INNOVATE ESITATE? or

Forty years ago, artificial intelligence was a distant idea, something that sparked the imaginations of writers and filmmakers. It was a narrative that haunted science fiction novels and futuristic films. Today, AI has

moved beyond theory and is beginning to take over our everyday lives. It is reshaping our world, transforming what was once a dream into a reality we engage with daily Yet, as we grow more dependent on this change, public conversations shift between anticipation and concern, sparking a heated debate about whether this emergence is a revolution or a risk.

There'snodenyingthatAIbrings efficiency, creativity, and problem-solving capabilities to the table It has proven to be a crucial force in advancing healthcare, agriculture, and automation, while also boosting our economy We use it on our devices to navigate maps, find entertainment, and make convenient decisions The positive impact of AI across various industries is undeniable, reshaping how we operate and innovateinwaysthatcannotbe overlooked However, alongside its benefits, AI also poses risks and uncertainties One major concern is the possibility that futuregenerationsmaybecome completely dependent on AI, leading to laziness and a reluctance to learn essential skills Anotherseriousissueisjob displacement As AI automates manytaskscurrentlyperformed byhumans, itcouldforcepeople out of their jobs, increasing unemployment rates In fact, accordingtoanApril2023report from Goldman Sachs, the equivalent of 300 million fulltime jobs could be lost to automation. Furthermore, the line between human and machine control is becoming increasinglyblurred, raisingfears of AI surpassing human intelligence and gaining control overtheworld

WILL IT BECOME HUMANITY'S GREATEST INNOVATION OR OUR BIGGESTMISTAKE?

Despite these concerns, we shouldn’t let fear dominate our view of AI This technology has the potential to solve pressing issues like climate change, global hunger, and poverty We canharnessittobenefitsociety as a whole, but the key lies in how we choose to develop and useit Wemustworktogetherto establishpoliciesandregulatory frameworks that make AI align withourownaspirations Thiswill ensurethatAIremainsatoolfor development rather than unprecedentedoppression As AI becomes more integrated into our lives, it is up to us to maintain the balance between innovationandresponsibility We can either watch in fear as it evolves beyond our control, or joinhandswithitforthegreater good We must remember that AI cannot control humanity unless we allow it to; only then can we coexist with AI while avoidingitspotentialdangers

In this day and age, AI doesn't just help us become better humans—it helps us definewhatitmeans to be human. This is athrillingmomentin history, andtherules are being written as we play, so let’s step up and shape the narrative. The only question that remains is: are you ready to take on the challenge?

But while these online spaces have a few advantages, there are also many side effects that can make your life take a turn for the worse

Online gambling is certainly a dangerous ruse, but there are also ways to prevent it The solution to controlling online gambling begins before the addiction even develops it starts with avoiding gambling itself. We must avoid online casinos as much as possible if we want to remove the problem by its root If onehasalreadydevelopedaserious addiction, then trying psychological therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), can be beneficial However, rehabilitation of suchaddictionshasbeenprovento be difficult, so it's better to steer clearofit

INFLATION IN THE PHILIPPINES

Inflation in the Philippines pertains to the significant rise in the prices of essential goods and services, which has been an ongoing challenge affecting the affordability of everyday necessities for the population When prices increase at a rapid pace, it raises concerns among policymakers and can also lead to unease among citizens who areworkingtofulfilltheirbasicneeds

In the Philippines, we are witnessing a concerning rise in the prices of essential goods, including food and toys, which is commonly referred to as inflation This escalation can be attributed to a variety of factors, such as disruptions in the supply chain, heightened consumer demand, and fluctuations in global oil prices Given these challenges, it is my hope that the governmentisactivelypursuingstrategiesto stabilize prices and provide support for vital commodities like rice and bread, thereby ensuringthatbasicnecessitiesremainwithin reachforallcitizens

A significant contributor to the escalating pricesinthePhilippinesisthedepreciationof the peso, our national currency As I have come to understand, when the peso loses value, thecostsofimportedgoods including vitalfoodsuppliesandbelovedtoys tendto increase

This rise in prices can impose a considerable burdenonourfamilies, makingitincreasingly challengingforthemtosecuretheessentials ofdailyliving

In the Philippines, when we encounter a substantialriseinprices, itpresentsamyriad of challenges for all parties involved As expensesincrease, consumersoftenfindtheir purchasing power diminished, resulting in a significant decline in spending This scenario, whichIhavebothexperiencedandobserved, canadverselyaffectthevitalityoflocalstores and businesses Moreover, as production costs escalate, companies may be compelled to raise their prices, potentially perpetuating a cycle of inflation that places additionalstrainonoureconomy

