That’s Egg-tastic!

That’s Egg-tastic! SUNSHINE, chocolate and loads of fun will be in store for hundreds of Far North children as Kuranda’s annual Easter in the Park event makes its return this Saturday. A whopping 14,000 Easter eggs will rain down on Centenary Park when the Easter Bunny himself makes several “egg drops”, delighting youngsters such as this group pictured last year. Locals are being urged to get a hop along to several events running throughout the day. FULL STORY – PAGE 4

Just get rid of them By Michael Serenc KATTER’S Australian Party’s (KAP’s) controversial plan to cull problem saltwater crocodiles has found support from a pair of Biboohra farmers dealing with the animals on their properties. In an area normally free of saltwater crocodiles, Evan McGrath and Andrew Mazgay both told The Express they had no trouble backing the cull proposal as sightings continued to become more frequent. “We’re in a totally different position from all the other areas that have had problem crocodiles given the fact they’ve never been here,” Mr McGrath said.

“We always hear from the do-gooders that we encroach on their territory. These things are encroaching on our territory.” Mr McGrath said he did not care whether the crocodiles were removed or culled, he simply wanted them gone from the area. “They’ve got to go. It’s as simple as that,” he said. Mr Mazgay said something needed to be done about the crocodiles. “There’s one too many now here,” he said. “I saw another croc about three weeks ago near my pump station.” As revealed by The Express on March 22, Mr McGrath and Mr Mazgay were part of a group of local farmers who spoke out about

the growing numbers of crocodiles found on their properties, fearing someone would soon be killed unless action was taken by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection . Mr Mazgay, who runs a sand quarry and farms cane, previously told the paper he had been lunged at by a saltwater crocodile three times in the last three years, including one incident at Two Mile Creek last month. Wildlife officers had set up cameras and croc baits at a waterway on his property on March 2 and have since been back to collect the cameras’ memory cards and review any evidence of sightings. QITE make historic move MAREEBA’S old fire station is set to undergo a major renovation after being bought by a local job agency. QITE forked out just over half a million dollars for the building in an auction late last month, which will give their head office a more central and visible location along Byrnes St. QITE chairman Peter Apel said he was thrilled with the building, which offered QITE’s 22 Mareeba-based staff more office space and secure parking. “It’s a good profile in town and good accessibility for a lot of people who don’t have their own transport,” he said. “It will allow us to better organise what we are doing and make better use of the space, as well as provide improved training and customer support services.”

QITE chairman Peter Apel and general manager Jillian Trout out the front of Mareeba’s old fire station, which has just been purchased by the job agency.

Mr Apel said the new building also gave QITE scope for future expansion. QITE general manager Jillian Trout said the business now had its very own asset as opposed to its currently leased premises at 39 Byrnes St. “It’s really about improving the asset and putting an investment into the community,” she said. “There’s 75 staff across the region that we employ but Mareeba is considered our head office and this is where a lot of our back-of-house duties operate, such as finance and quality assurance.” Ms Trout said the increased visibility of QITE’s new

building would also make the agency more accessible for local employers interested in listing job vacancies. “It’s that front of mind thing,” Mr Apel added. “If they’re walking past us every day, we might be the first name they think of if they’re wanting to hire someone.” Mr Apel said QITE would begin moving in to their new building within 12 months. The agency currently has a “jobactive” contract with the Federal Government and offers labour hire and harvest labour hire services. Several training organisations also use QITE’s office space for their own programs, including TAFE training.

MAREEBA was a little safer last Friday night when Supergirl flew in to the local RSL. The club’s monthly “First Friday” event took a superpowered turn, vowing to smash down drink prices during “happy hour” between 9pm and 11pm. Farmers in plea to remove crocs FROM Page 1

Biboohra farmers Evan McGrath, Andrew Mazgay and Heath Amos are concerned about the growing number of saltwater crocodiles inhabiting their properties.

