Blast from the past

TABLELANDS residents were treated to a visual history lesson last weekend when hundreds turned out to see a plethora of wartime relics at the Mareeba Military Muster. Vehicles, weapons, equipment and uniforms were all on display at the Mareeba Turf Club, exciting youngsters like Kyden Musumeci, 11 (pictured). Held for the past eight years in Ravenshoe, the muster is showing no signs of slowing down as it continues to pay tribute to the region’s former servicemen and women. FULL STORY - PAGE 7

Smoking laws branded ‘ridiculous’ By Michael Serenc A TABLELANDS tobacco identity has slammed Queensland’s new suite of smoking laws, arguing the government would be better off banning cigarettes than continuing to penalise those who lit up. Former Dimbulah tobacco farmer Remzi Mulla failed to see the point of the new legislation introduced last Thursday, which bans smoking within five metres of bus stops, taxi ranks, skate parks, and a swathe of health and education facilities.

Smoking punters will also be pushed back 10 metres of playing and viewing areas during organised under-18 sporting events “Make it illegal to smoke and be done with it,” Mr Mulla said. “It’s ridiculous…I think they’re really going overboard.” Smoking within 10 metres of in-use campsites and any public facilities such as picnic tables, toilet blocks barbecues, visitor information centres, shelters, jetties and boat ramps will also be banned from February 1 next year. Mr Mulla, who was chairman of the former Tobacco Leaf Marketing Board, questioned why

the government had been so quick to crackdown on smoking when alcohol and illicit drugs posed an even greater risk to public health. “The biggest problem we have in this country at the moment, be it with car accidents or domestic violence, is drinking and drugs,” he said. “Politically, it’s better for the government to be seen rubbishing smokers than drinkers. “They’re penalising the wrong product.” Mr Mulla believed individuals should still have the right to make their own lifestyle choices. “There’s a lot of things that aren’t good for you but I think people need to make their own

choices,” he said. State Health Minister Cameron Dick defended the new laws. “We’ve gone from 30 per cent of adults smoking daily to 12 per cent in 15 years, and encouragingly, the number of teenagers smoking has dropped from 24 per cent to 6 per cent over the same period, so the message is getting through,” Mr Dick said. “While market research shows most smokers try and do the right thing when it comes to where they smoke, these new smoke-free areas will serve to firm-up protection for non-smokers.”

Sue’s service with a smile SUE Brady is a rare find in today’s world of ever-growing careers and declining job uncertainty. The Mareeba grandmother has celebrated 30 years of continuous service at Coles Mareeba and isn’t slowing down just yet. “I’m not the first one to mark 30 years here, I think there’s another seven before me and they’re still here, so it says what the store’s about,” she said. “It’s another family working at Coles.” Starting out as a 14-year-old at Coles’ original general store along Byrnes St back in 1973, Mrs Brady has seen a mountain of change in her time behind the counter. She admits it was a simpler time back then in Mareeba, one when literally everyone knew everyone. “All the products were laid out with the staff were behind the counters and the customers came in, got what they wanted, we’d bring it up and then they’d go,” she said. “Nowadays it’s all do your own shopping and go through the checkouts.” After moving with the store to Mareeba Plaza shopping centre in 1979, Mrs Brady left her job to have children in 1983, capping off a decade of service with Coles.

Coles Mareeba team member Sue Brady has celebrated 30 years of continuous service at the store.

But it wasn’t long before she was back in 1986, notching up another 30 years in several different roles includ-

ing variety manager, night fill manager, team member and acting duty manager. “There’s different things you can do

every day. It’s not just sitting in front of a computer or doing checkouts,” Mrs Brady said. The rest, they say, is history.

New speakers for Catholic Church The Committee of Our Lady of the Chain have donated new speakers to St Thomas’s Catholic Church Mareeba. Fr John Sullivan said that since he has been in Mareeba, there have been several times when the church has been packed, both inside and out, and he felt that the speakers were in need of upgrading. He approached the Committee of Our Lady of The Chain, who was only too happy to help out. The new speakers have been very well received. The Feast of Our Lady of the Chain will be held this Sunday. Mass will be celebrated by Bishop James Foley and Fr John Sullivan and will commence at 2.30pm followed by a procession of the Statue of Our Lady through the streets of Mareeba. Entertain-

ment will continue on the school oval, with a variety of hot food including homemade pasta and gnocchi and a delicious array of sweets. There is a licensed bar and also a Pesca to win some great prizes. The committee are excited to bring the Feast back to Mareeba. Entertainer Fortunato Isgro, who made his first appearance at the Feast in 2015 and was very well received. A very talented entertainer, Fortunato’s music covers English classics from the 1950’s to 1970’s, plus traditional Italian music. The evening ends with a fantastic fireworks display. The committee welcomes everyone to join them for the 2016 Feast of Our Lady of The Chain.

