MAREEBA farmer Jessica Fealy has joined a team of women honoured for their inspirational work in the agricultural sector and has been listed as an ambassador in the latest collection of Antola Trading shirts. Antola Trading is known for its vibrant and colourful shirts which encourage confidence and femininity, Jessica Fealy from Sky Blue Produce is among one of the ladies to put their name behind their new collection of shirts. The women chosen as namesakes for the Antola Trading shirts represent agricultural professions that have moved beyond traditional farming methods, this can include politics, finance, publishing, start-ups and entrepreneurialism. Jessica was nominated for her work in business consulting especially in the agricultural sector and rural businesses. “I work in the business consulting space particularly around helping rural businesses and those that are on farms develop a new revenue stream,” she said. “The impact that I’ve had is about raising awareness to the fact that we can build businesses from anywhere in Australia. “I really think that the next Steve Jobs will come from rural Australia, we are very clever and good at innovating, coming up with new ideas because it’s a necessity.” To have a shirt named after her Jessica felt awkward at first as she doesn’t care much for the spotlight it brings, however she believes that the message the shirts and ambassadors bring is

The boy from the bush is coming to town Lee Kernaghan is excited to be heading to Mareeba in October for the Savannah Summer Series at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds.

THE upcoming Savannah Summer Series have left their best secret to last announcing that 37 time Golden Guitar winner Lee Kernaghan will be the head-line act.

The concert series is happening over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in October and concert goers will be able to see Lee Kernaghan, as well as Aussie country stars Casey Barnes,

The Buckleys, Salt Bush Six, The Roadtrippers and The Ayres Rockettes. The Savannah Summer Series is a smaller pop up series that was set up to replace the

Savannah in the Round concert which was postponed until 2021 due to COVID. The Savannah Summer Series will be at the Salt House in Cairns on Thursday, October 1

and Mareeba’s Rodeo Grounds on Friday, October 2 with free camping on the Saturday night in Mareeba. Lee said that the Summer Series is happening after COVID shut the big Savannah in the Round festival down. “Instead we are now able to put on a couple of special events called the Savannah Summer Series that are all COVID safe events,” he said. “Special precautions will be taken to ensure that everyone is socially distanced while still enjoying some amazing music from some amazing artists.” Even though Lee lives down south, Far North Queensland holds a special place in his heart. “I have a special affinity to FNQ as I asked my wife to marry me on the beach at Port Douglas,” he said. “There’s a saying in Queensland, the cream always rises to the top.” Lee also added that he will be playing with Keith Urban’s old band, The Salt Bush Six. “I will be getting up on stage

and playing with them.” Even though The Savannah in the Round was postponed for 2020, Lee said that he has some big announcements to make regarding the 2021 concert. “I get to announce on stage the line-up for the Savannah in the Round concert in 2021 including the big international acts that will be playing in FNQ next year,” Lee said. “I’m looking forward to getting up and playing in FNQ because I haven’t played anywhere since March. “It’s going to be adrenaline pumping, hopefully I haven’t forgotten the words to the Boys from the Bush and The Outback Club, there’s nothing like playing to an FNQ crowd.” The fun continues on Saturday, October 3, when the Great Northern Bullriding Series rolls into town, with another day packed full of entertainment for the entire family.  For more information turn to pages 16-17 or to buy tickets go to www.savannahintheround.com.au

Knuth to run for Hill again HILL MP Shane Knuth has confirmed that he will be the Katter Australia Party (KAP) candidate again for the seat of Hill in the upcoming state election. Mr Knuth said, “It was becoming clear the neither of the major parties would win the October 31 election in their own

right which placed the KAP in a strong position,” “We have proven that we not only talk the talk but walk the walk with the completion of stage one of the Atherton Hospital upgrade, the new Dimbulah Health Centre, road upgrades, receiving funding to reinforce

the river wall of the Innisfail Bowls Club, the East Feluga Intersection, and the near completion of the Mission Boating Infrastructure Project,” he said. “I have a vision of continuing to progress even more projects in the future if re-elected this includes protecting our

dairy industry, realistic and improved water infrastructure such as the North Johnstone Transfer, and supporting the sugar cane industry with cogeneration.” The seat of Hill has been held by Katter Australia party and Mr Knuth since 2017 when the new seat of Hill was established.

Much of the seat was previously part of the abolished seat of Dalrymple. Shane Knuth, the last member for Dalrymple, transferred to Hill and retained it for KAP on a large swing. The Queendland State Election is on October 31.

MP Shane Knuth will run again for the seat of Hill.

PRIME Minister Scott Morrison, the Deputy Prime Minister and federal politicians got the chance to sample some of the finest food and beverages from the Kennedy electorate when Bob Katter showcased his food bowl to the Federal Parliament last week. The taste test of Kennedy included products from Bingil Bay Beef, Jacques Coffee, Skybury Coffee, Golden Drop Winery, Rainforest Bounty, Rainforest Heart, Emerald Creek Ice Creamery, Beach Harvest Australian Coconuts, Nerada tea, Gallo’s Dairyland, Mungali Dairy, All Fish for Dogs, Charley’s Chocolate Factory, Bingil Bay Distillery, The Whole Food Company and National Evolu-

tion Company. Bob Katter said his office had created the food bowl to show the nation’s leaders what can be achieved when you ‘just add water,’ and a little bit of hard work. “Kennedy is the nation’s most successful fruit and vegetable bowl because we have water,” he said. “The Cassowary Coast and Hinchinbrook regions have the highest average rainfall of anywhere in Australia and on the Tablelands the Tinaroo Dam and Mareeba/Dimbulah irrigation scheme allows the area to flourish. “This liquid gold means we can produce everything from bananas, to mangoes, avocados, potatoes, citrus, strawberries,

coffee, nuts, sugar, dairy produce, unique wine and spirits, tea, honey, sugar cane, natural product ranges comprising of spreads, jams and cooking sauces – the list goes on.” In July of this year Mr Katter asked local producers to register their interest in participating in the Food Bowl project. “We would like to thank all the local farmers and producers who contributed to the Kennedy food bowl. Their efforts were not in vain and left a strong impression with Scott Morrison and his Ministers,” Mr Katter said. “We are ready, we are able to deliver to the country – just add water and vital legislation to promote and protect the food production and agricultural sec-

tors. The size of the population in North Queensland will double bringing with it great prosperity.” Mr Katter received several thanky ou notes from various ministers including The Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Resources, Hon Joel Fitzgibbon writing, “I wanted to offer our sincere thanks for the package North Queensland products you provided our office.” “Mr Fitzgibbon greatly appreciates the fabulous selection of products you have provide. As you rightly point out, North Queensland is the food bowl of Australia and we must take every opportunity to showcase and grow our fantastic agriculture.”

