One ofthe best features here atCentral isthe diversity among the students and staff. Having a student:teacher relationship isan important part of learning. Students put alotoftime into activities but __ they also make sure their academics come first. _ Students challenge themselves bytaking Accelerated, and AP Courses to help prepare themselves for after high school. Students also participate inmany after school academic clubs. Students are always encouraged to seek out new opportunities to help prepare themselves forthe next step.

Day 2was Tie-Dye Tuesday and students dressed up with alltheir different patterned tie-dye. On Wednesday, day 3,the annual Character Day, also known as infamous Squad Day, is day where all students get to dress up astheir favorite character and /or TV show. Jersey Day Thursday is day where all students are able to show offtheir favorite sports teams. The week ended inaday where everyone wore their class color shirt. Seniors wore maroon, juniors wore black, sophomores wore gray and freshmen wore white.

n the day of the annual homecoming game, all of the students at Central gathered in Combes Gym to show off their school pride at the much anticipated pep rally. This rally energized the students at Central by displaying fun performances by the football team, the homecoming court, the cheer team, the dance team, and games played by fellow students. This spectacle of spirit prompted a great turnout for the football game later that night.

Several weekends are devoted toworking on improving the girls’football skillswith the junior and senior football players. The Powder Puffgame takes place atMcKinley Field, the practice field ofthe Maroons. This year the class of2018 and 2019 competed for the victory. The game came down to the last play, and the seniors came out on top with agreat effortfrom both teams.

hefinal event raising excitement for the annual Homecoming dance isthe Homecoming football game. Inthis game, the Central Maroons varsity football team faced Peoria Notre Dame. That Friday afternoon atthe field, Central Students assembled to get excited forthisgame. Inthe end the Maroons unfortunately lostto Peoria 54-14. Despite the loss, school spiritwas upheld and the game was exciting.

omecoming 2017 ended with Central's exciting spiritweek and pep rally. On the night ofOctober 7th, Central High School had their annual homecoming dance. The dance took place from 7-10 pm in Combes Gym and was decorated with agold and black starred back drop, for the theme 50's drive-in. Students were able to bring dates oftheir choice from different schools. Itwas a wonderful night for the incoming freshman to attend their first high school dance and for the senior graduating class of2018 to spend their night with friends. Itwas anight to remember for avery long time.

he 2017 Homecoming court is chosen by the student body by writingnamesonaballot,whichlater iscounted,todeterminetheattendant for each grade while the whole school votes for the seniors for King and Queen. All of the court is announced at the Homecoming Pep Rally and all have the privilege to be in the Homecoming Parade. The parade is a one mile loop around the neighborhood of Central High School where students and community gather towatch theMarching Maroons and see the floatsthat display the clubs and organizations the students are part of. Later that night court is escorted during halftime at the Homecoming Football Game and the King and Queen are crowned.

T he 2017-2018 school year was a year full of endless

possibilities to see many new films. It started with the release of wonderful films such as the action packed Kingsman: The Gold Circle. Older films were expanded on with ' the release of Blade Runner 2049 and Stephen King’s /t. Later, near the holidays, the much-anticipated Star Wars: The Last Jedi was finally released, and was a galactic spectacle for many fans. At the beginning of 2018, the powerful Marvel film Black Panther was released, followed by the spring releases of X-Men: The New Mutants, and A Wrinkle in Time. The school year came to an end with the exciting Avengers: Infinity War and Solo: A Star Wars Story. There could not have been a better year to have nostalgic sagas be continued or expanded upon. b.

Anika Phillips has consecutively been in the News-Gazette for her award winning artwork atthe Eric Show. Her art has been presented with the best in show out of190 high school students’ artwork.

AAPID is National African American Parent Involvement Day. NAAPID is a day at Central on Monday, February 12th where parents come to get involved in the activities students do at school and spend time with them. This is a day where African Americans can express their feelings, knowledge, and experiences. In this program a series of skits were performed on Africa to America, and how African Americans were sold into slavery, and how they longed for freedom. They also did a skit on the invisible chains having to do with Jim Crow, and a Black Panther skit as a cry for justice. Lastly, they talked about our first black president, and the education and ft salute to the fraternities and sororities.

