Fresh faces join experienced team at MSC
Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) held their first Ordinary Council meeting last Wednesday morning, with all councillors officially sworn in. Under the guidance of Mayor Tom Gilmore, incumbent councillors ‘Nipper’ Brown, Alan Pedersen and Mary Graham will be joined by Angela Toppin, Lenore Wyatt and Kevin Davies. Despite the fresh faces, it appears to be business as usual at the MSC, with Mayor Gilmore committed to the long-term development of the Shire. Land custodians By Justin Fris
I
F you are an avid gardener around your home, how would you feel if one day you were informed by the State Government that you can no longer legally mow or develop your own garden? Substitute ‘home’ with ‘farm’ (along with a few other specifics) and you have the current situation looming for landowners across the Far North. A Bill inspired by Deputy Premier Jackie Trad (Vegetation Management (Reinstatement) and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2016) has
been fast tracked through parliament in recent weeks and has the potential to stifle land development in our region. The Bill has been presented to the State-based Agriculture and Environment committee for consideration, with landowners having until April 25 to provide a personal submission to them. Effectively, the proposed legislation would: • Tighten the vegetation management framework for controlling land clearing in Queensland (End provisions for High Value Agriculture and Irrigated High Value Agriculture) • Limit the clearing of riparian vegetation, especially in the Great Barrier Reef catchments;
and broaden the protection of regrowth vegetation in watercourse areas to the Burnett-Mary, Eastern Cape York and Fitzroy Great Barrier Reef catchments; • Reinstate the protection of high value regrowth on freehold and indigenous land; • Remove provisions which permit clearing applications for high value agriculture and irrigated high value agriculture; • Reinstate compliance provisions for the reverse onus of proof and remove the ‘mistake of fact’ defence for vegetation clearing offences. Reinstate the application of the riverine protection permit framework to the destruction of
vegetation in a watercourse, lake or spring • Reinstate certain environmental offset requirements The proposed legislation has been universally panned by local landowners, members of the LNP and both KAP crossbenchers. Independent Member for Cook Billy Gordon has initially sided with the Palaszczuk Government on the matter. Peter Spies – a passionate landowner from East Barron – pulled no punches in his analysis of the situation for landowners across the region. “Landowners are custodians of their land,” he said. he said. “I spoke with the volunteers about the new venture with the Chamber and how it will work. “A few raised concerns initially, as they thought the Chamber may try and take over the Heritage Centre and we would lose our identity – but once it was explained that this wouldn’t happen, they were very accepting of it.”

TRC announces new meeting dates THE Tablelands Regional Council held a special statutory meeting last Tuesday morning, with councillors briefed by Mayor Joe Paronella on a variety of matters. Along with the appointment of Katrina Spies as Deputy Mayor, several other changes were discussed and implemented. One change will be the time of month when ordinary meetings will be held. Meetings will now be held on 2nd and 4th Thursday from 9am (as opposed to the traditional 1st and 3rd of every month). Mayor Paronella told The Express that the decision to move the meetings to the 2nd and 4th week of each month was to assist council staff in their collation of vital data. “The change will allow time for staff to collate end of month statistics and present them to Council in a timely manner,” he said. “This will assist Council in making informed decisions.” He added: “The ‘Standing Orders’ will be amended by officers to reinstate ‘General Business’ and this will be presented to Council at the next available meeting.”
Speakers on the night included: Psychologist Jenell Wilkie, Dr Vered Gordon from the Black Dog Institute, Psychiatrist Dr Maree Ploetz, Mrs Margie Bestmann, Dr Grant Manypeney and Clinical Nurse Sasha Black.
Packed house for mental health night By Justin Fris BARELY a spare seat was available in the International Club last Thursday evening, as Mareeba hosted a special community mental health information night. Organised by Carl Portella and facilitated on the evening by Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro, the evening was significant for several reasons. Firstly, it provided a fitting tribute for the late (and great) Dr Mark Bestmann. A revered member of Mareeba’s community, Dr Bestmann touched the lives of many and this occasion highlighted his extraordinary impact. Secondly, it provided clarity and information regarding mental health. Several keynote speakers, members of the community and Dr Bestmann’s wife Margie gave heartfelt insights into their experiences with mental health illnesses to the audience. Ages from each end of the spectrum attended the evening. This was particularly significant, as mental illness doesn’t discriminate age, gender, race or background. Mrs Bestmann gave a sterling presentation and outlined her desire for a new support centre for those battling mental illnesses in our community.
“Our town in Mareeba needs to create a healthy community that supports recovery, social inclusion and diminishes discrimination,” she said. “How do we go about doing that? Learn and share facts about depression. Get to know people with a personal experience with depression. “Speak up in protest when family, friends or colleagues display false beliefs and negative stereotypes. “Offer support if someone is unwell. Talk openly about your experiences with depression.” Mrs Bestmann added: “Please, Mareeba, lets unite by being proactive and making a difference in our community. “My own goal is to establish a support centre in Mareeba for the partners and the parents of family members who have been diagnosed with depression or anxiety. “It will provide a place for loved ones to come and have an informal, respectful gathering over coffee or a cup of tea – and connect with other people walking the same road.” Other keynote presenters on the evening included Dr Vered Gordon (Black Dog Institute), Sascha Black (Clinical Nurse – Mareeba Hospital), Janell Wilkie (local psychologist), Dr Grant Manypeney (local GP), Dr

