Growers seal Mill deal AFTER 28 tireless months Far Northern Milling officially own the Mossman Mill after the grower owned group secured ownership on Friday. “As of late last Friday afternoon, I am extremely excited to announce that the group of growers from Mossman and Tablelands who has supported my Board and I over the last 28 months, now own Mossman Mill,” said Far Northern Milling Chairperson Maryann Salvetti. There has been extensive support for the Mossman Mill acquisition, with Douglas Shire Council and the Federal and State Governments providing financial assistance to save the Mill from certain closure.
“I would like to acknowledge the contributions from Douglas Shire Council and the Federal and State Governments. They have supported our business case to transition the mill from an exporter of sugar onto the world market to a Bio Precinct which will add significant value to the feedstock from the mill and ultimately provide consistently higher returns to both the growers and the Mill,” Mrs Salvetti said. With the Mill secured the focus for the Far Northern Milling team going forward will be to secure the value adding projects which will be built on the Bio Precinct land adjacent the Mill. “We will be working quickly to assemble a project team to lead
our value adding process. This team will scrutinise the technology, marketing and offtake agreement potential, before providing recommendations to the Board on the Bio Precinct Projects that we will take to final investment decision,” Mrs Salvetti said. The acquisition of the Mossman Mill has created an opportunity for growers to take control of their own destiny and will ensure the continued prosperity of the winder Mossman community. “As growers we are extremely excited at the prospect of producing high value products which will see us become price makers instead of price takers”, Mrs Salvetti said. “We are also excited for the
Mossman community to be able to share in the prosperity through job creation and business growth. This has been a win-win for every stakeholder connected with Mossman Mill and the community as a whole.” The Far Northern Milling board has attributed the successful Mill acquisition to endless hours of hard work by a tightknit team who never gave up on achieving their end goal thanks to the ongoing support of the growers and wider Mossman community. “My team and I would like to thank the growers and Mill employees for their unwavering support throughout this long and at times uncertain process,” Mrs Salvetti said.
“We would also like to make special mention to Warren Entsch and his dedicated team, Julia Leu, Mark Stoermer and their team at Douglas Shire Council, Cynthia Lui, our consultants Shane O'Kane and Brent Wall, our fantastic Legal team in Peter, Tammy, Prathna and Dylan from O'Connor Law and our accounting team at Crowe Horwath / Findex.” “A very special thankyou to Evelyn Matthews, Manager of Mossman Canegrowers for assisting Far Northern Milling throughout the process, and I would like to also acknowledge the relentless work and dedication of Tableland Canegrowers Manager Bronwyn Dwyer, as without her we would not have been able to achieve this

Rich Mareeba history donated to Musuem THE Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre had a special visitor last weekend as the great grandson of Mareeba founder John Atherton, Chris Atherton was in town. Mr Atherton was in Mareeba to donate ornaments to the museum and speak on the extensive Atherton family history and its role in shaping the town today. “I’m giving it to the museum so the people of Mareeba can enjoy it,” Mr Atherton said. “It’s fantastic to be able to return items and tell stories about things that mean so much to this town.” However, the main reason for Mr Atherton’s visit to Far North Queensland was to donate Woomeras to the new $6 million museum in Kowanyama. “Great grandad amassed an enormous collection of Aboriginal artefacts, including the
Atherton Woomera collection, of which there were 9,” he said. “And they are being handed over to be placed in the new museum which is pretty special. “We’re very privileged to have been asked.” John Atherton’s involvement with the region’s Aboriginal community didn’t stop there, as he also authored a English-Aboriginal dictionary after learning to speak the language by liaising with the Indigenous people in the region over time. “It was unheard of in those days,” Mr Atherton said. “He was an extraordinary man whose work with Aboriginal people was before its time.” Whilst in Mareeba, Mr Atherton and members of the Mareeba Heritage Museum and Visitor Information Centre visited where John Atherton and other family members were bur-
ied on Emerald End Road. Mareeba has a rich history that spans centuries, and it is evident Mareeba wouldn’t be the wonderful place that is today without its founder John Atherton and his enormous influence.

