New COVID-19 restrictions in place for Queensland

came into effect immediately and mainly target private in home gatherings. The restrictions differ between the South-East corner and the rest of the

Businesses and facilities that have a COVIDsafe plan in place are not affected by the new restrictions. Businesses still need to comply with restric-

Second chance wanted
The
AFTER time spent in jail and taking drugs, a young father with four children in his care is now looking for a second chance after turning his life around. In January of this year Matt Lewis registered with Mareeba Community Housing Company (MCHC) seeking accommodation for himself and his young family. Matt has one son Kayden who is 18 months old, and his ex-partner has three boys. His ex has now been incarnated and Matt has decided to take on her three boys as well. Before contacting MCHC Matt was staying in a one bedroom carport with his partner and their four boys, but after a few months MCHC found a three bedroom apartment for the family that was upstairs and with no backyard. With four boys aged 11, 7, 5 and 18 months they all wake up and stomp around the house and jump out of their beds. Matt is now coming to the end of his lease and is now looking for a house with a yard and a house that won’t keep people awake downstairs. Mathew said he is up to date with his rent and hasn’t had any problems with his landlord but he does have tattoos and has been in jail but he is now looking for a second chance. “People look at me and my tattoos and I get labelled as a criminal, I also have a lack of tenancy history due to my lifestyle,” he said. “When a real estate agent asks me where I have been liv-

ing for the past few years, telling them I’ve been in prison the answer is an instant no.” Mathew admits that he has had a rough start to life, but since the birth of his son and taking care of three other boys has changed him. “Kayden has ensured my ongoing sobriety; he is my reason to get up every day and my reason to try,” he said.
“Bringing up my son plus three other boys is hectic, my ex’s parents are in NSW and they are not well, and with all the COVID restrictions it meant the three boys would have gone into foster care. “I need to be able to look at myself in the mirror and my son in the eye and I can’t in good conscience see the boys go into foster care while I am in a posi-
tion to take care of them.” Matthew said he is now looking for a second chance and an affordable three bedroom house with a yard so that he can take care of the four boys. “I just want people to not be so quick to judge people on their appearance or past. People do change, people do learn from their mistakes.”

New RSL finally set to open BY PHIL BRANDEL
AFTER two years of waiting, the Atherton RSL Club is finally ready to open its doors, but a sense of mystery is still shrouding the beleaguered Club. The RSL announced on its Facebook page that they would finally be able to throw open the doors to the public on Monday, September 7, along with its new restaurant. When asked for more details or comments about staff and the opening Current President of the club Seamus (Sean) Carroll told the Express “that we can’t allow any photos inside until we
are open and I am not going to make any comment until I have spoken to the board.” The original Atherton RSL Club in Main Street closed in July 2008 due to financial hardship; the premises were then sold in August 2009. Construction on the new building started in 2018 and was meant to be finished by ANZAC Day 2019. The club remained closed in early 2020 due to NBN problems and then COVID, which meant the club couldn’t open for ANZAC day 2020. According to RSL QLD’s webpage, “After three years of
submitting applications the Sub Branch was finally successful in obtaining a grant from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund.” “The grant was provided on a dollar-for-dollar basis to
match what the Sub Branch has saved, along with some revenue received from the sale of the old RSL building by RSL Queensland in 2008.” Back in January of this year The Express reported that the
club was having trouble opening in time for Anzac Day due to internal troubles and at the time we were told “no comment” or “we can’t answer that sorry.” The new club features a small bistro, an outdoor chil-
dren’s play area, an undercover area for eating as well as an office for the sub-branch. The Express made several approaches for an official comment with no reply received by print deadline.
New home for local music lovers A MUSIC group that encourages people with a disability to get up on stage and jam with a house band has moved into their new home. Thrive at the Grand is an offshoot of Tablelands Music Lovers (TML). Ann Lowis is the event coordinator for TML and started
Thrive in Febuary 2017 when her son was still in high school after she found it hard to find activities for children with disabilities to do after school. “I was looking for something where my son could socialise and be part of the community,” Ms Lowis said. “So I approached Table-
lands music lovers, and they were 1000 per cent behind the idea.” Since starting Thrive, Ann said they have had numerous events and theme nights like Christmas, Easter and St Patrick’s Day. “We have a house band and it’s open to anyone with a dis-

ability, they can sing, play an instrument, and have some social interaction,” she said. Originally Thrive started as part of TML at the old Atherton RSL, but last week they started in their new venue in the Grand Hotel in Atherton. Now every Thursday they meet with volunteer musicians who donate
their time to play and jam with participants. Ann said all the local musicians are happy to donate their time. “We found that when we have the house band backing them it works a lot better, it’s much better than just putting them on a silent stage, so now

