bid for greater electoral representation in regional Qld has been denied by the Palaszczuk Government and the Independent Member for Cook, Billy Gordon. Katter’s Australia Party crossbenchers Shane Knuth (pictured) and Robbie Katter saw their private members bill Electoral (Improving Representation) and Another Act Amendment Bill 2015 deadlocked after support from the LNP, until Mr Gordon’s vote sealed the bill’s defeat. The bill was designed to increase the number of MP’s in state politics from 89 to 93 - with four additional seats spread across regional and remote areas - in a bid to improve resources and services for the bush. In terms of other remaining Far North MP’s, Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt, Member for Barron River, Craig Crawford and Member for Cairns Rob Pyne all voted against the bill. The result has dire consequences for all regional electorates, with between three and four seats set to be either culled or merged prior to the next election. MP numbers will remain at 89, with the re-allocation of seat distribution set to be spread across south east Qld. Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth was naturally disappointed with the deci-

sion, with the fate of his electorate currently unclear. “We are determined to see the interests of rural and regional Qld advanced,” he said. “This re-distribution is going to take us back to the point where it is an insult. “Up to three or four seats will disappear – which will also allow for further expansion of electorates in Brisbane.” The current situation has a sense of déjà vu for Mr Knuth, who had a similar situation occur during 2009. After being elected to the seat of Charters Towers in 2004, Mr Knuth was required to run for the then new seat of Dalrymple in 2009, after his seat was abolished. CONTINUED PAGE 3

Mareeba Animal Refuge reach $50,000 target

All smiles: Jennifer Walsh, Felicity Pollard and Vera Schulz are still coming to terms with the fantastic response from the Mareeba community.

By Justin Fris

A melodic chorus of hearty dog barking rang around the Mareeba Animal Refuge last Saturday morning. All the pets have good reason for being upbeat, with the refuge managing to raise $50,000 in 50 days to keep its doors open. For Mareeba Animal Refuge manager Jennifer Walsh, last Thursday evening provided an emotive occasion for

the welcomed news. “It was really the Bendigo Bank 10th birthday party night,” she said. “Last Wednesday night, we were sitting just over $48,000 – which included what the Bendigo Bank had raised for us. “During the afternoon and on the night of the party, there were some people who came in and donated some large amounts; and Mareeba Leagues Club came out with a $500 donation at the end of the night, which was on top

of the $500 they donated at Kerri Redding’s fundraiser.” Ms Walsh added: “Kerri Redding raised around $6000 in funding for us through the selling of her artwork. “We’ve just been blown away by the way that the community has come together and supported us. We just can’t believe it – It’s really warmed our hearts.” Christmas is a busy period for the facility, however with the weight of financial pain somewhat loosened, stress has melted and turned into beaming smiles.

HUNDREDS of Year 6 children across the Tablelands made their first transition into secondary school life last Wednesday morning. In a fantastic concept of fostering confidence and unity, students from a raft of local primary schools attended Mareeba State High School, where they were able to meet their new classmates and teachers for 2016. ‘MSHS Transition Day’ co-ordinator Terry Mc-

Clelland said the day was all about easing transition and making the new students feel welcome in a new setting. “We have been really excited by the co-operation of the concept by all of our feeder schools,” he said. “The day is all about building relationships – with the students able to meet 25 of our teaching staff, along with our 2016 student leaders.” MSHS Principal Scott Whybird added that there was excellent

camaraderie between the students – with one student even travelling from Gordonvale for the event. “Today, we’ve had students come in from Walkamin, Biboohra, Mutchilba – and even Gordonvale,” he said. “There have also been a few students from St Thomas’s Parish School as well.” The students were exceptionally behaved throughout the experience, which clearly warmed enthusiasm for the new schooling year.

Knuth’s battle will continue FROM PAGE 1

He has since recorded victories in Dalrymple three times (2009, 2012 and 2015) and said he would continue to consult with constituents within his area to ensure that he can continue his political career. Liberal National Party opposition leader Lawrence Springborg told The Express that he was concerned about the bill’s outcome. “I think that many constituents within regional and remote areas of Qld are going to be disappointed that their electorates are going to be cannibalised,” he said. “If you start to lose regional seats and those remaining become larger, they naturally become difficult to represent – and regional Qld’s voice is muted more and more.” KAP leader and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter said he believed the outcome was a result of major political parties having little regard for regional electorates. “Last week, I phoned the Member for Mt Isa Robbie Katter and he was in Birdsville,” he said. “I then rang again six days later and he was in Burketown. “The fact that they expect a member of parliament to cover such a distance in a motor car is absolutely outrageous. “I mean, for some members in the south east, they can walk around their entire electorate in a day.” Mr Katter said he would speak with both KAP crossbenchers about putting forward a bill to allow Cape York to have its own seat – a move which could shrink the Cook electorate’s size. “It would give the First Australians of Cape York tremendous empowerment,” he said. He added: “There are people in parliament who are absolutely fanatical about ousting me (and the KAP) from parliament. This is because I’m their conscience. “We are doing the things that the two major political parties don’t have the courage to do and we are taking the fight to them. “We’ve had scenarios like this one hundred times before. If they can’t get in through the front door, they will try through the back door.” Both the Palaszczuk Government and Mr Gordon have made no public comment on the bill.