State of Range Road causes trouble for development
THE future of the proposed $650 million Kuranda development KUR-World Eco-Resort could be in the balance after the Palaszczuk Government and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) noted their concerns over the safety, environmental and community impacts of the project. In particular, the State Government’s and TMR’s greatest concern relates to traffic congestion, with the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) stating that at the completion of the development, there will be an additional 1,338 passenger movements on the Kennedy Highway between Cairns and the KURWorld site. In a media release courtesy of KUR-World last week, the Project Team behind the development of the eco-resort said they are seeking an urgent meet-
ing with local MPs and business leaders to urge them to put pressure on the State Government to act over the state of the Kuranda Range Road. A recent meeting between the KUR-World team and the Department of Transport and Main Roads saw TMR advise the Proponent that it was not able to support even a scaledback version of the development, with the state of the Range Road the main stumbling block. “The Queensland Government had approval to duplicate the Kuranda Range Road twenty years ago, yet they have let it sit without any improvement all this time,” KUR-World Project Manager Mark Lawson said. “The fact is regardless of whether or not KUR-World goes ahead in any capacity, the Kuranda Range Road and access to the Tablelands region is a
The current state of the Mareeba to Cairns road is jeopardising development.
mess and the State Government has sat on its hands and let it get to this point. “Cairns and Tropical North Queensland as a tourist destination is already suffering. What TMR and the State Government is saying is basically that no development of any kind, particularly one that relies on any kind of road network infrastructure, can be supported by this Government because they will not do the work that needs to be done.”
Mr Lawson said Kuranda, the Tablelands and Tropical North Queensland was desperate for the kind of economic boost that a development such as KUR-World would bring. “The Proponent has already invested a significant sum, not only in improvements to the site but also into the Environmental Impact Statement Process to only be told at this late stage that the State Government will not support the project due to the state of the road.
“FNQ needs an economic stimulus in the tourism space, and the goal posts appear to have been shifted. We may as well put a sign at the bottom of the range saying, ‘Closed for Business’, because that is what TMR and the State Government are telling us. Mr Lawson said it was time business and community leaders as well as local MPs stood up for the region by insisting that now is the time for the State Government to not only look at options to duplicate the Range Road, but to act. “This is not really about KUR-World at all. The Tablelands region is an important part of the Tropical North Queensland economy. A large percentage of the region’s exports are grown and produced on the Tablelands. “We’ve heard Nick Trompf
from Advance Cairns and Cairns Airport CEO Norris Carter talk about the importance of the region as an export hub, and just back in March the Cairns Airport was said to be in the running for a $10 million agricultural distribution centre. “It’s not only the people living on the Tablelands and tourists who require an upgrade to the range, but our local industry as well. Is the State Government also writing off our local producers like they seem to be willing to do to locals and tourism?” Mr Lawson said TMR had advised the Project Team that the road was already close to capacity and listed as one of the 15 most dangerous roads in the State, but that it was considered too expensive to upgrade and there was no plan in place for TMR to undertake the work.
Chamber urges community to keep pressure on upgrade of Mareeba to Cairns road link THE Mareeba Chamber of Commerce has urged the Tablelands community to continue to apply pressure on the State Government to upgrade the Mareeba to Cairns link of the Kennedy Highway. “In its current state, this
section of road fails to properly cater for the current volume of traffic and future anticipated growth,” chamber chair Joe Moro said. “It’s impacting on all industries – from commuter traffic to freight transport and tourism.”
4095 4447
Mr Moro’s comments come after the developers of Kur-World claimed the State Department of Transport and Main Roads has cast doubt on the project due to traffic management issues on the Kuranda Range Road.
While not commenting on the specifics of the development, Mr Moro said it was concerning to think the state of the current road link could hamper a development of this kind. “While we welcome the work that the State Govern-

Tec-NQ’s Jennifer Trybula said the organisation’s partnership with QAWN was instrumental in securing Jack work experience. “Jack was keen to get experience working with technicians in a modern, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility,” Ms Trybula said. “MSF Sugar has provided him with the perfect opportunity to see the technology of Industry 4.0 in practice.” Jack completed two weeks work experience with MSF Sugar’s sugar mill on the Tablelands – one of the most modern in the industry – which provided him with a unique opportunity to learn about advanced manufacturing in agriculture. Kirk Lang, MSF Sugar, said the cane industry was one of the most complicated in the agricultural sector. “Young people these days are technologically savvy… the older industry not so much, so the more young people you bring in, the more fresh, new ideas our industry benefits from,” Mr Lang said. “It’s a win-win.”

