Festive spirit lights up on Christmas Eve

The Christmas spirit is well and truly in the air. With only one more sleep to go, excitement is building across the region. Photographer Peter Roy captured this amazing photo of families enjoying the Christmas Light Tour around Mareeba on Seary Road, by horse and carriage. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our readers.

Plan to cut bills

By Justin Fris

THE Newman government has pledged to reduce household electricity bills for Cook electorate families, if re-elected in 2015. The Queensland Competition Authority (QCA)has gone on the record of saying that households would save $49 and businesses $88 per year under the guidance of the Newman government. With all candidates and parties gearing up for an intense battle for seats, Member for Cook

David Kempton outlined ideal reduction figures for families. “We know families and businesses have been hit by large bill increases and we’ve been working hard to keep more money in their pockets.” In order to achieve balance and fairness for our readership in reportage of the matter, The Express sought response from other political candidates within the Cook electorate. Along with a right of reply, further opportunity was given for candidates to provide detail on their own electricity price initiatives, should they

KAP candidate for Cook Lee Marriott said he wasn’t sure the Newman government would be able to ensure long-term relief from exorbitant electricity prices. “I don’t agree that they will be able to reduce costs,” he said. “Maybe in the short term, but with privatisation of assets, it makes the process more difficult.” If victorious in the Cook electorate race next year, Mr Marriott said he would be keen for greater research into feed-in tariffs, which could reduce prices over time.

be elected at next year’s state election. ALP candidate for Cook Billy Gordon said the Newman government had promised a $120 reduction in electricity bills for families prior to the 2012 election; a target he doesn’t believe has been fulfilled. “David Kempton and Campbell Newman promised that electricity bills would go down by $120 at the last election,” he said. “Instead electricity prices are up $442 for the average household – a massive 43 per cent rise in only two and a half years.

WAVES of support from local Mareeba State High School students has resulted in the Mareeba Swimming Pool acquiring a shade cloth for greater sun protection. After being presented with a petition and concerned dialogue from students, Member for Cook David Kempton urged that the local community voice their support. The ground work of the petition was compounded by solid social media attention, with over 1200 people adding their approval. Pool officials were happy with the ultimate result, which will see the shade cloth from the Tobruk Memorial Baths (North Cairns) being removed and relocated to Mareeba. Mr Kempton met with MSP and MSC officials, along with The Express last Friday for the official announcement. Mareeba Shire Council CEO Peter Franks said up to $46,512 (90 per cent) of the project cost would be supplied from the Newman government, with the remaining 10% being achieved through the MSC. “It’ll make the Mareeba Swimming Pool a lot more useable,” he said. “Unfortunately we (MSC) didn’t have the opportunity to generate all of the project costs; but we are grateful for the input from David Kempton.” These sentiments were echoed by MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore, who said the new cloth would provide a solid sunsmart message throughout the local community. “The project will encourage active, healthy lifestyles in the Mareeba community by providing

Queensland has one of the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, and anything we can do to help reduce that, we will,” Mayor Gilmore said. “Projects of this nature make a tremendous contribution to the local commu-

nity, and Council thanks all those who got behind it.” The Express would like to congratulate all stakeholders for coming together for this initiative; but special recognition must go to the students at Mareeba State High school.

Katter’s tribute to Tablelands dairy farmer By Justin Fris

JOURNALIST Justin Fris

ADMINISTRATION / ONLINE PRODUCER Natasha Burton

FEDERAL Member for Kennedy Bob Katter said he will remember Russell Fry as a man who truly ‘represented the cause of his people.’ A man who was a proud dairy farmer for over 45 years, Mr Fry never showed signs of slowing down. In September, he was recognised at the National Landcare Awards for his dedication to the industry. Mr Fry passed away recently, after decades of serving the community with his heart on his sleeve. Mr Katter reflected thoughtfully on the imprint his great friend and mentor had made on the Tablelands. “He tenaciously opposed the sale of the dairy factory,” he said. “He was one of the very few people on the Tablelands who stood up and said deregulation would be disastrous for the industry.

