First babies of the decade LOTS of people like to welcome in their New Year with a New Year’s resolution or cross something off their bucket list. For two Tableland couples, the new year meant a new addition to their growing families. Dean and Kelly Walker from Tolga welcomed in the New Year and the new decade with their new son, Beau, who was the first baby to be born at the Atherton Hospital for 2020. Even though baby Beau was born in 2020 he nearly arrived early as Kelly said “we had two false starts around Christmas but he wanted to make his grand entrance in the New Year” Baby Beau was born at 9.57am on January 2, and is a welcome baby brother for 2 year-old Hudson who Kelly says “is a proud and doting big brother” Kelly went home the very next day and is “now waiting in the calm before the storm” Gavin and Narcy Houston, welcomed in the New Year and Decade with a baby girl. Olivia Mikayla Houston arrived, January 2, at around 2.17pm at the Mareeba Hospital. Gavin welcomed his wife home on January 6 and said “Mum and bub were doing well and that Narcy was tired and was hoping to get some rest now that she was home.” Baby Olivia joins Gavin and Narcy and 2 year Aaron who is treating his sister as a “bit of a novelty”. Beau and Mikayla will now be remembered as the first baby boy and girl to be born are the start on the new decade.

LOCAL researcher Kathy Grice has toiled away for years in the tablelands working at the Mareeba Research Facility hoping to support local growers in her community. Dr Grice has worked closely with farmers and growers in the region and for her efforts, has recently received the ‘Lester Burgess Diagnostics and Extension Award’ This award acknowledges a person’s exceptional contributions to the field of crop disease diagnostics and extension in crop health in Australasia and is presented by the Australasian Plant Pathology Society Management Committee.
Dr Grice was nominated for this award by one of her colleagues at the University of Queensland, Jay Anderson and said Dr Grice was ‘very deserving of this prestigious award.’ “Kathy has helped many colleagues, consultants and importantly growers in helping to recognise and manage diseases of banana, avocado and mango,” Dr Anderson said. “Kathy is an expert in Banana leaf spot pathogen diagnostics and has been recognised for her work nationally and internationally.” Dr Grice was also influential in the diagnostic work that supported the black Sigatoka
eradication campaign, the first successful eradication of this disease in a commercial growing region anywhere in the world. Dr Grice was extremely humbled and honoured to receive this award. “I am honoured to receive this award and getting recognition from my peers,” she said. “There were a lot of other people who contributed to my nomination and I would like to thank them all.” Dr Grice was presented with her award at the Australasian Plant Pathology Society conference last year in November.

Claims of animal cruelty in Mareeba BY PHIL BRANDEL
LOCAL residents have made sensational claims to The Express about witnessing the killing and torture of Native Australian Animals in the Mareeba Shire. The residents who want to remain anonymous told The Express that “they have witnessed numerous acts of cruelty to Australian Native animals and that they want to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal. The acts allegedly witnessed on land near the old Pioneer cemetery include: • Quad bikes running down Wallabies. • 4WD’s bringing hunting dogs via the James Street access to chase and kill Wallabies. • Children hunting and killing Wallabies with sticks. • Domestic dogs chasing and killing Wallabies. • At least seven wallabies had been poisoned. • Wallabies that appear to have been shot with a rifle. • A male Curlew that was stoned and maimed by children while trying to defend the female which was sitting on eggs at the time.
The residents also claim to have had to put down a number of wallabies with broken legs and found numerous dead possums, kangaroo rats and other wildlife. They also claim to have been abused by local children who ride their motorbikes illegally in the area. Police confirmed to the Express that they have had reports
where there’s been information to identify the children involved, police have followed up with the children and their parents” Police also released a statement exclusively to The Express in regards to the animal cruelty claims: “There have been some reports that children in the area have tormented and injured
local wildlife. However, there’s been little evidence of any further mistreatment of animals on the reserve for police to follow up on. The attached images of dead wallabies are distressing, but they have little information to indicate any evidence of cruelty committed by any person, and in the absence of that information, it’s not something

In a further statement from the RSPCA Insp Newman wrote “We often have these issues where people only report to media and social media platforms but not to the regulatory authority and then get frustrated when nothing happens. They need to report it immediately to us at the time of the incident, to give us Inspectors the best chance to do a proper and timely investigation. We don’t have the ability or time to investigate every person and child in Mareeba and would require further information from the informant about who, what, when, where and how this is occurring. If they can provide further information, we are more than happy to investigate.” Police also added, “It is a criminal offence for any person to mistreat, or unlawfully injure or kill any animal, and police will not tolerate cruelty to any animal and encourage anyone who has any information regarding cruelty or mistreatment of animals, to contact police by calling PoliceLINK on 131444, or visit their local police station.”