In summary, I believe that the challenge of inflation in the Philippines is a complex issue that necessitates a careful and holistic approach Itisimperativeforbothconsumers and the government to vigilantly observe price fluctuations and implement strategic measures to alleviate the financial burdens faced by the citizens By deepening our understanding of the underlying factors driving price increases and responding with informed and effective actions, the Philippines can pave the way toward cultivatingarobustandstableeconomythat benefitsallitspeople

POPULARITY OVER PROFICIENCY

Influencers Filing For Candidacy

With great power comes great responsibility The responsibilities of a political candidate are a burden one must be brave and educated enough to shoulder; it is a position where every statement made and every action taken holds the power to affect countlesspeople'slives AsthenextPhilippine election draws near, the topic of candidacy becomes a hot topic on every countryfolks tongue once more Who are the brave and educated? Who are the people most fit to exercise such authority? We live in a country where filing a certificate of candidacy is as easy as snapping your fingers Because of this, almost anyone can become a candidate, regardless of their capabilities andlackthereof

Today, thereisanongoingtrendofinfluential figures trying to snatch political positions, sparking countless debates all over the internet The general public has begun questioning the competence of these celebrities, calling out those who are eyeing this field of work merely for the sake of relevance

One of the most frequently raised concerns regarding this issue is the influencers' lack of knowledge and experience to proficiently handle various political issues Because they are primarily powered by their wealth and popularity, there is also a possibility that future campaigns may become mediadriven,

Dutertes war on drug campaign has been highly marked by controversial and significant human rights concern during his administration Proponents argue it was necessary to combat rampant drug trafficking and addiction in the Philippines, the approach has led to widespread allegations of extrajudicial killings and violence, undermining the rule of law Balancing public safety with human rights remains a crucial debate in assessing its overallimpact

The socio-economic impacts, including the marginalization of vulnerable communities, further complicate the issue Instead of addressingtherootcausesofaddiction, such asmentalhealthissuesandlackofaccessto education, the focus on punitive measures has often exacerbated the problem The harmful consequences for children on Dutertes anti-drug campaign goes beyond the immediate violence of the raids Many suffer psychological distress after witnessing thekillingofalovedone

In conclusion, a more balanced strategy that combines law enforcement and prioritizes public health, rehabilitation, and community engagement may be necessary for sustainable solutions to drug-related problems in the country This shift could reduce stigma, improve public health, and allow for more productive discussions about drug use and addiction as complex social issuesratherthanpurelycriminalones.

further blurring the line between politics and entertainment Manyoftheseinfluencersalso use phrases such as "wanting to make a contribution" or "wanting to help the people" as a way to justify their entry into politics Whilefanstakethisasapositivecause, most Filipinos dismiss their altruistic promises and view them as veneers for self-serving motives Celebritycandidatesaren'talwaysa bad choice some are actually wellintentioned and perform well in politics However, italsoisn'tatypicalfortheseactions tobemetwithskepticism

As a student, Im glad to be on the same page as the majority of Filipinos regarding thisissue Whenitcomestopolitics, influence doesn't equate to competence I believe that good leadership doesn't stem from the contributions one can make as a politician, but rather from the contributions one has made without needing to become a politician AsFilipinos, itisourresponsibilityto look for this quality in our candidates The futureofourcountryisuptous, soweshould take it upon ourselves to vote wisely to choose individuals who best represent proud Filipinoswillingtodoanythingandeverything fortheirnation.g

FORTIFYING THE PHILIPPINES:

A Resilient Future Against Disasters and Climate Change

The Department of Science and

It has been estimated that there are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on Earth but there are more atoms in one grain of sand than there are stars in the universe

Plants know when they are being eaten

At least half of Earth's oxygen comes from the ocean, not trees.

Technology (DOST), the European Union (EU) have officially launched the CoPhil or National Copernicus Capacity Support Action Programme for the Philippines in cooperation with PhilSA. The programme is expected to be a significant contributor towards mainstreaming disaster preparedness and climate change resilience at the national

The European Union is contributing €10 million to this project, which could serve as a "gateway" for such programs in other ASEAN nations.

