AREEBA will receive $14 million from the Palaszczuk Government, which will be used to further develop the airport and various waterbased facilities. All projects were tabled prior to this year’s election by the previous Member for Cook, David Kempton, with the funds secured through the LNP’s ‘Royalties for Regions’ program. The Mareeba Airport will receive $13 million, which will include a new international flight school and overall development of the facility, while the remaining $1 million will be set aside for upgrades to the town’s wastewater treatment plant, along with purchasing a one mega litre reservoir for Kuranda. Despite the change in government, Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore has worked feverously with various stakeholders to ensure that all three projects were honoured. Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter released a statement last Sunday praising Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth for ‘having secured the money for the upgrading of the Mareeba Airport’. While there can be no question of Mr Knuth’s commitment to the Tablelands or support toward local projects, it should be noted the Mareeba Airport is located in the Cook electorate, not Dalrymple. State Development Minister and Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the ALP was committed to honouring both ‘Royalties for Regions’ based projects. The airport development will be comprised of two stages, with an initial brief and preliminary drainage works, with the overall development to follow. Mayor Gilmore said the funding could prove to be a real turning point for the town and his Shire as a whole. “This development has been sought after for many years and on behalf of the community, I offer my deepest gratitude to the Minister and the Government for offering this once in a lifetime opportunity,” he said. Contact was made with the Member for Cook’s (Billy Gordon) staff in regard to the matter, although no response was received by our print deadline. Mr Gordon’s role in the negotiation process of these outcomes is publically unclear, as Mr Lynham did not mention Mr Gordon’s input during the announcement.

Government commits to Mt Emerald Wind Farm SUPPORTERS of the Mt Emerald Wind Farm have had their hopes soar, with the Palaszczuk Government approving the development application for the site. Deputy Premier Jackie Trad- who has been in the Far North recently and visited the site- said she believed the Mt Emerald Wind Farm would secure the region’s longterm future. Despite the provisional green light, the project will have stringent conditions that must be adhered to and ultimately must be approved federally before work can begin. “This project will employ up to 200 workers over a two-year construction period, with ongoing employment for up to 15 local workers over the life of the wind farm,” she said. “This will generate direct and indirect economic benefits to the local, regional, and national economies.” Ms Trad assured local residents that due diligence had been ensured during the process and several stakeholders had been consulted with.
“I have listened first-hand to the community’s concerns regarding the proposed development, particularly in relation to potential noise, traffic and environmental issues,” she said. “As part of the approval, the State requires the proponent, Mount Emerald Wind Farm Pty Ltd, to comply with a number of strict conditions, including daytime and night time noise limits which are equal to, or better than, standards in other states like Victoria and South Australia.” Mt Emerald Wind Farm and Port Bajool director John Morris said the project would be a welcomed investment for the region. “Mt Emerald will encourage a positive investment environment for future projects that will help grow a local renewable generation network to include various forms of solar, hydro and biofuels,” he said. Those against the project heartily disapproved the decision, with Tableland Wind Turbine Action spokesperson Steve Lavis lashing several elements of the an-
nouncement. “This is a tragedy for the Tablelands,” he said. “These turbines will be a 20-year monument to the stupidity of the ALP for allowing their green ideology to get in the way of common sense. “We believe the Minister has deliberately misled Queenslanders in her media statement. “The developers will basically write their own plans for construction, operation and complaints procedures. Similar permits recently issued by the Minister specifically require plans to be approved by the Department. “Contrary to the Minister’s statement, there is no requirement for the Government to approve the Mount Emerald plans. “On top of this, there is no explanation about how the developers will be monitored for compliance. This is a very low act by the Government. “We are all keen to expand on these failures in the planning process when the Senate Inquiry meets in Cairns on 18 May.”
Thespians prepare for ‘Sunnytown’
MANAGING EDITOR Carl Portella
By Justin Fris MAREEBA performing arts talent Krystal Sweedman (pictured) is forging a unique path in Australian drama; and her first major play ‘Sunnytown’ is scheduled for release in October at Brisbane’s Roundhouse Theatre. After graduating from Mareeba State High School in 2004, Krystal has circumnavigated the globe, but never lost a passion for acting and bringing scripts to life. “Ida Portella helped get me involved in the theatre originally,” she said. “I started with the Mareeba Repertory Society in year three, where I played a rapping wiseman in their Christmas nativity. My passion continued throughout the years, expressing itself in a variety of different roles in several plays. “It wasn’t until I did a playrighting course (with renowned playright Stephen Carleton) while studying drama at The University of Queensland, that I realised I loved writing plays and bringing characters to life in front of my eyes.” Ms Sweedman freely admits she enjoys writing more than acting and loves working with actors and actresses who bring their own imagination into character. halfway through her Business Management and Arts degree at UQ, Ms Sweedman returned to Australia and upon graduating from UQ successfully, gained a place at the the postgraduate ‘Writing for Performance’ program at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. Ms Sweedman says ‘Sunnytown’ is a unique production that delves into the subconscious of its 13-year old protagonist Danika Hart, who glimmers into a fantasy world when anxious. “Effectively, it is an Australian version of Alice in Wonderland, albeit a little darker,” she said. “It plays with the imagination and attention of the audience, providing clues throughout to a surprising revelation at the end.” Although pencilled in for the season between October 13 and 31, Krystal and her dedicated production staff are calling on anyone who may wish to donate toward their final product. All funds raised will go toward costume and production related costs, with Creative Partnerships Australia prepared to match every donation dollar for dollar. Common ground By Justin Fris
A common love for sport participation and consultation were overriding themes for those who attended last Wednesday’s public consultation process for Mareeba’s proposed sporting complex. Copies of a draft master plan for the various stages were presented, with both members of the general public and various organisations given opportunity to put forward comments and potential concerns. Stage one of the precinct will see the implementation of four ball courts, which will be primarily utilised by basketball and netball, along with dual-share cycle and pedestrian walkways. The proposal would also include two new cricket grounds, which would be located at Firth Park, a stone’s throw from Davies Park. Further consultation is planned for all major stakeholders involved in the project, to ensure that viable outcomes can be met for all parties directly involved and impacted. Mareeba Junior Rugby League President Gerard Kath said he felt the junior rugby league community was in ‘complete support’ of the sporting precinct, but they were keen for all parties to walk away happy. “Junior rugby league very much supports both the sporting precinct, and the creation of the stage one ball courts at Davies Park,” he said. Mr Kath also clarified the club’s stance on a potential indoor recreation centre, which has been earmarked to be built
alongside the courts. He said the club was very much in favour of the concept of a future indoor sport facility, but felt the positioning could be re-examined through further consultation. “I’ve been very heartened and enlightened by the public consultation process,” he said. “Rebecca (architect) has been a strong listener and is prepared to go back through further consultation to generate viable options for all of us. “There is a lot of goodwill and drive from all members of the sporting precinct reference group, but we need to make sure we get it right straight away (through extensive consultation).” Mareeba Netball Association President Connie Martens said members of the local netball community were committed to working with all stakeholders throughout the consultation process and beyond. “As President of Mareeba Netball, I have always been mindful of existing sporting organisations and users of sites, however some changes are needed to be able to accommodate netball and other sports and activities and organisations in Mareeba,” she said. “Long gone are the days that one site means one sport and we have been working with basketball, cricket and other organisations to ensure that the facility meets the needs of more than one sport or activity. “We now need the community to understand the changes and the benefit the project will have to the all the organisations involved and to the community at large.”

