veryone in this room knows someone or is someone struggling with addiction, or working every day to remain sober. You’re not alone.

Spring of 2027 will mark 20 years of sobriety for me. I didn’t get sober through AA as Steven does in The White Chip, but I had a similar experience to his in that the religious overtones of organized sobriety didn’t resonate with me. Nevertheless, I found myself guided by a “higher power,” and I felt that guidance was absolutely necessary to my ability to maintain a sober life. I discovered a power greater than myself in the love that I felt after the birth of my first child. Months before he was born, I knew that I wanted nothing more than to be the best father and the best person that I could be for him. His birth opened a new dimension of love in my heart, but it took me another few months to understand what that meant for my drinking. I had tried to tone it down and be very responsible… until I wasn’t. I came to realize that I would never have the ability to control my alcohol consumption unless I never took another drink of alcohol, so that’s what I chose. I have three children now, and as a parent, my love is not divided between them. It is multiplied by each one, amplifying even further my desire to remain sober. The unintended effect is: because of that, somewhere along the way I discovered that I needed to make room to love myself as well. That is a conclusion that I never, ever would have come to without sobriety. Everyone deserves to find what I’ve found for myself in their own way, and I hope that this play (the silliest serious play that I’ve ever met) can help. — Lance Gardner Executive Artistic Director