The Re-gen Round-Up WITH SALLY FIELDS Biological Agronomist at Natural Fields Solutions
The Collins dictionary definition for the noun Nepotism is: the unfair use of power in order to get jobs or other benefits for your family or friends. Does Nepotism exist in Natural Systems? Nepotism to get your progeny up to speed is an ecological advantage. We see this most profoundly in mammals – some examples are humans, monkeys, cows, sheep, and dolphins. In social creatures such as bees, termites, ants and some spiders – neo Darwinian scholars agree that nepotism significantly affects the behaviours of social organisms. However, in a forest – a dying tree will give the last of its energy to its saplings to push them up into the space that is created by the death of the parent tree. Nepotism, or purely an evolutionary act – survival of the fittest? “Evolution does not have a purpose. It is a self-organising system using the principles of chemistry and physics. There is a point where nepotism may cease to be an evolutionary advantage, and the flow on effect may have negative consequences for symbiosis.” - Ray Dunstan In Regenerative Agriculture – often when we begin, the soil is actually just dirt. Void of life, with the soil microbiome long since been rendered unnecessary. There was a purpose for this, a system void of life requires human systems to keep it in production. Life support systems become 100% necessary – and we see many examples in farming where the dirt is used as the medium for a hydroponic farming model. A system that requires large amounts of inputs – over or under doing fertiliser applications which create a nutritional imbalance. The pests and diseases are nature’s clean-up crew, they come in and recycle any sick plants. However, that is when our human models bring out the ‘cides’ (latin for to kill) to deal with these pests and diseases. A highly lucrative business model. Luckily for us, these millions of years old systems have a strong desire to be healthy. A slow introduction of a change of inputs that build soil and reduce the dependence for a chemical system, over time we see the soil microbiome bounce back to life. Mycorrhizal fungi is the underground ‘world wide web’, attaching to the roots of the plants in a business deal where they receive sugars from the plant’s roots, in exchange, they feed the plant nutrients from much further afield than the plant could access on its own. This natural system, along with bacteria nematodes earthworms Protozoa and arthropods - work together to feed the plants, giving them the nutrients and water that they need to thrive. The plants, in turn pass on these nutritional benefits to the animals and humans that depend on them – the natural fertiliser to nutrient dense food feedback system. Nepotism, no. Symbiosis - most definitely! As humans, we are not separate from nature – we are part of it. If we take a step back and observe nature’s systems, embracing their teachings, we may just be in with a running chance. Cheers Sally “In nature there are neither rewards nor punishments; there are consequences.” - Robert Green Ingersoll
Vietnam Vets remembered JUST days after VP Day commemorations took place across the Tablelands, Vietnam Veterans Day was observed with a special ceremony taking place at the Mareeba Cenotaph on Tuesday, August 18. The Vietnam War was Australia's longest military engagement of the 20th Century with the arrival of the Australian Army Training Team in South Vietnam in July 1962 marking the start of Australia’s involvement in the war. By the time the war had come to an end, almost 60,000 Australians had served between 1962 and 1972 with 521 of them being killed and 3000 wounded. August 18 is the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966 where the men of Delta Company, 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, faced a force of some 2000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops. The battle was fought in wet and muddy conditions during a heavy tropical downpour. By the end of the day, 17 Australians had been killed in action and 25 were wounded, one of whom died a few days later. This was the largest number of casualties in a single operation since the Australian Task Force had established its base at nearby Nui Dat the previous April. Ross Cuzzubbo President of
Ross Cuzzubbo, President of the Mareeba RSL Sub Branch with Bugler Luke Rantucci at Tuesday’s Vietnam Veterans Day commemorations in Mareeba.
the Mareeba RSL Sub Branch said that remembering the Vietnam War was important. “The day is important because we need to keep our history alive and Vietnam was an important part of that,” he said. “We know that some people were against it at the time, and
that’s ok. “But over 500 hundred soldiers died in the Vietnam War so it’s very important that it’s kept alive.” Mr Cuzzubbo said that when the Vietnam Veterans returned to Australia they received a poor reception.
“The reception for the men and women when they came home was pretty poor so this is an important day to make amends,” he said. “We will keep doing it (Vietnam Veterans Day) to make amends and to remember.”
Fallen soldier honoured
AFTER months of waiting a fallen Tablelands soldier has finally had his sacrifice recognised after the name J.P Feely was added to the Mareeba Cenotaph. The mistake on the Mareeba Cenotaph was brought to the attention of Mareeba Shire Council in April of this year after local historic researcher Elwyn Troughton discovered that the name J.B Effley was incorrect. J.P Feely was the first casualty of the Second World War from the Tablelands and now his sacrifice will be properly honoured. A statement from Council released to The Express stated, “For now, the name JB Effley will remain on the cenotaph as it’s not possible to remove the etched name from the marble without replacing the entire panel of the cenotaph.”
Mareeba historic researcher Elwyn Troughton points out the new name on the Mareeba Cenotaph on Byrnes Street.

One Nation gets behind “The beaver” ground for a long time and now it is time to step up to the challenge. “My ambition is to help people who do not have a voice.” Neal, whose nickname stems from her early years with the Brophy boxing troupe said she is “in it to win it”. She said her work in Indigenous communities had taught her that some people in Australia simply had no voice, and she wanted to change that. “I suppose I only really finally made my mind up to do this about two weeks ago,” she said. “And what pushed me over the line was the idea that I could give a voice to people
who have none. “If you are just a little person in this country you have no voice, and that happens whether you are in the youth justice system or in a domestic violence situation, or whatever your circumstances.” Neal said she won’t be seen in the boxing ring for the next few months but is proud of her accomplishments, including winning about 200 fights, as well as her ability to pass on her skills to others as an instructor. “For me it is not about the violence – it’s about the discipline and the training and the health aspects, and also knowing you can protect yourself from attack.”

