STRUCTURE AND TECTONICS

THE FOLLOWING MODEL PHOTOS SHOWCASE MY EXPLORATION OF STRUCTURAL TECTONICS IN STEEL CONSTRUCTION. THIS STUDY FOCUSES ON INTEGRATING FUNCTIONALITY AND AESTHETICS, WHERE THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OF A BUILDING ARE DESIGNED NOT ONLY TO PROVIDE STABILITY AND SUPPORT BUT ALSO TO EXPRESS MATERIALITY, CRAFTSMANSHIP, AND VISUAL APPEAL. THIS APPROACH HIGHLIGHTS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A BUILDING’S STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY (HOW IT STANDS) AND ITS DESIGN LANGUAGE (HOW IT COMMUNICATES), RESULTING IN SPACES THAT ARE BOTH FUNCTIONAL AND VISUALLY EXPRESSIVE

STRUCTURE AND TECTONICS

THE BRIDGE SPANS 60 FEET WITH AN UPPER STEEL-CHORD STRUCTURE AND STEEL BEAMS FOR SECONDARY SUPPORT. DESIGNED WITHOUT COLUMNS TO ALLOW PASSAGE, ITS CRESCENT SHAPE IS BOTH A FUNCTIONAL AND AESTHETIC RESPONSE TO ITS SURROUNDINGS. THE GRADUAL SLOPE OF THE BRIDGE SEAMLESSLY BLENDS INTO THE LANDING, CREATING A SMOOTH TRANSITION.

ROTUNDA ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL

THE ROUDNA ARCHITECTURAL SCHOOL IN POMNA STANDS OUT WITH ITS ROUND CYLINDRICAL FAÇADE CRAFTED FROM PREFAB CONCRETE PANELS AND FROSTED GLASS BLOCK INSERTS, OFFERING A DISTINCTIVE LANDMARK IN THE CITYSCAPE. COMPLEMENTING THIS DESIGN ARE MODULAR BLOCKS MADE FROM PATINA-FRAMED WALLS, CREATING A PIXELATED FACADE THAT ADDS VISUAL COMPLEXITY AND FLEXIBILITY TO THE STRUCTURE. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN INFLUENCES ARE EVIDENT IN THE OPEN-AIR PLINTH AND LOBBY SPACES, BLURRING THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN INDOORS AND OUTDOORS TO EMBRACE THE REGION’S CLIMATE AND LIFESTYLE. THE DESIGN WAS DERIVED FROM PROCESS-DRIVEN PROGRAMMATIC VISUALIZATION, AIMING TO CREATE ENGAGING FAÇADES THAT ENHANCE THE BUILDING’S OVERALL EXPRESSION.

5. STUDIO FLOOR PLAN

BOTH STRUCTURES LEVERAGE LIGHT AND SHADOW PLAY TO EVOKE DRAMA AND INTRIGUE, WHILE INCORPORATING NATURAL ELEMENTS LIKE WOODEN SCREENS AND VINES TO SOFTEN THEIR CONCRETE EXTERIORS. THE ROUDNA SCHOOL STANDS AS A TESTAMENT TO THE EVOLUTION OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, MARRYING TRADITION WITH INNOVATION TO CREATE A DYNAMIC AND MEMORABLE ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION 1. GROUND FLOOR PLAN

KEY AREAS LIKE CLASSROOMS AND STUDIOS ARE STRATEGICALLY ENCLOSED FOR PRIVACY, WHILE THE TOWER’S PINWHEEL FLOOR PLAN FOSTERS CONNECTIVITY AND COLLABORATION AMONG STUDENTS AND FACULTY. THIS LAYOUT, WITH SPACES OPENING BOTH ABOVE AND BELOW, PROMOTES VISUAL CONTINUITY AND INTERACTION THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. IN MANY WAYS, THE DESIGN PHILOSOPHY OF THE ROUDNA SCHOOL MIRRORS THAT OF THE TORRE BLANCAS IN MADRID, BLENDING ORGANIC FORMS WITH MODERNIST PRINCIPLES TO CREATE VISUALLY STRIKING YET FUNCTIONAL SPACES.

