The History of Conference Choral Performances
Southwestern Region of the American Choral Directors Association
1963 - 2026
As my term began coming to an end (completed on July 1, 2026), I wanted to create something that could be enjoyed for generations to come. The difficult work had already been done; scanning past Choral Journal issues and archiving them on the ACDA website. My job, although time consuming, was easy in comparison.
The year, location, ensemble, city and conductor are included for each performance. If literature was included in the Choral Journal, it will also be included.
As we move towards the future, I believe it is always good to keep the past in sight. That is why I included a “Time Capsue” in each issue. ACDA and SWACDA would not be where it is today if not for the work of past presidents and choral directors.
I hope you will enjoy reading through this, what I’ll call a “special edition” of The Southwestern Connection. And you may find some “ new ” literature.

The First Southwestern ACDA Conference was held in St Louis, Missouri on Friday, January 11, 1963 The event took place in the Chase-Park Plaza Hotel Planning was overseen by Stephen G. Hobson, the Regional Chairman who was from Kirksville, Missouri, and it was a joint conference with MENC.

The Southwestern Division biennial convention was held in Oklahoma City at the Hilton Inn West on March 19 and 20, 1976. Thirteen choral ensembles representing junior high, high school, college, and church were selected to perform. Harrison Boughton, Southwestern Division President, was assisted in convention preparations by Wesley Forbis of Liberty, Missouri, and by Betty Woods of Ada, Oklahoma. Rates for ACDA members and performing groups were: 1 person, 1 bed - $18.00; 2 people, doubles - $22.00; 3 or 4 people/room - $6.50 per person

Sixteen outstanding choral groups from the seven states in the division will perform, including three church choirs. The 2008 Southwestern Division American Choral Directors Association Convention is going to pay homage to the past and look to the future of the choral music profession, Kansas City is the birthplace of the American Choral Directors Association, founded on February 24, 1959 in the historic Muehlebach Hotel. The Muehlebach is now part of the Kansas City Marriott Downtown, the convention headquarters hotel for SWACDA 2008. The Muehlebach was the site of ACDA National Conventions in 1971 and 1979, and the 1992 SWACDAConvention. February 20-23, 2008