Sandy Brown from Tablelands Animal Rescue chats with Member for Cook Cynthia Lui at her mobile office in Mareeba last week.
MEMBER for Cook Cynthia Lui dropped into Mareeba last week for one of her monthly mobile office meetings. Ms Lui sets up her mobile office out front of the Mareeba IGA to give local residents a chance to chat with their local member. Ms Lui said that constituents had been approaching her with a number of issues. “We have been talking about a wide range of issues, including COVID, jobs and financial support,” she said. “The advantage of having a mobile office is having those off the cuff conversations with everyone. “Over the past six months everyone right across the Cook
electorate wants to talk about COVID, Cook is a vast electorate and doing mobile offices is really important.” Ms Lui said that keeping the border closed was an important issue currently facing Queensland communities. “Queensland has done really well; we have kept the numbers down, especially compared to Victoria and NSW,” Ms Lui said. “We need to celebrate what we have achieved but these hard measures need to be kept in place to keep Queenslanders safe.” Another issue facing Cook at the moment was the increase in youth crime, something that Ms Lui tried to address with a round

table meeting at the beginning of the year. “The meeting was to identify the stakeholders involved and the people who are receiving funding to establish our network,” she said. “We identified that there’s not enough recreation facilities for kids. Since the meeting I have had a lot of conversations to see how we can better facilitate that process. “I’ve had conversations with the PCYC; I’ve also had conversations with the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and the Council about security cameras to increase safety for all residents. “Things just don’t happen overnight.”

pleted last week with stage 2 set to commence soon and be completed by late 2020. The sealing works are funded under a $237.5 million partnership between the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Roads of Strategic Importance Initiative. Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch said sealing the PDR would minimise closures due to flooding, improve transport efficiency, and reduce maintenance costs. “The PDR has low reliability with extended and multiple road closures and periods of load restrictions each year due to flooding,” he said. “Unsealed sections generally have substandard drainage and low levels of immunity at waterway crossings. “When community access roads are closed or subject to load restrictions, road freight stops and has to be replaced by other transport means which can be many times more expensive.”
AT last week’s ordinary council meeting the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) voted unanimously that their Biosecurity Plan 2020-2025 would be put out for public consultation. The plan has been developed to fulfil Council's statutory obligations under the Biosecurity Act 2014. In order to meet this requirement, Council must adopt the Plan after public consultation. The new proposed plan will replace the previous Mareeba Shire Local Area Pest Management Plan and includes significant changes regarding the management of invasive plants and animals. One change that it doesn’t address is the ongoing problem of Amazonian Frogbit choking up the Shire’s waterways. During the meeting, Deputy Mayor Kevin Davies raised the issue of why Frogbit was not included as a noxious weed. “It is in the report but it is just not recognised as a noxious weed, the state government
haven’t declared it as a noxious weed which it should be, Atherton creek is choked and we have been fighting hard to try and get it eradicated,” he said. “The creek is not ours but we have been trying to get something done, it’s also in the Granite.” In June of this year The Express reported on the ongoing problem of Frogbit in Atherton Creek after locals Margie Bestmann and Robert Reid complained to several government departments about the ongoing problem. Mr Reid said “We sent letters to the Member for Cook Cynthia Lui who then forwarded our letter to The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries who then responded via a third party.” “I’ve sent a letter to Sunwater who said it wasn’t their problem and Terrain NRM said the same thing,” he said. “This weed is banned in NSW and WA, they need to ban it here and eradicate it from our creeks.”
Margie Bestmann also approached Cynthia Lui’s office hoping to show her the problem in person. “I haven’t had any further contact from her office to date,” said Ms Bestmann. “I had a phone call from Biosecurity Queensland who are sympathetic to the cause but said it was pointless banning it state by state as people could still buy it online from interstate.” “Their objective is to add it to the national list of banned species.” A MSC Spokesperson said “Council has written to various relevant State and Federal Ministers, including Minister for Agriculture The Hon. Mark Furner MP. Council will continue to lobby the Governments to declare Frogbit as an invasive plant.” To download the Biosecurity Plan 2020-2025 go to www.msc. qld.gov.au/draft-biosecurityplan

