organization that provides immediate financial assistance and grief counseling to the children (19 years & younger) and spouse left behind when a construction worker is involved in an accidental work-related fatality.

OCTOBER: We contributed an in-office donation of $1,200 for Can Do Cancer - a non-profit organization that works to improve the lives of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

NOVEMBER: We provided a Veteran's Day Breakfast.

DECEMBER: Partners with Toys for Tots as a toy drop location to collect toys for children in need.

Last fall, Graham Construction – a 3G Company was honored with the Department of Defense (DoD) Freedom Award, the highest recognition for employers supporting National Guard and Reserve employees. This prestigious award highlights Graham Construction’s exceptional commitment to staff who balance civilian careers with military service.
Presented by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), the Freedom Award is given to organizations that go beyond legal requirements to support military employees. Recipients are nominated by Guard and Reserve members who have experienced outstanding support, such as flexible schedules, leave for training and deployment, and continued benefits during absences.
By earning the Freedom Award, the company joins a select group of employers who set the standard for supporting those who serve, strengthening both the national defense and their own workplace.

“Earning this award is a tremendous honor for Graham, to support our heroes who fight for our nation and give them the peace of mind that we have their back. This is the least we can do for them,” “It’s also a reminder that our industry provides very rewarding careers for our service men and women who put on the uniform. We are welcoming and supportive of companies that want the best for you and your families during your time of service to our nation and after you transition to civilian life.” said Steve Hauschilt CEO of Graham Construction – a 3G Company.

AUTHOR: DR. SHARON GROSSMAN
In 1879, Thomas Edison was obsessed.
He was trying to invent a practical electric light bulb—a problem that had defeated every scientist and inventor who had attempted it before him.
Edison worked relentlessly. Eighteen-hour days. Sleeping in his lab. Skipping meals. Running experiment after experiment, testing thousands of materials for the perfect filament.
His wife and family complained. His health suffered. Friends worried he was destroying himself.
But Edison had a different view. He famously said:
"I never did a day's work in my life. It was all fun."

For more than a century, we've held Edison as the model of success. The genius who sacrificed everything for his work. Who blurred the lines between professional and personal life. Who proved that greatness requires total dedication.
And we built an entire work culture around that myth.
We glorified the all-nighters. Celebrated the weekend warriors. Promoted the people who answered emails at midnight. Created an unspoken rule: If you want to be exceptional, you sacrifice the personal for the professional.
Work-life balance became the answer. The correction. The boundary.
"Don't be like Edison," we said. "Draw a line. Protect your personal time. Leave work at work."
But here's the problem...
Both models are broken.
Because Edison wasn't sacrificing his life for his work. He was living his life through his work. For him, there was no separation. No balance to maintain. No sacrifice being made.
The work wasn't draining his life. It was expressing it.
And when we tell people to "balance" work and life as if they're opposing forces on a scale, we create a lie that's making everyone miserable.
The real problem isn't that people work too much. It's that we've designed work to be fundamentally separated from what makes life meaningful.
Today, we're in the middle of a massive shift.
The "work-life balance" movement didn't solve the problem. It just created a different kind of exhaustion—people spending 40-60 hours per week doing things that drain them, then trying to "balance" that with a few hours of things that fulfill them.
It's like trying to balance poison with antidote. You're still being poisoned. You're just medicating it.
And the best people—the ones with options, with leverage, with choices—are walking away from companies that force them to choose.
Because here's what's becoming clear...
The future isn't work-life balance. It's work-life integration. And the distinction is everything.

