Katter set to retain seat By Ryan Groube
Bob Katter is poised to extend his stranglehold over the seat of Kennedy deep into a second decade as voters head to the polls on Saturday. ABC election analyst Antony Green told The Express that he “can’t imagine any other outcome” then the Katter’s Australian Party leader retaining Kennedy. Bookies have installed Mr Katter as an unbackable favourite with Way2bet.com.au declaring: “This vast northern outback seat is the Katter’s Australian Party’s to keep, and he’ll [Mr Katter] romp in again!” Despite holding the seat by 18 per cent, Mr Katter said it would be arrogant to think he was a shoe-in and that any election reflected the will of the people. “I have never felt confident ever in any election I have con-

tested,” he said. The most likely challenger to Mr Katter on the eight-person ballot is the Liberal National Party’s candidate Noeline Ikin. Ms Ikin has been campaigning since April, having circumnavigated the electorate three times, and with a national swing to the LNP is confident of “taking some skin” off Katter. The LNP’s state director Brad Henderson was bullish about Ms Ikin’s chances although he did concede unseating Katter was the ultimate challenge. “Noeline understands the challenge she faces in winning the seat and has worked extremely hard to carry her message around the electorate with every available resource of the LNP being made available to her,” Mr Henderson said. “The LNP will continue to provide whatever support is needed to Noeline to help her become the member for Kennedy right up until polling booths close on September 7.”

The Labor Party has gone back to the future with their candidate Andrew Turnour who contested the seat at the 2010 Federal Election – attracting 20 per cent of the vote. Mr Turnour was drafted in as candidate late in the campaign after the ALP’s first choice, Ken Robertson, was stood down for calling opposition leader Tony Abbott a racist. The remaining candidates are: Jenny Stirling, a social worker from Townsville, running for the Greens, Mareeba’s Dan Vogler for Family First, Mt Garnet pensioner Gordon Tuxford who is standing as an independent, George Brazier for Palmer United Party and Pamela Hecht a candidate for the fledgling Rise Up Australia Party. The Express’ Ryan Groube conducted interviews with the candidates as part of a three-page election guide for the seat of Kennedy which can be found on pages six to eight. Mr Brazier was the only candidate who couldn’t be reached by deadline.

Community comes together By Ryan Groube MOMENTS after having a park named after him, Col Colman’s reaction typified how the Chillagoe community were able to transform a barren reserve into a topnotch sport and recreation precinct. “I appreciate it but [rather than talk about myself] I’d rather just cook the sausages,” Mr Colman said. On August 30, about 80 people attended the official opening of Colman Park located at the intersection of Frew Street and the Burke Development Road. The opening fulfilled the vision of Mr Colman and former Chillagoe senior constable Chad Prien to provide a dedicated recreation and sporting area for locals. A combination of volunteer work, thrifty bargain hunting and salvaging, donations from the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) and the private sector has transformed the park over a period of five years. Today, the park has two netted cricket pitches, a bmx track, four light towers to allow night football, a new barbecue, similar to the ones found at the Cairns Esplanade, as well as a $60,000 toilet block. Former TRC Mayor Tom Gilmore officially opened the park having been in the Mayor’s chair when council allocated the money for the toilet block. Mr Gilmore urged those in attendance to ensure they never took the park for granted. “Just for a moment I would like you all

to look through new eyes at this facility which has been built, for the most part, by volunteers,” he said. “Today isn’t just the opening of a park or a toilet block. It’s the opening of something that is the heart and soul of this community. This is a place for kids,
it is a place for all people in this marvellous little community and I would hope that you will continue to look at this park through fresh eyes and cherish it.” Chillagoe mother of two, Catherine Cockburn has her young ones play in the touch football game on Wednesday
and said the facility was a great asset to the community. Major contributors to the park include; the TRC, Kagara Social Club, Mareeba and Dimbulah Bendigo Community Bank branches, Little Brothers, Peter McCubben and Mirriwinni Lime.

By Boyd Robertson A combination of green thumbs and elbow grease has netted Ray and Alice Titmarsh of Tolga the Garden of the Year and an induction into the Hall of Fame at the annual Tablelands Regional Council Garden Awards on August 27. Adile Shyqyr and Selfie Xhafer, who placed first and second, respectively, for the Home Garden category in the Northern Region, were also inducted to the Hall of Fame. Other winners include Biboohra State School and Ravenshoe Garden Club for the Waterwise category in addition to Carmello Leonforte and Steve and Marijke Hancock in the Sustainable Category. The awards were presented at Tinaroo Lakes Resort by TRC councillor Shaaron Linwood and Mayor Rosa Lee Long. Judge Len Curtis, a former TRC councillor, said he was delighted to see many firsttime competitors this year. “There’s new gardeners that have never
entered before and that’s very encouraging – my major concern is that young people don’t garden but it’s obvious that people are still taking it up and getting involved. “When I judge a garden I look at several criteria including colour, health and variety – but there is also a subjective element and I admit that I am very partial to winter flowers,” he said. “The Titmarshes have lovely flowers, as well as a beautiful range of orchids, veggies and fruit trees – they really have the whole package.” Alice Titmarsh, 91, said she and her husband were grateful to accept the award and that their garden took a lot of work. “We maintain the garden all by hand,” she said. “Previously we had a soaking hose but water restrictions have become an issue so we hand-water the whole thing now. “We’ve been here for seven years and we’ve built the whole garden from scratch.” Ray Titmarsh, 86, said he and his wife had battled health problems while building the garden, but maintaining it was good for keeping them active.