The farmers’ properties are infested with thick hymenachne weeds, creating a perfect environment for crocs to hide in and making it difficult for rangers to conduct patrols in those waterways. A sign has also been erected at a causeway along Pickford Rd next to Two Mile Creek, warning visitors and bird watchers that there are crocodiles in the area. But Mr McGrath said the sign was relatively small and would likely go unnoticed by passers-by. “It’s insignificant,” he said. Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth said he was in the process of drafting legislation for a controlled croc cull, shooting safaris and legalising egg collection with fellow KAP MP Robbie Katter. Mr Knuth said saltwater crocodiles inhabiting Biboohra was concerning. “This goes to show the scale of the problem we have, that in inland areas where you would have never seen a saltwater croc before, they are now showing up,” he said. Mr Knuth and Mr Katter will be touring north Queensland in the week

following Easter to speak with those affected by crocodiles in their area. “We want to ensure we can bring back the balance and where crocs are a problem, people’s safety would be the priority,” he said. “We are not mucking around about this. The main objective is there would be no negotiation with culling.” But Mr Knuth said depending on the situation, removing crocodiles could still be an option under the proposed legislation despite a preference to cull. The legislation is expected to be introduced into parliament in May. The push for a croc cull comes after a spear fisherman was killed by a crocodile at Palmer Point north of Innisfail last month and a pet dog was taken by a croc in the same region on the weekend of April 1. “When you’ve got crocs that are protected by the State Government, there’s no doubt crocs are becoming bold, increasing in numbers and stalking and killing both people and their pets,” Mr Knuth said. “The parliament needs to make a decision whether they’re going to back the people or back the crocs.”

Labor backs health review of overseas-trained GPs FEDERAL Labor has backed a government review into the possibility of allowing overseastrained GPs who bulk bill to set up in Mareeba. Shadow Rural Health spokesman Tony Zappia welcomed Health Minister Greg Hunt’s recent decision to review Mareeba’s eligibility to be classed as a District of Workforce Shortage (DWS). A DWS enables overseas trained doctors to practice in the area and gain access to Medicare benefits which enables bulk billing. “I wait with interest to see what the outcome of Mr Hunt’s review will be,” Mr Zappia said. “The Mareeba issue highlights a more seri-

ous and broader problem of getting health professionals to work in country Australia and in turn the impact that has on the local community when there is a shortage.” While stopping short of saying Mareeba needed to be classified as a DWS, Mr Zappia said Labor wanted to ensure there was a system to recruit doctors to work “in all parts of Australia” to meet community needs. “I would imagine the minister will look at all the relevant factors relating to the needs of Mareeba and it’ll be useful to know what the outcome is and whether changes need to made,” he said.

“It’s difficult to make a judgement as to whether the health system itself is at fault or there are other factors.” Mr Zappia said he also supported the introduction of after-hours home bulk-billing service Dial-a-Doctor into Mareeba and Atherton from next month, which will further bolster healthcare options in the region. Meanwhile, the Federal Government’s Health Insurance Amendment (National Rural Health Commissioner) Bill, which achieved bipartisan support in the House of Representatives is yet to be debated in the Senate. But Mr Zappia said he was confident it would

pass, with Labor adding three additional amendments to the Bill, which would spend $4.4 million to establish a Commissioner tasked with overseeing reforms. Those amendments were reviewing whether the Commissioner should continue in their role past July 1, 2020 when the office would cease to exist, the Commissioner having access to advice from the Health Ministers’ Advisory Council’s Rural Health Standing Committee and broadening the Commissioner’s scope of work beyond developing a National Rural Generalist Pathway without the need for ministerial approval.