MSF Sugar will begin construction of an eco-friendly power station in Mareeba from next May, similar to this one in Thailand (pictured).

Power station key to green future AN eco-friendly power station is set to make the Tablelands a renewable energy powerhouse. MSF Sugar’s announcement last week of a $75 million power station fuelled by sugar cane fibre is the latest in a series of green projects planned for the region. The station will be built next to MSF’s existing sugar mill in Mareeba. MSF business development general manager Hywel Cook said together with the $360 million Mt Emerald Wind Farm, the region had bright prospects. “I can see a future where the whole region will be powered by green energy,” he said. “Whether it’s bio-mass from sugar cane, so-

lar or wind, I think we’ll be a net exporter of electricity from the region.” Adding to the power station and wind farm, construction has begun on a $42.5 million solar and storage facility at Lakeland. MSF’s power station is set to begin construction next May and will eventually generate 100,000 megawatt hours of electricity. The company claims that will be enough to power all homes on the Tablelands and hopes to have another three stations built at their South Johnstone, Mulgrave and Maryborough mills by 2021. 80 jobs will be created during the Mareeba power station’s construction phase, with most to be sourced from local labour.

Mr Cook said he wanted to investigate other uses for sugar and the excess cane fibre, known as bagasse. “I’m talking with people at Queensland University of Technology about what might be possible,” he said. “Sugar cane is a really big biomass crop and with the right technology, you can convert it into bio-plastics and different fuels like biodiesel or ethanol.” Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said the power station gave the region another “option for generating power” alongside wind, solar and hydro powered systems.

Backlash over rate rise AN Atherton ratepayer is fed up with increasing council rates after copping a rise of almost $400 in the past five years. Granville Spencer said the continuous rate rises by Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) were getting beyond a joke upon receiving his latest half yearly bill for $1570.20, including discount for early payment. That is $394.80 more than his bill five years ago for the half year ending on December 31, 2011, which was $1175.40 including discount for early payment. “You’re just being shafted again,” Mr Spencer said. “They don’t seem to get the message.” But Mr Spencer said he was more shocked by his water rate, which from July 1, is now 56 cents per kilolitre across the shire.

EMU FEATHERS OR KANGAROO FEATHERS?

The flat rate replaces TRC’s previous threetiered water usage system. Atherton, Walkamin and Tinaroo Park residents on the previous Tier 1 water usage charge (maximum 400 kilolitres) have been slugged an extra 38.17 cents per kilolitre since the new single rate came in. The news was worse for Mt Garnet, Herberton, Ravenshoe and Millstream residents, who have stumped up an extra 49.62 cents per kilolitre compared to their previous Tier 1 usage charge, where the maximum allowed was 900 kilolitres. Malanda, Millaa Millaa and Yungaburra residents copped an increase of 44.51 cents per kilolitre, where the maximum was 500 kilolitres. TRC residents formerly on the bigger Tier 2 water usage charge received a smaller increase than residents on the old Tier 1 charge, while those who were on a Tier 3 charge had a reduction in their water rate under the new system. Mr Spencer has previously complained via email to Tablelands Mayor Joe Paronella. Cr Paronella said he had invited Mr Spencer to meet with him but would not comment further on his situation. However, Cr Paronella defended council’s decision to standardise the water rate, saying it was necessary to streamline rates across the former Atherton, Eacham and

In the 1890’s when the shearers out west were striking for better wages and getting very militant the Government sent the Queensland Light Horse Regiment to keep order. These horsemen, in their spare time chased emus for sport and exercise. Emus can run at 50 klms per hour. If a rider could lean from his galloping horse and pluck a handful of feathers it was then his right to wear them in his hat band.

So when the Australian Light Horsemen were shipped off to Egypt in the First World War all the Queenslanders wore their emu feathers. These were much admired by the rest of the Australian Light Horsemen who immediately insisted they should also have them. To this the Queenslanders replied, “well go home and chase your own bloody emus”. “But we’ll pay for them”, they insisted. That was enough incentive for “our mob” to write home urgently requesting for emu feathers to be sent because they had a good market for them. Consequently, the emu feathers became an official part of the standard dress for all Australian Light Horsemen. Because the Australians always referred to them as the Kangaroo feathers this was the common belief among overseas forces.