By Scott Prickett, Wellness Patriots

The construction industry continues to wrestle with how to control rising overhead costs — from materials and fuel to insurance and wages. But perhaps no line item has become more frustrating than employee healthcare.
Year after year, employers are asked to spend more — often 10%+ increases annually — for benefits packages that deliver less.¹ This erosion has turned once-premium healthcare into a catastrophic insurance model that many employees can’t even afford to use.
Today’s workforce is increasingly going without care. Consider these national trends:
• 3-week average wait time for a primary care appointment
• Over 40% of working-age Americans lack a primary care provider
• 28% of adults report delaying or avoiding care due to cost?
For contractors, this trend is dangerous. Delayed care can lead to jobsite incidents, chronic health issues, and lost productivity — all of which impact the bottom line.
Contractors understand that their success depends on the people in the field and the office. When workers can’t access care — or don’t trust the system to support them — they’re more likely to:
• Miss work or arrive unwell
• Push through illness or injury (risking safety issues)
• Develop unmanaged chronic conditions that reduce long-term output
Employers are also left to manage increasing claims ratios and renewals with little control and no practical tools to reverse the trend.
That’s why a growing number of CEOs, CFOs, and COOs are exploring Direct Primary Care (DPC) — a modern, insurancefree model that connects employees directly to physicians.

Direct Primary Care isn’t just a buzzword — national media is taking notice. In a 2025 *Wall Street Journal* op-ed, DPC is celebrated for offering patients “same- or next-day appointments, visits as long as necessary, direct access to the physician via cellphone, text messages and email.” Earlier, a 2017 WSJ feature summarized the model simply: “it’s just doctor and patient.”
More measured data supports its effectiveness. A Society of Actuaries study cited in the *Wall Street Journal* reported that DPC patients experienced 40% fewer emergency-room visits and 19.9% fewer hospital admissions, illustrating the downstream impact of proactive primary care.
The concept isn’t new either — *The New York Times* has been reporting on DPC since at least 2012, noting how the model evolved from concierge-style care to an accessible, flat-fee approach that delivers “more care up front for $54 a month.”
Instead of navigating insurance networks and claim forms, employees pay a low monthly fee for unlimited access to care. In return, doctors spend more time with patients, offer virtual and in-person appointments, and help manage conditions before they escalate.
“DPC isn’t a replacement for insurance — it’s a deflection strategy,” explains Scott Prickett, founder of Wellness Patriots, a leading provider of DPC solutions in the Midwest. “It handles the 8090% of healthcare needs that insurance never touches efficiently or affordably.”

While DPC offerings vary, leading programs (like those from Wellness Patriots) offer:
• Unlimited access to virtual and in-person primary care
• 24/7 access to bilingual physicians
• Prescription discounts and chronic condition support
• Health screenings and lab panels
• Nationwide provider access within 24 hours
For as little as $50 per month per employee, employers can offer real healthcare — not just insurance. And they do it without disrupting existing PPO or HMO plans.
DPC plans:
• Improve employee morale and retention
• Reduce minor claims on the prime health plan
• Encourage early treatment and prevention
• Scale easily for full-time and part-time staff
Expanding the Strategy: Aplos and Exemplar Care for Cost Reduction
In response to the growing need for affordable, customizable benefits, contractors now have access to innovative solutions like **Aplos**, an alternative to the traditional BUCAS model. Developed with cost-containment in mind, Aplos integrates with **Exemplar Care** — a provider network known for offering urgent care and direct access at significantly lower costs. This combination helps employers deflect expensive claims from their primary health plan and keep their renewal ratios healthy.
Through Wellness Patriots, contractors gain access to Aplos as part of a broader Direct Primary Care approach. The result is a simplified, flexible model that emphasizes access, affordability, and proactive care — especially important in industries where downtime equals lost revenue.
Another emerging tool for small and mid-sized businesses is the **Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA)**. This IRS-approved model allows employers to reimburse employees for health insurance they purchase individually — while retaining tax advantages.
ICHRAs are gaining traction in industries like construction, where firms seek to offer meaningful benefits without the overhead and rigidity of group plans. Employers can set reimbursement limits and let workers choose plans that fit their unique needs. It's a win for personalization, predictability, and cost control.
When combined with Direct Primary Care, ICHRAs give contractors a modern benefit framework: predictable costs, wide access to care, and empowered employees who feel supported — without blowing up the balance sheet.
It’s a win-win: healthier workers, lower costs, and a modernized benefits package without headaches.
Contractors know their team is their greatest asset. It’s time the benefits they offer reflect that.
Direct Primary Care is already helping contractors across the Midwest break the cycle of rising costs and disengaged care. If you’re ready to join the shift, Wellness Patriots can help guide your firm toward a smarter solution.