Digging deep for cancer cause A WHOPPING $500,000 has been donated to the construction of a planned cancer wellbeing centre in Cairns – with the help of local Freemasons. Mareeba’s Granite Masonic Lodge was one of several Freemasons groups across the Tablelands and Queensland who helped contribute to the organisation’s charity, “Hand Heart Pocket”. With each group’s levy and the sale of some retirement villages previously owned by the United Grand Lodge of Queensland, Hand Heart Pocket was able to donate to the Committee for Oncology Unit at Cairns Hospital (COUCH) for their planned Wellbeing Centre situated among natural

rainforest along Reservoir Rd. The centre will deliver services that provide a holistic approach to cancer care with the primary goal of improving the quality of life for people living with cancer as well as their carers. It will be used by patients across the Cairns region, including Mareeba and the Tablelands, with the centre’s 2.1ha of land donated by the wellknown Woodward family. The $500,000 will specifically go towards the construction of a large double pavilion, the first of the pavilions to be built on the Manoora site, which will house specialist and support service

providers. Mareeba’s Granite Masonic Lodge treasurer John Collins was full of praise for Hand Heart Pocket’s donation to COUCH. “I think it’s wonderful they’ve supported that,” he said. “There’s a lot of Masonic Lodges in Cairns and three up on the Tablelands, so we’ve all contributed.” Mr Collins said Hand Heart Pocket had matched a $500 donation the Lodge made to Mareeba Meals on Wheels last year. Hand Heart Pocket CEO Gary Mark said that

the decision to support centre was made in consultation with the Freemasons in the District, who helped to identify a deserving cause that the charity could support and would benefit the people of Far North Queensland. “This centre will be the first of its kind in Cairns and will without a doubt be an asset to the region. Hand Heart Pocket is proud to support this regional initiative that will help to empower people living with cancer and their families, improving their quality of life,” he said.

Baiada, union get breakthrough THE Australasian Meat Industry Employees’ Union (AMIEU) has praised moves by the company in charge of a Mareeba chicken factory to cease using foreign labour. It follows a meeting between AMIEU officials and senior management of Baiada Poultry in Brisbane last Thursday, where concerns were aired about the company employing workers on 417 and 457 visas. After a union meeting at Mareeba Turf Club on March 27, Baiada vowed they would no longer be using foreign labour at their Mareeba factory and confirmed this to AMIEU Queensland branch secretary Matthew Journeaux last week. “We’re satisfied with the outcome,” he said. “I think this situation highlighted it was an emotive issue within the local area and to give credit where credit’s due, Baiada’s taken that on board and are prepared to put on local workers.” Mr Journeaux said it was “hugely important” local people were given priority for jobs at the factory.

“Mareeba’s not an area with a lot of industry or opportunity, so those local workers rely on the jobs that are available,” he said. “I’d say Baiada would be one of the largest employers within that district.” But Mr Journeaux said the union would be keeping tabs on Baiada to ensure they didn’t revert back to their old practices. “We’ve given Baiada a significant number of applications from locals who have come to us and we’ve directed them to the Baiada plant as well where they can fill out applications.” The Express understands Baiada has already employed six people who filled out application forms at March 27’s union meeting in Mareeba, which took more than 80 job applications from locals. The company operates eight processing plants across the country, including their Mareeba facility, and supplies chicken products to a range of supermarkets, fast food outlets and their own subsidiary brands, Steggles and Lilydale Free Range Chicken.

