To be a the new DepEd Secretary is not an easy task because it is the most crucial department for it holds the role of education, and to be chosen as one is a great honor indeed. But I do say, I have no objections for Sonny Angara to be tasked with this role, I might say I’m glad and proud for him and I think it safe for me to say that no one is prouder than the late Ed Angara for his son who is now known as the new Secretary of the Department of Education, Sonny Angara.

October 17-18 2024, five student journalists from the Teresian's Quill attended the District-Seminar Workshop for School Paper Adviser, Assistant School Paper Adviser and Student Journalists on School Publication, held at Loon Activity Center.

n a moment that has resonated across the nation, Juan Edgardo Sonny Manalang Angara, most popularly known Sonny Angara has stepped down from his seat as senate as he has been after 11 consecutive years and has officially taken the role as the new Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd).

Throughout his political career, Angara has consistently advocated educational reforms. His passion in improving the Philippine education has become clear in his legislative work and he has never failed to impress us with his outstanding deeds. “They used to say ‘Bullying – everyone goes through it, it’s a right of passage, it’s no big deal’ there was something fundamentally wrong with that kind of attitude “, with that statement, Angara authorized the Anti-Bullying Act 2013 (Republic Act 10627) which has helped many especially in educational institutions where bullying is proved to be quite rampant. One of Angara’s most heartwarming traits is his genuine connection with communities. He is not afraid nor shy to share his personal stories and inspirational messages to the people of our country. One of his most memorable interviews was about his late father which was not only the father of the great Sonny Angara but was once the Senate of the Philippines which was the infamous late Ed Angara. Sonny Angara looked up to his father, who could blame him late Ed was a great man indeed. Once Sonny was asked how he could differentiate himself from his father he eagerly replied “I don’t want to differentiate myself from my father, I want to be like my father, if all the legislators were like him then our country would be a better place” and if I might say I most certainly agree with these words. Sonny, following the steps of his late father has become a remarkable figure in our country, not only has he brought honor to the Angara family but he has also made all of us proud with his great efforts of improving our country.
