The success of our school depends on all of us and I am immensely grateful for all the support from our Maryknoll family, parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, alumni and friends over the years. Each year, we acknowledge the generous contributions made to our school, contributions that go far in helping us to make our tuition as affordable as possible. A quality education is very important to all of our parents and your generosity helps make that possible. In this issue of the Knoller, we acknowledge by name all those who gave to Maryknoll in the most recently completed fiscal year, 2014-2015. We are most thankful for their part in helping provide a quality education to our students. We are also grateful for all those who took part in the 17th annual Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Award and Scholarship Dinner in April and the school’s 40th annual luau in October and all the alumni who returned for the annual Alumni Week festivities this past summer, including golf, bowling, reunions and a lunch that brings together alumni from the Class of 1937 to our most recent graduates. It is a time to reconnect, renew friendships and rekindle memories. If you have not yet experienced any of these events, I encourage you to become a part of at least one of these traditions. I also encourage you to visit our website, www.maryknollschool.org to get a sense of all that is happening at Maryknoll. These are exciting times for the school and you will hear much more about many programs in the coming months. We’ve come far in the 88 years since the Maryknoll Sisters started our school and we have not stopped growing, innovating and reaching for new heights. Aquaponics at Maryknoll TEXT BY STEPHANIE CONCHING

aq·ua·pon·ics (noun): a system of aquaculture in which the waste produced by farmed fish or other aquatic animals supplies nutrients for plants grown hydroponically, which in turn purify the water. The typical classroom has a bulletin board with student work, a shelf with books for kids to read, and desktop computers for those important technology connections. In many rooms, you may also find a class pet or a fish tank. At Maryknoll we’ve got all that…and then some. Our fish tank is 300 gallons of water with at least 20 tilapia swimming. And it isn’t in just one room, it’s on the third floor bridge so all of our students can enjoy it. Our tilapia are connected to an aquaponics system that grows herbs like rosemary and chives, alongside leafy greens like ong choy and swiss chard. The concept of aquaponics is for fish waste to fertilize plants which will process the waste and return clean water to the fish. Kristopher Kern ‘98, now a fifth grade teacher, was in search of hands-on service projects for middle school 2

students when he made the connection between an exciting idea and a sustainability venture. An Internet search lead him to Kevin Kawamoto, who designed our aquaponics system in October 2013. Classes visited the installation and received mini-lectures about the process of an aquaponics system. “The fish feed plants and the plants feed the fish,” could be heard during each presentation. Last year, we used the greens in morning smoothies organized by our physical education teachers. Mr. Kern’s vision is to have the entire third floor bridge filled with aquaponics systems. It could be soon in our future that classes will be eating lunch grown right in the schoolyard! Maryknoll has worm bins in several grade levels to compost food waste from lunch and will be putting in a rain garden in the near future.

Four decades of students fondly remember Sr. Marie Patrice Kehoe MM, Maryknoll teacher and then nurse, for her kind-heartedness and compassion and her great happiness at being a Maryknoll Sister. She made every student feel special. Sr. Patrice died on August 8, 2014, at the age of 91 at Maryknoll, New York not long after she had entered hospice and some nine years after she left her beloved Hawaii and Maryknoll School. She entered the Maryknoll Sisters on December 8, 1941, and received the religious name of Marie Patrice. She taught for a year in Boston’s Chinatown before being missioned to Hawaii. In 1970 she returned to New York and earned her RN degree. She returned to Hawaii in 1974 and worked at St. Francis Hospital for two years and then served as a nurseteacher in Majuro. She returned to New York in 1979 and worked as a nurse and coordinator of health services at the Maryknoll Sisters Nursing Home. In 1981 she transferred to Monrovia, CA where she served as clinic nurse in the Maryknoll Sisters residence until returning to Hawaii in 1985. ...continued on page 5 3

Marge Fox, formerly Sister Michael Marie Fox, a Maryknoll Missioner and principal of Maryknoll High School from 1959 to 1964, died on June 19, 2013. She was 93 and had lived in Delray Beach, Florida, for more than 25 years. She had suffered a stroke in October 2012 and had been in declining health. Born in The Bronx, New York Sept. 27, 1919, Marge grew up in Port Washington and attended Our Lady of Mercy Academy. After high school, Marge got a job with the New York Life Insurance Company in New York City. She worked there for almost five years, during which time she felt called to the religious life. She applied and was accepted by Maryknoll but before she could join the order her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Marge postponed her entrance into Maryknoll and stayed home to care for her mother, who passed away six months later. Marge then entered Maryknoll as Sister Michael Marie Fox in September 1943. After attending the Maryknoll teacher training school, Marge was assigned to Hawaii in 1948. She began her career there teaching first grade. Her nephew said none of her training prepared her to face 63 first graders, and he said Marge recalled that her first thought upon walking into that classroom was, “What do I do?” Later, Marge was sent to study for her master’s degree at Fordham University in New York City, and in time she did post-graduate work at Columbia University, the University of Hawaii, and Tel Aviv University. She returned to Hawaii as principal of Maryknoll High School in 1959, a position she held until being called back to New York in 1964. Many students at Maryknoll High School remember Marge as being stern but always with a twinkle in her eye and a kind 4