Tablelands students top the class By Justin Fris

YEAR 12 students across the Tablelands have again confirmed their place as some of Qld’s academic elite. Mareeba State High School student Liam Posselt received an OP 1; culminating in a magnificent mix of hard work, desire and a solid emotional grounding. Liam woke at 5am last Saturday and found out about his result; from there he went about his regular routine and picked lychees to help his family on the farm. The Express caught up with Liam and his proud parents, Gerhard and Maria. They were really happy (pictured right) about their son’s achievements. Further down the Kennedy Highway, Atherton also had every reason to smile after a trio of students received OP 2’s. Grace Lawrence, Jess Howe and Bethany Heidenreich spoke with The Express about their study and time management commitments; spending up to 30 hours a week studying prior to the QCS test. The girls said they found the poetry component of the QCS test the most challenging; due to the wording of the ques-

tions and amount of context required for each answer. Healthy eating and sleep habits were also discussed; with both playing a pivotal role in allowing for optimal performance when it was required. 2015 will bring new challenges for Liam and the girls, who will all begin tertiary education for the first time. This will mean they will need to relocate from the Tablelands and settle in with a new environment in the city. These achievements are just a taste of success which has been achieved across the state, with 45,113 students receiving their QCE (Certificate of Education) an increase of 2467 on the same timeframe last year. In terms of the cream of the crop, 738 Year 12’s attained the coveted OP 1which slightly improved slightly on previous years. Above all, inclusiveness within our education system is the most satisfying; with 702 learning impaired students receiving a QCIA (Qld Certificate of Individual Achievement) for their hard work. Well done to all students on their efforts.

Creative brilliance stops vandalism in its tracks By Justin Fris

GRAFFITI is being cleaned up in both the Cook and Mareeba Shires; as the result of much needed support from the Newman government. A successful program dubbed ‘Creative Art for Everyone’ (CAFE for short) has been able to continue, due to a significant financial injection. Member for Cook David Kempton said over $68,000 had been provided to both councils, in a bid to completely wipe vandalism from our streets. “The majority of graffiti and property crimes in Kuranda and Maree-

ba are committed by youths under the age of 24,” Mr Kempton said. “This program encourages both offenders and the wider community, to take part in weekly art classes, also educating young people about the consequences of their actions.” Mr Kempton added the significance of an increased CCTV presence in Cook Shire, along with improved lighting. “Fourteen cameras are being installed across the waterfront development including eight at the waterfront, four at the wharf area, and two at the event centre.” Additionally, a social application called ‘GraffitiSTOP’ has been established, in a bid for local residents to do their bit for the local community. If you see or know about any graffiti or vandalism within the Tablelands region, please report it by calling the following number: 1300 GRAFFITI (1300 472 334). The mural at Mooraridgi Park is a fantastic example of how creative artists can revitalise local facilities.

Xmas comp rewards local shoppers Carolyn Peace with The Express’s Natasha Burton and Rachael Lambert’s children are very excited with mum’s vouchers.

THERE were smiles and cheers of excitement, when the winners of The Express’s “Shop Local Christmas” competition were drawn on Friday, December 19. There were three draws and each lucky winner received $500 in vouchers from local stores who were a part of the promotion. The winners were: Warren Phillips of Kairi, who entered after shopping at Atherton Bolts ‘n’ Tools, Rachael Lambert with her ticket from T-Hire and Carolyn Peace of Mareeba with her lucky ticket from Coles Mareeba. The competition, which is run by The Express every year and is designed to encourage Tablelands residents to shop in local businesses for Christmas. The three winners, who were selected from a pool of about 15,000 tickets, can spend their

vouchers at the 30 stores that participated in the competition. The Express Managing Editor Carl Portella said the annual competition had been once again embraced by Tableland shoppers. “This competition has been popular from the beginning,” he said. “But it’s always great to see locals supporting locals – that’s what makes the Tableland a great community. “It’s very popular with both businesses and their customers because not only does it help keep money in this area instead of going down to the coast; people know they are helping keep the place they live vibrant and economically strong. “We’ve had thousands and thousands of people entering the competition – probably the most ever.”

Herberton event to tighten link with ANZAC Day By Justin Fris

HERBERTON will accommodate a special ANZAC Day event in 2015; which will foster the close association between the Tablelands and the sacred dawn service. Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long highlighted the unique connection that Herberton has with ANZAC Day. “We are enormously

privileged that the man who began the tradition of the Dawn Service, Pastor White, rests in the Herberton Cemetery,” she said. “In the Centenary Year of Gallipoli, it is appropriate the nation recognises the sacrifices that have been made.” In conjunction with the Herberton Lions, the iconic service will be held at the grave site of Pastor White, as thousands will gather to pay their respects.

