INSURTECH START-UP OF THE YEAR

ClaimsGateway

FINALISTS

• myVal Pty Limited

• Five Sigma

• CelsiusPro (Aust) Pty Ltd

• Curium

• FreightInsure

Another new contender in this year’s winning cohort, ClaimsGateway is congratulated for taking out Insurtech Start-up of the Year, a milestone that reflects both innovation and impact. Launched in 2023 as an independent platform under Risk Management Gateway Pty Ltd, ClaimsGateway was designed with brokers and claims teams to transform how claims are managed — bringing clarity, efficiency, and consistency to a complex process.

The judges highlighted the company’s thoughtful approach to solving a clear industry challenge: outdated systems, fragmented data and inconsistent adherence to best practice.

From its earliest days, ClaimsGateway focused on listening to real users, iterating rapidly and refining its workflows to address these challenges. In just its first year, the platform processed over 32,000 claims, made more than 14,000 payments, and established real-time reporting and compliance alerts, demonstrating measurable results in efficiency and customer experience.

ClaimsGateway’s agile, user-centred approach stands out. By prioritising product development over early sales, the team ensured a solution that genuinely meets user needs. The platform quickly expanded

beyond its Motor Vehicle MVP to support multiple lines of business and integrated with enterprise systems, improving visibility, reducing overdue tasks, and helping brokers and insurers make informed decisions.

The impact has been tangible: claims processing times fell from 70 days to just 11, overdue tasks dropped dramatically, and claim volumes decreased as a result of better risk management. Early client feedback reflects high satisfaction, while internal measures show improved compliance and stronger broker engagement.

This award recognises more than technology; it celebrates a team committed to thoughtful innovation, collaboration, and measurable outcomes. ClaimsGateway’s first-year achievements show the potential of purpose-driven insurtech to make meaningful change — and the judges are delighted to celebrate its well-earned success.

From the widely cited Home Insurance Affordability Report to its trailblazing Qualitative Climate Scenario Analysis service, Finity continues to shape industry conversations at the highest levels. Judges were impressed by the firm’s commitment to futurefocused skills, noting that 50% of its workforce completed AI-related training in the past year, embedding new capabilities into everyday work.

Finity’s approach to client relationships is equally distinctive. Rather than relying on surveys, the Managing Director personally interviews the CEOs of client organisations, gaining deep, actionable insights. A remarkable 75% of clients return year after year, and free events like the Solutions Showcase

provide opportunities for knowledge-sharing and collaboration across the sector.

Innovation thrives within Finity’s open, nonhierarchical culture, where ideas from every level are encouraged and tested. This year saw faster software development, improved tender outcomes, and the launch of Classifi, an AI-powered product designed to help clients unlock new efficiencies.

The firm’s community contribution is noteworthy, from its pro-bono renewable energy and climate resilience work with Aboriginal communities to its ongoing media engagement, helping demystify complex insurance issues for the wider public.

With a combination of rigorous analytics, genuine client care, and a deep commitment to industry progress, Finity has once again shown why it is the benchmark for professional services excellence in insurance.

In 2024, Swiss Re launched Career Returnees, a global initiative welcoming highly skilled professionals back into the workforce after career breaks. Mental health training remains a priority: 31 employees, or 11% of the workforce, completed accredited Mental Health First Aid courses, equipping both staff and clients to better manage mental health claims and build industry-wide resilience.

• Damien Coates, DUAL ANZ

• Frank Dodwell, Marsh McLennan

• Glenn Ross, MECON Insurance, UAA Group

Robert Kelly AM’s extraordinary career in insurance spans over five decades, yet it is his vision, resilience, and humanity that truly distinguish him as a leader. Cofounding Steadfast Group in 1996 with the belief that “if you want to survive, you can’t become 43 islands – you have to become one,” Robert transformed a network of 43 Australian brokers into a global enterprise comprising 645 brokerages across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United States. The group also includes 29 underwriting agencies, a specialty wholesale broker in London, and offices in Greece and Paris. Steadfast holds a 60% stake in UnisonSteadfast, a global broking network with 295 members across 113 countries. The company also owns nine complementary businesses and operates an innovative technology arm. Listed on the ASX for 12 years, Steadfast has a market capitalisation of $7 billion and controls $25 billion in gross written premium.

Robert’s journey was not without challenge. Early setbacks, including a failed business that left him working as a taxi driver and cleaner, only strengthened his resolve. His return to the industry through Delaney Kelly Golding Insurance Brokers, alongside his leadership at Steadfast, laid the foundation for decades of innovation, resilience, and growth.

A champion of ethical leadership, Robert instilled transparency and professional standards across the

Steadfast network through initiatives such as the Broker Code of Conduct and the Client Trading Platform (SCTP), now transacting over $1.4 billion in gross written premium. His entrepreneurial drive also delivered INSIGHT, a broker management system supporting more than 7,500 users, demonstrating his foresight in harnessing technology to empower brokers and their SME clients.

Beyond business success, Robert is celebrated for his generosity and advocacy. He is a Director of the Steadfast Foundation, supporting vulnerable communities, and a champion of diversity, equity, and inclusion. His initiatives have advanced gender equality, First Nations opportunities, and family-friendly workplace practices, creating a culture where people can thrive authentically.

ANZIIF LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Ian Carr, Insurance Advisernet

FINALISTS

• Cameron McCullagh, EML Group

• Damien Coates, DUAL ANZ

• Frank Dodwell, Marsh McLennan

• Glenn Ross, MECON Insurance, UAA Group

Ian Carr’s journey is one of vision, determination, and lasting impact. Born in Hobart in 1956, Ian began with humble beginnings and went on to redefine what was possible in the insurance industry across Australia and New Zealand. His career, spanning nearly five decades, reflects both entrepreneurial courage and deep humanity.

Starting in the early 1970s with Australian Fire and General, Ian quickly demonstrated the drive and insight that would shape his career. He held senior roles in some of Australia’s largest brokerages before launching Insurance Advisernet in 1996 — a bold idea conceived at his kitchen table. With no template to follow, Ian pioneered the Authorised Representative model, giving advisers ownership, support, and freedom to focus on what mattered most: providing thoughtful, expert advice.

From that seed grew one of the most successful networks in the industry, now empowering over 270 practices and forming the core of a $1.8 billion business. More than a commercial success, Ian’s model set new standards of professionalism and became the benchmark for others to follow.

His contributions, however, extend far beyond business.

A passionate mentor and advocate, Ian has nurtured generations of professionals, championed the role of technology and advice, and helped advance industry

collaboration through bodies such as AIMS. His leadership has ensured the sector remains vibrant, inclusive, and forward-looking.

Equally striking is Ian’s humility. Despite all he has achieved, his focus has always remained on people — supporting advisers, colleagues, industry partners, and charitable causes. Since 2015, the Insurance Advisernet Foundation, reflecting Ian’s ethos of giving back, has donated more than $3.5 million to Australian charities, contributing over $400,000 annually to communities in need.

For his vision, generosity, and enduring leadership, ANZIIF proudly presents Ian Carr with the Lifetime Achievement Award. His legacy is one of innovation, compassion, and commitment to building not just stronger businesses, but stronger communities.

Congratulations, Ian — and thank you for everything you have given to our industry.
