Teatro La Plaza’s Hamlet

Don’t miss your chance to see the only Scottish dates in 2025 for this contemporary and powerful adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic, Hamlet.

This, along with our International Season, are part of our commitment to bring culturally important events from around the world to Aberdeen. Following a smash hit, sold out run at the Edinburgh International Festival last year, His Majesty’s Theatre will be one of only three UK dates for 2025.

The production has travelled the world since 2019 taking in some of the most prestigious venues including the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in Illinois, the Lincoln Center in New York, Barbican Centre in London and many more.

So far in 2025…

Where it all Began

During a meeting, theatre usher Jaime Cruz announced to Teatro La Plaza director Chela De Ferrari his desire to act. Cruz, like almost every actor in Peruvian theatrecompany Teatro La Plaza's Hamlet, has Down syndrome. He is Hamletbut so are allthe otherseven actors at various stages ofthe play.

Chela De Ferrari: "I imagined those iconic words, 'To be ornotto be', spokenby someone whose very rightto be in public, artistic, and professionalspaces is sooftenquestioned. It changed everything whatifthisrolewasn't meantto be held by one iconic actor, butratherto be shared - to become a collective voice?"

Fromthat conversation, De Ferrari pictured him wearingthe Prince'scrown andwrotethe retelling of Shakespeare'sclassic.