Maryann Salvetti (Tableland Canegrowers), Billy Gordon, Bronwyn Dwyer (Tableland Canegrowers) and Peter Sheedy (Herbert River Canegrowers) after the vote.

Celebration for cane growers after new Bill By Justin Fris CANEGROWERS across Queensland celebrated into the wee hours last Thursday morning, off the back of some long awaited history. The Katter’s Australia Party -inspired Queensland Sugar Industry (Real Choice in Marketing) Amendment Act 2015 private members bill received support from the Liberal National Party, along with the Independent Member for Cook, Billy Gordon. It was only the eighth time that a private members bill had been successfully passed in Qld state parliament history – but lobbying for its support was anything but easy. The bill was created to give farmers across Qld complete choice and freedom on how their sugar is marketed. Members of the Palaszczuk Government were staunchly opposed to the bill, believing that foreign investment opportunities could be stifled. So much so, that not one representative of the Palaszczuk Government (or Independent Peter Wellington) saw fit to throw their support towards the bill. Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth said the result of the bill was a ‘special moment’ in his parliamentary career. “Last night truly was a special moment in my political career, in being able to help get the bill over the line; and negotiating the passage with both the support from the LNP and Independent Member for Cook,” he said. “I have almost 100 per cent of support from canegrowers across the state on the issue and last Wednesday night was no exception. The gallery was absolutely packed during the evening, with canegrowers from all across the state (including representatives from Tableland Canegrowers)

showing their support.” Mr Knuth added that the bill had received timely support from the LNP via the tweaking of amendments to ensure its effectiveness; and he was confident the bill would last the test of time. Tableland Canegrowers manager Bronwyn Dwyer said that the bill would be welcomed by growers across the Tablelands. “It was an extremely significant result,” she said. “Not only for the Tablelands, but for the entire industry. “To have choice of marketing and precontract arbitration means that our growers can continue to invest in the industry. “If we didn’t see this outcome, and were forced to market with the millers, there would have been divestment by the growers in the industry.” She added: “It was KAP who put the bill together and they put a lot of work into it and Tableland Canegrowers put a lot of work into it with them. “And with the LNP’s support in making a few amendments to strengthen, it did that. But the vote in the end all came down to the our local Member for Cook, Billy Gordon; and we are delighted that he supported us with this issue.” Agricultural Minister Bill Byrne lambasted the LNP’s role in the bill and said that the Palaszczuk Government would refer the matter to the ACCC. “Foreign investors have come in and invested in a deregulated industry and now the parliament has turned around and reregulated that industry and significantly degraded their ownership rights,” he said. “Anyone with any common sense would see these legislative changes will send the wrong message to those countries we have signed free trade agreements with.”

Familiarisation begins at Mareeba State School By Justin Fris THE overall student experience continues to go from strength to strength at primary schools across the Tablelands. Last Wednesday, students and staff (current and prospective) at Mareeba State School were able to get insight into their 2016 classroom arrangements. Students were informed of their new classmates and were able to participate in lessons with their 2016 teacher. For incoming staff like Ms Naomi Cruss - who will teach Year 6 - it gave her a chance to familiarise herself with her new environment. The process of allocating children into

their new classes has been a lengthy, but extremely beneficial process. MSS Principal Mandy Whybird explained that management engaged in discussion with teachers and parents, in a bid to ensure that all classes were compatible as possible. Mrs Whybird added that she is delighted that so many of the new staff have already exhibited a high level of dedication. “It’s lovely to see how so many of them have decided to visit so early and say hello,” she said. “We even had one of our new teachers fly up from the Sunshine Coast last week – just to say hello and familiarise themselves with both the school and children.”

