Flippin’ good fun THE Far North’s fearless cowboys went head-to-head for a night of crazy thrills and spills at the annual Mt Carbine Bull and Bronc Ride on Saturday. Five hours of non-stop action kept the crowd on their feet, capped off by this rather close encounter with Zac Hornung-Clarke and a raging bull. Hundreds of revellers enjoyed a great night of entertainment as young and old competitors were tossed around at the town’s sports grounds. PHOTOS PAGE 25 FULL STORY PAGE 26

Residents fired up By Michael Serenc
RESIDENTS concerned about a proposed $650 million eco-resort near Kuranda have lashed out against the development in their area. More than 150 people attended an information session about “KUR-World” run by Kuranda Region Planning Group (KPRG) last Thursday night. KPRG opposes KUR-World in its current form, which is the brainchild of Reever and
Ocean Developments’ chairman Ken Lee. If eventually approved by the State Government and Mareeba Shire Council, the 626ha development would feature a luxury 200 room hotel, three or four star resort, residential villa accommodation, education and business facilities and a health and a wellbeing centre. Myola residents Cheryl Tonkin and Geoff Van Koeverden, who live near KUR-World’s Barnwell Rd site, said they had put up with relentless noise since land clearing of the site had begun.
“We’ve heard machinery run for weeks, day and night. Huge windrows have been put in and just burnt,” he said. “There’s still so many questions unanswered like sewerage infrastructure, emergency services and the cost to ratepayers – are we going to be billed for this?” Mr Van Koeverden said he was also concerned about the plight of existing wildlife in the area. “Since the land clearing started, I’ve had herds of wallabies on my property, they access the small
clearing that I’ve got, I’ve had birdlife I’ve never heard of in there too,” he said. “It makes you wonder with displaced wildlife – where do they go? There’s only a certain area they can occupy until it reaches an overload point.” KPRG liaison and Kuranda Envirocare president Cathy Retter challenged Mr Lee to meet directly with her and other concerned residents about the project. cont. A MAREEBA butcher has taken top honours at Brisbane’s Ekka after being named the 2016 Sausage King of Queensland. Russo’s Quality Meats won best beef sausage in the “Traditional Australian” category at the state finals of the Australian Meat Industry Council’s sausage king competition on Sunday. Butcher owners Dennis and Silvia Russo were on hand to receive their Sausage King trophy and were elated with their win. “We are very stoked,” said Mr Russo. “We have been entering now for seven years and have made the state final seven times. “We tweaked last’s year sausage a bit and this year came away with the win, we couldn’t
be happier." Russo’s took out the regional level of the competition held in Cairns in June, which saw them go through to the state final. They have 13 regional awards and can now add a state title to their collection. “We put a lot of time and effort into our sausage creations to create the best high-quality ones we can, we just love making sausage,” said Mr Russo. The couple also won third place in the lamb/open class category and will now head to Tasmania for the national final in February next year. To taste the best beef sausage in Queensland you will have to head down to Russo’s as the recipe is staying top secret for now.
Buddy benches will help lonely kids TWO Atherton community groups have teamed up to stop kids feeling left out in the schoolyard. Atherton Men’s Shed has finished the last of six “buddy benches” – a park bench where lonely students can wait until seen by their peers and invited to participate in lunchtime activities. Atherton Lionesses treasurer Denise McGucken approached Men’s Shed with the idea about 18 months ago after reading a newspaper article about Cairns student Charlie Cooper’s success with a buddy bench. The benches have since been distributed to several schools in the Atherton area, with prisoners from Lotus Glen jail pitching in by making stencils for the benches. “A lot of the schools have now started buddy programs because of this,” Mrs McGucken said. “It’s an inclusive thing.” Lionesses president Karen West said the group has happy to drive the initiative. “It lets the community know that the Lionesses are not just there for the fun of it, we’re there to help,” she said. Atherton Men’s Shed secretary John Whyte said it

had taken about 30 hours of labour to complete each bench. “There would be at least half a dozen guys who worked on them over that time,” he said. Men’s Shed president Paul Jones said the organisa-
tion was proud to have contributed to the project over the past year-and-a-half. The final buddy bench will be delivered to Walkamin State School this month to be situated within the school grounds.

