MARYKNOLL— A TRUE FAMILY TRADITION

This fall, Karly Peacock will enter the sixth grade (Class of 2025) at Maryknoll School and will be the fourth generation of the Enos/Nobrega Family to become part of the Maryknoll Ohana. When Vivian Enos Nobrega graduated from Maryknoll in 1937 the school was just 10 years old, the campus was comprised of the old wooden buildings on the Wilder Street campus near the church and her class was the third graduating class. There were 19 students in her graduating class. The Class of 2018 had 136. For the Enos family it was the start of a Maryknoll family that will be at least four generations strong. That family includes: Vivian Enos Nobrega ‘37 Vivian’s brothers: Harold Enos ’39, Edward Enos ’38, Wilfred Enos ’42, and another brother, Walter, attended Maryknoll for a time. Vivian’s nieces: Sr. Diane Enos ’62, Gayle Enos Torres ’65 Vivian’s grandnieces: Stacy Torres ’87, Kellie Torres Harris ‘93 Vivian’s grandnephew: Jon Torres ‘86 A lot has changed at Maryknoll since Vivian graduated, of course, but the spirit of the school remains strong. “We are all very proud to be graduates of Maryknoll,” said Barbara Akau. “The school and its teachers have provided a great education in a nurturing environment where we were also able to learn more about our Catholic faith.” “We all have fond memories of going to school at Maryknoll. The friendships we made there carry on today. We often get together with classmates when they visit even though we may not have been close in high school. The MHS Spartan bond transcends time. “We also have fun memories being involved in school activities and sports. “I am overjoyed and proud that Karly will be able to carry on the tradition being a fourth generation to attend Maryknoll. I am happy that my granddaughter will be able to enjoy the Maryknoll experience like we did.
“When I attended her interview, I literally got choked up just walking on the campus. So many amazing memories came back to me like it was yesterday. It’s so exciting for our family!” Karly is looking forward to the drama and theater opportunities at Maryknoll. She currently takes gymnastics at Hawaiian Island Twisters and has cheered for the Pop Warner Football League. “The Nobrega Family is a true example of the Maryknoll community,” said Shana Tong, Maryknoll vice president of academic affairs. “The legacy of this family represents generations of Maryknollers who embrace the Maryknoll spirit. It is a tribute to what makes Maryknoll special. Families like this bring to mind our alma mater, “To you our loyal hearts we bring Maryknoll, our Maryknoll Thy fame shall through the ages ring Maryknoll, our Maryknoll.” We are grateful for families who continue the Maryknoll legacy through their loyalty. The Maryknoll spirit is alive and well!”

Maryknoll Golf Tournament on Friday, July 13, at Leilehua Golf Course. Lunch and check-in at 11 a.m., shotgun start at noon. Don’t golf? Sign up to volunteer! The Jared Kaufmann Memorial Bowl-A-Rama Tournament will be Sunday, July 15, from noon to 3 p.m. There’ll be bowling, great food and prizes galore at Aiea Bowl. It’s always great fun and you won’t want to miss it. Capping the week is the Alumni Luau Celebration in the Maryknoll Community Center. Dinner is served at 6 p.m., but join us for school tours or attend Mass at Sacred Heart Church at 4 p.m. and social hour at 5 p.m. The stars of the luau are all of our alumni, but the great Hawaiian food and music are right up there too. Alumni Scholarship Award Recipients
The Maryknoll Alumni Association annually gives out two scholarship awards of $1,000 each to two graduating seniors who: Best demonstrate Christian faith and beliefs, bringing Christ’s principles into his or her everyday life. Best demonstrate love and concern for others, are courteous and gracious and willing to share with others. Best demonstrate exceptional integrity, honesty, and character and who are recognized as inspiring role models. Best demonstrate the generosity of giving of time, talent, and treasure and personify the Maryknoll School motto of “Noblesse Oblige.”
The winners are nominated by their peers and selected by the Alumni Association. This year’s scholarships will be given at the Alumni Luau to:

Gelsey has volunteered with United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii, the Annual Lantern Floating Ceremony, cleanups at Diamond Head National Park, the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, and St. Patrick School. She has been active in speech and debate (Grades 10-12) and the Spanish and Korean clubs (Grades 11-12). She made the Principal’s List thr0ughout high school. She received the Center for Tomorrow’s Leaders Emerging Leader of the Year award in Grade 11.
Javier has volunteered at the Next Step shelter, and Goodwill and is an altar server at Star of the Sea Church. He plays tennis and has received the Aeronautics and Engineering Award (grade 11), the CAP Scholastic Excellence Award (Grade 11), the Spanish Award (Grade 10) and was on the Principal’s List throughout high school.

Vivian’s nieces: Sr. Diane Enos ’62, Gayle Enos Torres ’65 Vivian’s grandnieces: Stacy Torres ’87, Kellie Torres Harris ‘93 Vivian’s grandnephew: Jon Torres ‘86 A lot has changed at Maryknoll since Vivian graduated, of course, but the spirit of the school remains strong. “We are all very proud to be graduates of Maryknoll,” said Barbara Akau. “The school and its teachers have provided a great education in a nurturing environment where we were also able to learn more about our Catholic faith.” “We all have fond memories of going to school at Maryknoll. The friendships we made there carry on today. We often get together with classmates when they visit even though we may not have been close in high school. The MHS Spartan bond transcends time. “We also have fun memories being involved in school activities and sports. “I am overjoyed and proud that Karly will be able to carry on the tradition being a fourth generation to attend Maryknoll. I am happy that my granddaughter will be able to enjoy the Maryknoll experience like we did.
“When I attended her interview, I literally got choked up just walking on the campus. So many amazing memories came back to me like it was yesterday. It’s so exciting for our family!” Karly is looking forward to the drama and theater opportunities at Maryknoll. She currently takes gymnastics at Hawaiian Island Twisters and has cheered for the Pop Warner Football League. “The Nobrega Family is a true example of the Maryknoll community,” said Shana Tong, Maryknoll vice president of academic affairs. “The legacy of this family represents generations of Maryknollers who embrace the Maryknoll spirit. It is a tribute to what makes Maryknoll special. Families like this bring to mind our alma mater, “To you our loyal hearts we bring Maryknoll, our Maryknoll Thy fame shall through the ages ring Maryknoll, our Maryknoll.” We are grateful for families who continue the Maryknoll legacy through their loyalty. The Maryknoll spirit is alive and well!”