“want to see the shire prosper and keep moving forward positively.” In a statement released last week the team stated that “financial stability, maintaining
and improving current service levels all the while pursuing better outcomes through the whole shire are just some of the team’s key objectives. “Through long term planning
and sustainable financial management” Mr Brown believes that his team has the ability and vision to help guide the Mareeba Shire through the next four years.
Mayor Paronella to call it a day TRC Mayor Joe Paronella will retire at the election in March this year.
IN October last year, Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore announced his retirement from local government and now another Tableland’s Mayor has called it quits. Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) Mayor Joe Paronella formally announced his retirement from the Mayoral race on Friday afternoon in an official statement from the TRC. “As many are already aware, I won’t be running for re-election, but I want to make sure the results of our handwork is handed over to a new team of elected officials who are fully aware of what the role entails, are ready to make more of the tough and sometimes unpopular decisions, and will continue to carry this Council and our region onwards and upwards.” The official statement also included: “I always said my main goal was to leave this Council better than what it was when I arrived and I’m really proud of how this Council has conducted itself and what we have achieved over the last four years. “The Councillors knew that many decisions we would make would not be popular but would result in the best long-term outcomes for our community. We
have a competent, passionate and experienced team of leaders at the helm who have made significant progress in re-establishing systems and processes, improving internal communications and collaboration, and building the capability and capacity across the organisation.” In the statement, Mayor Pranoella listed a few highlights from his tenour including: “We have invested in our staff, which is an investment in our community.” “We’ve worked hard to repair relationships with our nearby shires and Mayors, and state and federal members.” “We’ve improved our engagement with youth and developed a Reconciliation Action Plan to guide our relationships and opportunities with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.” “We’ve significantly increased our investment in roads and bridges, and improved and streamlined our maintenance and inspection programs.” “Our financial footing has improved, and we have focused on long-term planning, the success of which may not be realised for years to come.” “The Council is in a good
financial position with low debt and projected operating surpluses over the next ten years.” The Mayor said he was now looking forward to spending more time with family and friends and “enjoying the retirement that I postponed four years ago. Thank you to my wife Wendy who has supported me and been my rock during my 12 years of local government,” Mr Paronella served as a Councillor for Atherton Shire Council for two terms and was elected mayor of Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) in 2016. Over the past 4 years, the TRC has been plagued by rumours of council corruption, unaccountability and overstaffing as well as the gagging of councillors and excessive rate risers. At the time Mayor Paronella responded in an open letter to residents by saying “We are one of the most transparent and open councils in Queensland,” “We have referred allegations of any wrongdoing to appropriate authorities including the Crime and Corruption Commission, who have determined the allegations as being vexatious or frivolous.” Friday’s official statement followed an announcement earlier that the Tablelands Regional Council’s Deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick would officially nominate to run for the top job come the March Local Government Elections. In an exclusive interview with The Express (Page 5) Ms Mellick revealed that she had made her decision to run for Mayor after discussing it with her family and friends over the festive break. Local council elections are being held on March 28.

TABLELANDS Regional Council’s deputy Mayor Katrina Mellick has officially nominated to run for the top job come the March Local Government Elections. In an exclusive interview with The Express on Thursday Ms Mellick revealed that she made her decision to run for mayor after discussing it with her family and friends over the festive break. With a past history in employment and business, Ms Mellick brings years of experience and a full term as deputy mayor of TRC to the table. “You find your vocation when you marry your passion with your skills and experience,” she said. “I have been very fortunate in my life that I have always felt fulfilled in whatever roll I’ve had. “If someone told me six years ago that I would be in council I would have told them they were dreaming and even now to consider running for mayor it’s tak-
en me a long time to come to the decision I have. “I think it’s because I really do care about the region and the people in it and feel a strong sense of prosperity for the future. “It’s the right time for me, I’ve had time to reflect and talk to my son Tom and the rest of my family and they fully support me in the decision I have made. “When I was elected initially I wasn’t aware of the enormity of the situation, it was going to take a lot of money and a lot of hard decision making to get the outcome we wanted. “People may not see it, but we as a council have worked hard to achieve what we did, just aligning all the internal systems and processes so we have the efficiencies that were intended after De-Amalgamation. “Was De-Amalgamation a good or a bad thing? Well it’s like a divorce it all depends on who you ask. “Both councils are now

working collectively together and that’s a good thing. Ms Mellick was asked about the recent redistribution of the divisions within council boundaries which saw some of the traditional areas split up to accommodate the population percentage and as a result claims that the benefits a divisional council had in the past is no longer there. “When we come to the table we have to make decisions for the whole of the council region not just one division, the benefits of a divisional council has been taken away by the latest boundary changes which are not based on communities of interest they are based on having an even population of voters,” she said. If elected to the position of Mayor at the next election on March 28, Ms Mellick said she would like to bring a level of confidence in terms of consistency of approach, making informed decisions for the greater good, not just for now but into