Members of the community attended an information session on KUR-World last week.
Residents fight back FROM PAGE 1 “We know this is not a sustainable development. It’s an inappropriate location in a highly sensitive environmental area,” she said. But a KUR-World spokeswoman said Mr Lee or one of his representatives would “meet with a wide variety of community groups and individuals over the course of the coming months, including KPRG”. “We have met or been in communication with a number of stakeholders including representatives from Kuranda Envirocare, Tourism Kuranda, Djabugay Aboriginal Corporation, local businesses and tourism operators, the media and several local residents,” she said. “As soon as the Draft Terms of Reference is released by the Coordinator General’s office, we hope to meet with various stakeholders and community groups to find out if they believe the ToR sufficiently addresses their concerns.” Mr Lee recently landed himself in trouble with council, after being ordered to rectify a 1.3ha dam which was con-
structed without approval last December. The dam will now have to be brought up to council standard, which includes having a design plan prepared by a Registered Professional Engineer (RPEQ) and implementing an effective erosion and sediment control plan. KUR-World was given coordinated project status by the Queensland Coordinator-General in July, with a Draft Terms of Reference (TOR) expected to be released this month for comment by both the public and government agencies. The project will need to clear several hurdles, including the publication of an Environmental Impact Statement, before the Coordinator General can recommend approving or rejecting it. “The community consultation phase will continue throughout the EIS process, which is anticipated to be around 18 months,” the spokeswoman said. “We don’t see this as being a linear process. It is one we want to approach in a structured and inclusive manner to ensure we are consulting with a diverse group of stakeholders who all have valuable feedback.”

“Your local bloke on the Tablelands” Servicing Mareeba, Atherton and everywhere else!
Region mourns beautiful Elyse DIMBULAH teen Elyse Miller-Kennedy has been remembered as a beautiful young woman with the world at her feet. Tablelands residents were left heartbroken after Ms Miller-Kennedy, 17, was critically injured following a head-on collision with another vehicle along Burke Developmental Rd on August 3. She passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family at Townsville Hospital last week, donating her organs in a final act of selflessness. The Miss World Australia finalist and former Face of Cairns Central was in her final year of studies at St Stephen’s Catholic College, and had plans to study forensic law at university. BLAK Model Management owner Barbara Head, who discovered Ms Miller-Kennedy after being recommended by Mareeba fashion designer Liana Hastie, said the teen possessed a sense of maturity beyond her years. “To win the Face of Cairns Central at 13 and to have the humility she had at that time, she was extremely humble,” Ms Head said. “Even at the age of 17, to go to Miss World and represent Queensland…she was an extremely mature girl for her age, everyone there was much older than her and she held herself beautifully.” Ms Head said the loss of Ms Miller-Kennedy had left a “massive hole” in the local modelling community. “She’s left a lot of close friends behind,” she said. “Elyse was a silent achiever who never pushed to the front of the cue. She was the kind of girl who was always happy to be involved in anything and learn

from that experience. “She was a very caring girl and that’s why everyone was so devastated in our agency. “It’s just unfathomable that something like this could happen within our community.” Ms Head said Ms Miller-Kennedy’s family wanted to encourage other families to talk with their children about organ donation and the life-giving benefits it provided. “It’s a conversation that Elyse brought up with her family and wanted them to know it’s something she definitely wanted,” she said. “Her parents were absolutely relieved they weren’t put in a situation where they had to make that decision. “Please have that conversation with your family.” Investigations into the crash are continuing.

Youth focus for mental health first aid course FIRST aid for mental health is everyone’s business. Following on from the success of previous mental health first aid courses held last year, Mareeba Rotary will host another in September, this time with a focus on youth. The ‘Youth Mental Health First Aid Course’ will be held on September 6 and 7, and is for adults who live with, work with, know of, or care for adolescents, as well as members of the community and sport administrators. The two-day course will teach adults how to assist adolescents who are developing a mental health problem, or in a mental health crisis. Course participants will learn about adolescent development, the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems in young people, where and

how to get help when a young person is developing a mental illness, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation. Dr Margaret Purcell, who coordinates the courses, said places fill quickly and those interested should book now. “Last year all of the workshops were really well attended and booked out early,” she said. “We are all likely to come across people with mental health problems and if you would like to feel more confident to support them, then the course is a must. “We are encouraging anyone working with or involved with youth to attend this course.” Mental health first aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, or who
is in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional treatment is received or the crisis resolves. Mental health first aid strategies are taught in evidence-based training programs authored by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia and conducted by accredited MHFA Instructors across Australia. Currently, it is estimated that three million Australians are currently battling anxiety or depression, which can be caused by a multitude of factors. First aid is not just for cuts and bruises – it is vital in helping to saves the lives of those who are suffering a mental health issue. The workshop is $50 per person with spaces limited to 12 so bookings are essential. To book for the course, call Tanya at Mareeba Hospital on 4092 9146.
PRECIOUS METAL: Far North residents try their luck fossicking for gold at the annual Gold Panning Championships on Saturday.
Gold panning delights locals TREASURE hunters hoping to find a glimmer of gold were out in force on Saturday at the annual Gold Panning Championships. About 136 competitors tried their luck at Mareeba’s Centenary Park across 11 different categories, with some big prizes up for grabs. Run by the North Queensland Miners Association (NQMA), secretary Fiona Abbey said the event was likely the biggest in years. “It was an excellent turnout,” she said. “Gold panning is an old skill, it’s been around for so long and for people who’ve read about it or have family history as part of the gold rushes up here in North Queensland, that gets them interested and an opportunity to see what’s it’s all about.” Ms Abbey said a highlight was the