QR land now up for sale By Ryan Groube A large corridor of unused Queensland Rail (QR) land in the heart of Mareeba has been put up for sale by the State Government, with proceeds to go towards the Mareeba Airport upgrade. The Express exclusively broke the story about the possible sale of the unused railway corridor, which runs from parallel to Byrnes Street, in January. Since then, Member for Cook David Kempton has spent months in negotiations to put policy in place to allow the sale to go ahead. “Any policy blocks we had to do this have now shifted and QR policy now lines up with the State Governments intention to dispose of this excess land,” he said. Mr Kempton has a map of the available land at his electorate office at the Post Office Centre and has called for businesses, private buyers and community groups to lodge expressions of interest with his office. Once an expression of interest is lodged, the land will be valued by the State which Mr Kempton said given
its current state: “Wouldn’t be much at the moment”. Already, five bids to purchase parcels of the corridor are pending but cannot be discussed due to commercial-in-confidence. Mr Kempton said while there will be some operational line remaining, to service two train movements each week, Mr Kempton said selling surrounding land would be a boost to Mareeba. “At the moment this land is an eyesore that is difficult to manage and has left a big hole in the middle of the town that in my view is long overdue to be filled,” he said. “All the excess land along this corridor is up for grabs and it is substantial. Selling this land has the potential to lead the economic rebirth of the Mareeba township.” Premier Campbell Newman has given Mr Kempton an undertaking that all or part of the proceeds from the sale of the land will go toward funding the controversial Mareeba Airport upgrade. In July 2012, the LNP withdrew $12 million in funding for the upgrade which had been promised by the former Labor government.
Member for Cook David Kempton has announced the State Government will sell off unused portions of a railway corridor in the middle of Mareeba.
Students cram for QCS test By Boyd Robertson Tableland Year 12 students are cramming their brains ahead of the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test over September 3-4. The test, which is used in combination with the results of a student’s regular assessments to calculate their Overall Position (OP), is vital to gaining entry into high-demand university courses. Instead of testing information specific to their subjects, the QCS examines student ability in the Common Curriculum Elements (CCEs), such as spelling, punctuation, grammar, basic mathematics, extrapolation and analysis. Students are sorted into cohorts for the test, the group results of which are used to scale the school’s academic results so the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) can fairly calculate OPs across the whole state. Extensive training programs have been run Mareeba State High School (MSHS) and Atherton State High
Mareeba State High School Year 12 students Curtis Midgley and Julian Kath at a QCS practice session. School (ASHS) over the the last year, with MSHS’s QCS tutorials beginning nearly a full 12 months ago. Preparations included background information, dry runs and studying past tests. MSHS has also retained the services of Matt Rigby, a linguistics expert and QCS marker, to help tutor students. Additionally, both schools have support programs in place to help
students deal with the mounting pressure to perform well on the test. MSHS has a cohort of about 50 students taking the QCS test this year, while ASHS has about 100. St Stephen’s Catholic College in Mareeba has 18 students taking the test. MSHS students Anisah Ali-Allen and Kirsten Falvo, both 17, said they were feeling the pressure but were confident in their preparation.

EXPRESSyourself LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Katter responds to preference claims In answer to continuous claims made by the LNP in the local press that a vote for KAP is a vote for Labor, I want to set the record straight. After the last Federal Election, I informed the LNP that they would have my backing in forming Government. My 20 points, that I felt were necessary to save Australia, led me to make this decision. In the State election, most people got letters that said a vote for KAP was a vote for Labor. A vote for KAP is a vote for KAP. To pretend it’s something different is ridiculous. Now, the lies are again coming thick and fast. The LNP/ALP corporation both hold some sort of world record for making clear cut promises prior to elections and once elected, doing totally the opposite. Under KAP, Government cars will be Australian made. Government construction will be Australian steel. The dollar will be forced down, doubling the income for our farmers and manufacturers. Ethanol (and the dams to produce it) will deliver prosperity to regional Australia. Sugar, cattle and grains will thrive. Our retirees will receive 5 per cent

