To improve work environment

Direction set for Operation 3P in 1982 Each new year, one of the primary goals for CDI is to establish direction for its productivity program, Operation 3P. 3P, which stands for Positive Productivity Program, began in 1979 as an effort to increase company productivity. Since then it has been made a permanent effort to continually seek ways to meet this goal. Originally. 3P consisted of incentives and awards recognizing (achievement. It has since been expanded into a broad based employee relations program which also includes company moves and policies to increase efficiency, a coordinated safety effort, a newsletter, training, computerization of tool management, a theft and loss prevention effort, and organized activities — softball teams, fishing tournament, and steak dinners. This year 3P will focus on ways to improve the quality of the work environment at the job site. Through company surveys, CDI has learned that a multitude of problems exist at the operating or worker level, and that these are often the major barriers that affect productivity. i

Some of these problems include material handling and placement, shortage of good tools, and the re doing of work. Statistics bear these out with some experts saying that it usually requires more effort to get materials within 15 feet of their installation than it does to actually •install them. As a result, 3P will see the development and utilization of more of these surveys to identify the

Worker surveys such as those being conducted above will provide useful information in determining exact problems faced on the jobsite. Information from these surveys will be used to find solutions to these problems and increase worker productivity.

specific problems on any particular job. With the information from these job surveys, CDI will then explore solutions to these problems. In addition, a productivity committee will be formed in 1982 to continually look at any problems which affects productivity. This committee will then develop ways to overcome the obstacles and thus improve operating efficiency. Thirdly, 3P in 1982 will emphasize the importance of communications in addressing problems. For the surveys to be useful, craftsmen must be willing to communicate the problems to their supervisors. Likewise, for the committee to function properly, information must

be brought to it before it can act on any matter. And, most importantly, supervisors, foremen and management must be willing to exercise the other half of communication and listen to the input they receive. Of course 3P will not be restricted to these activities and goals. Most of the programs already underway will continue, while new ideas will be developed and explored throughout the year. Wherever 3P takes us this year, your support as a craftsman in the field or a member of the office staff will be the key ingredient in its success, and the fulfillment of its goal.