In 2025, Master Builders of Iowa launched something new—an initiative grounded in courage, collaboration, and a shared belief that Iowa’s construction industry is stronger when everyone has the opportunity to thrive. What began as a bold idea quickly became a movement.
Thanks to the commitment of our members and partners, the inaugural MBI BuildHer Community exceeded expectations. In its first year, MBI BuildHer generated 523 participant engagements, secured company pledges from more than 70 MBI member companies and received financial support from 11 partners. These early results sent a clear message: Iowa’s commercial construction industry is ready to lead.
That momentum mattered. MBI BuildHer is now formally embedded in VISION 2030—MBI’s five-year strategic plan, ensuring long-term commitment to advancing a more diverse, inclusive, and resilient construction workforce across the state. MBI BuildHer was created to celebrate the strengths women bring to construction, amplify their voices, and inspire the next generation to see this industry as a place where they belong. At its core, MBI BuildHer is about growth—for individuals, companies, and the industry as a whole.

It is also intentionally inclusive. MBI BuildHer is a space where women can build confidence and leadership capacity, and where men can become allies and advocates—recognizing that diverse perspectives strengthen teams, improve communication, and drive better outcomes on every project. What began as a program has evolved into a community grounded in shared learning, mutual respect, and collective progress.
As MBI BuildHer moves into 2026, the initiative is entering a new chapter—one reflected in an updated brand identity that mirrors its purpose and momentum. The refreshed brand reinforces a simple but powerful message: Building Her While Elevating All. This evolution reflects what participants and companies have shown us— MBI BuildHer is not about exclusion or division. It is about building a stronger industry together, one where culture, leadership, and opportunity align to attract and retain top talent. We have 13 partner members that are financially supporting for 2026 showcased below.
The 2026 MBI BuildHer Community builds directly on last year’s success, with expanded programming designed to meet members where they are and support real-world applications. This year’s community will feature six impactful events—three in-person and three virtual— focused on leadership development, communication, culture, and professional growth. The mix of delivery formats ensures accessibility across the state while preserving the connection and dialogue that made the inaugural year so powerful. Each event is designed to move beyond conversation into action—equipping participants with practical tools they can apply personally, professionally, and within their organizations.

Pledge to actively promote and support the inclusion and advancement of women in the commercial construction workforce. We recognize that an inclusive workforce strengthens our industry and drives success for all.
Scan the code above and pledge your commitment!
One of the most meaningful outcomes of MBI BuildHer’s first year has been the BuildHer Company Pledge. To date, 73 MBI member companies have publicly committed to advancing women in construction by fostering inclusive workplaces, supporting professional development, and promoting respect and opportunity at every level.
These pledges are more than symbolic—they represent accountability and leadership. Participating companies are helping set a new standard for Iowa’s construction industry, demonstrating that cultural change starts with intentional action. If your company has not yet taken the pledge, we invite you to do so and stand alongside your peers in shaping the future of our workforce.
Whether you participated last year or are considering MBI BuildHer for the first time, now is the time to engage. The 2026 BuildHer Community welcomes women and men from all roles and career stages who are committed to learning, growth, and industry advancement.
We encourage you to:
• Register for the 2026 MBI BuildHer Community

As of the publishing of this article, we wanted to provide you with an accurate update on how the 2026 Legislative Session is progressing.
A. MBI Position: Advocate against any changes to the SAVE penny for K-12 education.
There are proposed changes to SAVE included in the Governor’s property tax proposal. Meetings are ongoing and we have expressed our opposition to these changes.
B. MBI Position: If granted an opportunity, present an alternative to the current K-12 school bond referendum dates as giving schools ability to go to an either/or vote once a year.

