WITH 48,000 premature or sick babies born in Australia each year, the impact is significant and traumatic for many – therefore the help of communities is vital in supporting affected families. Doing their bit recently was Kane and Tonya Mitchell of Ma-
reeba whose 1-year old daughter Makinlee was born premature. Along with the support of family and friends together they took part in the annual ‘Walk for Prems’ event held in Cairns on October 27. The 2019 walk, now in its tenth year, saw droves of people
flock to the Cairns Esplanade in support of families with an aim to raise money and awareness for premature or sick babies. Tonya Mitchell raised more than $2,632 and was the fifth highest solo fundraiser in Australia. Mrs Mitchell’s team, team
Makinlee, named after her daughter, also raised $2782, a staggering difference to their initial goal of $400. Mrs Mitchell was extremely happy with the event and the money she raised and is looking forward to participating next year.
“The event was great,” she said. “It was so well organised and had a fantastic atmosphere. “I can’t wait to do it again next year.” Mrs Mitchell would also like to thank everyone who walked on the day or donated money to the cause.

ONE student will benefit from a scholarship program, which will supplement their study costs in their first year of their higher education. Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Branches Chairman Gilbert Teitzel said the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Branches Scholarship Program, which opens in December this year, was launched because the local bank believed local students deserved every opportunity to
achieve their dreams. “An investment in education yields great long-term dividends and by helping young people gain access to tertiary education, the returns to the student, their families and the local community are significant. “The Community Bank Branches Scholarship Program is a transformative undertaking that changes the lives of local students, strengthens communities for the long term and is a tangible example of the
good that banking with us can achieve. “Our young people are our future and we believe they deserve the best support possible to help forge their careers and achieve their dreams. Successful Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Scholarship applicants will initially receive funding for one year and depending on academic performance, the scholarship may be renewed to assist in the second year of their study.
Applications are invited from eligible students, starting their studies in 2020, from December 2, 2019. Applications close on January 28, 2020 and will be assessed in early February 2020. Last year, the Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Branches Scholarship supported local students Noah Goldsworthy and Daniel Strazzeri with their Paramedic and Law studies at JCU and QU. The Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank Scholar-
ship is part of the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Scholarship Program, which partners with Community Bank branches, Rural Bank and The University of Melbourne. The program has now supported over 800 students, with $8.1 million in funding since its inception in 2007. Community Hub officially begins LAST Thursday marked a monumental day for the town of Mareeba as it saw the official turning of the sod for the Cedric Davies Community Hub. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore, Minister for Government, Racing and Cultural Affairs Stirling Hinchcliffe and Member for Cook Cynthia Lui were in attendance, all three of whom spoke about the enormity of the project for the region. Cr Gilmore said the Cedric Davies Community Hub is something the community should be extremely excited about. “Every now and then, something will pop up that offers long-term potential for the growth and benefit of the community and this is one of them,” he said. “We’re starting with the bowls club and library and when completed this community facility will be one that grows on its own accord. “This multi-faceted gem is one that I’m confident the community will be proud of over the
next 20-30 years. “As a small rural council, we rely heavily on grants and subsidies to maintain and upgrade community facilities. “We are so indebted to the Queensland Government for the funding to make this all possible.” Minister Hinchcliffe echoed Cr Gilmore’s comments, noting that the benefits of the Community Hub would be felt well into the future. “When it is completed, this will be a state-of-the-art facility housing community and training activities and events, outreach community services, a new library and undercover lawn bowls,” Mr Hinchliffe said. “On top of that, the council estimates that 44 jobs will be created or supported by these works, which is a fantastic result for the local economy and for Mareeba families. “This is why the Queensland Government is proud to support this project through almost $1.1 million from the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Pro-