First seedless Lychee is here
Tibby Dixon his new seedless lychees.
ONE North Queensland farmer has grown what could be considered the holy grail of Lychees. Tibby Dixon has left the traditional path of growing trees solely for fruit, instead, he develops and sells young plants for other farmers to grow. But the pick of the crop is the seedless variety that he has been propagating from a single tree imported from China. “The cultivar variety itself is a medium-sized fruit, with no seed.” Mr Dixon told the ABC “It's very different to all the other cultivars we have.” Mr Dixon, who is based at Sarina Beach near Mackay, has
harvested only a few kilograms of the seedless fruit from the trees this year and has preferred to focus on growing the trees to establish more plants. The ABC reports that Mr Dixon has developed multiple lychee varieties, and the process involves both selective breeding and cross-pollinating flowers by hand over several generations of trees. “First of all you have to start off with a really good cultivar, and then you get on with it and you keep cross-pollinating it," he said. Then somewhere down the line, you get something with a
small seed, and from there you cross-pollinate again. “By chance, you might end up with a seedless lychee.” The variety is still in the early stages of development and is yet to be planted on a commercial scale. Mr Dixon is in the process of growing a crop of trees which will one-day bear fruit on Australian farms. “Within a couple of years we should have enough to sell out in commercial numbers," he told the ABC Mr Dixon's trial varieties are grown until a fruit-bearing age, and then the crop is trialled to

ensure consistent productivity. “It's been a long, hard slog," he said.
WITH just over six weeks left of the annual KP Mango Competition, The Express is seeing a number of monster mangoes sent in for judging. With mangoes as big as one and half kilos coming into the office, this year’s competition is sure to be a juicy one. There is a cash money prize for the first, second and third heaviest mangoes that are entered into the
competition. The KP Mango Competition ends on February 29, 2020, so time is short for locals to send in their possible winners. Entries for the competition must be brought into The Express office and clearly show the weight of the mango on digital scales, the mangoes must also be of the Kensington Pride variety.

SMILE: Baby Fizz with his Quokka family.
Little Fizz speads happiness KURANDA Koala Gardens have a new cute and photogenic attraction. Baby Fizz is a baby Quokka, who is now on display the Kuranda Koala Gardens. Fizz was born about 8 months ago, with the Fizz’s mum, Ber-
occa, being the last Quokka born at the gardens in 2017. Quokkas are only found on some of the smaller islands off the West Australian coast, particularly Rottnest Island, just off Perth, and also Bald Island near Albany. According to animal
keeper Shai Ager, having a baby born in captivity is important as Quokkas are listed as a vulnerable species. “Having a backup breeding population is important as Quokkas are only found in a few spots in Western Australia and if
a bushfire or an invasive predator were introduced it would have damaging effects on the Quokka population” In 2017 they were voted the world’s happiest animal due to their permanent cheeky grin and purportedly a love of selfies
with humans. So where does the name Fizz come from? Wildlife Manager of Kuranda Koala Gardens and Birdworld Kuranda Meg says “We thought it would be cute as his mum’s name is Berocca, and Berocca is a fizzy drink”
The Kuranda Koala Gardens have had Quokkas since 2016 and Fizz is on display in the mixed quokka/koala enclosure, where “he is on public display usually sitting with his mum.” Kuranda Koala Gardens are open from 9am daily.
Seperate state push one step forward THE move to get North Queensland to secede from the rest of Queensland has taken one small step forward with the establishment of a new political party, with plans for North Queensland to separate from the rest of Queensland as one of its main platforms. The Central and North Queensland Party (CNQ) is a newly formed entity between Boot Brisbane in collaboration with the North Queensland State Alliance (formally the North Queensland State Party). The new party is hoping to gain a few seats in the upcoming October state election, foring politicians from both sides of politics to discuss North Queensland divorcing itself from the rest of Queensland. In a statement released by Boot Brisbane explaining why they need to gain seats in state parliament “Only an election outcome that necessitates the formation of minority government can provide such an opportunity. A situation whereby minor parties… that are committed to and have policies in support of separation have the ‘balance of power’ will afford the only possibility of initiating the process.”
of Capricorn provides a natural border. To date the CNQ has submitted an application for incorporation to the Queensland Office of Fair Trading. To secure registration from the Electoral Commission of Queensland, the CNQ must have a minimum of 500 paid up members. To register and join go to cnq.org.au
Bill Bates Co-ordinator and President of Boot Brisbane claims they have some big names supporting their plan including “George Christensen, Bob Katter, Rob Pyne, Senator Matt Canavan and Federal Member for Cairns Warren Entsch” Bill says “it is hard to expect the state's parliament and decision-makers in Brisbane to focus on the northern parts of Queensland, when the state's capital is 2700 km away from its northernmost point. graphically, the distance from Brisbane to Sydney -- 900 km -- is one-third of the distance of Brisbane to Queensland's northern tip.” While others like Pauline Hanson, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Michael Healy are against the idea. One of the biggest hurdles facing the new state believers is the lack of agreement as to where the new state should start. Boot Brisbane believes it should be just south of Bundaberg, Bob Katter believes that the tropic

