Interior lighting proposal for St. John’s cathedral in Paramatta, NSW

Facade lighting proposal for DFS Galleria Sydney

St. John’s Anglican Cathedral Heritage Lighting Parramatta

Co-contributors: Joanna Pan and Wenjie Wei

This project aims to redesign the interior lighting of the cathedral. The primary focus of this project is to replace the old pendant luminaire and highlight the heritage elements of the site.

Background: St. John’s Anglican Cathedral sits in the heart of Parramatta’s Centenary Square, its former town square and Governor Macquarie’s marketplace. St. John’s Cathedral, as Australia’s oldest church site and continuous Christian place of worship, has national significance and its history can be traced back to 1803 (NSW State Heritage Register, 2018)

Church

The cathedral itself was built in three main stages, St John’s Anglican Cathedral combines Victorian Romanesque style with an (earlier) pair of Old Colonial Gothic towers.

Site Observations & Issues

- Lofty hammerbeam roof - Brown timber ceilings in the main cathedral space - Sandstone walls are smooth faced and margined to the quoins, sparrow pecked to the main walls - Stained glass windows and items of historical significance displayed throughout the cathedral - A sense of grandeur - Little presence of daylight inside the space - Current pendant fixture does not match the interior of the space

Project Understanding 1.

To remove all existing lighting equipment and wiring.

2. 3.

Propose a new lighting design that enhances the prestige of the church and provides a visually comfortable environment. All new lighting to be considerate of the heritage fabric.

4.

Propose a new lighting design fit for purpose.

5.

Design and document new lighting installations, including the new DALI central lighting control system for the entire existing interior.

Lighting Principles 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

To create a visually striking lighting installation to highlight and accent key heritage elements and accent architectural elements. Increase surface illumination for high perceived brightness. Hierarchy of brightness to create spaces of contrast to allow breathing room for key feature to pop. Resolve lighting to a precision level to preserve heritage elements and mitigate chances of damage. All lighting fixtures to be concealed to allow the lighting effect to be the hero of the space. Digitally Addressed lighting interface for multiple pre-sets to be commissioned for easy day to day use and to cater for all modes and functions.

Technical Details Detail 01

Simpler shapes used in the design, similar to other Romanesque-style pendant lights

A quatrefoil is an element commonly found in Gothic architecture - it consists of four symmetrical lobes or petals & represents good luck. In Christianity, it symbolizes the four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Hollow RHS rod suspension to allow for reticulation to canopy Powder coat finish, color to be brass

Honeycomb louvre to prevent glare Fixture to be open to reduce unwanted bugs and ongoing maintenance to clean fixtures

6 rectangular PCBs (4 x 1W each) and 2 hexagonal PCBs (3 x 1W each) for indirect/direct light White acrylic Opal finish

Hollow core made from extruded aluminium for heat dissipation and to store drivers

Lighting Calculation

Safety in Design Statement The proposed design has integrated control measures within the design to eliminate and minimise risks to the health and safety of maintenance workers and end users throughout the life of the lighting installation within St John’s Anglican Cathedral Church. The following points have been considered: - High quality LED lighting to ensure a long lifespan of fixtures to reduce ongoing required maintenance. - Due to the grand nature of the site, lighting has been installed at a high level. However, it has been ensured that vertical access of high level fittings are to be maintained through scaffolding or vertical lifts. - DALI interface to future proof design to reduce need of ongoing adjustments. - Emergency lighting provides a level of visibility sufficient to enable exits, paths of travel to exits and any obstacles along a path of travel to an exit to be identified; and activates instantaneously upon the failure of an artificial lighting system, to the degree necessary. - To enable safe movement by everyone within the building