New bike track for Millaa Millaa A NEW bike track at Millaa Millaa has added to the growing number of outdoor facilities on the Tablelands. The town’s Bicycle Pump Track and Skills Park was opened on March 25 by Tablelands mayor Joe Paronella after an extensive community lobbying effort. “Up to 100 people enjoyed riding displays from members of our local cycling groups, trying out the new infrastructure and a fantastic barbeque provided by the Millaa Millaa Lions Club,” said Cr Paronella. “This is a great outcome for the Millaa Millaa community and a great example of a successful partnership between Council and community.” The facility, located at the Millaa Millaa Lions Park, is a dedicated skills park which features rocks, trees and other obstacles such as beams, bumps and jumps that teach critical skills in bicycle riding ability. It was funded by council and constructed by Ground Creations with assistance provided by the Millaa Millaa Lions Club. Colourful mural celebrates youth A CREATIVE mural celebrating National Youth Week has been put on display at Wondecla Sports Grounds. More than 30 Herberton youngsters converged on the grounds on April 1 to help paint the mural on the changing room wall, which features a magpie wearing the Herberton and District Rugby League Club jersey as well as images depicting the identity and culture of the historic mining town. Tablelands Regional Council partnered with the Police Citizens Youth Club, Herberton and Districts Junior Rugby League, Mount Saint Bernard’s College, Herberton State School and the National Rugby League to provide a day of fun and games, including the eye-catching mural with the help of artist Daniel ‘Wally’ Wallwork. “The Be Bold, Be Brave, Be You theme is a powerful message for the community,” said Division 1 Councillor Kate Eden. “It is very appropriate as the youth of our region need to be given the opportunity to express their thoughts on their issues and priorities. This message serves as a reminder to many that the youth of our community are the next generation of leaders.” Council Community Programs officer Jason Turcinovic said he was impressed with the participation and enthusiasm of participants. “The event has been awesome. Quad accident sparks call for action A KURANDA man has urged authorities to take action against people illegally crossing train tracks in their cars and motorbikes after an accident earlier this month. McCorry Rd resident Shea McKay said he was fed up with motorists and motorbike riders illegally crossing the train tracks to get to swimming holes in the area. It comes after a 21-year-old Machans Beach man collided with a passenger train while riding his quad bike along the Kuranda-Mareeba railway line near Fairyland Railway Station on April 1. While no-one was injured, the 40-year-old train driver was forced to SAFETY FIRST: Quadsafe Australia directors Colin Lawson (right), pictured with Darrell apply emergency brakes before colliding Knight, believes the government needs to register quad bikes like the one involved in this with the quad bike, causing significant crash along a railway line at Kuranda (inset). damage to the bike and train. MAREEBA Shire Council has blitzed the State in financial management after winning a major local government award last week. Council received the “Financial Sustainability Award” at the Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA)Queensland Awards for Excellence in Brisbane last Thursday night, delighting CEO Peter Franks. “It’s really nice to be recognised by the LGMA for the work that council’s done,” he said. “The big thing is it’s a total team effort, so all staff and councillors over last three years have really pulled together to achieve this.” Mr Franks said the award flew in the face of Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC) predictions which said council would fall into financial trouble within five years after it broke away from Tablelands Regional Council in January 2014. “We’ve had to be really careful about every cent we spend,” he said. “Interestingly, the QTC actually used Mareeba Shire Council as an example of how a council could manage their finances sustainably after de-amalgamation at the

Local Government Financial Sustainability Summit last month.” Mr Franks said council was forced to make several “hard decisions” early on in the de-amalgamation process, including making some staff redundant, offering voluntary redundancies and through natural attrition. “Basically, we looked at every single dollar we spent and looked at where we could try and make savings,” he said. “Our major source of revenue is ratepayer’s dollars and we can’t simply keep on putting up rates. We’ve got to look at ways of trying to minimise the impact on the community and still deliver a good quality service.” Mr Franks said council was still working through the budget for next financial year. “We’re going to do what we can to minimise any rate increase,” he said. From an operating budget of $37.9 million, council is expected to reap a $4.5 million surplus by the end of the 2016/17 financial year while maintaining a 3.5 per cent rate rise across the board.

101-year-old dies in three-vehicle crash A 101-year-old woman is dead after a nightmare three-vehicle crash near Koah last Friday. The woman, a passenger in a Mitsubishi Lancer sedan, collided with a Holden Commodore about 11:15am after it had stopped along the Kennedy Highway and was waiting to turn right into O’Neil Cl. The impact caused the Commodore to be pushed into the path of a Toyota Hilux travelling in the opposite direction. As a result of the initial impact, the Lancer’s elderly passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Occupants of the other vehicles were treated for serious injuries at the scene and taken to Cairns Hospital. That included three women,

a man, a young boy and one female toddler. The accident held up traffic for several hours along the highway, with the road finally re-opened that afternoon. The fatality comes after vehicle roll overs last Tuesday had police pleading with motorists to play it safe over the Easter break. An 18-year-old Mt Molloy woman was lucky to escape with only minor cuts after she swerved to miss a kangaroo and rolled her vehicle at about 8am on Fichera Rd, Mareeba. A few hours later, another crash at Speewah happened at about 12:30pm along the Kennedy Highway, this time involving two vehicles. A 53-year-old Edmonton man was trapped in his vehicle when it