The entire attitude of the Legislature is about cutting property taxes, and our message about giving more flexibility to public owners, has been a struggle to say the least.
C. MBI Position: advocate for responsible changes to TIF if any, to ensure that the tool remains robust and reliable for communities.
These conversations have largely been around perpetual TIF districts to date, although there are now 5 different TIF bills that are being considered.

A. MBI Position: Advocate that any requirements to use E-Verify remain on public employers and advocate against requiring private employers to be required to use E-Verify.
We feel optimistic that there will not be mandates on private employers related to E-Verify. The bills that have passed have been on public employers.
3. 4. 2.
A. MBI Position: SUDAS does play a positive role in our industry, but we recognize that the role lacks industry representation. Advocate for industry representation to the SUDAS Board rather than disbanding or defunding SUDAS.

There are ongoing conversations about a bill that would give MBI a two-seat representation on a newly created board. We stress that this needs to include design professionals, including engineers.
A. MBI Position: Advocate for a strong RIIF bill that prioritizes vertical infrastructure needs for the State of Iowa, while not diverting funds for noninfrastructure needs.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Ben Hammes at BHammes@MBI.Build.
We encourage all MBI members to review the RFP once created and come up with new and innovative ideas and ways to partner with nonprofits and educational institutions who are or will be encouraging kids to enter the trades. The mission of this fund is focused heavily on the direct placement of people entering the commercial construction workforce. We believe that the opportunities that come out of MBIWORKS will have a lasting impact on the future of the construction workforce. Starting in June 2026, members will be able to apply for this funding stream through our website, at www.MBI. Build/MBIWORKS
Now is a great time to start thinking about these ideas for your proposals. Your collective help in forging these partnerships with non-profits and educational institutions to create a worthwhile project/program is vital when shaping the future of workforce in the commercial construction industry.

Spring brings unpredictable weather patterns to the State of Iowa that can quickly create hazardous conditions on construction sites. High winds, lightning, and heavy rainfall are common seasonal threats that increase the risk of struckby incidents, electrical hazards, slips and falls, and trench collapses. Under regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in 29 CFR 1926, employers are required to protect workers from recognized hazards, including those caused by severe weather. Proactive planning and daily weather awareness are essential components of maintaining a safe job site.

Employers and supervisors should monitor forecasts before and throughout each workday, particularly when storms are predicted. Upon beginning work at a job site, consider confirming which weather application with alerts team leaders may use. Loose materials and equipment must be secured to prevent them from becoming airborne in high winds. Elevated work should be suspended immediately if lightning is observed or thunder is heard. After heavy rain, walking and working surfaces should be inspected for stability, and trenches must be evaluated for water accumulation or signs of cave-in hazards before entry is permitted. These preventive measures significantly reduce the likelihood of injuries during rapidly changing weather conditions.
Preparedness also requires clear communication and employee awareness. By prioritizing weather readiness each day, construction employers can reinforce a culture of safety and ensure compliance while protecting their workforce.

Workers should know
• The location of designated shelters
• Understand evacuation procedures
• Feel empowered to stop work when conditions become unsafe.
Severe weather is a predictable seasonal risk, but injuries and fatalities are preventable with proper planning, training, and oversight.
For questions or more information on how to prepare your team, please reach out to Luke Longman at Luke@IowaCSSI.com.