Seminar for prospective recruits By Justin Fris

PROSPECTIVE police recruits participated in an engaging educational seminar last Wednesday evening at the Mareeba PCYC. Primarily facilitated by Acting Senior Constable Aleda Robbins, the audience were given an insight into the various testing and character requirements of joining the Queensland Police Service. This was followed by a special ceremony last Thursday, when serving officers were formally acknowledged for their excellence. The seminars – which have been held in a variety of locations across the Far North – have been healthily attended, which is extremely encouraging. A/Snr Con Robbins said there were a variety of important qualities that the police service looks for in potential recruits. “Recruits must have a Year 12 certificate or equivalent,” she said. “They must have a driver licence (either open or P), with a minimum of 12 months driving experience. “Additionally, you must be an Australian resident, demonstrate a reasonable degree of aerobic fitness, and they must be physically and mentally fit to undertake the duties of a constable.” Once these pre-application criteria have been addressed, a prospective recruit is required to undergo a variety of character and psychological components. These include: verification of supporting documentation, reference checks, psychological testing, a panel interview and an ‘Applied Policing Skills’ assessment. A/Snr Con Robbins said there were several benefits to working as a police officer on the Tablelands, with these benefits translating into opportunities across the state. “You get to be part of a great community; and the ability to build

CLEALL’S

Queensland Liberal Senator Ian McDonald has informed the Mareeba Shire Council that Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss will provide a further $5 million dollar grant for the upgrade of Mareeba’s Airport. This, together with the $13 million already provided by the State Government through the ‘Royalties for Regions’ program, will bring the total available funds for the upgrade to $18 million. Work will finally begin on the upgrade of the Mareeba Airport before Christmas, as the Mareeba Shire Council has awarded the tender for the ground clearing of the western lease area to Dun-Movin’ Earthworks. At a cost of just under $85,000, the initial clearing of the land surrounding the airport

will pave the way for the first phase of the construction process. Mayor Tom Gilmore said: “Council is proceeding with the redevelopment of the Mareeba airport; and part of this redevelopment project is the construction of an extension to the western leased area at the airport off Ray Road. “The primary intention is to clear the western area of Ray Road of its vegetation, rocks and soil. All earth and rock mounds are to be cleared to natural ground level,” Mayor Gilmore said. “This tender represents the first stage in this important development. “Mareeba Shire Council has been fortunate in obtaining a grant for $13 million from the

Pyne and ratepayers outline further concerns THE Member for Cairns, Rob Pyne, has tabled further documentation in parliament regarding alleged inappropriate activity across several local councils in Queensland. Mr Pyne – who has copped a fearful amount of disapproval from several of his Palaszczuk Government constituents – is maintaining his push for an official inquiry into local government practices across the state. “Since October, I have been contacted by numerous residents from across Queensland, who have supported the call for an inquiry into council corruption. “These people have supplied my office with a significant amount of new material, some of which I tabled in parliament today.” Local Tablelands Regional Council ratepayers Lyn O’Conner and Jason Ward also attended the parliamentary sitting with Mr Pyne; and said all they wanted was to ‘stop the harm’ for people who allegedly have been on the end of unwanted

actions or behaviour across Qld. “Councils owe a duty of care to their staff and the number of people who have been dismissed and damaged because of the bullying and toxic nature of certain councils,” Mr Pyne added. On Friday, both Local Government Association of Qld president Margaret de Wit and Deputy Premier Jackie Trad slammed Mr Pyne on the issue. Ms de Wit said: “It’s entirely inappropriate for Mr Pyne to make baseless allegations that reflect on all 578 elected members in the local government system in Queensland,” she said. “He is not the Crime and Corruption Commission, he is not the Ombudsman, he is not the Department of Local Government and he is not the Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal.” Ms Trad said: “I am advised that it is not considered necessary to take any further action in respect of any of the allegations made by the Member for Cairns in October,” she said.

Queensland Government ‘Royalties for Regions’ Program to create a regional aviation based industrial precinct – with a further $5 million of funding announced late last week. “We anticipate that over the next five to 10 years, there will be a number of businesses established here – which will serve to broaden our shires economic base and to provide for job and training opportunities for our community,” Mayor Gilmore said. “I expect the work to begin immediately and once the site is cleared final design and survey can be undertaken. The next stage will follow after the wet season and I anticipate that the full development will be completed during 2016,” he said.

