Mayor-President Holden Partners with C.A.R.E. Network At the recent dedication of the C.A.R.E. Network’s Early Bird – the only mobile medical clinic in the area dedicated exclusively to comprehensive cancer screenings – East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Melvin “Kip” Holden shared his passionate belief in the importance of early detection. Holden also announced his participation in the United States Conference of Mayors’ Cancer Awareness Program. To kick off this exciting initiative, the Office of the Mayor partnered with the C.A.R.E. Network during March, for National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month – the first of many monthly cancer awareness initiatives the Mayor and the C.A.R.E. Network will be working on together throughout the year. Advocate staff writer George Morris recently interviewed the Mayor about this partnership for an article entitled “Holden supports cancer awareness program.” A condensed version follows:

Several years before he was elected Baton Rouge’s Mayor, Kip Holden noticed something amiss when he saw his brother, Larry, at a reception. “He was a little off-balance. He almost missed his seat,” Holden said. “I asked, ‘Is something wrong with you?’ And he said, ‘I’m all right.’ I said, ‘You really need to go and get checked by a doctor to make sure you’re all right.’” Tests produced bad news — Holden’s brother had colon cancer that had spread to his liver. He died about six months later in July 1996. “I’m firmly convinced that had he been screened earlier, for the most part I feel he would be alive today,” Holden said. “At least he would not have died of colon cancer.” Unable to have avoided that tragedy, Holden would like to prevent more like it. So, when he decided to participate in the United States Conference of Mayors’ Cancer Awareness Program, he put his own spin on it. This year’s emphasis begins this month with colorectal cancer, and the campaign will have a different focus each month. “Colon cancer is the second most common cancer overall and third most common both in men and women

nationally and statewide,” said Lori McCallum, executive director of the Mary Bird Perkins C.A.R.E. Network. “When colorectal cancers are detected at an early, localized stage, the (five-year) survival rate is 90 percent,” McCallum said. “The tragedy is that so many ... ...Continued on page 6

Community Giving Sets Record During 2005 Annual Giving Campaign Philanthropic Support Overwhelming in Response to Center’s Mission, Treatment of Hurricane-Displaced Cancer Patients In a year that will long be remembered for the devastation caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, community donors were exceptionally generous and made gifts totaling $962,213.81 to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center during the Center’s 2005 Annual Giving Campaign. The amount includes philanthropic gifts from 100% of the Center employees who make financial gifts to directly benefit the patients. Philanthropic giving for 2005 totaled over $1.6 million.

“When hurricane evacuees arrived at Mary Bird Perkins’ door, the Center remained true to its mission to provide quality radiation cancer care for everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Capital City First-Time Host to Scientific Conference LSU and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Host Spring Meeting of AAPM Louisiana State University (LSU) and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center (MBPCC) recently hosted the Southwest Chapter Spring Meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). “The meeting was a huge success,” said Dr. Kenneth Hogstrom, MBPCC’s chief of physics, professor and director of LSU’s Medical Physics and Health Physics Program. “Of particular note,” he added, “Mary Bird Perkins medical physics student, Michael Ashenafi, received first place in the Young Investigators Symposium.” The purpose of the meeting was for regional medical physicists to receive continuing clinical education, to discuss professional issues and to be aware of ongoing research in medical physics.

Acclaimed Medical Physicist Joins Center Dr. Isaac Rosen is the most recent medical physicist to join the staff at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, bringing the total number of medical physicists to ten. Dr. Rosen, an accomplished educator and researcher, has 32 years of medical physics experience and has published over 75 scientific articles in radiation therapy. For the past 12 years he was Professor of Radiation Physics at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and presently holds an appointment as Professor Emeritus. Dr. Rosen’s hire brings additional expertise in IMRT and radiation physics, having led the clinical development efforts in IMRT at M. D. Anderson. The combined size and expertise of the Center’s team of ten medical physicists, six medical dosimetrists and six radiation oncologists are unique to Mary Bird Perkins and cannot be found elsewhere in Louisiana.