awarding of a gold pan to Lyn Byrne after she won the Women’s Skilled category for the third year in a row. “That achievement hasn’t happened since we first started having the pan as a prize in 2000,” she said. An $850 metal detector was awarded to John Wellman in the Open category. Young fossickers also joined the fun, with several first-timers taking out the junior categories. “The Turbopans we had for sale at the event were very popular. Even for people who have creeks in their backyard, it’s something for kids to take up as a hobby,” Ms Abbey said. Atherton’s Crystal Cave Museum donated broken up crystals, adding to the excitement on the day. Council sinks Ravenshoe pool proposal
EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE DELIVERING EXTRAORDINARY SERVICE Contact us for a free copy of the booklet “A Complete Guide to Planning or Arranging a Funeral”.
TABLELANDS Regional Council (TRC) has all but killed off a proposed pool for Ravenshoe after voting against funding a feasibility study last week. Council will now not contribute $19,275 to a $27,775 feasibility study into the proposed $3.6 million pool, after being approached by lobby group Ravenshoe Rural Activities Incorporating Sustainable Energy (RAISE) in June. TRC mayor Joe Paronella defended council’s decision, saying the pool was not financially sustainable for council to maintain over the life of the facility. “Basically, we’re not in a financial position to do anything there at the moment,” he said. “There were people who were very passionate about the project going forward and there were other people who made their feelings very clear that they did not want the project in the form that it was.” RAISE had already received a $35,000 State Government grant to get pool drawings done, and with an updated feasibility study, were hoping council could then apply for a State Government grant to build the pool. Under RAISE’s proposal, the facility would have had eight heated 25m lanes and be housed indoors. But Cr Paronella left the door open to funding a revised pool concept or an alternative project for Ravenshoe. “Council will consider anything that comes in from residents,” he said. Cr Paronella said he and council would be happy to meet with residents who wanted to discuss the pool or other potential projects for Ravenshoe. RAISE president Doreen Mortimer said she was disappointed by council’s decision and would have more to say after the group’s committee meeting on August 23. “We were looking at future infrastructure and council just won’t allow it to happen,” she said. More than 300 people attended a rally in Ravenshoe at the end of May in support of the pool.

BLOOMING: Green thumbs are being urged to nominate for Tablelands Regional Council’s Garden Awards.
Gardens to shine on Tablelands BUDDING and experienced green thumbs are being urged to nominate for Tablelands Regional Council’s 2016 Garden Awards. “Across the region we have some truly beautiful and inspiring gardens which are nurtured by people with a passion for the outdoors, and pride in their premises,” said Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella. “We have some great prizes up for grabs for winners and runners up in each category, with all nominations vying for the Champion Garden and Judge’s Choice Awards.” Categories include young gardener (under 17 years), best home garden, new home garden (under two years), rural garden, community garden, commercial garden and vegetable garden. Judging will commence the week starting September 5. Nominations close on August 26, with winners announced on September 22 at council’s meeting. Entry forms are available from council customer service centres or online at www.trc.qld. gov.au
A MAN has died after being electrocuted at a Tolga farm last Tuesday. Police and emergency services were called to a property on Tolga-Kairi Rd that morning, where it is believed the 29-year-old was in a cherry picker when it collided with overhead power lines. The Atherton man suffered an electric shock from the 22,000 volt power lines and was treated by paramedics before being declared deceased at the scene. Officers from Queensland Workplace Health and Safety are investigating and police will prepare a report for the Northern Coroner.
Growers should have a say TABLELANDS banana growers are being urged to cast their vote the industry’s current levy poll. The Australian banana industry is currently being asked whether the current Plant Health Australia (PHA) levy can be increased from the rate of 0.0103 cents per kilogram, to 0.5 cents per kilogram to partially fund the purchase of the TR4-infected Tully farm. The levy ballot closes on August 22, and with potential delays in mail time from some areas, Australian Banana Growers Council chairman Doug Phillips is calling on growers to vote sooner rather than later. “Our national levy ballot to fund TR4 containment is a significant moment in the industry’s history,” Mr Phillips said. “The ABGC sees the purchase of the TR4 infected property as the best option for ongoing disease management. We must protect our most productive banana growing region from the further spread of disease.”
For more information, contact the ballot administrator on 1300 737 880 or the ABGC’s Jim Pekin on 3278 4786. The ballot result will be announced on August 26.

Knuth slams Uber move DALRYMPLE MP Shane Knuth has come out firing against the State Government’s decision to legalise Uber. The ride sharing service will be legal from September 5, with the government announcing $100 million for taxi drivers to help deal with the expected disruption to their industry. But Mr Knuth said the change would lower the standards of the industry, and compromise the safety and fairness of Australian people and businesses. “These unlicensed taxi drivers don’t have the same protections of licensed operators, like a GPS and camera,” he said. “They’re putting their passengers and themselves in danger, and creating a very unfair playing field for other businesses.” Mr Knuth said making Uber legal could leave rural and regional Queensland residents without essential transport services. “The city has a taxi service that transports people with disabilities, but the high costs and regulations make it unviable, so the drivers make up for those losses during busy peak times,” he said. “However, if Uber enters the market and competes with these services, it will run the taxis into the ground and leave our vulnerable residents high and dry.” Mr Knuth said it was unfair for taxpayers to foot the $100 million assistance package, which would essentially help Uber dominate the market. “It’s a disgrace that the Australian people will have to pay for the government’s decision to give in to this multinational giant,” he said.

