CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOLYOUNG LAMAR HALL

Centennial High School is going through a campus wide re-development, as well as the addition of a new program, the CT Building, which will be holding technical classes available for the community. The purpose of the project is to provide a safe, upgraded and dignified eating and leisure space for students, staff, and community members.

While taking into consideration the need for social development and connection, the space also gives an opportunity for new programs to be held in a well-lit space that also provides privacy to a public space.
Centennial High School is located in the intersection between West El Segundo Boulevard and North Central Avenue. These streets are heavely transited in a daily basis, with other smaller streets in the surroundings.
The surroundings of the site are composed of multiple single-family and apartment complexes (light pink), and a commercial area north from Centennial High School (red). The site has two bus stops with two different routes used by students and community.

The original arrangement of the campus is composed of multi ple classrooms that were only meant to be temporal but became permanent. When making the new layout, firts it was de cided where the new buidlings were going to be at.

vacy level of the building was considered for the new layout of the campus, and then the shape of the building was explored.

Base of the Pattern
Line Organization
In order to obtain the lines for the facade pattern, the album Compton by Dr Dre was used. By connecting certain object such as the city sign letters, the buildings or helicopters, the lines were created. To pick the angle in which the lines are going to be organized, the pattern was rotated 90 degrees from its original point.

Pattern Arrangement

To pick the angle in which the lines are going to be organized, the pattern was rotated 90 degrees from its original point
The lines then were slightly adjusted to a desired angle, and then placed in a spaces of 6’’x14’’ to be arranged one more time
Pattern Arrangement
Three different lines were places in a 6’x14’ frame, in which they were rearranged in different directions to create the skin pattern. The scale would be increased in size for the North and West facade of the building for light access, and remain in its original size for the South and West facade.
Final Adjustments
Once the final arrangement was created, it was reflected horizontally, to then be cut by lines that are also from the Line Organization, creating a pattern within a pattern. Lines dividing the final pattern would be used as frames for the North and West facade to allow more light inside of the building

The purpose of the project is to develop a variety of models to explore space and its distribution with digital to physical models, the development of detail drawings, and the exploration of a facade. Located in an existing project in San Diego, California, the E-Building was designed under the idea of keeping the current business that exists in the site, Dave’s Flowershop, while creating an apartment complex above. Thirty-six units need to be arranged within the space provided, as welll as Egress access.
The model was then explored in a two dimensional aspect to now see possible location of egress access of the project.
The core solids consist on everything that reached the ground level and the roof, while the projections are spaces that do not have connection to the ground level or roof, but are part of the building.
The last part to explore was the structure, where the corners of the core solid would later guide the placement of structural columns.

PROJECTIONS
The next step was to create the skin of the building with the arrangement of lines. Flat lines in paper then had to be extruded in a 3D model to see its shape and behavior with the sun and the building.

ENCANTO MUSEUM OF ART

The project focused on the revitalization of the Encanto cultural corridor by creating inspiring and welcoming spaces for the community. There is an combination of private and public spaces that will be available for small and big events of the community, developing spaces for cultural and social exchange. The project’s design is intended to take advantage of the light from site’s location, as well as from the accesibility to the project from public transportation located close to Imperial Avenue.

The Encanto area has a huge artistic presence within its walls, reflecting the beauty of the cultural identity of the neighborhood. In contrast, the sidewalks do not have enough space for pedestrians, and are in a poor state and without enough street lights.
The sidewalk is planned to be re-designed into a wider space where pedestrians have more space, as well as bicycle users.

The project is to be located in a hill in the neighborhood, which creates a challenge in whether to get rid of the hill or to keep most of the hill. In order to keep the majority of the current trees and plants on site, while adding tall windows and glass ceilings to allow light to get in the first level of the museum.

There will be a small amphitheater in the east side for people to gather outside of the museum.

AVANZANDO SAN YSIDRO-
COTTONWOOD PROJECT

The multi-family project will hold a hundred and three units, affordable for residents of the San Ysidro neighborhood. As part of an initiative to reduce the impact of the hosuing crisis in San Diego, in the future, tenants will have the opportunity to own the units they rent.

The work seen in this section was done with Yellow Giraffe Architects as an Architectural Intern. Some of the things I did in the project was doing renders for presentations, reviewing documentation drawings, and presenting the project to the community of San Ysidro.

The elements that were going to be added to the first renders were picked by the community during multiple meetings, surveys and activities. The main focus was to create units that will include a piece of Mexico in the units for a heavily impacted immigrant community.

Renders were made for the client to see the progress of the project, as well as to show to engineers and collaborators of the team.