Playing asport at Central opens up many new possibilities for Central students. Girls' Track had a successful season, although they did not have anyone qualify for state. The team had more than 350 personal records and had 57 performances on various top ten lists. Senior Trinity Brown made the All-Sectional team. Senior Hope Llewellyn made the Outdoor All-Big 12 team. Chanice Willis, Adrienne Squier, Trinity Brown, April Gaona, Chikako Barnes, Jeeyoon Chun, Faith Llewellyn, Hope Llewellyn, Kendall Woods, and jillian Devine all made the Indoor All-Big 12 team. Boys' Track had an eventful season, including a state champion in the high jump. The Maroons will have many returning athletes next year which will help the team quality for more events in state. Senior Nick Jackson placed first in the high jump at state as well as being honored for All-State, All-Conference and News Gazette All Area. Devin Edwards, Noah Brunson, John Smith and Alex Stack made the All Conference team. Ben Schultz and John Miller made the All-Conference and News Gazette All-Area team.

7: he 2017 softball season was another year ofrebuilding. With

4ofour top seniors, Dallas Caldwell, Kamryn Pettigrew, Olivia Watts, and Panayiota Laros, freshmen AshleyShortridge, Casey Brown and Alexandria Williams had to bring theirAgame. The Lady Maroons had arecord of8wins and 19 losses but that did not define them. Keeping agood and positive attitude throughout the season showed in result to many ofclose games including Shiloh and Decatur Macarthur. In many games, the girlsfought hard throughout the 7innings and were able to deliver some wins but faced some tough losses. On Tuesday, May 16th both Central and Centennial had a#LiveLikeLuke game in honor ofLuke IMiller and hisfamily. The Lady Maroons came out with awin, but no matter the outcome, allthe girlsdid itfor one reason, The Miller family. This year, the team hopes to channel the same energy and attitude from the past years. The 2017-2018 season will be another great season in many ways.

mproving over last season the Central Maroons girls’ varsity soccer team worked hard as a team over the course of the 2016-17 season. The girls had a rough start to their season due to 3 games being canceled

o get focused because they were going to be playi competitors. The girls tied their game against Peoria Richwood and won against Mattoon 8-0. Coming up was the rivalry game against Centennial which ended with the Maroons being shutout 0-7 but they came back with respectable win over Urbana 7-0. The girls lost to Normal University but were able to end the week with a win over Urbana University 2-0. Continuing the Winning streak the girls were able to beat Bloomington High School giving hem the confidence they needed to play Peoria Notre Dame and Normal] Community but unfortunately the Lady Maroons were defeated by both. This year the team participated in the STM Invite. They placed 2nd despite playing} hrough frigid temperatures winning against STM and Danville. Playing against Danville for the second time the Lady Maroons were able to defeat them again 5-0. After losing their next game to Mahomet, the girls were able to redeem hemselves by winning big over Peoria High School and to celebrate their win by going to Chick-fil-A for dinner. Hosting the last regular season game the irls played Normal West and lost 6-1. Going right into post season the girls played Mattoon winning 6-1, which led them to the regional final play against Mahomet but after putting up a good fight they lost 0-4—+#e team’s accomplishments were not over looked. Naomi Dupree, Grace Redden, Payton Thompson were on the All- Sectional team and also the girl's coach, Steve Whiteley, was the Coach of the Year through IHSSCA section 5. The Girls’ Golf team looked to have another strong year with State as the one goal in mind. Two girls from the team accomplished this, senior Mia Hayasaki, and sophomore Mackenzie McCoy both fought their way to the State ournament. The team as a whole got to Sectionals where they placed 7th after placing 2nd in their Regional both for the 2A Class. They did have their best duo record with 13 wins and only 3 losses. Individually senior Mia Hayasaki placed 7th at the Sectional and won All-Conference, sophomore Mackenzie McCoy placed Sth at the sectional and was also named AllConference.