Members can have a designated person and/ or people post available jobs on the job board in real time at their discretion. These jobs that are posted will be prominently displayed, and future employees will be able to view all the jobs on the job board and will have the ability to apply for said position. If your company does not have a designated contact for the job board and would like to, please have that person reach out to Andy Swanson at the email listed below.
The job board is a tool for members to use as they look to grow/expand their company. The value that this provides to MBI members is extremely lucrative. We market the job board all over the State of Iowa, so it is important to make sure that you utilize it as often as you can. Workforce is an issue in most industries, so this is one way in which we can help boost those numbers in a positive way. Our goal has always been to dedicate resources to help our members add quality employees, and MBI’s job board helps to achieve this.
If you are interested in posting on our job board, please contact Andy Swanson at ASwanson@MBI.Build or visit the MBI Job Board at www.iowaconstructionjobs.com.

"Leadership is not about being in charge; it's about taking care of those in your charge." – Simon Sinek. Each one of our educational series is designed to help participants develop self-awareness as leaders, empowering them to inspire and guide others toward becoming leaders themselves.
The Leadership Experience graduated with 21 participants on March 27th. Participants in The Leadership Experience engaged in four dynamic, interactive learning experiences, each crafted to deepen their leadership skills. Each experience included pre-session assignments, insightful lessons by David, team exercises, and networking opportunities with participants. As a unique bonus, David provided a confidential space for personal growth and development through 1:1 coaching. Great construction leadership goes beyond technical expertise; it’s about your character, your ability to inspire others, and your journey as a leader - through both triumphs and challenges- and this is exactly what our 23 participants gained.

MB EYE on the Future graduated with 32 participants preceding the 2026 Winter Conference. With the 2nd year of the transformed curriculum, Jake Thompson, Dan and Lori Shows, and Tara Rinehart brought their energy and knowledge to this group of young leaders. Participants were encouraged to step outside of their comfort zones while gaining communication and relationship-building skills. Participants worked to boost their confidence, communication, and leadership skills and become a more effective and charismatic leader for themselves and their teams. The capstone speeches truly exemplified all these skills wrapped up into one event. MB EYE on the Future is the only program that MBI offers that has an application process, which requires an employer's recommendation and selection procedure. Participants were nominated by their company’s executive management and completed an application for consideration in the program. Our committee chose the top 32 with only 2 allowed per company.

Project Managers & Project Supervisors graduated 41 participants on December 19th during this refreshed format driven through work of our Education Advocacy Committee. The updates were very well received by participants, who felt the transformation was a great move and added meaningful value to the experience. And we took it on the road! This interactive program was designed specifically for PMs and Superintendents and focused on improving job performance, teamwork, and project profitability. Success of a construction team, project or company often boils down to a few key components that, if carefully combined, can lead to great accomplishments where everybody wins. Employees, companies, and customers can all win with the proper combination of teamwork, leadership, communication, accountability, personal responsibility, budgeting and quality control on every project, every day. Participants were challenged as project team members to understand project budgets, elevate individual and team performance, understand customer dynamics, and even have fun in the process. This was an outstanding opportunity to put our members in a teamwork atmosphere of learning and professional growth. The new presenter lineup was spot on, featuring respected industry professionals covering job profit, productivity, contracts, delegation, and the people side of project success.

Foundations of a Field Leader graduated 33 participants on March 7th. This field leadership development program is in its 9th year and has been completely transformed. Leading a team, crew, or group of individuals in a commercial construction project environment takes an exceptional person with the right skill set and personality, along with construction knowledge and awareness and it begins with leading yourself. Leaders in the field must be able to manage time, equipment, materials, and most importantly, people. This series provided attendees with a unique blended approach to leadership development with content being presented from both a theory and conceptual approach, while also being reinforced with examples and activities specific to the commercial construction project perspective. The Foundations of a Field Leader course was led by Nic Bittle, founder of Workforce Pro, a leadership development organization that partners with companies to create highperforming teams. Nic has over 20 years of experience in leadership development and workforce training and is the author of four books. His passion for helping individuals grow as leaders made him the perfect guide for this transformative course. Nic’s engaging approach to leadership training provided participants with actionable strategies to apply in your daily work.