Maree Ploetz (Psychiatrist), and Jeff Crofts (Australian Rotary Health). All presenters shared their insights into mental health from the viewpoint of their field, which covered symptom recognition and support alternatives or techniques to subdue an anxiety attack. The evening concluded with four local residents (Brett Camp, Rena Ceola, Michael Alba and Genio Quintieri) who took the courageous step of sharing their mental health journey to the audience. It is hoped that the community will move forward from the evening and productively tackle mental illness in our region. If you – or someone you know of – is currently battling a mental illness, help and support is available. Some of these options include: Mareeba Medical Clinic (ph 4092 2877), Amaroo Medical Centre (ph 4092 5900) Sharpe Psychology (ph 4092 6664) and Mareeba Hospital (ph 4092 9333). Each member of the audience was provided with a handy magnet, with contact information for all services across the Tablelands listed. The Express Newspaper has several available in our office free of charge for those who wish to collect one.

$18 million in grant funding from the State and Federal Government’s has paved the way for a series of major upgrades to the Mareeba airport.
Airport begins to take shape After receiving two grants - $13 million from the Queensland State Government and $5 million from the Federal Government - design work has commenced on the Mareeba airport upgrades, with a report setting out all progress to date. The final draft concept layout of the Mareeba
airport (incorporating all the components within the funding agreements between the Commonwealth and State Governments) was made public at the first Mareeba Shire Council meeting last Wednesday. The new draft concept identifies the main
components of the upgrades, including: runway and taxiway extensions and strengthening, upgrading the existing roadways to the Vicary Road lease areas, widening of Vicary Road and Ray Road and the development of the western lease area for the development of additional hangar and
taxiway areas. Water supply and sewerage services will also be included in the development along with the refurbishment of lighting and security fencing. Ratepayers interested in viewing the plans can do so at the Mareeba Shire Council office.
l i c n u o C r u o y Meet Those two years are now behind us and we now embark on a full-term four years to capitalise on the work that has gone before and to deliver those projects which are now solidly embedded as sentinel projects for the betterment and long-term economic growth and stability of our shire. Your Council looks forward with great anticipation to building on the foundations of a sound corporate structure which has already delivered to us a concise vision and efficiency of delivery of the services which are so crucial to a growing and prosperous community.
MAYOR'S MESSAGE: The past two years have been an exciting time in the development of the Mareeba Shire Council. It was a time for careful planning, hard work and on occasions, very difficult decisions. I take this moment to pay tribute to the Councillors of that first Mareeba Shire Council, and offer my personal gratitude to former Councillors Deputy Mayor Jenny Jensen, Allan Holmes and Karen Ewin, who were important in this process and all of whom have left their own indelible mark on the organisation.
I welcome to the Council Councillors Angela Toppin, Kevin Davies and Lenore Wyatt, who bring undoubted enthusiasm and a blend of life experience which will most certainly enrich and inform the decisions of Council and support the knowledge and experience of continuing Councillors Deputy Mayor Alan Pedersen, Nipper Brown and Mary Graham.