The boys started off the season with one goal in mind, return o State, which they accomplished after winning the Class 2A Regional and Sectional. That isthe 2nd most players the team has had inthe last18years. The team finished with arecord ofthree wins and seven losses. Afterthe2016seasontheteamlosteightseniors,which accounted for halfofthe varsity team. The varsity team is fre losing two seniors thisyear, so the future islooking bright for the young team. Despite a losing record, the eam finished 5th in the Big 12 and 3rd in Sectionals. They also had two doubles teams qualify for state. During the season, the coaches were focused on trying to create agood team culture and chemistry between the players. They placed firstatthe Mahomet Bulldogs invite, with junior Rylee Hinton and reshman Mira Chopra making the All-Tournament Team. To go along with theirfirstplace finish, the team also beat Mahomet intwo sets to win regionals. Unfortunately the Maroons lostto Manteno inthe sectional semi final. Illini commit Rylee Hinton made the Big 12All-Conference tea ae senior Brittany Anglin, junior Rachel Hurt, an Feshriih Mira Chopra got an honorable mention. Led by team captains John Miller and John Smith, the team had to start from scratch after losing one of their top runners to injury and the other to another sport. The underclassmen within the team did everything that was asked of them and performed well. A: One year Coach Hood could not come and instead of doing mile repeats we rolled down the hills and reported our slowest times.

While the team did not make itto Sectionals they still had a great year of success and development within the program. The overwhelming majority ofgirls finished the season faster than what they started. The new freshman and student-athletes blended into the program remarkably well and demonstrated phenomenal work ethic and commitment to their teammates. Injuries were a major setback for the team as top runners became injured either early on or towards the end ofthe season. Coach Hood says he isgoing to focus a lot more with pre-hab excesses for shin splints this offseason. The coach also says he isgoing to try to connect with the middle schools to try to get more girls to come out as afear of competing has stopped some ofthem. Shannon Tang was able to bring home an All Twin City award for the Maroons. Winning IHSA Scholastic Achievement Awards were Jeeyoon Chun, junior Grace Rispoli, senior Grace Shirley, and Shannon Tang. Esther Chung and junior Grace Rispoli both were voted to win Leadership Awards within the program.

he Boys’ Swimming and Diving season had an up and down season. Only having 2seniors, freshmen Brian Bernhardt, sophomores Nikolas Johnson, Ryan WWierschem, Davin Yoo, Andrew Trame and juniors Justin To, Zach Plattner, and Mitchell Devine had to step up and try to pick up where they left off. With the strong coaching of head coach Dave Young, and assistant coaches, Katie Van Hootegem and Scott Wierschem the team made tremendous strides towards improvements for years to come. With those improvements, the Maroons were able to send Nikolas Johnson, Ryan Wierschem, Mitchell Devin, Justin To, and Davin Yoo as the alternate to state. All in allthe boys had aseason ifull of improvements that will be passed down for many seasons to come.

he season had it's ups and downs. The team madea lot of progress in the summer/ during football season. They were able to hold a number ofteam bondings during this time, which issomething that really lhelped the team come together. The team mastered a lot of diffcult stunts this year, and they had more diffcult routines this year than last. All ofthe groups were able to master 360s and Ruby Slippers, which issomething they were not able to do atthe beginning ofthe season. They even had one cheerleader get

Overall, however a lot ofwork still needs to be done with their tumbling because this was one ofthe areas that really hurt their score on the overall routine. The team faced a lot of difficulties this year, but in the end there was acore group that really pushed ech and did agood job.