Thank you to all for supporting the Salvation Army I am writing on behalf of The Salvation Army to thank your readers for their generous support of The Salvation Army. So many people give the Salvos a hand and in the lead up to Christmas we ask people to please be generous, because there are so many Aussies doing it tough - we believe no one should go it alone. Disturbing research that Roy Morgan has just undertaken for the Salvos reveals over 18 per cent of people (equivalent to 2.7 million people aged 18 to 64) say they know at least five families who will experience financial hardship and poverty this Christmas. 24.9 per cent of people in our survey (equivalent to 3.7 million) say they are worried about how they will pay for Christmas this year. Over 71 per cent of people in the research (equivalent to 10.6 million) say the gap between rich and poor has been getting bigger. It has never been a more critical time to donate to the Salvos to help Aussies in need. This Christmas we expect to help around 300,000 Australians needing a hand. Australia is a nation of people that stands by those in need. By donating $29 to the Salvos’ Christmas Appeal, people can help put a present under the tree and food on the table for a family that would go without. For those facing poverty, Christmas is a deeply isolating time. We ask your readers to look around for people who might need help or to reach out to the Salvos if they or a loved one need support. Community let down by wind farm approval Both the State and Federal Governments have let down the community living in the area around the Mt Emerald wind turbine site. The state permit conditions are so badly written; they have no teeth. They have been described by experts as the worst in Australia and will protect no one. The local council isn’t off the hook either. It will be responsible for enforcing many of the poorly written wind farm permit conditions. And who pays? The costs of ensuring the wind farm complies will be shouldered by council ratepayers. RATCH, the project developer, still has a long way to go. Its four years of studies are worthless - because even now - it can’t show how this sensitive mountain-top environment can be protected, whilst constructing and operating this giant industrial wind turbine facility. Elsewhere, wind farms are built on already degraded farming land, not uncleared environmental refuges. Elsewhere, they are built in remote locations where there are few people and not in the middle of intensively

farmed and populated areas. RATCH hasn’t done its homework properly. It makes no sense. Wouldn’t it have been far easier for the developer to have chosen a location which isn’t near 2500 people, a prison and an environmentally sensitive area? B. Christian, Mutchilba

Pool safety upgrade over the top Surely every thinking person in Queensland must see this recent ‘upgrade’ to pool fencing laws as a blatant example of bureaucracy interfering in our lives, and imposing unnecessary expenses on the ever-suffering rate payers. I live on a rural property on the banks of Emerald Creek – I do not have town water. Emerald Creek flows beautifully and peacefully about 50 metres from my back door; and, shock, horror, it is not fenced. Nor does it have approved resuscitation charts appropriately distributed on each side of its banks. My pool is about a 10 minute drive from town. All the blocks here are at least two acres, so the neighbours are not close and I have never observed any small kids trying to climb over my 5 foot high boundary fence, and then over my previously approved pool fence, in the 20 years I have been here. Why do I have to pay an inspection fee and then another amount for any defects the inspector happens to think he has found? How many people in Australia have drowned after actually climbing over a pool fence? I suspect very few, but this figure is never released. There is only one way to stop the drowning of children in backyard pools and that is called ‘vigilant parental supervision’. What we desperately need is for all levels of government to stop interfering in our lives and putting more and more costs onto the public. Peter Beatts, MAREEBA

YOU’RE INVITED

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce invites all partners, members, businesses and the local community to the 2015

Government’s fail to listen I have read all the comments and by the sounds of it, everyone, including the Labor and Federal Government, have their heads in the sand about the wind farms. You have not listened and you have not taken into account the 92 per cent of people who objected against this; as well as the health of everyone living in the 4.5km radius of the propose placement of the turbines, which will result in a decrease in the value of our homes. Day by day, we are losing more and more wildlife around the world, due to our selfishness of materialistic investments that are made only seeing what benefits it will have to us, not realizing the greatness of the impact of the wildlife and nature surrounding us. The large population of quails that live here (and brolgas that fly over the hills) will end in being like the hundreds of eagles killed in America each year, because of flying into the 50m wide turbines. This is just a greedy bunch of people who do not care about anything but their pockets. My family and I (along with approximately 360 other people) all moved to Rangeview for the peace and quiet, and the beauty of the surroundings of the Atherton Tablelands. I have lived on the Tablelands for 60 years and never have I heard of a proposal so ridiculous. Hooray for Rio Tinto in Weipa who are the ones with common sense putting in a solar farm. How about a hydro scheme installed from the billions of water that is wasted out to sea each year. Like Bob Katter once said: “They should put them up at Hughenden where they really need them badly.” Darryl Drury, Rangeview

Ravenshoe’s festive cheer vandalised SENSELESS violence from a group of vandals saw Ravenshoe’s main Christmas Tree destroyed last week. In a year which has truly rocked Ravenshoe, a notable omission of festive furniture has angered many in the town. Goodwill from some passing ‘Grey Nomads’ have seen the tree’s health temporarily restored, although many wonder if the vandals will strike again. Originally located in the main street over several years, a decision was made two years ago to relocate the tree to a nearby park. In the past two years, the trees have had their greenery ripped from branches and there have even been sightings of used condoms stuffed inside the tree itself. Authorities are hopeful that the vandals will dissapate over the festive season.

‘Nipper’ Brown, Kevin Davies, Mary Graham, Karen Ewin, Allan Holmes and Alan Pedersen are all part of a council candidate team for the 2016 MSC election.