Following the ceremony, the TRC will formally release an ANZAC Day trail across the council jurisdiction. “Council is fortunate to have secured the services of highly-experienced local heritage consultant Gordon Grimwade, who will work closely with community groups and individuals to draw together the district’s rich World War 1 heritage,” Herberton has a unique connection with ANZAC Day (Photo- Supplied) Mayor Lee Long said.

‘Best Residence’ at Rankin Street, Mareeba. Photo by Peter Roy

More than just pretty lights at Christmas By Justin Fris

MAREEBA Shire Council’s ‘Light up your Region’ for Christmas competition again provided a quality stable of winners. Seary Road in Mareeba can claim to be the most festive in the town, after walking away with the ‘Best Street’ category, while Mareeba Mitre 10 was victorious in the business category. ‘Best Rural’ was awarded to Colin and Dianne Scott of McGrath Road, with an honourable mention given to Danny and Belinda Adams.

Mareeba’s ‘Best Residence’ went to Mr Bradley Claffey of Rankin Street, who also donated $1000 of his prize toward the ‘Make-a-Wish’ foundation. An honourable mention also went to John and Sue Hamill. In an interview with The Express, Mr Claffey explained the rare nature of the victory; and its legacy beyond the festive season. “We are the only (Christmas lights) house in FNQ that are affiliated with the ‘Make-A-Wish’ foundation,” he said. “I’ve had lots of clients whose kids have been involved in the foun-

dation and the significance of helping sick children was very important to me.” Mr Claffey encouraged local residents to attend Rankin Street tonight and visit his winning entry. Food will be available for purchase, with all proceeds going toward the donation total. “At the moment, we have donated $1000 toward ‘Make-A-Wish’ and hope that tonight we can increase our donation.” Mr Claffey’s fantastic genorosity to others is inspiring.

Growers come together as one By Justin Fris

GROWERS from within 21 separate sectors of the horticulture industry have united to form an umbrella group dubbed: ‘Voice of Horticulture’. An industry which brings $50 million to the Australian economy annually, horticulture is also the largest sector of rural employment across the nation. ‘Voice of Horticulture’ Director John Dollisson was encouraged by the formation of the group and that future opportunities to expand the industry were exciting. “There is a huge potential to increase our horticultural exports even further,” he said.

“If we have more of our fresh produce exported we start to see an improvement in the balance of trade – great news for the economy, whilst at the same time growing the horticulture sector in Australia. “But our growers need support to realise this potential. “Voice of Horticulture will work with government and politicians to improve domestic production and export market access for horticultural products; ensure Free Trade Agreements benefit growers; and work on issues that unite us like labelling, biosecurity and chemical use.” VOH Chairman Tania Chapman said horticulture provided 60,000 jobs across the country and said the

new venture had caught the eye of key personnel. “Too often in the past our industry was seen as fragmented,” she said. “We recently received recognition from Barnaby Joyce, who tweeted that he was excited to work with us.” Ms Chapman said the industry was deeply concerned with Australia’s surging obesity levels; and that it was hoped the trend could abate in the New Year. In conjunction with the establishment of a research corporation (Horticulture Innovation Australia) would have greater prominence on the main stage. “VOH will act as a conduit between HIA and growers within the industry,” Ms Chapman said.

EXPRESSyourself LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Reply to Allan Webb As a long term Mareeba resident, it saddens me greatly to see and read some of the antiMuslim sentiment that has been voiced in the media regarding the proposed Standard Bearers Academy near Mareeba. I felt the need to respond after reading the statements from Allan Webb in the other paper on 12/12/14. His ugly statements denigrated anyone from the Middle East and their religion. His statements need to be challenged as I believe his ignorance of both the Islamic faith and arab people are very negative; and also have an impact on the Muslims community living here. I am pleased to see that people in the community are speaking out against this bigotry and supporting a more cooperative, tolerant approach to the school. I gather there had been an issue with the lack of information about the Academy; and this seems to have progressed far beyond the issue, to an attack on the Islamic faith. We have lived in harmony with people from many different cultures and religions in Mareeba; and that is what I regard as one of Mareeba’s major assets. I feel it is such a retrograde step to be influenced by the paranoia and fear of some people who lump all Muslims together and therefore all that they do as suspicious. It is a very sad time that such ugly sentiments reside here. Melissa Waters, Mareeba