was struck by another vehicle and rolled down an embankment. He was transported to hospital for observation. But it got worse after a third crash happened on the Kennedy Highway at Mareeba about 3.30pm when a 22-year-old Mareeba man lost control of his vehicle causing it to roll. He was also transported to hospital for observation Traffic was temporarily held up on the range last Thursday afternoon after an accident involving a horse trailer. Police urged all motorists to pay attention to the “Fatal Five” – distraction and inattention, speeding, drink and drug driving, failure to wear a seatbelt and driving while fatigued.

Atherton Rotary Club president Andrew McCosh, Rotary FNQ Field Days Committee chair Pauline Spackman, Rotary District Governor Ida Portella and Mareeba Rotary Club president Stephen Gear at Kerribee Park.

Field Days giving back community THE communities of Mareeba and Atherton look set to benefit again from this year’s Rotary’s FNQ Field Days after a string of projects funded through previous events. Mareeba Rotary Club president Stephen Gear and Atherton Rotary Club present Andrew McCosh are full of praise for Field Days and how the money raised helps them fund important community projects. Mr Gear said money raised from previous Field Days had enabled his club to fund the installation of TVs in patient wards at Mareeba Hospital and a playground for the facility. “A lot of our money goes back to the Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation,” he said. “We also reinvest money by supporting local community groups and other small Rotary projects like the National Youth Science Forum and the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness

program.” Mr Gear said Field Days was his club’s major biennial fundraiser to be able to continue supporting community groups. “It’s also critical for other notfor-profit groups that provide food on Field Days, like the scouts and soccer club,” he said. “We give out free sites as well for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), the Black Dog Institute and Queensland Country Women’s Association.” Mr McCosh said money raised from previous Field Days had enabled his club to help fund the Rocky Creek Igloo restoration project and a multi-purpose facility at Atherton Aerodrome for use by the RFDS, paramedics and aero club members. The club also donated molasses and hay to bushfire victims in the Gulf back in late 2012 and held a “BLAZE AID” charity ball the fol-

lowing year to raise money for those graziers doing it tough. Rotary District 9550 Governor Ida Portella said the fact Field Days was being held over three days this year presented an excellent opportunity for both clubs to raise even more money for their worthy causes. “I’m sure they’ll spend their money wisely and give back to the community through projects that do some good,” she said. “I think both clubs work really well together and the fact they partner to put on the event is terrific.” About 18,000 people passed through the gates at Rotary FNQ Field Days in 2015, with all indications pointing to a repeat of that number this year. A biennial event, Rotary FNQ Field Days will be held between Wednesday May 24 and Friday May 26, 2017 at Mareeba’s Kerribee Park.

A PAIR of a capella singers are set to have locals dancing the night away later this month when Africa Entsha plays at Kuranda Amphitheatre. Mpumi Mpunzi and David Nhlapo, part of the five-strong group touring Australia, will sing a wide variety of entertaining songs infused with dance, movement and percussion in a Gospel style. The duo will also sing some songs in their native Zulu tongue, paying homage to their roots in Soweto, South Africa. Africa Entsha manager Mario Nqabeni said the audience could expect a lively performance on the night.

“The audience is usually really responsive. The best part of the performance is when we get the audience to sing along with us,” he said. “There’s a choreography that we do that involves the audience so we do it all together.” Mr Nqabeni said Africa Entsha’s style would bring something unique to Kuranda. “Our style is something new. Wherever we’ve gone in Australia, a lot of people say they have not seen it,” he said. “We’ve been really enjoying it. What we’re hoping for is people learn more about the different elements of a capella

music, the style of clap and tap and the infusion of Western music being done in a different format.” The group has been performing for the past eight years and have previously toured the United Kingdom. Mr Nqabeni said the group got their start in gospel choir music in South Africa. Africa Entsha will play at Kuranda Amphitheatre on April 29 from 8pm. To purchase tickets, head to www. eventbrite.com and search for “Africa Entsha”. Tickets are $30 online or $35 at the door.