Australian bushfires – how you can help TO date Australia’s devastating bushfires have claimed over 6 million hectares of land and 27 people have died with that number set to rise over the coming days. On top of this it’s estimated over 500 million native animals have perished along with domestic pets and livestock. It’s at times like these that Aussies are famous for digging deep and helping their fellow Australians. So much help has been flooding in the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has actually asked people to stop donating. "I don't want to appear harsh in any way, but we don't need any more clothes, food, or trucks on our roads, we don't have the warehouse capacity, the people or the time to sort through," Mr Andrews told reporters last week. “We are very grateful... but it's really important that those donations stop because they are diverting resources away from firefighting and providing support to those who are in real need.” He said "what we do need though and what those families need most is monetary donations.” "That way money can be giv-
en to the families and they can make decisions that are much more flexible and local." Mr Andrews pointed to the newly-established Victorian Bushfire Appeal, set up in partnership with Bendigo Bank and The Salvation Army, as a way to help communities. NSW RFS also tweeted a similar request “Our South Coast team has been overwhelmed by generous donations from the community; however we've now reached capacity for donated food and goods” There have also been reports of fake collectors scamming donations on behalf of NSW firefighters. So who do you give to? And how do you know where the money will go?
If you do want to help, below is a list of recognised charities and a description of where your donation will end up. SALVATION ARMY The Salvation Army offers a range of services including financial assistance, emotional wellbeing and support services
and information, referrals and advice for those in need. To donate to The Salvation Army Disaster Appeal, go to salvationarmy.org.au, call 13 SALVOS (13 72 58) or donate at any Woolworths checkout. GIVE IT If you don't have much spare cash but do have useful household items to donate to those affected, GIVIT might be the place to go. Give it asks people and charities what they need and then tries to match up donations with people in need. Go to www. giveit.org.au THE RESCUE COLLECTIVE The Rescue Collective, in conjunction with Animal Rescue Freecycle and Support, is collecting donations on behalf of smaller rescues to help badly burned wildlife that have been impacted by the bushfires. have tragically died in the catastrophic fires, and many need ongoing medical care. “It is impossible to estimate the number of native animals that have already been killed or how many more will be lost in the fires, or to predict the impact that this additional loss of habitat on top of the drought will have on wild populations," ST VINCENTS The St Vincent De Paul Society is also running a bushfire appeal, to help those affected rebuild their lives – with food, clothing, furniture, grocery vouchers and funds to pay bills. The charity is currently running appeals for NSW, Queensland and South Australian bushfire and drought victims. You can donate at any Vinnies store.
RED CROSS The Australian Red Cross is supporting communities affected by fires in NSW, QLD and SA. The charity is calling for cash donations, and it has raised more than $8 million since New Year's Eve. “We appreciate that everybody wants to help, but donating money is a more direct way
to provide cash grants to people who have lost their homes," a spokesman said. “Our specialist emergency volunteers are providing psychological first aid, working at evacuation centres and helping people to get in touch with their loved ones," Red Cross says. You can donate to the Red Cross disaster relief and recovery appeal.
COMMUNITY ENTERPRISE FOUNDATION This appeal is run by Bendigo Bank's charitable arm, and will initially focus on raising funds for communities in East Gippsland, north-east Victoria, southeast NSW and the Adelaide Hills. Bendigo Bank has partnered with Emergency Management Victoria for this appeal, which has already raised more than $2 million. The Victorian government is also directing its donations here. People are being asked to donate cash, as “monetary donations are quicker, more effective and logistically provide far more flexibility than donations of material items or pre-loved goods”.
FIREFIGHTERS Victoria's Country Fire Authority and the NSW Rural Fire Service are running their own donations for those wanting to support the firefighters. They are accepting cash donations only. FOODBANK Cash donations are preferable, but the organisation is also accepting good quality tinned food (with ring pull), UHT milk, and items that are easy to “grab and go” like muesli bars, cereals, biscuits and pantry staples. Foodbank also accepts pet food and personal hygiene products. THE RSPCA Over the past few days, RSPCA has also taken part in evacuations, gathering animals and taking them to safety. But once the active fire zones clear, that’s when the most challenging work begins. The RSPCA Inspectors, working alongside Local Land Services, Department of Primary Industries and district veterinarians, will begin the difficult job of entering affected areas and assessing any injured animals.

