Chief Pilot calls it a day THE sun set on an illustrious career last Friday as Far North Queensland business Raging Thunder Balloon Adventures farewelled their Mareeba operation’s Chief Pilot Steve Hawke. Mr Hawke, who has been with the company for the better part of 28 years, has forged a successful career that has consisted of 4,650 hours of flying time, 4200 flights in the Mareeba Valley and more than 6,500 landings. Mr Hawke began his career with Raging Thunder in 1990 as a white water rafting guide, however was encouraged by his superiors to widen his skillset and thus he began applying his trade in ballooning in 1993. After receiving his private ballooning licence in 1993, he then acquired his commercial licence in 1995, and within a short three years, Mr Hawke was promoted to Mareeba’s Chief Pilot in 1998. Mr Hawke noted the dramatic change he has seen since he began his ballooning career more than two decades ago.

“It’s been interesting to see how heavily populated Mareeba Valley has become when comparing it to my first year as Chief Pilot,” he said. “As a result, that has made ballooning more challenging over time, however to this day it is a job that I love and one that gives me a great sense of reward.” Due to the continual increase in Mareeba’s population and therefore greater congestion throughout the Mareeba Valley, Mr Hawke showed his gratitude to the community who he said have been so accommodating throughout his career. “There are so many landowners who have been extremely kind in letting us use their property, and for that I am extremely thankful and appreciative,” he said. Mr Hawke said his father was a fixed wing pilot, and even though he grew up around aviation, the beginning of his ballooning career was an opportunistic one as opposed to a childhood dream.

“I somewhat fell into ballooning,” he said. “The two previous owners Denis Cole and Fred Ariel saw potential in me and encouraged me to take the ballooning route, and for that I am very thankful. “Raging Thunder is a fantastic company for training and up skilling staff in-house, and I was lucky enough to be one of the beneficiaries.” Despite last week being about Mr Hawke and his amazing accomplishments in the ballooning industry, he showed his selfless side and was quick to heap praise on his colleagues. “We have a wonderful group of staff here who work unbelievably hard and it’s a team I’m extremely proud to be a part of,” he said. Mr Hawke was particularly emotional when speaking about the role his personal assistant Jaime Payne has played in his long and distinguished career with Raging Thunder. “Jaime started here 12 years ago working as a casual cook one day a week, before mov-

ing into an administration and Chief Pilot Assistant role,” he said. “She has been an integral member of this team and has majorly assisted me in her 12 years here. “I can’t put in to words how important she has been.” Ms Payne reciprocated Mr Hawke’s praise, talking glowingly about the significant impact he has had on her life from both a personal and professional standpoint. “Steve is an amazing mentor and friend to us all,” she said. “He is someone that we all highly look up to and he helps us become better versions of ourselves.” “From a professional perspective, I don’t think you would find anyone as experienced as Steve is across the whole operation. “He’s not just the Chief Pilot, he manages this operation from the bottom up and has everything covered.” Ms Payne said Mr Hawke’s expertise is so sought after that

their governing body CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) often turn to him for advice in the industry. “Steve is one of the most knowledgeable people in the ballooning industry in the country,” she said. Mr Hawke said he is leaving his role as Chief Pilot as he wants a break from the pressure and responsibility that comes with such an important position. “I want to stay in the ballooning industry, however I look forward to taking some time off and coming back solely in a piloting role,” he said. “Whether that is here in Mareeba with Raging Thunder or somewhere else remains to be seen.” Whether Mr Hawke remains in Mareeba long term or decides to move on, he has left a lasting legacy on the nation’s ballooning industry and the Mareeba community as a whole that will be remembered for a long time.