Shooters school pollies, media MAREEBA Rifle Club threw open its doors to politicians and the media last Saturday in bid to promote proper education on firearms last Saturday. Organised by the Shooters Union of Australia (SUA) in conjunction with the Shooting Industry Foundation of Australia, about half a dozen Far North councillors and media members attended the day to pop off a round or two. SUA vice-president David Brown said he was delighted by the turnout, which involved participants using lightweight hunting rifles equipped with telescopic sights trying to hit a paper bullseye at the shooting range. “You couldn’t wipe the smile off their faces, it was an absolute delight,” he said. “The educational transfer was brilliant. The purpose of what we were doing was basically just to get rid of the myths and misinformation surrounding firearms. “It was about showing, contrary to widespread belief, why shooting is one of the safest sports around - shooters

take safety very seriously and are meticulous about following safety procedures.” Mareeba mayor Tom Gilmore and councillors Kevin Davies and Lenore Wyatt attended the day, as did two Cairns councillors. Cook MP Billy Gordon also made an appearance, donating $500 to the Mareeba Rifle Club. “Clubs like this operate on the smell of an oily rag and are a strong symbol of the community’s way of life here in north Queensland, which must be protected,” he said. Mr Brown, who has been running the open days in regional centres between Cairns and the Gold Coast, said Mareeba Rifle Club was a “cut above” when it came to organisation and professionalism. “I can’t speak highly enough about how wonderful the experience was. It was one of the best we’ve had,” he said.

School teacher kicks goal A 51-YEAR-OLD Atherton school teacher has become the latest Rhee Tae Kwon Do member to achieve his black belt, proving age is no barrier. Andrew Coghlan achieved his 1st Dan Black Belt at Rhee Tae Kwon Do’s “Action Day” on April 1 in Mareeba. 50 students and 10 Black Belt instructors from Atherton, Mareeba and Dimbulah Rhee Tae Kwon Do training centres attended the day. Australia and New Zealand Rhee Tae Kwon Do founder, World Master Chong Chul Rhee, was the chief grading examiner on the day, alongside 5th Dan Regional Master Instructor for Tablelands, Gennaro Arena. Rhee Tae Kwon Do Atherton Branch Instructor Larry Simpson said Coghlan’s success proved “age is no barrier if a student focuses and applies themselves 100 percent”. On the day, Coghlan demonstrated effective technique, power and control with his punch, sidekick and turning kick, breaking two timber boards. He also demonstrated his spin-

ning heel kick by breaking a single timber board, as well as executing his pattern and numerous rounds of free sparring with Black Belt instructors on the day. “Andrew’s focus and determination was exemplary - he never once faltered and maintained self control, tenacity and humility for the duration of his grading test,” said Rhee Taw Kwon Do Tablelands secretary and 2nd Dan Black Belt instructor Gaye Taylor. “For myself and many others as practitioners of Rhee Tae Kwon Do, it’s much more than a health and fitness activity. It’s a way of life.” The martial art is one of the biggest in Australia. The next Action Day will be held on June 24 in Mareeba. For more information, contact Gennaro Arena on 4093 2593.

Bulls pumped for Heat clash SUPER STOPPER: Josh Leporati has been selected for the Australian squad to compete in this July’s U14 Mini Futsal World Cup in Brazil.