Fire station debate heats up By Michael Serenc QUEENSLAND Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) have construction plans for a controversial new fire station in Herberton ready to go – if approved by council or the State Government. Two of the Far North’s top firefighters met with local residents last Thursday in an attempt to allay concerns about the new $1.2 million fire station being plonked in the middle of Perkins St. As revealed by The Express last week, QFES secretly purchased a property on 38 Perkins St for the new station on August 11, much to the chagrin of several neighbouring residents who only found out through second hand sources. But Far Northern Region Acting Assistant Commissioner John Bolger defended the decision not to consult with residents before purchasing the property, saying QFES needed to lock down a site before proper consultation could begin. “We don’t engage with the community about building new facilities until we actually own the facility we’re talking about, otherwise we’re just talking pure theory,” he said. “It’s not a “nice to build” project, government have told us to build a new fire station in Herberton and we totally agree.” QFES Regional Development Director Superintendent Adrian Stafford added that since funding had been allocated for the new station in June’s State Budget, the development approval process was being accelerated. “However, we’re still bound by normal process and ministerial designation, such as the opportunity for the community to object,” he said. The QFES has already prepared a building template which would fit the proposed site, with the station also including facilities for SES training and room for two fire trucks. Commissioner Bolger said he would be ac-

tively engaging residents in further meetings and wanted to form a local committee to advise on the fire station’s aesthetics. “People in Herberton are proud of their township so I won’t approve any plans for a fire station unless the community are happy with the façade and the design,” he said. The Perkins St site was recommended for purchase by the Public Service Partnerships Agency (PSPA) after a search of possible locations around Herberton. “We like a fire station to be on a main thoroughfare, so we’re not turning out into quiet streets,” Commissioner Bolger said. “We also have very strict parameters about where we build as to the level of flooding. “This block obviously meets that criteria.” Commissioner Bolger added that the site’s size and central location in town also meant it
was ideal for a new station. But The Express understands the State Government surveyed several other sites for the new station last year. That included a block of land on the corner of Grant and Mary St and another on Smith Avenue, opposite Wild River Caravan Park. Strangely, 38 Perkins St was not part of that search. While he could not provide reasons as to why other locations in Herberton were turned down for the new fire station, Commissioner Bolger vowed to find out. As it stands, QFES can either gain approval to build the station via Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) or the State Government. If QFES opt for the council pathway, they would need to lodge a planning application for a material change of use for the site, followed by

public notification and consultation. But the State Government can bypass the council process if a minster declares the land as “community infrastructure”, which then kicks off a separate approval process. Commissioner Bolger said QFES intended the build the new station in Perkins St and any decision to shift the site would be “political”. Perkins St resident Lyn Northage, who lives directly across the road from where the proposed station will go, said she appreciated QFES had now started consultation but was wary of the battle ahead. “I don’t think we’ll make progress until QFES puts up the physical notice of redevelopment and a lot more people get to know about it,” she said. “As the immediate neighbours, the main thing we want to stress is we are not opposed to a new fire station, it’s just the location of it.”

SACRIFICE: Hundreds gathered on Sunday at the Rocky Creek War Memorial for Victory in the Pacific Day. FAMILIES, veterans and the community have helped to honour the Tablelands’ significant contribution to World War II with Victory in the Pacific Day. Held at Rocky Creek War Memorial on Sunday, hundreds of people gathered for a special ceremony marking 71 years since the end of the Pacific War. Amongst them was a veteran who was treated at the former Rocky Creek military hospital during the war. Tablelands Regional Council mayor Joe Paronella said the moving service helped highlight the important contribution of so many men and women during the war. “It’s our duty to honour the generations who have fought for our country,” he said. “If these men and women hadn’t done what they did through the war years, who knows what our history may have become in the North. “It was the morale of the people, there was a job to be done and they were the ones to do it.” Several plaques were also unveiled commemorating
various servicemen and women, with family members and representatives of the Army, Navy and Air Force also present. “What we rely on now for VP Day at Rocky Creek to keep continuing is the families of servicemen and women who keep attending,” Cr Paronella said. A RAAF C-17 transport performed a thundering flyover during the ceremony, delighting aviation buffs and stirring the emotions of many on the day. “It was a fantastic experience,” Cr Paronella said. Council will be working with the newly reformed Rocky Creek War Memorial committee to look at other potential projects for the site. “I’m certainly hoping that council will be able to do a lot of improvements to the Rocky Creek precinct itself,” Cr Paronella said. “It will go hand-in-hand to what the Rotary club with the restored igloo across the road.” PHOTOS Page 12