Child protection is everyone’s business CHILD Protection Week is being held this year between September 6 and 12. The week focuses on the message that ‘child protection is everyone’s business’ and to ensure that communities take responsibility for children being protected. A Queensland Police Service police spokesperson said that adults are essential in ensuring children’s wellbeing and safety. “The challenge for adults is to ensure that they are listening to children and creating an environment where children feel comfortable to speak when they are not safe,” they said. “With the increasing use

of technology in the home, the challenge also extends to keeping our children safe whilst they are online. “For parents and carers this might involve talking to children about what being unsafe might be in the home, online or out in the community. This conversation might extend to making plans about what to do in situations where children have these feelings of being unsafe.” Queensland Police also said that educators in childcare and schools play a valuable role in educating children to recognise their own personal safety networks and enabling them to recognise the feelings associated

with not being safe. “Through the ‘Adopt a Cop Program’ police have been visiting local schools to reinforce these messages and identify Police as being another important part of the safety network for children.” To assist schools in educating children about being cybersafe, Police have also been delivering the ‘Think U Know’ program to children from Prep to Year 12 levels. This is an AFP program which is delivered by the QPS to local schools. For more information on cyber safety go to www.Thinkuknow.org.au

WINNER: Tony Quinn’s Targar winning 2018 Nissan GT-R R35).

WHEN Malanda local Tom English first saw the Targa Great Barrier Reef rally in 2018 with his friend Trent Vidler they thought it was something they both needed to do. Tom has owned the 1967 HR Holden ute nicknamed ‘Gloria’ for about 14 years and thought Targa would be a great excuse to drive his favourite car. “The first year they had the event in Cairns we went out and watched it and thought we have to do this,” Tom said. “I had the car sitting in the shed and thought we need to get it out and use it. “This is our second year, the class we go in isn’t competitive we just like going for a cruise, we are entering just to have fun.” Tom has owned 'Gloria' for roughly 14 years and said that when he bought her she had seen better days. “She is a 1967 HR Holden that I restored myself, with help from a few mates,” he said. About eight years ago we stripped it right back, cut the rust out and repainted it.” Tom’s co-driver and mate since high school, Trent Vidler also shares his passion for the Targa event. “We both have young families and we are

participating for fun rather than competition,” Tom said. “It was my weekend drive but now that I have three kids it’s pretty impractical, so Targa is a great excuse to take Gloria for a spin. “I’d love to go to Tasmania and enter that one as well, but it’s not happening at the moment due to COVID.” Due to COVID entrants for the 2020 GBR event dropped significantly with about 270 entrants last year and only about 80 this year. Tom said regardless of the number of entrants he enjoyed himself and can’t wait for next year. “This was one of the best years, driving and talking to the drivers and spectators was so much fun,” he said. “Apart from a few wet spots at the top of the Gillies which gave as a few heart stopping moments, it was great letting ‘Gloria’ loose on the course.” As for the actual Targa results, Tony Quinn stormed to a commanding win of the Targa GBR for 2020. The experienced high profile Queensland businessman and co-driver Brian Foster mastered the 18-stage event to win by just over four minutes. Quinn’s only challenger,

the Mercedes AMG GT R of Luke Anear and Andy Sarandis speared off on the second stage of the final day, suffering radiator damage. While Anear rejoined the event with a patched-up Merc, it left the rapid and robust 2018 Nissan GT-R R35 with a commanding lead ahead of the final four stages of the popular tarmac rally. Quinn was in supreme form when it counted on the final day by topping four of the six Tablelands tests to win the Outright and It’s Live in Queensland GT Outright classes. “It is a real thrill to win Targa Great Barrier Reef which is a great event that has a positive effect on the local community,” Said Quinn, a two-time Targa Tasmania winner. “The Nissan didn’t miss a beat over the three days and is really suited to the roads around Cairns.” The GT Trophy Class Lotus Exige of Wayne Udy and Mia Williams finished second outright on top of easily winning their speed limited class. Shannons Classic Handicap duo of Peter Gluskie and Samantha Winter (1985 BMW 325i) class won by just over

Volunteers recognised for resilience during COVID

Do you have information on the mystery artist who gave the Gillies tree frog a makeover? Meals on Wheels organisations all across Australia were recognised last month for their hard work and dedication through the COVID-19 lockdown period.

NATIONAL Meals on Wheels Day was held last month. The day recognised the dedicated volunteer force who stepped up to help protect the health and wellbeing of vulnerable Australians during the COVID-19 pandemic. With many of the Meals on Wheels volunteers being in the high risk age bracket for COVID-19, younger volunteers had to step up and support their communities. During the COVID-19 pan-

demic the Federal Government provided vital additional funding which allowed Meals on Wheels services to continue delivering their meals to an increased number of vulnerable Australians. The Mareeba Meals on Wheels experienced a huge influx of clients during this period with 10 new clients which is a significant increase for such a small operation. President of the Mareeba Meals on Wheels Patricia Gold-

finch said that they managed well during the lockdown period. “For a small organisation like us getting 10 new clients was a significant increase,” she said. “We had some volunteers step away for their health during the period so at the moment we are still looking for more volunteers. “I consider us to be an essential service so within that period we were able to ensure that our

aged residents were still receiving their meals.” Meals on Wheels Australia President Sharyn Broer said that the organisation is incredibly grateful for the unwavering commitment and generosity of its volunteers. “We are so thankful for our volunteers, regardless of the emergency – devastating bushfires or in a pandemic, our volunteers continue to roll up their sleeves and deliver life changing support,” she said.

Gillies Range tree frog mystery A MYSTERIOUS rock with a painting of a green tree frog has had a makeover thanks to a mystery artist or artists. Though not a lot is known about when the original tree frog was painted it’s believed that it was first painted over 25 years ago by artist or artists unknown and has had a few touch ups over the years. According to witnesses it was painted in the middle of the night using ladders and rollers on long handles. Other locals who have noticed the updated frog have also

been asking what happened to the bikini tree near the bottom of the Gillies which was a tree that had two largish bumps that the mystery artist would paint a bikini onto. It’s believed the bikini tree was destroyed in a fire in 2009. On social media locals have been commenting on other formations and paintings including the whale, the rock elephant and some red lips. Cupitt received medal from Governor

Ashely Cupitt was finally awarded his Order of Australia Medal by Queensland Governor Paul De Jersey at a private ceremony last weekend in Cairns

TABLELAND local Ashley Cupitt was awarded his Order of Australia Medal after the Queensland Governors visit to the far north recently. Mr Cupitt has worked and lived on the Tablelands for nearly as long as he can remember and has become a stalwart member of the community and community groups around the Tablelands. Starting as an Auxiliary Fire Fighter Mr Cupitt worked his way up through the ranks over the years and became the Captain of the Yungaburra Fire Station. Volunteering at the Atherton Bowls Club, being on the ANZAC Committee and the forming and running of the Atherton Army Cadets are just some of his accomplishments. Mr Cupitt was extremely humbled by this award and sees it as a huge honour to be presented this award. “It’s a great honour to be recognised by your country for doing something you love,” he said.