T he 2017-2018 Lady Maroons had an up and down season with

having 10 overall wins and 1 conference win. The team participated in two tournaments over the season- the Morton Tournament where they placed 4th and Decatur Eisenhower Tournament where they placed 2nd. Throughout the season, the Lady Maroons played 10 games against teams in the top 5. During regional play, they were able to upset Paris with 2:30 left in he half to advance to the Regional Finals. In the finals they played Effingham and took a hard loss, 38-69. Making it to the finals really allowed the Lady Maroons to grow closer individually and as a team o show them what they are capable of doing. he Maroons boys’ basketball team had avery successful season despite only having one returning starter from lastyear's team. They played avery tough schedule and inished with arecord of20 wins and 9 losses. Eight out of heir nine losses came against teams that were ranked inthe op 10 intheir state. The Big 12conference was very competitive thisyear, and the team finished insecond place ith arecord ofeight wins and two losses. he 2017-2018 bleacher bums were considered the most wild and energetic student section that Central has had in years. Students of all classes filled the stands countless times, and their energy helped lead Central to many big victories throughout the year. Some of the most popular events were the games against Centennial in basketball and football. Central dominated in all of these games thanks to a great crowd backing them up. These students made sure to get into their opponents heads and they made sure that Central was an extremely tough place to play.

At Central, the art's programs are really special as they have allowed students to express who they truly are by dancing, drawing, painting, acting, singing, and much more. Students who join the clubs, or try out for plays are able to be relieved by the never ending stress from school and other events in life. Central offers courses that also help relieves stress like Art Survey, Cultural Arts, Ceramics, Photography, Choir, and Sculpting. Students can also join the after school activities such as theater, dance team, color guard, and band. Central has amazing programs when it comes to academics, but the students who choose to stay with their artistic skills start to build their resume with factors like becoming the lead in the musical, having a solo in Choir, being a Drum Major in Marching Band, and having art displayed. Central has so much support when it comes to the Arts and that all helps builds the confidence in the participating students and shows how exceptional everyone is.

Motel is afraid of asking for Tzeitel’s handin marriage because of her father vevye (lan Wilkey) who is known for keeping tradition. After the Sabbath prayer /evye meets Lazar assuming mistakenly that Lazar wants to buy his cow. Once that is s-leared up Tevye agrees to let Lazar marry Tzeitel. Tevye announces the next vonorning that he agrees to let Lazar Wolf marry Tzeitel. Tzeitel cries and begs her rtather to not make her marry him. 5. LaDonna Wilson was asked to direct the 2018 All-State show, and Mrs. Sarah (Schmohr) Mohr was chosen as the choreographer. This "bestie" duo has created some very memorable Central shows over the last eight years. Over 400 students auditioned and interviewed for the All State production and 107 were selected to participate in the cast, crew, and pit orchestra. Central had three students involved-- Josiah Croegaert, Omer Barkan, and Anja Schrag. This year's All-State production Big Fish was selected to perform at Nationals in June--the first All State to win this prestigious honor. Ms. Wilson is extremely proud of the positivity from the entire company and cannot wait to showcase statewide Illinois talent on National stage.

On December 9th and 10th of 2017, Champaign Central High School Music held their 37th Annual Madrigal Dinner. The Madrigal Dinner is a modern day re-enactment of a Renaissance Feast. It includes a meal while students who are costumed as Madrigals sang many season favorites accompanied by a brass quintet and two stringed instruments. As the Annual Madrigal Dinner has been held for almost 40 years, Central hopes to keep this tradition going for many more years.

At Central there are two choir classes available to students interested in singing, the chamber choir for advanced singers and concert choir for beginner to intermediate singers. The chamber choir rehearses and performs avariety of choral literature, which includes Madrigal along with other classical literature. During class, the students do advanced voice training and music reading. The students also participate in concerts, competitions, and various programs throughout Champaign and Illinois. The concert choir rehearses and performs music that includes popular, folk, classical, and other musical literature. This choir consists of a mixture of voices: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. In class, students also work on vocal training and sight reading skills. Q: What isyour favorite memory ofbeing in marching band?

A: ‘Competing in my first competition as afreshman. We started off facing backfield, and when we turned around, we were met with acheering crowd in the bleachers. At that moment, |finally understood why people love marching band."

Q: How did you feel during your performance as a Drum Major?

A: "So nervous. At that point, | still had a ton to learn. You always hope that once you start conducting, the jitters would go away. That was not the case for me. shook the entire time, I'm surprised the band could ollow my hands."

Q: What made you want to join marching band?

A: "Mr. and Mrs. Currey. didn't really do band in middle school, but always heard great things about he Central band directors so thought would give it atry. Italso meant |didn't have to take p.e."