Managers often believe their biggest challenge is having too much work. In reality, the problem is more specific: they’re carrying too many monkeys.
In management terms, a “monkey” is the next action required to move a task forward. Every project, problem, or decision has one. Ideally, that monkey sits on the shoulders of the person responsible for the work.
But in many organizations, monkeys quietly migrate upward—until the manager ends up carrying far more than their share.
The transfer usually happens during a short conversation. A subordinate walks into the manager’s office and says: “We have a problem. What should we do?”
At this moment, the monkey sits squarely on the subordinate’s shoulders. They own the problem.
But what happens next determines who leaves the room carrying it. If the manager says:
• “LET ME THINK ABOUT IT.”
• “LEAVE IT WITH ME.”
• “I'LL GET BACK TO YOU.”
The monkey has just jumped onto the manager’s back. The employee leaves relieved. The manager leaves responsible.
This process is called upward delegation—and it happens dozens of times a week in most organizations.
Managers only have a limited amount of discretionary time— the time available for planning, coaching, decision-making, and strategy.
Every time a monkey jumps onto their back, that time shrinks.
Eventually the manager spends their day:
• answering questions
• chasing follow-ups
• making routine decisions
Meanwhile, the real work of leadership goes undone. Even worse, employees begin to rely on the manager as the problem solver
A manager’s role is to ensure that problems are solved at the right level of the organization.
Managers should supervise monkeys—not carry them. That means ensuring every monkey:
• has a clear owner
• receives attention at the right time
• continues to move forward
But the responsibility for feeding the monkey must remain with the person who owns the work.
Before leaving a conversation, both manager and subordinate must agree on what the next action is. If the next step isn't clear, the monkey cannot be managed.
Every monkey must sit on one person’s shoulders. Managers may advise—but they do not take ownership.
A monkey must receive attention at appropriate intervals. If a task requires action tomorrow, the owner must act tomorrow.
Managers ensure monkeys are fed—but the owner does the feeding.
Never end a conversation with:
“Keep me posted.”
Instead say:
“Let’s review your progress tomorrow afternoon.”
This keeps the monkey with the employee while ensuring accountability.
Managers should carry only the monkeys that belong at their level—strategic decisions, leadership responsibilities, and organizational priorities.
Everything else must remain with the team. 5 5

The Build Iowa Award is the industry’s highest individual achievement, and it is presented each year to a builder in Iowa. The 2026 recipient, Paul Koester, certainly embodies the tenants --- Skill, Integrity and Responsibility. During his 40+ years in construction, 21 of those years were spent actively supporting MBI’s mission in a leadership position of one form or another. From serving on the Scholarship and Academic Advisory Committee all the way up to his service as MBI Board Chair in 2022, Paul has maintained his strong support and belief of MBI’s mission.
His extremely impressive MBI resume includes a 5-year term on the MBI Board of Directors during which he served as Treasurer, Vice-Chair and Board Chairman.
During his tenure as chair in 2022, his efforts saw the completion of MBI’s new headquarters building as well as MBI being nationally recognized by the AGC of America as the state chapter with the largest membership increase in one year. In addition, while chairing, MBI saw the culmination of over 15 years of policy work with legislation being passed that allowed Construction Manager at Risk in public procurement. And as a long-time supporter of the MBI-PAC, he is always willing to lend his support to MBI’s public affairs efforts.
Congratulations Paul!