Ms Kruss, who helped Jack secure work experience with leading sugar miller MSF Sugar, said traditional roles in agriculture were disappearing to make way for Industry 4.0. “The industry is becoming more automated across the entire value chain and the traditional roles are evolving,” Ms Kruss said. “There are career pathways for students in integrated technology, vision systems and instrumentation, even within trades, and I’m so pleased that through FNQ Growers’ alliance with Growcom, we have been able to help Jack fulfil his dreams of pursuing a career while completing his senior education. “Tec-NQ works in partnership with industry to deliver training that runs parallel with the evolving digital era of agriculture, fulfilling skills gaps and providing valuable jobs.”

Solar farm gets tick of approval SOLAR POWER: The proposed solar farm site at 166, Marnane Road, Tolga.
THE proposed 60MW solar farm on 166 Marnane Road, Tolga had its application approved for a development permit at the most recent Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) meeting. The proposed solar farm site will consist of approximately 240,000 solar panels that will provide an energy production equivalent to that of 5,000 households – and will be situated on 125 hectares of freehold land. The project will be undertaken by Atherton Solar Farm, a renewable energy development, investment and operational company specialising in large scale renewable energy and storage projects. TRC councillors Kate Eden, Dave Bilney, Samantha Banks and Mayor Joe Paronella voted
in favour of approving the development’s application. “I strongly support renewable energy,” Cr Eden said. “I believe that renewable energy must be the way of the future – renewable energy is a good practical use of rural land where other forms of production are not particularly viable. “I have listened to the objections and I do understand the possible impact on visual amenity, and I suppose this is not my preferred location for a solar farm, however as the property owner the applicant has the right.” Cr Banks echoed Cr Eden’s sentiments. “In principle I am quite supportive of this so I feel quite comfortable that the officers have conditioned the develop-
ment,” she said. “I too have had a site visit and I could see that with the additional plantings that the visual impact should hopefully be reduced in time.” While a concerted push is being made towards a greater renewable energy presence on the Tablelands, concerns have been raised as it relates the location of the project. Cr Katrina Mellick was the only councillor to vote against approving the development. “I have really deliberated over this item,” she said. “I too am a strong supporter of alternative energy sources including solar and believe they have a place in the TRC future; however I hold a relatively high level of discomfort with this application.
“I appreciate that the applicant and the officers have worked really hard to try and find a positive outcome for this proposal, but to me it simply doesn’t sit right.” “For me, this is the right development at the right time, but I just can’t see that it’s the right location as it is wedged between rural and rural-residential properties.” Cr Mellick said there are so many areas in our region that would lend themselves to this type of development without such an impact on others. “So for me, I’m afraid I’m just not convinced,” she said. Councillors Owen Byrnes and Annette Haydon left the meeting as they had a perceived conflict of interest.

Anaemia too prevalent in Indigenous and Torres Strait children
Mulungu continue to fight against anaemia in the region.
A CONCERNING report by James Cook University’s Dympna Leonard recently highlighted that almost 62 per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children living in Far North Queensland were found to be anaemic at age 6-23 months. That is compared to the national average which sits between 8 to 13 per cent, depending on the report. The most common cause of anaemia is iron deficiency, and
its effects have the capacity to significantly impact one’s brain development, growth, educational attainment and overall health. While the report didn’t specifically pinpoint nutritional findings, poor diet was found to be the leading cause of anaemia in young children. The report narrows in on worrying statistics that not many people are aware of, however the Tablelands are fortunate to have quality health providers
in the region to help fight the prevalence of anaemia in Indigenous and children. One such provider is the Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation Medical Centre, who has an extensive model of care that takes place over three stages. ■ The full report can be found by following the link https://onlinelibrary.wiley. com/doi/full/10.1111/17536405.12911