government secured bonds, and there will be a 10 per cent charge on all imports. This will deliver $20,000 to every family with young kids and an extra $3,000 to our struggling retirees each year. None of these things are radical; they are exactly what are being done in other countries. You can have all of this; all you have to do is give us your vote. Bob Katter Federal Member for Kennedy Ikin’s insurance plan The burden of ever-increasing insurance costs must be reduced. If elected on September 7, I will work in the Abbott Government to develop more detailed mapping of flood prone regions across North Queensland. This plan could reduce property insurance fees by more than two thirds. In my previous role as CEO of the Northern Gulf Resource Management Group, I spearheaded a new approach to mapping across leading cattle stations in North West Queensland. We repeatedly found there were properties which, whilst located in flood prone areas, actually very rarely flooded. Despite this, landholders were still paying a premium for their insurance. By providing more detailed mapping and historical analysis to the insurance companies, we were able to successfully reduce the insurance costs for some properties but more than 65 per cent. The same cost savings should and must be available for properties closer to the coast. My plan already is gaining attention among the senior Coalition ministers I have brought to Kennedy. I am born and bred in Mareeba and know rising costs are jeopardising employment and business confidence. We can bring real change. However, the Kennedy electorate must have a seat at government to bring change. And I will be proud to fight for you in Canberra. Noeline Ikin LNP Candidate for Kennedy
A grave disgrace For many years I have maintained the grave of prospecting explorer James Venture Mulligan, each year making the trip to the Mt Molloy cemetery to carry out cleaning, painting, laying new sand around the enclosure and replacing the red roses. The grave is photographed every year in its pristine condition. I was angered when making my vigil this year to find that one of my vases which holds the red roses had disappeared. An attempt had also been made to remove the second vase near the headstone. I located the missing vase nearby on another grave. The old Mareeba Shire Council erected an “historic site” sign outside the cemetery fence line a considerable number of years ago. Visitors and tourists who pay homage to James Venture Mulligan leave in the knowledge that he is remembered and that his grave is always presentable. I would implore that those who chose to visit them cemetery may in the future desist from robbing the dead. Elwyn Troughton Mareeba Preferences clear as mud Like many people I have been confused about all the mudslinging over Senate preferences this election, in our newspapers and on our roadsides. So I took the LNP Senator’s advice and checked for myself on the AEC website – and came away even more confused. I found that in Queensland, the LNP has favoured a ‘legalise marijuana’ party ahead of the Greens, but put the Greens ahead of One Nation Mr Katter, meanwhile, has put the Greens at dead last – and also managed to convince Labor to give its votes to the Katter party before the Greens in Queensland. But the Queensland, LNP has given its Senate preferences to an independent, who also so happens to be Kevin Rudd’s brother, ahead of the Katter party. Clear? KENNEDY decides Dan Vogler:
Andrew Turnour: Australian Labour Party
Family First
A
wide ranging review and audit of the insurance industry to combat soaring premiums is the key election platform of ALP candidate for Kennedy Andrew Turnour. Mr Turnour, who contested the seat of Kennedy at the 2010 Federal Election, was drafted in by the party after original candidate, Ken Robertson, was stood down in August after accusing opposition leader Tony Abbott of being a racist who wanted to reintroduce the White Australia Policy. Despite conceding he was running a “catch-up” campaign, Mr Turnour – who made a brief pit stop in Mareeba on August 23 – said his past experience as a candidate and his active role on the ALP branch at Ingham meant he was “well across the issues” of the electorate. “The horrifying cost of insurance is one of those hidden cost pressures that no one is really talking about and one that needs to be tackled,” he said. “The whole industry is in need of a refit. These huge increases are affecting at least 25,000 voters in this electorate. “We need to revisit government insurance, we need to look at competition, we need to look at selfinsurance and this has all become necessary because I believe the cur-
Breaking the rent cycle is the key election issue for Family First candidate for Kennedy Dan Vogler. Mr Vogler said it had become increasingly difficult for young families to fulfil one of the most fundamental elements of being an Australian, owning a house. “Home ownership makes the family dynamic much, much more stable,” he said. “At the moment we have a generation of young adults who are stuck in the rent cycle and who are unable to even consider raising enough money to put a deposit on their own home. “We live in this amazing and free country yet for many, if not most, the dream of owning their own home has become something that is near impossible to achieve.” Mr Vogler said the “housing affordability crisis” could be broken by; making more land available, investing in cheap housing “that may not necessarily be a dream house but would be a start” as well as implementing policies that drive down the cost of building. He also said that having to pay to be connected to council services up front was a hindrance to many potential home owners. Mr Vogler conceded that many of the issues of housing affordability rested with State governments and local councils but that the Federal Government needed to bring more pressure to bear to enact change. Inspired to run by the growing inequity between the “haves and the have nots”, Mr Vogler said the 2013 Federal Election was a vital one for the people of Kennedy. “There seems to be an ever increasing gap between the few that do have and the many that don’t have,” he said. “I think it is those people who most want to see their point made, and more importantly answered, in Canberra.” Mr Vogler said the benefit of voting for minor parties was that it was a vote for: “fresh faces, fresh ideas and fresh people with a balance and more in-depth understanding of what it is like to live as an everyday Australian.”
rent system is being abused.” Mr Turnour said for the people of Kennedy the 2013 election was all about jobs and job security. He said given the continued uncertainty in markets both locally and abroad, as well as the rising costs of living it was more important than ever that people felt secure in the jobs that they have or are able to find work. “Labor has done a lot for this seat and we need to be very clear that if he [Opposition Leader Tony Abbott] is elected there will be cuts right across industry, education, welfare and other many other areas,” he said. “Under our NBN plan, people like myself (an engineer) will be able to work locally yet compete and communicate globally. That is the way we are going to grow rural areas like Kennedy.” Mr Turnour conceded it would be hard to trump Bob Katter but that Mr Katter’s representation had kept Kennedy “in stasis for more than a decade” and that voters “should make Kennedy an active seat again”. During the campaign the ALP has announced a strategy, Growing the North: A Plan for Northern Australia a “three-point strategy to develop and diversify the economy of northern Australia” including a 20 year growth plan for Cairns.

