The Sport of Kings The glamorous equine sport of polo was first brought to Sotogrande in the 1960’s and with it came its parties. In 1971, the inaugural Golden Cup was played, and a local legend was born. The tradition of polo continues to gather momentum as thousands of spectators attend the unique Grand Slam International Polo Tournament at Santa Maria Polo Club to watch world famous players compete on Mediterranean shores. After five years, top-ranked polo player in the world, Adolfo Cambiaso, is making his spectacular return as Sotogrande hosts the Tournament’s 50th edition from July 26th - August 28th.

The founding principles of Sotogrande were clear: laid-back elegance for family and friends in a wonderful expanse of natural beauty on Andalucía’s sun-stripped southern coast. When Joseph McMicking and his wife Mercedes discovered this corner of Spain in 1962, they instinctively knew it was the picture-perfect venue for their exclusive residential resort. Sixty years on, those same principles remain at the heart of Sotogrande and nowhere more so than at La Reserva Club, the magnificent ‘next chapter’ in the resort’s long history. The inspiration for La Reserva, explains Marc Topiol, the current Chairman of Sotogrande, was to create a 21st Century version of that original Beach Club. “Heritage is the foundation of all we do,” he explains. “The fact that Sotogrande has been here for sixty years truly sets us apart. The concept of creating a club for sophisticated people, somewhere to live freely, a place of luxurious simplicity with a bohemian-chic style, that’s what drove the McMicking family and what still drives us today. A home at Sotogrande has never been purely because of our iconic golf courses. It’s about the entire lifestyle package.”

As La Reserva’s masterplan got underway in 2015, there was one major issue to address. The vision was an inland integrated community, 40 square kilometres of natural beauty encompassing stand-out facilities and intimate residential neighbourhoods, a resort within a resort offering the ultimate privileged lifestyle. But if it was to remain true to the essence of the original club, it had to have a beach. For Mr Topiol, there was only one solution.

“We brought the beach to the hills,” he says. “We came up with this crazy idea and after a three-year process, we did just that. I insisted that the sand did not just edge the water but continued throughout, so that when you walk into the lagoon you feel the sand under your toes. It’s part of our determination to be truly authentic in all we do. We use the finest sand from Cadiz so when you are swimming, as the sunlight reflects hazily through the water, it perfectly mimics the sea.”

Sotogrande’s legacy began when self-made millionaire and philanthropist Joseph Rafael McMicking had a vision to build a development that would be based around friendship and getting active in the Great Outdoors. Attracted by the ‘low key’ lifestyle that avoided the gaze of cameras in the likes of St Tropez, famous residents in the 1960s included the president of the First National City Bank in New York, George Moore. An influential and popular character, he brought along divas and powerful friends such as Jackie and Aristotle Onassis, opera singer Maria Callas and the politician, Spiro Agnew. Soon Sotogrande was awash with an impressive collection of famous faces and household names, all basking in this glorious pocket of Mediterranean life.

“ A sun-kissed community bound in their pursuit of the joie de vivre ” In the 1970s, the American society photographer Slim Aarons was famous for his pictures of the rich and famous at play. He once remarked that celebrities invited him to their parties “because they knew I wouldn’t hurt them. I was one of them.” As a destination where nobility and celebrity rubbed shoulders, Sotogrande offered rich pickings to Aarons. His ‘poolside’ shots of 1975 captured a unique slither of the Sotogrande society, with sun-tanned bodies lazing by crystal-blue pools surrounded by clipped jade green lawns. The ’80s and ‘90s brought sailing, golf and polo to the area with the Ryder Cup and the Real Club de Maritimo de Sotogrande (RCMS) transforming the destination into a hub of sporting legend. Throughout the decades, members of European royalty, sports stars and Hollywood’s A-listers have been spotted among the signature glamour of Soto’s polo matches, regattas and golf tournaments. The next chapter of La Reserva Club continues McMicking’s legacy towards envisioning an Andalucian paradise. Interview with Paola Zobel

As a member of Sotogrande’s founding family, Paola Zobel’s life has been fully shaped by the resort. Sotogrande holds the happiest memories for international businesswoman Paola Zobel. It is where she celebrated her birthday every year throughout childhood, where she was married five years ago and where both her own children were born. Today, despite travelling for over half the year, it is quite simply the place she and her husband, Argentine polo professional Santiago Laborde, call home. “Sotogrande is so significant for me,” Paola says. “Back in the 1960s my family conceived Sotogrande as an exclusive community of beautiful homes, creating it from absolutely nothing. As a child I spent a month here every summer, meeting up with family at my grandfather’s home in the days when the car journey from Malaga airport took three hours. That access has improved dramatically but even as the infrastructure upgrades, the heart of the resort remains the same.” Paola is part of Sotogrande’s modern-day success. She owns highly-rated restaurant Cancha II and runs her father’s Ayala Polo Club, where her ambitious plans include extending the season with tournaments from Easter to October. What makes a perfect Sotogrande day for Paola? It would begin with some exercise, perhaps a trek through the Natural Park, before heading to La Reserva Beach and then an afternoon of polo,” she says. “In the evening, a drink at Trocadero on the beach before meeting family and friends at a house party. I want people to feel the same passion for Sotogrande as I do. There really is nowhere quite as special.”