Communication error By Carl Portella A split may have already begun to appear in a new councillor team running for office in the Mareeba Shire Council elections next year. As we reported in our November 18 edition, five sitting councillors, including: Allan Holmes, Nipper Brown, Karen Ewin, Mary Graham and Alan Pedersen (together with newcomer Kevin Davies) came out informing the public of their intention to run as a unified team. Within a week of the story breaking, two members of the team, Karen Ewin and Allan Holmes, (and to a lesser extent, Nipper Brown) were encouraging current MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore to run for council. This was in total contrast to what their spokespersonAlan Pedersen told The Express a week earlier, when he said: “We are not endorsing anyone for the position of Mayor; this team will fully support whoever is voted into the position.” When asked about the possible split, Cr Pedersen was unaware what the sitting councillors were up to. “We did decide that we would back any Mayor that was to be elected to the position in March next year. “The team would not be endorsing anyone in particular, but I understand that being part of Tom Gilmore’s team at the last election, that they would want to put his

name forward.” Cr’s Allan Holmes and Karen Ewin both reiterated that under no circumstance was there any consensus that individuals (councillors) be gagged about who they would like to see run for the mayoral position. “Karen and I were part of the Gilmore team at the last election; yes we would like to see him run again but again, we will work with and support whoever wins the mayoral position at the next election” said Councillor Holmes On the other hand, Councillor Nipper Brown echoed the sentiments of Alan Pedersen, when he told The Express: “I will support whoever is voted to the position of Mayor at the next election. “I don’t think it’s fair to unsettle councillors Mary Graham and Alan Pedersen, who were members of another team; or Kevin Davies, who didn’t have a team.” “I have not spoken to any media outlet about this, other than today with The Express. I don’t know where the quote in the Murdoch newspaper came from, (as) no one from that organisation spoke directly to me.” Cr Brown said. With just over three months to the election, there is ample time for the team to kiss and make up and show a united front come election time.

Rex Budd Memorial Park opening

The Rex Budd Memorial Park will be officially opened by Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore on Saturday, December 19, at the Mareeba airport. Almost 12 months in the making, the park is now ready. Chris Atkinson – who instigated the project – has been overwhelmed by the financial support he has received from people in the community and those who knew Rex (pictured above). The day will feature a flyover by NQ Joy Flights in an Albatross jet fighter and a wreath laying ceremony by the RAAF Air Cadets. In attendance will be Rex’s brother Arthur and his niece Ann, together with other members of the Budd family and former colleagues including Kerry Slingsby and Mike Tully. The community is invited to attend the ceremony, which will commence at 10am.

The Rex Budd Memorial Park will be officially opened by MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore on Saturday, December 19. Pictured here is a new plaque, which has been installed as a fitting tribute to both Rex and the Budd family.

Great movies over the school holidays The holidays are almost here and Christmas is only weeks away. The Rising Sun in Mareeba is into the mood of the season, with two great family holiday movies starting this week . New on screen is the HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 and a delightful Christmas family film LOVE THE COOPERS. Staring a great cast which includes John Goodman and Diane Keaton – both rated PG and great family viewing. Continuing for a second fantastic week is the sci-fi fantasy ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING. It's excellent fun leading into the holidays and has had terrific reviews.

The Drac pack is back for an all-new monster comedy adventure in Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 2. Everything seems to be changing for the better at Hotel Transylvania... Dracula’s rigid monster-only hotel policy has finally relaxed, opening up its doors to human guests. But behind closed coffins, Drac is worried that his adorable half-human, half-vampire grandson, Dennis, isn’t showing signs of being a vampire. So while Mavis is busy visiting her human in-laws with Johnny - and in for a major cultural shock of her own “Vampa” Drac enlists his friends Frank, Murray, Wayne and Griffin to put Dennis through a “monster-in-training” boot camp. But little do they know that Drac’s grumpy and very old, old, old school dad Vlad is about to pay a family visit to the hotel. And when Vlad finds out that his great-grandson is not a pure blood - and humans are now welcome at Hotel Transylvania - things are going to get batty.

ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING

In order to determine if they should destroy the Earth or not, eccentric aliens endow Neil Clarke (Simon Pegg), an unassuming teacher in North London, with the ability to make absolutely anything he wishes for happen. Once Neil realizes he has these new special powers, it takes him a few goes to get the hang of it, while the aliens are watching. Review by Louise Keller: Some wonderfully madcap ideas are wasted in this jumbled mess of a film that plays a bit like a sitcom at which everything except the kitchen sink is thrown. It's a real shame because I love the sense of ridiculous that Terry Jones' Monty Python brand of humour offers - a mix of puerile and black. The film plays out like a series of skits that offers a few chuckles here and there, but in the final analysis falls faultily flat and is frightfully forgettable. Everything hangs around Simon Pegg's sweet but hapless school teacher and would-be writer Neil, who cannot score on any level - at work or at play. He is unable to control his unruly students, get on the right side of his headmaster, get his book written and most importantly, get the girl. The girl is Neil's downstairs neighbor Catherine (Kate Beckinsale) who is seemingly fielding potential suitors from all directions. Grant, the gun-crazy American colonel played by Rob Riggle is the most visible and irritating, while Beckinsale lacks the comedic flair that would make her presence soar. By contrast, Joanna Lumley knows all about comedy and her cameo is far too short. The action flits back and forth between colourful, lumpy aliens in outer space (voiced by the Monty Python team), and a series of unlikely mishaps by Neil's clueless random earthling, as selected by the aliens.