Schools unite for 2020 year 12 students
BY RHYS THOMAS
MAREEBA’S secondary schools have joined forces to give the 2020 year 12 students the best possible formal experience, with a key message for the public. It’s all about the seniors and both Mareeba State High School (MSHS) and St Stephen’s Catholic College (SSCC) are presenting a united front with their year 12 formals as they urge members of the public not to attend their events. After a very trying year, the graduating class of 2020 has fortunately been allowed to proceed with their formals, but under very strict guidelines and procedures. To allow members of the public to still experience the formals from a distance, the schools have decided to livestream their events and publish photos in print and online. Parents are still invited to attend the walk-in, however they are not allowed into the venue due to COVID-19 restrictions. Kerry Manders, SSCC Principal doesn’t want to rob the public of the formal and is doing all she can for the students and the public in the form of a “keepsake.” “Parents will still be able to see the arrivals and for the members of the community we will be publishing our keepsake in The
Express the week after,” she said. “Our preferred option is always to have a community event, however in COVID times we cannot do that, so we have decided to try and provide the event at a distance. “We would like to say thank you to the community for supporting us in having an event that is COVID-safe, protects the community and is successful for our students.” Mrs Manders comments were echoed by MSHS Principal Scott Whybird with their formal being held two weeks after St Stephen’s. “Like Mrs Manders said it’s about giving everyone the best opportunities and at the moment St Stephen’s are the trailblazers,” Mr Whybird said. “I hope the St Stephen’s formal is really successful and I hope ours is too. “This is going to give people a keepsake, an opportunity to feel part of it, something they will be able to keep and always have.” The SSCC formal is on this weekend, Saturday August 29 while MSHS’s formal is on Saturday, September 12. For full pictorial coverage of the upcoming formals make sure you pick up a copy of The Express.

Councils look for new marketing partner BOTH the Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) and the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) have decided to discontinue using Tourism Atherton Tablelands (TAT) for tourism and destination marketing and instead have decided to put the role out to tender. In July of this year Tourism Tropical Tablelands (TTT) rebranded with a new name (Tourism Atherton Tablelands) and also a new logo. TTT started about 34 years ago with the support of both the local councils. Both councils had been funding TAT to the tune of $25,000 per council per year. According to TRC Mayor Rod Marti the new Council has decided to go to market for tourism marketing. “It’s important that Council looks at new ways, just because it’s been done one way for a long time doesn’t mean that’s the only way,” he said. “TRC and MSC have made this decision together.”
MSC Mayor Angela Toppin agreed that it was time to refresh and consider all market options. “The TRC and MSC are looking at tourism very closely and we appreciate the work that TAT has done,” she said. “Tourism Atherton Tablelands (TAT) has been marketing the region on behalf of Mareeba Shire Council and Tablelands Regional Council for many years. “Both Councils decided to review the marketing strategy for the region and have called for expressions of interest for suitably qualified agencies to develop and implement a threeyear destination marketing proposal to attract visitors to their areas.” Eddie Nye Chair of Tourism Atherton Tablelands said that the decision was a little disappointing. “TAT is the strongest organisation for the job, we are membership based organisation and we have over 34 years’ ex-
perience in marketing the Tablelands,” he said. “We also have digital assets that are incredible and we have a strong group supporting us. “With the change of councils they felt that this was the best thing to do, regardless of the outcome TAT will continue to market the destination and advocate for our members.” Mr Nye said that TAT was given about 6 weeks’ notice that the funding from the councils was coming to an end. “Both councils felt like doing something different and seeing who is out there but I believe that the organisation best placed for the job is TAT.” “We will be applying for both tenders and we will be putting our best foot forward.” It’s believed that interested parties can tender for one or both council areas to market. Tenders will be assessed, and a recommendation will then be made to both councils for consideration.