Fight for free to air TV SPEEWAH residents will have their television connection turned off as of September 1, 2019. The connection was initially scheduled to be ceased on July 1; however Council has extended the service, at no cost to the ratepayers until September 1 to allow residents extra time to make alternative arrangements. Mayor Tom Gilmore said television broadcasting is not a Council responsibility. However, because there is a black spot in Speewah and some residents could not get TV signal, Council supplied a rebroadcast service at the request of the ratepayers in the identified benefited area on the understanding that they had to pay for the service. “Council wrote to those Speewah ratepayers on multiple occasions seeking feedback on whether this service should be
continued, at the ratepayers’ expense,” he said. “Based on the response Council received, it was evident that ratepayers did not want to continue paying the levy for the TV service. “Consequently, Council made the decision to decommission the transmission site and affected ratepayers were advised of this decision earlier this year.” Speewah residents presented the Mareeba Shire Council with a petition at a council meeting in June to ensure the TV service is not ceased, of which was endorsed by the Member for Barron River Craig Crawford MP. One such Speewah resident and petitioner who has criticised the Mareeba Shire Council’s consultation process throughout their dealings with them is Charlotte Doger De Speville.
“There has been a lack of transparency on behalf of the Mareeba Shire Council since making the decision to cease our TV service,” she said. “We were informed by Cr Lenore Wyatt that our petition showed that the majority of Speewah residents were in favour of the levy, yet they still are stating that they will be terminating the service. “It is extraordinary that we’re in the 21st century and we won’t have free to air – I am on a pension and cannot afford any additional costs. It is ridiculous.” Ms Doger De Speville said she has been disappointed with the attitude Mayor Tom Gilmore has displayed and noted that she would like greater clarification on the petition figures from the necessary people at Mareeba Shire Council.

Opportunity for producers to improve business management
Siam Weed warning
SIAM was first identified in Australia in 1994 in the Tully Bingal Bay areas. Siam has since been found around Townsville, Mossman, Innot Hot Springs, Mt Garnet and is on the Herbert River. It has recently been detected in the National Park adjoining Maryfarms and is also present on Emu Creek at Petford where a control program is underway. Siam will heavily impact on the grazing industry, banana and horticulture farms. It will affect sugar cane and forestry operations including the wet tropics regions. Siam has been responsible for stock losses, and in susceptible people can cause skin and respiratory complainants. Council is calling on the public to report any suspected sightings of the weed by calling 1300 308 461.