Armchair critics take aim again It didn’t take long after the horrific events in Sydney for the armchair critics to demonstrate their enormous talent for running off at the mouth before putting their brains into gear.

editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au The Express reserves the right to edit letters

One such critic wanted to know why the police didn’t shoot the perpetrator through the glass when he appeared momentarily at the window. Really? Most of the buildings in that part of Sydney have very thick glass in their windows and in some cases that glass is armour plated. Can you imagine the consequences if a shot was fired and the perpetrator was not killed? The result for the hostages would be too horrible to contemplate. I hope the police are not forced to reveal every detail of their operation on this day. Revealing all would only help planners of any future attempts to kidnap people and hold them hostage. Police and counter-terrorist agencies must be allowed to keep the details of their operations from the general public. Peter Beatts, Mareeba

Follow your own heart I am an Atheist; however I have no objections to anyone choosing to follow any faith. I only say this to indicate that I have no bias against any religion but believe that it is best to follow your own Faith within and not be bigoted towards followers of other faiths. I am appalled and ashamed that some residents of Mareeba and Townsville are expressing bigotry in the most vile ways about the proposed Islamic school in Mareeba. Threatening to destroy a project is surely a criminal act and should be pursued by the authorities. “Burying pigs”, is so childish as to be unbelievable behaviour by adults. Followers of all faiths have their radicals including Christians, Muslims, Jews and Buddhists. To judge all by the behaviour of a few is dangerous and disregards the major teachings of all faiths. “Do unto others.” I implore adherents and leaders of all faiths to condemn the views of these tragi-

Wind farm developer busts own myths It’s time for the uninformed to get informed about the “benefits” of the Mount Emerald Wind Farm project. The developer’s own documents answer the following: Will the wind farm power 75,000 homes? Yes, but no; no homes at all when the wind doesn’t blow. Can the project meet the requirements of Queensland’s noise guidelines which other industries are required to meet? No, Ratch has stated the noise levels are “not considered to be practically achievable”. Will there be local jobs during construction? Ratch can’t say – the successful contractor will decide (interstate companies with their own teams are already tendering). Are electricity transmission losses from southern fossil-fuelled power stations really 40%? No, Ratch’s modelling shows 11% for 2017-2018 (similar to present and past losses). Will the wind farm save the government $600m in community service obligation payments to Ergon? No, Ratch’s modelling shows only $11m (this saving will likely be lost through less efficient operation of the government’s power stations and devaluation of its assets through increasing energy oversupply). Will there be training opportunities? Ratch can’t say – the successful contrac-

tor will decide (interstate companies are already tendering). Will there be local jobs during the operation phase? YES. One manager, one administrator, four part-time ecologists, two cleaners/ groundsmen/handymen, 10-12 technicians to service the turbines (as this occurs only six monthly they are likely to be experienced contractor teams from interstate). No full-time staff are required on site at all times as the turbines are operated remotely. What compulsory subsidies will be paid by electricity consumers for this project? $38 per megawatt hour, or $20 million annually – over $500 million during the life of the project (this will rise to $40 or $50 million annually if the Renewable Energy Target remains unchanged) Can someone please tell me again what the benefits of this project are (that is, apart from the huge benefit to the foreign developer and the wealthy landowners)? greetings

Look how far we have come As we near the end of 2014, my message to our readers these holidays is to take stock. Each year we seem to get busier and busier; and as a result, some of the simple joys that come with living in this extraordinary part of the world can be forgotten. That is the beauty of Christmas. It allows us, for a brief while, to reflect on the challenges we have faced, the adversity we have overcome, as well as those moments of happiness and success. As a newspaper, we are in the privileged position of being to able to share with you, our readers, the good times and the hard. In writing this message, I spent time flicking through file copies of The Express from this year and I am amazed how far we have come as a region. As a newspaper it has been a year of change and growth. It has been gratifying how quickly the Atherton community has embraced our newspaper; and we look forward to working closely with the community in 2015. Our offices will close on December 24 and we will reopen on January 6,

Mayor Tom Gilmore and wife Sally

‘The essence of Christmas is charity’ As we come to the end of another year, we turn our focus to family and friends; and of course to the celebration of Christmas which is, for many, one of the most important Christian celebrations of the year. It is also a time for reflection on the past year; our achievements and of course our failures, and to plan for the things that we hope for, for the year which is yet to come. However, the essence of Christmas time is charity and good will to the whole of mankind; irrespective of race, colour or creed. It is a time to remember those within our community who are less fortunate than others, and to assist in making Christmas celebrations memorable and a time of joy; especially for the children and grand-children in our community. On behalf of the Councillors and staff at the Mareeba Shire Council I wish everyone a safe and healthy Christmas and a positive New Year.

