At Freshman Orientation, students have a chance to practice their schedules, meet their teachers, make new friends, and learn their way around the halls of Central. After a morning full of navigating, the freshman finish out the day with a variety of games and relay races in CombesGym.

| Bas year Central kicks off homecoming week with the junior vs. senior powderpuff game. The game takes place at McKinley Field where the Central football team practices. The event is followed by a bonfire. The girls set aside a few weekends to practice their football skills with the help of a few players from the varsity football team. It is a lot of fun and girls look forward to it every year. This year, it was a very good game and everyone put in a lot of effort with an ending score of 50-6 and the seniors winning again.

Ce Johnson was very impressed with the team since they hadalotofnewcomers.Theboysdidverywellatsectionals placingthirdandhadacoupleofrunnersandjumpersadvanceto thestatecompetitioninCharleston.NicholasWalkeradvancedin the400mandinthehighjump,placingfourth.NicholasJackson alsoadvancedtostateinthehighjumpandsharedthefourth placespotwithWalker.CoachJohnsonisveryeagertostart trainingforthe2016-2017season.Theyhavemanyfreshmenand sophomorescomingbackanditwillbeapromisingseason.

At their last track and field meet, seniors Nicholas Walker, Joshua Buttlar, Henry Sills, Benjamin Jefferson, Carr Hess, Jack Tufte, and Payton Woods take in their last moments together.

C= Hood was very impressed by the girls and their accomplishments for the season. The girls performed well at sectionals, having five All-Sectional performances including two sectional Championships. They had four girls qualify for state in three events and senior Sharon Mainor was all state in both the 200m and the 400m. The girls had several new members join the track and field team and it was the largest group in team history. Coach Hood is excited for the next track season as they have a solid group of juniors coming back and some really good underclassmen that will help build the program.

acing his toughest schedule in all his 15 years being head coach, John iO Staab was still able to have a stand out year making it all the way to the sectional semi-finals. With the schedule only having one 2A team and the rest being 3A teams, the Maroons finished 28-10, having 7 of their 10 losses only by run with each team they lost to winning 20+ games. The Maroons got knocked out of the post season by Springfield which is the third season in a row they lost to a team who eventually made it to the elite eight or better. In their one week spring break trip to Vero Beach, Florida, the team went undefeated beating teams from New York, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. With their 16th regional championship win the Maroons also won their 9th Charlie Due Invitational Tournament and won 2 of 3 PBR Super Prep series games down in Louisville, Kentucky. For the 7th year in a row the Maroons garnered the IHSA Team Academic Award with a team GPA of 3.56. Seniors Alec Barger, Joseph Aeilts, and Tanner Gordon were all selected unanimously for first team all-area conference. Alec Barger also won Big-12 offensive player of the year with Tanner Gordon winning Big-12 pitcher of the year.

he wins vs losses may not indicate a successful season for the Central 13 Maroons varsity girls' soccer team but this group of players worked Losses hard and always competed tough. The Maroons started their season in a strong game against Urbana University High but were defeated 2-3. The next two matches came with big wins against Monticello and Peoria and then a tight game of 3-1 against Mattoon. The rivalry game against Centennial ended with the Maroons being shutout 0-5. They lost against Normal University High but came back with a respectable 4-1 win against Urbana High School. In 2016 the girls participated in the Prospect Knights Invitational. They placed 4th in their division playing teams from the Chicago Area as well as Wisconsin's Wauwatosa East High School. After the weekend tournament the Maroons faced a string of losses until squeaking a 1-0 win against Danville in their first post season game. The girls final game of the season was a disappointing loss against Centennial. The match seemed to repeat their first encounter during the regular season at ee with a shutout of 0-5. Other individual successes were made by junior Midfielder Payton Thompson making a Payton Thompson as All-Area First Team midfielder. Senior Rachael pass, made All- Area First Team as well Courtney, junior Sarah Collins, sophomore Grace Redden and as scoring 7 goals throughout the season. freshman Naomi Gillett were awarded All-Area honorable mentions.