Q: How did you feel being a Drum Major for the Macy's Great American Marching Band?

A: "Being a Drum Major for the Macy's parade has been my dream since taking on the role back in 2019. It ruly didn't hit me that made it until was on my way home from New York after the parade. still can't believe it. feel incredibly blessed and there's absolutely no way would have made it that far without the support of my family, friends, co-drum majors, and my band directors."

Q: What advice would you give to future Drum Majors?

A: "Being Drum Major is a leadership role and the best leaders ironically are those who put others before hem. Be of service when you can, and lead by example. Never be afraid to make mistakes. Don't be oo hard on yourself. Don't lose your whistle.”

a he marching band season began with a band camp for the drumline, pit, and colorguard on July 31st-

August 4th and a band camp for the whole band and colorguard on August /th-1th. During band camp, the band learned the drill chart to the 2017 field show, Mission: To Mars, and the music to the songs Mission: To Mars, Venus Irae, and The Red Planet. The band then performed their field show music at the Urbana Sweet Corn Festival on August 26th. The Marching Maroons performed at 5 home football game halftimes and 4 marching band competitions in Washington, Danville, Charleston, and Champaign. The band received 3rd place in all 4 competitions and best drum major at the Danville Viking Invitational. The field performance portion of the season closed with honoring the seniors at the last home football game on October 20th. The band held a Marching Maroons Replay Concert on November 14th and the Annual Middle School tour on November 17th. On November 21st-26th, the Marching Maroons participated in the Thanksgiving Parade of Bands and Candlelight Processional in Orlando, FL at Disney World, which marked the end to the Marching Maroons 2017 season.

The Marching Maroons Color Guard started practicingJuly 31stto August 4th at band camp for Drumline, pit, and colorguard during the summer. They also participated inthe band camp for allof Marching Maroons from August 7th-Iith.The Color Guard performed the Mission to Mars halftime field show along with Central's marching band. They also competed incompetitions along with the band inWashington, Danville, Charleston, and Champaign where the Marching Maroons received 3rd inallfour competitions. Central's 2017-2018 dance team performed during halftime at the boys' basketball games with lots of spirit to energize the crowd. This year's yearbook, the 108th edition of the Maroon Yearbook, was brought together by a collective group of Central students. Each staff member brought a lot of ideas that lead to many different possibilities. This year's staff consisted of a lot of new students who have never taken this class before. It was a lot of fun to teach you all and to see how far you all have grown.

A young woman passes the time by playing with a fidget spinner. Fidget spinners were anew hand-held toy designed to reduce stress, that became wildly popular. But the spinners caused anxiety for parents due to safety concerns, including choking, fireand lead poisoning.

A Southern California man stops to pray as fires kicked up near his home in early December. The Santa Ana winds blow more fiercely and longer during the early winter, creating numerous wildfires that caused tens of thousands of people to evacuate.

Riding out the storm

Rescue workers evacuate stranded residents in Texas during the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season, which was one of the busiest in years with 10 hurricanes forming and six reaching Category 3 or higher. Hurricane Harvey slammed into south Texas on Aug. 25 as a Category 4 and then stalled, causing catastrophic flooding. Hurricane Irma struck several Caribbean islands before hitting the Florida Keys as a Category 4 storm, and then traveled north through Florida. Hurricane Maria left swath of devastation across Puerto Rico.

Protestors rally in London as part of the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements, which encouraged women to share their stories and end harassment. Many public figures faced backlash after victims came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct. Time magazine named “The Silence Breakers” its 2017 Person of the Year. Merriam-Webster declared “feminism” the 2017 Word of the Year.

A brutally cold winter Revelers brave frigid temperatures at the New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square. An arctic burst dropped the temperature to nine degrees, the second coldest ball drop on record. New York wasn’t the only place facing a cold winter. International Falls, Minnesota, which dubs itself the “Nation’s Icebox,” hit a record low of -36 degrees. Despite the cold wave, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared 2017 the globe’s third warmest year on record.