Elections in March. In making the announcement, Cr Toppin said she would
be honoured to be elected to lead the progressive shire, with a strong focus on sustainability, economic development and community wellbeing. “My vision is to sustain the incredible growth that our council and community have worked collaboratively to achieve in the shire in the past four years,” Cr Toppin said. “I will focus on providing the platform for our industries to thrive economically and, at the same time, work to ensure we maintain the social fabric of the shire so our families continue to prosper and enjoy the lifestyle that makes our region so great.” More specifically, Cr Toppin highlighted two key projects she will be looking to help deliver for the Mareeba Shire if elected in 2020. “There are a couple of concerns that I think every Councillor is aware of, one of which being access to affordable water for farmers which we will continue to lobby for,” she said. “The other issue is the Kuranda Range Road, as its current state acts as a deterrent for those families who commute up and down it every day. “In addition, improving the road offers the potential for a real transport corridor which will open up our export markets.” A daughter of migrant farmers, Cr Toppin was born and raised in Mareeba, and went on to forge a highly successful career in the education sector.
She has served as principal in permanent and acting positions at five Far North Queensland high schools including Mareeba (2003-2010) and Cairns State High (2011-2016), the latter where she demonstrated strong leadership to lead more than 200 staff and 1700 students. Cr Toppin won a seat on Council at the 2016 Queensland Local Government Elections. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my
“But more importantly, he’s been such an advocate for the Mareeba Shire over his many years in politics and his great leadership is something I will always personally remember.” Cr Toppin, a mother of one and grandmother to four, is well known for being a strong, motivational leader, with a track record of accountability, financial stability, team management and ethical decision making.
“By far one of the most important things I bring to Council, however, is my passion for this shire.” time on council and believe I have delivered this role with the utmost integrity that the position requires, with a focus on financial stability, facilitating growth and maintaining and improving the level of infrastructure that is needed to serve our community,” Cr Toppin said. “The mayoral position is another challenge, but one that I readily accept as it gives me an opportunity to give back to the community that has given me so much support.” Cr Toppin also extended her thanks to Mayor Tom Gilmore, an individual who provided her with a greater insight of what’s expected of a local politician. Tom has always had an eye to financial stability and balancing your budget and that’s right down my alley,” she said.
“My extensive career in education, leading institutions that play a vital role in our community, speaks volumes for the skills, abilities and dedication I bring to Mareeba Shire Council,” Cr Toppin said. “By far one of the most important things I bring to Council, however, is my passion for this shire.” Among her achievements in local government, Cr Toppin lists delivering a balanced 2018-19 budget with a rate rise of three per cent (including continuing to build reserves against possible disasters as well as future opportunities), as most satisfying, together with a continued focus on delivering safe, reliable and modern infrastructure, that meet the needs of the Mareeba Shire community.
Speech pathology books donated Speech Pathology Australia recently held their annual Book of the Year event with a judge from the event coming from a local Tableland business. The Book of the Year Awards selects children’s books that foster language and literacy development in young Australians and helps to promote the role that speech pathologists play in that development. Laura Nelson from Tablelands Speech Pathology believes that Speech Pathologists are in a “unique” position to help foster this growth. “Speech Pathologists understand the link between language, speech and reading,” Mrs Nel-
son said. “Learning to read and write is a crucial part of a child’s development and are also essential skills for adults. “Speech Pathology Australia conducts its Book of the Year Awards to identify the best children books available.” Mrs Nelson also donated three books under the indigenous children category to the Mareeba State School including the winner “Dreaming Soldiers” “I have a good relationship with Mareeba State School and I felt it would be the most sensible place to donate the books as they would be utilised there,” she said.