LOVE THE COOPERS

Four generations of the Cooper family come together for their annual Christmas Eve celebration. As the evening unfolds, a series of unexpected visitors and surprising revelations turn the night upside down, leading to a rediscovery of family bonds and the spirit of holiday.

The LAND Don Murray accepts his award at the 2015 Australian Organic Annual Awards.

Dimbulah farmer wins During the acceptance of his award, Mr Murray paid tribute to the scores of people who’ve been involved in ‘Nature’s Haven’ over the journey. “This recognition is testament to the hard work put in by many people over the last 15 years, resulting in the success that ‘Nature’s Haven’ is today. I’m thrilled to receive this honour.” A man thoroughly passionate about agriculture – Don acquired tertiary qualifications in agriculture at an early age; with held him in good stead for future success.

Holding a variety of roles throughout the agricultural industry, he has an excellent comprehension for people, the land and quality produce. ‘Nature’s Haven’ focuses primarily on organic vegetables, with a solid emphasis of five ‘core product’ lines of produce. Additionally, there are four ancillary lines – with Don also keeping an open mind for future product expansion. Research has always played a massive backbone in his success; success through expansion, produce and through a happy workforce.

Farmers get in on mango competition As mango farmers continue to nurture their prized crops for this year’s inaugural Total Food Network KP mango competition, some areas have already completed harvesting, while others have not yet begun. Farmers across the region have been invited to participate in the competition, which is to seek the heaviest KP (Kensington Pride) mango since it was announced a few months ago. One of the areas to have already finished harvesting for the year is Georgetown, where Glen and Aileen Bookall from ‘Gilbert Gold’ left the

best until last, as they picked their biggest mango. The first of the season’s KP’s weighed in at 1.036 kg from the Georgetown area – an excellent start to the competition. The Dimbulah area has just begun harvesting, while Mareeba will come on line just before Christmas - so keep an eye out for the big one. The only remaining evidence of the first mango in the competition is the photo. As per the competition rules, the fruit has now been consumed by the editor.

DIMBULAH farmer Don Murray was recently awarded the 2015 ‘Farmer of the Year’ at the Australian Organic annual awards. Mr Murray was formally recognised for contributing 15 years of quality service to the Australian organic industry – with his sustainable farming practices, product quality, innovative marketing and staff rapport also taken into account.

The Georgetownbased mango weighed in at 1.036 kg.

The LAND Cape York carbon farming advances

State KAP crossbenchers Robbie Katter and Shane Knuth.

Breakthrough on biofuels By Justin Fris THE Katter’s Australia Party have finally achieved success in their long running battle to attain an ethanol mandate in Queensland. After long pressing for a mandate on ethanol both at federal and state level, the KAP’s wish finally appears to have come to pass. Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth – one of two KAP crossbenchers who have laboured hard on the matter – said the decision was extremely beneficial for the bush. “At the heart of ethanol production are generations of Australian wheat, sugar and grains farmers – more than 5,000 of them across the country,” he said. “Ethanol is not only a clean, renewable home-grown fuel; it can help Queenslanders

save money at the pump. This is without a doubt a win for all.” Palaszczuk Government Energy Minister Mark Bailey agreed that the mandate would be beneficial for jobs. “The bill passed by Parliament includes an initial three per cent ethanol mandate for petrol and a half a per cent bio-based diesel mandate with both due to start on January 1, 2017,” Mr Bailey said. “These mandates will stimulate economic growth and jobs and encourage investment in the biofuels and bio-manufacturing industries, while maintaining consumer choice. In practical terms, the mandate will require E10 to make up 30 per cent of regular petrol sales in Queensland in 2017.” He added: “New types of bio-based fuels that may be developed in the future will

also count toward the mandate, further helping to stimulate investment and innovations in Queensland’s biotechnology sector,” he said. “That will diversify our economy, help create of regional jobs and new, high value knowledge-intensive industries. LNP Shadow Energy Minister Andrew Powell said that he was pleased that both the LNP and KAP had effectively ‘forced the hand’ of the Palaszczuk Government. “The LNP Opposition was active in forcing the Palaszczuk Government’s hand in May, introducing a motion calling on Labor to act on this issue,” he said. “Regional communities will now enjoy opportunities for economic growth and job creation, through an alternative and stable market for grain, cane and other feedstocks.”