Don’t tell us what we can do with our land From Page 1 “Farmers are environmentalists at heart. “Something that the Chardonnay sipping, goat cheese eating types who live in Ashgrove, Mt Coot-tha and South Brisbane don’t understand. “They are happy to tuck into a juicy rib fillet at the Pineapple or Normanby Hotel and enjoy all of the food on the table because it tastes good, but care little for the landowner who has provided the meal. “This will increase runoff and be bad for the reef through less ground cover. “It is not trees that protect the reef – it is ground cover. “This is a well known soil conservation principle, outlined in the 2015 Soil Conservation Guidelines for Queensland. Besides, most of the new development is in the Gulf.” Mr Spies added: “Labor’s laws are punitive and do nothing for northern economic and social development. “Under these laws, there will be a reverse onus of proof of landowners, if suspected of illegal tree clearing. “It will go back to the days of ‘Dob in a Farmer’ and the tree police. “This is just kicking the can at farmers. Farmers and landowners love the land – they are the true custodians of it.” Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth echoed Mr Spies’ comments and said he grew tired of this ‘political football’. “I’m sick of this ‘political football’,” he said. “We had finally got the legislation right and now the ALP will undo all of what we have

achieved in the last 15 years. “I personally believe we are currently underdeveloped. The evidence is there. The government is reintroducing laws that haven’t worked in the past.” Mr Knuth confirmed that he had met with Mr Gordon in recent weeks on the matter, but chose not to elaborate on the nature of these discussions. Property rights consultant David Kempton also believes there is no need for the current vegetation management legislation to be changed. “In my view, there is no need to amend the Bill – or even compromise it,” he said. “We are sitting on the edge of the world’s largest food market and effectively we are tying our hands behind our backs. “The biggest land clearing operation in

Queensland encompassed only .275% of the bio region. Already it has resulted in 85 new jobs, with the potential to expand up to 200 jobs and generating $180 million annually for the state economy. “All this Bill is about is appeasing the Greens. There is no science or consultation behind the Government’s rationale.” The Express also contacted Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch and Mr Gordon for comment; however both responses were not received by our print deadline. SEASONED Mareeba Shire councillor Alan Pedersen (pictured) was appointed Mareeba Shire Council Deputy Mayor last Wednesday morning. Cr Pedersen has been involved in local government for 11 years, with a wealth of business experience in his keeping. A hard worker with a friendly personality, Cr Pedersen received word from his colleagues that they would support his appointment as Deputy Mayor. “It’s an honour to take on the position,” he said. “Over the past 11 years, I’ve learnt a lot and been able to understand council processes and work closely with council staff.”
Cr Pedersen polled heavily in the recent election (7,236 votes) and it isn’t difficult to see why. He relates to ratepayers and ratepayers can relate to him. “The thing I love about being a councillor is helping to get things done,” he said. “Whether that’s being involved with infrastructure upgrades, maintaining roads or fixing up a footpath into cottages so elderly residents have easier access. “Being a councillor is all about trying to make improvements to people’s lives without hitting their pockets too hard. “It’s a very gratifying position.” Cr Pedersen said that he had a positive working relationship with Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore and that both men were
committed for the betterment of the Mareeba Shire. Since the formation of the new council, Cr Pedersen said he had sat in on meetings where new incoming councillors (Angela Toppin, Lenore Wyatt and Kevin Davies) had been briefed on local government matters. “We’ve recently started progress on our Capital Works projects,” Cr Pedersen said. “Additionally, CEO Peter Franks has met with all new councillors and briefed them on the various do’s and don’ts of local government.”

DIVISION 5 Tablelands Regional Councillor Katrina Spies was voted in unanimously as Deputy Mayor last Tuesday morning. Nominated by Division 1 councillor Kate Eden, Cr Spies will join Mayor Joe Paronella and Anthony Ball (appointed Acting Mayor) in leadership positions of the new council. A hardworking individual with an open mind, Katrina said she was excited, but acutely aware of her responsibilities. “It has been very humbling and I’m very excited,” she said. “To be voted in unanimously by such a tal-
ented group of individuals is very special. “You look at Annette (Haydon), for example, and she has a lot of experience working in council and it feels reassuring that the councillors have put their trust in me.” Cr Spies added: “I’m aware of the responsibilities that come with being appointed as Deputy Mayor and I know I have a fair bit to live up to.” One common theme in discussion with all new TRC councillors has been the increased level of openness in the boardroom. There has been no conflict, no mudslinging and all councillors ap-
pear united in making our region a better place to live. “I’ve been really encouraged by our initial interactions together,” Cr Spies said. “None of us really knew each other that well prior to the election. “Joe’s really been leading by example and we aware that we need to earn the respect and trust of the ratepayers. Both simply are not given away.” Prior to her election success, Katrina forged a successful career in business. Amongst many achievements, she was the CEO of QITE employment services, helping unemployed clients on their journey for successful employment. Such experience will be invaluable for the current council, who have a major ageing population issue across the Southern Tablelands. Together with Cr Bronwyn Voyce, both councillors will add a fresh and realistic understanding to Council about both increasing youth involvement and minimising unemployment across the TRC. Since being elected on March 19, Cr Spies has spoken with ratepayers within her division and has welcomed their feedback. “It’s (the support) been a bit overwhelming,” she said.

