DESIGN STATEMENT

For our Mamma Mia costume designs we aim to present a thoughtful color palette to mirror each character's journey, seamlessly integrating shifts in tone to reflect emotional and relational developments. We aim to visually emphasize the progression of the story through creative adaptation and customization, enhancing the storytelling with visual depth.

RESEARCH

FASHION IN THE PERIOD

Mamma Mia is set in 1999, on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi.

Y2K Fashion: Approaching the 21st century, fashion took on a futuristic and experimental edge, with designers embracing metallics, iridescence, and sleek silhouettes inspired by visions of the future

Minimalism: Building on the trends of the late 1990s, minimalist fashion continued to shine in runways and street style. Clean lines, neutral colors, khakis and understated elegance defined the aesthetic, popularized by designers like Calvin Klein.

Pop Culture Influences: This time was rise of pop culture icons like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and the Spice Girls, whose bold styles influenced fashion trends. Crop tops, platform shoes, and playful accessories became staples of the era.

Streetwear: Streetwear continued to gain traction, with brands like FUBU, Sean John, and Rocawear catering to urban youth culture. Baggy jeans, oversized hoodies, and graphic tees were emblematic of the hip-hop and street style aesthetic.

Revival of '70s and '80s Fashion: Nostalgia for past decades influenced fashion trends, leading to a resurgence of '70s and '80s-inspired styles. Bell-bottom jeans, platform shoes, and retro prints made a comeback, reimagined for the contemporary fashion landscape.

COLOR MEANINGS

We chose colors to represent each of our characters and focused on those in order to design our costumes and provide a better understanding of each character for the audience:

Donna: Her color is dark blue, she holds authority of her family and her hotel, she gives people stability and provides safety for Sophie.

Sophie: Her colors are light blue and white, the blue compliments Donna and shows their relation ship while highlighting Sophie’s freshness. White shows her purity and the idea that she is still figuring out who she wants to be.

Tanya: She brings the energy and passion that red represents, she is the counter part of Rosie and keeps them young and excited.

Rosie: She is represented almost perfectly by green, it highlights her reliability and balance between Tanya’s and Donna’s spirit.

Sam: Although at the beginning he is represented by gray and black, he changes throughout the show and begins complimenting Donna by establishing serenity within himself and providing her with stability, which is also represented by a deep blue.

Harry: Throughout the story, Harry undergoes so much personal growth and finds a spontaneous and adventurous side of himself which can be shown by orange tones, they also highlight creativity and vitality which are aspects brought by the character in every scene.

Bill: His color is brown, the character brings a sense or calmness and warmth into the chaotic environment he sets foot in, he’s an easy going person with a very earthy and natural spirit.