Young goalie chases Aussie dream A MAREEBA teen is calling on the community to help him realise his World Cup dream. Josh Leporati, 13, has been selected to represent Australia as a goalkeeper in the U14 Mini Futsal World Cup in Brazil later this year. He just needs $6500 to get there. The son of Mareeba Bulls veteran keeper Ronnie Leporati, Josh said he would love nothing more than to represent the green and gold. “It would be a great experience playing for Australia,” he said. “I like the pace of futsal. It’s faster than soccer.” Another two local futsal players – Damian Avolio and Dean Alterio were also selected as part of the 12-strong squad for the World Cup but cannot attend. Josh has previously been selected to play for Australia on tour before but has been unable to attend due to the cost. The Mareeba State High student, who plays futsal in Cairns once a week, has

excelled at the national level and hopes to one day get a contract to play futsal fulltime overseas. Spain, Thailand and India are just some of the countries that offer professional leagues. “I’m hoping a scout may see me and I can pick up more skills at the World Cup,” Josh said. Ronnie, who is going to the World Cup as an assistant coach with the team, said he would love to see his son put on the gloves in Brazil. “If we can get some help and support from the local community, it would certainly be appreciated,” he said. “I think Josh has got a good future if he sticks at it and trains hard. One save can turn a game and he’s proven it in the past. “The sky’s the limit for him.” To sponsor Josh, call Ronnie Leporati on 0402 788 763. The World Cup kicks off on July 6.

THE stage is set for an explosive FFA Cup clash between the Mareeba Bulls and FNQ Heat tomorrow night after Borzi Park was chosen as host venue. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj said he was looking forward to the potential match-ups on the field, including former A-League midfielders Wayne Srhoj and Lorenzo Sipi. “It’s a good opportunity to test ourselves. The boys are pretty excited about it,” he said. “We will need to be at our best, but we have nothing to lose. They are the clear favourites.” Adding some extra spice, former Mareeba junior Josh Pin will line up for the Heat while midfielder Bronson Koppen will also face off against his former club who he played for in the old Queensland State League under the FNQ Bulls. The Bulls themselves are not short of state-level experience thanks to strikers Steven Cater, Paul Ruiz and David Ruiz.

“We have to focus on ourselves and make sure we play a good game,” Srhoj said. “We won’t worry about them too much…They are a good side with some good players, but so are we. “We definitely don’t fear them.” However, the Bulls will be sweating on the fitness of captain Alex Plowman while the Heat’s Jamie Carroll and Shaun Owens, both former Bulls, have been ruled out. Srhoj said he was hoping for a big and vocal crowd at the match. “We need the crowd, we need the noise. It’s more then just the boys on the park, it’s us against them,” he said. “Hopefully we can catch everyone before they go away for Easter. It’s the first time in about three years that we’ve been able to play at this level.” The game will kick off at 7:30pm.

Second div smash Leichhardt

MAREEBA Bulls Orange have continued their undefeated streak in FNQ Football’s second division competition after smashing Leichhardt 4-0 last Friday night. After a ripper start to the season when they put 13 unanswered goals past Marlin Coast in round one, Orange continued their rampage against the Lions at Borzi Park. Orange’s Christian Mukadi drew first blood in the 15th minute to go 1-0 up, but the floodgates really opened in the second half. Damien Wildman (55th minute), Raphael Adjedj (75th minute) and Josh Ruiz (84th minute) all added to the pain for the Lions who simply had no answers. Orange coach Angelo Tatti was thrilled with his team’s performance. “I’m extremely pleased. I thought it would be a tough game, but the boys played really well across the whole 90 minutes,” he said. “As a coach, I couldn’t ask for any more. We’ve

played three games and had three wins so it’s a great start to the season. “The boys have been working really hard at training and they’re really disciplined on the field.” Despite going undefeated, Tatti said his side wasn’t getting ahead themselves and was taking it “one game at a time”. “I know we’re coming up to some tough games,” he said. “We’ve had the luxury of playing at home for the last three games and we’ll be playing away for the next two or three games, so that’s always a challenge.” Meanwhile, Mareeba Bulls Black enjoyed a similar 5-0 thumping of Edge Hill in the night’s other second division clash at Borzi Park. The Bulls’ premiers, ladies and reserve matches were cancelled and postponed to a later date.