“It’s a culmination of everything I’ve done over the years. “All I’ve really done is tried my best to help people whenever I could.” Mr Cupitt also owns and operates a boxing gym that not only teaches kids how to defend themselves, but also sees it as a way to help mentor young kids. He comes from a long line of boxing lineage with his father being a welterweight champion; Mr Cupitt decided to follow in those footsteps and started hitting the bag in 1967. After meeting the Queensland Governor the honourable Paul De Jersey, Mr Cupitt was star-struck. “Meeting the Governor was excellent, how many people get to meet the Governor face to face,” he said. “It is a huge highlight in my life sometimes you wonder if it’s real. “People are saying all these nice things about me, people I’ve never met before.”

New commissioner appointed NORTH Queensland farmers now will have to apply to a government-appointed rehabilitation commissioner for future cropping and horticulture projects. The Queensland Labor Party with support from the Liberal National Party enacted legislation on August 14 in State Parliament to appoint a mining rehabilitation commissioner including new requirements for farmers in the six Great Barrier Reef catchment areas. Leader of the Katter Australia Party (KAP) Mr Robbie Katter said all rural major party MPs, except Member for Callide Colin Boyce who crossed the floor, had let down their electorates and farmers across Queensland by voting to legislate for a government-

appointed rehabilitation commissioner. “The new laws, which primarily instate a mining rehabilitation commissioner but also detail new requirements for growers in the Great Barrier Reef catchment, will make cropping and horticulture projects in the Great Barrier Reef catchment subject to the commissioner’s approval,” said Mr Katter. Mr Katter said the KAP was deeply concerned that farmers trying to develop their businesses would be caught up in the new law and subject to “ideological politics”. “We are particularly worried about the stipulation that the commissioner would not be required to have any particular academic qualifications and

could be appointed on a political or ideological basis by the government of the day,” he said. “The consequences of this could be dire and could hold up development for years.” KAP candidate for Cook Tanika Parker said Cynthia Lui should have done the same as Colin Boyce. “It’s a disgrace that she has sat back and not stood up for rural farmers,” Ms Parker said. “On the other hand Colin Boyce has shown a great amount of integrity and I commend him for his actions. “It takes guts to do what he did, but he understands that rural farmers must be looked after, especially in this day and age.” Member for Hill Shane Knuth was just as scathing

saying the bill was introduced to appease voters in Brisbane to make it appear both the major parties cared about the Great Barrier Reef. “Both the Labor and LNP did not even consider the impact it would have on North Queensland farmers,” Mr Knuth said. “The Bill does nothing at all to improve the Great Barrier Reef but it places a massive burden on our farmers. “As the election draws near, the LNP has now embraced the Labor government’s approach that votes in Brisbane is far more important than the welfare of our farmers and communities. “We are gutted that our farmers, who have led us through COVID and not let us down, are now being treated

like criminals.” It’s believed that all farmers within the GBR catchment areas will be affected by the new rules and the new commissioner. The six GBR catchment areas are: Cape York, Wet Tropics region, Burdekin, Mackay, Fitzroy and the Burnett Mary region. KAP’s Robbie Katter, Shane Knuth, Nick Dametto and LNP Member Colin Boyce all voted against the new commissioner. In a statement from the Member for Cook Cynthia Lui “The Environmental Protection and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2020 (EPOLA Bill) passed by the Queensland Parliament with the support of the opposition, will further improve Queensland’s worldleading mine rehabilitation

framework and improve financial assurance outcomes for the state’s resources sector,” she said. “The Bill will ensure Queensland continues to lead the way in the resources sector and will encourage mine rehabilitation work in regional Queensland. “This Bill is the next step in our government’s work to improve mine rehabilitation and create jobs as part of Queensland’s plan for economic recovery. “The Rehabilitation Commissioner will further enhance Queensland’s rehabilitation framework and provide clear advice on best practice rehabilitation for the mining sector.”

Teachers let their hair down

TEACHERS at Mareeba State High School got the chance to unwind after the stressful events of the COVID-19 lockdown period with some team building and activities last Friday. During the COVID-19 lockdown teachers all around Australia were struck with a heightened workload and immense amounts of stress juggling the wellbeing of their students as well as their own children or other issues. With this in mind MSHS Principal Scott Whybird decided to run Teacher Day after their regular curriculum and modera-

tion meeting last Friday which was on a student free day. The activities available after the meetings were designed to help the staff with team building while others were designed just to be a whole lot of fun. “We acknowledge that it’s been a very stressful time for the whole community but for a lot of the teachers in particular there’s been additional stress,” Mr Whybird said.“So we want to give them the opportunity to have a bit of fun in the afternoon and unwind. “We’re doing this additional part to look at the wellbeing side

of our teachers and staff.” The activities included some from the ‘good old days’ with activities and games being played by the staff that some played when they were in school. The goal over the day was to make sure that teachers are satisfied around their curriculum needs and to relieve some pent up stress. “This is a caring profession we’re here for kids but we’re also here for each other,” Mr Whybird said. “So today is about supporting each other and make sure that we look after our own wellbeing also.”

Objections over options for Kuranda cemetery

Kuranda resident Mark Freeman has objected to council looking at other options and believes that extending the current Kuranda cemetery is the best option.

IN July of this year the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) passed a motion to find a new cemetery for residents living in or around Kuranda. The Kuranda Cemetery is expected to reach capacity within the next few years and Council has been calling for community feedback regarding a new location. Located at 1300 Kennedy Highway, the Kuranda Cemetery is sited on a 5.3-acre parcel of land that has provided a place for the laying of residents since the early 1900s, with the earliest inscription dated 1910. Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said Council has been investigating alternative options. “Council has identified four possible locations for a new cemetery, and we will be seeking feedback from the community on the proposed alternatives,” she said. Mayor Toppin said that there are four potential locations. “Expansion of the current Kuranda Cemetery, development of a new cemetery at Caroona Street, development of a new cemetery at Gregory Terrace and the development of a new cemetery at Koah,” Cr Toppin said. “While the Koah site is the recommended option as the most cost-effective and provides the best long-term solution.”

Long-time resident Mark Freeman has objected to council looking at other options and believes that extending the current Kuranda cemetery is the best option. “It’s unnecessary to build at Koah, its easier and cheaper to get more land at Kuranda,” he said. “Residents of Kuranda don’t want to be buried at Koah, residents want to be buried on their land. “Especially Djabugai descendants, they are Aboriginal rainforest people and Koah is eucalypt/grass forest.” Mr Freeman also claims that the proposed land at Koah floods. “The site at Koah is the meeting point of two creeks and it floods. Nobody wants to see their dead floating down the river.” “Have a look at the repairs that are taking place to the road now from the flooding about 18 months ago.” Mr Freeman has also suggested a more controversial option to find more land, by reusing unmarked graves. “There are about 50 unmarked graves and nobody knows who they are. They are close to 100 hundred years old,” Mr Freeman said. “We won’t need graves for another 20 years – you get the community involved now so that

everybody has got time to investigate and have their say.” The Express asked specific questions to the MSC about the above points raised by Mr Freeman. According to a council spokesperson “The development cost to expand the current site would be approximately $600,000, with a functional capacity of 84 plots.” “The development cost for the full stage one of the Koah site would be approximately $890,000, with a functional capacity of 1100 plots, however this stage could be broken down into multiple smaller stages. Future stages would cost over $2 million to develop, with a functional capacity of over 2800 sites.” “The Koah site is not prone to flooding. With regards to the roadworks currently being carried out along the Kennedy Highway, these are works by Transport and Main Roads and are associated with the safety upgrades along the corridor.” “Council thanks the community for its feedback. Council received 40 submissions that will be taken into consideration. A recommendation will be made to Council at a future Council meeting.”