Students raise money for brave Demi By Justin Fris A teenager given a heart-breaking diagnosis has been given help to complete a ‘bucket list’ of activities, thanks to some outstanding Mareeba students. Two months ago Demi Bettini, from Babinda, was told that cancer had spread through her body and there was nothing more doctors could do. Moved to help her complete these activities with her family, 20 Mareeba State High School students will complete the gruelling Great Wheelbarrow Race next month in a bid to raise over $2000 for Demi’s bucket list. Some of the activities include swimming with whale sharks at Monkey Mia in Western Australia, flying in a hot air balloon, visiting Uluru, cuddling a lion, seeing snow and riding on the ‘Eye of Brisbane’.
Last week Demi made the trip to Mareeba with her parents to meet the students fundraising in her honour. The visit may have been a small step in her arduous journey, however Demi returned home with 20 new friends – and her smile told a story in itself. Demi’s father Darrin said that Demi was initially diagnosed in 2014, after noticing several pains in her leg. “Demi was diagnosed with cancer in September 2014,” he said. “She had bad pains in her leg and we had an MRI done. “From that, they found the cancer – and basically, we had two days to get to Brisbane for chemotherapy. “Then in January 2015, she was operated on and they removed majority of her femur (major bone in your upper leg) and they replaced it with
a titanium prosthesis.” Mr Bettini added: “Once she finished chemotherapy, they found three lesions in her lung, where the cancer had spread. “In late-2015, they operated and removed one of the lesions – and she was declared ‘clear’. The tumour that they removed was definitely cancer. “December of last year, she had another scan and she was all-clear, however at the end of February this year, we went back for another scan and we found that she had five lesions in the lung. “Her lymph nodes were all inflamed and inoperable. It was too delicate of a position to operate. Chemotherapy they found hasn’t been successful “They’ve told us there is nothing much medically that can be done.” Both teams said they had been aware of Demi’s journey for awhile and were very happy to get behind such a special cause.
After Demi was introduced to everyone, she received an impromptu singing performance from local singer (and MSHS student), Kiara Cabassi. This was warmly received by everyone, especially given the nature of the occasion. From then on, friendships were formed and laughter shone through on a momentous morning for all in attendance – for a variety of reasons. Demi and her family said that they would travel to the Tablelands for a portion of the race, where they will spend time with members of both teams during the race. “It’s all about keeping positive,” Demi said. If you would like to follow Demi’s journey via social media, please join the ‘Demi’s Cancer Journey’ group on Facebook. If you are interested in attending or donating to one of Demi’s upcoming fundraisers, please contact Fionna Lane via email at: bfk@bfk.lane.com

Christine Doan (centre) with the Tablelands Youth Movement crowdfunding enthusiasts.
A long awaited, interactive crowdfunding (online fundraising) opportunity is about to hit Malanda; and all interested individuals are invited to attend a hands-on learning experience. Monday, April 18 is the first of a two night event, which kicks off at the Malanda Hotel Ballroom. Learn the ‘why’ and ‘what’ of crowdfunding in an interactive theoretical session. The following evening will see participants return for a “roll-up-your-sleeves-and-get-started” session - which will help individuals and teams build up the ‘how’ of their very own crowdfund in a mentored learning experience. Local innovation champion Christine Doan will facilitate both evenings of this two-part workshop. Both evenings open at 5.30pm for a 5.45pm
start and will run for approximately two hours. It is strongly recommended to attend both sessions as the second session builds on the information from the first session. Ms Doan said: “Crowdfunding is a bit like a chook raffle on the internet. It may sound mysterious but it’s just a way of gathering funds for a worthy cause or a great business idea. “There are many tips and tricks to learn and those will be explored first in theory on Monday and then applied to your own ideas on Tuesday. Never tried crowdfunding? Come and have a go.” Tickets are available on Eventbrite ($10 per session) or at the door ($15) ($15) or go online, via: www.eventbrite.com.au/e/crowdfunding-workshopmalanda-tickets-24330006705