WW1 display opened
By Justin Fris A moving WW1 photographic display was officially opened by Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore last Friday morning. Based at the Mareeba Historical Society, loyal volunteers have spent many years preparing for this truly remarkable shrine of our nation’s past. After a formal introduction from Mr John Hammond (Historical Society committee member), local aboriginal elder Christina Madigan gave a sterling rendition of ‘welcome to country’ in front of distinguished guests and members of her family. Before leading the group into a moment of respect for those who had served us so bravely, Tony HallMatthews recited a couple of anecdotes. Both anecdotes centred around David John Garland, John Moses and Pastor Arthur Whyte. Whyte, who was the nation’s founder of the dawn service, was recognised at a special memorial in Yungaburra on Saturday. Mr Hall-Matthew told the audience that Mr Garland went to Qld parliament in 1916, only a year after the first landing at Gallipoli.

Mr Garland stressed the need for ANZAC Day celebrations in Qld to be provided in an inclusive format, with the federal government not marking ANZAC Day celebrations nationally until 1930. Mayor Gilmore said the time of the year was an opportunity for us all to reflect and respect those who had gone before us. “Almost 100 years after the event, today the sun is shining,” he said. “We can be thankful for today, to all that have gone before us.” Mayor Gilmore highlighted that many diggers were subjected to appalling circumstances, with up to 5000 diggers losing their lives on one day. Helen Kindt and Carol Pagett, who both played major roles in the formulation of the display, were excited at their vision being realised. “ANZAC Day is all about looking back on how people accepted a challenge,” Ms Pagett said. “Instead of running away, they embraced it through mateship.” Ms Kindt said the current display will be viewable for at least 12 months, with additional changes each three months, with an exciting tribute to local indigenous serviceman and women in the pipeline.

RURAL entrepreneurs and innovative thinking will be at the forefront of the upcoming ‘Startup Weekend Tablelands’ between May 1 and 3 in Atherton. Held at the Destiny Cafe, event participants will spend 54 hours together and learn the fundamentals of pitching a business idea, gauging interest amongst peers and bringing it to life. Regardless of your background and qualifications, this opportunity will provide individuals with an opportunity to bring an idea to life. Tablelands Futures Corporation chairman Michael Lawrence said the concept was an exciting one and had the opportunity to welcome fresh faces into the local business industry. “The Tablelands is an area which is encouraging innovation,” he said. “The weekend provides a great opportunity for those with a serious business idea to put it forward in a low-cost environment. “Overall, it’s a great investment opportunity for anyone interested in starting a business idea.” Local entrepreneur Tracey Beikoff (pictured) is the region’s latest example of an individual who originally presented an idea at a local workshop, which led to an appearance on national television. Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long said she was excited about the event, which will provide a world-class experience for local entrepreneurs. “Having a world class program held in our backyard is an easy avenue for locals to gain skills and hands on experience in new ways of working,” she said. Mayor Lee Long added that the event was the first of its kind for the Tablelands, following on from two successful workshops in Cairns. “It is a proven model to build networks within a local community” she said.