Cynthia Lui moves office to Cairns munity organisations want to meet with her in Cairns. “This move will ensure I can spend more time meeting with the people I represent,” she said. “I firmly believe that the new office location will give all constituents better access to my office, so I can continue to deliver for all the communities throughout my electorate.” “Since elected, I have worked hard to advocate for the needs of Mareeba and give the local community a strong voice in Parliament. I am proud of all of my key achievements in the
Mareeba Shire.” “I will continue to work collaboratively with the Mareeba community by holding regular mobile offices and meeting days to deliver an effective and efficient service to the community. “I will continue to fight hard for Mareeba and the Cook electorate.” The office move has resulted in a cost in excess of $70,000 to ratepayers with many questioning whether this was money well spent.
Crime Stoppers comes to town
THE newly formed Far Northern Volunteer Area Committee (VAC) of Crime Stoppers Queensland was formed recently and will officially launch next Wednesday. The new committee was implemented after senior police officers approached Crime stoppers in the region to address the declining rate of volunteers. The purpose of the new committee is to promote Crime Stoppers throughout the Tablelands, Gulf and Peninsula areas as well as Indigenous Cape communities. Far Northern VAC Chairperson Mladen Bosnic (pictured) said Crime Stoppers will pro-
vide the region with a vital service that hasn’t been seen in this part of Queensland before. “Crime Stoppers offers community members a platform where they can report crime anonymously without the fear of discovery and potential retribution,” he said. “Crime Stoppers is crucial in providing for safer communities so it’s fantastic to see this service operational in the region.” A launch date to commemorate the new committee has been set for 10-11 am on Wednesday 13 of November at Anzac Park in Mareeba. Dairy industry Code of Conduct on its way Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said the Australian dairy industry will have a mandatory code of conduct by the start of next year. Mr Entsch said the mandatory code would improve the contractual arrangements between dairy farmers and dairy processors. Mr Entsch said this was the outcome dairy farmers on the Tablelands had been crying out for. “I understand the need for clear safeguards outlining how farmers are treated as members of the supply chain and therefore the need for the code to be in place as soon as possible,” Mr
Dairy industry mandatory Code of Conduct is set to be implemented early next year.
Entsch said. “I have been pushing for the process to speed up and am pleased to see that advocacy has paid off. “It is not the silver bullet but it is a massive step in the right direction. “Ahead of the code’s formal introduction the dairy industry is on notice to make sure that the contracts offered to farmers are appropriate and fair.” Mr Entsch said the mandatory code is an election promise and is an outcome of the April 2018 Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s report into the dairy sector. “The dairy industry has had a
huge role in developing the code and I look forward to the release of the exposure code later this week,” he said. “Consultation on the exposure code will be open for four weeks and, from January 2020, the industry will be bound by the new code. “Stakeholder consultation is an essential component in the development of this mandatory code so I encourage all those in the dairy industry to review it and have a say.” For further information and to have your say visit www. haveyoursay.agriculture.gov.au

“I took this at the Cairns Botanical Gardens, I love watching ants they are so industrious and I was determined to get a good photo as I so often failed at achieving this, so I sat on the ground, took my time and was rewarded with this time for the effort. I took this one on my Nikon D7500, at f/11; 1/60 secs; ISO 320 on a Tamron Marco 90mm lens with flash.

The Mareeba Hospital is now home to a new endoscopy service thanks to funding courtesy of the State Government.
ENDOSCOPY services will now be available at the Mareeba Hospital thanks to a $1 million upgrade courtesy of the Queensland Government. Health Minister Steven Miles and Member for Cook Cynthia Lui inspected the upgraded theatre and the new dedicated area for recovery today. “People from Mareeba and the surrounding area will soon have access to an upgraded operating theatre facility and, for the first time in a long time, endoscopy services,” Ms Lui said. “The theatre will continue to also provide general surgery, dental surgery, and birthing services. “It’s so important that we are delivering more and better services to all Queenslanders no matter where they live.” Mr Miles said that following the $1 million upgrade, the theatre was expected to re-open in mind-November. “Demand for endoscopy services is growing across the state and understandably residents in
Mareeba don’t want to travel all the way to Cairns to get a diagnosis,” he said. “This new endoscopy service will allow the hospital to diagnose gastrointestinal tract diseases such as cancers and abnormalities of the digestive tract and get on top of them quickly.” Due to the National Bowel Cancer Screening expansion, the demand for endoscopy services is expected to continue to increase by 5.7 per cent per year over the next 10 years. Mareeba Hospital Medical Superintendent Nikki Patching said by providing endoscopic services locally we will be able to treat more patients within clinically recommended timeframes and meet increasing future demand for endoscopic services. “And endoscopy/colonoscopy allows doctors to see the lining of a patient’s oesophagus, stomach, or colon,” she said. “If abnormal areas are seen, biopsies (tissue samples) can be taken for testing.”
Mareeba Acting Director of Nursing and Midwifery and Facility Manager Kerry Grigg said they were in the process of booking patients who live near Mareeba for their endoscopy. “This new service means we can provide safe and sustainable care closer to home for Mareeba residents,” she said. “The new endoscopy service also aligns with the Health Service’s strategy to increase the self-sufficiency of Mareeba Hospital and deliver care closer to home where safe to do so.” Ms Grigg and Dr Patching thanked the local community and hospital staff for their patience while the theatre was closed for this upgrade. “We are also very grateful to the Atherton and Cairns hospital teams, who provided assistance while the theatre was closed,” she said. Cairns and Hinterland Health Service Chief Executive Officer Clare Douglas said that the new endoscopy service aligns with the Health Service strategy to

