MADRE PROJECT

STUDENT HOUSING IN CHIARAVALLE

Location: Chiaravalle, Milan, Italy

Year: 2021-2022

Postgraduate Construction and Sustainability Design Studio

Professors: Matteo Clementi, Elena Lucchi

The project was oriented towards the design of a NZEN, Nearly Zero Energy Neighborhood in an existing settlement, in line with a sustainable urban densification approach. The aim was to create a single publix building and a cluster of smaller housing cluster that can accommodate residences and services for a limited number of students, in close relationship with an existing urban fabric in the village of Chiaravalle, south of Milan.

THE OPENING SCENE

POLYHEDRIC SHELL

The Miao people have a history of a hostile attitude towards guests. The main reason for the attutude comes from the Miao rebellions where Miao people fought on their ground to protect their territory and were left with the emotional aftermath of having to reclaim your place and your heritage.

ANTICIPATION THROUGH TRANSITION

The element of anticipation that is present in the narrative in the central part of the poem. Here the Miao people are expecting visitors and preparing an attack. This feeling of anticipation is translated through the element of vertical communication and transition spaces. Through these spaces we are gradually building up from the flexible extroverted shell and penetrating inside the fixed core.

INTROSPECTIVE CORE

The people of Miao are looking for a sheltered home that can be a place to hide from the outside worldand to be protected from the harsh environment. The modality chose is that of providing a double facade/shell from outside and by lifting the core off the ground, as it is floating. This way the public realm is connected and rooted to the ground, but the private is floating above connected to the sky.

The shadows represent the victory of the Miao heads.

This is why the shadows of the village during the day spreads.

A cavern full of bones, The Hans rest in ground, Their migration was successful But not on Miao land.

What is that in the valley? The shadows that float How was ther flesh eaten But the contours still wont?

The Miaos were intelligent, For they have flead their land. Brave women pounded their corn An invitation to the khas in advance.

Tha khas, summoned by corn, Preserve the bones but eat the flesh. Hans weapons can’t belay, What an appetite khas they have today.

How Hans carry on such steep stairs? Their axes on their backs. Do they not know of khas? Their weapons don’t stand a chance.

The matrimony was a deception.

Did the matrimony start? Why the bride’s not dressed?

Why are the villagers leaving? It did not start yet?

Sound of pounded corn, Smell of burnt pine wood, The village is deserted, Our guests will come soon.

Who dares to interpost?

Who knows not their land?

For they do not know the cost?

For whom the land is reaped? It is not for the one who steals.

The Hans have entered.

The family is of four beds, One marrital and three kids, The head is a builder and a farmer, The lady embroids on the belustrade, Kids run around and like to play.

This story starts in Denglu, Our family is out of bed, A Han father brings his son in the village

To get a Miao daughter to wed.

During the dinner a dispute arose, A Miao boy was accused

While in search of a pig heart, And got his stomach ripped out.

The pig’s heart was not there.

Where does the story start?

Where do the Miao live?

Are their homes out of wood? How are the houses built?

Sitting on a slope, Stilted on wooden posts, Miao Ganlan house

On the steeped valley floats.

How is the family composed? Who is the family head? What do the women do? How is the time spent?

RE(Activating) Naviglio Martesana

Landscape Architecture

Location: Milan, Naviglio Martesana, Italy Year: 2023

Postgraduate Thematic Studio

Professors: Fabiano Lemes De Oliveira, Gerardo Semprebon, Alberta Cazzani

This Thematic Studio focused on the relationships between urban, peri-urban and rural areas and the roles of historic landscapes in future scenarios for sustainable development.

This project merges nature and community with three distinct features: an organic walkway leading to a pavilion overlooking a bio lake, a canoe building functioning as a water taxi hub along the Martesana, and an intimate area designed for the local community garden. These elements provide spaces for relaxation, recreation, and community engagement, offering scenic views and practical amenities.

39 40

In a biolake system, plants and animals collaborate within an intricate ecosystem. Plants effectively purify water by absorbing nutrients and filtering pollutants, vital for sustaining aquatic life. They also generate oxygen, supporting the ecosystem’s health. These plants provide habitat and nourishment for various animals, fostering biodiversity. This interaction creates a balanced food chain and nutrient cycle. The diversity of plant species ensures a thriving ecosystem. Together, flora and fauna maintain a sustainable and harmonious environment.

SOUTH WEST BALLET ACADEMY

AUDITORIUM/PERFORMANCE ARCHITECTURE

Location: Redcliffe, Bristol, England

Year: 2019-2020

Undergraduate Design Studio

Located in the central part of Bristol and a feeder for Trinity Laban, the South West Ballet Academy aims to motivate and inspire the new generation through thorough academic program aligned with precisely structured dance courses.

The spacious interior features double height ballet studios, which not only offer views of the dancers moving in and around the building, but also expand the academy’s astonishing views towards the harborside.

45 46

Part of the masterplan is the public courtyard in between, which is also shaped using the same geometrical forms, bringing together the different structures located on the site.

47 48

Connection to Water

The site has a unique relationship to the water, overlooking the river, offering great views and feeling of calmness

Easily accessible by pedestrians through important routes. The site is used daily as a short-cut (connecting the South and North of Bristol) by workers and locals

As it is located next to the edge of the harbourside, there is not much traffic around the site, resulting in a less noise polluted place
