s the school year comes to an end, freshmen, sophomores, and juniors start worrying about finals while seniors prepare for graduation and moving onto college. Itis not truly the end of the year until students have the chance to experience Prom. It is the final dance of the year where people dress up and enjoy one more high school dance before saying "Hello" to summer. Students took a trip to Paris, France, with the theme "Paris Lights". Prom was held at the Qualcomm building this year. Attendees entered through a hallway decorated with vines and little white tables behind backdrops of Paris. Prom 2011 certainly felt like a night in Paris.

very May, Seniors look forward to the most important day of high school: Graduation Day. It is the day some have been waiting for since the first day of freshmen year, while others never want it to come. Hundreds of families and friends gathered at the Krannert Center of Performing Arts on May 24, 2011 for this yearly event to see their senior receive a diploma. It is the very last time the class of 2011 is gathered together before each person heads off to what lies ahead. After graduation, seniors go on to college, take on a full time job, or even travel abroad for a year. Most seniors would say, "The tassle's worth the hassle."

s homecoming rolls around, so does spirit week. | This is the week where students are finally able to use their creativity to come up with the most outstanding \ é loutfits. This year's Homecoming theme: "Where in the World is X e Max Maroon?" Spirit Week days included: Monday as Movie ‘Character Day, Tuesday as Twin Day, Wednesday as Blast from the §Past Day, Thursday as Class Color Day, and of course, Friday as {Maroon and White Day. The student outfits were over-the-top ‘land as impressive as always. nother year of homecoming traditions! On Thursday, the Powder Puff game and bonfire went on as they have for many years. The game was heated with juniors and seniors ready to battle it out. The seniors won the game, leaving the juniors ready to win next year. After the game, the fire was lit and everyone gathered around to watch a preview of the cheerleaders’ homecoming performance. Friday brought fun and festivites to school. In the afternoon, the pep rally kicked off the eventful day. Students and teachers from each grade competed against each other in competitions. Also, the cheerleaders and the marching band performed at the rally. The homecoming court also made an appearance. Following the pep rally, everyone rushed outside for the parade. The sophomores were victorious this year with their "Beat the Green Wave" float. Everyone left school in high spirits for the game against the Matto on Green Wave that night!

Homecoming Game

entral got pumped this year to head strongly into the Homecoming Game. The seniors wanted to live it up as their last year attending the game as a Central student. Bleacher Bums were packed into the student section decked out with school spirit. All of the spirit exerted from the Central students helped to pull the players through the game to a victory! Parents also attended the game in support of their alma mater and their kids. Teachers showed their maroon and white pride along with students for Central. The Central Maroons defeated the Mattoon Green Wave, 58-42.

here in the World is Max Maroon? 2011's Homecoming Dance was one for the ages. Around 800 people attended this annual event. The Homecoming Dance is always something that is looked forward to as school is back in session. Every year, new and exciting ways are found to ask a date to this fun event. The Du played new and old hits. Everyone certainly lived it up at the 2011 Homecoming Dance.

s most Central students already know, bands are a big deal at Central. Four popular bands at Central include An Evening With Your Mother, The Band Geeks, Flyboyz, and The Mourning After. The Band Geeks, which include Christian Wilkey, Steven Phluchek, lan Bassani, and Joey Buttlar have been together since 2007 and are still performing at places around the Champaign-Urbana area. The Mourning After is rather new with Tyler Kimble and Cubby Knox as vocals. An Evening With Your Mother has been together since 2011 with members Alleya Weibel, Kirby Jayes, and Cullyn Murphy, who play at places like The Iron Post and Indigo Gallery. These eclectic bands are what make nf Central High School the place to be.

7 every aspect of her life, Kaelin Taylor was nothing short of outstanding. She was truly someone who everyone admired. She had a passion for playing basketball and being the best teammate she could be in all the sports she participated in. There is not a single bad thing one could say about her. Her beautiful heart showed through in her relationships. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, and friend. Her death truly rocked the community and touched the lives of so many. She should have been standing with us on graduation day with the class of 2012. However, we must - remember that she is now in a better place. For those that knew. her, we know what an honor and privilege it was to have known her, and that she would have continued her path to being a mature, successful, and beautiful young lady.

Although Central's softball team had a rough year with low numbers of athletes, they worked hard to improve and utilize their ability. It was more of a rebuilding year for the Maroons, giving many underclassmen time to play on varsity. This will help the team in the long run as these youngsters grow into the game. The team is hoping for an improvement with plenty of workouts in the off-season. Next year, we are hoping girls like sophomore and Juniors , and are able to carry the team and help rebuild the Central Maroons’ softball program. The upcoming Maroons’ softball squad will definitely work for a different outcome next year.