Animal Rescue reaches out LOCAL resident Sandy Brown has done her fair share for the disadvantaged and at risk animals that have been victims of abuse, but now she’s putting a call out to the community to give her a hand. Animal Rescue Tablelands Inc. was founded by Mrs Brown in 2012 and is targeted at taking in abused, neglected and abandoned animals as well as owner surrenders. Mrs Brown currently cares for 20 rescued animals at her own property where she can care them in a friendly environment before they find their forever homes. Mrs Brown is pleading to the community for donations to help support the organisation and help with the purchase of a bigger property so she can better provide for the animals she cares for. “I knew I had to purchase a bigger property to care for these

The Seconds Shop, located at 68 Byrnes St is also run by Mrs Brown with all profits going directly to Animal Rescue Tablelands Inc. “Any money from the store that doesn’t go to the running costs of the store go directly to taking care of the needs of the rescues,” she said. “It also goes to help cover all the vet expenses like, de-sexing, vaccinations, microchipping and anything else like that. “At the shop here we accept
anything and everything from appliances, clothes, furniture and anything else really.” Mrs Brown is asking for any
donations that people are willing to give including food for the animals. To donate either walk into

Far North RSPCA Inspector Ben Newman said that “Over the past 12 months a large percentage of our prosecutions have come from the Mareeba area, but we have been prosecuting all over the Far North region. A lot of our complaints seem to come from areas with dense social housing. ” Atherton also made the top 5 of the RSPCA’s name and shame list with 30 registered complaints. Inspector Newman said “Most of the complaints on the Tablelands dealt with duty of care for dogs, this includes dogs that live their life on a chain, in poor living conditions, lack of food, water and untreated disease.” “75 per cent of the time animal negligence came down to money with owners happy to let their pet die naturally rather than seek treatment.” The RSPCA also deals with
MAREEBA has come second on the list of the most complaints recorded by the RSPCA, recording forty animal cruelty or neglect complaints in 2019. The number of complaints across the whole far north region dropped from 977 complaints in 2018 to 889 in 2019. Mareeba came second only to Gordonvale, with 44 registered complaints against the Cairns suburb.

OWNERS of Mareeba Yamaha, Lucy and Kevin Dunn say they are fed up with the increasing crime that is engulfing the Mareeba CBD after their Yamaha Motorcycle store in Byrnes St has been broken into for the third time in less than three weeks. Lucy admits that after 25 years in business, the break-ins were leaving a bad taste in her mouth “We just don’t know what to expect when we get to work anymore. We've been in business for over 25 years and we are fed up. With three break-ins in three weeks, we feel like just closing up and walking away.” The first break-in was on December 13, 2019 with another break-in the very next night. The latest break-in happened about 3.30am on Monday January 6, 2020 after thieves broke in through the Spearman Diesel Workshop. Even though the store has CCTV Kevin admits it’s not a strong enough deterrent “We have footage of these criminals looking at themselves on the TV and they just don’t care. CCTV isn’t a strong enough deterrent, as all they get is a slap on the

livestock issues, but only up to 10 head of animals, anything above 10 heads “is dealt with by Bio-Security Queensland.” In September 2019 Mareeba’s Gerald Benard Hobbler, 26, was convicted of two breaches of the Animal Care and Protection Act after an RSPCA inspector saw how he had neglected his four year old Mastiff, Bundy. The RSPCA received a tip that Bundy had been tethered with a tight chain around his neck. Upon a closer look the inspector saw the dog’s neck had been eaten away by the chain. An interview with Hobbler revealed Bundy’s state of neglect – he was not given a bed because he had chewed one as a puppy, and had been on the chain for three years. “He has never exercised Bundy as he would run away ... he does not let him off the chain as he has tried to run away too many times,”
“Sadly he was later deemed unsuitable for rehoming,” an RSPCA spokesman said. Gerald Hobbler was sentenced to three months imprisonment, to be wholly suspended and was prohibited from owning any dogs for five years and a conviction was recorded. In January of 2019 TammyLey Chong, 26, was ordered to complete 240 hours of community service after RSPCA inspectors found three emaciated and parasite-infested dogs at her Mareeba home. Chong admitted to investigators she 'bit off more than she could chew' and was struggling financially due to her partner being in jail. She said she “could not afford dog food and fed her dogs 30 pies each that she received for free.” All three dogs improved in RSPCA care.