ACTING READY: The Express’ cadet journalist Rhys Thomas, along with other cast members, are ready and exited to present Mareeba Theatre Groups 2019 end of year play, Apollo’s Tonic.
AN array of local actors will light up the newly refurbished Mareeba Theatre Group Hall in over a fortnight as the Mareeba Theatre Group host their Apollo’s Tonic play. The performance is set in the Apollo nightclub in the late 1980's when it was all about disco music, dancing and fluorescent lights. The cast is an extremely talented one, and one such person who can’t wait to be centrestage is first-time Mareeba Theatre Group performer Rhys Thomas. “I’ve never done anything
like this before, my first ever live performance was my senior year at MSHS in a play called ‘Back to the 80’s’,” he said. “I really regretted not doing anything theatre-related before that, so when this opportunity presented itself it was one I couldn’t pass up. As part of the performance, Rhys’ character will be a member of the ‘Rafia’, a group who are looking to extort the Apollo Nightclub for personal gain. “In my role I am “Crusher”, an enforcer who uses my enormous hands to crush skulls,” he said.
“I’m expecting it be a challenging role as it is a theatre restaurant performance, which will require me to engage with the crowd quite a bit which is nerve-racking.” For those interested in attending, Apollo’s Tonic will take place between Thursday, November 21 and Saturday, November 30. Bookings are currently open and can be purchased by visiting the Mareeba Theatre Group Inc. Facebook page and following the links to www.trybooking. com

Gather to remember
RESIDENTS across the Tablelands will be given the chance to recognise those Australian soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War I as next Monday marks Remembrance Day. At 11am on November 11, 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. That moment in history has attained a special significance in Australia in the post-war years, and there will be a number of ceremonies held on the Tablelands that community members can attend.

Disaster coordination centre officially opens A new Community Education and Disaster Coordination Centre for the Tablelands was officially opened in Atherton last Thursday. In Atherton to officially open the centre, Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the region’s residents were now better prepared for disasters and emergencies. “Communities in this region will be even more resilient and better equipped to face natural disasters, and it proves what can happen when local and state governments work in partnership,” Mr Hinchliffe said. “This state-of-the-art complex ensures the Tablelands Regional Council and emergency services officials have a fit-forpurpose facility to coordinate operations in response to emergencies.” The construction was made possible through the Palaszc-
zuk Government’s $60 million 2017-19 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP) and $2.25 million contributed by the Council. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford said the centre would also become a hub for training and education in areas such as first aid, disaster preparation and recovery, and business continuity. “An added bonus is that through construction, around 14 jobs were estimated to be created or supported, which is a fantastic result for families in the region,” he said. “It is exactly the type of project the LGGSP is designed to help councils deliver and improve liveability.” Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella said the facility would have a positive impact on the region for decades to

come. “Our community can have even greater confidence in their safety when facing emergency situations,” Mayor Paronella said. “This is an essential facility that provides local disaster management authorities the necessary tools to have far better oversight and coordination for response and recovery efforts, allowing them to act with improved speed and efficiency. “We are proud to partner with the Palaszczuk Government to deliver this facility, which is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when our two tiers of government work together for the community.” The LGGSP is designed to support councils to meet the needs of their community by providing funding for the delivery of priority capital infrastructure projects.