Steers hit the big 301c/kg at cattle sales THE EXPRESS reports agents yarded 448 cattle at the Mareeba Saleyards on Tuesday, December 1, which was up 50 from the previous sale. A magical moment occurred last week, with steers finally realising above 300c/kg. Despite the perils of drought, this at least brought minor

joy to local graziers. Lighter yearling (under 200kg) steers sold well, with 8 D3 scores topping 301.2c/kg. Along with this, another line of 9 D3 scores (200300kg) made 298.2c/kg ($643.26). Heavier cows eased substantially, with 2 C4 scores reaching 203.2 c/kg ($1,153.16).

Midweight heifer types sold well, with 4 D4 scores realising 265.2c/ kg. Lighter bulls gained some prominence and sold to a top of 265.2c/kg. Midweight types shed significantly however, with 8 D3 scores realising 249.2c/kg ($960.96). To nominate your cattle, call the Mareeba Saleyards on 0457 489 185.

CARBON farming practices are ticking along nicely in Cape York - improving the quality of land and vegetation in the region, according to the Independent Member for Cook, Billy Gordon. “The Queensland Government has to step up and look at off-setting their emissions through purchasing carbon credit units that these practical, land-based projects offer,” he said. “Traditional-owners, indigenous rangers and pastoralists will continue to look after their country and play a vital role in the quest to address a global environmental issue. “The Australian Government has made a significant investment announcement of about $36 million in carbon-farming and we would welcome a similar contribution by the Queensland Government soon.” Sustainable carbon farming projects on land within the aboriginal communities of Aurukun and Kowanyama have made significant achievements, and most recently were successful in their auction bids to supply Australian Carbon Credit Units, through the Australian government’s Emissions Reduction Fund.

Bandits punish Innisfail at Kerribee Park By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba Bandits Cricket Club cruised to a 154 run victory over Innisfail last Sunday afternoon at a sweltering Kerribee Park. Resuming at 0/2 and chasing 254 for victory on the final day, the visitors failed to master a superior bowling attack from the off and were skittled for a paltry 110.

The hosts were fantastic in the field, with three run outs complimenting their extremely balanced bowling display. Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams (3/30 off 12 overs) Lachlan Ford (2/12 off 11 overs) and Peter Becke (0/1, two maidens off three overs) led the way for their side. Mareeba will travel to Atherton next Sunday afternoon.

PAGE 26 The Express, Wednesday, December 9, 2015

THE Mareeba United Football Club will be hosting a series of school holiday clinics, which will be held between Monday, December 14 and Thursday, December 17 at Borzi Park. This exciting program will be both co-ordinated and overseen by MUFC’s Premier coach and FNQ Football Premier Mens ‘Coach of the Year’, Alex Srhoj. This enjoyable development programme for 9 to 11 year olds (along with 12 to 14 year old boys and girls) is designed to further develop the individual player’s skill and overall football ability.

Program sessions includes: first touch, creativity, decision making, game reading, communication, game speed, game cleverness, leadership, ball possession transition and opponent observation. “It is great to be able to work with the kids away from everything else; gives them something new to learn and develop, but have fun at the same time,” Srhoj said. Availability for the sessions is still open, so if you would like to register your child or require more information, please email Alex Srhoj via: alex@mareebabulls. com or phone 0403 343 692.

Finn swims for a cause By Justin Fris

MAREEBA’s own Finnian Weaver swam for two quality reasons last Saturday at the Mareeba Swimming Club. Firstly, it served as an ideal preparation for a special challenge that awaits him in 2016 – a daunting 27km swim from Green Island to Yorkey’s Knob. Along with this, ‘Finn’ is pushing himself to the limit in a bid to raise much needed funds for the Indie Rose foundation. Finn began his swim at 7.23am (seven minutes ahead of schedule) after some final encouragement from his loving parents, Brad and Susie. He completed 400 laps of the Mareeba Swimming Pool, which equates to a total distance of 20km. The sheer professionalism and coaching on display was also a pleasure to observe. The overall concept was dubbed: ‘Swim with Finn’, which allowed others to swim alongside him as a form of unity. Finn was able to attach headphones into his ears, which allowed him to listen to music during his swim. Additionally, Brad had a miniature coaching board, where he could communicate with his son about his spilt timing, along with notifying him about when to pause for