KENNEDY decides Refreshingly honest, Greens Candidate for Kennedy Jenny Stirling concedes her chances of being elected are “between Buckley’s and none”. Despite her frank admission, Ms Stirling said it was important the Greens were on the ticket to provide people with an alternative to the major parties. Ms Stirling said it was a constant source of frustration for her that people had bought into the idea that environmental policy could not be in the best interest of other industries. She also said that while some of the criticism that the Greens were made up of city people who don’t understand the bush was merited it certainly wasn’t accurate in her case. “I grew up in Innisfail and have lived in western coal mining areas so I understand the mining, farming and grazing industries,” she said. “In these industries the land and the environmental conditions govern their lives. They move with the rhythms of the seasons. “The challenges are real when it comes to climate change. We have seen it with the drought out west and the impacts of [Tropical Cyclone] Yasi on the coast. The drought is not something that we are going to be able to change so the business model that we have used in the past has to change and both major parties have failed to do that.” Ms Stirling said she opposed the introduction of coal seam gas mining because it would undermine the agricultural industry as well as the introduction of uranium mining. She said she was supportive of the development of a renewable energy corridor (the CopperString project) linking Mount Isa and Townsville. “We have these massive properties that would be ideal for solar farms,” she said. Ms Stirling said with both major parties outlining major policy initiatives for developing northern Australia that environmental concerns weren’tP exI G A Q L 7 5 1 1 _ 0 2 0 9 1 3 ME r . p d f a ge cluded from those plans.

ncumbent Member for Kennedy Bob Katter believes he has done enough to be re-elected to the seat he has held since 1993 but said Saturday’s Federal Election is about the future, not the past. The leader of Katter’s Australian Party said the election of country and western singer James Blundell to the Senate would give his fledgling political party “balance of power numbers”. Should Mr Blundell be elected, the Coalition would have 36 senators as well as three cross-benchers for an absolute majority of 39 votes out of a possible 76. Mr Katter said that should his party get the balance of power numbers it would coincide with a period of “prosperity and go-forward” for the people of Kennedy. His major election platform remains the need to mandate ethanol as a fuel additive with a “national ethanol volume percentage” of five per cent by 2017 and 10 per cent by 2010. KAP would give mills $200 million over seven years to make the infrastructure changes necessary to produce ethanol. Mr Katter said the production of ethanol would reinvigorate the sugar industry, drive down petrol costs as well as help enable farming on the River. A E SMitchell T
“The development of our ethanol production is a tangible item that we are promoting that will allow our region to grow,” he said. “This cannot happen unless our mills switch to ethanol production.” During his time as a member of the 43rd Federal Parliament, Mr Katter said more than $1.1 billion had been spent on road infrastructure in Kennedy, $350 million for an electricity transmission line, known as the CopperString project, from north west Queensland to Townsville and $950 million in assistance post Tropical Cyclone Yasi. Mr Katter said he still had the passion and the will to represent Kennedy and that in the event of not getting reelected he would not disappear from the public sphere. “To those people who are hoping I am going to vanish [I say to you], too bad, so sad,” he said. “I still have a burning fire inside of me. The LNP and to a lesser extent the ALP destroyed my homeland. “I don’t want to, and I refuse to, bequeath to my children a country with no opportunity.” Mr Katter said if policy trends continued as they had, Australia will become a net importer of food and would not be able to produce a kilogram of steel, a litre of oil or manufacture a tyre.

