Mayday at sea sparks inquiry PAULA HULBURT

An official investigation into how a ferry was left stranded at sea with 800 passengers on board is underway. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has opened an inquiry into the loss of power experienced by the Interislander ferry Kaitaki on Saturday. Chief Investigator of Accidents, Naveen Kozhuppakalam, is appealing for passengers on board who have any video footage or photos to get in contact. Initial interviews have already begun as investigators work to uncover the circumstances which led to the ship issuing a mayday call. Kiwirail bosses yesterday (Monday) confirmed the ship will not be operating until they can be sure the fault will not happen