a food or drink break. His start was excellent – with a solid technique and pace. He completed the first 1500m in only 25 minutes. Finn would finish the swim in 6 hours and 8 minutes. After drawing inspiration from his friend Cameron Keith, Finn was determined to compete in long distance swimming – along with helping those in the community. Brad said that he was initially cautious about Finn embarking on the 27km swim next year, however has always supported his son’s desire. Finn’s next major event will be in April, where he will complete a 22km swim on ANZAC Day. He will begin at Black Gully and swim to the ‘Avenue of Honour’ in Yungaburra. Once laying a wreath and paying his respects, he will hop back in the water and return to Black Gully. Currently having raised $1400 towards the Indie Rose foundation, Finn is hoping to raise $4000 by the time of his Green Island to Yorkey’s Knob swim in August. The Weaver family are extremely grateful for all the support they have received, with an excellent turn out last Saturday. Inspirational achievements recognised Pictured: Lenore Wyatt (Department of Agriculture), David Eade and June Cotter (David’s Mareeba-based coach) By Justin Fris

INSPIRATIONAL local athlete David Eade received a fantastic gesture from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, along with the Department of Natural Mines and Resources last Thursday morning. An inspiring paralympian – David received a cheque of $700 – which will be set aside toward his dream of participating in the 2020 Paralympic Games, with his dedicated mother and sister by his side. David has battled with Spina Bifida (a latin term for ‘split spine’ or Myelomeningocele) since berth – a condition which can mean that he doesn’t have complete control over his bowel and bladder. “I have to do swimming, because if I don’t keep swimming, I’ll be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life; and I don’t want to be in a wheelchair,” he said. “I love getting in the water and having fun. Each week, I have nine sessions at the Mareeba Pool – both in the morning and afternoons. He added: “I love being able to compete with everyone in swimming and just having so much great fun. It’s so much fun swimming against Paralympians and ablebodied athletes.”

His mother, Teresa, said that her son has had a ‘GO FUND ME’ account for awhile, and that both DAF and the DPI had taken interest into his situation. “He had only raised $80; and the agricultural department had seen his account, read his story and how he wanted to raise money to go to the 2016 Paralymic Games in Rio De Janeiro,” she said. “And they wanted to help him out.” Due to certain requirements, David will not be eligible for selection in Rio De Janeiro, however national selectors have said that he is on their radar for future games. David will be heading to Brisbane in a few days with his family, where he will compete in the state championships. He will be competing in six events (50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle and 200m individual medley) and is hoping for a top three placing in each event. Along with his family, David is especially grateful for his coaches, who are based in both Cairns and Mareeba; and have always pushed him to be the best he can possibly be. MAREEBA-based football coach John Salogni will continue to foster advice and improvement with the FNQ Heat in 2016. A distinguished head coach and specialist goalkeeping coach – Salogni is confident his goalkeepers are on the right track. “Recently, all of the coaches got together and had a meeting with our new head coach, Tim Campbell,” he said. “The meeting was very productive and all coaches were able to agree on the type of training we were going to implement for the team.” Campbell – an astute thinker of the game from the UK – has already settled in nicely to his new role, with over 20 years of experience in football. Salogni said that Campbell had already expressed his satisfaction for the current goalkeeping contingent. “Tim is a very good communicator with all of the coaches,” he said. “I know what he wants from the goalkeepers and what training he wants to see. “From my perspective, a lot of feedback I received last year was around game speed. Although we need to ensure that our off-the-ball positioning is correct, we all need our keepers to be mentally and physically quicker this season.” To do this, the Heat has increased the level of technology into their sessions. At present, the goalkeepers are participating in reactive light training, which is designed to increase alertness, agility and closing speed. Salogni spent the majority of his playing career in Brisbane, where he played as a goalkeeper for Brisbane

City and Rochedale Rovers. Prior to training or a match, he is always talking with the keepers. His passion, enthusiasm and insights into football are infectious – and extremely beneficial for up and coming footballers. “I always like to see the passion and fire of the battle to come out in their eyes,” he said. “I like the goalkeeper to feel and know that he is number one; and no one is going to come into the 18 yard box, unless he allows it. “We need that passion and fire to come out through their voice, as they are the rulers of our kingdom.” Sometimes it only takes a word or a nod of encouragement to lift the spirits of a goalkeeper – along with one step turning a great save into a world class save. “I push the goalkeepers the same way I was pushed during my career,” he said. “We push the limits and do our best to see the keepers go beyond. “But often, it is simply a word or a phrase before the heat of battle, which can be the difference for a keeper. “Even something like: ‘Son, go out and fly tonight’, can have a tremendous effect and get the keeper’s fire lit. Once it is lit, it is transferable across the park.” Salogni said there was tremendous football talent across the Tablelands and shared this advice for up and coming keepers in our region. “Make the ‘impossible’ possible,” he said. “Don’t be scared to go out there and do your best; and it doesn’t matter what others say. “And always ensure that your save goes to the glove.”