My Perspective This year marks Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s 35th anniversary of service to the communities it serves – 1.4 million residents throughout southeast Louisiana and beyond. The Center remains the only independent, community-owned, nonprofit cancer treatment, education and research system in the state providing its services for everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Thank you to the many individuals, businesses, foundations and groups for the important role you play in allowing Mary Bird Perkins to lead the fight against cancer in Louisiana. A special thank you to the 2005 Annual Giving Campaign volunteers, and the exceptionally generous donors, who together raised over $962,000 -- a new annual giving campaign record for the Center. 2005 will be remembered as the year Hurricanes Katrina and Rita caused the nation’s worst national disaster and a healthcare crisis unprecedented in American history. Community support and hardworking staff enabled the Center to serve as a resource for hundreds of cancer patients in need of help, assistance and resources. The year 2005 also saw Mary Bird Perkins’ arsenal of treatment technology grow with the addition of TomoTherapy and the Center’s innovative academic and research partnership with Louisiana State University. This unique partnership and the combined size and expertise of the Center’s team of six radiation oncologists, ten medical physicists and 50+ member staff of nurses, radiation therapists and other healthcare professionals provide the backbone for one of the most advanced cancer treatment programs in the United States. The early detection efforts of the C.A.R.E. Network have been greatly enhanced by the recent acquisition of the Early Bird, the only mobile medical clinic in the area dedicated exclusively to comprehensive cancer screenings. East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Melvin “Kip” Holden recognized the importance of early detection. He also inaugurated his participation in the United States Conference of Mayors’ Cancer Awareness Program by partnering with MBPCC during March, National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month – the first of many monthly cancer awareness initiatives the Mayor and the C.A.R.E. Network will be working on together. Helping to fund the C.A.R.E. Network’s mission are the Center’s premier fundraising events, such as the upcoming Sprint Open presented by All Star Automotive Group and LEMIC Insurance Company on April 27-30. Proceeds from the Sprint Open go directly to the patient services and community outreach programs that make up the C.A.R.E. Network. The Sprint Open is Baton Rouge’s only professional golf tournament. This is the 4th consecutive year the Tight Lies Tour is making a stop in Louisiana’s Capital City. Attorney General Foti Presents $100K to C.A.R.E. Network

“This year has been difficult for our state,” began Louisiana Attorney General Charles C. Foti Jr., a New Orleans native, addressing those assembled for his presentation to the C.A.R.E. Network in mid-December. “I’m here today to say that like hurricanes, if you evacuate early you’re better off. If you get checked for cancer early, you can avoid major problems.” And with that, Foti presented Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center with a check for $100,000 for early detection from the Office of the Attorney General. “We are grateful for this incredibly generous gift,” said Todd Stevens, president and CEO, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. “This will enable us to expand our program and offer more free cancer screenings to people in southeast Louisiana.”

