Sports in Qatar Qatar believes in making sport available to all, both as participants and spectators. The nation has invested heavily in world-class infrastructure, establishing itself as a major destination for high-profile sports events like the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, the first time the competition has been held in the Middle East. Traditional pursuits like horse and camel racing sit alongside modern sports like padel, Formula 1 and rock climbing, offering something for everyone. National Sports Day in Qatar was created in 2011 to highlight the importance of physical health and encourage everyone to engage in physical activity. It is an official, paid public holiday held annually on the second Tuesday of February – Qatar is one of only a few countries to hold such a public holiday.

Ministry of Sports and Youth The current Ministry of Sports and Youth (MSY) was established in 2021 with the mandate to 'support the development of youth, build their capacities, and promote their role in performing their duties, as well as to support talented and distinguished young people and help them develop their skills, encourage the community to practice sports as a part of their lifestyle, increase participation in sports activities, and support national sports talents.' A new strategy was launched in March 2025, with the slogan 'Quality Life and Future-Ready Youth'. It focuses on nurturing talented athletes, improving public health through sports with support to the private sector, and increasing operational efficiency at sports facilities. In September 2025, the MSY announced the creation of the National Sports Day Award for Government and Private Entities. The award is given for the efforts made in organising year-round sports events and aims to encourage positive competition among institutions, provide a healthy and active work environment, and promote the spirit of sportsmanship in the local community. msy.gov.qa
Qatar Olympic Committee The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) was established in 1979 and became a member of the International Olympic Committee in 1980, the Olympic Council of Asia in 1981, and the Arab Sports Games Federation in 1982. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani was re-elected President of the QOC for the new Olympic term (2024–2028). Since its establishment, the QOC has played a major role in spreading sports awareness in the country, developing the Olympic culture in accordance with the Olympic Charter, and supporting sports performance. Successes include athletes like Mutaz Barshim, regarded as one of the best high jumpers of all time, with four Olympic
medals, including one gold. Weightlifter Fares Ibrahim is another Olympic medal winner with gold at the 2020 Summer Olympics – the first Qatari Olympic champion in any sport. Looking to future success, the QOC 2023–2030 Strategy has three main objectives: ensuring sports excellence, promoting Olympic culture, and achieving comprehensive sports development. The top priorities are to prepare better national teams, encourage all members of society to participate in sports and adopt healthy lifestyles, and host major tournaments to promote sports tourism. New Bicycle Master Plan Unveiled By Sarah Palmer
T
he Ministry of Transport (MOT) launched an updated version of the Qatar Bicycle Master Plan (QBMP) in conjunction with World Bicycle Day on 3 June 2026, to capitalise on existing infrastructure while boosting bicycle use. This new integrated package of plans, policies, and regulations will guide the development of cycling and micromobility, to improve safety, enhance facilities, and create a sustainable, connected, and integrated transportation system to meet existing and future needs.
The Ministry conducted a large-scale field survey in 2024 across a diverse range of male and female participants, both Qataris and residents, from all age groups and areas, with a particular focus on the most densely populated areas. Interviews were held at 147 diverse locations: parks, residential and commercial areas, beaches, sports facilities, shopping and entertainment areas, transportation hubs, cultural and tourist sites, and universities.
The QBMP has also been updated to keep up with the requirements of a growing population, and in consideration of world developments in modern mobility modes. it focuses on enhancing the usage of bicycles, in daily movement or for sports and recreation, both safely and sustainably, and equally regulating the use of other micromobility devices. Research in Qatar has shown that 19% of the population own bicycles or a micromobility device, yet they are used in less than 1% of their daily trips.
How the new plan was developed The new version is thanks to the collaboration of government entities, the private sector, and academic and research institutions, which comprehensively examined and assessed more than 1,500 km of existing bike routes: 937 km of standalone routes and 561 km of routes connected to pedestrian tracks. The original framework was introduced to expand cycling infrastructure. The MOT then started an active overhaul of the plan across multiple phases, hosting three consultative stakeholder workshops, with the last taking place in September 2025.
The survey gathered information and feedback on current and future needs, as well as challenges and preferences related to micromobility options like bicycles and e-scooters. It aimed to understand what affects using these micromobility devices the most and diagnose key barriers and motivators. It revealed major factors and trends influencing people's decisions in bicycle and micromobility preferences, trip purposes, average travel time, barriers, and motivators among respondents. Additionally, there were over 120 technical meetings with stakeholders, and more than 60 national and international documents and best international practices were reviewed.

Key features of the revised plan The new QBMP will add more than 3,800 km of bike routes, construct more than 110 km of gradeseparated crossings, and establish 7 mega amenity hubs to serve and support bike and e-scooter users.

It also introduces 17 policies, 18 schemes, 348 supporting regulatory measures, the Qatar Bike Infrastructure Planning and Design Guide (QBIG) that will serve as a national, standardised technical manual, and a GIS comprehensive geodatabase. According to Abdullah Seif Al Sulaiti, the MOT's Assistant Undersecretary for Land Transport Affairs, 'The QBMP embodies the MOT’s commitment to developing an integrated, safe, resilient, and sustainable transportation system that provides easy access to various vital destinations and supports the transition to more efficient and environmentally friendly modes of transportation.' He added that the QBMP is aligned with the MOT Strategy 2025–2030, the objectives of the Third Qatar National Development Strategy 2024-2030 (NDS3), and supports the pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030) by contributing to reducing carbon emissions, improving quality of life and public health, supporting sustainable economic development, and enhancing the efficiency of the transport network. Now there is a unified national reference that supports government agencies and the private sector in planning and implementing transport and micromobility projects for better efficiency. It consolidates technical and planning standards, enhances integration between transport projects and urban planning, supports data-driven decisionmaking, and achieves sustainability, safety, and urban connectivity targets.
Qatar's current cycling network Between 2013 and 2025, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) delivered 3,430 km of cycling paths across highways and major and local roads, to promote healthy lifestyles and sustainable mobility across the country. The network has been designed in line with international standards, with both shared pedestrian-cycling paths and dedicated cycling lanes. Many of the routes have green spaces, shaded areas, rest stops and bicycle parking facilities for user comfort and safety – one of the findings from the survey conducted in 2024. Several routes, including the Olympic Cycling Track along Al Khor Coastal Road, have been fitted with smart technologies and monitoring systems to improve cyclist safety and support efficient operation. Ashghal is continuing to expand the network and strengthen links with Doha Metro stations to support multi-modal transportation, conducting studies and field surveys to extend coverage to more residential and commercial areas. m The Olympic Cycling Track along Al Khor Coastal Road holds two Guinness World Records: for the world’s longest continuous cycle path, and the longest piece of asphalt concrete laid continuously. This is an accessible track and suitable for all age groups. It is 33 km long and 7 m wide, to easily accommodate side-by-side riding, wide adaptive tricycles, and recumbent bikes. The route has strategic transit points connecting to Doha Metro stations for seamless 'first and last-mile' travel for non-drivers. The underpasses and bridges enable non-stop riding away from the road, and there are 80 bicycle stands, 100 benches and 20 rest areas along the route.