KENNEDY decides Noeline Ikin: Liberal National Party

f the candidates in Kennedy, the LNP’s Noeline Ikin has spent the most time travelling the electorate and said the biggest gripe people had with the Federal Government was how difficult it was to get even the most basic things done. Pre-selected in April, Ms Ikin has completed three round trips on the electorate, driving more than 50,000 kilometres, and is one of the few candidates to have met with the major lobby groups on the Tableland. “The people of Kennedy are sick and tired of the negativity and red tape that has made it so difficult for people to do just about anything,” she said. “I nominated as a candidate because I wanted the opportunity to move this electorate, my home, forward and I know that people here want
someone who will back them and help them move through the system.” Since April, Ms Ikin has attracted eight shadow ministers to the Tableland including shadow treasurer Joe Hockey as well as shadow ageing minister Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells and shadow small business minister Bruce Bilson. With every major poll pointing towards a Coalition victory, Ms Ikin said the 2013 Federal Election was all about ensuring that the people of Kennedy elected someone who not only could voice their concerns in parliament but was also in a position to enact change. “The system is all rusted up. There is no question about it. But there isn’t a silver bullet to fix it. There may be a couple of bronze bullets but the reality is the hundreds of little things that don’t need to be there are costing our farmers, graziers
Pam Hecht: Rise Up Australia Party Votes are less important to Rise Up Australia Party (RUAP) candidate for Kennedy Pamela Hecht than spreading awareness of the fledgling political party which is contesting the Federal Election for the first time. Launched in 2011, RUAP are contesting 77 House of Representatives seats as well as fielding 16 candidates for the Senate under the slogan “Keep Australia Australian”. RUAP is opposed to the spread of Islam and other foreign cultures within Australia and are also firmly against same-sex marriage. Ms Hecht said the party’s key election platform was based on differentiating between “multicultural and multi-ethnic”. “What that means is that we oppose people from other countries coming in [to Australia] and telling us what our laws should be,” she said. “Multi-ethnic means that we embrace the good things about their culture; the food, the music, the art, but not their law. Taking
the good parts and leaving out the bad.” Asked how she felt about the Mareeba community having a mosque and a large Muslim community Ms Hecht said RUAP wouldn’t persecute anyone so long as they abided by Australian law and not Sharia law – the moral and religious law of Islam. When pressed about whether the prevalence of Sharia law in Australia merited such action, Ms Hecht said: “Keep in mind that during the cold war, Russia infiltrated America with spies and you could not tell the difference between them and the average citizen”. “Generally Muslims don’t like extremism but Rise Up Australia wants to make sure that it never reaches the stage that it does.” Ms Hecht said she saw the 2013 Federal Election as a beginning and a way of introducing people to the party. She also said: “Rise Up Australia has a broad police base but the security of our country is our main priority.”
Biboohra set to dance the night away at fundraiser
and small businesses extra time and money,” she said. “If the LNP win, which I think they will, and I win, Kennedy would be in government for the first time in a very long time. I will be at the table where all the decisions are being made. “I will be right out in front to ensure that the decisions that are being made by government don’t cause us harm and that the government starts to understand a lot more about the issues of north Queensland and north-west Queensland.” Ms Ikin has floated the idea of a tax trade scheme that would allow graziers to sell tax losses to banks in a bid to reduce their debt without having to sell assets. The Coalition has also announced a white paper for the development of northern Australia as well as $100 million to improve mobile phone coverage in rural areas, including Kennedy.
– Gordon Tuxford: Independent – Disillusioned by the major parties, Mount Garnet pensioner Gordon Tuxford used some savings put aside for the renovation of his house to run as an independent candidate for Kennedy. Mr Tuxford said he had spoken to people, particularly younger voters, in the lead-up to the election who weren’t sure who to vote for because they thought that both parties were “a mob of dick heads”. The final straw for Mr Tuxford was when he saw former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie [the ALP’s candidate for Forde] in a television interview where he said he was going to keep politicians in Canberra honest.
“I was watching that interview and all I could think to myself was ‘Well, who is going to keep you honest?” Mr Tuxford said. “So I went out and I got my hundred signatures and here I am exercising my rights under the Westminster system.” Mr Tuxford said while he won’t win the election, if he did, his key platform would be electoral reform. He said he used to cherish that everyone in Australia had to exercise their civic duty by voting but he had since changed his position and was now an advocate of optional voting. “At the moment the people we elect
are more interested in holding on to power or kicking the other bloke out of power to actually do what they were elected to do in the first place,” he said. “If I was elected the first thing I would get rid of is preferences, the second thing that would go is I would give people the right to choose whether they vote or not. “People should be given the right to choose not to be a part of it [elections], particularity if they feel that none of the parties are going to be the representatives that they want.” Mr Tuxford said he would proud to stand up for the “little bloke” at the Federal Election.

All the fun of the festival A record crowd descended on Atherton’s Main Street on Friday night to watch Taleesha Fegatilli crowned Maize Festival Queen. Ms Fegatilli also took out the Ms Charity crown while St Joseph’s teacher Aleesha Exarhos was crowned Princess. The Atherton State High School band entertained a growing crowd prior to the street parade kicking off at 7.30pm. Wave after wave of colourful floats, intermingled with Queens’ floats, completed two
laps of Main Street much to the delight of the crowd. Event organiser Wendy Ganly said she was overwhelmed by how successful the 2013 event had been. “It was the best crowd I have ever seen at the Maize Festival,” she said. “A lot of people put their hearts into putting this on and it is great that the community support it and come out to have a good time.” Ms Ganly congratulated Ms Fegatilli and Ms Exarhos but said all the Queens entrants
had been “wonderful” and choosing the winners had been a “very hard choice”. Princess Exarhos said she had entered the competition to show her students the importance of being active in their community. Ms Fegatilli said after her coronation that she was: “in shock, so happy and very thrilled”. She said she wanted to thank the organisers for putting on such a wonderful event. The Maize Festival is an annual celebration of the region’s agricultural base.

Saving the iconic Swamp Orchid... You know, when we talk about rare, threatened and endangered plants, especially in this part of the world, we automatically think of rainforests. But our open eucalypt forests also have precious flora greatly in need of protection from extinction. The Swamp Orchid (Phaius tancarvilleae) is a ground orchid which grows in swamps, springs and soaks in eastern Australia. It has large strap-like leaves, and in August and September it produces very tall flower spikes (which can grow up to 2 metres high) with beautiful large purple and white flowers all the way up the stalks. It is a very beautiful plant. Unfortunately for this orchid, being so beautiful makes it very desirable for orchid collectors, and so its natural populations have been raided by collectors, almost to extinction. It is now classified as very rare indeed. One of the few remaining natural populations of this orchid is in the springs and swamps at Yuruga Nursery. When we bought the property in the late 1970’s there were only a handful of plants left. The populations had been decimated. While the main threat was from collectors who dug it up by the bag-full, the tiny stands were also under threat from fire, cattle and drainage. In those days it was the ‘done thing’ to burn the bushland every year, thus playing havoc with the orchid populations. Cattle also applied pressure through trampling and (possibly) eating it. And in those days wetlands were seen as wastelands that had to be drained and put to productive use, thus destroying the orchid’s habitat. So the poor orchid was under threat from every direction. No wonder it was rare. So, Yuruga became the custodians of a very rare plant, and we set about protecting it with a simple management plan. Firstly, we locked out the collectors. Then we kept out the yearly bushfires. Cattle were excluded. Our springs, soaks and swamps are valued and protected. And, being a nursery, we propagate the plant and make it available for people to buy. So there’s no need for anyone to steal it from the wild because they can easily buy it at a very affordable price. Almost immediately, the population of the orchid began expanding. And we now have here at Yuruga Nursery one of the largest populations in the world. It flowers every August-September like clockwork, and a plant in flower is a sight to behold. At Yuruga we are passionate about preserving our native flora and our natural environment. As the Swamp Orchid story shows, it can be done!
Happy gardening!