Whilst Mus arrives at his projects with an open-mind and flexibility, he stays true to his word by ensuring that “landscape must have a natural relationship and enough humility to respect a place, not change it”. Sotogrande is a genuine paradise for those that love their golf. There are few landscapes anywhere in the world, where so many highly ranked courses can be found within a few minutes drive. Situated amongst stunning countryside some 30 minutes south of Marbella, Andalucia’s Sotogrande plays host to the four glorious courses of Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, The San Roque Club, the celebrated Real Club Valderrama and the immaculate La Reserva Club alongside Club de Golf La Canada and the much underated Club de Golf Almenara. The area began its transformation into an exclusive international community by the Filipino-American businessman, Joseph McMicking, from 1963. The first course to be built was Real Club de Golf Sotogrande in 1964 and was the first to be designed in Europe by Robert Trent Jones. It has been recently upgraded, and the fairways of this private members’ club are lined by cork, eucalyptus and pine trees and the perfect greens well protected by bunkers and water. It is a superb challenge that is made even more enjoyable by its sophisticated clubhouse with its excellent food. Valderrama needs little introduction since its starring role in the Seve Ballesteros’ 1997 Ryder Cup. Often regarded as the premier course in Spain, it is a privilege to play, and is one of only two European gold courses to be awarded Audubon status that’s aims to conserve and restore natural eco-systems. Very much a private club, where tee times can be available to visitors, the course is immaculate, the rough punishing and the experience altogether majestic. The clubhouse is usually quite quiet with exquisite service and an atmosphere that reflects all the great names of the sport who have walked its rooms, marched its fairways and soaked up the memories from the balcony. The third course in the impressive sporting quartet is the elegant and increasingly highly ranked La Reserva Club. Set at the highest point in Sotogrande and boasting one of the best restaurants in the area and certainly the finest service, it has been built around two valleys, carved into the hillsides with many remarkable views across the rich landscape to the Mediterranean. A long course designed by Cabell B Robinson, the fairways are generous and the greens large and its reputation is growing and, in many people’s eyes, La Reserva now gives its neighbours a run for its money as the best golfing experience in the area.

Situado en un paisaje impresionante a unos 30 minutos al sur de Marbella, Sotogrande acoge cuatro magníficos campos de golf: el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, el San Roque Club, el célebre Real Club Valderrama y el inmaculado La Reserva Club junto al Club de Golf La Cañada y el Club de Golf Almenara, un campo de golf no debidamente valorado. La zona comenzó su transformación en una comunidad internacional exclusiva gracias al empresario filipinoestadounidense Joseph McMicking a partir de 1963. El primer campo que se construyó fue el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande en 1964 y fue el primero en ser diseñado en Europa por Robert Trent Jones. Es un club privado donde los horarios de los tee times pueden estar disponibles para los visitantes, el campo es impecable, el reto es duro y la experiencia en conjunto majestuosa. La casa club suele ser bastante tranquila con un servicio exquisito y un ambiente que refleja todos los grandes nombres del deporte que han caminado por sus salas, recorrido sus calles y empapado el lugar de recuerdos. El tercer campo del impresionante cuarteto deportivo es el elegante y cada vez más valorado La Reserva Club. Ubicado en el punto más alto de Sotogrande y con uno de los mejores restaurantes de la zona y sin duda el mejor servicio, se ha construido alrededor de dos valles, excavados en las laderas con vistas extraordinarias del rico paisaje del Mediterráneo. Un campo largo diseñado por Cabell B. Robinson, cuyas calles son generosas y los greens grandes. Con una reputación que está creciendo, a los ojos de muchas personas, La Reserva Club ahora ofrece a sus residentes la mejor experiencia golfística de la zona.

3. Real Club de Golf Sotogrande

The final club in the fantastic four is The San Roque Club. Situated in the foothills of Sierra Bermeja Mountains, the undulating and genuinely challenging Old Course was designed by Dave Thomas and Tony Jacklin and more recently, the New Course by Perry Dye. The latter is regarded as a genuine triumph and provides stunning views to the sea, whilst providing a fun and engaging examination for beginners or the low handicaps alike. The Old Course has recently undergone extensive renovation and has now reopened, alongside a totally refurbished clubhouse that was once the home of the famous sherry dynasty, Domecq.

The whole golfing scene at Sotogrande is incomplete without mentioning the quartet’s less celebrated neighbours. Club de Golf La Canada has often been referred to as a nice surprise, whilst the newly renovated Club de Golf Almenara is often the subject a considerable debate, but it is probably underappreciated simply due to the sheer eminence of its neighbours. However, this year it won’t go unnoticed and what is indisputable is that for anyone with a passion for golf, there are few places in the world in which you can ruin so many walks in such a small place!