Copernicus is an EU programme that monitors Earth constantly with a number of satellites known as Sentinels. These satellites gather essential environmental and climate information that are already being shared with the Philippine Space Agency This helps the country identify where its most vulnerable areas are, understand what risks they face and how these change with climate change to be able to do better planning when it comes to disaster management. If Typhoon Kristine had ever battered remote villages, satellite images would have already been deployed to monitor them They are also being used for observing land movement on marine and ground movements as well.

By October 17, during the launch event, EU Ambassador to the Philippines Massimo Santoro said that this partnershipisimportant."Itestablishedthefoundationsof ourpartnershipinthedigitalsphere.”

This is a great leap forward for the Philippines in addressing climate change and natural disaster phenomena.

Black Cat’s “Bad Luck” Leads to Discovery

of an Unknown Virus

It is known to every superstition that a black cat brings bad luck. However, Pepper is different. Who would have known that a cat can lead to the discovery of unheard infectious disease-the jeilongvirus?

Pepper was an ordinary all-black shorthaired cat who is skilled with hunting. But on Thursday, 31st of October, Gianesville, Florida, his owner John Lednicky Ph.D., a microbiologist was in total shock when his pet brought home a dead mouse on his feet. At first, he susepected that the mouse carried deer mulepox disease as it was the common to rodents. The University of Florida’s laboratory results says, however, that the mouse caught by Pepper carries the first jeilongvirus discovered in the United States.

A jeilongvirus is a type of paramyxovirus, genetically mutated in Africa, Europe, South America, and Asia (mainly in central China). The virus is said to infect mammals, reptiles, birds and fish, and can also cause serious illness in humans. Rodents, such as the cotton mouse, are typical reservoirs but are somehow unusual. It’s a skeleton key of sorts, capable of breaking into cells from multiple species, including humans, monkeys, rodents and bats.

The discovery led by Lednicky was seen in the microscope with cells merging into giant multi-

nucleated structures called syncytia, developed into bubble-like vacuoles in their cytoplasm, and eventually die The research team tested the virus to thirteen different cell lines from various species, including the human lung and cervical cells, monkey kidney cells, hamster cells, and even bat lung cells The jeilongvirus successfully infected most of the cell types but it was different to every specific cell It mostly infected the human, monkey, and rodent cells.

The team noted that there is nothing to worry about with the jeilongvirus. The virus may cause vomiting, muscle aches, fever, headaches, atypical pneumonia, and encephalitis same as the Nipah virus (NiV) “We were not anticipating a virus of this sort, and the discovery reflects the realization that many viruses that we don’t know about circulate in animals that live in close proximity to humans And indeed, many more would be discovered,” said Emily DeRuyter, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Environmental and Global Health and Lednicky’s mentee.

Pepper, the black cat, made a stunning discovery to every scientist and encouraged researchers to hold caution in testing necessary understanding on the pontential impact of viruses on both pets and human.

"Brushstrokes of the Soul: A Tribute to Van Gogh"

Just like Van Gogh, my heart beats for the brush, All the world a canvas, vibrant, alive, and lush. Yearning for beauty in every shade and hue, Art speaks a language known only to the few. Never bound by rules, nor confined by space, Nurturing dreams that only colors can trace.

Vivid strokes that dance with emotion's grace, Every detail captures the stars’ embrace. Longing to paint the skies that sing with light, A vision that burns brightly in the quiet night.

Swirling landscapes born from soul’s desire, Creating a world where passion sets the fire. Onward, I paint with love, like Van Gogh's flame entire.

”The

Silent Cry of a Broken Heart“

I thought that time would dull the ache, That distance meant I’d start to heal, The echoes of moments, soft whispers, now fade, But the memory of you, love, will never fade.

No distance dims the light of those old days, Where love was simple and we were our best, Where in your eyes, I found my place, A world of warmth, a gentle space

If you could hear this heart’s quiet cry, Would you turn back or just walk by?

Time has passed, yet here I stand, With open heart and empty hands.

If fate were kinder and hearts could heal, I’d show you all I still feel, So I carry this love, though it tears me in two A part of me always will belong to you.

"Old enough to be young"

Adolescence is an ironic virtue, one is gifted an hourglass of golden youth, one is praised to have wits hard to boot, yet one can also be troubled, similar to you

You are expected to act like an adult, yet you are treated no more than an ignorant child, freedom restricted, expectations elevated, as a result, immaturity, curiosity, feelings and emotions run wild

Despite all that adolescence is an indispensable time in our life, a time of understanding, maturing, loving, improving and realizing, even though you have come to be a bit broken and weak, our time as an adolescent is not always melancholic.