NOT HAPPY: Atherton resident Granville Spencer is frustrated by his increasing council rates.

Herberton shires. “We now have to level it all out so everyone in the whole region pays the same,” he said. “Some parts of the region were paying much more than 56 cents per kilolitre, others were paying much less, so we’ve evened it out through the

middle.” Mr Spencer slammed council’s reduction of a rates discount from 10 per cent to 5 per cent this financial year for residents who paid their bill on time. “We’ve lived in areas before where they’ve actually increased the rates discount so there’s incentive for people to pay it early,” he said. “And council is going the total opposite way.” Cr Paronella said halving the rates discount was fair. “We have to meet a budget and that is one of the things we’ve come down on,” he said. “Council is a business, and if we run at a loss and go backwards, it’s not good for anyone.” Pensioners will still be eligible for a discount of 30 per cent on general (land) rates to a maximum of $240 per year. Council is expected to have a projected operating deficit of $453,942 this financial year.

Michelle Cifuentes surveys the damage done to her car by vandals at last month’s netball Junior Club Carnival in Mareeba.

A GROUP of reckless vandals have soured a Mareeba netball carnival after damaging several parked cars in the area late last month. About 28 vehicles were left scratched or had lewd graffiti drawn on them while parents and children attended Mareeba Netball Association’s Junior Club Carnival at Bendigo Bank Recreational Precinct on August 28. The vehicles were parked along Jasper St, Riordan St and Doyle St surrounding Davies Park. Association president Connie Martens was furious upon hearing the news, saying it threatened the club’s reputation to host future carnivals. “I just felt sick in the stomach. Whoever did it not only tarnished the reputation of Mareeba’s community, but being our first carnival, it’s tarnished the reputation we had attached to that,” she said.

Vandals ruin netball carnival

“We got such positive feedback about the carnival and how well it was run…and then you get an incident like that which is going to cost people thousands of dollars. “I’m just so angry about it.” Mrs Martens said she could not understand why the vandals thought it was fun to damage so many cars. “The parents were certainly very angry that somebody would do that,” she said. “They were upset they were targeted that morning and now have to deal with having to have their cars repaired. “Do we now have to have security guards on a Saturday morning when we’re playing netball?” The carnival hosted junior players from clubs in Tully, Cairns, Port Douglas, Ravenshoe, Atherton and Mareeba. Tolga mum and club coach Michelle Ci-

fuentes copped several scratches on her Subaru Forester during the carnival, with the damage bill expected to be in the thousands. “I was really disappointed,” she said. “Half the car will need to be repainted because it’s the whole right side and the bonnet. “The police were really good, I reported it and they got the forensics team out just after lunch.” Mrs Cifeuentes, who is a teacher at Mareeba State High School across the road from the precinct, said her car had never been vandalised in 12 years of working there. Mareeba Police have received 20 formal complaints about vandalism at the carnival so far with investigations continuing. Volunteers patrolled the car park last Saturday when the club hosted local team and interown finals.

MT Emerald’s wind farm project is ready to start turning after the last regulatory hurdle was cleared. The Federal Government’s Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) last month approved RATCH Australia’s bid to buy out the remaining 50 per cent stake in the project held by local developer Port Bajool. The power provider is 80 per cent owned by major Thai power generation company, Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding PCL. The Express was given an exclusive tour of the wind farm’s 2400site by RATCH last week, where 53 wind turbines will eventually be erected, generating 180 megawatts of power. RATCH claims that alone will be enough to power between 75,000 and 90,000 homes each

year. Ergon Energy agreed in May to buy all of the electricity generated by the wind farm through to the end of 2030, with the site to be fully operational by September 2018. RATCH Australia business development executive general manager Anthony Yeates said the project’s pre-construction phase was progressing along smoothly. “We’re working towards getting construction started ASAP,” he said. About 150 jobs would be created during the construction phase of the wind farm starting later this year, with 60 of those to be sourced within the Far North. “There’s been a lot of interest,” Mr Yeates said. “The first construction activities will commence this year on things like road up-

grades.” 15 permanent staff will be employed once the wind farm is operation, with the wind turbines having a lifespan of about 25 years. Meanwhile, Port Bajool will now focus on developing the company’s planned Asia Pacific Energy Innovation Centre which will be built on the wind farm’s site. Discussions have also begun to create world class mountain bike trails and walking tracks within the Mt Emerald site. Workers and suppliers interested in participating in the construction of the project can head to www.downergroup.com.au to register their interest.