Foti explained to those assembled that a lot of thought went into deciding where the money would have the biggest impact in the fight against cancer. “Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is renowned for its dedication to early detection,” he said. “We looked at the area serviced by the Center and wanted to partner in the early detection effort. We have the money and Mary Bird Perkins has the talent.” Robert S. Greer Jr., chairman, Board of Directors, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, thanked the Attorney General and his staff on behalf of the Center’s Board of Directors, its staff and the community. “Thank you for helping in the campaign for early detection as we fight against this terrible disease,” Greer said. The $100,000 gift is a result of a $55 million settlement in a class action lawsuit entered into by all 50 states against Bristol-Myers Squibb involving the cancer-fighting drug Taxol. Louisiana received a small portion of that settlement, and the Attorney General’s office is charged with distributing the funds.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s C.A.R.E. Network is working to expand cancer screening, prevention and control efforts in Hammond and Covington by co-hosting Genetic Cancer Risk Assessment and Counseling clinics. To do so, the Network has partnered with North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond and St. Tammany Parish Hospital and Hematology & Oncology Specialists Foundation in Covington. This innovative service provides confidential genetic counseling and screening services – at no cost – to individuals at risk for hereditary cancers such as breast, ovarian, colorectal and endometrial. The clinics are staffed by geneticist Duane Superneau, M.D., medical director of the Genetic Services of Louisiana who: • Addresses concerns about personal risk of developing cancer • Conducts a detailed risk assessment of personal or family risk • Ensures the individual’s understanding of screening options for early detection and ways to reduce personal cancer risk through lifestyle modification • Provides information to help individuals make informed decisions about medical management options, including the need for genetic testing if clinically indicated Although most cancers are not inherited, some families may have gene defects that increase their risk not only for the cancers listed above, but numerous others as well. In addition, men and women who carry one of these gene defects have a one in two (50/50) chance of passing it on to their children. Minority Cancer Awareness Coalition Offers Town Talk and Breast, Colorectal and Prostate Cancer Screenings National Minority Cancer Awareness Week to be Held April 16-22, 2006 in Baton Rouge The C.A.R.E. Network has partnered with other organizations in observance of Cancer Awareness Week for African-Americans. Recognized in April as part of National Minority Cancer Awareness Week, the program entitled “Let’s Talk About It” begins with cancer presentations at senior centers, continues with a town talk for the general public and concludes with free breast, colorectal and prostate cancer screenings. It is not as widely embraced and promoted like breast cancer is, for example.” The March campaign included distributing colorectal cancer screening tests in Baton Rouge and surrounding parishes. Participants drop a piece of tissue into the toilet after three consecutive bowel movements. A color change in the tissue indicates blood in the stool. In addition to producing public service announcements to heighten awareness, Holden promised Mary Bird Perkins that he would raise about $150,000 to help fund a second mobile medical clinic. The first such clinic, called the Early Bird, was dedicated on January 31, and Holden made his announcement at that ceremony. The mobile units cost about $300,000. “I’m going to raise at least half and maybe more toward getting a second unit,” Holden said. “Now there are a number of people who don’t have the means to get by the hospital to get tested. Now you can actually take the test to them all around the community. That is going to make a difference in the quality of life for many citizens in East Baton Rouge Parish.” The prospect of having another excites McCallum, especially since his pledge was unexpected. “It was totally a surprise out of the clear blue,” McCallum said. “So, we were delighted and so pleased at his commitment to the health and wellbeing of the people in the community.” The C.A.R.E. Network’s Early Bird, recently dedicated and now providing community cancer screenings, was funded by grants from ExxonMobil Baton Rouge, The Charles M. and Mary D. Grant Foundation and The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as requested by Congressman Richard Baker and Senator Mary Landrieu.

Fighting Cancer on the Road C.A.R.E. Network Gets Wheels The C.A.R.E. Network, intent upon providing increased screening services to the medically underserved and ultimately lowering cancer mortality rates in its service area and beyond, now has the only mobile medical clinic in the area dedicated to comprehensive community cancer screenings. The clinic on wheels, named the Early Bird in reference to its mission of early detection, will expand free screenings directly into rural, remote communities that need them most. The Early Bird will hold in excess of 100 screenings this year, reaching approximately 4,000 people in the Center’s 15-parish service region. I want to help as many people as possible get the vital screening services they need,” said Holden. Commented Councilman Kelly, “We have a lot of folks in north Baton Rouge who can’t drive miles to a screening. This clinic is going to make a big difference in the north Baton Rouge community.” Senator Broome emphasized the importance of accessibility as a key ingredient for effective healthcare. “What this mobile clinic offers to members of our community is accessibility,” she said. “I’m convinced that the impact of the clinic will make a difference in so many lives.”