BY TARA RINEHART VICE PRESIDENT OF INDUSTRY EDUCATION
In an industry defined by precision, performance, and progress, standing still is not an option. The most successful professionals in commercial construction share a common trait: they are lifelong learners.
Lifelong learning is more than attending a class or earning a certificate. It is a mindset — a commitment to continuous improvement, professional curiosity, and personal growth over the course of a career. It means remaining open to new ideas, refining leadership skills, strengthening technical expertise, and consistently raising the bar.
That is exactly what the Master Builder Designation (MBD) represents.
The MBD Program was established to recognize professionals in Iowa’s commercial construction industry who actively invest in their development through MBI’s education and training opportunities. It honors those who understand that excellence is not accidental — it is intentional.
To earn the designation, participants complete 150 education and training credits across six key categories:

These categories reflect the full scope of what it takes to be a well-rounded construction leader — not only technical proficiency, but strong communication, sound judgment, strategic thinking, and ethical responsibility.
One of the most powerful aspects of the MBD Program is its accessibility:
• No cost to enroll
• No required completion timeline
• No pressure — work at your own pace
Participants can track their credits through the Training Vault or the MBI App, and they receive notifications about upcoming qualifying programs throughout the year. If you are already attending MBI training, you are likely earning credits — why not make them count toward something meaningful?

The path is flexible. The impact is lasting.
Upon completing 150 credits, participants are recognized at MBI's Winter Conference and presented with a distinctive Master Builder Achievement Award. Designed specifically for this accomplishment, the award symbolizes dedication, discipline, and professional excellence.
It is more than a trophy. It is a visible commitment to the craft — and a standard others can aspire to.
For employers, promoting the Master Builder Designation demonstrates a tangible commitment to employee growth. It establishes clear, measurable goals, supports workforce development, and strengthens engagement and retention. Organizations that prioritize education cultivate high-performing teams prepared to meet today’s challenges and tomorrow’s opportunities.
For employees, working toward the MBD provides focus and motivation. Setting and achieving professional goals fosters confidence, pride, and a deeper sense of purpose. The designation reflects initiative, discipline, and a drive to excel — qualities that define leaders in our industry.
MBI members have long understood that sustained success requires sustained learning. The Master Builder Designation formalizes that commitment and elevates it. If you are ready to invest in yourself — or ready to challenge your team to reach higher — now is the time to get involved.
Be part of a community that values growth. Be recognized for your commitment to excellence. Here are some of our previous winners who display their trophies proudly.

BY CHAD KLEPPE PRESIDENT & CEO
In August, MBI will be releasing MBI Source1. This is our new project information platform designed to streamline how contractors, design professionals, and suppliers provide access to the opportunities that shape their business. MBI Source1 will simplify the project information process by delivering faster insights, cleaner data, and a more intuitive user experience — ultimately helping you make better decisions to stay ahead in an increasingly competitive bidding environment. MBI has engaged a team of consultants with Altus CXO who are building the platform based on feedback and due diligence from Iowa-based general contractors, specialty contractors, suppliers and service providers. This is undoubtedly a big step for MBI.
First established in 1986 by the Master Builders of Iowa’s Board of Directors and officially incorporated in 1989, the Construction Update Plan Room Network has been a fixture in Iowa and surrounding areas for decades. However, well before MBI’s venture into physical plan rooms, this organization has been operating in the “exchange” space for contractors since 1918.