Te year, the Central boys’ tennis team became even better than they were last year, finishing 9th in the Big 12 conference. The team had big shoes to fill from the loss of four seniors. The new team did not win as much as they would have liked in 2016; however, they gained two

It is because of their hard work that the team finished 8th overall in the Springfield invitational, 14th in the Moline invitational and 7th at sectionals. Sadly, the Central boys' tennis team said goodbye to senior Nikhil Thope, who left the team with the best that he could give. He won the Richwoods Invitational, finished 2nd at the Big 12 and sectionals. Not only did he qualify for state, Nikhil also won the Most Valuable Player for the tennis team and the Keegan Bannon award. The teams most improved award went to seniors Dusty Frye, Leo Bannon, and Henry Goldsmith. The team lost more than 5 seniors this year but this will give a chance to the younger portion of team to step up and take their spots on both varsity and JV. The Maroon's dreams were soon out of reach losing 3 in a row after an impressive blow out over Peoria Richwoods. The Maroons were able to snap the streak with 3 wins in a row and looked strong in their win versus Peoria Notre Dame, a highly ranked team in the state, and finished the season just under .500 at 4-5. Top wide receiver Jacob Beesley and Elite tight end Matthew Sharick were among the few selected for Ist team all-conference, with Josh Parker earning a honorable mention for running back and Ryan Chalifoux with the special mention for kickers. Matthew Sharick was also a honorable mention for defensive lineman. Jacob Beesley and Ryan Chalifoux made first team all-area for offense. Josh Parker, Marshall Thompson, and Matthew Sharick made all area second team for defense. Jacob Beesley set the school record for most career receiving yards.

he Central Girls golf team also had a great year. With 6 wins and only 3 losses, the girls dominated the Big 12 conference at 2nd place. The girls also went on the finish 3rd in the regional tournament for the 3rd year in a row. Mia Hayasaki individually placed 30th in state. She also won the teams Most Valuable Player award. Mia was awarded All-State, and featured in an article in the News-Gazette. Team captions Mia Hayasaki and Mackenize McCoy both won the award of All-Conference.

te tennis team had their best season in several years, finishing with a record of 8 and 1 overall and 5 and | in the conference. The team finished second at the Big 12 conference tournament, and won the class 1A sectional title. The team had 8 seniors to help lead the team along with standout sophomore Ally Bergh at #2 and freshman Olivia Gunn who ended up being at the #3 spot despite being one of the youngest on the team. Five players qualified for State with two doubles teams and one singles. One of the main reasons for the team's success was their depth. The team not only had great players on the varsity team, they had excellent JV players who could come in and make a strong impact. Senior Olivia Dodds made the All-Area First Team, sophomore Allison Bergh made the All-Area Second Team, and freshman Olivia Gunn made the All-Area second team. Not only did the tennis team have excellent players to help them win, they also had a great coach. Gary Day won Coach of the Year in the News-Gazette after the standout season for the Maroons.

le 2016 girls' swimming and diving season was one of many accomplishments for Central High School. Out of the twenty-seven girls on the team, six were seniors. The Lady Maroons had a veteran team, and it showed. The girls had several victories, including a first \ es _ place finish at the Centennial Invite and the Twin City meet. With = % freshman Liara Aber and Ally Miller, the team gained much needed points to get big wins over Danville and Centennial. They finished the season with 5 wins and | loss. Utilizing the emotions passion, commitment, and respect, some of the girls were able to set personal records at the Big 12 Conference meet as well as at sectionals. The team is divided into swimming and diving, having different coaches for each section. The divers were coached by Nikki Johnson, and the swimmers were coached by Liza Dickensen. The team's head coach, Will Barker, is also a veteran when it comes to swim. After 24 years of coaching the Lady Maroons, he decided to retire after the 2016 season. Coach Barker was glad to have seen one more great season from the girls, and anticipates more great wins in the coming 2017 season, even though he will not be coaching.

OUR GAME VOLLEYBALL

he Champaign Central Girls' varsity volleyball team had a very successful season, going into regionals in the third seed. The Central Maroons had a very young team this year, having the majority of the starting six being sophomores, Katherine LeGrande, Rachel Hurt, and Rylee Hinton, so the upcoming years for Central volleyball are set up for success. Having the majority of the team graduate last year and getting a new coach, Manny Rodriguez, no one knew how this season was going to turn out, but the Central Maroons pleasantly surprised everyone by showing that they can still be successful with a change of atmosphere on and off the court. With a 20-18 record this season, the Central Maroons had a rough start to the season but showed their desire to improve by ending their conference season in the third seed. The team this year only had 4 seniors, middle hitter Taya Westfield, outside hitter/DS Casey Dorner, right side hitter Madeleine Atkinson, and manager Ryan Anton. Even with the number of seniors so small on the team this year, they still were great leaders and helped carry the team to a regional championship. The Central Maroons had a successful post season by winning the regional championship against the Mattoon Green Wave, but unfortunately getting knocked out the first round of sectionals by the Jacksonville Crimsons. 1O Varsity Soccer team. They started their season shutting out Ste Losses Thomas More 2-0 and then placed 3rd in the Bradley-Bourbonnais Tournament before being defeated in tight matches against Urbana University and Mattoon. The team went on to place 5th at the Urbana Tournament which started a three win shutout against Manual 8-0, Richwoods 5-0 and Centennial 4-0. Urbana High School disrupted that winning streak with a disappointing loss but the Maroons came back the following game with a tight win against Bloomington 2-1. The match against Normal University ended ina tie 3-3 to then go into a two game loss against Peoria Notre Dame and Normal Community. The Maroons came back in their next match with an impressive win against Charleston 5-1 but lost to Danville and Normal West. The regular season ended on a high note with a huge win against Peoria 8-0. Post season play also found sweet