Deadly ticks on the rise By Ryan Groube Vets have recorded a spike in presentations of a deadly tick capable of killing its host in as little as three days. In July, Central Veterinary Surgery (CVS) had 28 parasitic tick cases, up seven on the previous month. Wallabies and bandicoots carry the tick which can be passed on to animals including dogs, cats, small horses and calves when they cross paths with the carriers. If an animal is affected, it will become lethargic, weak in the back legs and once the ticks poison begins to spread the animal will vomit and have difficulty breathing. CVS veterinary surgeon Doctor Madeleine Kelso said death by the toxin of a parasitic tick was a horrible way for an animal to die. Doctor Kelso said no tick prevention measure was 100 per cent effective and that the message to pet owners was
to check their animals for ticks once a day. “Animals that pick up these ticks are intensive care patients. It should never be a case of ‘I’ll put off bringing it in until tomorrow’. “The sooner we can begin treatment the more chance they have of surviving.” Fellow CVS veterinary surgeon Doctor Gretel Fowler said checking animals every day not only increased the chance of catching a tick early but could also significantly reduce the vet bill. If a parasitic tick is caught at a reasonably early stage the cost of treatment is between $250 and $500 and the animal has a survival rate of about 70 per cent. If the animal is bought in too late the cost of intensive care treatment could see the bill spike to about $1000 and the chances of the animal living decrease.

Improvements at cattle sale Mareeba Combined Agents penned a total of 491 at this week’s Prime and Store Cattle Sale. One local trade buyer put a very strong effort in to secure two very good pens of steers causing the rate to rise 9 c/kg above last week’s value. The same applied for the good trade heifers selling into the mid 120 c/kg range. Cows suitable for the wholesale trade improved for the best, mostly they
sold in the 85 c/kg-105 c/kg range, which was a great improvement. Bullocks to the Export Slaughter Market attached some competitive rates, overall 30 Ox were sold and values did improve. Cows to the Export Slaughter market were unchanged on last week. Heavy Bulls sold to a stronger demand. Light condition Cows and Bulls struggled to gain any real value.

Mackay Sugar’s Community Working Group (CWG) met at the Mt Molloy CWA Hall for more than two hours on August 26. The group consists of Julatten and Mt Molloy residents: Dennis Rose, Lorne Cubit, Juliet Skinner, Loretta Zammataro, Martina Leiter and Rupert Russell. Also on the CWG is Tablelands Regional Councillor Gaye Taylor, Member for Cook David Kempton and was attended by senior Mackay Sugar personnel. The meeting was used as an introduction, for housekeeping and to appoint a chair for the CWG. Queensland Corporate Communications Network (QCCN) Managing Director David Donohue was appointed chairperson in recognition of his extensive stakeholder relations experience and proven ability in chairing similar groups. Mr Donohue was Acting Chairperson for the inaugural CWG meeting, yet was absent during the Chairperson selection process. Mr Donohue said the group had yet to agree on the terms of reference and that
resolving specific issues “haven’t progressed very far at all”. He said the meeting had predominately been a chance to get an understanding of the issues and to appoint a chairperson. Mackay Sugar Communications Manager Lorelei van Dalen said she was encouraged by the constructive approach displayed by all CWG members at the meeting. “I’m hopeful that the CWG meetings will prove a valuable consultation process for members and Mackay Sugar. “Over the coming months, the CWG will investigate possible options that will contribute to the planning for the safe and efficient transportation of Tablelands cane to Mossman Mill in a manner that reduces impact on the Mt Molloy and Julatten communities,” Ms van Dalen said. Member for Cook David Kempton said: “there was a frank and robust discussion and I am really encouraged by the progress that was made”. The CWG will meet bi-monthly until August 2014, with outcomes of each meeting reported back to Mt Molloy and Julatten community members via group members and Mackay Sugar.
Policy welcomed by Growcom Peak horticulture body Growcom today welcomed the statements on agriculture policy released by both the Federal Government and Coalition in the lead-up to Saturday’s federal election. Chief Executive Officer Alex Livingstone said these announcements directly addressed key priorities identified by Growcom in creating the conditions for a competitive horticulture industry. “The Federal Minister for Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry, Joel Fitzgibbon, has announced a commitment to an enhanced Food and Grocery Code of Practice and a set of standardised contracts for produce supply that will capture retailers as well as wholesalers and will include an independent mediator to ensure fairness,” said Mr Livingstone. “This is an important step in increasing transparency in the food supply chain and giving producers confidence that they will secure a fair price for their products,” he said. “However, we hope Mr Fitzgibbon will widen his consultation on these matters to key representative bodies in
the horticulture industry which sit outside membership of the National Farmers’ Federation, including Growcom.” Mr Livingstone said that the Coalition’s announcement addressed the need for investment in information and research for the future by promising an increased contribution to agricultural RD&E programs. “Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food Security, John Cobb, has announced the Coalition’s welcome commitment to increase agricultural R&D expenditure by $100 million to address the decline in productivity growth,” said Mr Livingstone. “While this does not go far enough to restore the Australian Government’s contribution to agricultural RD&E programs to 5 per cent of industry gross value of production, it is a useful first step.” Mr Livingstone said these announcements followed the release of the Greens’ plan for the Australian food sector, Our Future Food, in July. “Many elements of the Greens’ plan align with the fruit and vegetable industry’s priorities.