ADVERTORIAL

Play-based learning at the core of Steiner education RECENT research looking at the role of play in learning is changing the way schools in Australia educate and teach in the early years. Play-based learning is a natural core component of Steiner education in the preschool and primary years. Ms Shelley Bowen, Education Director at Cairns Hinterland Steiner School (CHSS) explains that “the research shows the overwhelming benefit of the role of play in supporting intellectual achievement and social wellbeing in children. At our School, play and learning are not separated, but intertwined in our Early Childhood programmes.” Steiner education has a holistic view of learning. “Children are born to play, and their motivation to play provides fertile ground for learning and the development of foundational skills that will set them up for academic success in the future. The Steiner educational approach to Early Childhood is discovery and exploration rather than instruction. Whether playing alone or with others, play activities provide an essential platform for children to discover, to question and to communicate.” says Ms Bowen. At CHSS, in an average week, the 4-6 year old’s experience periods of free play (often involving construction activities, role playing, pretend play); periods of artistic activities (painting, modelling, music, movement, and practical activities like cooking, gardening and craft); oral literacy and language (story-telling, puppet shows); and physical activities (games, bush walks) and all on a basis of rhythm, routine and repetition. “This is an education that responds to where the child is ‘at’ and one that many parents, at the school, say they wished they had had themselves,” said Ms Bowen. Recent pedagogical theories of child-

development support that the skills needed for learning are all present in play-based learning. These are skills like gross and fine motor skills, social skills (communication, problem-solving, conflict resolution), emotional skills like empathy, self-regulation, self-awareness, and creativity (imagination, making and expressing). “Children who learn via play-based programs generally have higher learning outcomes than those that are in direct-instruction programs,” said Ms Bowen. ”Students in direct-instruction learning are more likely to experience negative effects like stress, not wanting to go to school and behavioural problems whereas Steiner education is the ‘slow cook’ method of education – children enter formal learning at age seven and at their own level and pace.” Cairns Hinterland Steiner School operates from early childhood, through to primary and high school. Nestled in 40 acres of rainforest close to Kuranda, CHSS maintains small class sizes to support a sense of community and individual attention for students and a dedicated bus service operating for students from the Mareeba community. CHSS have spaces available for 4-6 years in 2021 but they are filling fast. Call to book a tour on 4093 8809 or email admin@chss.qld.edu.au. Folk Festival set to go ahead for 2020

Kaban musician Carinda Christie is looking forward to playing oat the stages Tablelands Folk Festival in October.

THE Tablelands Folk Festival is the longest running folk festival in Queensland and despite COVID-19 the festival is going ahead for 2020. Held in the Yungaburra village, it features family entertainment over four days from local musician’s and artisans at a number of different venues. Festival Director of the Tablelands Folk Festival Michael Hodgkins said that over the years the festival has evolved into one of the most sought after music festivals in Australia for both performers and audience members. “We inject over $1.5 million dollars into the local economy in

three days, so it’s a great event for the Tablelands,” said Mr Hodgkins. The first festival in Yungaburra was held in 1981 and Michael said they weren’t even sure if there were going to have a festival this year due to COVID. “Due to the border closures we have made this year an all Queensland event,” he said. “We made the decision to go ahead and next year we will celebrate our 40th birthday.” As well as local performers there will also be workshops, a song writing competition and a poetry breakfast. This year there will be seven

venues with most events starting at 10am in the morning and performing through the day and into the night Mr Hodgkins said there will be a thorough COVID plan in place. “Our plan will encompass all the venues plans that are already in place, plus we have our own plan for the festival.” he said. Some of the entertainment this year includes, Port Douglas-based band Benny and The Clones, Cairns singer songwriter Tessa Devine and Far North festival favourites and four time Bluegrass Golden Guitar finalists, The Hillbilly Goats. Kaban musician Carinda

Christie is one of the performers looking forward to getting back and playing on the stages in Yungaburra over the weekend. “I’m playing a solo spot as well as two spots as a trio and I’m also running a vocal rhythm guitar workshop on the Sunday,” Carinda said. “I haven’t played the festival for a while, last time it was great so I’m really looking forward to getting back and playing as well as watching the other performers.” The Tablelands Folk Festival is happening from October 23 to 25. Accusations, mistaken identities, and romances run wild in this traditional, laughout-loud farce. Two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing have been secretly making wine to keep the convent's doors open, but Paul and Sally, reporters and former fiancees, are hot on their trail. They go undercover as a nun and priest, but their presence, combined with the addition of a new nun, spurs paranoia throughout the convent that spies have been sent from Rome to shut them down. Wine and secrets are inevitably spilled as everyone tries to preserve the convent and reconnect with lost loves.

BAXTER IS A GOOD BOY We have a new war on Fireweed … and it has four legs and is furry! Fireweed is toxic plant that competes with pastures and can cause livestock to lose condition and die. We have been working with landowners for several years to map and treat infestations, and we recently received a grant to use a detector dog to look for plants. Over three months Baxter and his handler Jacqui Richards, from Dogs for Conservation, worked with our staff, landowners and volunteers to survey outside current known Fireweed areas. Baxter’s superior detection skills locate small and isolated plants, even in long grass, while humans can typically only detect flowering specimens in relatively open areas. Baxter’s nose was hugely successful — he located several young seedlings outside the known areas. Read about Fireweed at trc.qld.gov.au. This project received grant funding from the Australian Government’s Communities Environment Program.

ROCKET SCIENCE Our libraries are running free Rocket Science sessions in Atherton, Malanda, Ravenshoe and Yungaburra on 29 and 30 September. Coen Community Blitz Clean up in October, 2018.

Cook Shire Council wins Local Government award COOK Shire Council’s popular Community Blitz program has won the Award for Excellence in the category of ‘Doing More with Less’ at the 2020 Local Government Managers Australia Queensland (LGMA Queensland) Awards for Excellence. The Council’s Blitz program began in 2018 at Coen, when Council staff, community volunteers and stakeholder groups saw an opportunity to work together to implement a community improvement program to tackle issues identified by residents.