revenge against Urbana University with a win of 2-1 but the Maroons Goalie Peter Wagner was Honorable couldn't do the same against Urbana High School. The team finished Mention for Big 12 Conference. Wagner 6th in the 2016 Big Ten Conference. had 85 saves over the season.

SWIMMING & IDIVING

he Central boys' swim team had an exceptional 2016-2017 season. Led by team captains Cam Barnard, Andrew Mininger, Luke Thompson, Jack Wierschem, and Devon Bell, the team went on to win 4 out of 5 regular season matches. The team also placed 2nd at the Bloomington invite, Ist in the Twin City, Ist at sectionals, and 30th at state as a team. Everybody on the team achieved a personal record this season. Senior Cam Barnard was named All-American and All- State. He placed Ist in sectional for the 50 free and the 100 yard butterfly. Senior Luke Thompson was named New Gazette Player of the week placed Ist in sectionals for the 200 IM and 100 Back. Freshman Ryan Wierschem placed Ist in sectionals for 100 free. Sophomore Mikey Hynds, placed Ist in sectionals for diving. This year the team is losing 6 of their top swimmers. The group grew together as a team and displayed great sportsmanship. They also volunteered for the Salvation Army Bell ringing drive.

Ce Merle was very impressed with what the team accomplished this year with the re-evaluating what they were doing with the program and the goals on new equipment and uniforms. The team was very young and had some struggles due to their youth. Coach Merle Z\\ believes the group has a lot of potential and a promising future. They had 4 wrestlers that placed 4th that were not seeded at the Urbana Regional which included, Natris Morris, Jackson Skube, De'Leon Eppich-Rice, and Terrell Lyons. They had2 sectional qualifiers that placed 2nd, Dalton Hall, and a 3rd place, Dylan Gunn -none of which are seniors and will be returning next year. The team was very young and they had a lot of new wrestlers come out for the team. Ten of them had never wrestled before or had 1 year experience. The team had over 50% freshman on the team and coach believes that ifthey stick with it and work hard, the team could be amazing in three years. Coach Merle was very happy after competing at the twin city meet and they won the twin city meet for the Ist time since he had been Head Coach. The students were also very happy and very proud of their teammates and themselves for accomplishing the Twin City Title. alae 2016-2017 varsity cheer team held try outs later than most teams which caused the cheerleaders to start off with a rocky season. The team also had brand new coaches for the first time in four years. Even with the struggles and challenges faced, the girls came together creating new friendships that will be impossible to forget. Sadly, the cheerleaders will say goodbye to seniors Jhazmyne Hunter, Brianna Wade, Adrianna Moore-Johnson, and Dallas Caldwell. These special seniors led their team through their struggles and taught them valuable lessons.

IN team, new dream. The 2016-2017 girls' basketball team became even better than they were last year. Starting with the off season, Coach Pancho Moore had the girls working in the weight room and other workouts to get the girls in shape. As soon as November came around, the girls had practiced every day for two hours until their first game in the Southeast Springfield Tournament. The girls did not start the season like they wanted to but they did not give up then, coming into 2017 with a four game winning streak. With new people on their team anda better idea of where the team wanted to go, the girls’ basketball team fought hard for victories all throughout the season. Through many trials and tribulations, the team stuck together making themselves even more close knit than ever before. Ending the season with a tough loss in the regional championship game against Mattoon, the girls' team will be prepared for next years round of games. The team will be saying goodbye to Kelsey Patton, Anyesha Williams, Maria Eppich, Meagan Borgsmiller and Panayiota Laros. These ladies have contributed greatly to the girls’ basketball team in ways than one could only imagine and even though they are sad to leave, the girls are excited to see where their friends will go in life.