Carl Portella looks back at what the community has achieved this year.

The Christmas Angel (A true story) By John G Lake A great shouting of the drivers and a mighty cracking of whips indicates that they are endeavouring to stop the team. The owner of the wagon shouts “Outspan,” meaning unhitch, and the men proceed to loose the oxen and turn them out for pasture. The others prepare supper on a fire built near the wagon. We are just preparing to spread our blankets and lie down for the night when, another wagon is seen to be approaching. When it comes close, one of the men in the party accompanying the wagon asked us if he may talk. We all sit together while he tells us at great length that his brother, A sick man, is in the wagon along with his aged Mother. Many moons ago a missionary had come to their hut and talk to the sick brother of One called JESUS, Who saves humanity from their sins and healed them of diseases. He said “We are seeking for Him.” The man told us that four days before, an angel came to his brother in the hut as he slept, and taking him by the shoulder awoke

him, saying “Come with me”. Then the angel took him by the arm and led him out of the hut and down the road a short distance to where the two roads divided. Pointing down the road to the right the angel said “go three days on this road; cross the great river and on the third evening, when the sun is set, you will find some men camping by a wagon. They are missionaries. They will pray for you and you will be healed of your sickness.” In the morning the young man, believing it to be a dream told his mother. But the younger brother said “Perhaps it is God’s angel that has come to my brother”. So the oxen were hitched to the wagon; and the sick man was laid upon it. For three days they laboriously travelled over the mountains of South Africa, looking to fulfil the angel’s words. We were greatly impressed by the simplicity and sincerity of the brother’s statement, when he had finished relating to us his story; we accompanied him to the wagon where the sick man lay. Looking into the beautiful heavens and realizing that possibly at that

very hour, under the same beautiful skies of Palestine the Christ had been born, and the shepherds had listened to the angelic host’s, message “Peace on earth, good will to all men,” We reverently obeyed the word of Christ, laid our hands upon the sick man, praying that the power of God should come upon him and heal him of his terrible disease and enlighten his spirit with a knowledge of God and His love. His face changed. The peace of God was in him, the virtue of Jesus flowed through him and his pains were ALL gone. He fell asleep… and arose totally healed of his Leprosy. Christmas morning, he bid us goodbye, saying, “I am going home to tell all my people of your Jesus and how He healed me, and of your Christmas angel, and of the power of your wonderful God, Who has made me well again. We proceeded on our journey rejoicing that the angel had led the way to the healing and saving Christ. After all Jesus is the reason for the season. Have an awesome Christmas and an incredible New Year. - The Church of Living Waters Mareeba

I can feel the wheels of rush, hustle and bustle speed up. It must be Christmas time. There are last minute presents to buy, food preparation to think of and 1000 things to do before Christmas D0ay dawns. I look forward to the wheels slowing down, the urgency of life suspended and days of leisure to be enjoyed. That’s not really what Christmas is all about, however it is one of the benefits of celebrating the birth of Jesus over 2000 years ago that everybody can experience and enjoy. Many today do the same: doctors, teachers, parents, farmers, in fact, everybody who is called to put their hand to the wheel and give of their best. Christ is around us every day of the year Christians have been persecuted for their entire history. And yet it was the Christians, Alfred The Great and Charlemange, that saved Europe from the Vikings and the Middle Eastern invading forces. There is remarkable unanimity on who are the six greatest scientists in human history: Louis Pasteur, Newton, Galelio, Einstein, Mendel, Faraday. Every single one of them was a devout Judeo Christian. Newton wrote seven books on theology, Mendel was a Monk, Farday a Pastor. The abolition of slavery was completely attributable to the Christians. The collapse of the communist

totalitarian oppression was once again attributable to the Christians. When the first try was scored in the fairytale Rabbitohs grand final, the winger looked straight up to God and blew him a salute. The fastest man in all of human history makes the sign of the cross before blasting out of the blocks. To quote the great Country Music song writer Stan Coster, “When life’s going easy, God is far from our minds. We say we are lucky, or smart, but I find when the bad things and sad things darken our day, then we call out to Jesus in a most selfish way”.