Fertility Week – 7 Ways in 7 Days This year Fertility Week is all about ‘7 Ways in 7 Days’. There are 7 common factors that can affect a couple’s ability to get pregnant. 1. Age – unfortunately, fertility and your ability to get pregnant declines with age. Consider seeing a fertility specialist if you are under 35 years and have been trying to get pregnant for a year or more. If you are over 35 years and have been trying for 6 months, you should also consider seeing a fertility specialist. The out-ofpocket cost for an appointment with Dr Anne Coffey and Dr Suvi Hyytinen is between $100-$150.

5. SexuAlly TrAnSmiTTeD inFecTionS – Some STI’s can have a direct impact on the fertility of men and women. It is important to see your GP for screening. 6. ViTAminS AnD minerAlS – A good healthy diet with a range of vitamins and minerals is essential for the body to function properly. Women who are trying to get pregnant need a pregnancy multivitamin with folic acid in it to help reduce the risk of neural tube defects (NTD), such as spina bifida. 7. PArenTing beginS beFore concePTion – It is important to consider your health and lifestyle before becoming pregnant.

2. Timing oF Sex – Timing is everything. Dr Anne Coffey and Dr Suvi Hyytinen offer fully bulk billed ovulation monitoring and can help track your cycle for ovulation.

During Fertility Week, QFG Fertility Nurses are available for a free 20 minute confidential chat about your fertility concerns and the ‘7 Ways in 7 Days’.

3. Smoking, Alcohol AnD cAFFeine – All three factors are known to have damaging effects on reproductive health. Quitting smoking and decreasing your alcohol and caffeine intake can improve your reproductive health and reduce your risks during pregnancy. 4. WeighT AnD exerciSe – Being overweight can affect your chances of getting pregnant and being healthy during pregnancy. The good news is that even modest weight loss can help improve your chances of getting pregnant.

STANDING WATCH: A military re-enactor stands guard beside a wartime truck. PHOTO BY PETER ROY.

HISTORY buffs and military enthusiasts were in their element last weekend, as dozens of wartime relics made their way to the Mareeba Military Muster. Hundreds converged at the Mareeba Turf Club to see a swathe of trucks, jeeps, bikes, tanks, weapons, equipment, uniforms and other memorabilia from a bygone era. Muster committee member Martin Ryan said people had enjoyed their time at the annual event, which moved to Mareeba only this year after eight years in Ravenshoe. “We’ve had a lot of good feedback and

some suggestions for next year which we will certainly take on board,” he said. “The venue’s turned out to be very good. The combined undercover area and grassy area has been terrific.” Exhibitors came from Brisbane, Townsville and across the Far North for the muster, which also featured several items from Mareeba’s Beck War Museum, tanks from the Australian Armour and Artillery Museum and the North Queensland Historical Re-enactment Society’s Kennedy Regiment. Members of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcy-

cle Club made an appearance, while two wartime jeep parades through Byrnes St helped to pique the interest of locals on Saturday. Mr Ryan said the muster’s theme this year was The Year of the Veteran, which aimed to pay tribute to returned servicemen and women as well as commemorate the role the Tablelands played in World War II. “The region had thousands of people up here during the Second World War being trained and a hospital at Rocky Creek,” he said. “It’s part of the Tablelands’ history and it shouldn’t be forgotten.”

The Mareeba Race Course was an absolute picture and pink decorations were hanging from the trees and marquees. Other Lioness Clubs attended from all over the region and also visitors to our town as well as locals. Mareeba Shire Councillor Angela Toppin officially opened the grand affair The afternoon was very successful with over 200 ladies and gentlemen turning up in their finest pink outfits to enjoy the fun and atmosphere. The stalls were a huge success and the raffles went down a treat as did the entertainment for the day. We are grateful for the generous sponsors who help make our event popular every year and thank you to our many supporters who helped behind the scenes as well. We have been holding this event for just over 10 years. We have again raised approximately $10,000. The winners of the lucky Door were 1st Lionella Callegari (ticket no 170); 2nd Carmel Myrteza (ticket no 208). The best Pink Outfits went to 1st Karen Blakeney and 2nd Leanne Murador. The