Johnston water transfer back on drawing board
WATER: Hill MP Shane Knuth with KAP Candidate for Cook Tanika Parker and KAP Leader Robbie Katter inspecting the water supply in Walkamin.
A LONG held plan to transfer water from the North Johnstone River to the Barron River and then into Tinaroo Dam is being spoken of again, nearly 50 years after the idea was first mooted. Hill MP Shane Knuth said that over the years, there had been massive horticulture expansions on the Tablelands. “When Tinaroo Dam was first constructed plans were put in place for the North Johnstone Transfer to give the region another water source once it had out grown the dams capacity,” Mr Knuth said. “That time is now. Farmers are screaming for more water. “The project would transfer water via a pipeline from the upper North Johnstone River into the Barron River and then into Tinaroo Dam. “Water would be harvested only during flooding and provide a much-needed boost to farmers.”
Mr Knuth pointed out that having an extra water source, other than Tinaroo Dam, would also benefit recreational users. “We have seen in the past when the dam gets down to 30 per cent that recreational users, farmers and the community are all affected,” he said. In parliament on Wednesday, August 18 Mr Knuth asked Minister for Natural Resources Anthony Lynham if the Government would commit to the construction of the North Johnstone Transfer. Mr Lynham agreed there was a demand for more water in the region and Sunwater was considering the viability of the project. “Like with any water in this state, the water from the North Johnstone diversion must be provided at the right price for farmers,” Dr Lynham said. “Farmers have to have the right price to be able to afford to
convert this water to economic production. “The department and Sunwater are rightfully considering the potential viability of the North Johnstone diversion. “The North Johnstone diversion is under investigation now by the department to make sure that it does stack up. “Robust assessments have to be undertaken based on cost and the amount of water and with the North Johnstone diversion in particular, that is where preliminary investigations have to be done on hydrology to make sure there is enough water to go across into the Tablelands.” FNQ Growers President Joe Moro said it was exciting news. “The transfer is a great idea,” Mr Moro said. “We need something to be done because it is really the only viable option we have for horticulture needs.”
Horse owners offer reward The owners of a registered Quarter Horse stallion who was shot dead at Mt Surprise in July have offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to a conviction. The Wolf of Wall Street, was in a paddock close to the Burlington Station homestead with four mares when he was shot through the lungs sometime between 8pm on Tuesday, June 16 and 3.30pm on Thursday, June 18. Detectives from Major Organised Crime Squad Rural have been investigating the shooting and have called for witnesses. The owners of the stallion, Ray Heslin and Kelli Thomas have decided to offer a sizeable reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. They purchased him for $65,000 at the 2015 Landmark
Classic sale at Tamworth and say he was worth $150,000 to them but more than that, he was one of the family. “We could have sold him many times,” Ms Thomas said. “He was a pure gentleman, easy to have around and easy to ride. “It's a pretty lowlife act to shoot an innocent animal - the person might as well have shot someone in our family. “We just want justice for that.” The Wolf of Wall Street and the four mares he was with were in the property's paddock that fronts the public road between Mt Surprise and Chillagoe, 53km from Mt Surprise. Ms Thomas said they had been checking on the horses every day, except the day before they found the stallion dead,
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
when they’d gone to Atherton for supplies. She believes the shooting was deliberate, as none of the other horses in the paddock were targeted, and she said it was very unlikely to have been an accident. “Roo shooters, pig hunters they know what they’re looking at," she said. "He had a clipped mane, a shiny coat, branded he was a magnificent animal, a long way from looking like a brumby.” Ms Thomas also said they didn't have the stallion insured. Police are urging anyone with information in relation to the offence to contact Policelink and use the online suspicious activity form, quoting QP2001269328. Information can also be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers 24 hours a day.

Rapid Building Approvals launched
BEING born and raised in Mareeba, Ryan Bird has a passion for customer service and through his new business Rapid Building Approvals, he provides building approvals for all residential projects within record time at an affordable price. With a strong business background in Mareeba, Ryan has broken away from under the shadow of his family’s business HEH Civil and started his own venture. Starting his career within local government, Ryan identified that customer service was lacking in the construction industry, and wanted to change the entire experience for all customers when seeking building approvals. “The more I spoke with builders, architects and engineers, I realised it was be-
coming the norm for building certification to take anywhere between 1 to 2 weeks,” he said. “Once we perfected our processes, and started issuing our approvals within 24 hours. “Word spread quite quickly and our company grew significantly with builders realising the money they can save by starting their projects sooner.” Recently the building surveying industry as a whole was shaken by the sudden rise in insurance premiums, however with Rapid focusing solely on residential approvals, they have been fortunate to have a significantly cheaper annual PI insurance premium, enabling them to pass these savings on to their clients. Rapid certify building ap-
provals that range from small home renovations all the way to new dwellings, sheds, carports, swimming pools and the like. Ryan is urging people to “experience the difference” when it comes to their next building project, ensuring clients will not be disappointed with their service. “The building process for anyone can be daunting and it’s our priority that our clients are kept up to date regularly,” he said. “It’s the simply things like returning phone calls instantly, replying to emails promptly that our clients appreciate.” Since opening in May, Rapid have issued over 400 new building approvals with incredible feedback from their clients, covering all around the Mareeba/Tablelands and Cairns areas. With a passion to grow awareness of the industry, Ryan takes the time to speak with school graduates about the profession, stating that the industry is indeed an ageing one and he wants to see the next generation of building surveyors coming through. With their 24hr turnaround, super friendly staff and an unbeatable service, Rapid is your one stop shop to cut the queue for building approvals.
Artists in the zone
EXHIBITION: Jan Sargent with some of her in the zone photos from her new exhibition.
WHEN Jan Sargent took her first photo with her box brownie more than 50 years ago, there was no way she could have predicted she would have her own photographic exhibition many years later. Jan’s photographic exhibition, “In the Zone’ opened on Tuesday, August 25. It is also the first exhibition in the newly reopened Post Office Gallery. The exhibition features portraits of Far North Queensland artists working on their art while Jan takes a candid photo of them in the zone. Originally the exhibition was meant to open last year, but due to flood and storm damage at the regional gallery the exhibition was put on hold. Then due to a back log of
artists waiting to be exhibited at the regional gallery, the exhibition was moved to the Old Post Office Gallery. In April of this year the exhibition was delayed again due to COVID and was then delayed several more times due to COVID and the gallery being renovated. On Monday August 24, Jan started hanging her photos in the Old Post Office Gallery in anticipation of the opening. Jan said that she prefers to take photos of people when they least expect it. “I have always had a preference for capturing unguarded moments rather than a posed subject. Now I specialize in candid portraits, shooting when the individual is engrossed in
some absorbing activity, unaware of the camera,” she said. “The title ‘In the Zone’ refers to that mind-space in which one is totally absorbed, oblivious to surroundings. “The exhibition is a collection of photographic portraits of local artists candidly captured in the act of their creative process.” 41 portraits will be on display from August 25 to September 29 at the Old Post Office gallery, Herberton Road, Atherton. Jan will be in-residence every Saturday, from 10am to 2pm to answer questions about her photography and her subjects. All photos are available to purchase.