‘Challenges can be overcome’ As I write this Festive Season Message, Christmas is rapidly approaching; and is always a time that focusses on family and friends. For many the important message delivered in the story of Christ’s life is at the heart of Christmas. I often refer to the opportunity at this time to renew connections with family and friends, especially those you don’t normally see too often, and to enjoy the Spirit of Christmas with those close to you. It is also a great time to let

those people you see every day know that they are not taken for granted. For some, circumstances make the Festive Season more challenging than normal. Perhaps finances are especially tight. Illness may be present. There are many things in modern life that can throw a bump in the road. We may face challenges in our workplaces or perhaps in our private lives. Hopefully, this is a time of year when we can appreciate that those challenges can be overcome, especially with the help and support of those around

Let joy fill your heart as you ponder the birth of a child called Jesus

This Christmas, let joy fill your heart as you ponder upon the birth of a child, Jesus, whose name is above every name. Imagine his mother Mary; joyfully looking into the eyes of her new born as she remembers the words of an angel: “He will be great, he will be called the son of the highest, and his kingdom will never end.” At the same time, Judean shepherds received a heavenly visitation by a multitude of angels; and a star was placed in the eastern sky, revealing to the wise men that the King of the Jews has been born. Tell me, did this happen at your birth? No! Nor mine. The reason being is that Jesus was and is the son of God; sent on our behalf that mankind may experience God’s love and forgiveness and live in fellowship with him. So rejoice and have a blessed Christmas! – Darryl Roos, Abundance Life Centre

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from...

greetings

Look around you at the love, peace, hope and joy As we face the Christmas season, the themes to the four weeks leading up to the day come to mind; Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. Each of these is important by themselves, but when we combine them they certainly help us to get the season into focus. Hope is a good foundation, because without hope we would never be able to dream of something better. Peace is elusive, and in some parts of the world, it is almost completely absent. Yet at this time, we trust that god is never absent from us. God is always preparing something new. And even where there is war and discord, whether between countries, within families, or within our own hearts, God is present, gently leading us to new possibilities Joy is all around us – in the children, the lights, the music, the gathering together. But how often do we let our preparations – or our memories – push joy to the side? Joy is a choice, an attitude. Like a muscle,

it needs to be exercised. So we need to open ourselves to joy, trusting that God has already planted it in us. Love is signified through the love of God that surrounds and fills us at all times, but that we recognize in a special way in the Christmas story. There is no greater power than love. It is stronger than governments and empires, stronger than grief or despair. We love, because God loves us. As I write this I am watching the images of the devastation in Sydney and Pakistan. Amidst the terror, we find strangers from all walks of life expressing love and solidarity with the victims and each other. This is the attitude of life which Jesus would have and asks us all to have. The Mareeba Uniting Church wishes you a wonderful Christmas and a hopeful, peaceful, joyous and love-filled new year. – Rev. Peter Blauw, Mareeba Uniting Church.

I find it interesting walking through the shops to see what trends the Christmas Cards take each year. Some years there a beautiful snow scenes with pine trees, a cottage and smoking chimney and words of wellwishing for the ‘Holiday’ season. At other times, Santa, Rudolf and Christmas trees surrounded by gifts are the prominent feature. Some years, the traditional nativity scene of baby Jesus lying in a manger surrounded by Joseph, Mary, barn animals, shepherds, sheep, wise men and camels are the focus. In the nativity scenes on cards, everything looks so perfect; to see a baby lying in a golden manger of straw. The designers and artists tend to filter out the reality of the event; probably because the reality wouldn’t sell cards. Think for a moment about Jesus being born in a stable where the animals are kept. This happened as there was no room in normal accommodation; for his fam-

ily who had travelled from Nazareth. The dust and odour of the stable would not have been a pristine place to deliver a baby. It would have been messy and noisy. The manger really was a feeding trough. God came as a helpless human baby, so that he could identify with his creation; and once grown into adulthood, influence people back to a personal and intimate relationship with the living God and creator of all. As pastor of Atherton Tablelands Baptist Church, it is my privilege to introduce people to Jesus, the saviour of the world. And I trust this Christmas time will be an opportunity for people to reflect on the saviour, who started in humble beginnings with the plan of living; to point people back to God and ultimately dying and rising again form the dead. So as to give hope for the future to all who place their faith in him. – Pastor John Whyte, Atherton Tablelands Baptist Church