Pink Ribbon Baskets were won by 1st Louise Dahlstrom (ticket no 251469) and 2nd John Williams (ticket no 251122). The Cake Stall Raffle was won by Lorraine Soper (ticket no C44). The Plant Stall Raffle was won by Kay Morrow (ticket no B27). The 4 x $100 Boards winners were No 1. Maureen Lane (ticket no 22); No 2 Dolly Bell (ticket no 82) No 3 Chesley Smith (ticket no 90) No 4 Sonny. This month the Mareeba Lionesses helped with the Mareeba Shire Council's Seniors morning tea which was held at the International Club, as well as our usual activities which include the hospital trolley, Meals on Wheels and the Mareeba Gladiators Football kiosk. We also assisted at the Lions Club Metrogaine which was held on Sunday August 28 at Arnold Park. We would still like to see a few more seniors coming along to our morning tea and bingo which is held on the second Tuesday of the month at the CWA Hall in Mareeba starting at approximately 9am. If you require any information on Lionesses and our club, please do not hesitate to call Lioness Lyn Simpson on 4092 3953.

Mental health in spotlight A WALK to raise awareness about the impact of suicide will be held in Mareeba this weekend. Registrations are now open for Lifeline’s “Out of the Shadows and Into the Light” community walks, which will see thousands of Australians gather around the country during the week of World Suicide Prevention Day this Saturday. The walk aims to offer support and hope to those touched by suicide. Lifeline Crisis Support and Suicide Prevention program manager Lee-Anne Borham said the walks were a chance for community members to offer support and hope to one another, while also being part of a conversation to reduce the stigma around suicide. “We hope to raise awareness about suicide prevention and to unite as a community to prevent further deaths by suicide,” she said.

“With recent ABS data showing that 2,864 Australians — a 10 year-plus high — took their own lives in 2014, it’s clear this is a big issue in Australia. We as an organisation, a health sector and community need to do more and better.” Lifeline is calling on the community to get involved with the event by either joining or starting a walk. “With eight Australians lost to suicide every day, events like this are important in raising awareness for Lifeline’s 24/7 crisis support and suicide prevention services,” Ms Borham said. The walk will be held from 5:30am, starting at Arnold Park. A light breakfast will be provided following the walk. To register, head to www.outoftheshadows.org.au/walks/lifeline-mareeba-2016. Literacy focus of book sale Community Literacy Projects see Australian authors and ILF ambassadors team up with major publishers and students from remote communities to write and publish books in English and First languages. The book sale coincides with Indigenous Literacy Day today, which aims to spread awareness about the need to improve literacy levels and opportunities for indigenous children living in the most remote and isolated parts of Australia. Both libraries have been raising money for ILF since 2011. In 2015, the foundation provided books to more than 230 remote communities in Australia.

A BOOK sale this week is helping to raise money for Indigenous literacy. Running from Monday to this Saturday, Mareeba and Kuranda libraries are holding a book sale to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF). Money raised will be spent on ILF’s three core programs – “Book Supply”, “Book Buzz” and “Community Literacy Projects”. Book Supply sees books and literary resources gifted to remote communities, while Book Buzz supplies culturally and developmentally appropriate books and first language translations for babies and toddlers in remote communities.

Past and present students unite A HEALTHY dose of nostalgia was in the air as hundreds of past and present students celebrated St Anthony’s 50th anniversary late last month. A strong turnout at August 27’s dinner dance at Dimbulah Memorial Hall was followed by a formal Sunday mass and school exhibition later that morning. School principal Brad Williams said the event was enjoyable for all involved. “It was a really good opportunity for people to catch up with old class-

mates and friends,” he said. “We had a really successful weekend.” Upwards of 300 people attended over the course of Sunday, including Father James O’Connor, who helped establish St Anthony’s in 1966. “Father O’Connor proved to be a real character with lots of dry humour recounting memories and stories of his time at the school,” Mr Williams said. “He was certainly one of the highlights.” In a special moment, St Anthony’s first enrolled student Lionella

Callegari reunited with Sister Carmel Parker, who taught her at the school. The duo were on hand to cut the school’s anniversary cake along with Father O’Connor. “We had some great classroom displays set up where people could step back through time and recount memories,” Mr Williams said. A host of activities were available on the day for both children and adults, including a jumping castle, chocolate poker table and mini pesca competition.