Thank You THANK YOU!
It gives me great pleasure as chairman of the Mareeba Multicultural Festival committee to acknowledge the vast amount of co-operative and community support that has created by far the best festival in fifteen years of operation. I especially thank each and every one of our generous sponsors, The State Government (Multicultural Affairs), and the various ethnic groups, people who mounted cultural and food displays, performers and artists and of course the many thousands of the general public from throughout the Far North who contributed to our success. I also wish to pass on a special mention of appreciation for the personal support and committed effort of each and every one of my committed members. These include Tableland Regional Council, Fred, Frank, Milli, Sabrina, Fatima, Evan, Stacey, Des, Ram, Sushma, Julie, Uto, Jennefer and everyone else who assisted us in our endeavours. I trust that this has proved an excellent base from which we can look foward to a similarly successful festival in 2014. In appreciation, GIULIANO CORDENOS, Chairman, Mareeba Multicultural Festival Committee

‘Gators through to grand final By Ryan Groube The golden boot of Gordon Hunter has guided the Mareeba Gladiators Reserves into the CDRL grand final after a thrilling come from behind win against the Yarrabah Seahawks on Sunday. With scores locked at 38-38, the ‘Gators were awarded a penalty after a series of infringements by the Seahawks with about 10 seconds left. In blustery conditions, Hunter lined up from 30 metres out at a 45 degree angle and slotted the conversion to secure the 40-38 win.
The kick sparked wild celebrations from not only the players but a healthy spattering of ‘Gators supporters who had made the trip down the hill to Barlow Park for the major semi-final. After the win, ‘Gators coach David Grainer said he had no doubt Hunter was going to nail the penalty. “I knew he was going to get it. He has been kicking them from everywhere all year,” he said. Although Hunter was the hero, the ‘Gators would never have been in a position to win if it wasn’t for outstanding games from outside
No fairytale for U11s By Ryan Groube when Mareeba re-entered the Cairns and District Junior Rugby League competition at the beginning of the year the expectation was that they would struggle for the first couple of seasons. No one told the Under 11s. After finishing the regular season as minor premiers, the ‘Gators faced off in the grand final against the Edmonton Storm at Jones Park, Cairns on August 31. The result didn’t go their way but the youngsters proved to the rest of the competition that the Gladiators not only belonged but deserved to be respected as well. In the end, the final scoreline was Edmonton 40, ‘Gators nil but for
Mareeba’s Under 11s coach Les Strickland the result was inconsequential. “With this being our first year back in this competition I think the boys have done really well just to have been here today,” he said. “Edmonton were just a bit too good for us but there is always next year.” Strickland said the team had lost its most valuable player throughout the season, Grand Hagai, just before the grand final. Playmaker Stewart Stephens, captain and fullback Tresmin Banjo and prop forward Tyrone Strickland were the best for the ‘Gators. The man of the match award for the final was given to the Storm’s lightningquick fullback Tyreece Crathern who was the difference between the teams.

back Rick Shave and underrated lock forward Luke West. Throughout the 70 minutes, the ‘Gators played nowhere near their best and too often were guilty of dropping the ball or giving away penalties. Each time the ‘Gators surrendered possession, West was the man making the tackles that mattered. With a handful of minutes left in the first half, West had tackled himself to a standstill and half jogged, half staggered his way to the bench for a brief reprieve before fronting up again in the second half.
Shave terrorised not only the Seahawks backs but their forwards as well in a brilliant display. With about one minute left on the clock, Shave bundled his opposite winger into touch to set up what proved to be the decisive attacking raid. The ‘Gators enjoy the weekend off before the grand final which will be held at Barlow Park on September 15. The ‘Gators grand final opponents will be decided at the weekend with the Yarrabah Seahawks playing the Cairns Kangaroos for the remaining finals berth.
Tigers roar in Eacham By Ryan Groube The Ravenshoe Tigers rattled off 20 unanswered second half points to overturn a 14-4 halftime deficit against the Malanda Eels and claim the Eacham Junior Rugby League Under 16s premiership. The teams had met five times throughout the regular season for a return of two wins apiece and a draw. Malanda started the better and off the back of strong defence made the most of their attacking opportunities to jump out to a 12-4 lead. With about three minutes left in the first half, Malanda choose to take a shot at goal despite being in good attacking position. It would be the last points they would score as the Tigers lifted in the second half led by a superb performance by fearless prop Tom Squires who bent or broke the line with every carry. Tigers coach Kelvin Groves told The Express after
the match that he wasn’t surprised the Eels took the two points. “We have built our season on defence and all year teams have found it difficult to score against us so I wasn’t surprised,” he said. “I am really proud of the boys. I knew they had it in them.” In the Under 14s final, Atherton easily accounted for Herberton 42-14 with Brendan Pensini named man of the match. Atherton also took out the Under 12s final with a 26-6 win over Ravenshoe. Kobe Martin was adjudged man of the match. After the Under 16s final a series of major awards were handed out including: Club Championship - Atherton Rising star - Dylan Parise Michael Hayes Club Person of the Year - David Gampe Kev Bailey was awarded a life membership.

