So you want to change the world?

Located on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, in the small beach town of Cabarete, The Mariposa Center for Girls is the largest safe space for girls across Latin America and the Caribbean. Mariposa provides direct service to at-risk Dominican and Haitian girls ages 7-24 through 40+ programs, including academic enrichment, music and arts, dance, theater, athletics, empowerment skills, health & wellness, job training, tutoring, and so much more.
Public and most private schools are half day sessions in the Dominican Republic. Mariposa program participants spend the other half of their day on our campus. We also provide weekend programming, excursions and summer camps.
Our Mission: We create sustainable solutions to end poverty by educating girls to become empowered young women and by inspiring the international community to join the Global Girl Movement.

Our Vision: To create a model that can be adapted around the world for a holistic girls’ education and empowerment program to end generational poverty.

The Volunteer Institute at Mariposa is a unique immersive program that combines language and cultural exchange with meaningful professional and personal development opportunities. Interns and fellows serve as active members of the program team, providing direct support across a variety of programs including academics, health and wellness, sports, arts, music, and mentorship.
Volunteers are matched with roles that align with their skills, experience, and interests while also being encouraged to expand their abilities through new challenges and hands-on learning opportunities. Additional responsibilities may include supporting grant writing, fundraising initiatives, event coordination, communications, and administrative operations. These positions are ideal for adaptable, mission-driven individuals who are passionate about youth development, cross-cultural collaboration, and community impact.

Interns and fellows are expected to work 40+ hours a week, Monday through Friday 8am-4:30pm. Occasional field trips, evening activities, special intensive programs or community events will require additional hours.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
• Direct mentoring and tutoring of at-risk girls ages 7-18+
• Lead personally designed workshops in areas like theatre, water sports, dance, art, music, gardening, cooking, sewing, and more
• Provide administrative and development support for the organization
• Group activities, excursions, professional development workshops, and community engagement
• Occasional field trips, evening activities, and community events requiring additional hours

An internship or fellowship with Mariposa is a dynamic experience, filled with moments that will stay with you and inform how you engage with the world. You learn through hands-on work, face challenges and, along the way, you build skills that stay with you long after you leave:
• Communicating across language and culture
• Leading with empathy, patience, and adaptability
• Navigating real-world challenges with limited resources
• Understanding grassroots development from the inside
• Thinking critically, acting creatively, and responding in real time
For more than a decade, interns and fellows have left Mariposa’s programs with highly improved Spanish language skills, broadened world views, and a clearer understanding of their own passions. You will build relationships that last a lifetime, push yourself outside of your comfort zone, and gain a meaningful understanding of what it means to work with our Mariposa community.

Whether you are a college or graduate student exploring education or global development, or a professional looking to engage more deeply in nonprofit or community-based work, the strongest participants are those who:
• Are curious, adaptable, and genuinely passionate about educating and empowering girls.
• Feel comfortable working across cultures and building relationships with the local community.
• Enjoy working collaboratively and being part of a dynamic team.
• Understand that working conditions may be challenging and lacking certain conveniences and require flexibility and patience.
• Are adaptable, emotionally resilient, and prepared for the realities of working in an underserved community, where poverty, trauma, and limited resources can create challenging but deeply meaningful volunteer experiences.
This program asks a lot of each individual, and it gives just as much in return.

While Spanish fluency is not required, it is strongly encouraged. Proficiency in French or Haitian Creole is also highly valued and considered an asset.
We are not able to provide translation support for specialized roles.

The Mariposa team has hosted hundreds of volunteers from around the world and, together, we have created signature and unique Internship & Fellowship programs designed for individuals seeking life-changing opportunities at the grassroots level.
Please note: Interns and Fellows must be 21 years of age or older unless accompanied by a parent, guardian or academic supervisor.

Mariposa fellows typically arrive early September for a week of in-depth orientation with Mariposa staff–touring the town of Cabarete, neighboring communities, local schools, and generally adjusting to the new environment. Fellows are expected to work September - July with a holiday in December, starting before Christmas and ending just after the new year. January through March are Cabarete and Mariposa’s high seasons, meaning time off is very limited during this period. Fellows are awarded an additional 8 days of sick or personal leave. We ask for two weeks notice when possible. The fellowship program concludes at the end of Mariposa Summer Camp. and from the airport, course materials, and additional support throughout the fellowship.