The 2011 girls' swimming season was a superb year for the swimmers and even the coaches. The team had only 3seniors,HannahNewman, LauraHorvat,andElise Klaus, but had plenty of juniors and sophomores to help out the seniors. The girls’ swimming team had a successful showing at the state series, placing first in sectionals and sending 5 girls to the state competition. The yearwasonetoremember with all the memorable moments, such as winning the Twin City Meet. The 2011 girls golf squad was once again coached by Larry Becker. Coach Becker had three returning seniors on the team as and represented the class of 2012 on the links. Erickson made it to the sectional round of the state tournament, as did junior Choo will hope to build on her tournament experience and attempt to advance to state next season.

Coach Matt Fonner guided the boys golf team through the 2011 season with an experienced senior class. Seniors and saw regular time in the lineup. Their senior leadership was complemented by the skills of junior and sophomore Riley was named to the Big 12 all-conference team. Last year, the fall musical was Hairspray! As Tracy Turnblad joins Duke, Chloe Schriber, Neyer The Corny Collins Show, the number one viewed program in Baltimore, Robinson, and William Peete. social boundaries are pushed when she launches a campaign to integrate the show. The show chronicles events throughout the civil rights movement in Baltimore. Conflict arises when some characters want to continue the social norm. Hairspray consisted of six shows with the main characters being double cast. The performers began rehearsing mid-summer, and their hard work paid off with a big house every night.

Alice in Wonderland was the children's show last year. It is a story about a curious girl named Alice who chases a rabbit into a hole, and into a fantasy world called Wonderland. Alice goes on an adventure and encounters many peculiar characters. She has tea with a Mad Hatter, and is chased by card soldiers. The show was very funny and the cast and crew were able to create the iconic, magical land. The play consisted of five shows, mostly to younger audiences.

Greg Novak was born in Chicago in 1950 and moved to East Central Illinois in 1968. He attended Eastern Illinois University, later earning a FF Bachelor's in Education and a Master's in Library Science. He has worked for the Buckley-Loda school system and eventually worked at the Edison and Jefferson Middle School library, respectively. He retired from Jefferson in 2006 and went on to help teachers by becoming a member of the Unit 4 School Board. He passed away on March 7, 2012. He will be missed as he left big shoes to be filled.

As they say, three heads are better than one, and we have worked tirelessly throughout the year to create what we hope you will find to be a new and refreshing book. Rap icons Jay-Z and Kanye West worked together on anew album, Watch the Throne, and even went out on brief two-month tour to support the album. With only 33 performances, the Jay-Z Kanye concert became a highly sought after ticket.

After a public feud, producers fired actor Charlie Sheen from the popular sitcom Two and a HalfMen and his lead character was even killed off in the show’s storyline. Ashton Kutcher replaced Sheen in the cast for the new season, and the show continued to be hit.

Entering its third season, Glee maintained itsstatus as a hit. The cast went on a live concert tour. A spinoff reality show, The Glee Project, also began with the winners getting a shot to appear on the main show.

A A NEW RECORD Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski won his 903" game when the Blue Devils defeated Michigan State at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 15, allowing him to pass his mentor Bobby Knight and become the coach with the most wins in men’s college basketball history.

A GIANT WIN & The New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots, 21-17, in Super Bowl XLVI. New York quarterback Eli Manning, playing in the Indianapolis stadium made famous by his older brother Peyton, led the Giants on a game-winning touchdown drive in the last four minutes and was chosen Super Bowl MVP for the second time.

<4SAD TIMES AT PENN STATE Penn State University fired legendary football coach Joe Paterno, 85, after one of Paterno’s former long-time assistants, Jerry Sandusky, was arrested on child sex abuse charges. Just over two months later, Paterno died of complications from lung cancer.

After 14 years, MTV brought back itscult classic animated show Beavis and Butthead and began airing new episodes. A whole new generation got the chance to enjoy the dim-witted antics of heavy metal loving teens.

CRUISE CATASTROPHE >

At least 17 people died when the cruise ship Costa Concordia hit rocks close to shore off the coast of Tuscany, Italy. After the impact and blackout, passengers said they were told there was only an electrical problem. Only when the ship began to tilt did the 4,200 passengers and crew decide to get their life jackets.

<4 PAIN IN THE NECK

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning missed the entire NFL season after going through three surgeries to fix disc problems in his neck. Without the 4-time MVP, the Colts struggled to a 2-14 season. Manning’s ability to come back became a constant source of discussion.

A GREAT YEAR FOR GRIFFIN

Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin Ill racked up more than 4,600 yards passing and rushing, accounted for 45 touchdowns and led the Bears to a school-record 10 wins, which was good enough to win the Heisman Trophy.

GAMING IN 3D

Nintendo released the handheld Nintendo 3DS, which was the first video game unit able to project 3D effects without the use of special glasses. More than 400,000 3DS units quickly sold out in the first week.

Google launched anew social networking website called Google+, which was designed as an alternative and competitor to Facebook. Google+ used “Circles” and “Hangouts” to categorize friends. In its first six months, Google+ attracted 90 million users.