heart. She admitted in a conversation in September 2012 that her stern demeanor was her “game face.” One student, Diane Enos ‘62, remembered Marge as a “strong and gentle woman” who made her feel “safe and affirmed.” Upon leaving Hawaii, Marge returned to New York and was a member of the faculty of Mary Rogers College – the Maryknoll Teacher Training School – from 1964 to 1969. This was a time of social and political unrest in the U.S. and religious upheaval in the church in the wake of Vatican II. One of her Maryknoll friends, Sister Dolores Rosso, recalled Marge being the first of the nuns to delve into the feminist literature of the times, as well as being heavily engaged in discussions about how to implement the directives and spirit of Vatican II. Sister Dolores said she thought Marge was disappointed at the slow pace of change at Maryknoll after Vatican II and that this probably was an important factor in her decision to leave Maryknoll in 1970. With just $300 in her pocket, she and another former nun found a tiny apartment to share. Marge got a job as substitute teacher during the day and taught English to new immigrants at night. In time she was able to get a job as a guidance counselor at a high school in Yonkers, New York. After 17 years of teaching and counseling, Marge retired to Delray Beach, Florida in 1987. She was a long-time caregiver and source of encouragement to her younger sister, Bernadette Bachtler, of Delray Beach, who died in January 2012. Clearly, Marge was a person who understood the Gospel message and who lived a life of service to others. She was an independent spirit with a “try-anything” mindset. Marge is survived by her nieces, Margaret and Anne Bachtler, Theresa Gergela, Bernadette Fox, Mary and Kay Fox, and nephews John and Bill Bachtler. Marge’s ashes were scattered at sea, in accordance with her wishes. Joe Clare attended Maryknoll from 1959 to 1962. He retired from the US Army in 1988 and from the Central Intelligence Agency in 2010, and celebrated a third (and, he thinks, final) retirement from a small commercial company in Reston, Virginia in May 2014. He and his wife, Kathy, have three daughters and two grandsons.

...continued from page 3 Sr. Patrice’s final generous act, said Sr. Rosario Daley was to leave her body to medical science hoping it would help in some discovery to relieve suffering for others. “My guess,” says Mike Baker, “is that when Sister Mary Patrice approached the Pearly Gates not long ago, two people were waiting to receive her – St. Peter, of course, but standing beside him with open arms was Mother Mary Joseph. Like all of her words to her sisters, they were simple and direct, ‘Well done, Patrice, well done!’ ”

We again saw new heights in Maryknoll Athletics in 2014-15 with several state tournament appearances and 658 Maryknoll student athletes participating in 31 sports. It was a stellar year, but in the end it’s not about winning and losing for our Spartan student athletes, it’s about humility, a good work ethic and respect. The Fall sports season kicked off with seven runners, led by Sage Tong ‘15, going to the Cross Country State Championship. Also in the Fall, seven Maryknoll bowlers participated in the Bowling State Championship in Kona. Our bowlers were led by Keoni Inaba ‘15, Justin Agsalud ‘15, Malia Ankrom ‘15, and Alyssa Nakaoka ‘15. 6

Winter brought another round of student athletes participating in state championships. The Girls Division II Soccer Team (PAC-Five) made a back-to-back appearance at the state championship, finishing third. Nine Maryknoll girls contributed to the program. The girls basketball program, led by long-time staff member Thomas “Chico” Furtado captured the ILH championship. Furtado was honored as ILH Coach of the Year and it was the first ILH championship for the Maryknoll Girls Basketball Team since 1978. The Spartans were led by ILH Player of the Year Maegan Martin ‘15 and Kylie Cambra ‘15. Maryknoll also sent five swimmers to the State Swimming

& Diving Championships led by Katherine Guevara ‘15 and two student athletes to the State Wrestling Championship, led by Taylor Higa ‘15.

The Spring sports season was strong from the start. Ninth grader Alyssa-Mae Mateo ‘18 made it into the Hawaii High School Golf Championship. Although much younger than many of her competitors, Alyssa-Mae was tied on top of the leaderboard heading into the final round and finished fourth. A trio of Spartans, led by Taylor Higa ‘15, participated in the PAC-Five Judo team and made it to the Hawaii High School Judo Championship. And Craig Shaner ‘16 made a trip to the State Track and Field Championships in the 3,000-meter event. The Lady Spartan Softball team made a return trip to the HHSSA State Softball Championship led by Shayna Ige ‘15 and Sheryna Labasan ‘15 (ILH Player of the Year), and the ladies played their hearts out in

what was described by the media and those who were there as an “instant classic” because of the closeness of the game right to the final pitch. The Boys Baseball team continued their impressive play in 2014-15 and repeated state championship play. The Spartans accomplished something very few teams have done, a three-peat of the State Division II Baseball Championship. They were led by a quartet of four-year lettermen who will be missed (Neil Nakasone ‘15, Trevor Hirano ‘15, Jason Nakamura ‘15, and State DII Player of the Year Joshua Muneno ‘15). Our senior student athletes played hard, were humble and showed true Spartan qualities. I’m proud to say they are now alumni who will continue to represent the Maryknoll values we have seen them display.