Queensland Labor Treasurer Curtis Pitt recently demanded the Turnbull LNP Government make legislation to establish the Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund (NAIF) a priority before the next federal election. Notwithstanding Curtis Pitt’s hyperventilation, what opportunities for the NAIF will the Turnbull Government find in North Queensland if it does get the Bill through the Federal Parliament? The answer is, too few, thanks to the Palaszczuk Labor Government. At present, Labor has Bills in the Queensland Parliament to roll back legislation by the former LNP Government to encourage eco-tourism, provide water for new irrigation precincts and help landholders manage vegetation to expand the agriculture sector. Curtis Pitt’s hypocrisy is rank. The contrast could not be starker. While the LNP has made the development of Northern Australia a priority, the Palaszczuk Labor Government is moving to deny North Queensland our best opportunities to grow. Andrew Cripps MP Shadow Minister for Northern Development Member for Hinchinbrook
Lee Long is not happy Doug Seawright (The Express 6/4/16) is entitled to his opinion on what I have or have not done during my political career. However, the facts are that Tablelanders voted - overwhelmingly - for me in three State elections; and also when I ran for Mayor in 2012, so I must have done something right. Mr Seawright should, at the very least, get his facts right in relation to my attendance at an upcoming conference in Darwin. Instead of being outright untruthful in stating that my ‘expenses will be paid’ for, let me make it absolutely clear that I shall be personally paying for my own travel and accommodation expenses, as I understand Geoff Stocker will also be doing. At least we have a vision for development on the Southern Atherton Tablelands.

I expect an apology from both Mr Seawright and the Editor of The Express Newspaper for printing such grossly incorrect information without first, at least, seeking clarification. Rosa Lee Long, ATHERTON
Impressed with LNP candidate for Kennedy Recently, I was lucky enough to attend an introductory breakfast with the family, friends and supporters of Jonathan Pavetto, the endorsed LNP candidate for the seat of Kennedy at the upcoming Federal Election. It was held in a very pleasant environment on a cane farm in the Ingham district. I found Jonathan to be a very astute, switched on young man. He is from a farming background with a tertiary education in agronomy. The seat of Kennedy covers a huge area with mining, farming and grazing as the main industries. He convinced me that he is well and truly abreast of all of the problems facing those industries, and those of the people living in the electorate. He is well and truly aware of the job at hand in competing for the seat with Bob Katter. Bob has done a good job in representing the people of Kennedy over many years, but has always been hamstrung in achieving any of his goals. As an independent, he does not have a voice in the party room of either party. Like it or not, the only way to achieve satisfactory results in politics is to be a member of either of the major parties. Bob Katter talks a lot in the media, mainly because of frustration about not being able to achieve any of his policies. Johnathan Pavetto on the other hand, will be able to get things done if he is elected, as he is a member of the current government. I would encourage people to make the effort and meet with this guy as he travels throughout the electorate. You may be as encouraged as I was, for the future of our great country. Proposed changes to Queensland’s vegetation management laws Changes to Queensland’s vegetation laws are being considered by the Queensland Parliament. These changes are proposed to ensure that Queensland’s vegetation management framework aligns with the State Government’s commitment to protect the Great Barrier Reef and to reduce carbon emissions. If the Bill is passed in its current form, some changes will be effective from the date the Bill was introduced – 17 March 2016. It is important to note that existing development approvals and PMAVs are not affected by the Bill. Similarly, PMAV applications and development applications that were properly made before 17 March 2016 are not affected by this Bill. However, if you intend to do any of the following activities, it is recommended you contact us to ensure you fully understand the implications of the proposed laws: • lodge an application to clear for the purpose of high-value agriculture or irrigated high-value agriculture • clear proposed high value regrowth vegetation on freehold or Indigenous land • clear vegetation within 50 meters of a watercourse in the Burnett-Mary, Eastern Cape York and Fitzroy Great Barrier Reef catchments • lodge an application for a PMAV over vegetation proposed for protection. A property map showing areas proposed for protection can be downloaded using your Lot on Plan number/s.