Excellent experience in work BY RHYS THOMAS
HIGH school students have been gaining work experience as part of the school curriculum for quite some time. It’s an opportunity given to them by employers so they can gain an insight into the work place, what they can expect and what is expected of them. Year 10 students from both Mareeba State High School and St Stephen’s Catholic College were given a chance to trade their school work for real on the job training by working voluntarily in local businesses throughout the last few weeks. St Stephen’s College Principal, Mrs Ida Pinese was thankful to the businesses which help in the program.
St Stephen’s Catholic College principal Ida Pinese with student Gina Wilson and Ida Portella of Ida Portella Business and Travel Services where Gina did a week of work experience.
“We understand that to them, time is money,” she said. “It opens up horizons for careers the students never envisioned. “Business also removes stig-
mas surrounding young people by seeing them work first hand.” This program provides students with invaluable hands on experience and a chance to impress possible future employers.
Weaver awarded belated Australia Day Award MAREEBA’S Finnian Weaver received a 2019 Australia Day Award for his outstanding contribution to the community. Finnian was unable to attend the Australia Day awards ceremony and was presented with his community service award on Friday by Mayor Tom Gilmore. As a member of the Student Council, Finn played an integral role in the creation of a mural encouraging mental health awareness and was heavily involved with the 'Bullying No Way' week. Finn has received many accolades for his service to others including the Bendigo Bank Community Service Award in 2015, '16 and '17 and the Tom Braes Outstanding Community Service Award last year.
The former Mareeba State High Vice Captain was also awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards where, in order to achieve the Gold Medal, Finn had to complete and document 52 weeks of consecutive community service. In addition, with the support of his twin sister Orla and family, Finn completed the Green Island to Yorkey's Knob Swim and raised over $4,000 for research into childhood illness. Finn has also dedicated countless hours to Life Saving and hopes to become a nurse – and is on his way to doing so as he is currently studying nursing at James Cook University.
Finnian Weaver accepts his award from Mareeba Shire Mayor Tom Gilmore.
Handing over the reins after 21 years
John and Jan De Lai pass on the keys to the business to Janelle and Cameron De Lai.
JOHN and Jan De Lai from Bruno’s Batteries and Outback Solar and Outdoors are calling it a day – it’s time to hang up the boots and enjoy what’s left of life. That’s the sentiment that was on their minds when John and Jan decided it was time to retire and pass the business on to their son Cameron and his wife Janelle. In reflection Jan said “It is the right time for us to go, we have thoroughly enjoyed running the business and meeting all the great people who have supported us in the last 21 years from this current location.” “We will both take the opportunity to do some of the things we’ve been meaning to do and really just enjoy life.” It all began in 1958 when Italian immigrant Bruno De Lai saw a business opportunity after he began making handmade rubber case batteries and the business grew to what it is today. The Byrnes street location
which houses Bruno’s Batteries and Outback Solar and Outdoors has now been sold to Cameron and Janelle De Lai and they both take a giant leap forward after moving from interstate about three years ago. Getting away from the hustle and bustle of city life and the lifestyle change were some of the reasons they decided to move back home and with the move comes this wonderful opportunity for Cameron and his family.
Cameron brings with him an enormous amount of expertise: A qualified electrician, an accredited solar installer, specialist security installer and a wealth of experience in electronics. Ending your working life is always emotional but John and Jan know they have left what they have worked for all their lives in very good hands. “A huge thank you to all our past and present customers,” Jan said.
20 years ago John and Jan receives the keys to their new Byrnes street business from Builder Greg Byrne.

All residents should be prepared for bushfire, but if you answer yes to any of these four questions, you are likely to be at a heightened risk. 1 Do you live within a few kilometres of bushland? 2 Does your local area have a bushfire history? 3 Do you have trees and shrubs within 20 metres of your house? 4 Is your home built on a slope?

The biggest event of the year for Mareeba takes place this weekend at Kerribee Park and this year’s Rodeo is extra special as it marks the 70th anniversary of the iconic event. With a heady mix of bucking bulls and horses, utes, woodchops, fairy floss, show bags, rides and much, much more – the two day action packed event is one not to miss. With nearly 14,000 people expected through the gates, this year’s rodeo will be bigger and better than ever with all the attractions in the arena on the big screen allowing everyone to see the action up close and personal. The new grandstand seating has also been completed and the new PA system will have the crowds pumping. As usual, Friday night’s Downtown Parade will get the party started, followed by two full days of rodeo action and a whole heap of fun. With a history dating back to 1949, the event has become a local icon with people travelling from all over the State to experience it; and with some of the country’s best competi-
tors lining up to compete, you can be assured that non-stop action is set to storm Kerribee Park’s arena. From 7.30am on both Saturday and Sunday, there is a full program of action including bull riding, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, ladies and junior events, plus more. Saturday night will feature the crowd pleasing ‘Battle of the States’ where Queensland and NSW teams will go head to head to claim the bragging rights. Teams compete in Bull Riding, Saddle Bronc, Bareback, Steer Wrestling, and Barrel Racing from 7.30pm. Time event competitors compete side by side – so you can cheer on your team and see who wins the match-up. When the action in the ring slows down for a break, take a wander out of the arena to the ag show exhibits, rides and displays on offer. With so much to see and do at this massive local event – make sure you come on out and experience one of the best rodeo’s in the country right here in our backyard. – If you get in the saddle, be ready for the ride.