The event in Coen was so successful that subsequent events have been held at the Cooktown Cemetery, then Lakeland and Laura in 2019, and Ayton in 2020 as part of the State and Federal government’s Community Development Program. “Simple but effective, our Community Blitz events are important because they bring the community together to improve not only the appearance of buildings, beaches, gardens and infrastructure, but also help build resiliency in preparation for the disaster

season,” Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said. “Winning the LGMA Queensland Award for Excellence in this category is a testament to the power of teamwork and cross-Council collaboration, as well as the dedication of all the volunteers, stakeholders and community groups that have been involved,” said Cr Scott. “We look forward to being able to deliver the program to other communities across Cook Shire in the years to come.”

THE Northern Gulf Resource Management Group in partnership with Tagalaka Aboriginal Corporation has recently received funding to develop a food security strategy and a small aquaponics facility for the Croydon Shire. The Tagalaka Rangers and Northern Gulf have started work on developing the aquaponics site on Sircom Street with power, water and a custom-built greenhouse being added to the block last week while the aquaponics unit will be built on site later in September. Experienced facilitators and researchers Lyndal Scobell of Community Bred and Erica Hughes of Farmer Meets Foodie have been contracted to research food security issues in relation to disaster management for the Croydon area. As part of this research they will be holding a community meeting on Wednesday October 7. It’s hoped that this will be the community’s chance to have a say about the issues that impact them and have input into the food security strategy that will be developed by Lyndal and Erica for the Croydon Shire. With a new site and a new project underway, Northern Gulf is now seeking a new employee to support the operation of the aquaponics project. Next stage for school chess team STATE CHESS: The St Stephen’s Catholic College chess team will advance to the state finals after their success at the interschool level.

THE St Stephen’s Catholic College chess team recently won the Far North Queensland Interschool Chess Competition with one student boasting a perfect eight from eight wins. The four student team went up against some strong competition from both St Augustine’s College and Cairns High to qualify for the state finals in October. The St Stephen’s team consists of Jack Burnside, Harry Heath, Dante Cadorin and team captain Lago Roche-Maxwell. Lago placed first in the indi-

vidual standing after taking out eight perfect wins to help get his team over the line and winning the competition. The team will now head to Brisbane hoping to improve on their result from last year where they were awarded the second best regional team in the state and seventh overall. Lago was the second best regional player in the state at last year’s event and is excited to return. “I’m confident that our team has the ability to perform well at this year tournament,” he said.

The Australian Government is extending JobKeeper until 28 March 2021 and the temporary Coronavirus Supplement for those on income support until 31 December 2020, after which income support will continue. QUEENSLAND Police are asking for assistance from the public in helping to identifying family or friends who may have placed or are maintaining a roadside memorial on the Western side of the Kennedy Highway, between the intersections of Spena Road and Tichum Creek Quarry Road. A police spokesperson said “Occasionally the memorials are positioned in areas where roadworks are required to be undertaken which in turn can require temporary removal of the memorials. These situations include road widening and general safety upgrades.” “TMR have a policy where-

by they work to identify and make contact with those associated with memorial placement and care, and working with them to achieve the best possible outcome for the reinstatement of memorials once works are completed.” “We usually have a pretty good success rate but sometimes it can be difficult to track down those associated with the longer standing memorials.” Police are now seeking assistance in being put in touch with those who are associated with this particular memorial. TRC grants supporting the community TABLELANDS Regional Council has delivered over 117 grants valued at $130,000 over this past financial year in the form of community, business and arts grants. The council gives out grants to relevant community groups and others in order to help them with their events or community projects. Grants like the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) provided nearly $45,000 to assist professional and emerging artists, including locally in TRC. Deputy Mayor Kevin Cardew is pleased with the support that Council has been able to provide. “Our Economic Develop-

ment Fund grants up to $5000 for eligible parties to undertake activites that will help grow business, investment and employment in the region,” he said. “Supporting local businesses is important to us and these grants are one way that we can do this. “Last financial year we provided $20,000 to four businesses and associations.” Bella Capella Community Choir Director Christina Bahrdt spoke of the benefits that the RADF had done for the choir. “During the weeks of physical distancing the Bella Capella Community Choir stayed connected through digital media while learning, singing and

recording a specially arranged piece of music,” she said. “A RADF grant from TRC made it possible to engage a professional video editor at various stages of the process. “The result was a video that is a treasured memento of our singing in lockdown.” The Community Grants Program for 2020-21 is taking applications now and the next round of RADF opens this month, September 21. “These grant programs are a great chance for the community to further their experiences, provide support and development, and make the best of available opportunities, and I encourage you to apply,” said Deputy Mayor Cardew.

Park mural complete

A CRISIS OUT THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR VIOLENCE IN HERE. THERE'S NO PLACE FOR

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE The new traditional new mural at Firth Park in Mareeba which was completed with the help of the PCYC.

FIRTH Park in Mareeba has received a fresh coat of paint in the form of a traditional mural that was recently completed by members of the Mareeba PCYC and a Muluridji descended artist. The PCYC worked with local youth and a local Muluridji artist to design and paint the artwork. The young designers were encouraged to bring an adult family member to the activity to encourage passing down of cultural heritage. The artwork depicts the Granite Creek surroundings with the blue, winding creek and kids' footprints along the banks as they walk between the creek and homes. The cricket bats show the location of the Cricket Club at Firth Park. The leaves and trees of the bushland surrounding the parks are also

shown, with background orange representing the afternoon sunset. PCYC Mareeba Branch Manager Mary-Anne West hopes the new mural acts as a deterrent to further graffiti and damage. “We hope the mural will dissuade people from vandalising the kiosk and increase the sense of ownership and pride,” she said. “The kids had a creative hand in both the painting of the mural and they came up with the murals idea and meaning.” The project received funding through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) which is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Mareeba Shire Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

PHOTO OF OPINION

THE WEEK

Think big

Recently it took me one and a half hours to get from Cairns to Mareeba. Anyone who travels this road regularly will know how many road works are currently taking place on the Kennedy Highway. While the improvements are a move in the right direction at best they are only a band aid fix. Once upon a time Australia was known for building big things, things like the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Snowy Mountains Hydro scheme and the Coolgardie pipeline in Western Australia. Now it seems like we can’t even get a road fixed without having 17 environmental impact statements, a building assessment and a several rounds of community consultation. By the time all of this red tape is done, we have changed governments and the whole process starts again. Coming up to the state election we are hearing a lot about the Bradfield scheme, the Lakeland Dam and the Nullinga Dam. The Bradfield scheme was actually first proposed back in 1938, by the guy that designed and built the Sydney Harbour Bridge (how’s that for procrastination.)