A BUMPER crowd and exciting line up of events has delighted organisers of Saturday’s Pink Ribbon Day garden party. Mareeba Lioness Club president Lyn Dyer said the annual event, which raises money for Cancer Council Queensland’s Marylyn Mayo Lodge, was embraced by locals with a crowd of about 230 people turning out at Mareeba Turf Club. “We had a tremendous crowd and were overwhelmed by the support we got from the public,” she said. “The ladies were all dressed in pink and it gave it a much more festive atmosphere. “Everyone was all in good spirits.” The event featured several activities on the day,

including a fashion parade, afternoon tea, dancing, live entertainment, Zumba exhibition, raffles and even a prize for Best Pink Outfit. Mrs Dyer said the multi-raffle draw featuring 52 prizes was a favourite amongst the crowd, as was this year’s theme – “Pretty in Pink”. “Lots of people got into it,” she said. “We’ve only had positive feedback. It was all very well received.” While the amount of money raised was still being tallied at the time of going to print, Mrs Dyer said she was hopeful of raising about $10,000 for the Cancer Council – similar to what the event had achieved in previous years. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
editorial@theexpressnewspaper.com.au
Centre needs rethink With respect to Barry Simpson’s letter (The Express, 3/8) concerning the proposed development by Reedlodge Pty Ltd, I wish to bring some issues to notice. Firstly there is land in trust. As reported in the media, this development is apparently wanting to take land in trust from the government. This land in trust is State Government land. Quote: “Subject to the Minister’s consent, trustees may lease or issue a permit over the reserve, provided the lease or permit is consistent with the purpose of the trust and would facilitate or enhance the purpose of the trust. The Minister may allow a trustee to issue a lease or permit inconsistent with the purpose of the trust provided the lease does not diminish the purpose of the trust and all further improvements are first approved by the Minister.”(DBR&M a Guide to Land Tenure under the Land Act 1994.) If the issue of trust were to be argued in a Court of Law, reference has to be made to the Oxford Dictionary or Macquarie Dictionary for the definition of trust, i.e.: “(1) reliance on the integrity, justice, etc., of a person, or on some quality or attribute of a thing; confidence, (2) confident expectation of something; hope, (6) the obligation or responsibility imposed on one in whom confidence or authority is placed; as position of trust, (8) something committed or entrusted to one, as an office, duty, etc.” It is my understanding James St is required for access to the proposed development. What consideration is to be given to