cademic Letter Night is a night of academic achievement that happens once a year in Combes Gym. During this pee students are allowed to invite a teacher who has helped them in their academic success. The students receive 4 certificate to show their academic success and a "letter", or patch for a letterman jacket if it is the student's first time receiving the award. Ce High School offers a large variety of clubs to fulfill the different interests of students. Whether a student is looking for a club to relieve stress, to have fun with, to help the environment, to advance them academically, to celebrate a culture, or to support their peers, Central has clubs dedicated to each of these categories and more. Every student at Central has the opportunity to involve themselves with multiple clubs throughout their time in high school. Many clubs meet weekly or monthly in order to keep members up to date with their activities. Joining clubs throughout a student's time in high school is a great way to get involved with the school, interact with peers, and make memories. ce African American Club at Central planned a remarkable Black History Month Program, terrific NAAPID program and collaborated with the drama program for a successful talent show. The Black History Month program, Guilty by Melanation: A Town Hall Meeting, was organized by Patricia Bradford. In the program, she had people play victims of police brutality and when the victims read off their names, there were also poems by some of the students at Central and a discussion where the students could talk about race. African American Club also volunteered at many places and provided a community that welcomed everyone, regardless of race. This year, the club was headed by Mr. Turner and Mr. Maatuka. The executive board was Daja Wilson as president, Kayla Napper as Vice President, Trinity Brown as Secretary and Jabali Maatuka as the Treasurer. There were ups and downs but in the end, African American Club was a family.

In November the band had the opportunity to work with Ron Carter - former director of the world renowned Northern Illinois University Jazz Ensemble. This helped them prepare for their performance at TheMidwestClinicinChicago.Thisclinicisthelargestinternationalbandandorchestramusicconferenceinthe world and hosts over 17,000 musicians annually. Continuing on through the winter the band traveled to the North ShoreFestivalandtookhomeacleansweepofIstplaceawards.

abs Champaign Central concert bands consist of four talented bands full of dedicated students. These bands are the concert band, symphonic band, wind symphony, and orchestra. This year was very exciting for both the band students and the audience, due to excellent pieces performed beautifully. These included a popular piece from Star Wars, "Scherzo for X-Wings", which was a favorite of the students. WIth multiple concerts per year, and four bands each concert. there was no lack of talent and amazement coming from the very hard-working band students.

Q:Whatisyour favoritememoryof themarchingband?

ope theme for the 2016 season of the Marching Maroons was "Concrete Jungle" and it was written by J.R. Trimpe. One hundred and eighty-three students had band camp the first week of August, from 8am to 5pm, where temperatures rose as high as 90 degrees. And as always, the band had hour-and-a-half long practices at the end of the day, every day during school. Like every year, the band worked really hard to create a great show. This spectacular tribute to city life included movements "Morning Rush", "Pulse", and "Nightlife". The first movement consisted of the band suddenly "waking up"from their sleeping positions on the field, and then continued to start marching. The second movement was named asa tribute to the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, and was a powerful ballad. The third movement was unique and jazzy, which wasa stunning finale. Alongside performing at the Sweetcorn Festival, the Marching Maroons traveled and competed at Washington, IL on September 10th; Danville, IL on September 24th where they won first place; and the University of Illinois on October15th. Their season ended with the middle school tour, traveling to Franklin, Jefferson, and Edison middle school to recruit new members.

A Time to Create Art

Central High School offers a variety of classes that appeal to those interested in the arts, and some of these classes include photography, ceramics and the general art classes. There are three art teachers to help students interested in art to be creative and fine tune their skills. These pieces were selected by art teachers who felt students did a great job with their work; however, these students represent only a portion of the artistic student population at Central.

“All students look forward to their senior yee at Central because all of the privileges. The 2016-2017 yearbook focuses on each and every memory that can be made throughout your time in high school, making these years a time to remember. This book documents many school activities students participate in to remind them of the broad spectrum of memories made throughout just one year. Students reflect on their multitude of experiences spent with classmates, teachers, and friends, that has brought their time spent at Champaign Central High School to be an unforgettable experience.

Memories made at Central High School can range from class activities to out of school events. Sporting events, school plays and school dances are some of the most memorable events held at Central High School that students will remember well past their high school years. Students use these years as a time to learn and grow, developing into adulthood and preparing for life after high school. These memories shared here only happen once, so cherish the time, experience, and friends made throughout high school and be able to look back at these years and think of all the good times that were made.

Editors Note

This year's yearbook, the 107th edition of the Maroon Yearbook, was brought together through a collective group of Central students. This year's staff consisted of a majority of underclassmen, and throughout the year they have continuously grown in their knowledge of yearbook production. We have greatly enjoyed the time spent creating this yearbook and keeping up the traditions that have been carried throughout many years.

The three of us would like to extend a huge thank you to Ms. Sal for reminding us to stay on top of pages, supporting us and the new students throughout the year, and your attention to details on each spread. Another thanks to Mr. Kauffman for committing his time to give us great advice and help on the progress of the yearbook throughout the year, we appreciate you very much!