THE WINNER OF THE TABLELANDS AND SURROUNDS PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP THIS WEEK IS DON CASWELL

The photo is of a Black-shouldered Kite sitting on a fence post. The photo was taken on a farm fence along a dirt country road near Kairi. I am a retiree with a lifelong love of birds. I particularly enjoy photographing them. In order to foster a wider appreciation of our beautiful birds, I have set up a Facebook page and similarly named website to showcase bird photography and encourage people, from beginner to professional, to take an interest and submit their own photos. www.bestbirdphotos.com.au Enter your photos via the Tablelands and Surrounds Photography Group on Facebook

When voting in the next state election we need to think about which politicians actually have the intestinal fortitude to think big. Big projects not only help with the economy and jobs, they also help with our identity as a nation and our self-esteem as a country. How proud are we of the Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House and Uluru (sure we didn’t build it, but it’s big and we are proud of it) When you look back at some of the biggest decisions made in our political history, they weren’t popular at the time but with 20/20 hindsight we now realise they were the correct. Decisions like John Howards gun ban, The Fraser Government’s approach to Vietnamese refugees and the saving of the Daintree Wet Tropics area. The names of Lee Kuan Yew, José Mujica and Fidel Castro may not mean much to Australians but to the residents of Singapore, Uruguay and Cuba they are heroes, because they got things done. What we need is a benevolent dictator, someone who wants to get things done, regardless of how unpopular they may become.

LETTERS have your say.. Help us to help you THE Federal Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud has secured an examination of the domestic fresh food and dairy supply chain by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The Perishable Agricultural Products and Dairy Industry Code Inquiry was prompted by numerous complaints from primary producers who describe an unfair market and feel supermarkets and their agents hold too much power in negotiations over supply contracts. This three month inquiry will allow a comprehensive review into how the supply chain, including processors and retailers deal with their suppliers. While I acknowledge that for many, supermarkets’ abuse of power has been personally experienced and well-known, I am urging each and every producer or agri-food market player to put their voice on the record – even confidentially. We need Queenslanders from all industries, from dairy, to meat or horticulture, to make submissions to the ACCC. There needs to be no doubt left in anyone’s mind around the tactics used by supermarkets flexing their bargaining power. The reality is that the ACCC needs greater powers and penalties to take on the supermarkets. They won’t

get this without your input. In one of the only successful cases brought against the majors, Coles demanded ‘profit gap’ payments from small suppliers and threatened their business if they didn’t pay. Justice Gordon said of Coles’ behaviour, “Coles’ misconduct was serious, deliberate and repeated. Coles misused its bargaining power. Its conduct was “not done in good conscience”. It was contrary to conscience. Coles treated its suppliers in a manner not consistent with acceptable business and social standards which apply to commercial dealings.” Sadly, this sentiment isn’t new. While there are farmers who have successful dealings with their buyers, there are those commodity groups who don’t and it is important while this opportunity exists the ACCC hears from them. Submissions are scheduled to open on August 31, and the ACCC will report to the Government by 30 November, and I encourage anyone who has had commercial dealings with supermarkets and their agents to make their views known. Make no mistake, your efforts won’t be in vain. I will be making sure a spotlight is finally held over the big supermarkets’ practices. Senator Susan McDonald LNP Senator QLD

BEAUTYandWELLNESS Beauty: What does wellness have to do with it?

DID you know that beauty routines are actually an act of self love and nurturing? Australian women often don’t realise the essential role of wellness in the most holistic sense of beauty; It’s understated, but beauty and wellness inspire each other; with looking good and feeling good being intimately connected. True beauty begins from within, and when you’re honouring yourself and your health it’s the simple things that contribute to an overall sense of wellbeing. A conscious way of eating, movement that makes you feel good, stimulating the senses with your favourite essential oils in that bath you’ve been longing for, or slowing down to meditate or receive that wellness massage. After working in the health and wellness industry for over a decade, Kiana saw an exciting opportunity to combine her passion for wellbeing with the beauty salon model. “To be honest, it was quite the learning curve, I had no idea hair care could be antiaging or gluten free and I realised just how much the concept of beauty in the industry is changing.” Wellness is becoming implemented in salon products which offer nutrient rich and all natural alternatives that you can use with confidence of clean beauty; as this is where you can begin to heal your body from the impacts of chemicals which could be overloading your body. We have become aware that stress and toxic load can contribute to premature aging, weight gain and hormone deregulation, among other health issues. It's the little everyday changes that make a big difference, so care has been given to what retail products are offered in the salon. JAK Salons is not radically changing all product lines overnight, but they are headed in a healthier direction. And there's certainly a

supply and demand and having better choices; it's beauty with a clear conscience. Even supporting local businesses, JAK offers locally produced refreshments for clients, in order to contribute to the wellbeing of the local economy. With big city experience in larger salons, JAK’s Salon Manager and leading stylist Bonnie has embraced this

JAK Salons is now looking to expand their team with positions available for qualified professionals that share their unique philosophy. Experience the difference. Q Fever warning TABLELAND residents who work with animals are being urged to get vaccinated against Q Fever amid a spike in cases across the Tablelands. The illness is caused by the bacteria Coxiella Burnetii which is carried by animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and kangaroos. The bacteria can also persist in dust and soil. Hand washing and wearing P2 masks can help reduce the risk of infection. Symptoms include fever and chills, severe sweats, severe headache, especially behind the eyes, muscle pain, weakness and tiredness, and weight loss. Person-to-person transmission is rare and the disease can be treated with antibiotics.

People must be screened and tested before they are vaccinated against Q fever. Cairns Tropical Public Health Services Public Health Medical Officer Dr Annie Preston-Thomas said there had been more cases than usual, possibly associated with greater numbers of wildlife, close to residential areas. “The bacteria that cause Q Fever can exist in a variety of domestic and wild animal species such as kangaroos and wallabies,” she said. “It can also persist in the general environment in dust and soil, which can lead to infection and disease. “If there are obvious animal droppings, please use a P2 mask

- available from hardware stores - to undertake jobs outdoors such as mowing the lawn. “Wash your hands after coming into contact with all animals or their faeces, especially before eating and drinking.” Dr Preston-Thomas said people whose work exposed them to animals, animal products, and animal waste were particularly at risk of developing Q Fever. This includes abattoir and meat workers, farmers, veterinarians, animal hunters, wildlife/ zoo workers, dog/cat breeders, and other people who work in animal industries. “There is an effective vaccine available to protect people against Q Fever,” Dr PrestonThomas said. “Vaccination is recommended for all people who are working in, or intend to work in, a high-risk occupation. “High risk workplaces should have a vaccination program to protect their workforce. “Most people make a full recovery from Q Fever, however in about 10-20 per cent of people, chronic fatigue is still present after 12 months, affecting a person’s ability to work at full capacity. “People may also develop chronic infections that affect the heart, bones, or joints.” Anyone experiencing symptoms of Q Fever is urged to contact their local GP, or phone 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84). People must be screened and tested before they are vaccinated against Q Fever. For more information and to check the Australian Q fever Register, head to www.qfever.org