Dimbulah man ‘stares death in the face’ A LOCAL “bull fighter” will be keeping watch over the cowboys who contest this July’s Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Australia competition in Cairns. Dimbulah man Kerry Whitehouse is the first Far North Queenslander to be offered the hazardous job, which involves protecting riders from serious injury or death – often putting his own life on the line. Whitehouse, who has been performing the role for PBR for the last 18 months, said he couldn’t wait to perform in front of a home crowd. “It’s going to be a rush and a very proud moment for me. The pinnacle of my career so far,” he said. “It’s a massive achievement to be noticed by the PBR and it makes you realise you must be doing your job right. I feel accomplished and honoured to be a part of it.” Known for his happy, easy-going nature, Whitehouse said he relished the “adrenaline rush” of being in the ring and knew the importance of his job. “I don’t think about what can happen if a bull gets me. I’m totally focused on making sure the riders get home safe to

their families,” he said. “My job is to put my body between them and the bull, and I do that with pride. I have the upmost respect for the blokes that compete in this dangerous sport and my number one objective is to protect them, no matter what. “We all have each other’s backs. We work in a tripod, and try not to get in each other’s way. We work like magnets, pulling together when needed.” An ex-bull rider himself, Whitehouse said he appreciated just how volatile the sport could be after several broken bones. That in turn makes him an ideal candidate as a bull fighter. “Your senses sharpen ten-fold. I watch everything, from what position the rider is in so you know if he’s about to come off, to how the bull is bucking,” he said. “You basically have to have eyes in the back of your head to keep a firm grip on the situation.” Whitehouse said he dreamt of making it over to the PBR World Finals in Las Vegas one day. To book tickets to this July’s PBR at the Cairns Convention Centre, head to www.ticketek.com.au or call 132 849.

MAREEBA Gladiators have demolished Mossman-Port Douglas in a comprehensive 46-16 victory at Davies Park last Saturday. Fresh off a 48-20 win against Cairns Kangaroos the week before, the Gators got off to a solid 22-12 start by half time. Far from being satisfied, a pep talk in the sheds from coach Tye Ingebrigtsen fired up his side as they piled on a further 24 points in a dominant second half performance. “I had a good chat to the boys about coming out in the second half and really firing,” Ingebrigtsen said. “We worked on a couple of things and spotted a few of their weaknesses in defence.” Gladiators co-captain Ian King was a particular standout, racking up the big metres to earn man-of-thematch. “It’s the best game he’s played this season,” Ingebrigtsen said. “I had been asking Kingy lately that I needed him to stand up as a captain and he finally delivered for me. “I was really impressed with

THE Atherton Roosters have registered their first win of the 2017 Cairns District Rugby League season with a come-frombehind 32-24 victory over Edmonton Storm at Roosters Stadium on Saturday night. After being down 20-12 at the break, the Roosters powered home to deliver four more tries in the second stanza for a win they were desperate to get. Roosters coach Dean Howard said his side were full of mistakes in the first half but a much improved second half got them home. “We forced errors on ourselves with silly penalties and dropped the ball in the first couple of tackles,” he said. “Our second half was very positive, we held the ball a lot better and the points came for us.” Fullback Jacob Rivett was again at his best with three tries, while young prop forward James Coyle continues to improve. The reserve grade match went to Storm 16-10 over the Roosters after the score was locked at 4-all by halftime. In the under 19 match, the Roosters defeated Storm 24-18 after leading 14-12 at the break. The Roosters will now host Southern Suburbs in all three grades at Roosters Stadium on April 22.

Kingy’s performance. He’s a player with a lot of potential.” Henare Maeva came off the bench to bolster King’s onslaught, while lock Clint Posselt was his usual consistent self. Winger Boche Satrick crossed the line twice in the second half and local youngster Jack Hogan scored a try in his A-grade debut. “It’s just been a great effort. We’ve now won four games out of five,” Ingebrigtsen said. “It’s a really strong position to be in. The club won three games last year in A-grade so we’ve already managed to do better than that in five games. “I’m really happy with the position we’re in.” The Gators now break over Easter before having a bye in round six and then returning the following week to play Tully on May 6. Co-captain Maddie Oosen copped a knock to the shoulder early on in the Mossman game, but Ingebrigtsen remained confident he would be right for round seven.