When I first joined Mariposa at 16, I was drawn to the chance to mentor girls my own age and younger, knowing I could help shift the trajectory of their lives. What I didn’t expect was the exchange that happened in both directions—my Spanish improved dramatically through daily conversations with the girls, while I watched their English and reading comprehension flourish.
The most meaningful part? Returning the following summer and seeing how far they’d come— not just academically, but in their confidence and genuine excitement about learning. There’s something deeply special about knowing that the people you care about look forward to being around you, and that together you’re building something bigger than just one-on-one mentorship.
Mariposa taught me that opportunity and access matter as much as ability. The girls are sharp and curious; being around them changed how I think about equity in education. Professionally, I’ve gained invaluable skills in connecting with different personalities and keeping diverse groups engaged—skills that have directly shaped how I work today.
What drew me to Mariposa was its genuine commitment to every individual girl. Beyond structured lessons in English and pool activities, I spent my time building real relationships— playing volleyball, having conversations, and creating a space where the girls felt truly supported and encouraged.
The friendships that emerged were the most meaningful part of my experience. What started as simple shared activities turned into lasting connections. The girls didn’t see us as just teachers or helpers—they trusted us and cared about us. Many stayed in touch after those two weeks, calling and messaging to continue our friendships. We grew together, practicing languages and supporting each other’s development in ways that felt genuine and mutual.
My time at Mariposa strengthened my ability to connect across differences and taught me that real impact comes from showing up, listening, and building trust—not from structured lessons alone. It reinforced my passion for work that prioritizes community and empowerment, and reminded me that even small interactions can have lasting influence.
Read about real stories from young women who have been part of the Mariposa family.
What drew me to Mariposa was its strong commitment to empowering girls through education and community-based programming. As a summer 2024 intern, I supported a range of activities–from swim lessons and boogie boarding to typing and English classes–engaging directly with the girls across both their educational and recreational development.
The most meaningful part of my experience was witnessing Mariposa’s impact in real time. Seeing the girls feel confident, supported, and free to simply be themselves was incredibly powerful. Being part of an environment that actively uplifts young women was both inspiring and deeply rewarding.
My time at Mariposa reinforced my belief in the power of community-based initiatives to address real-world challenges. Staying connected and watching the girls grow and achieve their goals continues to inspire me—and this experience played a key role in my decision to pursue a career in the nonprofit sector.

Program fees ensure that all volunteers are properly supported, trained and supervised throughout their experience. Fees offset the real cost of running programs for girls and families year-round including providing volunteers with a meaningful educational and cultural experience.
Expenses covered by volunteer fees ensure their comfort, safety and success and may include:
• Orientation and pre-departure materials
• Ground transportation for airport pickup and dropoff
• Shared housing*
• Meals during working hours on site at the center and on excursions
• Program materials and supplies
• Cultural immersion activities
• Safety, insurance, and 24/7 emergency support
• Background checks, onboarding, and training
• Administrative and operational costs for training and oversight
• Direct funding for community programs and participants
*Note on Single Occupancy: Single occupancy accommodations are available for an additional fee. Please inquire about pricing and availability.
• Round-trip international airfare: Approximately US $600-$950
• Weekly personal budget: Approximately US $100 for meals, laundry, transportation, and incidentals
• Travel insurance and vaccinations (required)
Additional costs may be incurred if Mariposa staff must assist with medical evacuation, hospital care, or other emergency situations requiring extraordinary support.
We understand that program fees can be a significant investment. Many of our past interns and fellows have successfully funded their participation through grants, scholarships, fundraising, and sponsorships.

Here are some strategies to consider:
• Contact your college or university career center or volunteer coordinator–they often have a network of organizations and institutions providing funding for internships and fellowships in this area of work
• Apply for Fulbright, fellowship, or study abroad grants
• Seek grants from nonprofit and service organizations
• Ask family, friends, and colleagues to sponsor your participation
• Organize fundraising events–many interns have funded their entire program this way
• Contact us to discuss financial assistance options

Program fees directly cover your housing, safety, meals, orientation, on-site coordination, professional development, and the training necessary to prepare you for meaningful work. New interns require significant investment; even experienced professionals need extensive orientation to local culture, language, operations, and best practices. Your fees make it possible for us to provide the quality experience and impact that define Mariposa.
Spanish skills are highly recommended and will enhance your experience significantly. Your language ability affects your placement and responsibilities–we cannot provide translators for teachers or specialized professionals. We encourage all applicants to invest time in language preparation before arrival and prepare tools for moments of challenging language and cultural differences.
Accommodations are simple and safe. You may experience inconsistent hot water, power outages, limited internet, and other challenges typical of Dominican coastal communities. This is part of the learning experience. Coming with flexibility, humor, and a growth mindset transforms the challenges you might encounter into meaningful cultural immersion.
We believe commitment and passion should not be limited by finances. We strongly encourage interested applicants to explore grants, scholarships, and fundraising through your school, career services, and international organizations. Contact us to discuss your situation as we may be able to suggest additional resources or work with you on creative solutions. Please reach out to us at info@mariposadrfoundation.org.
We welcome undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professionals of all ages and backgrounds. Your passion for our mission, your flexibility, and your commitment to learning alongside the girls and community members we serve will be the most important considerations of your application.
Possibly. Contact us early to discuss your preferences. Extensions depend on organizational needs, housing availability, and program structure, but we’re happy to explore options.
Our on-site team provides 24/7 support and oversight. We maintain emergency protocols and can assist with medical referrals, evacuation if necessary, and emotional support. We also stay in close contact with families when needed.
An internship or fellowship at Mariposa strengthens anyone’s personal development and professional experience. You will spend time dedicated to practicing leadership, mentoring, language, and organizational skills valued across nonprofit, education, and global development fields. Beyond credentials, you will gain perspective, resilience, and cultural fluency that shape how you engage with the world moving forward.

Thank you for supporting our mission and making the world a better place.