The third album from Selena Gomez & the Scene, called When the Sun Goes Down ended up becoming the best selling one yet for Gomez and her band.

One year after being shot at an event to meet with constituents, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona resigned her seat in Congress. Giffords had spent the past year relearning to talk and walk after being shot in the head. She said she would recover and return to Congress.

The U.S. Postal Service faced money troubles and looked at cutting back on services. The USPS planned to stop next-day service for firstclass mail. There also was talk about closing a couple hundred post offices and mail facilities and dropping Saturday mail delivery.

The USDA issued new standards for school Junches beginning for the next school year, including calorie ranges for different age groups and less sodium and fat. Fruits and vegetables also must be offered, but students will not be required to take them.

< HEADING FOR INJURY

A new study showed that heading a soccer ball a lot may cause brain damage. The study, done at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, found damage in people who were heading the ball about 1,300 times a year.

The Washington Monument was expected to be closed to the public for repairs for at least a year after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in August. Most U.S. troops stationed in Iraq were home by Dec. 31, ending the eight-year conflict there to fight terrorism and remove Iraqi President Saddam Hussein from power. About 100,0C troops were in Afghanistan, continuing the the Taliban, and a few thousand of the troops that were in Iraq were to be redeployed to Afghanistan.

<4 GONE TOO SOON Amy Winehouse, the British singer-songwriter known for her powerful voice and numerous hits, died of alcohol poisoning at her London home. An album of previously unreleased recordings put out after Winehouse’s death immediately became her highest debuting record in the U.S.

The look of college sports continued to change thanks to major conference realignment. Texas A&M and Missouri left the Big 12 to join the SEC, while Syracuse and Pittsburgh left the Big East to join the ACC. The Big East also lost West Virginia and TCU, which joined the Big 12. Confused yet?

< RUSSIAN VOTERS PROTEST

Protests erupted in several Russian cities following Parliamentary elections. The ruling party barely kept control, and thousands took to the streets to voice theirconcernaboutvoting irregularities. The protests were an act of defiance to President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Vv BLAGOJEVICH SENTENCED

Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was sentenced to 14 years in prison for his conviction on bribery and attempted extortion charges. In 2008, Blagojevich was arrested on 20 counts, including trying to appoint someone to President Barack Obama’s Illinois Senate seat in exchange for money or a high-paying job.

A BACK TO MARS

NASA began a new mission to Mars by sending a new robotic vehicle on its way to the red planet in November. Thejourneywasexpectedto take nine months. The launch waspartofanewprogram to determine whether Mars could support life.

< ANIMALS ON THE LOOSE

In Ohio, officers went on a big game hunt after man who owned more than 50 wild animals opened their cages and setthem free. The animals had been living ona farm in eastern Ohio. Schools were closed during the hunt. Among the animals killed were Bengal tigers, lions, black bears and grizzly bears. One grizzly bear, three leopards and two monkeys were captured and taken to the Columbus Zoo.

IT DONE

In his fifth season with the team, British soccer star David Beckham finally led the Los Angeles Galaxy to the MLS Cup championship. Beckham was second in the league in assists and L.A. capped off the year with a 1-0 victory over Houston in the championship game.

VY OLD LIGHT BULBS DIM

The incandescent light bulb — the bulb everyone has used since itwas invented by Thomas Edison —was going away. Stores began to only offer halogen incandescent, compact fluorescent and LED light bulbs. However, the U.S. Department of Energy was unable to enforce the new energy efficiency rules for most of 2012 because of a lack of money.

< BREAKING RECORDS

Audiences flocked to the theater in droves on opening weekend to check out Breaking Dawn, the final chapter in the Twilight series. The last installment in the vampire love story of Edward and Bella was made into two movies, with part one being released in the fall.

Vv MJ DOCTOR FOUND GUILTY

Michael Jackson’s doctor, Conrad Murray, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter inthe death of the famed singer. Jackson died ofpropofol intoxication, and testimony given during Murray’s trial showed the doctor gave Jackson propofol nearly every night for two months to help him sleep. Murray received the maximum sentence —four years in jail.

GROWING DEBT >

The ever-increasing U.S. debt was ahot topic. Amid the question of raising the debt limit, House Speaker John Boehner and President Barack Obama reached a deal on spending cuts, avoiding the possibility of the U.S. defaulting on its debt. Then bipartisan Congressional super committee was unable to agree on how to reduce the national debt.

The U.S. lost to Japan in the final match at the Women’s World Cup in Germany.

Twice the U.S. led with only minutes left, first in regulation and then in overtime, before Japan tied it with late goals. The Japanese then won the penalty kick shootout to win its first ever Women’s World

To protest corporate greed, thousands of people joined the Occupy Wall Street movement, which was organized in New York City and spread across the country.
