Ireallyenjoyhistory.Iwasfortunatetohaveareallygoodhistoryteacherduringmyjunioryearinhigh school,andthenIhadtheopportunitytohavehimagainatthejunior(community)college Notonlywas heagreatteacher,buthewasaniceman.IwasinbandwithhischildrenandamnowFacebookfriends withhimandhiswife.

IlovewatchingtheKenBurnsfilmsonPBSandwatchingperiodtelevisionshows,andifIenjoyedreading, Iwouldprobablyenjoyreadingabouthistory.IthinktheloveofhistoryisonereasonwhyIdecidedto includethe“TimeCapsule”sectionineachissueofTheSouthwesternConnection The“TimeCapsule”inthis issue,isthe“Convention”issuefrom1978whentheSouthwesternRegionconferencewasheldinLawton, Oklahoma.AsIbeganreadingthroughthearticle,IrealizedthateventhoughIwasonlythirteenin1978,I kneworhadaconnectionwithseveralofthedirectorsmentionedinthearticleIalsorealizedwhatasmall worldthechoralworldreallyis.

RodWalkerfromKansasState-HedirectedourDistrictChoirwhenIwasinhighschoolinSEKansasand ourchoirdirectortookustoa“choirday”atK-Statemysophomoreyearandweworkedwithhimforthe day.HealsoservedasaSouthwesternRegionPresident,withhisconferencebeingheldinDenverin1994.

GuyWebbfromNewMexicoStateUniversity-Ofcourse,IknewDr.WebbfromSouthwestMissouri State,orasitisnowcalled,MissouriStateUniversity IstudiedwithhimasIworkedtowardsmyMMin ChoralConducting.Dr.WebbalsoservedaspresidentofSWACDA,andhisconferencewasheldinSt. Louisin2006.

HarrisonBoughtonfromWichitaStateUniversity-IfirstmetDr.Boughtonatacollegiatehonorchoir.It waseitherthe1987MMEAAll-Collegiateorthe1988SWACDACollegiateinWichita Iwouldlatergetto knowhimasanadjudicatorformychoirsandhavetheopportunitytovisitwithhimwhenhecameto MissouriCDAsummerconferences.Dr.BoughtonalsoservedaspresidentofSWACDAandhisconference washeldinDallasin1976 ManyofyouwillknowthatDr Boughtonrecentlypassedaway Hisobituaryis sharedinthisissue's“InMemoriam”section.

SallyJohnson(Herman)fromFoxJr.High-SallyisknownandlovedinMissouri.Herchoirswereknown forbeautiful,maturetonequalityandexceptionalliterature.ShealsotaughtattheUniversityofMissouriSt.Louis.Her“OMagnumMysterium”isoneofthemostlovelypiecesIhaveeverconducted.

KellyDamefromWestPlains,MO-IhaveknownKellysinceIbeganteachingin1988.Herchoirshave performedMANYtimesforMMEAandSWACDA.ShetaughtinArkansasforafewyearsandhastaught atWestPlainsfor52years

SharonWilkinsfromWillard,MO-SharonwasmycollegechoraldirectoratEvangelUniversity(College) Itransferredtherein1985andgraduatedin1988.WesangatMMEAandtouredduringThanksgivingand SpringBreaksandtwo3-weeksummertours-tothewestcoastandtheeastcoast/Bahamas.Sharonisthe personwhoencouragedmetojoinACDAandtoldmethatIneededtostartattendingconferences She retiredseveralyearsagofromtheuniversityandisnowteachingmiddleandhighschoolchoirataprivate ChristianschoolinSpringfield,MO.Sheisinher52ndyearofteaching.

Dr. Julie Yu (She/Her/Hers) is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University and the Artistic Director of Canterbury Voices, Oklahoma’s premiersymphonychorus.SheholdsaBachelorofMusicdegreeinMusicEducationfromtheUniversityof CentralOklahoma,aMasterofMusicdegreeinChoralConductingfromOklahomaStateUniversity,anda Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from the University of North Texas. Before joining OCU and Canterbury Voices, she taught at Norman North High School in Oklahoma, San José State University, and Kansas State University. She has given presentations and conducted, and/or her choirs haveperformedforstateandregionalconferencesoftheAmericanChoralDirectorsAssociation,National AssociationforMusicEducation,andtheEuropeanMusicEducatorsAssociation.Sheisthepastpresident of the Southwestern Region of the American Choral Directors Association and served as an International ConductingExchangeFellowtoKenya.Herfavoriteareaofresearchandperformanceisworkingasaguest clinician/conductorforvarioushonorchoirsandprofessionalorganizations.

IamamazedatthespiritofgenerosityofthemembersofACDA thegenerosityoftime,resources,energy, andencouragement.Itishumblingtoseemastereducatorsandrenownedartistsmovingchairs,workingat the registration table, and mentoring the next generation of choral directors.