Jess Fealy, Leanne Kruss and Rachel Hay at the International Rural Women’s conference in Adelaide.
Rural women represented By Justin Fris TWO Mareeba women have represented the region with distinction at the International Rural Women’s conference in Adelaide. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association development officer Leanne Kruss and local scout leader Jess Fealy were among 160 international delegates, who gathered to share ideas and increase their networking circle. The conference covered a wealth of topics, with 30 internationally acclaimed speakers facilitating both interaction and discussion across the event. Ms Kruss said: “Women play a significant part in Australian and global agribusiness and they are occupying a rising number of diverse roles throughout the industry,” she said. “Our rural women play a massive contribution towards our society. “They do that in a huge, diverse number of ways, whether it’s through innovation, supporting their families, increasing agricultural production, biosecurity or natural resource management. “I have absolute respect and admiration for every single rural woman
that I ever meet, because every single one of them gives something in their own way to everything that they do. “The conference was a fantastic experience for me to listen to and speak with so many inspiring and influential Australian rural women.” Ms Fealy said she had got a great deal out of the conference and shared agricultural experiences with women all across Australia, along with delegates from Hong Kong. After initially learning about the conference on social media, Ms Fealy and Ms Kruss successfully applied for scholarships offered by conference organisers, with the MDFVGA covering flight costs for the pair. “I came away realising that we all, from all different corners of the world, care about the same things,” she said. “And that is to have thriving regional communities, extensive career opportunities for our kids, as well as staying up to date with the latest technology and knowing how to use it to improve our rural business. “I’ve come away hugely inspired and feel very grateful to the Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association for their support of my attendance at the conference.
Melioidosis warning RESIDENTS across the Far North are being warned to exercise caution outdoors, in light of a recent Melioidosis outbreak across the region. The disease, which is caused by a soilbased germ found in muddy water, is typically contracted through the germ entering through bodily abrasions or cuts. Cairns and Hinterland health service director Dr Richard Gair said there had already been 17 cases this year alone, which has leapfrogged the 12 case per year average. “This is a very high number given we usually only see about 10 to 12 cases every year,” he said. “The majority of infections occur when skin abrasions or wounds come into contact with wet soil or water contaminated by the bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei,” he said. “Melioidosis is very uncommon in healthy adults and rarely seen in children however those with certain underlying
diseases and conditions like diabetes, chronic lung or kidney disease and cancer are considered highly vulnerable. “Symptoms of acute Melioidosis include fever, cough and difficulty breathing; the affects can be very severe and almost always result in hospitalisation. Sometimes the disease may present as superficial skin infections or abscesses in various part of the body.” A Qld health spokesman added that residents across the Far North should ensure that all cuts or grazes should be covered as a precaution, if walking around garden-based soils or muddy pools. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said he wasn’t sure if Melioidosis had entered the region, but encouraged local residents to still remain vigilant. “We don’t know that’s it’s here in the Mareeba Shire, but nonetheless people at risk should take precaution. One would anticipate now that the wet season is over, the risk is becoming less.”

Be aware, but not alarmed By Justin Fris Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth has called for the establishment of a Biosecurity Qld facility in Townsville, in light of another concerning agricultural disease threatening the region. A property in Charters Towers recorded a case of Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic Virus, which impacted their watermelon crop. “The continued outbreak of exotic diseases in North Queensland confirms the need to re-open the biosecurity unit in Townsville,” Mr Knuth said. “This would mean better surveillance and biosecurity officers on the ground that are accessible and already working with the agricultural and beef industry. “It would also mean a return of jobs that were lost as a result of the closure.” Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro said the disease mimicked some traits from the Panama Tropical Race 4 disease, which has impacted the soil of two banana farms in the Far North. The virus can be traced through infected seeds, which authorities can use in a bid to locate the initial location of infection. But Mr Moro added that the CGMM virus also had the potential to impact pumpkin growers, which would could dent an industry which brings on average $6 million to the local economy. Mareeba fruit and vegetable grower Makse Srhoj, who is deeply concerned about the future of the industry, said he hoped the authorities could step in and ease growers’ concerns. “They really haven’t told us too much

about it,” he said. “First thing we need is for Biosecurity Qld to tell us directly what the virus means for us. “What crops will it target? And to what extent and precautions we can take? Because at the moment, it is no good us doing anything at the moment, because we don’t know much about it.” Mr Srhoj backed Mr Knuth’s idea for a biosecurity facility in Townsville and appeared disillusioned with Australia’s current
attitude to importing cheap fruit and vegetables from overseas. “I think so, because I got a feeling the last 10 years, biosecurity in the whole of Australia has been a bit lax,” he said. “I believe they took their finger off the pulse a little bit and I think there’s too many things coming into the country too easily, which is why I think we are having a lot of these issues over the last 10 years.”

New era for prostate diagnosis PROSTATE cancer management across the Far North has improved significantly, due to the input of a leading urologist in Australia, Dr Neil Gordon (pictured). Roughly 3300 men across the nation die annually from prostate cancer each year; a figure which is 3300 too many. Early detection of prostate cancer is vital for increased chance of survival, along with speedy and accurate diagnosis of test results. Remarkable new technology has been developed in the Netherlands, based out of the Radboud University Medical Centre. Dr Gordon, along with his fellow colleague Dr Kevin Daynes, are trained with the new technology and are the only ones in their field who have successfully used the apparatus in Australia. Patients have often travelled from all over the world to the Radboud facility to be tested, with Dr Gordon a firm believer of the new technology. “The key point is the combination of the MRI and accuracy of the Soteria, whereas in the past it was not uncommon for patients to undergo multiple biopsies to find the cancer,” said Dr Gordon. “It is so good that patients from all over Europe and the USA travel to the facility at Radboud University to be diagnosed,” he said.
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
A gift for living
‘’For example, the clinic in The Netherlands had one patient from the US who had endured over 80 biopsies prior to travelling to Nijmegen.’’ “The Soteria has changed the whole diagnosis process in terms of accuracy and means that the whole process only takes a few minutes.” Dr Gordon concluded that the new technology would be extremely welcomed, particularly for residents in the Far North. The current technology which is 20 to 25 years old can miss up to 30 per cent of cancers,” said Dr Gordon. “Up until now the main tools for detecting prostate cancer are a PSA screening blood test and digital rectal examinations which can then be followed by multiple biopsies but these have significant limitations,” said Dr Gordon. “Also, some abnormalities of PSA are the result of benign conditions and this multi parametric MRI can differentiate between the two in 90 per cent of cases. “We believe that men with a family history of prostate cancer should undergo this screening from the age of 40 and all men between 50 and 70. “In the future there are exciting applications for other diagnoses, such as for breast screening,” he said.
If you’re aged 50-74 you’ll be sent a free bowel cancer screening kit. The kit is simple to use and can detect bowel cancer before any symptoms appear. Around 80 Australians die of bowel cancer every week, but if detected early, up to 90% of cases can be successfully treated. So be sure to complete and return your kit. It’s a gift that could save your life. If you’re over 74 talk to your GP. By 2020 people aged 50-74 will receive a kit every two years.

THE SPIRIT LIVES 2014 - 2018 ANZAC DAY - SATURDAY 25TH APRIL
100 dawns in Herberton By Justin Fris
History came to life in Herberton last Saturday with a Matron, Padre White and Simpson with his donkey recounting WW1 tales.
1883, White had an overwhelming desire to help others ahead of himself. He eventually sought for a sea change, and after a lengthy voyage, disembarked in Albany, at the southern tip of Western Australia in 1912. Although the port of Fremantle was (and still is) the most prominent in the state, many diggers’ last images of Australia were the hilly terrain and coastline of Albany. After witnessing scores of ships leave for the war, White decided that he wanted to go back to Europe and help in his way, as a passionate and understanding man of god. Upon return to Australia, White determined that a special ceremony needed to be implemented in order to pay respect to those who had bravely lost their lives. White pointed out that the initial landing at Gallipoli occurred at dawn in 1915; therefore it was naturally fitting that a special ceremony be held during that timeslot.
RESPECTED dignitaries joined Tablelands residents in commemorating ANZAC Day at the Herberton Cemetery last Saturday. Dubbed ‘One Hundred Dawns’ a special service was held at the gravesite of Padre Arthur Ernest White, who is regarded as the ‘father’ of the ANZAC Day dawn service. The service was facilitated primarily by members of the Herberton Lions and the Tablelands Regional Council; and both played their part in delivering a service that those that have gone before would have been proud of. After observing a remembrance prayer, the masses sung side by side in the melodic ‘Abide with me’, which melted the hearts of several in the crowd. Padre White’s doppelganger (likeness) made an appearance, giving a brief account of some of his war time experiences. Born in London during the year of

THE SPIRIT LIVES 2014 - 2018 ANZAC DAY - SATURDAY 25TH APRIL Generations of service recognised in Chillagoe
Members of the Prien family gathered in Chillagoe on ANZAC Day.
By Justin Fris
MEMBERS of the Prien family have given decades of service in the name of Australia and have defended the nation’s honour with distinction and pride. Last Saturday in Chillagoe, members and relatives of the Prien family gathered together as a mark of 100 years of ANZAC recognition. All up, the family has provided over 90 years of military service, which began with Herbert Julius Prien, back in 1915. Originally born in Parramatta, NSW, Julius ventured to the Far North and worked as a ‘carter’ (horse and cart driver), before departing Mangana and enlisting for war, aged 21 years and six months. Julius served for four years, and is survived by his five children, including his son Bill, who currently resides on the Tablelands. Out of all serving members of the Prien
family, SSGT Morrie Prien served the longest, dedicating 27 years, and had four children of his own. One of his children, son Des, served a further 20 years, enlisting in 1975 and spending five years based in Townsville. His service would take him to Wales, New Zealand and interstate, in a plethora of different roles where he would educate and provide to those around him. Other serving members included: Jim Prien (24 years), Shane Delaney (3 years), Brad Prien (4 years, currently serving), Gnr Oliver Humphreys (3 years, still serving) along with Hugo and Percy Prien, who both served around WW2. After Bill and his wife Val arrived in Chillagoe last Thursday, other members of the Prien family made the trip to join them, in a respectful and noble backdrop, where they could reflect and be proud of their contribution to our nation’s ANZAC history.
ANZAC Day ceremonies in Mt Molloy THE new Cenotaph at Mt Molloy was used for the first time on Saturday to commemorate 100 years of ANZAC. Hundreds of people, both young and old, turned out for both the dawn service and morning parade and service.

New on the Rising Sun screen this week is the excellent drama THE LONGEST RIDE – set in the world of horses and rodeo. Plus the colourful TINKERBELL AND THE LEGEND OF THE NEVERENDING BEAST, from Walt Disney. Continuing for a second great week is the high octane AVENGERS – AGE OF ULTRON, which has had knock reviews and great audience appeal . There's also the last opportunity to see the two excellent family films SHAUN THE SHEEP and SPONGE BOB – SPONGE OUT OF WATER, over the next few days.
AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON
When Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and the Avengers - Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye - are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the mysterious Ultron (voice of James Spader) emerges, the team must reassemble in order to stop the terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff and Pietro Maximoff, as well as an old friend in a new form, named The Vision.
THE LONGEST RIDE
Sophia (Britt Robertson) has landed an internship with a prestigious New York art gallery, but meets Luke Collins (Scott Eastwood), just as he prepares to ride at a Professional Bull Riding event. Ninety-one year old Ira Levinson (Alan Alda) is also on a life-changing course, having lost his wife Ruth some eight years earlier. He has a car accident on his way to Black Mountain, North Carolina and is rescued by Luke and Sophia, who manage to salvage Ira's previous box of old letters. Ira asks her to read them to him. Young Ruth (Oona Chaplin) and Young Ira (Jack Huston) have lived a life filled with many similar challenges to those facing Luke and Sophia. Review by Louise Keller: When it comes to the highs and lows of love and relationships with never-ending twists and turns, complete with tissues, Nicholas Sparks is a proven brand name. Like earlier film adaptations that include The Notebook, Dear John, Safe Haven, Nights in Rodanthe and The Best of Me, The Longest Ride delivers romance, passion, heartbreak and surprises beautifully. It also boasts a superb cast, including the hunky and extremely handsome Scott Eastwood, whose resemblance to his father Clint in his heyday is disconcerting: the smile, the profile, the build. A girl who loves art with splotches and a boy who loves the way she loves the art forms an emotionally dense canvas around which this dual love story about love, sacrifice and compromise is framed. Black Rain screenwriter Craig Bolotin has succinctly adapted Sparks' novel, allowing the flashbacks that act as the inspiration for the contemporary love story to weave seamlessly in and out, enabling us to engage with both pairs of lovers facing similar challenges albeit in totally different circumstances. First up, director George Tillman Jnr quickly establishes the relationship between Sophia (Britt Robertson, lovely), a pretty, go-getter college student and Luke Collins (Eastwood), a champion rodeo rider who is on his way back following a devastating accident a year earlier involving a brute of a bucking bull called Rango. She is not a rodeo type, but when he tells her to keep his cowboy hat after he has wowed the crowd, she is smitten. The way the relationship develops is utterly charming, the surprise being that Luke is an old fashioned kinda guy who gives a girl flowers on a first date and devises romantic surprises. Girls will drool and rightly so. Luke is also a hero - his rescue of the elderly Ira (Alan Alda) after a car accident at night in the rain, is the device that

transports us into the world of the young Ira (Jack Huston) and the love of his life, Ruth (Oona Chaplin). Chaplin is magnetic as Ruth, the warm, outspoken, life affirming Jewish Viennese immigrant who arrives in North Carolina and immediately notices the handsome, shy Ira (Huston, greatly appealing), who is also quietly heroic and loving. She loves dressing up, wants a big family and is passionate about modern art. The sequence involving the young boy who Ruth tells he can be anything he wants to be, is especially moving. As Sophia reads Ira's love letters to Ruth out loud, their relationship from the day they meet in 1940, plays out in flashback. Inevitable comparisons are made between the two love affairs and Ira becomes a confidant as the differences and difficulties between Sophia and Luke become more and more apparent. 'Love requires sacrifice,' Ira tells the young couple, as their future seems impossible. There are tears and fears; decisions are made and consequences met. The fact that each character is so well defined and that we like them so much, has much to do with our involvement and enjoyment of the story. The fact that three cast members have regal Hollywood pedigree is a bonus. Sparks elevates love into the fantasy to which we all aspire and here, both couples love with a ferocious passion, allowing us to be transported into a world in which love is everything and there can only be one person for each of us.
TINKERBELL AND THE LEGEND OF THE NEVERENDING BEAST
Fun and talented animal fairy Fawn believes you can't judge a book by its cover, or an animal by its fangs, so she befriends a huge and mysterious creature known as the NeverBeast. While Tinkerbell and her friends aren't so sure about this scary addition to Pixie Hollow, the elite Scout Fairies set out to capture the monster before he destroys their home. Fawn must trust her heart and take a leap of faith if she hopes to rally the girls to save the NeverBeast.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Where are you Billy? We need stuff done! Now that our member-elect has donned an un-named jersey and taken the field in the QLD Parliament, surely it is time to show the electorate some much needed assurance in which direction this electorate will head. Perhaps a solution or statement as to why southern contractors have won a tender for the reseal works on the Peninsula Development Road? Or whether any assistance will be given to the ailing Cook Shire Council to ensure local workers are employed? Or simply, how will he regain the respect of the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce? The Member for Cook, it's simply not good enough using Facebook or Labor members to spruik your excuses. An elected member of parliament is there to represent their electorate through sunshine or storms. You are also expected to have an operating office with working phones to field concerns for your constituents and quite simply be seen to actively participate in the community. The election was on January 31, almost three months ago, not three days ago. Locky Bensted, Mareeba
Wanted – an effective Australian agricultural policy Australia’s food supplies were once guaranteed by our government’s knowledge that our rural industries were nurtured and promoted

to withstand dumping attacks from imports by importers that call themselves an industry. It used to be that an industry was a unit that built, created or grew a product. Not simply put in an order form. The investment boom in mining over the past 20 or so years made agriculture unimportant to our economy. The windfall from mining could have strengthened all our manufacturing and rural pursuits in stead of letting them fall by the wayside. Make no mistake about this – It was caused by an abject failure of political leadership. The bidding war of political donations that decides government policy makes a mockery of the positions of trust that members of parliament of all persuasions hold. Are we to see some real change in the current backward thinking of our leaders of government or we going to carry on bleating how we need foreign investment to buy up Australian Businesses that have gone broke as a result of past and present government policies? George Adil, Mareeba
Dimbulah Hospital in need of upgrade The Dimbulah Primary Health Care Clinic is past its use by date. Built in 1964, the structure is deteriatoring with no renovations to date because of asbestos. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, patients waiting to see the visiting doctor from Mareeba cannot fit in the tiny waiting room and have to stand outside in the sun or under trees. ditioned. The COAG office is situated in the narrow hallway with limited privacy. The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board acknowledges that the Dimbulah facility is structurally very old and does not lend itself to contemporary health services provision or delivery. It is imperative to have the Dimbulah Primary Health Care Clinic upgraded as it is a major centre for a combination of essential health services. The Dimbulah centres work in conjunction with the Mareeba Hospital (45 kilometres away) and reduces some of the burden from the growing Mareeba facility. Dimbulah residents are aware that the Dimbulah Primary Health Care Centre has been on a priority list with Queensland Health for some time, but to date no direct action on this matter has been forthcoming. It is worth noting that State and Federal Governments have collected billions of dollars in tax revenue from agriculture and mining industries within the Dimbulah district over many decades. It’s time the health department stepped up and supported the delivery and provision of contemporary health services to this rural community. Construction of an up-to-date primary health care clinic would be a good start and very much appreciated by all stakeholders. Gaye Taylor, Dimbulah
Mayor Lee Long is correct Well Possums (as Dame Edna would say) – I am curious! Everyone is castigating the Mayor over her casting vote, but tell me – if it was up to you (or me for that matter) and we had voted;
say “against” a motion put forward, and then had the misfortune to have to use that casting vote why would you change the way you had voted originally? Get real Possums. Lyn Guilfoyle, Atherton
TRC residents must be jealous of MSC Many residents of the Mareeba Shire must be having a quiet chuckle as they witness the almost daily farce that is the Tablelands Regional Council’s continuing saga of public dummy spitting, in-fighting and grandstanding, as we see played out in page after page of the local newspapers. Before de-amalgamation, Mayor Lee Long was never backward with her predictions of dire problems for the Mareeba Shire if there was a “Yes” vote. The new Mareeba Shire Council does indeed have a tough job ahead of it, but at this stage at least, all members must be congratulated on the fact that they have appeared to be a unified group, with a desire to do the best they can for their community. If there have been any heated disagreements, they have been kept “in house” and not constantly aired through the media. I’ll bet there are quite a few residents of the Tablelands Regional Council area who wish they could transfer into their northern neighbours’ shire. Peter Beatts, Mareeba

Safety overhaul of heavy vehicle industry The states peak motoring body has called for the heavy vehicle industry to install lifesaving technology in trucks in a bid to reduce the number of serious crashes. New research, conducted by Monash University Accident Research Centre, found Autonomous Emergency Braking Technology could reduce the number of heavy vehicle crashes by up to 25 percent. RACQ Executive Manager Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said more than 18 percent of Queensland road fatalities last year involved heavy freight vehicles. “Heavy vehicle fatalities are over-represented and we need to do all we can to reduce the number of serious crashes,” Mr Spalding said. “A lot of research in the past has investigated the benefits of fitting crash avoidance technology to light vehicles, but this is the first time we’ve seen evidence of its effects in heavy vehicles.” Mr Spalding said there was also evidence to support the introduction of other crash avoidance technology. “Lane departure warning systems, electronic stability control and fatigue warning systems were also examined and found to prevent as much as six percent of heavy vehicle fatalities nationwide,” he said. Mr Spalding said with the increase in heavy vehicle registrations across Australia expected, now was the time to act. “We are only going to be seeing more heavy vehicles on our roads in the future which risks even more serious or fatal crashes,” he said. “Truck drivers are working under intense deadlines and are often driving long distances on roads that aren’t always in the best condition. “By choosing vehicles with the latest safety technology, the industry can help make their jobs safer.”

A step forward for Biofuel
Disturbing trend as motorcycle deaths soar on roads The RACQ has highlighted a worrying trend in motorcycle fatalities, with the number of deaths up by more than 50 percent on the same time last year. The State’s peak motoring body emphasised the need to reinforce the importance of motorcycle safety to Queensland’s road users. RACQ Executive Manager Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said while the overall road toll was 36, similar to last year’s record low, the number of motorcycle deaths was already at 12 which was a concern. “We’re worried about just how quickly the motorcycle fatality count is growing,” Mr Spalding said. “Motorcycles aren’t as visible on the roads as cars and trucks, and riding a motorbike doesn’t offer the same level of protection as being inside of a car. “Research shows they’re four times more likely to be involved in deadly crashes than cars, and more than half of all motorbike crashes re-

sult in hospitalisation or death.” Mr Spalding said RACQ would like to see motorcycle safety given greater attention in government road safety messaging this year. “It’s about keeping safety top of mind for both motorcyclists and motorists, and media messages and safety campaigns can make a positive difference,” he said. Mr Spalding said there were some simple things all road users could do to help keep everyone safe. “If drivers take an extra moment to look out for motorcyclists before manoeuvring and riders always adopt safe and defensive riding habits we can help cut the crash risk,” he said. “You don’t get another chance when you come off a motorbike. Regardless of who is right or wrong – the motorcyclist is going to come off second best.”

Minister for Energy Mark Bailey recently announced plans to investigate the opportunities to expand Queensland’s Biofuel industry, pointing to the potential economic and environmental benefits increased local ethanol and bio-diesel production may have. RACQ Executive Manager Public Policy Michael Roth said 10 percent of Queensland petrol sales were already E10, so motorists were familiar with the blended fuel. “Motorists have become more comfortable in recent years with using ethanol-blended fuels, with E10 widely available in south east Queensland,” Mr Roth said. “Previous governments have sought to introduce an ethanol mandate but we agree that it’s time for further discussion on the issue.” Mr Roth said RACQ supported E10 being an option in Queensland but that it was critical for motorists to be able to choose their preferred fuel at the bowser. “Any ethanol mandate should not be set so high that service stations remove regular ULP as an option, as has occurred in parts of NSW,” he said. “We estimate up to 15 percent of vehicles in Queensland are not compatible with E10 and it would be unfair to force these motorists to pay extra for premium unleaded.”

Bulls tranquilise Tigers in FFA Cup tie
By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba United Football Club advanced further into Football Federation Australia Cup qualifying, after a 2-0 win over Edge Hill United at a nippy Borzi Park last Wednesday night. A goal in each half for the home side blunted any potential revival from the travelling Tigers, although it wasn’t always easy going. MUFC coach Alex Srhoj named an unchanged line-up for the third game in a row, with his men keen to pocket another victory. As both sides walked onto the pitch, you could feel the air change. Cup football is entirely different to league football and the fans were treated as such. The Tigers were resolute early- playing a highly compressed defensive line- which interrupted the Bulls’ high octane passing movement.
Denied possession for lengthy periods, the Tigers failed to utilise this dominance going forward, with Bulls keeper Julian Madrid imposing himself in the box when required. Larry Maggio had the Bulls’ first real chance on goal, when he fired a neat header which beat Tigers keeper Sam Ferguson, but also the crossbar. Both sides traded opportunities on the 25th minute mark, with the match sporting a see-saw hue. Tigers midfielder Brandon Cully was sensational down the flanks for the visitors, although he routinely lacked support from his strikers. The Tigers, who had barely troubled Madrid, rattled the post from a long range effort, before David Ruiz had two chances to find the net in quick succession, but was denied both times. After a solid build up of first touch passing, Bulls midfielder Wayne Srhoj was brought down in a meaty challenge and posed with a set-piece opportunity from 25m out, with almost no angle to speak of. Talent always rises to the surface, with Srhoj adding to his goal scoring tally of late, through a rifled shot that would have put a marksman to shame. After going a goal down, Tigers sharp shooter Daniel Viccars came to life, appearing to be the only man capable of getting his side back into the game. There were plenty of observant eyes in the stands, with Stratford Dolphins coach Stuart Veall taking notes on proceedings with his coaching staff. Veall’s men will face the Bulls in both cup and league in coming weeks; therefore the trip to Mareeba had extreme significance. One thing that puzzled much of the crowd after half time, was
the Tigers’ reluctance to play more strikers in attack. On several occasions, the visitors had between five and six players behind the ball, and had only one striker forward of the play when they regained possession. This played into the home side’s favour, who spurned a flurry of chances which could have put the game to bed. Of all the chances, the best fell to Leonardo Cisterni, who recovered a dreadful goal kick and miscued his shot wide with the goal at his mercy. With Cisterni rewarded his coach a few minutes later in the 66th minute, when he soared above a crowd of defenders in the box and placed his header beyond an outstretched Ferguson. The tie lost much of its zest after that, with both sides content to pass the ball around risk-free and see out the remainder of the match. MUFC coach Alex Srhoj was delighted with the result after the match, but reaffirmed that his side needs to convert more chances into goals. “I’m pretty happy,” he said. “I think we were in control most of the game and I’m proud of the boys with their effort. “We stuck to our play and some of our one-touch stuff was brilliant. Tonight is perfect preparation for the weekend, luckily we have four days now to recover and it is very much a job well done.” Srhoj commended the Tigers on their ability to stifle his side’s passing game, but felt his men adapted as the match wore on. “We sort of knew (compact defence) Edge Hill was going to do that,” he said. “They are typically a tough side as they are not easy to break down. “To their credit they still tried to play tonight, they kept their shape, even under pressure from us. We were made to maybe adjust to it a little bit, but once we did, I think we were comfortable.” Wayne Srhoj’s impact on the squad was also touched on by his coach, who said he was a ‘once in a generation’ type of player. “A lot of these boys should really enjoy their time with him,” he said. “He’s a once in a generation type of player and it’s a great opportunity for our younger players to learn off one of the best players we have seen in FNQ.”
Bulls knock off Comets
The Mareeba Bulls fought through their biggest test of the year so far, twice coming from a goal down to win 4-3 at Petersen Park, against the Southside Comets, last Sunday. Two goals from Robert Pendenza, a pearl of a striker from David Ruiz and a back post header was enough for the away team to take all three points against the plucky Comets, who showed they will be a tough prospect especially at home. The Comets opened the scoring catching the Bulls on the break, but shortly after David Ruiz let fly from 30 yards and the Bulls drew level. Robert Pendenza then got his first in the 26th Minute to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead, before Comets midfielder Mitch Bevan pulled out the party tricks with a effort from just over half way just beating Bulls keeper Julian Madrid to leave the scores locked 2-2 at the break. In the second period the Bulls again enjoyed majority of the possession, but were unable to find a way through the resolute Comets defence and paid the price again on
the counter as the Comets hit the lead at the 60th minute. But the Bulls clawed their way back with Mete scoring in the 69th minute to draw level, before Pendenza again popped up to give the Bulls the lead in the 81st minute. The Bulls were made to fight to the end, and showed their premiership winning qualities with coach Alex Srhoj pleased with the away sides ability to overcome a few obstacles and come out on top. “It was tough, they enjoyed some luck, we had everything against us, but we found a way, battled our way through and came out on top,” said Srhoj. “I could not be more proud of the effort and fight, but more importantly, we played our football through them and found a answer.” With the Stratford Dolphins and Leichardt Lions drawing on Sunday, the Bulls have opened up a two point lead at the top of the FNQ Premier league. The Bulls now host the Stratford Dolphins at home this Saturday.