Rodeo action all weekend!!
Message from the Rodeo’s President
THE Mareeba Rodeo festival is upon us again. Over the last 12 months the Mareeba Rodeo committee and band of volunteers have worked extremely hard to ensure that the 2019 Mareeba Rodeo will once again be a great event. 2019 is a special year for the Mareeba Rodeo as this year we celebrate our 70th year of which we have some exciting entertainment to celebrate this achievement. We also welcome a new partner for the Mareeba Rodeo in 2019 with Ringers Western coming on as the major sponsor not only for this year’s event but for the next three years. I would also like to thank Mareeba Mazda for their continued support as they will again be the Major sponsor of the Friday night down town parade where we will see our 2019 Mareeba Rodeo Queen and Princess crowned. A big thank you to the Bendigo bank for once again sponsoring the Agricultural show tent and Hungry Possum for sponsoring the Saturday night Qld v NSW Rodeo State of Origin. We are very fortunate to have so many fantastic sponsors supporting this year’s event and all of these sponsors can be found on our website www.mareebarodeo. com.au. I encourage you to support these businesses. We have secured some of Australia’s best stock and they will be travelling to Mareeba from all parts of the country, we are also very fortunate to have record nominations with cowboys and cowgirls travelling from all corners of Australia to compete at this fantastic event. As mentioned this year will be the 70th Year for the Mareeba Rodeo and we are excited with the entertainment we have planned to celebrate this special occasion.

Rodeo action all weekend!!
Top level competition and entertainment is assured providing full-on action and plenty to watch over the two days. From 7.30am each day, all the usual rodeo events will feature in the arena and on the big screen. Another crowd pleaser, the Bucking Ponies will also feature throughout the weekend. Events in the arena include all the favourites such as the bull ride, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, team roping and breakaway roping. The main finals will be held on Sunday afternoon. The main attractions on Saturday night will be team relay and of course the State of Origin. It’s Queensland versus New South Wales and the winner takes all. With $6000 as the winning prize money, both states will be performing at their very best.
SHOWCASING the skills of axemen, the Woodchops is a traditional drawcard event seen at all agricultural shows and one not to be missed at the Mareeba Rodeo. The woodchop competition is an iconic event acknowledging the rich history of the timber industry. Most of the events being performed evolved from the actual tasks
and work-day skills required of axemen just prior to the appearance of the chain saw. Competitors require strength, a sharp eye, speed and accuracy while using the razor-sharp competition axes – don’t miss the excitement of the woodchops at Mareeba Rodeo this Saturday. Located beside the Agricultural Show Marquee.
The fun of sideshow alley THE fun and excitement of sideshow alley is about to hit the Mareeba Rodeo. Young or old, there will be something for everyone to enjoy over the two days
with the latest rides, games, showbags, food and more. The popular Ute Muster will also be held on Saturday at the grounds from 7.30am to 12noon.

New library a win for people living with a disability THE Mareeba Disability Action Group is a small group who has worked together over the past six years to identify accessibility issues for people living with a disability in Mareeba. In collaboration with Rights In Action, an independent advocacy agency, we met with the Mareeba Shire Council to talk about our concerns with safety, accessibility and lack of space at the existing Mareeba Library. In October 2018, we asked the Council to provide a larger and more accessible modern library. We would like
to thank the Mayor, Councillors and Mareeba Shire Council for listening and creating such an innovative and cost-effective solution for a modern and spacious library and community hub. It has been very exciting to hear and read about the $1.08 million funding which will result in a new community hub and library. The quick response and success of the grant application speaks to the efficiency and skills of the Council. The new library and hub will be a great asset for the community with increased parking/ disability parking, accessible toilets, space for wheelchairs to navigate inside/outside the library, increased computer access and a larger chil-
dren’s zone to name a few benefits. We congratulate the Council for achieving this outcome through accessing state funded grants. Well done. ALISON HARDWICK – on behalf of the Mareeba Disability Action Group
Mareeba to Cairns recycling tour in July HAVE you ever wondered what happens to the Recyclable materials that we send for processing from Mareeba Shire to Cairns? I have a real passion for recycling and I would like to
share it with you as well. I am always fielding questions about what we do as a council in the area of recycling and all this curiosity has led me to investigate if I could arrange a group tour at the Cairns Regional Council, Materials Recovery Facility. So after a few phone calls and emails the Waste Education Officer he has agreed, and I am happy to say that the tour is happening on July 24. The visit will go for approximately 1.5hrs which consists of a presentation and tour of the facilities. I am encouraging car pooling, so if you would like to join me on the July 24 at 10.00am please make contact by messaging my FB Page “Lenore Wyatt