THE FEAST OF OUR LADY OF THE CHAIN

St Thomas’s Catholic Church, Mareeba Sunday 11th September - Mass at 2.30pm Following mass there will be a procession of the statue of Our Lady of The Chain followed by a barbeque to be held on the school grounds with hot chips, gnocchi, spaghetti, steak, sausages and a licensed bar. The tea/coffee stall will have a wonderful array of sweets including Italian cannoli, crostoli and nougat. Try your luck at the pesca with fantastic prizes to be won and don’t forget the wonderful fireworks display at 8.30pm. This year we are delighted to bring to Mareeba an entertainer direct from Brisbane. “Fortunato Isgro” is a singer/entertainer who performs throughout Australia. The style of music he performs includes English classics from the 1950’s to 1970’s, plus traditional Italian music. He plays the keyboard and guitar. Fortunato started performing professionally at the age of sixteen at various clubs and restaurants across the Gold Coast. Fortunato is a popular entertainer within the Australian-Italian community and performs at numerous Italian clubs and festivals throughout Australia, including the Ingham Australian Italian Festival.

Movie variety

They say variety is the spice of life – and there sure is plenty of it at Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema this week. WAR DOGS has received favourable reviews and is based on a true story that is almost totally unbelievable. It makes for excellent cinema entertainment. Also new on screen is the colourful animation THE SAUSAGE PARTY, which is unashamedly aimed at adults with its vibrant mix of language and innuendo. Continuing for a second week is the drama THE SHALLOWS – which has also received critical acclaim and is highly recommended for edge of your seat cinema entertainment. With the school holidays only days away, the cinema will also be showing advanced sneak previews of the wonderful Disney holiday feature PETE'S DRAGON on both Saturday and Sunday – so catch it on the Mareeba big screen before everyone else.

veroli (Jonah Hill), we start with the expectation that this is a David v Goliath story (pardon the pun). It's more like Dumb and Dumber, though, and it's not just these two guys who qualify for the title roles; the US Department of Defense is also in the frame. In time we realise that Diveroli is an unpleasant, unscrupulous, morally bankrupt, foul mouthed manipulator. And then there are his negative attributes ... David is seduced by the promise of money, given his wife is pregnant and massage is a lousy business. He has no idea what he is in for. Story aside, what works for the audience is the contrast between Diveroli, the brash, bulldog of a man, an operator, and his friend, the mild mannered David, who

Cane research funding boost QUEENSLAND is set to lead research and development of sugar cane after a $11.4 million funding boost for a key industry body. Sugar Research Australia (SRA) will receive $2.85 million over four years from the State Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) to drive industry research and development at the organisation’s Brisbane laboratories. “DAF investment in SRA is supporting priority research areas such as the plant breeding program and better and faster methods of creating sugarcane varieties and adding value to the SRA breeding program,” SRA chairman Dr Ron Swindells said. “The industry places a high priority on research into varieties with a range of traits including tonnes, sugar, and disease resistance, and the breeding program is the single biggest area of focus for Sugar Research Australia.” SRA representatives visited Mossman and Tablelands farmers last month to discuss the latest projects in sugar cane research and development. Finding a more efficient cane variety which produced a greater yield and combating Yellow Canopy Syndrome (YCS) are two of the key issues currently affecting the industry. DAF’s funding will support 19 sugarcane research, development and extension projects including the search for a cure for YCS. SRA has also begun a new research program aimed at reducing the amount of lost sugarcane from mechanical harvesting, which costs the Australian industry $150 million a year. That project is supported by the Federal Department of Agriculture and Water Resources.

Sugar research and development has received a welcome financial boost in Queensland.

Bigger banana levy backed by Tablelands growers TABLELANDS banana growers have joined with their Australian counterparts to back a proposed increase to their industry levy. The results of the national vote last month to increase the Plant Health Australia (PHA) levy have now been released by the independent ballot administrator. The administrator declared that 55 per cent of

the national production area was represented in the votes, and of those votes, 84 per cent were in favour of an increased levy. When the levy regulation is implemented, the PHA levy will move from the current rate of 0.0103 cents per kilogram to 0.5 cents per kilogram. Australian Banana Grower’s Council (ABGC) Chair Doug Phillips thanked those

growers who voted. “The vote to increase the ballot is the first step in the process to cease production and secure the Panama TR4 infected farm at Tully,” he said.. “The increased levy was one of the conditions of the sales agreement and ABGC anticipates other matters in that process will be sorted out within the next month.”