At Christmas we celebrate the birth of a child born in Bethlehem A child is born in Bethlehem! New life here, urgent for growth, demanding our attention, full of promise and hope, surfacing our anxious response. It is so for the birth of any child. “Peaceful” Bethlehem is a fantasy of romantic poets. Then, as now, it seethed with repressed political and social tension; a complicated symbol for competing dreams. Not in an idyllic setting, not when everything

is tidily in order; but in the very heart of this disease, Jesus the prince of peace is born. We celebrate the birth of a child born in Bethlehem at Christmas so long ago – Jesus – yet more than a child: God in our midst. God can be worshipped anywhere, but we build churches where we can physically gather to worship, or we would soon forget both our need to worship and our need for

‘The wonder of it all is impossible to comprehend’ The wise men who travelled to Bethlehem from the east all those years ago had many difficulties to contend with along the way. But even today, getting to Bethlehem is no straight forward matter. Bethlehem is only about ten kilometres from Jerusalem; but, as it is within the Palestinian territory, security requirements prevent visitors from taking the most direct route. Instead, it is necessary to make a long detour around the outskirts of Jerusalem; and at one point the way is blocked completely by the security fence which the Israeli government has built around the West Bank. The security fence is a forbidding wall of solid grey concrete seven metres high and hundreds of kilometres long. At the checkpoint, young Israeli soldiers armed with automatic weapons thoroughly examine travel documents before anyone is allowed to proceed.

In Bethlehem itself, the Church of the Nativity is found in an unimposing square; and its battered façade shows evidence of various modifications over the centuries. The outline of the original main door can still be seen clearly. That entrance was so large that visitors could ride straight through on horse or camel. To put an end to that practice, the doorway was filled in with stonework, leaving only the tiny entrance that is in use today. This entrance is so small that it is now necessary to bow and bend low to gain access to the church. A large silver star set into the stone floor at the base of an altar marks the spot where Jesus was born. Here God came among us. Here the wise men came to see a baby born in a stable, “and falling to their knees they did him homage” (Mt 2:11). The wonder of it all is impossible to comprehend. Perhaps it is only in the circuitous journey itself

and in the final act of bending low that we find a way to approach the mystery of God who came among us as the baby born in Bethlehem.

by adding karate chips and a metal plated armour, provides some of the funniest scenes. I laughed when Baymax self-deflates in order to squeeze through a window and the scene when his battery is low and he gives the impression of intoxication is hilarious. There is plenty of action with a thrilling car chase and great flying sequences, in which Baymax zigzags between skyscrapers and beyond - above the cherry blossoms and the Japanesestyled Golden Gate Bridge high into the clouds. The challenge is to prise the kabuki mask from the villain that controls the microbots; Hiro and his pals now assumed the status of super heroes, having transformed themselves into inventive, colourful and deadly robot suits. Recommended for every age, this cool, sick, cute and hilarious film has something for everyone.

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES

Review by Louise Keller: Bursting with heart, this zippy, switched on family-friendly 3D animation whose Marvel origins are coated with Disney magic, comprises brilliantly clever concepts that are dashingly executed for maximum thrills and enjoyment. Set in a futuristic hybrid city encompassing elements of Tokyo and San Francisco, the characters are also a mash-up of East and West, promoting strong moral values in the fight of good versus evil. Among the inventive science-nerd students who become super heroes is the star of the piece: a hilarious, blow-up robotic nurse called Baymax, programmed to address any state of wellbeing, physical or emotional. Like me, you will fall in love with this giant walking marshmallow - between laughs, thrills and saving the world. Screenwriters Robert L. Baird, Daniel Gerson and Jordan Roberts have collaborated to produce a wonderfully innovative script that combines humour, action and character. The establishment of the young genius protagonist Hiro (voice of Ryan Potter), whose passion for pushing the boundaries of robotics, is quickly made, along with his close relationships - with his brother Tadashi (Daniel Henney) and super-cool friends Fred (T.J. Miller), Go Go (Jamie Chung), Wasabi (Damon Wayans Jr.) and Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez). Baymax appears early in the piece, being the invention of Tadashi, who inspires his younger brother to use his intellect at his university lab.

Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and Company are forced to engage in a war against an array of combatants and keep the terrifying Smaug from acquiring a kingdom of treasure and obliterating all of Middle-Earth.