23 arrested in Aurukun
HELP: The family of Bruce Schuler is asking the public to help bring Bruce home.
Pleas to help find Bruce BRUCE Schuler was murdered on a remote Far North cattle station nearly 8 years ago. His widow Fiona Split is still searching for the remains of his body Mr Schuler, was prospecting in a dry gully on Palmerville Station with friends when they became separated, his friends heard two gun shots at around the time that he disappeared. In July 2015 at the Cairns Supreme Court, the station's owners, Stephen Struber and Dianne Wilson-Struber, were found guilty of his murder and with interfering with a corpse. The trial heard that police found drops of Schuler's blood, burnt patches of grass, and tyre marks matching the Strubers' car
in a gully about two kilometres from the homestead. Mr Schulers body or his prospecting equipment have never been found. Late last year his widow Fiona Splitt, along with son Bruce Jnr and sister-in-law Tracey Holland put up four large signs calling for information about the whereabouts of Mr Schuler’s body. Ms Splitt said it took her over a year ago to get the signs erected as she had to get approvals from Police, Department of Transport and Main Roads and Cook Shire Council before they could be installed. The signs have been placed at Whites Creek on the Peninsula
Development Rd, at the intersection of White’s Creek and Palmerville Rds, on Mt Musgrave Rd and Palmerville Rd at Laura and were paid for with Ms Splitt’s own money “Hopefully someone will come forward with some real information," his widow said. ”Someone knows something.” The signs feature a photograph of Mr Schuler wearing the clothes he was last seen in, along with his gold prospecting equipment. Fiona and her family are hoping to gain permission to search Palmerville station from the new owners in the near feature. Ms Splitt and her daughter Lisa Schuler were behind the

Six dwellings were set on fire, sustaining varying degrees of damage including some being destroyed, two other dwellings sustaining fire damage to the outside. Mother of missing man appeals for info THE mother of a man reported missing in the Daintree has appealed for information. Milan Lemic, 25, disappeared on December 22 after his car got stuck at Bairds Crossing near the Upper Daintree Village. “We care deeply about our son and simply wish to know that he’s OK,” Ms Lemic told reporters. “We urge anyone who has seen Milan or who has any information about where he might be to please come forward.” “We are so incredibly thankful for everyone who has helped in the search for Milan.” Extensive searches of the Daintree area failed to locate the man prompting police to suspend the 10-day search last week.
Following a review of information provided about a possible sighting of the man carrying a sports bag on December 26, police and SES volunteers searched an area surrounding Pioneers Park in the Daintree Village again this week. Police continue to urge locals, many who have already searched their properties, to recheck for any indications someone may have sought shelter on their property. Mr Lemic is described as being Caucasian, approximately 191cms tall, with a proportionate build, longer collar length brown hair and unkempt facial hair. If you have information for police, contact Policelink on 131 444.