FROM VISION TO FACADE

THE PROCESS BEGINS WITH ESTABLISHING A NON-LINEAR GRID TO CREATE A SHARED VISUAL LANGUAGE BETWEEN WINDOW OPENINGS. AI GENERATION (GEMINI + CHATGPT) WAS THEN USED TO DEVELOP CONCEPTUAL IMAGERY THAT INFORMED AND INSPIRED NEW FORMAL DIRECTIONS. THESE VISUALS WERE PROCESSED THROUGH 3D GAUSSIAN SPLATTING AND MESHING IN COMFYUI TO EXTRACT GEOMETRY AND SPATIAL DEPTH. THE RESULTING FORMS WERE REFINED AND MORPHED THROUGH HUMAN INTERVENTION TO ARTICULATE THE FINAL DESIGN INTENT. ULTIMATELY, THE OUTCOMES WERE EMBEDDED INTO THE FAÇADE GRID, FORMING A FIVE-PART PRECAST CONCRETE SYSTEM THAT BALANCES PATTERN DISRUPTION WITH VISUAL CONTINUITY.

-04 MT WILSON RESARCH RETREAT

SET WITHIN THE MOUNT WILSON OBSERVATORY, THE PROJECT AIMS TO CREATE A HARMONIOUS SPACE FOR PUBLIC LECTURES, RESEARCH, AND ACCOMMODATIONS FOR ASTROPHYSICAL SCIENTISTS. INSPIRED BY THE FORMAL TRIANGULAR SHAPES SEEN IN THE WORKS OF LOUIS KAHN, THE DESIGN BLENDS ARCHITECTURAL PRECISION WITH THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE. CANTILEVERED STRUCTURES EXTEND OVER THE MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN, PROVIDING BOTH STRIKING VISUAL APPEAL AND FUNCTIONAL SPACES. THE PROJECT IS ALSO DESIGNED AS A RETREAT FOR SCIENTISTS, OFFERING A TRANQUIL ENVIRONMENT WHERE THEY CAN ENJOY THE SOLITUDE OF THE MOUNTAINS WHILE ENGAGING IN FOCUSED WORK. IT FOSTERS CONNECTION, INSPIRATION, AND THOUGHTFUL INTERACTION WITH THE COSMOS IN A SERENE AND IMMERSIVE SETTING.

GARDEN FOR THE BODY AND SOUL

THE SHINRINYOKU PROJECT REIMAGINES PASSIVE TRANSITIONAL SPACES AS PRODUCTIVE ENVIRONMENTS THAT SUPPORT BOTH MENTAL AND PHYSICAL WELL-BEING. ITS MAIN GOAL IS TO TRANSFORM UNDERUTILIZED AREAS ON THE SCHOOL CAMPUS INTO URBAN FARMS, INTEGRATING THE FARM-TO-TABLE CONCEPT WITHIN A DENSE URBAN SETTING TO PROMOTE HEALTHIER EATING HABITS AMONG STUDENTS.

THE DESIGN APPROACH PRESERVES KEY ELEMENTS FROM THE PREVIOUS SCHEME WHILE INTRODUCING ORGANIC ADDITIONS THAT COMPLEMENT THE SITE. THE PROGRAM IS THOUGHTFULLY DISTRIBUTED ACROSS VARIOUS ELEVATIONS TO CREATE PASSIVE GATHERING SPACES FOR STUDENTS, ALONGSIDE AREAS DEDICATED TO URBAN FARMING AND OTHER FUNCTIONS. THE DISTINCTIVE TOPOGRAPHY REFLECTS THE SITE’S HISTORY AS A GRANITE QUARRY THAT WAS LATER TRANSFORMED INTO A LAKE. WATER FEATURES AND ELEVATION CHANGES IN THE DESIGN STRENGTHEN THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE SCHOOL AND THE NEARBY RESERVOIR.