At its peak,
OVER 2,300
Throughout the 1980’s and 90’s, the Construction Update Plan Room Network grew to include up to 10 physical plan room locations throughout the state. At the time, there was a dedicated team of project information specialists who staffed the plan rooms and were diligently capturing projects to be shared with plan room subscribers. Through this process, MBI’s network created lasting relationships with contractors – generals and specialty – along with vendors, and service providers who desired project information for bidding purposes. An equally important aspect of our plan room business was to continuously work to build a network of architects who shared project information to attract interested bidders. This created a footprint by which bidding documents for nearly every public project in the state of Iowa would be shared through a plan room location in which MBI owned and operated. MBI’s efforts also included the creation of plan deposit cards so that plan room subscribers could check-out plans with the full faith and credit of the Master Builders of Iowa. This service avoided the need for subscribers to provide a deposit check for each set of plans and made the distribution of plans and specs much simpler.
commercial construction firms utilized MBI’s Construction Update Plan Room Network.
Late in the 1990’s, the winds of change brought in the advent of the digital plan room that shared project information via the internet. This was a major shift in how project information was disseminated amongst design professionals and the bidding community. The MBI Board of Directors saw this change and immediately looked to find a partner to help MBI stay ahead of the curve.
During the search process, the Board identified a number of service providers, but through the selection process it became clear that there was really only one company with whom MBI could trust its plan room business – Construction Software Technologies, Inc. and its iSqFt.com platform. In February 2001, MBI inked an agreement with CST which ushered in a new way to share project bidding information.
For the next 17 years, MBI maintained and staffed its network of 10 physical plan rooms while simultaneously aggregating and sourcing project information and working to introduce and eventually move subscribers to the iSqFt. com platform. Then in late 2017, MBI closed its last physical plan room and focused solely on its partnership with ConstructConnect (CST rebranded to ConstructConnect in 2016.)
ConstructConnect has over the years revolutionized preconstruction, the bid management process, and collection of leads and market analytics for the betterment of construction firms throughout North America and is to be commended for this vision. Throughout the 25-year partnership between ConstructConnect and MBI, the collaboration helped to re-defined the Iowa project information market.
Over the years, there have been many different iterations of agreements in which both sides would agree upon prior to renewal. But like in many longterm partnerships, there comes a time where there is a divergence of perspectives. We have reached that point and subsequently, the most recent agreement between MBI and ConstructConnect will not be renewed and is set to expire on July 31, 2026.
It has become clear that the best long-term solution for MBI will be to move forth with our own project information service (i.e. MBI Source1). By doing so, MBI can build upon its nearly 5 decades in the plan room business, which includes years of building trusted relationships with contractors as well as design professionals.

Through MBI Source1, MBI can control: the development of the platform its pricing marketing product quality control local customer service and outreach platform upgrades geographical boundaries the type of projects posted on the platform
And many other positive aspects that enable MBI to ensure performance and product enrichment. Also, with MBI at the helm the information will be Iowafocused and not overwhelmed with regional and national data.
MBI Source1 will go live on August 1, 2026. This date marks the culmination of months of building a user-friendly and simplified project information platform that takes into account the needs of contractors and design professionals. As noted earlier, this is a big step for MBI. But we move forth knowing that we have built a project information service that has over 5 decades of relationships and a reputation for being the essential resource for Iowa’s commercial building industry.
MBI will not renew contract

(MBI LIVE) Procore for Project Managers - Procore Scheduling - Keeping Projects on Task
Procore is a powerful and flexible project management platform, but many teams are expected to learn it with minimal guidance. Whether it’s a quick overview or a link to the help files, that approach rarely sets users up for success. While basic tasks may seem straightforward, features like financial workflows, custom templates, and schedule management require a deeper understanding to use effectively. With the right training, Procore becomes a true productivity tool. You can streamline document approvals, automate repetitive tasks, track scheduling changes across your team, and create custom templates that reflect your standard operating procedures. These features don’t just improve efficiency – they save time, reduce costly mistakes, and keep your projects moving forward.

Strategies to Promote Recovery in the Workplace
Behavioral health has a major impact on construction company performance, including productivity, quality, risk management, safety, and ultimately profitability. Traditional approaches to addressing behavioral health in the workplace have not yielded improvements in care seeking among employees.
Drug-Free workplace policies and drug testing protocols set minimum expectations for workplace conduct. However, these policies and protocols have limitations, including creating stigma that creates barriers to workers seeking help for substance misuse and substance use disorder. Companies embracing the RecoveryReady Workplace movement recognize that creating a stigma-free environment can provide pathways for recovery for workers and families seeking to address substance use, misuse, and substance use disorder.
A panel of subject matter experts will be assembled to help share key insights on building a recovery-ready workforce culture. Selected representatives from the following professions and/or organizations will include legal, Employee Assistance Program, addiction treatment and recovery counselor or peer support specialist, and/or community-based organizations.