Why are businesses closing down IF you have purchased various items from shops in Mareeba over recent years you will have noticed numerous businesses have closed their doors and cleaned out their stock. How can that be good and progressive for any town? You’ve got to wonder
why these businesses have closed down. Is it because one government after another (and God knows there been numerous ones come and go in recent years) is intent on flogging Australia out to the world and filling Australia with imports? Makes the thinking man wonder where this country is heading? JOHN HATTON Mareeba

A place like no other
IT'S hard to imagine that you are only moments away from all the conveniences the town centre has to offer, when sitting on this amazing timber deck looking out onto what can only be described as a wealth of picturesque flora and quiet beauty. Bordering the Barron River Esplanade, you could nearly be forgiven in believing that you were somewhere, without neighbours, in our great Australian bush. If this beautiful view from the rear deck wasn't enough, you will be even more impressed knowing that the other property boundaries are with crown land and only the one immediate neighbour, a retired couple who have resided in their property for years. The highset home, lifted to legal height, is constructed from timber featuring four bedrooms plus an office and
plenty of character. There is a bathroom with separate toilet upstairs as well as a 2nd toilet and shower downstairs. The kitchen has recently been refurbished and features large pantry cupboards. The living although not overly big is comfortable and has high ceilings but best of all opens out onto the magnificent deck. Outside the garden has a variety of fruit trees and there is the added bonus of a shed/ workshop for storage as well as the area under the house which has a cement floor. Other Features include... • Rustic log cabin/shed • Separate timber workAddress: Price: Agent: Contact:
shop/garage • Three undercover parking spaces • 2100m2 allotment • Established fruit trees and gardens under irrigation This property really is 'one of a kind'. Yes there maybe properties that offer all this and more but there would not be too many that have what this property offers and is priced so affordably at $319,000. Carmelina Veschetti 22.12.1925 - 13.07.2018 The moment that you died, our hearts were torn in two, one side filled with heartache, the other died with you. We often lie awake at night, when the world is fast asleep, and take a walk down memory lane, with tears upon our cheeks. Remembering you is easy, we do it everyday, but missing you is heartache, that never goes away. We hold you tightly within our hearts, and there you will remain, Until the joyous day arrives, that we will meet again.

MONTHS of rigorous training has opened up an opportunity for Mareeba local swimmer Katrina Coffey to compete in the INAS Global Games. The 2019 International Federation for Intellectual Impairment Sport (INAS) Global Games will be held in Brisbane in October 12 to 19 and will host 70 countries where athletes will be looking to qualify for the 2020 Paralympics. The INAS Global Games are the largest in the world for the celebration of elite athletes with intellectual impairment. Katrina has been training hard with Coach June Cotter in preparation for the upcoming games, including participating in the recent Barrier Reef Games. Katrina’s mother Vickye said “We are very overwhelmed.” “She’s doing a lot more training now. “She’s very disciplined and she doing it all without complaint.” Being a former member of the International swimming team Katrina is looking in good stride to participate again this