EAT FRESH: Year 12 Science in Practice students Lilly-Maree Brasier, Tracy Martens, Robby Soncin and Abi Vickary with the fresh produce they pick that goes straight into the schools tuckshop.
Fresh is best at Mareeba High BY RHYS THOMAS
STUDENTS at Mareeba State High School (MSHS) consume some of the freshest food in the state with produce from their very own garden grown on the school grounds and harvested 30
minutes before lunch. As part of their assessment the Year 12 Science in Practice class has been growing and maintaining a commercial garden with produce including fresh lettuce, tomatoes, parsley and snow peas all going into the schools salads.
The students plan their gardens according to the tuckshops demand for produce and which vegetables would yield the most in the climate at any given time of the year. MSHS Head of Department for Science Jason Richardson is
Be road safe
MEMBERS of the community are encouraged to be mindful of their behaviour behind the wheel during the 2020 Queensland Road Safety Week, running this week from August 24 to 28. This year, drivers are invited to sign up road safety online. So what does this mean? Queenslanders are encouraged to display road safety messages on available signage and submit it to the StreetSmarts website where they will be displayed throughout the week. This year, Queenslanders are being asked to sign up for road safety and put up a sign sharing important road safety messages. How to get involved: 1. Think of a road safety message to share with your community 2. Create a sign displaying that message – use an existing sign or message board, or create your own on a poster, cardboard or whatever is available 3. Take a photo of your sign and share it on the StreetSmarts website as well as in a shop window etc. Officers from the Road Policing unit will also be out and about throughout the week conducting high visibility mobile and static enforcement activities focusing on drivers committing Fatal Five-related and dangerous driving offences. Drink driving: If you plan to drink, plan to get home safe. Organise a lift – designate a driver, or catch a taxi, rideshare or public transport. Stay at a mate's place. Remember, you can still
excited to see the theory that he teaches in the classroom transferred into the garden. “We’ve done all the theory behind how plants grow and now we’ve put it all into practice,” he said. “Mareeba has such an im-
portant horticulture area so it’s a really good step into seeing the sorts of careers they could get into. “There is a lot of demand for skilled labour in the horticulture industry and I’m hoping that this will be a gateway for the stu-
dents to get into further training or study.” Mr Richardson has plans for the schools commercial garden to play a much larger role in students learning after the program went by the wayside three years ago.

The simple answer to this question is – yes. Generally any property that is acquired after separation and before a final property settlement will be included as an asset in the property pool available for distribution, even if the asset is held in only one party’s name. Liabilities incurred after separation may also be included in the property pool, depending on the how the liability has been incurred and why. A classic example is found in a recent case, involving an inheritance received by the husband of $715,000.00 from his late brother’s estate. Even though the inheritance arose after separation, it was included in the property pool to be divided between the parties. In this case the parties had separated almost five years prior to the husband receiving the inheritance, however the husband and wife had not applied for a divorce nor finalised their property settlement at the time the inheritance was received. The court decided to include the inheritance in the property pool, which resulted in the wife receiving a share of the husband’s inheritance. This case serves as a warning that just because assets are acquired after separation does not mean that they are immune from the property settlement process. It is not uncommon for us to speak to clients who have acquired significant assets or liabilities after separation. A common example is the purchase of a new home. Where the acquisition of a new asset is with another third party, this adds an additional layer of complexity to the property settlement process. We recommend that parties seek legal advice early after separation, and where possible, seek to formalise their property settlement as soon as they can to prevent situations like the above from arising. Contact our Cairns and Mareeba family lawyers today to obtain strategic legal advice on your family law property settlement.

OPINION
With Phil Brandel @Philbrandel1
THE seat of Cook now has 5 confirmed candidates from various parties running against the Labor incumbent, whereas in the seat of Hill we are still waiting to hear about a single candidate from any party who will put their hand up and run against Shane Knuth. A One Nation staffer told me confidentially that they weren’t even going to bother running a candidate in Hill. In the seat of Cook it seems like everyone wants to have a crack. Could this be because they sense there is change in the air? Several readers have pointed out to me that they have seen more from the current member of Cook in the last 8 weeks than they have in the last 8 months. As for Mr Knuth I seem to run into him everywhere, I’ve personally seen him at the Mission Beach markets, the Atherton pop up show and the Yungaburra markets.
Blood in the water
Could the sudden interest from the current member of Cook be due to the state election in 6 weeks’ time? Expect to see a lot of Labor ministers and senators who have never had any interest in FNQ to suddenly start popping up in Cook, shaking hands and kissing babies. Where have these sycophants been for the past 3 years? 2020 has truly been a year without precedence, with pandemics, record unemployment and border closures. During this year of all years we have needed and wanted leadership, but some politicians have been found wanting. Ipsos is a Market research company in South Australia and in a poll they ran in late 2018 they found that most Australians think political parties are doing a poor job of creating policy in Australia’s long term interests, producing capable leaders and stable government, and communicating how
they will solve issues important to voters. More than half of Australian voters surveyed (53 per cent) said they believe political parties are bad at producing politicians capable of running the country. The reason Australia has not had any significant reform over the past few decades is due to weak politicians who have wanted to be liked before they would instigate any form of reform. We want politicians who are not afraid to buck the party line and who are not interested in focus groups. Can any party or individual be serious about Hill if they start nominating candidates this late in the game? But expect more candidates to put their hand up for Cook in the coming weeks as opportunists sense the blood in the water.