Tracey O’Shea and Fiona Parker (from Mareeba RSL) are going to be brave and shave their heads on October 14, in a bid to raise money for cancer research.
By Justin Fris TWO Mareeba locals are going to be brave and shave their heads in a bid to raise money for cancer research. Tracey O’Shea and Fiona Parker – who are committed to several community causes – both have several reasons behind the challenge. “A friend of mine – whose husband is on our club committee (RSL) – she was diagnosed with cancer three weeks ago,” Tracey said. “It was a major shock, because they had no breast cancer in the family whatsoever. It was just a routine check. “The next morning after we got after the devastation, and we said: ‘Right, let’s do it’. Fiona put her hand up first and I said: ‘Well, if you’re going, I’m going’.” Both ladies are not only passionate about raising funds, but also spreading awareness regarding cancer. They urge residents to be diligent and get regular checks.
There will be several opportunities throughout the year (including a charity golf day, October 9) for people to assist the ladies on their challenge, culminating with the ‘Ladies Night Out’ event on Friday, October 14 at the Mareeba RSL, when the shave will take place. “It’s (‘Ladies Night Out’) is growing bigger and bigger each year,” Tracey said. “We’re both aiming for a combined total effort of $2000 each.” “It’s a full shave bald – not trimmed,” Fiona added. “It’s skin and I want the polish.” The duo have been in contact with Cancer Council Qld and the Mareeba RSL, with both entities supportive of their efforts. A Facebook page will be established in coming months, where locals will be able to keep up to date with Tracey and Fiona’s progress. In the meantime, if you would like to donate towards the challenge (even if you aren’t female), all you need to do is visit the Mareeba RSL and speak with Tracey and the team.

Another Big Fat Greek Wedding hits the big screen The follow up to the biggest rom-com in cinema history comes to the Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema this week. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 – brings back all the laughable and likeable characters of the original in one totally enjoyable, uplifting and entertaining film feast.
Also on screen is the excellent Disney family film THE JUNGLE BOOK. Plus there is one last chance to see BATMAN V SUPERMAN and KUNG FU PANDA 3, today Wednesday April 13. There's also a special matinee screening of ZOOTOPIA – the excellent Disney animation – this Saturday.
MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2
After spending most of their time focusing on their troubling teenage daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris), Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian (John Corbett) are facing marital problems while also having to deal with yet another Greek wedding this time, even bigger and fatter. Review by Louise Keller: There is such genuine affection for the characters in this uplifting sequel that we cannot help but be carried along by the craziness, energy and uproarious passion for all things Greek. It's hard to believe that it has been 14 years since Nia Vardalos' travel agent Toula fell for Ian (John Corbett), whose only crime was not to be Greek. Although time has passed and things have somewhat changed, in fact nothing has really changed with the large extended meddlesome family as meddlesome as ever - albeit in a hilariously caring way. Vardalos' smart screenplay concentrates on the little things - the characters, their foibles and misadventures. It's beautifully judged with immaculate timing and while there are no major surprises, the joys of the film are in the execution, offering a Parthenon of laughs and an adrenalin shot in the arm. The film begins by re-establishing the characters - from Vardalos' over caring mum Toula, her larger than life mother Maria (Laine Kazan), her cantankerous patriarch father. Gus (Michael Constantine), scene stealing Aunt

Voula (Andrea Martin), brash hairdresser sister Nikki (Gia Carides) to name but a few. The joke about this close-knit Greek family is that they live in each other's pockets - from four adjacent houses - so everyone knows everyone's affairs. The family's Greek restaurant is the natural central location for much of the action. The central plot of Toula and Ian's molly-coddled 17 year old Goth daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris) and the entire family's obsession with her meeting 'a nice Greek boy' is sidelined by the revelation that Maria and Gus's wedding 50 years ago is not legal. This joke is played to the hilt as Maria turfs Gus out of the marital bed, insists on 50 years backpay before insisting on the dream wedding she never had. Meanwhile, Toula and Ian are reigniting their romantic relationship with date nights and Gus is researching his ancestry. I love the scene when different family members patiently try
to teach Gus how to work the computer and the running gag is that each member of the Greek family - young and old insists every word in the English language originated with the Greek. It's loud and brash, silly and funny with a huge heart that pumps sincerity throughout the proceedings. Director Kirk Jones manages the mix of caricature and heartfelt sincerity wonderfully and the result is a fun 89 minutes that lets you leave your troubles at the door and have a whopping good time.

¾ cup shallots, cut finely Olive oil for brushing the dough ¼ cup cornmeal
Method 1. Fill a medium sized bowl with the water and sprinkle the yeast on top of it. Whisk the yeast until it’s dissolved. Add 3 cups of the flour and stir with a heavy spatula or wooden spoon until smooth. 2. Add the salt and then the remaining flour. Stir again until well combined. Dust a clean work surface with some flour and dump out the dough. Knead the dough dusting with more flour if things get sticky. 3. Once the dough is a round ball, place the dough back into the bowl. Cover the dough and let rise in a warm area for 2-3 hours or until doubled in size. Once the dough is ready, preheat your oven to 200 degrees or as hot as it can go if not that high. Place a pizza stone or a large upturned baking tray on the top shelf of the oven as it heats up. Dust it with a little of the corneal. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and punch the air out of it. Cut the dough into 4 pieces. 4. Using your finger tips press each piece of dough into an oval shape. Brush the dough with some olive oil and rub some minced garlic over the surface. 5. Sprinkle with the green onion and transfer to the pizza stone or baking tray. Bake in the oven for about 8-10 minutes, longer if you like it more crusty.