Gladiators show plenty of heart in away loss THE Mareeba Gladiators AGrade side went down in a gutsy effort to the Cairns Kangaroos at Vico Oval on Sunday afternoon. It was a poor start from the away side, as a lack of possession hurt the men in green and gold and Roos were able to capitalise through two tries to hooker Ty Millard in the first ten minutes of the match. That didn’t deter the Gladiators however, as stalwart Tom Hughes showed plenty of determination to muscle his way to the line and bring the score back within a converted try. Roos and the Gladiators scored another try apiece for the remainder of the first half, of which included a 90 metre dash from rapid winger Eze Harper. Kangaroos went into halftime with an 18-10 lead. There was nothing between the two sides in the opening stages of the second half, and it was the boot of Jayden Edwards that kicked off the scoring opportunities for Mareeba as Keripo Gutchen-Gela picked
up a loose ball from an Edwards bomb and linked up with centre Trent Barnard to bring the game within two points. It was clear there was a shift in momentum towards the away side, however they were unable to transfer it into points. That reprieve paid dividends for Roos as they took advantage of two Gladiators mistakes to score two tries and jump out to a 28-16 lead. As the Gladiators were trying to get back into the game, they were reduced to ten men after three of their players were sinbinned. Roos also had two players sent for ten and the game finished with eleven and ten players for each team respectively. Roos scored again to make it 34-16 which put the game out of reach. To Mareeba’s credit, they crossed for two consolation tries to make for a respectable 34-28 scoreline at the end. In Reserve Grade, Mareeba went down 42-14.
Gladiators winger Eze Harper picks up a loose ball and runs 90 metres to score. The Mareeba Gladiators have the bye this weekend.
Bulls grind out draw at home
THE Mareeba Bulls grounded out a 1-1 draw with Marlin Coast Rangers last Sunday. According to Coach Perry, it was a case of two points lost as the side dominated the second half with numerous opportunities to seal the match. An even affair in the first half saw some slick passing by
both sides but a defensive error by the usually reliable Alex Plowman saw the Coast go one up in the 33rd minute. The Bulls rallied in the second half and came out strong, peppering the Rangers goal time and time again but couldn’t find that finishing touch.
A goal down, coach Perry threw on his wild card in the form of Damien Wildman who again saved the Bulls from defeat has he rose high above the defence to nod the ball in to the net. Wildman had the chance to seal a victory in the dying seconds of the match as he was
unsuccessful with a dynamic overhead bicycle kick which went just wide. Perry said “There was a lot of frustration there today we had a lot of opportunities to score, but is hard to break down a team who parks the bus and it was very clear they wanted to close out the game

in the second half,” “A credit to the boys, they never stopped trying right until the end.” In other matches, Dennis Allen’s reserves served up a goal fest and should have come away with a win but were lucky to seal a 3-3 draw after Adrian Madrid slotted
home in the dying moments of the game. Luch Avolio’ s youth side continued their fine form and looked comfortable in their 2-0 win over the Rangers. The Bulls travel to Leichhardt this weekend to take on the Lions in all four grades.
Jessie Holder will be competing in the final round of the Motocross State Championships.

THE Atherton Senior Roosters have joined the quest to defeat brain cancer and are holding a “Beanies for Brain Cancer” day in support of the Mark Hughes Foundation at the club’s home game on Saturday July 27 when
they host Cairns Brothers. Supporters at the game will be encouraged to purchase a beanie for $25 and wear while cheering for the Roosters and also supporting a great cause. The annual “Beanies for

Brain Cancer” day will also be run over the same weekend by the National Rugby League. Beanies will also be on sale the week before at the Roosters home game on July 20.
THE Motocross State Championship podium has reserved a seat for local motocross rider Jessie Holder after his recent exploits at round one of the championships in Townsville. Jessie competed in two divisions claiming a spot on the podium for each division; Jessie won first in the 13-15 Junior Light 2 Stroke division and second in the 13-16 Junior Light 4 Stroke division. Jessie’s father Chris was ecstatic about his son’s performance. “It’s unbelievable,” he said. “Being the youngest in the division he did really well. “He recently received a new bike that he rode for the first time the
Wednesday prior to the titles.” The second round of the state titles will be held in Toowoomba on July 20 and 21 and if successful he will be “in the running” for the state championship honour. Jessie was excited about his
recent experience. “It was a really good time, I loved it.” “I expected to get podium but to get first is just unbelievable. “I would like to thank all my sponsors especially Mareeba Yamaha for hooking me up with the new bike.”