READY TO RACE: Pigeon breeder Les Thompson with one of his prizewinning pigeons that will be racing next weekend in the Great Blue Pigeon Race, a fundraiser for Moyamoya Australia.

A NEW and unique fundraiser is set to take flight across the Far North next weekend. The Great Blue Pigeon Race is happening on Saturday, September 5 with the aim of raising funds for Moyamoya Australia – a rare, progressive cerebrovascular disorder that mainly affects children. Locals can buy a pigeon for $20 each and if your pigeon is back first, you win $200. The pigeons will take off from Babinda and land in Cairns about 30 minutes later. Nicola Baker from Ravenshoe is the founder of the Moyamoya Australia Charity and has experienced the hardship of the disease first-hand, with her 16-year-old son, Jed currently
living with the disease. Jed had a stroke when he was only eleven months old, but was not diagnosed with the disease until he was four years old. Nicola said that the pigeon race is a fun way of raising funds for Moyamoya Australia charity, which aims to raise awareness of the diseases and help families out financially who have been affected directly by Moyamoya. The idea for the race came from Nicola’s “adopted Irish uncle Les Thompson” who called Nicola one day with the idea of having a pigeon race. “Originally he said would like to race his 35 birds as a fundraiser,” Nicola said. “I thought about turning this into a sweepstakes so that I could
sell more than 35 birds, now we have sold over 250 birds. “As soon as we went live we just started selling pigeons left, right and centre we have even sold pigeons to people living overseas.” Nicola said that when people buy a pigeon they also get to name it. “So far we have had some fun names like Birdy McBirdface, Glen, and Doomagina,” she said. “It’s all a bit of fun, the money goes to a good cause and we will be broadcasting the race live from our Faceook page.” For more information go to wwwfundraiser.moyamoyaaustralia.org.au

FORD recently announced a new connected vehicle smartphone app that will help small business customers and Ford motor vehicle owners maximise efficiency, security and productivity. FordPass Pro is a dedicated new app for those who rely on their vehicles for their work, enabling them to manage up to five Ford vehicles from a single screen. “Time is precious for small business owners, which is why we focus on delivering simple technology solutions that we know will make a big difference,” said Richard Bunn, FordPass director, Ford Mobility Europe. “The new FordPass Pro app will help our customers spend less time managing their vehicles and more time making their business a success.”
The FordPass Pro app provides the tools businesses need to manage up to five vehicles within a single intuitive interface. Features include: • Check In on the home screen for dynamic, instant access to important information about each vehicle – for example displaying AdBlue levels so owners know when to refill. • Vehicle Location lets owners know where their vehicles are at the beginning or end of the day, and helps drivers find their vans in busy car parks or work locations. • Remote Lock/Unlock provides reassurance that vehicles and their contents are safe, enabling independent security for both the cabin and load compartment. • Vehicle Health offers visibility of key vehicle health indi-
cators including fuel levels, oil life, and tyre pressure, helping owners reduce wear and tear and improve fuel economy. • Alarm Notification immediately lets owners know if any of their vehicles’ alarms have been triggered. • Remote Start on automatic vehicles lets owners remotely start the engine. New features and enhancements are being added to FordPass Pro regularly. Some upcoming features include a heightened security Guard Mode which will allow owners of vehicles equipped with the FordPass Connect on-board modem to be alerted about any activity in their van – including if they are unlocked with a key – providing an additional layer of security and confidence. Online Service Booking will help own-
ers to proactively manage the maintenance of their vehicles. The FordPass Pro app is compatible with Apple and Android smartphones and is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play store in Australia. FordPass Pro will support independent and small business customers, while large fleet customers will continue to be supported with Telematics and Data Services from Ford Commercial Solutions. Compatible FordPass vehicles are now available at Hansen Ford Mareeba. Talk to Graeme and the team about a demonstration as to the convenience of FordPass all from your smartphone. Visit Hansen Ford on Byrnes Street, Mareeba or phone 4092 9400.