The Student Athlete of the Year Award is presented to the senior male and female student who have been outstanding in one or more sports. They best personify the Maryknoll giving spirit summed up by the school motto “Noblesse Oblige”. It is they who best accept the Spartan Challenge showing strength, leadership, courage, loyalty, and perseverance both on and off the playing field.

The Scholar Athlete Award is presented to the senior male and female student who have been outstanding scholars and fine athletes. This winning combination - excellence in both academics and athletics is a goal many aspire to , but only few achieve.

As Maryknoll School’s first athletic director, Brother Venard Ruane truly exemplified the Spartan philosophy of upstanding moral values, sportsmanship, school spirit, and inspiration to their team. This award is presented to those athletes who have best personified Brother Venard Ruane and have been most inspirational throughout their senior season. 7

Each year, alumni, parents, grandparents, businesses and foundations make an investment in Maryknoll School and its students. In the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2015, $1,214,367 came to us as gifts to be used for the good of the school. We are so grateful for this generosity and faith in us. There are many ways to give to Maryknoll, each integral to our ongoing mission: AIM (Annual Investment in Maryknoll) The annual AIM campaign is an essential part of our schoolâ€™s annual budget. AIM supports classrooms and curricula; athletics and physical education programs; arts programs; Campus Ministry; extra-curricular activities; teacher development; technology; and on-going upgrades to the physical plant. All money given to AIM is used in the year in which it is given.

Scholarship Endowment The Maryknoll School Endowment helps to ensure that financial aid is available for the one in four students who need assistance with their tuition. A strong endowment is an investment in the future.

Capital Project Donations Some gifts made to the school are specifically earmarked for on-going projects, such as the upgrades to 21st century classrooms, making possible enhanced learning environments with the latest in technology. The Kekumano Benefit Dinner All proceeds from the annual Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Award & Scholarship Dinner go into the Kekumano Endowed Scholarship. Sixteen scholarships of varying amounts are given annually. Annual School Luau The annual school luau is not only an opportunity to enjoy ono luau food and meet up with old and new friends, but it also helps support the annual Parent Teacher Association budget. It is the largest family event of the year. Since 1927, Maryknoll School has been an important part of this community and the many gifts, large and small, from our generous donors have enabled us to grow and flourish. We are so grateful for the support of each of the people listed in the following pages for their part in making Maryknoll School what it is today. Noblesse Oblige.

The 2015 Noblesse Oblige Award

was presented to Robert and Frances Bean at the 17th annual Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Award & Scholarship Dinner on April 26, 2015. The dinner acknowledges the memory of a good and generous friend of Maryknoll School –Monsignor Charles Kekumano and his commitment to education. Because of the funds raised through the annual dinner, 16 Kekumano scholarships are given to deserving students annually. The Beans have made a lasting impact at Maryknoll and have been instrumental in the school’s continuing renovation of classrooms to innovation and technologydriven 21st century learning spaces. Their other community interests include youth, the arts, women’s health, protecting natural resources and animals. They have made an impact through many other Hawaii organizations, including the Hawaiian Humane Society, the Kapiolani Women’s Center, Hawaii Community Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hawaii, Boys and Girls Club of Honolulu, Honolulu Museum of Art, and Malama Maunalua.

Maryknoll and the Maryknoll Sisters made an impact on Nancy Hada ‘40 Nakamura that she never forgot. When she died in 2007 she left a portion of her estate to Maryknoll, enabling the school to establish the Nancy Nakamura Scholarship and to use some of the money to help with the campaign for the Maryknoll Community Center. Jerry and Mieko Beckers were parishioners at Sacred Heart Church and would walk by the grade school campus on their way to daily Mass. Seeing the children in the playground made an impression and they chose to leave their real estate assets to the school after their death. Today, the proceeds from the sale of that property provide middle school scholarships.

Rudolph A. Sylva ‘35 was in the first graduating class at Maryknoll with his twin brother, Ralph, who went on to be a Maryknoll priest. Rudolph made his career at Hawaiian Electric Co. and when he died in 2000 he left $1.4 million in his will to fund the Rudolph A. and Ralph W. Sylva Scholarship. Since then, the scholarship has provided tuition assistance to numerous Maryknoll students with scholastic merit or scholastic promise each year.

Nancy Nakamura, Rudolph Sylva and the Beckers all made planned gifts during their lifetimes that have reaped benefits many times over in the lives that have been touched by those gifts. That is a legacy that is measured not just by money but also by the transformative difference in the lives of students. These gifts also are examples of the ways that people can make substantive gifts that are greater than they could make from their discretionary income during their lifetime. “Donors often want to help their favorite cause but think they do not have the financial wherewithal to make a meaningful gift or they don’t think they have enough assets to need a will.