the amenity of the residents of James St, and surrounding residences? There are many examples, over many years, of where the amenity of residents has not been considered, or has been ignored, and development legislation has been flouted, during the approval process of various infrastructure projects. In my opinion, the development is not the issue. The issue is the attitude of development at all costs. This has been seen in land subdivision approvals when we were with the TRC, and prior to that, when we were with the MSC. The Express posed an article in the paper August 10, 2016 about the number of vacant business premises in Mareeba (and Atherton). Logic would suggest the erection of a new shopping centre would do nothing for the local economy, suffice to say, contractors, if they were from Mareeba, would benefit in the construction phase of a proposed new shopping centre. Question is, will the proposed new shopping centre bleed businesses away from the already struggling CBD exacerbating the already depleted occupancy rate? What is council doing to encourage business to expand and develop in our current CBD? Would it not be logical to ensure our present businesses become prosperous and fill the vacant shops first, before embarking on a new infrastructure plan, or is the attitude of our council “development at all costs”? THE recent purchase of residential property at 38 Perkins St, Herberton by the Department of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, to build a new fire station on a residential block, has taken local home owners and residents, the TRC Mayor, fellow Councillors and Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth by complete surprise. The impact it will have on other properties in the area will be irreversible, granted that the Tablelands Regional Council did not purchase this land therefore they are not responsible for the home owners loss of value to their properties. However, will the State Government step up and become accountable for this miscarriage of justice? Whilst all the local residents including the ones directly affected support a new fire station for Herberton and the surrounding areas. We do not believe, however, that QFES has selected the
most suitable area, unless they intend to take away the local tennis court and amenities land also to support the future needs of the community. What would be wrong to utilise the area already located at Flaggy Creek Rd, Wondecla where the current rural fire station operates, by extending the facilities and infrastructure and combining two facilities as one? Think of the benefit this would bring for the future, with larger premises, flat land, the airport right next door ready to handle emergencies. At any time, not just during times of crisis or motor vehicle accidents, the helicopter could land safely and all with little or no impact to residential properties. Discussions were held over a year ago where other sites were discussed, for example a Recreation Reserve Land in Smith Ave opposite the caravan park at the beginning of town, is a nice level block. With surrounding properties on acreage the fire station would not be in as close proximity to other residential blocks. The capital works required and environmental assessments could have been done on this parcel of land, with easy access in and out of town. There were and still are several other options that could have been discussed with all interested parties. For example, several unallocated State land sites near the refuse station off the Herberton Petford Rd could have been discussed for their suitability. Another solution would be to transfer the newly acquired property into another State Department, i.e. Department of Housing and utilise this area and build pensioner flats or emergency housing, both which is sadly lacking at present in Herberton. As you have read the article in The Express today, the Assistant Commissioner QFES John Bolger and the Director of Regional Planning for the QFES Mr Adrian Stafford have spoken to local residents and their families affected by this purchase. We, as members of the public and the local community are well aware of our right to lodge written submissions once the redevelopment application is lodged with the Tablelands Regional Council and we will work together to find a solution for the current location. If you would like to find out more o call Lyn Northage on 0400 795 280 or email lnorthage@bigpond.com Lyn Northage, Herberton
Labor fails to lift state In the last State Budget, Curtis Pitt shattered a clear election promise and increased taxes – not just on foreign property buyers but on all Queenslanders.
His decision to slap on a great big foreign investment tax will cost blue collar Queenslanders working in the construction industry – tradies, sparkies, painters, concreters – their jobs. It has already dented confidence in the industry, as highlighted by the most recent Property Council of Australia survey. The decline in confidence experienced in Queensland in the last 12 months has been more pronounced than any other state, and the Property Council directly attributed it to Curtis Pitt’s broken tax promise. The chorus of criticism following the Mr Pitt’s decision has been overwhelming – from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland, the Property Council, the Urban Development Institute of Australia, Master Builders and many others. These groups are particularly upset considering Mr Pitt stood alongside these groups and ruled out this exact tax only 12 months ago. The reasons for Mr Pitt’s tax grab are obvious. He is incapable of properly managing a budget, and after his $4 billion raid on public servants’ super he’s run out of hollow logs to raid. Now he’s flagged he wants to have a ‘conversation’ with Queenslanders about higher taxes. Queenslanders know when Curtis Pitt wants to talk it only ends up with them paying more. Scott Emerson, Shadow Treasurer
Flying doctors need you Most people know of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Firstly, this organisation is known as one the top charities, having low administration costs. We know the RFDS is used for accidents, such as the Ravenshoe cafe blast, for transportation. It is also for seriously ill patients and is free to all. The Near and Far Auxiliary covers a huge area from the Atherton Tablelands to Hughenden, Charters Towers and Townville and all point the coast and cairns. There is good membership with members scattered throughout the vast area. Recently, at their AGM, several have stood down after three very successful years. We now appeal for more members. Membership is not expensive at only $10 per year. More importantly we are seeking people who would be willing to give some of their valuable time to take on a committee position. Review by Louise Keller: Gripping from the outset, the most powerful thing about this tense action thriller is that it is intensely personal with a great sense of high stakes and risks. This is Matt Damon's fifth film as Jason Bourne (he is also credited as producer), and here Paul Greengrass, who has directed four of them) has penned the screenplay with his editor, Christopher Rouse. Driven by character, this is a film with scale: far flung locations, extravagant action sequences and a central plot that connects the present to the past, unravelling secrets that rebound on the connections between the characters. Technology is key throughout, with CTTV footage, GPS tracking, remote downloads and communications playing an integral part in the multi-pronged narrative. It all starts with a security breach from Iceland after which time, the alert is on to find and track down Jason Bourne, who has been off the grid for years. The
all-familiar Treadstone files are once again unearthed from the aptly named Black Operations folder and Julia Styles is back as Nicky Parsons, eager to share her latest discovery with Bourne - about his original recruitment and the critical involvement by his father. Highlights are two chase sequences, the first of which takes place at night in the streets of Rome, where crowd protests and police barricades form the backdrop as Bourne's motor bike screams up and down flights of steps. As for the final lengthy chase sequence in Las Vegas, it is as showy as the ostentatious city itself, when a black sedan and SWAT truck perform acrobatics on the brightly lit strip, mowing down cars as though they were blades of grass, and ending at the Riviera Hotel, with an incredible stunt in which the car defies gravity and crash lands on the truck's roof. I sat with my mouth open throughout this sequence, which is an apt lead up to the final confrontation between Bourne and the Asset. If you have followed the latest Bourne action franchise, you will not want to miss this edge of seat thriller, which guarantees it will not be the last.