Twice the type

Twitter’s signup page, which averaged roughly 330 million monthly active users, displays on a smartphone. In November 2017, Twitter doubled its character limit from 140 to 280, to mixed reviews. The most popular social media platforms among American teenagers were Instagram and Snapchat (according to Science Daily).

Slime!

A group of girls stir together the ingredients for slime. This gooey, homemade gunk experienced a resurgence in popularity. Most recipes require only a combination of white glue and laundry detergent, with food coloring to make itbright.

Rising tensions

A South Korean slodier stands watch at the village of Panmunjon, on the border with North Korea. Tensions between the North and the rest ofthe world continued to rise, as the small, isolated country continued missile tests despite facing sanctions. North and South Korea resumed talks after two years of silence, during which the South allowed North Korea to send athletes to the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Unicorn everything

The limited-edition Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino fillsthe pages of Instagram. The brightly-colored coffee concoction changed color and was an instant hit on social media. The unicorn trend didn’t stop there, spreading to foods like bagels, toast, cake and smoothies and even outside the kitchen, with brightly-dyed unicorn hair and multi-colored painted nails.

American takeover at U.S. Open

Sloane Stephens celebrates after battling through a historic all-American women’s semifinal and final at the 2017 U.S. Open to clinch her firstever Grand Slam title. Stephens had returned to the tour only two months earlier after time off for an injury and was ranked 957th in the world.

Dream season

NASCAR driver Martin Truex Jr. celebrates after winning the Ford EcoBoost 400 on Nov. 19 at the Miami Speedway. The win clinched the first Cup Series championship for Truex Jr., who enjoyed a dream season with eight wins and 19 top five finishes in 36 races.

Walk-on to Heisman Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield responds to the crowd after winning the Heisman trophy in a landslide victory. The OU quarterback garnered the third-highest percentage of possible points (86 percent) in the Heisman voting since 1950. Mayfield, who began his career as a walk-on at Texas Tech, became the first-ever non-scholarship player in the scholarship era to win the Heisman.

Dauwalter sets the bar

Courtney Dauwalter, a 31-year-old school teacher from Colorado, wins The Moab 240-mile Endurance Run outright by 10 hours. In its inaugural year, the 383K ultra, which took place in Moab, Utah, catered to a special breed of ultrarunners. Only 150 registrants were allowed, and runners had a cutoff at 112 hours—nearly five days of running. Dauwalter finished the course at just less than 58 hours.

Kim, 17, was one of the highlights for the Americans when she took gold in the event with a near-perfect score of 98.25. The cast of the new CW television show, Riverdale, gets unveiled to audiences. The show, loosely based on the characters first seen in the famous Archie Comics, was hailed as innovative by critics and became popular with younger audiences.

Taylor Swift performs at a concert in San Jose, California, in December. Swift’s newest album, Reputation, was released in November and sold more than two million copies in a week, making itthe best-selling album of 2017.

Back and even stranger Mike, Will and the entire gang from Hawkins are getting ready for more trouble. Wildly popular and critically acclaimed Netflix sci-fi TV series Stranger Things returned for its second season, debuting the weekend before Halloween to huge numbers of viewers.

Pop star Ed Sheeran performs forfans, while his latest aloum, + made him the best-selling musical artist of 2017. Songs “Castle on the Hill,” “Shape of You” and “Perfect” all were among the most downloaded tracks of the year.

No more lies

Pretty Little Liars releases its seventh, and final, season to its fans on Freeform. Another Freeform TV show, Switched at Birth, also aired its final season this year, with millions of fans tuning into the series finales of the hit shows.

Grammy magic

Bruno Mars performs “Finesse (Remix)” at the 60th Grammy Awards. Itwas a big night for Mars, who swept six total awards. In addition to winning Best R&B Performance, Best R&B Song and Best R&B Album, Mars eventually took the top three categories, winning Song of the Year for “That’s What Like,” Record of the Year for 24K Magic and Album of the Year.