ON ROAD the
Tips before your trip IT’S never been a better time to pack up your vehicle and head out on an off-road adventure to experience all Queensland has to offer. Before you set out on your trip, here is a handy threestep guide, courtesy of NQ Off Road Specialists in Mareeba, to ensure your vehicle is ready to take on all our Australian terrain has to offer. Cameron, Bob and the Team at NQ Off Road Specialists are the experts in Mechanical Services, 4WD maintenance, accessories and much more. STEP 1. THE ENGINE First things first, bring your vehicle in for a check over and a service. We make sure the engine is running smoothly, the brakes are strong and the suspension is ready to handle any rough terrain. You will find the stock standard sus-
pension isn’t always strong enough to withstand the outback you’re planning to travel on. We can upgrade your vehicle with an aftermarket Ironman 4x4 Suspension Kit, which are Australian engineered and designed to handle our country. STEP 2. THE WHEELS Ensuring you have fresh tyres with plenty of tread and the right tyre pressure is important when travelling. As 9 times out of 10 you are towing or carrying some heavy equipment on board, and there is nothing worse than having your trip cut short due to a flat. We are the local distributor of West Lake Performance Tyres and have a wide range of off road tyres to suit all 4wd’s. STEP 3. ACCESSORIES When traveling off road there
are a few aftermarket accessories that not only give your vehicle a tough exterior, but can help protect and get you out of sticky situations. Especially when traveling up to The Cape, you will trek through some tight tracks and deep river crossing. We recommend fitting your vehicle with an Ironman 4x4 Airforce Snorkel, solid Bullbar as well as heavy duty Rails and Side Steps. We know not all off road adventures go to plan, and before you know it, you are stuck in the mud. This is where a Monster Winch, comes in handy, it is sure to pull you out of trouble. Before you go out on your next 4x4 adventure, you know where to go first, NQ Off Road Specialists. Call (07) 4092 1020 or find us on Facebook.
See Cameron, Bob and the experienced team at NQ Off Road Specialists before you head off on a trip.

White wins national competition
MAREEBA local Natalie White will now be seeing her shirt design donned on Pony Club Australia members all around the country after she won the national competition. The competition judged 56 shirt designs from all corners of the country but 16 year old Natalie’s design stood out and spoke to the judges. After being narrowed down to being in the top eight designs Natalie got a whopping 52 percent of the vote from all of the Pony Club Australia members, catapulting her to winning the competition. Natalie was surprised when she was named the winner of the competition especially since she entered on a whim. “It feels good to know that someone from up here can do something big,” she said. “It was sort of a ‘why not’ decision to enter the competition.
“It’s good to see my design floating around everywhere.” Natalie’s design incorporates what she loves about Pony Club – its ability to offer plenty of variety and the chance to learn new skills. It also features silhouettes of six horse sports, show jumping, eventing, dressage, mounted games, camp drafting and sporting. Pony Club Australia Board Director Juliet Skinner said that Natalie’s winning design will be worn by Pony Club Australia members all around the country. “What we were looking for was a good design that would translate well to a shirt,” she said. “This shirt can be used anytime but mainly during rallies when members are riding. “This is a shirt that is now recognised all around Australia.”

Internationl debuts for Mareeba in tough match THE Mareeba United Football Club travelled away on Sunday to take on table toppers Edge Hill United. The Match at Tiger Park and the 4pm kick off caused havoc with both sides having to deal with glaring sunlight as the ball was lost mid-flight on numerous occasions. The Match started at a frantic pace with both sides trying to settle in quickly with both Josh De Nittis and Wayne Srhoj marshalling the troops well. Mareeba had some early half chances but failed to capitalize. A soft goal in the 36th minute by McDonnell sent the Tigers into the break with a 1-0 half time lead. The second half began promising for the Bulls as they tried to get an equalizer but squandered may opportunities in front of goal. In two terrible minutes and a total lapse of concentration, the Tigers through Casson and
Taylor put the home side up by three. A surprise substitution in the 70th minute saw Mareeba’s new signing take the field in the form of Richard Fono a current Solomon Island International who is in the country on a work visa. The crafty international showed his sheer talent and was unlucky not to score with his first touch of the ball. He did score in the 83rd minute on debut, but not enough to rescue the Bulls from a 3-1 defeat. “A tough game, that five minute lapse in the second half cost us the match apart from that we had our chances again but we were not clinical enough in front of goal,” said Bulls Coach Ang Tatti. “We kept Richard quiet for a while, he has been training with us for the last few weeks and will bring a bit more spark to the forward line and he did get on the score sheet in his first game off
the bench, very much a handy player to have at our disposal.” In other matches played over the weekend the Mareeba Premier Reserves had a solid 2-0 win over the Tigers while the Premier Women’s match was a real nail bitter with Edge Hill sealing a 1-0 win with virtually the last kick of the ball. The Bulls Premier Youth got back on track with the 3-0 win over the Tigers. On Friday Night in the local Tablelands derby, the Bulls Second Division had a 1-0 win over the Atherton Eagles. The Men’s third Division played out a 1-1 draw with Stratford United, the Mareeba Ladies reserves had a 3-1 loss to Marlin Coast Rangers and the Colts played out a 0-0 draw against Edge Hill United. This coming weekend the Bull’s will travel away to Walker Road Field to take on the Southside Comets.
Solomon Islands International Richard Fono came off the bench to score on debut for the Bulls but it wasn’t enough for Coach Ang Tatti.
