Bound together by our mutual passion for the fight against cancer, Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center serves the needs of more cancer patients than any program in Louisiana. Through our vision and support of the community, we are transforming cancer care by saving and extending the lives of cancer patients, right here at home.
Dear Friends,
I recently attended a meeting where everyone was asked to visualize their cancer patient and place them in the center of the room. Who are you fighting for? Who will you let guide your tough decisions and be your compass? I’ve never been in a more productive, emotional, motivating meeting in my five years as a Cancer Center team member.
For me, it was my grandfather who lost his personal battle in 2010. It was my aunt whose journey ended in 2011. It was a close family friend who lost her courageous fight in 2013 much too young.
Our hours are long; the challenges are great; the losses are painful. Their memories drive me to do more and to be better. I can think of no greater profession or anything I would rather be doing!
For everyone we’ve lost, so many more are surviving and thriving through their cancer journeys because of your generosity. Your commitment is helping save and extend the lives of so many who hear the words “you have cancer.” Your impact this past year was felt by more cancer patients than any other cancer center in the region; thank you.

IMPACT
2014:A YEAR TO REMEMBER
Last year, more than 3,000 new patients were treated, nearly 5,000 people were served through our outreach program and over 6,000 survivorship services were provided. In addition, research expanded with more than 60 open clinical trials, 25 active medical physics research projects and 14 papers published in peer-reviewed jour nals.

TOGETHER, WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE… IN PREVENTION The early detection program is saving lives by screening over 4,000 people for five types of cancer and making a remarkable impact on the health and wellness in our community. Because lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths in Louisiana, we established a Lung Cancer Screening Program. In 2014, the clinic was recognized as a screening Center of Excellence by the Lung Cancer Alliance. Through your dedication and support, we are able to diagnose cancer in its earliest stages.
IN RESEARCH As a recipient of the NCORP Grant, in collaboration with LSU-New Orleans and LSU Health Sciences CenterShreveport, Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center will bring more clinical trials to the Gulf South region. The cancer collaborative was awarded $5.6 million over five years, which will make a significant impact on cancer-related health disparities. Together, with dedication and resolve, we will continue to fight cancer through translational research.

IN SURVIVORSHIP The Cancer Center introduced integrative medicine through our new Mind-Body Together Support Group for cancer survivors. The Healing Art Therapy program was introduced to our patients with great success. Donors made patient navigation available to every patient at the Cancer Center. Our award-winning Palliative Care Program opened an outpatient clinic, offering patients invaluable year-round support. Because of you, we are able to surround our patients with more support services than any other cancer care program in Louisiana.
IN INNOVATION The Cancer Center is the first facility in the region to offer the Elekta Versa HD Radiotherapy System, a pioneering cancer-fighting technology that is setting new standards for speed and precision. Our Medical Physics team has developed innovative ways of utilizing this technology that have improved the quality of treatment for our patients and attracted interest from radiation therapy clinics around the world. Your support allows us to invest in technology and research that improves the care of patients throughout the region and beyond.
IN TEAMWORK Our Multidisciplinary Care Teams are composed of experts in cancers that affect our community the most — colorectal, head and neck, lung and skin. Each patient at the Cancer Center receives specialized, personalized cancer care, right here at home. Your gifts are bringing advanced care through expert oncology teams to our community.
IN PATIENT ASSISTANCE Patient support includes transportation assistance, nutritional supplements and supportive care for patients, caregivers and their families. It’s the work that moves the fight forward. For Megan and many others, clinical research has played a critical role in making effective treatments available to target cancers and save lives. A clinical trial may be the best way for patients to receive the most advanced treatment, allowing access to new drugs before they are widely available. Clinical trials give patients an opportunity to not only take an active role in their own treatment but also the chance to make a difference in the lives of future generations. For over a decade, Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center’s clinical research team has recruited patients for groundbreaking clinical trials. Our program has been recognized as a leading community research program through participation in several National Cancer Institute initiatives. Today, the Cancer Center offers robust inpatient and outpatient cancer care, comprehensive and innovative in scope. But with your support, there is even more we can do to fully integrate and enhance services, making the Cancer Center a place where patients from across the Gulf South region can receive care on par with the most respected and well-known academic cancer centers. THE CELEBRATION BELL Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center’s celebration bell gives cancer survivors a meaningful way to celebrate and share their progress. The “ringing of the bell” marks a significant moment — a point in time signaling the end of active treatment and the beginning of the next phase of their journey. Partners of Hope, our employee giving program, purchased the Cancer Center’s celebration bell as a symbol of their investment and commitment to providing support not only for our patients to survive, but thrive. The now nationwide tradition was first introduced in 1996 at Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center when U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Irve Le Moyne, a patient with head and neck cancer, installed a brass bell at the center’s radiation treatment facility, inscribed with the following lines:
