TRC warns of slow down By Boyd Robertson

T

he project manager for the Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) upcoming de-amalgamation has warned of an impending drop in council service levels as middle management are burdened with the task of splitting the organisation’s staff and resources. Council’s chief executive however played down fears that dayto-day council services will be impacted. De-amalgamation project manager Brett De Chastel told council at the August 1 meeting that “all TRC management staff” would be saddled with extra work for several months as they are sorted into small working teams to fine-tune the transition in areas like asset management and payroll. This includes finding holes left in each department after the split and sourcing or training replacements before the official transition on January 1, 2014. The working teams will be formed in early September and their work is expected to be completed by the end of November.

HOT PRICE!

“What we’re saying is that over the next three months a lot of staff will be tied up getting the new council ready, and that’s going to impact their workload,” Mr De Chastel said. “They are going to be tied up with meetings and other extra work and obviously it’s going to make it harder for them to get back to people and do their other duties at the same time. “We hope that day-to-day services won’t be affected.” Council chief executive Ian Church admitted that there would be a noticeable slowdown in some parts of council customer service. “Some customers will notice it but we’re hoping that most won’t,” he said. Mr Church said residents did not need to worry about a loss of general council services like and that most impacts would be internal. “I don’t believe that will be the case,” he said. “This is going to impact more behind the scenes of things in middle management on longer-term internal projects... it won’t things like mowing and garbage disposal. We are going to do everything possible to prioritise work so we LOT 206 CATHERINE ATHERTON DR.

have a minimum of impact on daily customer service.” Transfer manager Rod Ferguson explained that the working teams would “ensure both councils have a reliable level of service” after the split. “It’s a matter of identifying what skilled staff come across to Mareeba and which stay in the TRC,” he said. “In some departments it will be relatively quick but in others it might take some time.” Mr Ferguson said the extra workload was an inevitable part of de-amalgamation. “This is what de-amalgamation was always going to be,” he said. “You can’t just split; you have to make sure that both councils are still providing service to their communities.” The final list of which staff will be transferred to the new Mareeba Shire Council and which staff will remain with the TRC is expected to be complete by the end of August. The TRC employs about 570 full-time equivalent staff, and has engaged “a local firm” to provide employee support during the transition, according to Mr De Chastel’s August 1 report.

Malanda woman fights for life in Brisbane hospital By Boyd Robertson

A Tableland community support organisation has pulled together to support a sick young mother in a Brisbane hospital. Malanda woman Leah Hare, 21, was taken to the intensive care unit of the Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane after suffering major heart problems around the birth of her son Jayden about 10 weeks ago. Experiencing chest pains and shortness of breath, Leah was taken to Townsville Hospital to give birth to Jayden before being emergency airlifted to Prince Charles soon after. Jayden was delivered by C-section healthy and is doing fine but Leah’s left ventricle, responsible for pumping blood out of the heart, has virtually failed and the rest of her heart has weakened. Surgeons at Prince Charles performed hours of openheart surgery and installed a ventricular assist device (VAD) in Leah’s heart in order to save her life. The VAD is battery-powered and keeps her blood moving in a constant stream (meaning she has no pulse) but is only a temporary solution. While she has partially recovered and has been released from intensive care, Leah’s situation remains precarious and she will need a heart transplant, and is still waiting for admission to the waiting list for the procedure. She has also suffered lung infections and other complications while in hospital. Leah’s parents David and Theresa have moved to Brisbane along with Jayden’s father Nathan to provide support for Leah in hospital, finding a house in the suburb of Chermside to live in while she recovers. To support the family during this difficult time, the Eacham Community Health Organisation (ECHO) will hold a fundraising night at the Malanda Hotel on August 31. The group is a running a triva contest on the night in addition to raffling prizes donated from local businesses in order to raise funds that will go to the Hares for living expenses. Many other groups and organisations are also supporting the Hares family, including their employers who have kept their jobs secure while they are away. David Hare, his voice breaking at times, said the family had been “blown out of the water” by the level of support from the community. “It’s really overwhelming, I can’t explain how much it means to us,” he said. “There’s so many people to thank – ECHO, the RSL, the Lions Club, Malanda Hotel, there’s so many of them. It’s been hard for all of us.” David said Leah was slowly recovering but had been clinging to life at times. “She hasn’t had a very good time of it but she’s up and moving around now,” he said. “She was very critical – we nearly lost her a couple of times.” “Leah’s got to have so much strength to get through this like she has, she’s such a strong young woman.” ECHO volunteer Evelyne Lewiston said the whole Hare family were “battlers” and needed all the help they could get. Anyone wanting to donate or help out with the Hare’s cause can contact Ms Lewiston on 4096 6634.

Mutchilba State Primary School prep students Seth Walmsley, Laine Armstrong and Charlie Cross hold the two mysterious trophies.

School’s search for trophy info By Boyd Robertson Staff at Mutchilba State Primary School are appealing to the community for help in solving one of the school’s oldest mysteries ahead of a reunion planned for next year. Principal Luke Morris and former principal Lyne Nowell are asking for any information on two handmade trophies that have been at the school longer than anyone can remember. The trophies are etched “Mutchilba Sports Day” in permanent marker, with one dedicated to “Bocce Champions” and the other to the “Champion Soccer Team”. The bocce trophy is about 30 centimetres tall and weighs about 2.75 kilograms, while the smaller soccer trophy is about 20 centimetres tall and weighs about 1.25 kilograms. Both are made from what appears to be farming equipment and finished in silver spray paint. No-one knows where they came from, not even long-term staff member Anne Adams, who has been at the school for 18 years. “To me, it looks like they could be made from engine parts, perhaps the fuel or oil filter from a tractor,” Ms Adams said. ‘They’ve definitely been here longer than me.” The quest for answers on the mysterious trophies is part of a search for historical information before a planned major reunion to celebrate the school’s 75th anniversary next year. “We’re asking for anyone in the community that

might know something about the trophies to come forward and tell us,” Mr Morris said. “There’s quite a bit of cultural diversity around here, bocce was brought over by Italian immigrants and soccer is from Europe as well. “We’re trying to find out as much as possible – we also have a time capsule buried in the garden somewhere but nobody knows where it is exactly.” The task of organising next year’s reunion has fallen to Ms Nowell, who has already made contact with several of the school’s very first students, including Gino Piagno, now 86. Mr Piagno was in Year 3 when the school was first established in 1939. His tenure at the school was cut short in 1940 when the school’s only teacher at the time joined the RAAF for the duration of the Second World War. Mr Piagno, who at the age of 10 worked fulltime at his family’s tobacco farm at Tabacum most of the week, said much has changed in the area since he was at the school. “There’s been big changes, those were tough days,” he said. “We worked and we didn’t know how hard it was – I look back now and I think ‘how did we survive?’ It is different now – kids these days are treated like kids.” Mr Piagno, who immigrated from Italy at the age of 6, has no memory of the trophies, but did mention that there was no bocce played at the school in his day.

Work begins on new fire station

AFTER more than a decade of posturing and near misses, construction of a new fire station for Mareeba has begun. Cairns-based Richard Field Constructions turned the first sod for the new fire station on August 2. The $3.3m station will be built on Stateowned land between Byrnes and Mammino Streets, alongside the Mareeba Information Centre. Richard Field Constructions will have five full-time employees working on the site as well as a series of sub-contractors. Rob McConkey, the site manager for the development, said the first stage of the project would be to lay a civil pad before putting the concrete slab down. A civil pad will build up the site with about one metre of dirt to assist with stormwater drainage. “The civil pad is the first step and then we’ll keep working through until the whole thing is done,” Mr McConkey said. “At this stage if everything goes to plan it should be done by February.” The existing Mareeba Fire Station was built in 1928 and is one of the oldest perma-

nent stations in Queensland. Located in the middle of Mareeba’s central business district, getting trucks through the middle of town quickly to respond to emergencies has been an ongoing problem for firefighters. Included in the new station will be facilities for a minimum of 10 full-time officers and 18 auxiliary officers, a staff training area and gym as well as off-street car parking for staff and visitors. Station officer Mario Cocco said the firies were delighted work on the station had begun. “Staff at Mareeba Fire Station are very happy to see the first soil turned at the new station,” he said. The Express made repeated attempts to contact Member for Cook David Kempton for comment. Mr Kempton failed to respond by deadline but former Member for Tablelands and Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long said construction of the new station was long overdue. “I remember this first came up back in 2001 when I was in State Government and it is great to see that it has finally happened. Truthfully, it should have happened years ago,” Cr Lee Long said.

MAREEBA PLAZA SHOPPING CENTRE OPEN MONDAY - SATURDAY

“The fire station in Mareeba at the moment is so outdated. The size of the opening for the trucks isn’t large enough, the building is falling down and the trucks have to try to get out to emergencies through the main street.” The project is being funded by the State Government.

Mens Shed finds a home THE Kuranda Men’s Shed has been given a building by Tablelands Regional Council. “The Council has taken on board a recommendation from the Kuranda Community Advisory Committee, and approved a demountable building presently located on the Kuranda Community Precinct for their use,” Mayor Rosa Lee Long said. The organisation has until December 31 to remove the building, at no cost to council to an alternative site. Sugar company starts up Sugar Research Australia Limited (SRA) – the Australian sugarcane industry’s new research, development and extension (RD&E) industry-owned company – commenced operations on August 5. The formation of SRA was a key element of the Sugar RD&E Reform package which was undertaken to streamline and modernise the industry’s research landscape.

The Australian Sugar Industry Alliance (ASA), backed by the Australian Sugar Milling Council and CANEGROWERS Australia, has steadfastly focused on delivering the reforms since 2011 said Mr John Pratt, Chairman ASA. “The launch of SRA is a real demonstration of our industry working together to build a strong, viable and sustainable research investment platform for grower and milling businesses, and the many regional communities that sugarcane supports,” said Mr Pratt. “The outcome of the SugarPoll 2012 was a clear vote of approval by the vast majority of industry stakeholders for the changes to structures and the approach to RD&E in our industry.” Funded by a statutory levy – 35 cents per tonne – paid equally by grower and milling businesses, SRA will also attract matching funds from the Commonwealth Government and funds from the Queensland Government. SRA will operate with a budget

of around $34 million per annum of which approximately $18 million will be available for contestable research. The first round of contestable funded projects is expected to commence on 1 January 2014.

Have your say on speed limits Tablelanders can go online to nominate a road as part of the State Government’s review of speed limits. Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said this will be the first major review of speed limits in Queensland since the introduction of mobile speed cameras in 1997. “The purpose of this review is to apply consistent speed limits across the state to make roads safer for all road users,” he said. “Currently reviews are conducted in different regions of the state, however this is the first time we’ve called for nominations as part of these reviews.” After all submissions are received, Transport and Main Roads will work with local councils to identify the top 100 roads. The review is expected to take six months and the results will be published. Submissions can be made online at www. tmr.qld.gov.au/SpeedLimitReview until Friday, 6 September or posted to Speed Limit Review, PO Box 673, Fortitude Valley 4006.

club news Monthly catch-up with mAREEBA ROTARY The Mareeba Rodeo and Show is over for another year and as always the event showcases a wide range of skills vital to our rural community. Rotarians contributed through manning the gates to the Rodeo grounds, judging the street parade and of course, sponsoring Rodeo Queen entrant, the lovely Kaitlyn Booth. Congratulations to Queen Alessia Aloia. You will represent our community with pride. In recent weeks, members were inspired by a presentation by Lesa Pershouse and Hayley Shelton who recently escorted youth representatives from both the Mareeba SS Earlyact and Mareeba SHS Atherton SHS interact clubs to attend PeaceJam in Timor Leste The mission of the PeaceJam Foundation is to create young leaders committed to positive change in themselves, their communities and the world through the inspiration of Nobel Peace Laureates who pass on the spirit, skills, and wisdom. Peace Jam has been in operation throughout the world since 1993. PeaceJam's program is built on three simple ideas: Education, Inspiration, and Action. Youth members return to their home communities and PeaceJam puts youth in the authentic position of being peacemakers and peace builders who address the most pressing issues of our time in both local and global communities. Our delegation of Tablelands youth were educated about the realities of living in Timor Leste and participated in a local clean-up project. Throughout PeaceJam, our delegation were supported by the local Rotaractors who acted as guides, translators and interpreters. Overwhelmed by the dedication of the young people who

volunteered their time to make our delegation feel welcome, Lesa and Hayley are seeking support to sponsor some of the Rotaractors to come to Australia to experience our lifestyle and to hone their English skills. In recent years, Mareeba Rotary, has grown its membership by becoming a club for all ages in our community. The club now has over 39 active members volunteering their time in our community to improve the lives of others. In the near future you will notice some small changes to the signage of the club to accompany the club’s logo of “Create, Inspire and Innovate” Our members will be out in our community at a number of community events over the next month. The Mareeba Markets (10/8) and the Annual Mareeba Warbard Airshow (18/8). Please come along to and support these events and say hello to our volunteer members who will be able to supply you with burgers and drinks. You contribution adds to our fundraising that enables us to help our local and wider communities. If you are interested in joining the energetic band of local volunteers as Rotary members a special membership night is being held on Wednesday 7 August at the Mareeba Bowls Club. Our District Governor, Tony Goddard will be joining us or a game of Barefoot Bowls commencing at 6.15pm. Two Mareeba parks to be upgraded By Boyd Robertson The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) will upgrade two public parks in Mareeba with the aim of complementing future community events. Arnold Park, located between Constance Street and Walsh Street, will have an extra temporary shade sail installed for the upcoming Mareeba Multicultural Festival. Eales Park, adjacent to the Davies Park football grounds, will be fenced off to expand parking capacity for grey nomads during future Christmas in July events and increase security for vehicles parked there during football games. The upgrades were approved at the August 1 Tablelands Regional Council meeting. Construction of the Arnold Park shade is currently out

to tender, with about $14,000 committed for the project from the council-maintained Arnold Park reserve. This figure was revised from an initial council estimate of $7,200 as quotes were received from potential contractors. The proposed design for a single structure temporary structure to be added to existing shade sails that are installed for each festival and removed afterwards. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said the shade sail would enhance people’s enjoyment of the event. “This will absolutely make a difference, people are going to be protected from the sun and be able to enjoy themselves more at the Festival,” she said. “It’s coming out of a dedicated fund for Arnold Park which means it won’t affect the council budget. It’s a case of ‘if you have the funds, you may as well use them.”

CLEALL’S

Robyn Smith gives her son Jack a lift at Granite Gorge Nature Park on Friday night. Jack has made a full recovery since being rescued by a local couple on July 5.

Jack returns to thank rescuers

“It was horrifying. I know I wouldn’t have been able to get there quick enough [to save him],” she said. In the chaotic aftermath of the fall, police, fire-fighters, ambos and a doctor from the Royal Flying Doctor Service attended the scene as Jack slipped in and out of consciousness. Spooked by the helicopter, Jack – who is also autistic – was transferred by ambulance to the Mareeba Hospital in a stable condition and was treated for superficial head wounds. Since returning home to Charters Towers, Robyn has been keeping Leah up to date on Jack’s recovery through a series of emails. The family got the chance to thank Leah and Chad in person last weekend. “These people are absolute legends,” said Mr Smith. “We can never repay what you did for our family.” Chad said: “We did what anyone else would have done if they had been there,” he said. Mrs Smith said she wished to thank everyone who had helped on the day, including park owners Colleen and Andrew Bryde, the staff at Mareeba Hospital as well as the various agencies that attended the scene on the day.

By Ryan Groube As the sun dipped beneath the horizon at Granite Gorge on August 2, a young man with a rare brain disorder was belatedly introduced to the two strangers who had saved his life a month earlier. On July 5, Trinity Beach couple Chad Donohue and Leah Nugent pulled Jack Smith, 17, from a shallow pool of water where he was having a seizure. Moments earlier, Jack had been following his siblings along an outcrop at Granite Gorge Nature Park when he slipped on a rock and fell about five metres into a crevasse landing face first. At birth, Jack was diagnosed with neuronal migration disorder, a disease of the brain which can induce seizures. A heavy knock to the head during the fall is believed to have triggered the seizure. Chad and Leah had been walking their dogs below the outcrop and were first on the scene. Together they managed to pull him to safety. Jack’s mother Robyn responded to Chad’s cries for help and slid down the rock face to help her son. She admitted that if there had been no one else there she would have arrived too late to save her son from drowning.

No support for arts community As stated in the papers recently, Mareeba Art Society stepped into its second half century with its annual art show. Thanks to the artists that exhibited their works and the small but willing band of members and helpers that ensured that everything went well. The art works were down in number, but of a good standard. Public attendance was also down this year. This is probably due to a growing trend in both public and official apathy to events run by local communities, especially the arts. It was very disappointing to note that none of our local councillors, politicians or press saw fit to attend the opening or closing nights. This is a once a year event, and as stated, has been for more than 50 years, it would be good to see representatives of the community attend. The Mareeba Arts Society has worked hard over many years to give Mareeba it’s only artistic outlet. It is very sad to see that so few people take advantage of this long running group. Many in the community may not realise that, over the years, not only have the group run the annual art show, which it might be added, has helped many talented artist to go on to bigger and better things but it has also managed to raise funds to build not one but two buildings. The largest of these buildings is used to display and sell locally made arts and crafts. Alongside the shop is the newly opened “Gallery 58”. This gallery is for use by artists and craftspersons to hold exhibition of their works. It is free for them to exhibit. The second building is for use as a workshop. This is also available for anyone that might wish to run any form of art or craft classes. It is hoped that there are people out in

Tremendous performance On Sunday afternoon, August 4, I was lucky enough to attend a most wonderful orchestral music performance, all for the cost of a gold coin donation. The musicians, and I use that term deliberately, were all from Years 6 to 9, and attended a wide variety of state, catholic and independent schools from the Cairns and Tableland region. These young musicians had participated in a whole weekend of workshops that covered woodwind, brass, percussion and strings, at St Mary’s College in Cairns. Personnel from the Griffiths University’s Conservatory of Music ran the program which is called the, “State Honours Ensemble Program”, and has been going for 10 years. To be in the audience and witness the talent of these young people was indeed a privilege. The high achievers in our schools, like these, need to be supported and encouraged. Unfortunately, with the current emphasis on a narrow curriculum which is “tested” to extremes, and must appear absolutely boring to students with any amount of creativity, these wonderfully talented kids will probably not even be acknowledged at their respective schools tomorrow. I can personally verify that there are musical instruments growing mould in storerooms in some Queensland Schools, and this is simply because Music, the Arts, Languages Other Than English and Physical Education are all being neglected : the whole emphasis is on NAPLAN, the results of which decide the funding given to schools. No end in sight to Range Road works commuters travelling between Cairns and the Tableland will continue to experience delays on the Kuranda Range Road despite a major roadworks program nearing completion. A $12.6 million dollar slope stabilisation project is on track to be completed by the end of the month, weather permitting. The project has dragged on well past the initial completion deadline and has seen commuters delayed at works sites for up to 15 minutes. The Express can reveal that de-

spite the project wrapping up another major slope stabilisation project will begin almost immediately. “The unprecedented reconstruction effort on the Far North’s roads will continue on Kuranda Range later this year,” a spokesperson from Transport and Main Roads said. “We will call tenders for future slope stabilisation works in early August to repair damage from wet weather in 2011 and 2012. “This will include sites where trees and landslips closed the road intermittently in mid-March 2012. “We understand the importance of the road, particularly for daily

commuters and industry, and will work with the successful contractor to minimise disruptions, where possible.” The work is designed to protect the road by stabilising slopes to reduce the likelihood of rockfalls and landslides. The reconstruction work is being delivered under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), a joint federal and state initiative. “We thank motorists for their cooperation and patience while these important repairs are being carried out,” the TMR spokesperson said.

A white Christmas truly is an unforgettable event. I will be escorting you throughout your journey. We have lots of free time to explore and soak in the atmosphere. No rush or stress, that’s my motto, that is why we have lots of 2 and 3 night stays. We are going to visit many magical Christmas markets and festivals which are held in historic places like castles, cobblestoned villages and also in enchanted forests. We’ll be able to enjoy scrumptious winter treats, like hot roasted sugar coated almonds, roasted chestnuts, warm Gluehwein, traditional Christmas biscuits and lots more. I am really looking forward to the concert in the amazing cathedral of Passau on the world’s biggest organ. We will be going off the busy tourist trail and will be meeting many locals that can’t wait to share their Christmas magic with you. I look forward to showing you this beautiful part of the world. Nina Grant has signed up to SunWater’s emegency notification system.

By Ryan Groube SunWater has called for residents living downstream of Tinaroo Dam to “opt in” to an emergency notification system. In the event of a flood, chemical spill or even a earthquake at Tinaroo Dam SunWater will send an email, text message or call residents living up to 10 kilometres downstream. A spokesperson from SunWater said the emergency notification system had been in place for “many years” and that SunWater had resolved to issue an annual campaign to ensure that it had as many residents as possible on its register. “SunWater implemented this system of advertising interest as an outcome from the recommended action following the Queensland Flood Commission of Inquiry in 2011,” the spokesperson said. “Notifications are issued via SMS, email or phone call depending on each resident's preferred method. The decision to call is triggered by dam spilling events that active the dam’s Emergency Action Plan. “The messages are designed to be an early alert that an issue has occurred at the dams, for example that they have commenced spilling. If evacuations are required

then the emergency services would normally issue the evacuation order.” Nina Grant lives within the 10km catchment zone and has registered with the emergency notification system. “I never walk around thinking that the dam is going to burst but if something ever did go wrong it is good that they have a system in place,” she said. “I trust that they [SunWater] have a good management system in place but I don't see any reason why people wouldn't sign up for this system.” Since the emergency notification system was implemented SunWater have issued three alerts that spilling of the dam was likely. For residents living outside the 10km zone, responsibility for informing residents of an emergency rests with the Local Disaster Management Group. “SunWater's system is specifically targeted at those people that are in close proximity to the dams where the local disaster management groups might not have sufficient time to react,” the SunWater spokesperson said. Residents who have registered previously do not need to register again. Registrations can be lodged at www. sunwater.com.au or by calling the SunWater Customer Support Team on 13 15 89 before August 16, 2013.

The Mareeba Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank provided $10,000 for QT’s Childcare and Kindergarten to purchase an electronic whiteboard. In addition the funds have helped install a hydroponic garden and purchase more computers. As part of the $60,000 kindy grant program, the centre held a celebration last week to thank the bank. The kids put on a play and performed Russian dancing as part of the fun. I have wanted to do a garden at the kindy for some time, said Siale Jenkins, QT’s Kindy Director. “This grant has helped us so much and we are very grateful for the support”. Community Bank Chairman, Mr Gilbert Teitzel said “the board is very proud to have been able to help and it is great to see the money deliver such positive outcomes for the kids”.

Tableland International Singers performed over the weekend at the Ingham Australian Italian Festival for the second year in a row. They performed Italian music which included traditional, folk and pop, as well as the Coro Di Schiavi (chorus of the Hebrew slaves). The singers were so popular last year that festival organisers doubled their performance time this year over the two days. Local Mareeba singers Kiara Cabassi sang Amore and Marina while Leesa Gray performed Hallelujah in spanish and O Sole Mio. Mirella Niceforo is the guitarist for the choir with Pam Strelnikoff on the piano and Millie Niceforo the conductor.

Bendigo Bank supports Youth Summit Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank sent their two Junior Observers to the Magic Moments Youth Summit at Noosa over the holidays. Mareeba State High School students Selena Anziliero and Liam Posselt (pictured left) were appointed as Junior Observers in February 2013 and attend parts of monthly board meetings and help out with sponsorships that the Community Bank supports. “Supporting local youth is a key priority for our board, and the Youth Summit was an ideal opportunity for Liam and Selena to learn leadership skills and listen to internationally renowned guest speakers”, Said Chairman

Mr Gilbert Teitzel”. “The speakers were the highlight for me” said Selena. “We heard motivational speakers and self-made millionaires – it was really interesting and inspirational. The information they shared with us stays with you for ever and I find myself using it to motivate myself all the time.” Liam said the summit was a great opportunity to learn leadership and life skills, and to meet like-minded students from the Bendigo Community Bank network. The camp went for five days and over 100 youth from across Australia and from New Zealand attended.

Nudist club gets heart-racing news By Boyd Robertson Emergency medical equipment donated by Tablelands Regional Council will get the blood pumping at a naturist club in Koah. The Barrier Reef Sun Club will be able to purchase an automated external defibrillator (AED) after successfully applying for a $1530 grant from council.

The not-for-profit club is putting up $500 for the total $2030 cost of the device, which automatically determines the patient’s heartbeat before delivering an electric charge to stabilize the organ’s rhythm. Most of the club’s 80 members are over 60 years old and the closest ambulance is up to 20 minutes away. The AED can be operated by someone with next to no training. The club will also pay

for the ongoing maintenance costs of the device. The club’s president told The Express the club was “pleased” to successfully obtain the grant, but declined to be named after previous contact with the media resulted in “puerile and titillating stories” that painted an inaccurate picture of the club. “The club’s just a place to provide a venue for naturists in the area to enjoy the lifestyle,” he said. “We could be a garden club or a bridge club – we

James Dickinson, Jacob Morris and Grace Joslin.

just happen to enjoy what we’re doing with no clothes on. There’s no sex or drugs but we do rock and roll.” The president said there were many unjustified public misconceptions surrounding the club. “We’ve been incorporated for 20 years and we’ve been on the Tableland for 15 years. I’d challenge anyone to provide evidence of misbehaviour linked to the name of the Barrier Reef Sun Club.”

DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Mareeba Heritage Centre

10th & 11th August, Kerribee Park Mareeba

Equestrian extravaganza comes to Mareeba for annual championships

HISTORY OF THE CARRIERS’ ARMS

Extract from: “The History of the Carriers’ Arms Hotel in Mareeba – The Resurrection of the Carriers’ Arms” by Mary Thompson (Heritage Museum Volunteer). “The Mareeba Museum volunteers conceived the idea of recreating part of the Carrier’s Arms building as one of their displays. We think poor old Mick Carroll (original proprietor) is now scratching his head, wondering if he has a hangover, because he can’t remember ever having a tree growing up through the roof behind the bar!

Horses and riders from as far afield as Bowen, Townsville and Cooktown will join local horses and riders for the 2013 ATDDEA Dressage Championship over the weekend of August 10 and 11, at Kerribee Park, Mareeba.

Mareeba based Atherton Tablelands and District Dressage and Equestrian Association are once again able to host this ** major dressage event thanks to major sponsor Mitavite and other local major sponsors Bendigo Bank and KikFM/4AM as well as a host of other valued local sponsors. The event is a qualifying event for State Squad selection as well as the State Dressage Championships held in Caboolture in October and attracts riders from all over north Queensland. As an Olympic discipline, dressage is run by Equestrian Australia; ATDDEA is an EA affiliated club and top level qualified EA judges will coming from SE Queensland and the Tablelands. The competitions at different levels will run over the 2 days, including international level FEI and freestyle (dressage to music) competitions,

The walls were now up and heaven help us, the roof was still to come. The ‘Fabulous Farmer’ was very agile on the roof and ‘Specks’ was a close second. Of course ‘Blind Builder’ had to be up there too, so he could instruct and direct operations.

which highlight the amazing movement and ability of the horses. ATDDEA was started in 2006 to provide official EA events, smaller competitions and access to EA coaches for dressage riders on the Tablelands and has used the fantastic arenas and camping facilities at Kerribee Park since then. The annual championship is one of very few ** dressage competitions held in the far north and has become an important event in the EA calendar. ATDDEA would like to thank all of their sponsors for their tremendous ongoing support – the event would not take place without them. Spectators are welcome all weekend and drinks and snacks will be available to purchase on the days. The competition running from about 8.30am to about 3.00pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

Have a good look at how steep the apex is on that roof. Tell you what, many a time this ‘Scrawny Old Chook’ ran the other way because I couldn’t bear to look. In the end we did it and proud of our efforts – the blokes are walking 10ft tall and we came in under budget!” For a more detailed account see Mary Thompson’s book “The History of the Carriers’ Arms Hotel in Mareeba”, RRP: $5 per copy. Come along to the Mareeba Heritage Centre on Saturday, 17th August, 2013, 11.30am to 1.00pm and see for yourself at the Launch of the newly reconstructed ‘Carriers Arms Hotel’, Jacobsens Watchmakers Shop and the Gaol. From the businesses of yesteryear to the businesses of today, the Launch is followed by a Tag Along Tour to three very interesting businesses... look out for our ad in the August 14th Edition for further details!

The LAND Cane trucks will not be restricted

By Boyd Robertson

Tablelands Regional Council will not impose restrictions on the movement of heavy cane-hauling trucks through roads in Julatten and Mount Molloy after hearing presentations from a residents group and the manager of Mossman Mill. Both the Julatten and Molloy Residents and Ratepayers (JAMARR) and Mossman Mill man-

ager Haydn Slattery made presentations to council at the August 1 meeting regarding the hauling of cane to Mossman Mill from the Tableland by BDouble trucks down the Rex Range Road. The number of trucks using the road is set to increase next year after Tableland Canegrowers signed a supply deal with Mossman Mill owners Mackay Sugar in April. The deal will result in 40,000 heavy vehicle movements through Julatten and surrounding ar-

eas, which is permitted by council. JAMARR’s presentation, delivered by vice president Diana Abiad, warned of negative impacts of having high levels of heavy truck movements through the residential areas of Julatten, including safety, environmental and health risks. Mr Slattery’s presentation argued that the survival of Mossman Mill depended on the increased intake of cane from the Tablelands and that BDouble trucks had hauled cane through the area

Elders opens new Mareeba depot with fun-packed launch About 80 people flocked to Mareeba’s industrial estate on July 29 for the official opening of a new Elders depot. The “totally informal” night ran from 5pm until well after 11pm and included a barbeque, activities for the kids as well as speeches and raffles. The new depot will see Elders offer merchandise in Mareeba where previously customers would have to travel to the Tolga location. Originally Elders had planned to hold the opening in early July but a clash with the Mareeba Rodeo set the date back about four weeks. Elders merchandise manager for the Tableland

392 head passed through market Numbers tallied to around last week’s yarding with 392 head passing through the Mareeba market. A large line of some 240 Brahman Steers from the local Mt Molloy district were offered. They were +400 to 580 kg’s, 21/2 to 31/2 year old steers and sold to similar rates of previous weeks. Some of the lighter condition steers went to local Fatteners. There were only 21 cows in the yarding but fat score and

condition did not improve the price best making 89 to 90 cents down 4 to 5 cents. Some very mixed quality light condition Steers and Micky bull calves from the tablelands were presented. Total Yarding Averaged $410.00 for 93.3 c/kg, We certainly need some wide spread winter rain in the southern and central zone to correct this market.

Janelle Menniti said the expansion was driven by customer demand. “We were having a lot of our customers looking to be able to pick up what they needed closer to the farm,” she said. “Our feeling was that by only having merchandise in Tolga we weren’t best serving the needs of our clients.” Elders area manager Jaxon Morris said despite the challenges facing the agricultural and grazing industries, Elders had confidence in the sector on the Tableland. “What this move shows is that we are confident that the agricultural market on the Tableland has a strong future,” he said.

since the 1980s with no complaint from Transport and Main Roads. Tension mounted as JAMARR supporters walked out in anger, claiming Mr Slattery was “telling lies.” A report, compiled by council infrastructure manager Trevor Adil and presented to council later in the meeting, pointed out the risks of withdrawing consent for the trucks to pass through the area.

Staying put: The Tableland Cup will remain in Mareeba for the next 12 months as the ‘Gators fought off a determined Roosters outfit to win 44-22 at Davies Park on Saturday night. Left, Ricky Shave crosses for the second of his four tries in the Mareeba Reserve’s 110-0 demolition of Atherton in the curtain raiser.

Improved Roosters make ‘Gators work for Cup win By Ryan Groube the Mareeba Gladiators have retained the Tableland Cup and moved a step closer to securing a finals berth with a 42-22 win over arch rivals the Atherton Roosters at Davies Park on Saturday night. The score, although the same as when the teams met back in round nine, was not indicative of the contest. Both sides were undermanned and had to rely on players from lower grades to field a side. As a result, the quality of the football was lacking but the war of attrition between the sides made for a worthy chapter in the history of the local derby. Roosters rising star, 17-year-old Titus Pokoraija backed up for three successive games. The young front rower played 70 minutes in the Under 18s clash, 70 minutes in the Reserves, before coming off the bench in A Grade. The Roosters also had Michael Woodleigh and Glen Hussey take the paddock again after playing in Reserve grade. For the ‘Gators, Reserve grade captain David Grainer and bullocking outside back Rick Shave played back to back games. Prior to kick-off, a minutes silence was held for Lance Gane, a former Mareeba Gladiators president, who passed away earlier in the week aged 63.

From his couch in the clouds, Gane would have been delighted with the start for the ‘Gators. In the opening set, the Roosters failed to diffuse a spiralling bomb with opportunistic winger Azza Gutchen seizing on the loose ball to score within the first minute. The Roosters hit back straight away with second rower Colt Tairua barging his way over the line from close range. Victor Akiba added the extras for a 6-4 lead to the Roosters. ‘Gators captain Rod Jensen did his best to lift his team with a beautiful show and go seeing him break the line before showing a clean pair of heels to outpace the Roosters backs and score. In a rare off night, Jason Lea missed his second conversion in succession for the ‘Gators to lead 8-6. In a see-sawing match, the Roosters appeared to have again hit back with their winger crossing in the corner only for the referee to disallow the try ruling the corner post had been taken out prior to the ball being grounded. The ‘Gators made the most of the reprieve with tries to Grainer and Jack Pedersen extending the home sides advantage to 20-12. Roosters centre Waylon Joseph helped narrow the lead to 20-12 after pouncing on a loose ball in the ‘Gators in goal. As the half time hooter sounded, Mareeba half Jackson Peters orchestrated a clever short side

play that saw interchange forward Charles Rose cross in the corner. The second half began in the same way as the first with the Roosters spilling a towering bomb and Rick Shave pouncing on the scraps to score. Another piece of magic from skipper Jensen saw him cross as the ‘Gators skipped out to a 3612 lead. The Roosters refused to go away and hit back with successive tries to Hurley and Bert Whap to reduce the margin to 36-22 with about 15 minutes remaining. It was as close as Atherton would get with ‘Gators hooker Neals Biehler sealing the win with a clever dart close to the line. Jason Lea nailed the conversion for the 42-22 win. Stand in Roosters captain Mike Hauraki said he was proud of the way his side stuck at it. “It was a good effort from the boys. They had a real shot tonight,” he said. Rod Jensen paid tribute to Atherton. “You have to take your hat off to Atherton for coming out and playing as spirited as they did,” he said. Jensen said he was happy with the two points and that one win from the ‘Gators final two games should be enough to secure a spot in the Cairns and District Rugby League finals series. The ‘Gators Reserves will be playing finals football after putting the Roosters Reserves to the

sword 110-0 in the curtain raiser. Dryston Hayes was in irresistible form for the home side scoring a hat trick of tries and finding huge gaps through the middle of the ruck. His tally would have been five if it wasn’t for some selfless play toward the end of the game. In the final 10 minutes, Hayes sacrificed two certain tries by off loading first to Luke West and then to Tom Turia. Reserves captain David Grainer said the side was sitting on the top of the table because the success of the team was more important than that of the individual. “We are all playing for each other. That is why we are sitting on top of the table,” he said. Grainer scored a hat trick of tries himself while Rick Shave crossed for four. Gordon Hunter landed 12 goals. In the Under 18s, the Roosters were too strong from the ‘Gators running out 40-8 winners. This weekend the ‘Gators travel to Tully for a danger game against the Tigers while the Roosters will play their last home game for the season against Ivanhoes. The following weekend is the final round of the competition. The ‘Gators host the Sharks while the Roosters play away to Brothers Innisfail. The ‘Gators retained the Tableland Cup by two wins to nil with a combined aggregate score of 84 points to 44.

Nationals beckon for Futsal team By Boyd Robertson

A team of young Mareeba futsal players has earned themselves a shot at the national championships after winning the regional finals in Townsville in late July. The Under 14s Mareeba Futsal team, pictured left, consisting of Mareeba State High School students James Elms, Liam Leporati, Ben Dickenson, Isaiah Goncalves, Steve Martens, Matthew Trotter and Zane Singleton, won the Northern Queensland Champion of Champions competition in Townsville on July 22. The team beat three other sides, drew once and lost once, but finished the competition by winning the grand final 5-1 against the Cairns side despite being down a player.

PAGE 22 The Express, Wednesday, August 7, 2013

They will now head to the Australian Champion of Champions competition on the Gold Coast in November, with a chance of being crowned the best Under 14s Futsal team in the country. Coach Ron Leporati said the players were very excited to make it to the finals. “The boys are just rapt,” he said. “They’re excited and they’ve been on a high since we made it to the finals.” The team members are also keen outdoor soccer players, using their expertise in each game to complement their play style in the other. Leporati said the team’s strength came from their cohesion. “This team play soccer together, they all know each other outside and they all go to school together,” he said.

“They know each other’s moves and they know each other’s game very well so that helps them play futsal.” Key player Elms, who has recently returned from a futsal tour of the United Kingdom, said he was “speechless” when the team made the finals. “It’s pretty cool,” he said. “We work as a team and we communicate well.” Elms, 13, said he wasn’t worried about potentially facing off against older players in the national finals, and said the team’s strategy would be simply to “win.” The team is looking for sponsorship to help with the costs of travel and accommodation in order to be able to compete at the national championships.

Horses and Hens combine

In brief: Bull rush

By Ryan Groube

The Mareeba Bulls smashed Innisfail United 6-0 at Borzi Park on Sunday to keep their noses in front of Marlin Coast in the race for the premiership. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj said: “We probably could have scored 15 today but the result was the most important thing.” The Bulls travel to Douglas on Friday.

All Stars pipped

The Mareeba Allstars indigenous youth rugby team have narrowly missed out on a win in a friendly against Ravenshoe State School at Davies Park on August 1, losing 34-30. Despite being ahead halfway through the 50-minute game, the Allstars lost the lead midway through the second half and failed to regain it by close of play. Established in April in a bid to curb truancy in Mareeba schools, the Allstars project has expanded to a wider-ranging social program including meetings at the Pulse Café in the Mareeba PCYC centre. Using football as a reward and teambuilding exercise, the program aims to steer at-risk youth in Mareeba away from crime and substance abuse.

Rollers ready

Tableland Roller Derby will head to Townsville this weekend for a brutal bout against Roll Asylum. The double-header bout, called ‘Sk8way to Hell’ by the Towns Villians club, will be held at Sk8way Townsville on Saturday night and also pits Townsville teams Skull Ravnens and The Slaughterers against each other.

There were just as many hens as there were horses as the Mareeba Turf Club hosted its August race meeting on Saturday. Crowd numbers swelled well past 300 as three brides to be chose the races as the ideal venue to kick off their hens parties. Pam Cade left her party a little late. She will marry Adrian Dalip on Saturday. Marisa Dickenson will get hitched to Naithan Van Der Linde on August 24 and Mel Butler is set to marry Lee Liaver on October 19. Each of the hens sponsored a race and were also guest judges for the Fashions on the Field competition. Ms Dickenson said she couldn’t imagine anywhere better than the Mareeba races for the party. “It is always such a great family day. I have aunties and nieces and everyone here. It is great,” she said. On the track, the Byrnes Street Barber QTIS Maiden Handicap over 1010 metres was won by the Nicole Homann trained Erin, ridden by Shohei Kaya. Beadsworth and Wishful took out the minor placings. Sonja Wiseman rode the Trevor Rowe trained Alexander Parade to victory in the Pam and Adrian Class B Handicap over 1010 metres.

Fightback falls short By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Bowls Club is has been left smarting after losing the inaugural Mareeba / Marlin Coast Trophy in a closely-fought game over the weekend. The Marlin Coast club prevailed by 18 points after two days of play with a final score of 364-346. Mareeba began to gain momentum late on Sunday but failed to gain the lead. Mareeba club president Graeme Drabsch said the event was a “great social two days” and hoped to see the competition repeated next year. “I think everyone had a great time,” he said. “They were ahead by the end of Saturday, we started to claw it back a bit on the second day but it just wasn’t enough.” “Hopefully we can turn it into something that runs for the next 15 or 20 years.” Marlin Coast club Men’s president Stephen Lockey said the game was good

for building relationships between clubs. “It’s going to be an annual event and it’s very good for inter-club relations,” he said. “We’re very pleased to get the inaugural shield but we’re very happy just to have the friendly competition between the two clubs.” Drabsch said the Mareeba Club had about 120 members and that bowling was beneficial for both health and social interaction. “Playing bowls gives you skill, fitness, mental toughness and discipline,” he said. “If you think about it, in a game of pairs, you’ll walk roughly two kilometres and pick up seven kilograms of bowls 63 times, so it’s essentially an aerobic workout as well as a game. “That’s really why there’s so many old people that play bowls, that and the social benefits of seeing every for the day as well.”

The minor placings were filled by Cyclone Larry and Fascia. “I have run about 100 second placings here and never won a race. This is my Mareeba maiden,” he said. Technocracy, ridden by Wanderson D’Avila, held off a late surge from Special Credit to take out the Mel and Lee Class 3 Handicap over 1210 metres. Race 5, the Marisa and Nathan Class 6 plate was taken out by the Ralph Baker trained Lyndi’s Gift ridden by Sonja Wiseman. The ever popular Fashions on the Field was held at about 2.45pm, just after the completion of the feature race. Cheyenne and Indiana Piggott took out the “littlies” category. Jake Redman was named best dressed “stallion”. The 12-17 years category was won by Jessica Leonard in a dress from Mareeba fashion house Who’s That Girl. Kylie Campman was the best dressed lady while Linda Lea took out the best dressed over 40 division. Gracyn Marsterson was deemed to have the best headware. The next race meet in Mareeba will be held on September 14. More photos from the event will be uploaded to The Express’ Facebook page.