Hiro's invention of microbots controlled by a transmitter that mould and evolve like liquid metal (think Terminator 2), is limited only by imagination, but when it falls into the wrong hands... you get the idea. Meanwhile, Hiro's modifications of the white plastic blow-up Baymax, as he tries to mask the latter's congenial nature

PROPERTY Cute cottage in Mareeba I am a lowset 1960’s style weatherboard cottage located on a quarter acre (1012m2) in the heart of town. I have recently undergone a makeover and am ready for new owners. I would appeal to an elderly couple, first home buyer or someone living on their own who wants to be close to town amenities as I am only a short distance from the schools, shops, hospital or doctors. I have been freshly painted inside and out and have one super-sized bedroom with a built-in wardrobe, neat bathroom, separate toilet and laundry with linen storage. My large modern kitchen offers loads of bench and cupboard space and a timber breakfast bar overlooking the lounge and dining

area. There are beautiful polished timber floors and air-conditioning throughout my living area and bedroom. I am set back from the road for added privacy and have access to the backyard as well as a garden shed with lean-to for storage, 22,500L rainwater tank and mature lychee tree with fresh lychees to enjoy. I also have the advantage of being situated in the preferred area for high density residential developments lending myself to future development options. Come and take a closer look at me before someone else does. For further information or to arrange an inspection, please contact exclusive agents John Falvo or Sophie Bozzo at Mareeba Property Office. MUFC success celebrated at civic reception Alex Srhoj (middle) has laid the frame for the MUFC to have prolonged success.

been overhauled over the past two years, with game-related training proving dividends across the board. “You don’t train a piano player to do laps around the piano,” he said. “By adopting game-related drills into training, the bi-product will be good football.” “Last year we were fortunate with our game style, to wear teams down and not rely on set pieces to score our goals. In training sessions here, the ball simply doesn’t stop moving.” Dynasties for a sporting club at any level are extremely difficult to maintain. So many ingredients need to be equally accounted for, along with a slice of fortune. Squad management needs to be upheld; players retire, youth and reserve players knock on the selection table, which can cause lingering headaches for the best of coaches. Srhoj has left the MUFC in a fantastic position after years of dedication as an administrator. Hopefully the changing of the guard transition won’t skip a beat as the new season beckons for the locals.

By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba United Football Club was formally recognised by the Mareeba Shire Council at a civic reception at Borzi Park last Tuesday. Club officials, councillors, players and supporters all freely mingled during the evening, which celebrated a rare feat in Tablelands sporting history. Although the success may have tasted sweet, champions never rest on their laurels; with club officials not content to sit back. Outgoing MUFC President Alex Srhoj said the club had sights on another successful year in 2015, with many of the players still getting match fitness during the off-season. “Most of the players are involved in our 6-a-side competition, which has become an alternate for our pre-season training,” he said. “We will most likely begin formal training toward the end of January, ahead of the MAZDA Cup early in March.” Srhoj said pre-season training had

THE emergence of female rugby league in FNQ continues to dominate women’s sport, after solid participation numbers were recorded in a recent five week program in Cairns. Girls from all over the Tablelands made the journey down the range to Jones Park, who were keen to get an extra opportunity to learn and play rugby league. A total of 92 girls took part in the program, which was coordinated by NRL game development officers, local club staff and representatives from the QRL.

This positive result only tells part of the story; with female participation numbers across the state doubling in the space of two years. In a recent interview with Rugby League Week, QRL CEO Peter Betros said overall interest had played a major role in the increase; along with NRL employing more development staff tailored to helping grow the female game. If you are a female and keen to further your rugby league career, please contact NRL Game Development Officer Robbie Moore on 0402 892 834.

TAE KWON DO hosted its final event of the year on the Tablelands for the year at the Mareeba PCYC Hall on Saturday, December 13. Students from across the Tablelands (Atherton, Dimbulah and Mareeba) came together to show instructors and onlookers alike, just how much they had learned from their self defence training. Some of the techniques that were displayed were through: one and three step sparring, along with free sparring.

Black belt instructors were on hand as always to ensure a high quality of skill; with the emphasis of goal setting realised for many this year. Inspectors Gennaro Arena (Senior Regional) and Phil Quayle (Regional) were in charge of the grade examinations of the day, with plenty of decisions made. The Express would like to wish all members of the Tablelands Tae Kwon Do community a wonderful festive season and a successful year in their sport of choice.

The Express Newspaper is proud to support sport across our great region. We wish all clubs great success on the sporting field in 2015.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!