Tight Lies Tour Returns to Baton Rouge City’s Only Professional Golf Tournament Returns to Capital City for 4th Consecutive Year The Tight Lies Tour and Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center are excited to announce the upcoming 2006 Sprint Open presented by All Star Automotive Group and LEMIC Insurance Company. The tournament takes place April 27 30 at The University Club in Baton Rouge. The Sprint Open is Baton Rouge’s only professional golf tournament. The Tight Lies Tour will roll into town on Thursday, April 27th and will run through Sunday, April 30th. The 72-hole event carries a $120,000 purse with a first prize of $20,000. With 150 touring pros competing in each of 19 tournaments, the Tight Lies Tour represents one of the best development opportunities for golf professionals to improve their game and prepare for life on the PGA tour. Baton Rouge area local players and LSU veterans associated with the Tight Lies Tour include Billy Dressler, Stiles Mitchell, Alan Morgan and Perry Moss. The week’s festivities begin on Monday, April 24th with The Taste of Louisiana sponsored by The First Tee of Carville, Louisiana. Tight Lies Tour pro per team. The professional tournament starts Thursday and ends Sunday. The field will be cut on Friday at the conclusion of the second round. Baton Rouge is the 5th stop on the Tight Lies Tour this year. Admission to all four days of the pro tournament is free to the public. Also free to the public is the Baton Rouge Coca-Cola Junior Clinic featuring the top golf educator Chuck Winstead on Saturday, April 29th. Held at The University Club driving range at approximately 2 p.m., the clinic offers a chance for area kids ages 6-15 to get tips and instructions from professional golfers. The Mary Bird Perkins Golf Tournament has raised approximately $1.3 million over the last 16 years. Funds are re-invested in the community through the C.A.R.E. Network in the form of free cancer early detection screenings and prevention programs, professional and community education, clinical research and indigent patient care.

Medical Physics The Greater Baton Rouge Business Report featured a profile on the Center’s Chief of Physics Ken Hogstrom in the Intellectual Property section of one of their special publications. The article showcases the nationally competitive medical physics program developed by Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and Louisiana State University and how together they are working to improve cancer treatment technologies. Reprinted below is the profile from the “Capital Assets III: Our Community Capital” edition published February 2006. By day, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center uses advanced radiation therapy technology to treat patients with a variety of cancers. By night, the Center becomes a laboratory, as medical physics researchers who are part of a unique collaborative effort between MBPCC and LSU use “phantoms” rather than patients to search for better ways to employ existing technology to safely eliminate cancer. In 2004, Kenneth Hogstrom left M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston after 25 years to establish the LSU/MBPCC collaboration, one of approximately 20 medical physics graduate programs in the nation. “A medical physicist is an individual who applies the principles of medicine. In doing that, there are three modes: educator, researcher and clinician. Here, at Mary Bird, our activities are somewhat integrated,” says Hogstrom, who serves as chief of physics at Mary Bird and professor and director of the Medical Physics and Health Physics Program at LSU. In the course of preparing the master’s students who come into the program with bachelor’s degrees in engineering or physics to practice in the field, the program teaches the principles of medical physics and provides both clinical and research experience. At Mary Bird, the medical physics faculty has partnered with technology providers BrainLAB Inc. and TomoTherapy Inc. to pursue studies in image-guided therapy and a therapy that for some cancers could replace combined x-ray and electron beam therapy, respectively. At LSU, collaboration with Vanderbilt University and MXI Systems is researching a new area, x-ray capture therapy. At this stage, testing is not conducted on patients. “Here, we are trying to study how current technology can best be used in the clinical setting. When a company comes out with new technology, they haven’t explored all the ways it can be used. “We’re evaluating image-guided technology to see how accurately its radiation therapy can be delivered. For example, we know we can deliver radiation to a tumor with an accuracy of within three millimeters; we think we can get within one millimeter; but we’re not sure about a half a millimeter. Our research allows us to find out.” 10 Perkins Perspective

LSU and MBPCC have developed a nationally competitive medical physics program. The joint research and academic venture promises to deliver important biomedical research, improved treatments for patients and economic development opportunities for the community. Dr. Kenneth Hogstrom (pictured), one of the world’s foremost scholars in the area of medical physics, is leading the partnership. Besides running the data through different scenarios and calculations in the MBPCC laboratory, the team adapts equipment to explore its theories and builds phantom patients out of plastic or bone-line materials. The studies often take two years from design through completion. However, the benefits of melding the resources of private and public institutions to create a new benchmark for medical physics programs are already clear. “Typically, the stronger research programs in medical physics are based at a university cancer center,” Hogstrom explains. “Ours is a unique model, a collaboration between a freestanding cancer center and a university.”