New stage gives Mareeba the edge

THERE are three tenets of sound real estate value – position, position and position. The latest addition to The Edge, located at the south eastern side of Mareeba town is being prepared right now by Sibi Girgenti Holdings and represents sound and unparalleled opportunities for purchasers to establish their very own living space and lifestyle in a prestigious, quiet residential area, within a few minutes of Mareeba's CBD. Purchasers in the first stage of The Edge remain impressed with the unique, value added aspects of the Edge, from the established, well designed, tree lined approaches to the ever increasing value of their homes and land. With recent confirmation that in some areas of Mareeba there are no residential blocks on line until March or April next year, the release of Stage 2 of the prestigious The Edge residential represents excellent value and affordability and is available off the plan right now. While only two lots remaining in Stage 2a of The Edge are under contract, the new 14 residential blocks, soon to be released 2b stage

at The Edge range from 900 to just over 1000sq metres in area. Two of those are already under contract also. One of the many new attractions of this new release is that the benched, terraced arrangement of the level residential blocks, enables a selection of elevated panoramic views of the attractive bushland surrounds. The Edge is ideally located, only a few minutes walking distance from town, there are no major highways to cross to access either of the town's primary schools and is located south of the DPI complex in Peters Street. Intending purchasers who have sound residential real estate acumen will instantly realise that the arrangement and presentation of these new blocks is not available anywhere else in the Mareeba town area. The featured layout gives confirmation of the outstanding potential available for true never to be repeated purchasing opportunities in Mareeba's residential land on offer now and into the future. As Sibi Girgenti Holdings principal and well known developer Sibi Girgenti says, "Don't take our word for it,

call in and see for yourself and you will be truly amazed at the value and potential The Edge Stage 2b offers." Further details and inspection of the area can be ar-

ranged for you exclusively by contacting Sibi Girgenti Real Estate 231 Byrnes Street Mareeba or phone 4092 5566 or phone Sibi direct on 0407 969 328.

Barrel Racing clinic comes to Mareeba

The Mareeba Tennis Club hosted a social team tournament last Saturday called the Savannah Slam where teams from as far as Cooktown came to participate.

Tennis slam smashes into town

TENNIS players from across the region got the chance to unwind and participate in a new social competition hosted by the Mareeba Tennis Club last Saturday. The Savannah Slam tournament was hosted last Saturday and saw clubs from all around the region converging on Mareeba for the chance to play a team tournament.

Teams came from places like Cooktown, Innisfail and Clifton Beach to participate in this tournaments inaugural year. Savannah Slam Tournament Director Neale Searle was excited to bring the region a tournament when many other tennis events had been cancelled. “Everyone seems very pleased with the format that we

are using,” he said. “There is a level of competition but it’s a friendly competition. “The response has been really good.” Over the Saturday there were many teams from many different clubs that got the chance to play and compete against other tennis players. Mareeba Tennis Club

President Mark Keating was thrilled to have hosted the event at Mareeba and see all the teams that participated. “It’s just fantastic to get other clubs to come and participate at your club, it gives us a feel of how tennis is going in the region,” he said. “We can match our skills sets up against other clubs and it’s an opportunity for us to get rid of

our weekday worries. “People really love the format and they really love to come to Mareeba for the facilities that we have.” Although this event was one of the first of its kind being played tennis players can expect to see more regular events like the Savannah Slam to pop up at clubs across the region.

ON the weekend of August 29 and 30 one of Australia’s top horsewomen Leanne Caban came to Mareeba to pass on her rodeo and barrel racing skills. Twelve interested riders expanded their skills in horsemanship and racing at the ATOC Arena in Biboorah. Leanne Caban who is the 2010 and 2012 ATRA Barrel Racing Champion and former APRA Barrel Racing record holder said she hoped her weekend class ‘will give them the a completive edge in Barrel racing.’ Organiser Ann Lowis said “It was a great weekend with a great group of ladies and young girls and everyone benefited from Leanne’s knowledge in the industry.”

Eacham Junior Rugby League GRAND FINALS MALANDA SHOWGROUNDS - THIS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12

Junior grand finals RUGBY League fans will be able to see some local talent go head to head this Saturday with the grand finals of the Eacham Junior Rugby League being played at the Malanda Showground. After the decision was made earlier in the year to continue with the Eacham competition, the season had to be shortened with the removal of the regular breaks and no semi-finals. This allowed the season to be sped up and to better ensure that no kid missed out on a Saturday of local rugby league. Every grade will be playing on the day however only the U14 and U16 sides will be playing for the finals with 1 vs 2. Despite the circumstances the Eacham competition didn’t fall off drastically and they were able to get teams in every age group. Eacham JRL President Barry Dikes attributed this success to their proactive approach and overwhelming community support. “We made an early decision that we would continue in whatever capacity we could to give

the kids the opportunity to play some footy,” he said. “This decision was received extremely well by everyone and our numbers have stayed good. “What we did was that any child that came back and wanted to play, if their club didn’t have a team we would organise them to play for another team.” This approach ensured that any child that still wanted to play footy didn’t have to miss out on some quality Saturday games. Naomi Travers, Malanda JRL President said that her players have adjusted well to the new season and have really done well. “Our kids have handled it really well and they’ve been good with all the Covid restrictions and social distancing and everything,” she said. “It was really good to be able to see our sixteens play their final season as many of them will be moving on the seniors next season. “I think everyone is looking forward to the grand final day it’ll be a good day out.”

President of Ravenshoe JRL Craig Smith said although it was a shortened season it was great to get back and play some footy. “Our players have really enjoyed the 2020 competition and everyone has been very positive in working towards playing each weekend,” he said. “The format for the grand finals will be great as we have all clubs playing on the day.” Atherton JRL President Ben Fahlstrom is excited for Saturday and to see his teams put it all on the line for the finals. “We’ve got two Atherton sides in so we are happy about that,” he said. “The kids have been pretty positive and played some good footy. “It’s really been like any other year for them besides the rep pathways.” The finals are being held at the Malanda Showgrounds with kick off starting at 9am. Spectators are more than welcome to come and watch the end of the Eacham league season, social distancing must be observed.

$1.2 billion to rural clubs

AFTER conducting in-depth research with many of the grassroots sporting clubs around Australia the Australian Sports Foundation has announced its Active Kids Grants. After their survey discovered that Australia’s 70,000 community clubs need $1.2 billion in funding to survive the crippling effects of COVID-19, the grants were introduced. These grants will help eligible clubs acquire equipment, kit and uniforms for junior members and focus will be given to volunteer run grassroots community clubs with a priority towards disadvantaged or rural communities. Australian Sports Foundation CEO Patrick Walker believes that young players are the “bedrock” of any clubs future and that they need to be supported. “Young players have a massive impact on clubs, they are after all the bedrock of any clubs future,” he said. “Studies show that mental health problems are on the increase among young people and we know that sport plays a vital role in improving mental health and building resilience. “Through the physical activity itself and the community aspect of engaging with likeminded friends and peers mental health can improve.” To be eligible for funding the applicants must be volunteerrun and not affiliated with a professional club, be registered with the Australian Sports Foundation, be not for profit with an Australian Business Number, intend to spend the funds within 12 months of receiving them and be willing to provide updates on progress to the Sports Foundation. The grants are open until September 30 with up to $10,000 up for grabs; only one application per club will be accepted. To find out if your club is eligible visit http://sportsfoundation.org.au/ and click ‘apply now’ which will take you to the application for and eligibility guidelines.