Notification of Proposed nbn™ Radio Network Base Station Facility The National Broadband Network (nbn) is a high speed broadband network designed to reach 100 per cent of national premises and provide the communications infrastructure to prevent Australians from falling behind in an increasingly online world. nbn is committed to delivering leading edge broadband services to all Australians by leveraging the three available types of technology – fixed line, fixed wireless and satellite, depending on location. As part of the fixed radio (wireless) component of the Network, nbn is proposing to undertake a radio network base station co-location on an existing 40m lattice tower at 137 Mason Street, Mareeba QLD 4880 (Lot 19 on M 356128) to provide high quality wireless broadband services to customers in the surrounding locality. Proposed works at the existing facility will involve the installation of four (4) new panel antennas (each less than 2.8m in length) at an approximate elevation of 40m. This will also involve the installation of ancillary equipment, including: seven (7) Remote Radio Units (RRUs) – two each behind three of the installed antennas, and one located behind the fourth antenna – two (2) nbn canisters mounted at an approx. elevation of 38m, and associated feeder cables. One (1) additional nbn outdoor equipment shelter (total base area less than 7.5m2) will be installed within the existing nbn lease area, situated at the base of the facility. nbn regards the proposed installation as a Lowimpact Facility under the Telecommunications (Lowimpact Facilities) Determination 1997. As such, it does not require planning approval from Mareeba Shire Council. Heat complete ‘smash and grab’ win over City By Justin Fris
THE FNQ Heat continued their impressive unbeaten National Premier League run in 2016, after a 1-0 smash and grab win over Brisbane City last weekend. Livewire Ari Isman’s 39th minute finish proved to be decisive for the visitors, who will now embark on the most challenging component of their season. Tim Campbell’s men started the match brightly and had solid claims for penalty only five minutes in. These were waved away promptly, but this failed to subdue their eagerness for the contest. Exciting English import Kieran Sanders roamed around the pitch with ease – regularly getting into good positions and testing the City defence’s resolve. The hosts would eventually find their feet and began to test the visitors’ application. Heat shot stopper Kevin Ward (pictured) would be up to all of these challenges, and produced a number of solid saves. The Heat has been working hard on set pieces in training over the past month, and their work paid off in the 39th minute. Jamie Gosling whipped in a deadly free-kick, which was handsomely pounced on by Isman who made no mistake from close range. City would huff and puff in the latter stages in a bid to find an equaliser, however the Heat managed to restrict them. Mareeba’s own Jamie Carroll would stun the crowd only a few minutes from full time, as his 50m free kick would clatter the crossbar and bounce off the roof of the net.
Campbell said he was pleased that his men recorded another fine victory away from home, but was acutely aware of the upcoming month of fixtures. “Our lads absolutely ran their hearts out tonight,” he said. “It was a bit of a smash and grab performance to be fair; but in many ways, that’s how we play away from home. “Over the 90 minutes, City probably created two or three half chances, whereas we created three or four good chances. “We missed a couple of 1v1’s going in on goal, which we probably should have taken.” After the match had concluded, the Heat players sat down in the middle of the pitch and took in the atmosphere with their coach. “We had a bit of a chat after the match on the field,” Campbell said. “I wanted the lads to just take in the atmosphere, as quite a large crowd travelled down to support us. “I also pointed to the scoreboard and said: ‘See that zero lads? If you can hold sides like that away from home, you’ll put yourselves in the mix’.” Campbell added: “Kevin Ward (goalkeeper) really played well for us tonight. His confidence is growing and I’m so glad he is repaying the faith.” The next six weeks will prove critical for the Heat’s finals ambitions. After playing Brisbane Roar Youth this Saturday, they face Edge Hill (FFA Cup), Redlands (away), Brisbane Strikers (home) and Moreton Bay (home) in quick succession. “This is the most crucial part of our season,” Campbell said.
Rangers striker Alex Reith takes on the MUFC defence.
Rangers run riot at Borzi Park By Justin Fris
THE Marlin Coast Rangers were simply breathless at times during their 4-2 win over the Mareeba United Football Club last Saturday evening at Borzi Park. After beginning their FNQ Premier League campaign with a 3-1 loss to Edge Hill, the visitors were hungry, speedy and made the game their own from the opening kickoff. Alex Srhoj’s men were far from disgraced on the evening and did display long segments of endeavour, however they were simply beaten by top draw finishing from the visitors. The Rangers made their intentions clear during the initial exchanges and took the lead in the 5th minute with their first shot on goal.
After winning the ball along the Srhoj Family Stand wing, David Di Lucchio scooted briskly through the defence and fired a crisp low drive from 25 yards past Dima Sinelik in the MUFC goal. The effort was as good a goal as you are ever likely to see in football – and only three minutes later, the visitors were at it again. This time it was Rangers captain Colin Parnell, who unleashed a piercing volley from 20 yards out on the MUFC clubhouse side of the ground. Parnell’s ferocity in the shot left many in the stands stunned, as it dipped over Sinelik and rifled the top right hand corner of the net. The hosts would then shrug off the cobwebs and force the Rangers’ hand for the next
hour – where they would be back on level terms through Alex Plowman and a Paul Ruiz spotkick. Desperately trying to find a winner, the Bulls were unable to land the telling blow, with several chances falling agonisingly short. Exciting FNQ Heat U/20’s talent Paris Arens-Strelnikof would eventually settle the difference in the 73rd minute for the visitors, taking on three defenders and dishing out a telling strike into the roof of the net. Post match, Srhoj said the current start to the season was a learning curve for both coaches and squad. He is confident they will continue to work hard and improve.
Roosters begin 2-0 under Howard By Justin Fris
INSPIRED by scintillating winger Jimmy Nawaibalavu (pictured) the Atherton Roosters maintained their unbeaten start to the 2016 Cairns District Rugby League season last Saturday night. Dean Howard has got the tricolours firing, and they duly delivered across the board in their 40-20 win over a plucky Kangaroos side. Things were tight early on, with both sides wrestling for supremacy. However, as the match turned for home, it was all Roosters as they put their foot on the gas pedal. Nawaibalavu was awarded ‘Man of
the Match’ for the second week in a row, but he had plenty of mates. The home side ran in eight tries on the night, with Nawaibalavu joined on the scoresheet by Jacob Rivett, Chris Campbell, Ben Waldock, Jack Willis, Jake Dawe, Ned Blackman and Saul Lealaitafea. Mossman/Port Douglas will be the next challenge for Howard’s men, who will be at home this Saturday evening from 7pm. Local entertainer ‘Cow’ Wilson will return for an extended set of live music during the game - with his music a hit with the many fans who regularly attend matches at Roosters Stadium.