push of “no body, no parole laws” that came into law in Queensland in 2017. Under the laws, Stephen Struber and Dianne Wilson-Struber will serve out their life sentences in jail unless they reveal where Schuler's body is. CLUB NEWS With Mareeba Lions Since November 2019 we have seen the fire situation across Australia increase into catastrophic proportions. All States have been impacted in some way over this extended period with the current situation as at end of December seeing major fires still burning in NSW, Victoria and South Australia. Many are still out of control and we are seeing new areas impacted daily. This situation is not going away in the short term and we are still only early in the summer season. Since the Lions National Appeal was established, we have received donations from Clubs, businesses and private individuals totalling over $600,000 and we have already disbursed grants to impacted Districts in Queensland ($85K), New South Wales ($160K) and South Australia ($69K) totalling overall to date $312,000. With the most recent devastation throughout the South Coast of New South Wales through to areas of East Gippsland in Victoria, more than 500 properties have been lost impacting whole communities. The needs for these areas are significant and support of Lions through the Australian Lions Foundation will enable recovery assistance to be given. Sadly, a number of lives have been lost including those of Volunteer Fire fighters who have been on the front line fighting these fires. Our thoughts are with all families impacted at this sad time. Mareeba Lions have donated $1,000.00 to the A.L.F. appeal but more will be necessary. Members of the community may also donate direct by using the “GiveNow link” button on the Australian Lions Foundation Website. Or go to; https://www.givenow. com.au/australianlionsfoundation Or; cheques payable to the Australian Lions Foundation can be sent to: Treasurer Austral-
ian Lions Foundation, PO Box 278 Melville, WA 6956. All public donations received over $2 are tax deductible. Please consider supporting this appeal to help those in need. The Australian Lions Foundation is part of Lions Clubs International in Australia. The Foundation is supported by the 1400 Lions Clubs within Australia. It provides direct financial assistance to individuals and organisations through the Lions Clubs in the local areas of need including: •Emergency and Disaster relief (Fires, Floods, Cyclone and Drought). •Compassionate Grants for people in need. Funds are distributed in partnership with our local Lion Clubs, who work with the beneficiaries to manage projects, ensuring that every cent is used in the way that it should be. The Foundation is committed to using the funds quickly and efficiently to help those people in their time of need. $3m has been distributed through the Australian Lions Clubs network in recent years. The Australian Lions Foundation does not charge any administration costs and your total donation will be used to support the relief that you have nominated or may be used in cases of humanitarian or compassionate need. Although membership of Lions is by invitation you are invited to enquire about joining this great international humanitarian organisation. It is not hard to become a Lion. Fellowship, Good times, meeting people, building lasting friendships, service to the community, learning new skills, Leadership and personal development - these are some of the reasons we are the Lions. Lions meet in Mareeba at the Mareeba Leagues Club at 6.30 pm on the first and third Tuesday of the month. Check us out on Facebook or on the web at http://mareeba.qld.lions. org.au

Steven Prowse, otherwise known by his artist name, Matali, is a Ravenshoe based artist who collaborated with Guiseppe ‘Joe’ Vizzone from The Sound Sculptors Studio in the Tinaroo area who helped him compose the album ‘Beautiful’ ‘Beautiful’ is a fusion of Neo-classical, World, New Age and Ambient music genres composed by local tablelands artists and composers from the Ravenshoe and Tinaroo areas. In the past four weeks since its release the album has seen time in both American and European radio stations with the song ‘Merging with the Light’ being added to a Netherlands radio stations top 20 tracks of 2019. Mr Prowse has been composing music for upwards of 30 years but had never done so professionally. “I have been composing music for 30 years but never recorded my music in a professional studio,” he said. “This task was challenging and I recorded 20 tunes, only 13 of these made it onto the album. “The overall time for the album was 18 months, with all the

“The creative process was great fun there was a lot of experimentation in creating the soundscapes that make up the album,” Mr Prowse said. “Creating a musical story line or theme that each tune floats on and takes the listener on a deeply relaxing journey. “Each tune has multiple instruments that all had to be indi-
vidually composed.” Mr Prowse acknowledged the work that Mr Vizzone did in the creation of this album stating, “it was a pleasure working with such an accomplished musician such as Joe.” The album can be purchased at www.matali.bandcamp.com/ releases

Who is your favourite cricket player? Ricky Ponting. What do you like to do before a game to get prepared? Stretching. What’s your favourite part in playing cricket? The banter. What is your Favourite food? My wife’s spaghetti.
ATHERTON have held on to their lead in the Cricket Far North 2-Day competition to claim the minor premiership, despite a disappointing last round loss to Barron River. Barron resumed their batting innings on day two 1-9 and batted to a plan, posting 170 runs before declaring 8 wickets down
after 37 overs. Atherton's bowlers worked hard, sharing the wickets before Tom Boorman took control claiming 4 wickets in steady succession. Atherton's batsmen failed to fire and were punished for poor choices as Barron sent six of the top order off for 33 runs. Caleb Constant and Dylan Pet-
tingill batted patiently, bringing some respectability to the score with a valuable 71 run partnership. Dylan went on to celebrate a "50", supported by Mason Blaney who contributed with an unbeaten 14 runs off 20 balls before running out of partners. Result: Atherton 136 (D Pettingill 53, C Constant 27, C

MAREEBA Thirds have had a successful return to cricket after the Christmas break with a win over leaders Mulgrave Kerala at Borzi Park on Saturday. The home side was sent into the field on a hot day with the visitors looking to get ahead early with the threat of rain looming.
However their plans were slowed by Mareeba’s opening barrage; claiming three wickets within the first four overs, the visitors were looking shaky being 3/15 after the opening spells. Some tight bowling and fielding by Mareeba succeeded in getting the leaders all out for 106. Mareeba went out with some
intent, aiming for bonus points in the run chase. Openers Jett Prien and Paul Moss got the ball rolling with Jarrod France coming in at three with a healthy 29 to help the home side get closer to their goal. The winning runs were hit by Rowan Foxwell and helped Ma-
reeba score double bonus points with them getting the runs in just 17.5 overs, Mareeba finished on 5/107. Mareeba thirds will return to Borzi Park this Saturday to play Barron Blue and Mareeba seconds will have their first game of 2020 playing Tully at home on Sunday.