The LAND
Canegrowers go green for environment A GROUP of Tablelands canefarmers are doing their bit for the environment after gaining eco-friendly accreditation. Rajinder Singh, Claude Santucci and Jon Dixon are the first in the region to become accredited under industry group Canegrowers’ Smartcane Best Management Practice (BMP) program. The program provides cane farmers with information on how to use the latest technology and farming practices on offer to improve productivity, profitability and sustainability. Mr Santucci said he had taken up the program about 14 months ago and while the financial outlay for new equipment was significant, the benefits were undeniable. “It highlights most growers’ lack of record-keeping, because part of BMP is having good, recorded data of all your farm inputs, such as chemical nutrients and land preparation,” he said. “With having all that data recorded, you can always go back, check what you’ve done, what you haven’t done, whether you’ve seen improvements or benefits, that sort of stuff.” Mr Santucci said with the aid of that data, he could reduce his farm’s environmental impact while still maintaining a “commercial operation”. “The aim of the whole program is to be environmentally friendly and environ-
mentally sustainable,” he said. “It’s really about being aware of the environment and protecting our environment while trying to maintain a commercial operation.” Mr Santucci produces about 11,000 tonnes of cane a year from two farms at Mareeba and Emerald Creek. While the program is not compulsory for cane farmers, Mr Santucci said commercial companies were starting to favour farms which used environmentally friendly practices. “In our sugar marketing, a lot of international companies such as Coca-Cola, who buys a lot of sugar around the world, they are now starting to demand they will only source their sugar from countries or producers who can prove they are producing their sugar in an environmentally friendly –manner,” he said. “That’s a pretty strong incentive for us as growers.” Mr Santucci added that farmers who got involved in the program now had the chance to fine-tune it before the state government potentially adopted it as a compulsory set of regulations. The BMP program is partially funded by the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection. For more information, head to www. smartcane.com.au
Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association president Joe Moro is encouraging local farmers to nominate in the annual Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award.
Farmers urged to get creative By Michael Serenc INNOVATIVE farmers are being urged to nominate for an award recognising their progress. The annual Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award aims to recognise “outstanding innovation and exceptional leadership” in the horticultural industry across the Atherton Tablelands and Lakeland area. Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (MDFVGA) president Joe Moro
suGar rEPOrts MOssMaN MiLL CrushiNG statistiCs WEEk 10 Mossman Mill processed just under 44,000 tonnes of cane for the week at an average crushing rate of 339 tonnes / hour. Plant availability was below budget for the week with a planned maintenance day scheduled as well as some intermittent stoppages. Cane supply improved during the week with shortfalls in supply being less frequent. Crush statistiCs: • Mossman tonnes crushed for the week: 43,950 tonnes • CCS for week: 11.08 • Total cane crushed to date: 263,208 tonnes • CCS average to date: 10.68 • 2016 crop estimate: 850,000 tonnes

said the area had many rising stars in the horticultural field. “Charlie was one of the pioneers of the industry,” he said. “There’s a lot of innovation in the region and we get some very good nominations. “Everyone who gets nominated are all very worthy of the award… They’ve all done something very important in the past 12 months or in some cases, the past 20 years.” Mr Moro said the award recognised individual farmers and he hoped to eventually see a female
winner. “There’s a lot of women doing some wonderful things in the industry,” he said. “It’s not just about the growing side, it’s about being innovative and also about taking on issues on behalf of industries within the horticultural sector.” The award’s winner will be announced at the MDFVGA dinner at Mareeba International Club on September 16. Nominations close on August 24.

Young Finn splashes out for charity GOOD STUFF: Mareeba teen Finn Weaver swam 30km from Green Island to Cairns last week to raise money for the Indie Rose Foundation.
MAREEBA’S Finn Weaver doesn’t know the meaning of the word “quit”. The 14-year-old was stalked by sea snakes, zapped by his electronic shark repellent device and almost threw in the towel with 6km to go on his 30km swim from Green Island to Yorkeys Knob last Wednesday. But through all that adversity, the story of an inspirational little toddler was all Finn needed to see him through. “I was inspired by Indie Rose’s story and I just wanted to do something for the community,” he
said. Young Indie Rose Taurima lost her battle with Leukaemia in May 2014, prompting the start of the Indie Rose Foundation the following year. Finn has raised a whopping $3200 so far for the foundation, which offers financial support to families with children suffering any serious medical condition. Tired, sore and hungry after his mammoth nine-hour swim, Finn said it was all worth it after two years of training. “It was a feeling of accomplishment,” he said.
“My family has supported me every step of the way. “Don’t give up and follow your dream.” Finn, who is part of the Mareeba Wildcats Swimming Club, praised his mentor Cameron Keith who achieved a similar feat back in 2014 for the Fred Hollows Foundation. Mr Keith said he was in awe of Finn’s accomplishment. “It’s an amazing feat of endurance, especially at his young age,” he said. “He was sick a few weeks before he was plan-
ning to swim and…the conditions weren’t ideal today but he managed to focus on his swim and accomplish it. “There should be good things to come for him in the future.” Finn’s father Bradley also thanked his son’s boat support crew on the day – Rob Miller, Harry Phillott and Chris White – as well as Green Island Resort and Quicksilver Group for providing accommodation. To donate to Finn’s fundraiser, head to www. gofundme.com/yt7eat2s