Academic excellence celebrated at awards night MAREEBA State High School students and their family and friends converged on the Mareeba International Club last Tuesday to recognise those students who have exemplified academic excellence in 2019. There were plenty of outstanding academic achievers who were recognised on the night; however it was Hannah MacLeod, Dailin Joshua and Alexis Ford who scored arguably the most prestigious awards on the night. Hannah MacLeod continued her exceptional final year of schooling as she followed up her Senior Sportsperson of the Year award at the Sports Presentation Night a week prior to take home the Senior Dux award. Dailin Joshua was named Junior Dux while Alexis Ford was recognised with the Caltex All-rounder award. MSHS Principal Scott Whybird commended the students for their commitment to their academics throughout 2019. “It’s the last year of the current OP syllabus, so it’s going to be interesting to see how the students go when the results come out,” he said. “This year is a smaller co-

thing about living in Mareeba, they definitely step up to the mark and I couldn’t be prouder of their achievements throughout the year.”
Students achievements awarded 2019 Senior Dux Megan Crane.

Do you know? That Christians have committed the most inhuman atrocities in the name of God, in the name of Jesus Christ, and in the name of the Bible. The fact that christians have been able and are still able to perpetrate the most shocking brutalities again and again with a clear conscience and a detailed theological alibi. A very extensive catalogue of sins have been committed throughout history by the churches. Phone 4092 7761

Who is your favourite cricket player? Pat Cummings. What do you like to do before a game to get prepared? Warm ups. What’s your favourite part in playing cricket? Batting. What is your Favourite food? Gnocchi. Members of the Mareeba Old Players and Supporters (MOPS) group gifted Mareeba’s Darcy Adams with a framed photo which features ex-State of Origin Queensland captains. Darcy has been an integral member of Mareeba Gladiators rugby league club in 2019, as he acted as the club’s ball-boy in all of the senior home games this season.
Breaking down barriers through rugby league MENTAL health is an issue which impacts people of all ages, which is why the Mareeba Gladiators in conjunction with Queensland Rugby League are making such a concerted effort to help individuals identify and manage their emotional and mental wellbeing in their youth. Last Wednesday saw teenagers between ages 13-17 attend an interactive rugby league workshop that incorporated key messages surrounding mental health, all in an attempt to display how
crucial a role the camaraderie and discipline required in rugby league can play in steeling your mental health. “I provide wellbeing support for players and staff off the field,” Queensland Rugby League Wellbeing and Education Manager Robert Hall said. “The message of my session is about getting in early and looking after your mindset before it becomes an issue. “Looking after your mental health and wellbeing isn’t about
waiting until something pops up, it’s about what things we can do to look after ourselves in life in general to ensure a problem doesn’t arise down the line. “Regarding rugby league specifically, we’re starting to understand more and more the impact mental health problems can have on your performance on the field too. “So, this session is also important in that it implores to the players that just like missing a game through an injured
hamstring or knee, you also can speak up and say you’re not right to train or play because of your state of mind. “The confidence required to say that by a player or staff member goes a long way towards breaking down that stigma we so often see with mental health.” In addition to the event held last week, Headspace is hosting a mental health workshop at the Mareeba Leagues Club today (Wednesday) from 4pm-6pm. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Pure entertainment at bullride
THE Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium was abuzz with excitement on Saturday night as it played host to the Great Northern Bullriding Series. A record crowd was on hand to witness some of the region’s best riders challenge themselves against some of the most ferocious bulls on the Northern Bullriding Series circuit. Whilst there were some stand-out rides from the night, the bulls appeared to get the better of the riders on multiple occasions as a number of the competitors failed to reach the 8 second mark which constitutes a successful ride. Below are some photos by Peter Roy and Darryl Day from the action-packed night... A full house on hand to catch the action.