Fun for all at inclusive Aquathlon LITTLE Liam Chapman (pictured) was one of 50 participants in Sunday’s Mareeba Rotary all inclusive ‘Aquathlon’, held at the Mareeba Swimming Pool and Lakes area. After waiting patiently for all the categories to finish, Liam finally got his turn to compete and did so with the biggest smile during his 25m swim and 200m run. Almost 100 people turned out to the fun family morning event – to either participate or support. Participants aged from 4 years right to 60 years and all competed in different distance
categories. Overcast conditions made for perfect swimming and running weather. While the morning was all about fun, it was also for a great cause with proceeds raised being donated to the FNQ Cerebral Palsy Support Group to support local children and their families. Organisers Dr Matt Jacob (Mareeba Rotary) and Shannon Telley (FNQ Cerebral Palsy Support Group) were rapt with the turnout and are looking forward to a bigger and better event in 2017.

Gladiators mauled by Tigers in Tully By Justin Fris
IT was a tough day all round for the Mareeba Gladiators faithful, who didn’t have a fruitful trip to Tully last weekend. After a exciting start to the season
with an impressive 44-22 A-Grade win over Edmonton, the Gladiators were brought back to earth by the Tully Tigers, who ran out convincing 45-16 winners on Saturday night. Reserve Grade and the U/18’s didn’t fare any better, with Tully
running out 40-0 and 38-0 winners respectively. But with Josh Stowers’ calming influence, there is no reason why the Gladiators can’t rebound quickly this Saturday night against Ivanhoes at Davies Park.
Unlike other forms of sport that are centered on team performance, Rhee Tae Kwon Do focuses on the individual and achieving the best for the student themselves. As Rhee Tae Kwon Do caters to all ages and fitness levels, it is a great family activity which all members of the family can enjoy together. All Tableland centres are taking new enrolments now.