The Mt Carbine Bull and Bronc Ride once again gave spectators a night of non-stop, heart-pounding thrills and spills. The annual event, held at the Mt Carbine Sports Grounds on Saturday, had thousands on the edge of their seats cheering on riders from across the Far North on prize bulls and broncs with $6000 in prize money up for the taking. In the bull rides, it was the bulls who won in the end – beast 3, man 1. Event president Alan Pedersen said the night was a huge success with some of the best rodeo action seen in the North. “It was a great night and huge crowd with some very impressive rides, but the bulls were just too strong,” he said. In the saddle broncs local cowboy Brandin Tilse took out the open saddle bronc ride and the bushman’s saddle bronc was a crowd favourite with Justin McKellar winning. All 10 events on the night went off well, including all the juniors with Leith Malone taking out the junior bull ride. Pedersen attributes the success to the high-quality competition and the small, close up arena, as well as the night
time which all adds to the Bull Ride’s success and popularity. “It’s a close up, action packed event and I think that’s why people love it,” he said. “We have also been working hard this year on the facilities by putting in new backyards and ramps and a secretary’s box, which all helps to make the event even better.” After the action in the arena wrapped up the crowd was kept enterained late into the night with local band “Kurdaz Country Band”. RESULTS – MEN’S BULL: No one rode time. MEN’S SADDLE BRONC: 1st Brandin Tilse, 2nd Andrien Shaban, 3rd Toby Pedersen. NOVICE BULL: No one rode time. BUSHMAN’S SADDLE BRONC: 1st Justin McKellar, 2nd Kyle Adams, 3rd Toby Pedersen. LADIES STEER: No one rode time. JUNIOR BULL: 1st Leith Malone, 2nd Patrick Hart. JUVENILE STEER: 1st Karl Hocking, 2nd Leith Malone. JUNIOR STEER 7 – 12: 1st Jake Simpson, 2nd Travis Koolatah. CALF 4-6: 1st George Musgrave, = 2nd Shirani Adams, Jackson Francis. Roosters dominate Brothers
Bulls back to winning ways

victory against Innisfail was laid down by a strong first half performance with Jame Wilesmith, Damian Wildman and Danny Stowers scoring first-half goals to set up the win. The club’s youth team fought back from 3-0 down at halftime against United to draw level at 3-3 with 25 minutes to play, and were unlucky not to have recorded a remarkable comeback in the dying moments. The ladies side, continuing to show marked improvement, went into the break against Innisfail at 0-0, but ran out of legs in the second half to go down 3-0. On Friday night in Mareeba, there were two big wins for the club, with the Youth B side pushing for a finals spot after fighting back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against Leichhardt. They will now have to face Atherton to secure a finals spot. Meanwhile, the club’s second division men’s side made light work of the Dimbulah Barras, winning 3-0 with a home goal from Barra Michael Hoskin and goals from Jamie Wilesmith and Angelo Tatti Junior sealing the win. That means a home derby against the Atherton Eagles this weekend to set up a premiership decider. The Bulls return home this weekend in all grades, with two Tableland derbies Friday night and the Edge Hill Tigers coming to town on Saturday.
THE Mareeba Bulls have rekindled their lost form after two hard-fought but important wins last week. On the back of two successive losses, including a 4-1 thumping at the hands of Leichhardt, Mareeba began their resurgence with a 1-0 win against Southside Comets in a catch up game last Wednesday night at Edmonton. Then then travelled south to face Innisfail United on Saturday. Battered and bruised from Wednesday night’s tough game, the Bulls dug deep and were rewarded with John Ghensi scoring his first goal in the men’s premier division. Robert Pendenza followed up with a second to close out the game 2-0. The double victories now put the Mareeba in second spot on the ladder. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj explained at this time of the season, it was important to get the three points. “It was not our best performance, but it was our third game in seven days,” he said. “For a couple of the boys it was their fourth, so to get through it with maximum points now sets us up for a top two finish and we can now focus on the finals." The Bulls reserve grade side also looks to finish the year in the top four with another hard-fought 3-1 win against Innisfail. With two games remaining, the reserves can secure a finals spot this weekend if they beat Edge Hill. The
The Atherton Roosters have produced another top home-ground performance to earn a classy 30-14 win over Cairns Brothers – and in the process ensuring they remain in the 2016 finals mix. On Friday night at Roosters Stadium, the home team produced some strong defence and attack and it didn’t take long for the Roosters to score their first try through winger Jacob Rivett, after only three minutes. Brothers did reply soon after, but the Roosters kicked on to set up a 20-8 lead going into the break. In the second half the Roosters continued to wreck the Brothers attack with strong defence, despite conceding another try late in the game. Roosters coach Dean Howard said the strong start from the Roosters had helped them dominate on the scoreboard. “We got on the board early and kept going for the full eighty minutes,” Howard said. “Our defence in the middle shut them down and we had plenty of numbers in the tackles which forced Brothers to come up with a lot of errors.” The win moves the Roosters back into equal third place with Brothers on the points table. Results of other Cairns District Rugby League first grade games – Mossman 28 upset Innisfail 24, Mareeba 96 crunched Yarrabah 20, Edmonton 36 defeated Suburbs 26, Tully 48 downed Kangaroos 20. The points table with two rounds remaining: Innisfail 36, Ivanhoes 32, Atherton 27, Brothers 27, Mossman 26, Tully 24, Edmonton 20, Kangaroos 12, Mareeba 12, Suburbs 11, Yarrabah 11.