Bulls mixed bag Shooting The Mareeba Bulls Premier League side will have to qualify for the grand final the hard way after falling 2-1 to the Marlin Coast Rangers away from home on Saturday night. Against the recently crowned FNQ Football premiers, the undermanned Bulls - missing key midfielders Wayne Srhoj and Dennis Allen - battled manfully throughout the contest to fall just short. Coach Alex Srhoj said: “Proud of the boys, it was a pretty intense game both teams gave it everything they had and that is what finals football should be.” “We had our patches they had their patches and I think we showed we can hold our own and they showed how much they wanted to win”. Shroj’s comments couldn’t have been more contrasting to that of the Rangers outspoken mentor Paul Fitzgerald. Despite only winning by one goal, Fitzgerald, speaking to The Express Managing Editor Carl Portella after the game, said: “I thought we dominated it. It took us a while to get used to how physical you are but we tore you apart in the second half.” “We dominated possession, dominated territory, dominated the chances on goal and we deserved to win.” Srhoj, when told about Fitzgerald’s outburst said: “I think that is a load of crap to be honest.” The Bulls Premiers will be looking to set up a rematch with the Rangers in the grand final when they host Douglas United in an elimination semi final at Borzi Park on Saturday. Srhoj said it would be a big test for the team to respond but said “we head into every game with the belief that we can win.” There was better news for the Bulls Reserves who have secured direct passage through to the September 14 grand final after thumping Douglas United 5-1.

helps John defy the odds
By Boyd Robertson Age and disability are no barriers to being a crack shot, as Malanda resident John Baxter, pictured above, proves. Having recently celebrated his 75th birthday, Baxter is thought to be one of Australia’s oldest living paraplegics. He’s also a highly accomplished fullbore rifle shooter, having won competitions in Brisbane, Sydney, Bendigo and Belmont among others. Using a “highly individual” customised 6BR rifle assembled by Tableland gunsmith Phil Mastin, Baxter regularly bullseyes targets between 300 metres and one kilometre away in the F-Class Open category. Having previously been a member of the Cairns and Inland District Rifle Association, Baxter is now a member of the Mareeba Rifle Club. Now residing at the Ozcare Malanda home for the aged, Baxter’s competitive spirit is still burning brightly. “If you aren’t trying to come first, you might as well not turn up – in anything,” he said. Born on August 28, 1938, Baxter began standard shooting when he was “just a hairy-legged child.” An accident at work when he was 17 left him without the use of his legs, but didn’t dint his enthusiasm for shooting. Neither did strokes, nearly losing the use of his right arm and various other health problems. “Shooting’s my reason for living - if you took it away from me I would probably curl up and die,” he said. Baxter shoots now from the stable platform of his wheelchair. He has “absolutely no plans” to stop shooting anytime soon, and was to take part in an Atherton Rifle Club shoot over the weekend.

Bowled over By Ryan Groube
A modest grant has made all the difference in firmingup an unlikely partnership between Mareeba State High School and the Mareeba Memorial Bowls Club. For the past three years, MSHS seniors taking health and physical education have spent a term learning lawn bowls at the Mareeba Memorial Bowls Club. Previously, the club did not have enough bowls to go around and students had to share. A portion of a $5000 grant from the Community Gambling Benefit Fund has allowed the bowls club to purchase 10 sets of four bowls. Grade 11 student Casey Walmsley had reservations about learning lawn bowls but said since beginning the sport at the beginning of term three she had changed her view. In partnership with Tjana Furnari-Southam, the pair has catapulted to the top of the class who playoff in fixtures each week. “At first I thought it was going to be boring but it is actually really fun, I really like it – we all do,” she said. Walmsley conceded her first bowl “was horrible” but she had begun to “get the hang of it” after receiving some tips from club members. Chair of the Mareeba Memorial Bowls Club committee Peter Soda said there was a lot of talent among the students. “Their teachers run the class but we show them how to deliver the bowl and also teach them a bit about the etiquette of bowls,” he said. “There are some really natural bowlers among them and they improve a hell of a lot since they get here for the first time.” Mr Soda said the lack of bowls had become a real hindrance and that the club “had jumped at the opportunity to get some more”. Mr Soda said the bowls would be made available free of charge for people at their Barefoot Bowls events on the first Friday of each month. Barefoot Bowls cost $10.