SNL resurgence

Actress Melissa McCarthy drives a podium down a New York City street, while filming a sketch for Saturday Night Live. Thanks to presidential-election fueled viewership, SNL had its best season in 23 years. The long-running NBC sketch show seized ona turbulent presidential campaign and an even more tumultuous presidency— leading to an increase in viewers, ratings and viral sketches.

Oprah steals the show

Oprah Winfrey delivers an electrifying speech at the 75th Annual Golden Globes as she accepts the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Winfrey was the first African American recipient of the honor and the 15th woman since the award’s inception in 1952. Her speech about sexual harassment, racial injustice and press freedom brought the audience to their feet and had many urging her to run for office.

Critics pick Kendrick Kendrick Lamar poses with his collection of trophies at the 2017 MTV Awards. Lamar’s latest album was crowned music critics’ favorite of the year, beating out some of the year’s best-selling albums. Critics gushed over the Compton-born rapper’s fourth studio effort, with Billboard magazine stating: “It isthe unimpeachable truth that Kendrick Lamar recorded the greatest album of 2017.”

A special lady

Actress Saoirse Ronan stars as the title character in the coming-of-age high school comedy, Lady Bird. Lady Bird was nominated for Best Picture at the 90th annual Academy Awards, as was The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro’s genre-bending film about loving “otherness,” which led all movies with 13 nominations. Other Best Picture nominees included Get Out and Dunkirk.

Long live the king

Marvel’s comic book character

T’Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman, suits up for the big screen in his stand-alone flick, Black Panther. The landmark film, which was released in February, featured a modern black superhero and a primarily black cast in a Marvel movie for the first time. Black Panther’s $200 million opening weekend was one of the five largest ever.

An electric vehicle (EV) gets plugged into a charging station, a sight that became more common in the U.S. Almost 200,000 EVs were sold in 2017. Some of the most common models were Tesla Models S and X and Chevy Bolt and Volt.

665 days in space

Astronaut Peggy Whitson gazes at the Earth from aboard the International Space Station. Her third mission, lasting nine-anda-half months, broke the record for the most cumulative time spent in space by a U.S. astronaut — 665 days. Whitson returned to earth on Sept 3, 2017.

The rise of voice assistants Google Home and Amazon Echo are put on display at consumer electronics show. “Smart speakers,” which respond to voice commands using artificial intelligence, quickly became trendy, with more than 35 million estimated users in 2017.

Net neutrality repealed Federal Communications Commission

Chairman Ajit Pai delivers remarks at a hearing on net neutrality. The FCC voted 3-2 to repeal net neutrality regulations, which many argued could allow internet providers to charge more, and block or slow access to online content. Attorneys general in 22 states filed a lawsuit challenging the FCC’s decision.

Safer reverse

A screen shows the backup camera view in a 2017 Chevy Colorado. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration required all new cars sold in the U.S. after May 2018 to come equipped with a rearview video system.

Taking the plunge Program Manager Earl Maize discusses the end ofthe Cassini spacecraft program. The spacecraft explored Saturn, its rings and its moons for 13 years, sending back roughly 450,000 images. The mission ended Sept. 15, 2017, when Cassini dove into Saturn’s atmosphere.

Gene-editing breakthroughs

A researcher studies CRISPR’s capabilities to combat a disease affecting citrus plants. CRISPR — an acronym for “clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats” — showed great potential to make highly specific gene modifications in living cells and organisms. Itwas used to remove a heart disease-causing gene from human embryos, edit Huntington’s disease from mice and eliminate HIV from living animals.

Darkness in the daytime

A group of spectators in North Carolina view the solar eclipse at the time of totality on Aug. 21. Millions of Americans stopped what they were doing for 2 % minutes to watch the total solar eclipse. The eclipse occurred in a 70-mile-wide swath from Oregon to South Carolina.

Advances in AR

Starbucks customers use their smartphones to access a coffeemaking video via augmented reality (AR). AR became more widespread, with social media platforms like Facebook and Snapchat announcing new AR experiences for their users.

Backflipping robot

Atlas, humanoid robot being developed by U.S. lab Boston Dynamics, performs an acrobatic backflip. The company released video footage of Atlas running, jumping and flipping, and itquickly went viral across social media.