Lee Killett Rayner Giving Back Matters Lee Rayner’s move from Texas back to Baton Rouge, to be closer to family, turned out to be an intuitive one. Her motherin-law was diagnosed with brain cancer and Rayner and her husband, Mark, were there to take her to her treatments at Mary Bird. “She always talked about how much she loved the picture of the hot air balloons in the ceiling,” said Rayner of her mother-in-law. “She’d say, ‘It’s a balloon day’ when she was going for a treatment. She felt so good about the people she encountered. There’s no way to put a price on the comfort she felt from the staff and volunteers. I couldn’t do anything for her, but they could.” During that same time, Rayner’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and Rayner was there for her as well. “Every time we entered through the front door, you could sense a special feeling. Mother was always impressed with that. So was I.” Ironically, when both women’s treatments were completed, the Center’s Office of Development called to ask Rayner if she would be interested in volunteering to help with the Calling for a Cure Online & On-Air Auction Web site before the pending 2005 event. “I do the Bengal Belles Web site. That’s how they found me,” she laughed. Rayner readily agreed to help the Development office. “There are ways that anyone can help Mary Bird – with time, talent or money. Before that phone call, I didn’t know which path I wanted to take. They decided for me,” she said with her trademark smile. At Rayner’s suggestion, a new software platform from CMarket was incorporated into the Web site to provide easier navigation as well as proxy bidding, a component allowing bidders to stipulate the highest amount they were willing to pay for an item. With that option, bidders did not even have to be in town to participate. This software took the online auction to a new and exciting level and all of the upgrades added to the huge success of the event.

“It’s important to me to have a sense of community and not work in a silo,” said Rayner. “Mary Bird Perkins is the marquis of cancer care in our community. We have to help take care of it.”

Community Support Groups, Events and Activities Cancer Survivor Support Group of Pointe Coupée Cancer survivors, family and friends gather to provide support, share experiences and discuss successful coping techniques. You are invited to an annual dutch treat luncheon on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at 10 a.m. at Tex-Mex Café in New Roads. Network at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. She will be speaking about how EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES…emphasizing cancer screening and featuring the Early Bird mobile medical clinic. Candlelighters This group is for children with cancer and their families. The program includes monthly fun activities in a supportive atmosphere, a summer day camp, annual holiday party, tutoring, as well as individual and/or family counseling. (Bereavement Support Groups) Free to the public, two eight-week workshops will be offered to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. This group, facilitated by Hospice of Baton Rouge’s Bereavement Coordinator and Chaplain, meet on Monday evenings or Tuesday mornings at the HBR office at 9063 Siegen Lane. The Hope Chests Organized by patients and facilitated by a nurse practitioner, this program’s purpose is to inform, encourage and meet the needs of breast cancer patients and their families. Speakers offer educational information on group-selected topics and emotional support is offered through group interaction and exercises that promote ventilation of feelings and fears. Look Good...Feel Better A program in which trained volunteer cosmetologists help female cancer patients deal with the side effects of treatment by teaching them beauty techniques to enhance their appearance and self-image. Lymphoma Support Group For patients with Hodgkin’s disease and nonHodgkin’s lymphoma, their families and friends, this support group meets at noon on the last Friday of every month at Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge. Man to Man Support Group This group offers education and mutual support for prostate cancer survivors as well as those currently undergoing treatment. Make Today Count: Baton Rouge, Lutcher, St. Francisville Chapters Through speakers, social gatherings, discussion of mutual concerns and sharing of information, Make Today Count offers support and education for cancer patients, family and friends. The Baton Rouge chapter meets at noon on the fourth Thursday of each month at Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge for a guest speaker’s presentation followed by a support group. The Lutcher chapter meets at 5 p.m. the first Thursday of the month at the Lutcher Library and the St. Francisville chapter meets at 2 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month at the St. Francisville Town Hall. New Voice Support Group This support group is designed to encourage and support those who have had a laryngectomy and to assist with physical, social and emotional rehabilitation. Ostomy Support Group This group assists with the rehabilitation of ostomy patients through information, educational material and emotional support. Reach to Recovery This patient visitation program is for women who have had breast surgery related to cancer. Visitors are trained volunteers who have recovered from similar surgery. Sisters Supporting Sisters A support group for African-American breast cancer survivors, this organization provides a strong support base and emotional safe-haven for survivors to express fears, frustrations and concerns.