Conner Matthews was near faultless during round one of the North Queensland Interclub Road Race Championship.
chequered flag
CONNER Matthews has made an enterprising start to the North Queensland Interclub Road Race Championship, after taking out round one at Whitsunday Raceway in Proserpine. Involved in three races over the corresponding weekend, Conner went a faultless three for three from poll position on the grid. As an added bonus for the youngster, all of his times across the weekend were up in the ilk of personal best billing. Whitsunday Raceway holds many special memories for Conner, who came 2nd overall in the Australian junior titles held there last year. The next round of the championship will head to Townsville on June 27, before Mareeba will get a chance to cheer Conner on at the August 2 meet.

Gladiators continue winning streak By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba Gladiators made it two wins on the bounce last Saturday, defeating Yarrabah 31-30 in a pulsating contest at Jilara Oval. Deadlocked at 30-all in the dying embers of battle, Gladiators winger Rhylan Rees sank his slipper into a 35m field goal, which broke Yarrabah hearts all around. In a scrappy affair, the visitors were ravaged from injury from the outset, which meant a shuffling of their starting squad. Northern Pride squad member Alex Starmer continued his gradual path back into the Intrust Super Cup, with another solid hit out for the Gladiators. Gladiators club president Andrew Foster said the win was encouraging for David Grainer’s men, who appear revitalised
since the Easter break. “Overall the match was a solid standard of A-grade footy,” he said. “We were able to hang in there and score a few opportunistic tries.” Foster added that Grainer has decided to relinquish his playing commitments in order to maximise his coaching experience from the bench. The Gladiators reserves had a torrid day at the office, receiving a 64-16 thumping. The U/18’s applied themselves admirably, despite going down 36-14. It was all smiles again for the Malanda/ Mareeba Eels in the second division, after they defeated Yarrabah in a 40-30 attacking showcase. Mareeba will again hit the road this weekend, where they will travel to Edmonton. Kickoff is at 4.30pm on Saturday afternoon.
Heartbreak for valiant Roosters By Justin Fris
THE Atherton Roosters were effectively left at rugby league’s altar last Friday night, after a narrow 38-33 loss to Brothers Cairns last Friday night. Jamie Blain’s men have been full of confidence since Easter Thursday, with solid showings against the CDRL’s elite. This match was no different, with the Roosters skipping to an early 18-0 lead, which would have raised concerns for much of the home faithful. However any side coached by Chey Bird will not admit defeat, with the Roosters unable to hold on in the final minute of the game. The plucky visitors had scored a vital
field goal in the 78th minute, which restored their lead, after the home side had stormed home with a wet sail. However a charged down kick in the wrong half of the field blessed the hosts with fantastic field position and ultimately victory. Atherton Roosters senior official Darryl Day said Blain was extremely pleased with his side’s heart and fighting spirit. “Dean Howard also played one of the best games so far for the club,” he added. “Darren Grant and Adam Molloy were also really good for us.” The Roosters face another heavyweight bout this Sunday, where they will travel to Vico Oval and face the Kangaroos.
Second division Bulls dominate Mareeba Bulls second division men had an expected 5-1 win against the Southside Comets last Friday night. The Mareeba boys dominated with numerous chances, but failed to convert them all. Veterans Sandro Soncin and Robert Battistin made a comeback after 10 years and were welcomed back to the field. Adrian Vecchio-Ruggeri scored the goal
of the season with a thunderous drive from just inside his own half with the ball dipping just under the crossbar. Keeper Mark Plowman had an outstanding night pulling off some world class saves in the box. Match goal scorers were Mario Terranova (2), Sandro Soncin (1), Jacob Day (1) and Adrian Vecchio -Ruggeri (1).
Red Devils catch Barras for dinner
The Stingrays are keen to defend their 2014 title and are currently tied with the Red Devils in 1st place. By Justin Fris
THE Red Devils consolidated their title aspirations, after a clinical 67-42 victory over the Barras in last Thursday night’s round eight match up. Andy Harris was nothing short of exceptional in the victory, with his speed and offensive rebounding staples to his side’s success. The Barras, who fielded a vastly different line-up, never wavered in enthusiasm and worked together as a cohesive unit until the final whistle. Superb shooting is nothing new for the Devils and their first quarter typified this trend. Going 10/15 really set a good tone for the game, with players making calculated baskets. Barras players refused to let discouragement rule over them, and gradually worked their way back into the contest by quarter time, only trailing 20-14. It was during the second quarter when Harris began to stamp his authority on the match. His appetite for competing for every pass was capitalised by his teammates.
Clinton Cameron was the primary scoring focus for the home side, finishing with 22 points on the night. Cameron was ably supported by Juni Bordeos, who continued his recent good form with 21 points, which covered for the dynamic Clinton Eales who didn’t play. Across the other side, Tommy Harvey was a shining light for the Barras, finishing with a game high 31 points. Leading 39-25 at the half, the Red Devils didn’t really need to break stride in the second half, but the Barras showed signs toward the end that they can compete against the upper echelons of the table. The MBA Deadleys got a critical victory against Express, recording a 38-25 win. Joshua McAulay was best afield for the winners with 12 points, with the Cater brothers also playing a solid role in proceedings. Daniel Vecchio-Ruggeri played a lone hand for Express, scoring 15 points and doing all he could in trying to turn the tide. Victory saw the MBA Deadleys create a four point gap in 3rd place ahead of Express, with seven rounds left to play. In the final fixture of the evening, the Stingrays held equal top billing with the Red Devils, after defeating the Comets 43-34. Tyson Tatti backed up from an earlier match and starred for the ‘Rays with 14 points, while Fabio Nocilla top scored for the Comets with 18 points.