Annuals success went to Style Line ridden by Stephen Wilson. Race 2 was the Maiden Plate which was won by Kensington Gold ridden by Krysten Swaffer with Amelia’s Rainbow ridden by Shohei Kaya following behind and Super Dancer ridden by Chelsea Jokic bringing up third. Race 3 was the Class B Handicap 1500m which went to Forgiato ridden by Bonnie Thomson by a major 3.8 margin lead ahead of Misprint ridden by Shohei Kaya who was followed by Newstead ridden by Krysten Swaffer. Race 4 was The Mareeba Cup and was narrowly won by Yankee Tango ridden by Pietro Romeo with Crocodile Shoes ridden by Kate Southam behind on a 0.1 margin while Arms Race Ridden by Krysten Swaffer sloted into third. The Bracelet Benchmark was the final race of the day and was won by Cool Attitude ridden by Bonnie Thomson in close competition with Dream I Can ridden by Shane Pawsey with Speed Eight ridden by Stephen Wilson coming in third.

RACEGOERS finally got the chance to enjoy a day at the races after the Mareeba Annuals were hosted on Saturday, making it one of the first races in the region this Spring. The day saw a crowd of 500 racegoers return to the Mareeba Turf Club to socialise off track and see live racing action on track, which for some was the first time in 2020. Mareeba Turf Club President Rex Petersen was happy with how the day turned out without any major issues. “The weather was perfect and we had a very smooth race day without any major issues,” he said. “We only had a capacity of 500 people and we normally get about 1,200 people out to a race day. “So we had to turn a lot of people away but we still had a good crowd that were excited to see some racing.” The Class B Handicap started off the day which was won by The Frontier ridden by Emily Class, Bold Expectations ridden by Chelsea Jokic was behind on a 1.0 margin while third place

Ladies gear up for cup The first ball of the Lacy Bra Cup will be bowled this weekend with the commencement of their third season and the ladies are laced up and ready to go. The competition is a chance for ladies to get together and interact all while having some good fun playing cricket. Some of the ladies involved have played representative cricket before, while for others it may be their first time holding a bat. Lacy Bra Cup Organiser Trisha Spry said that their focus this year is on those inexperienced players and giving them a chance to learn and enjoy a sport they have always wanted to play. “We are really focusing on new participants; people who have never played the sport before that just want to come and give it a go,” she said. “We will be utilising the tal-

is too serious.” This year the competition is aimed to be limited to a four team season with many regular COVID regulations in place and enforced.

Recently the ground which the Lacy Bra Cup is played on, Firth Park, has been the subject of many counts of vandalism including the tearing up of the grass with a stolen vehicle.

The Mareeba Cricket Club has been working tirelessly to acquire grants to put up barriers around the ground to stop vehicles making their way onto the field.

Boxers ready to rumble BOXING fans from all across the region will be able to get ringside this weekend to see some hail making action with one of the regions first nights. Brydes Boxing Gym is hosting Boxers at War 6 at the Mareeba Turf Club with boxers coming from all over Queensland from Home Hill all the way to Thursday Island. With a capacity of 500 at the Turf Club the night is expected to be a big one with nearly 20 fights scheduled including two title fights from Bryde’s Boxing Gym. Owner and Coach of Bryde’s Boxing Gym Wayne Bryde is very excited to get this night off the ground after their first one was cancelled earlier in the year. “It’s good to get these boys a fight because they’ve trained so hard and then for them to get shut off it mentally breaks them,” he said. “They’re physically fit, mentally prepared and ready to go.” Matthew Carrol is the main fight card for the night, an Australian Champion and is up for one of the belt fights on the night. “It should be a good fight I’m definitely keen and a little bit nervous,” he said. “I’m always really confident

when I jump in the ring and I get into the zone. “Just listen to what coach says in the corner he always brings me out with a win.” Xavier Richardson is the defending his current belt and title from his Home Hill contender.

“I’m known within Mareeba, Townsville, all the far north and I’m just going show them what boxing’s about,” he said. “I am feeling the best I’ve felt physically and mentally. “I can’t lose it in front of the home crowd, I have got to show

them what it’s all about.” The third fighter from Bryde’s Boxing Gym that will be fighting is Lachlan McWaters and this Saturday will mark his debut match. Hailing from Perth Lachlan has been in boxing gyms getting

ready for fights but could never step in the ring before he moved. “It should be a good fight I’m keen for a slugfest to be honest,” he said. “I’m not really nervous I’ve done a lot more training than anyone else really does for their

first fight after moving from Perth. “I’ve been raring to go for a while.” The fight night takes place this Saturday with the gates opening at 4.30pm with a 5pm start.

Bulls miss out BOXERS AT WAR 6 on clean sweep MAINBOUT BOXING

The Mareeba Bulls and Innisfail Cutters line up for the challenge on Saturday night.

THE Mareeba United Football Club played host to the Innisfail Cutters on Saturday night and were unlucky not to come away with a clean sweep across all divisions. On Friday night the men’s second division totally controlled the match against Edge Hill to win 4-0, and the Mareeba colts played out a 2-2 draw with South FC. In Saturdays matches the Premier Ladies won 3-0 while the reserves won 4-2 in a very entertaining match. Under the watchful eye of Coach Luciano Avolio the Mareeba Youth were determined to keep in touch with the ladder leaders and notched up a 3-0 win with Cummings, Burcombe and Sapkota the stand outs. The Men’s premier reserves produced the goods in a nail biter with the Bulls getting the

better of the Cutters with a hard fought 3-2 win to keep them at the top end of the ladder. Coach Dennis Allen said, “We stepped up the tempo this week at training, we lost to Innisfail in the last round and we weren’t going to lose at home, the boys put in a great effort.” The Premier Bulls had also lost to the Cutters in the previous round and were looking to make amends. Innisfail Coach, former Dimbulah farmer Hayden Darveniza said, “We were hoping to come here and get three points, but the Bulls are a different prospect playing at home, were happy to get one point but it’s not what we came for,” he said. “We were missing a player tonight and our shape was out a bit tonight and they played with spirit but we will take the point.”

PAGE 43 The Express, Wednesday, September 9, 2020

On the other hand Bulls Coach Ang Tatti was disappointed by the result. “I thought we did enough to win the game we had some decisions go against us especially that blatant hand ball towards the end,” he said. “We had lots of other opportunities which we didn’t put away, again we were lacking in front of goal, but a point is a point and it keeps us in the top four. “It was a much different game to the previous round when the Cutters completely dominated us, but after a few games under our belts the boys are starting to hit their straps, It’s a good sign.” This weekend the Bulls travel to Leichardt for the fourth verses second clash and are hoping their recent run of form will continue.