Gladiators greet new season WITH the new year underway the Mareeba Gladiators are looking to dust off their boots and hit the upcoming season hard. With President Bevan Carroll at the helm the Mareeba Gladiators are looking to push off of last year’s success and stamp their name in the Cairns District Rugby League ladder. With many divisions including U18’s, Reserve Grade, A grade and a new women’s division, 2020 is looking good for the Gators. The U18 side will be under Bryce Morgan, Reserve Grade will be coached by Cameron McPherson, and the new ladies side has been taken on by Edwardine Gutchen Gela Grogan with returning Captain/Coach Trent Barnard looking after the A Grade side. Mr Barnard is excited for the upcoming season and what it may bring. “I’m pretty excited for the upcoming season, we’re not starting as slow as we did last year,” he said. Mr Barnard is excited to have a good mix of local boys in 2020. “We have a new A Grade side with a good mix of local boys and out of town talent. “There are more local boys playing in this season’s side than
last season’s so that’s good to see. “Even a few of my old players from Ivanhoes are coming up so it will be good to link up with them again.” Mr Barnard looked back on last season and is confident that with the current side, a premiership is within their grasp. “I’d be kidding myself if I didn’t say we are aiming for the grand final this year,” he said. “I don’t think I’ll be doing too much coaching, we’ve got a really good, experienced senior side. “We’ve got the team to do it we’ve just got to get there.” Gladiators president Bevan Carroll is feeling confident in his role and about the season. “I’m feeling confident that we can really make a difference this year,” he said. “There is a lot of potential in the club and we can really do something good with it.” Mr Carroll hasn’t forgotten the supporters and is looking forward to great turnouts in the season. “I would like to thank everyone who has supported us and count on them for their continued support. “I would like to see some of the old faces out and showing

their support.” The Gladiators started sharpening their swords at their first
training yesterday, Tuesday January 14 and are looking fierce ahead of a trail match in mid-
March. A Grades trial match will be against the Atherton Roosters on
their turf followed by another trail match against Brothers at home.
Bulls get season ready
Forward Adam Molloy is back at training and will make a welcome return for the roosters.
Molloy makes return THE Atherton Senior Roosters have completed their first week of pre-season training as they prepare for the coming 2020 Cairns District Rugby League year. While the bulk of last years players are back on the training paddock there have been a few welcome additions including former Roosters first grade player of the year Adam Molloy.
Molloy missed the 2019 season due to a knee injury obtained while playing in the 2018 finals but is now expected to be fully fit for the new season. He is a noted workhorse and adds plenty to the forward mix in 2020. New to the league this year is the ladies tackle competition which will be played during round one along side the mens premiership games.

This week training is again on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium with the ladies at 5pm and the three mens teams at 6pm. The Senior Roosters play trial games on March 7, 14 and 21 before hosting Ivanhoes in the 2020 premiership opener on April 4.
THE Mareeba United Football Club has commenced preseason training in all senior divisions. Head coach Angelo Tatti, who was appointed late last year, together with his assistant Mario Terranova are looking to whip the boys and girls into shape with a vigorous preseason program. “Getting into shape early is vital,” Coach Tatti said. “Picking up those early wins sets the platform for the season ahead so fitness is paramount. “We will initially all train together, Prems, reserves, youth, second division and both ladies divisions. “We will be looking at a top four finish and what happens after that will be bonus, we have a very good mix of youth and experience and we will be looking at utilising and blooding more of our youth players while managing them sensibly so they can play across the divisions.” he said. The Mareeba United Football Club committee members, volunteers and sponsors were quite busy over the festive period with field levelling and new irrigation installed on field three which should be ready before competition starts in March. Players are reminded that training begins at 7pm Tuesdays and Thursdays and all past present and new players are welcome to come along. There is a level for fun and fitness no matters what age and all will be accommodated.
Bulls head coach Angelo Tatti is confident of a productive season.