suGar rEPOrts MOssMaN MiLL CrushiNG statistiCs WEEk 13 Mossman Mill processed 48,438 tonnes of cane for the week at an average crushing rate of 352 tonnes/hour with plant availability over budget. Increased crushing rates were targeted to make up ground from earlier wet weather and increased plant reliability has achieved the best weekly throughput at Mossman Mill for several years. Factory efficiency and sugar production rates have also improved over previous weeks. Challenges have been welcomed by the cane transport department to keep cane supply up to the mill. Major downtime for the week was on the milling train for a failed intercarrier drive motor and some feeding problems around No.2 Mill. CCS has remained steady over the past few weeks. Crush statistiCs: • Mossman tonnes crushed for the week: 48,438 tonnes • CCS for week: 11.78 • Total cane crushed to date: 389,276 tonnes • CCS Average to date: 11.09 • 2016 Crop estimate: 850,000 tonnes

In June, a glut of bananas on the market had some Tablelands farmers struggling to make ends meet. Cavendish banana farmers across the region were getting prices below the cost of production for several months earlier this year, with good growing conditions leading to an oversupply on the market.

EXPRESS sPORT

Mareeba team does the double A MAREEBA netball team has capped off a stellar Saturday on court after taking grand final wins in two separate competitions. Under 14 squad Huff n Puff trounced Kryptonites 31-22 in the Mareeba Netball Association club grand final before backing up barely an hour later to edge out Douglas 31-29 in the intertown grand final at Bendigo Bank Recreational Precinct. Huff n Puff coach Michelle Cifuentes was full of praise for her side’s resilience and determination in grabbing double wins. “As a group they just pushed each other and worked well together from start to finish. They didn’t drop their heads,” she said.

“They’re a very versatile team and they’re happy to go where they’re needed on the court.” Both sides were neck and neck until half-time before Puff pulled away. Cifuentes praised goal attack Alexis Ford for her dominant performance inside the circle during the match. “Lexi managed to get the ball into the circle and convert most times she took the shot,” she said. It was a far tougher affair against Douglas in the intertown final, Puff down by one point at the end of the first quarter, level at the second and then down again by four points by the close of the third.

But a sparkling performance in the final quarter gave the home team an edge. “They just absolutely flew in the last quarter,” Cifuentes said. “I said to them “This is it, your last chance, go as hard as you can”.” Puff keeper Gemmaly Madrid was a standout at the back, keeping her side in the game and also winning the umpire’s award for player of the final. Meanwhile, Douglas defeated Tolga Sparks 32-7 in the Under 12 intertown final while Atherton’s Saphyras dominated Douglas 34-25 in the Under 18 game. In the other club grand finals, Fireballs proved too good for Assassins with a 34-30 victory in the

Under 18 division, while the Unstoppables lived up to their name, beating Fusion Girls 13-10 in the Under 12 division. Unstoppables coach Tammy Devine was delighted with the win in the first grand final she had ever coached. “They just never gave up and kept going right to the end,” she said. “The shooters were on point which really helped.” Unstoppables goal defence Dinithi Heenkenda proved the difference in the match, a stellar performance earning her player of the final. “I was amazed by the girls’ performance, they were awesome,” Devine said. “It was an excellent win for us.”

THE Mareeba Bulls are into the FNQ Premier League grand final after a thrilling penalty shootout against Stratford Dolphins on Saturday night. The defending champions made it known they had every intention of going back-toback as the match finished 4-4 after 120 minutes of football. The Bulls dominated the opening 45 minutes, but a Joe Rusch penalty in the 17th minute was the difference at halftime as the Dolphins went into the break at 1-0 up. Rusch got his second on the 51st minute after finishing a strong header, once again against the run of play, before a Paul Ruiz screamer lit up the Bulls. The small victory was short lived when Stratford grabbed another goal, Rusch getting his hat-trick to open up a 3-1 lead. Stratford looked in control with under 20 minutes to go, but the Bulls refused to quit as Ruiz once again stepped up, bagging his second goal on the 83rd minute and then

his third to make it 3-3 by the 94th minute, sending the match into extra time. The Bulls started the extra time period with good intensity, pushing the home team back. But Dolphins midfielder Mitch Bevan got his team in front in the 105th minute for a 4-3 lead. Mareeba struck back soon afterwards when Robert Pendenza finished off a sweeping move to bring the game to 4-4 and head into penalties. Both sides scored the first two, Rusch and Angelo Serafin converting for the Dolphins while Steven Cater and Wayne Srhoj did the same for the Bulls. Pendenza scored Mareeba’s third before Stratford defender Gary Cunningham became first to flinch, missing the target and giving Bulls youngster Jaydon Wells the chance to hit the front. The young striker obliged and gave Mareeba a 4-2 lead. Bevan missed the Dolphins fourth to gift the Bulls the win and finish off one of the most entertaining semi-finals in FNQ football history.

