Marlborough’s heritage is at crisis point say supporters who hope to save it from what they say is years of funding neglect. Funding for Marlborough schools’ long standing heritage education programme is being scrapped, leaving the future of the 25-year-old programme hanging in the balance. Worried members of the Marlborough Historical Society and the Heritage Education team have made a submission to Council’s Annual Plan process. While the submission is mainly concerned with the Marlborough Heritage Trust, it also covers council’s alleged neglect of the heritage sector. In a document seen by the Marlborough Weekly, members say they have concerns over recent council actions regarding both the Heritage Trust and Marlborough Museum, which saw long time executive Steve Austin lose his job. “The Council and the Trust are jointly committed to Marlborough’s heritage resources being enjoyed by present and future generations and intend to work in partnership to achieve that outcome,” the submission says.