SO/ Hotels & Resorts is part of world-leading hotel group Accor who are introducing the brand to Spain for the first time. SO/’s focus on cuttingedge design has seen previous collaborations with fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld and Christian Lacroix and at SO/ Sotogrande they offer up a unique interpretation on unconventional luxury. “Our concept was to create a contemporary cortijo,” outlines Roberto Roca, CEO of Sotogrande. “A cortijo is a traditional Andalucían working farm, a small village in effect. What we have done is combine the traditional elements of the existing building, the red tiled roof and wide walls for example, and remodelled them for modern living. Outside we have added smaller buildings throughout the grounds, such as our individual spa treatment pavilions beside the golf course.” The design is rooted in Andalucía’s magnificent heritage where the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Arabs all left their mark. The contemporary interiors at SO/ Sotogrande reference this diversity with Moroccan-inspired tiling, detailed fretwork and sweeping arches. The 152 rooms, 36 of them suites, feature shades of ochre and sand with whitewashed beamed ceilings and plenty of warm wood and wicker but it’s in the public spaces that Cortés’ audacious design truly sparks. She plays with jewel-coloured beading on canopies, glossy green tiles behind bars festooned in ferns and neat-as-a-pin geometric patterns on floors and walls. It’s a majestic mix of tradition and contemporary style.

Q1: Can you explain your thought process behind designing the uniforms here at SO/ Sotogrande? With the uniforms I wanted to print the combined essence of Dolores Cortés and of SO/ Sotogrande. It has not been especially difficult because there are common elements to both, such as creativity, the search for differentiation and exclusivity. We have designed the uniforms to achieve an ergonomic design which is suitable for day-to-day tasks but at the same time present unique, bold, and creative design accents. To achieve this, we have created various exclusive shapes and patterns particular to the hotel, crafting designs which differ from the standard to reflect and transmit the unique personality of this very special hotel.

P1: ¿Puede explicar el proceso que hay detrás del diseño de los uniformes para SO/ Sotogrande? Con los uniformes quería imprimir la esencia combinada de Dolores Cortés y de SO/ Sotogrande. No ha sido especialmente difícil porque hay elementos comunes a ambos, como la creatividad, la búsqueda de la diferenciación y la exclusividad. Hemos creado los uniformes para lograr un diseño ergonómico que sea adecuado para las tareas del día a día, pero al mismo tiempo presente acentos de diseño únicos, atrevidos y creativos. Para lograrlo, hemos ideado varias formas y patrones exclusivos propios del hotel, elaborando diseños que se diferencian del estándar para reflejar y transmitir la personalidad única de este hotel tan especial.

Q2: How did you incorporate the spirit of Sotogrande into the designs? The soul of the hotel is a revolutionary Cortijo. Based on this idea as the centre of inspiration, just like when we create our collections, we have taken three iconic elements of Andalusian culture: the arch of the patios, the carnation flower, and the Fan. We have evolved them towards minimalist lines and worked in a cheerful chromatic range typical of the environment. At the same time, we have immersed ourselves in the festive, rebellious, and passionate spirit of Andalusia and in the exclusive atmosphere of Sotogrande, with its exuberant nature. We have sought to integrate all these elements, providing an urban and modern touch at the same time.

P2: ¿Cómo incorporaste el espíritu de Sotogrande en los diseños? El alma del hotel es un cortijo revolucionario. Partiendo de esta idea como centro de inspiración, al igual que cuando creamos nuestras colecciones, hemos tomado tres elementos emblemáticos de la cultura andaluza: el arco de los patios, el clavel y el abanico. Hemos aplicado líneas minimalistas y trabajado con una alegre gama cromática típica del entorno. Christoph Can you explain a little bit about your culinary inspiration and influences? My culinary inspirations depend on where I am in the world. In Sotogrande, there is a lot of sun, and plenty of fish. When a cook lives in a place and goes shopping, he gets a lot of inspiration from it. We have to make sure that when customers eat, they are really connected with the plate and experience that wow factor. In Sotogrande the wow factor is created through exceptional products. What does Sotogrande mean to you? Sotogrande represents, above all, my new life as my wife and I left everything to come here. The bottom line is we eat every day, and when you have a gorgeous meal, you wake up in the morning and say “Wow, I’ll eat yesterday’s dish again”. This is why I enjoy making bespoke dishes and appealing to everyone’s taste buds: nowadays we forget to impress our customers. In my old restaurant, there was a phrase in the manager’s office: “Here the boss is the customer”. It is in this sense that tailor-made food really adds value.

What are some of your favourite things to do and places to visit at Sotogrande? In Sotogrande you really have an exceptional lifestyle: the view, different beaches, different styles of catering, the golf clubs, the motorway, the calm and the frenzy: it’s all there. I really fell in love with this place. And when you want to go crazy, you get in the car and go to Marbella. Heading to the Rock of Gibraltar in the morning and walking along the beach is a real pleasure; it’s exceptionally quiet and beautiful.