Bulls coach Alex Srhoj praised his side's performance after once again showing their trademark never say die qualities. “The boys were outstanding tonight, everyone doubted us, everyone said we were finished, but inside the camp we knew our best was not far away and tonight they all stepped up and showed what they are capable of,” he said. “It was a crazy game, but I thought we deserved to win. We dominated in long patches but conceding four goals was definitely not part of the plan." The Bulls now enjoy the week off, while the Dolphins will play the Southside Comets for a shot at the grand final. The Bulls reserves have moved through to the preliminary final after a 2-1 win over the Marlin Coast Rangers on Sunday. Goals from Jamie Wilesmith and Damien Wildman got the Bulls through to take on the Leichhardt Lions this weekend.

Roosters season over after semifinal loss The Atherton Roosters 2016 season has ended following a 40-4 loss to Tully in Sunday’s Cairns District Rugby League elimination final, at Barlow Park. After setting up a 14-0 lead at the break, Tully went on with the job in the second stanza and it took the Roosters 70 minutes to score their first points. The Roosters had all the ball procession in the opening 20 minutes, but couldn’t crack Tully who were full of energy in defence. Roosters coach Dean Howard, who recently re-signed for 2017, said his side had used up a lot of energy in the first half and the afternoon heat didn’t help. “We had a lot chances with all that ball in the opening minutes, but couldn’t get over the line.” He said. “It was a disappointing way to end the year but overall we have had good season and put a lot things in place which we will take into 2017 and continue to grow our strengths.” In Sunday’s under 18 elimination final, the young Roosters were also bundled out of the premiership race 44-16 by Kangaroos.

Heat boys do Mareeba proud despite loss HEAD-TO-HEAD: FNQ Heat captain Jamie Carroll in action during last Saturday’s grand final. PHOTO: PAUL SMITH/ FOOTBALL QUEENSLAND

HEARTBROKEN FNQ Heat captain Jamie Carroll has praised his teammates after a shock 3-2 loss to Redlands United in the NPL Queensland grand final last weekend. The former Mareeba Bull said he was proud to fly the flag for his old club, alongside Josh Pin, Shaun Owens and Tamas MaffeyStumpe. “We’re definitely proud to represent our home town of Mareeba,” Carroll said. “Shaun Owens has had a great season this year, Tamas came mid-way through and did the job for the boys and Josh Pin has definitely stepped up another level.” Heat striker Kieran Sanders opened his side’s account in just the fourth minute of the match at Perry Park last Saturday, before Redlands’ sharpshooter Alistair Davis hit back with a neat header in the 23rd minute. It would be Sanders again who came to the Heat’s rescue, heading home a Carroll cross to go 2-1 up in the 39th minute. After a dogged performance for most of the second half, United managed to break through the Heat’s defence with a bad fumble by Heat keeper Kevin Ward, gifting defender Jake Sherwood Redlands’ second of the night. The match barely broke into extra time

when Redlands midfielder Michael Lee scored a wonder strike on the counter to give his side a maiden NPL grand final victory. “That’s the beauty of football I suppose, you gotta play for 90 minutes, you can’t fall asleep with five minutes to go” Carroll said. “It just wasn’t to be…I couldn’t be prouder of the boys for their performance this season. “To make a grand final and to be the first FNQ side in history to do it is something we’ve got to be proud of.” Defender Owens said it was a bitter pill to swallow after leading for most of the game. “It was pretty disappointing,” he said. “It was a fast game, grand finals come down to those 90 minutes and you give it absolutely everything you’ve got. It was another level.” While both Carroll and Owens were coy on their playing futures, the duo hinted they would consider staying on at the club. “There’s a lot of offers going around at the moment with NPL clubs around Australia,” Carroll said. “I’m pretty loyal to the Heat and we’ll have to have a chat to the management and the club in the next couple of weeks and see what their plans are.”