KUR-World to provide huge economic boost

BY JOSEPH BARCLAY

FAR North Queensland is a hotbed for tourism which sees millions of visitors each year, and our region’s leading industry is set for a further boost courtesy of the proposed KUR-World development. The project, which is set to cost more than $850 million dollar, will consist of a Five Star 200 room eco-resort, Four Star 270 apartment hotel, 56 lifestyle villas, 286 premium villas, 21 Queensland lots, 25 glamping tents and a 12-hole golf course. It will also boast a KURWorld retail, commercial and dining precinct, tertiary education campus, health and wellbeing retreat, nature based adventure park, rainforest education centre, equestrian centre and farm theme park. KUR-World Project Director Mark Lawson said KUR-World will provide economic stimulus for the region, including an injection into other existing tourism attractions by attracting more visitors to Cairns. “KUR-World will provide a tourism experience that is not offered in one destination elsewhere in the Tropical North, offering an agricultural theme park

that exemplifies the best that the Tablelands has to offer,” he said. “The KUR-World theme park will be the main tourist attraction (other than the rainforest zipline), and over time, we propose to build up the accommodation side of the project as the theme park expands and creates greater international interest. “The final jewel in the crown is the Five Star Eco-Resort.” A strong focus of political discussion in this region often surrounds jobs and growth, and that is something KUR-World will deliver in spades. “If approved, KUR-World will create 348 full-time and part-time jobs at the peak of construction in 2020-2021,” Mr Lawson said. “When complete, we will be able to offer the equivalent of 970 full-time operational jobs, which translates to 1,450 fulltime, part time and casual jobs for a community that needs additional employment opportunity.” Although the figures shine an extremely positive light on the benefits of the proposed KURWorld development, there are still numerous grievances held by those who oppose the project. One key area of concern has been the environmental impacts

this eco-resort could have on the community, however, they are grievances Mr Lawson believes are being misrepresented. “Due to the size and complexity of the project, it is unavoidable that some misinformation and confusion exists within the community,” he said. “We would like to reiterate that this EIS process is the op-

population increase of more than 4,000 in a decade’s time. “A population increase in Kuranda of over 4,000 people is incorrect,” he said. “KUR-World is expected to generate demand for approximately an additional 35 dwellings per year over 10 years. “The population increase of Kuranda will only be attrib-

of the Kuranda Range Road, and Mr Lawson shared the community’s concerns regarding congestion and safety. “Anyone who has driven that road knows that it is struggling even now, particularly in the wet,” he said. “It is anticipated that even if KUR-World did not proceed the Kuranda Range will reach ca-

World is just shining a light on an existing deficiency in the infrastructure,” he said. “The bottom line is, with or without KUR-World, the Kuranda Range does not provide for the needs of the region or our tourism industry into the future and I’m sure this is one of the big things on the list for anyone in-

uted to those persons seeking to move to Kuranda for the stable employment that KUR-World will bring, and those that choose KUR-World premium villas and lifestyle villas as their permanent place of residence, which is anticipated to be a maximum of 30% for these accommodation products.” Much of KUR-World’s viability moving forward is dependent on the potential upgrade

pacity somewhere between 2025 and 2030, and by all accounts it’s likely to be sooner rather than later.” Mr Lawson said there are several mitigation measures proposed to ensure road safety is not impacted by the development. “However, the project does not increase the capacity of the Kuranda Range, which is a $1 billion problem that the State Government faces now, KUR-

volved in politics here in the Far North, or maybe it will simply be pushed into the next election cycle.” Mr Lawson said the timeline for KUR-World is currently proposed as a nine-year construction period, with the aim of being fully operational somewhere around 2028, depending on how timely the Environmental Impact Statement process progresses.

Water main works near completion

Mareeba’s water main upgrade is nearing completion, with over 1200m of new pipeline being installed along Byrnes Street. Contractors are now working on Rankin Street with the installation of the remaining pipeline set to be completed by the Christmas break. Mayor Tom Gilmore said the project delivery had been first class. “It’s a major piece of work and the team at FGF have been doing an outstanding job dealing with some unexpected delays while keeping the disruption to a minimum, ” he said. “We thank business owners, residents, motorists and the community at large for their cooperation and patience while this critical project is being carried out.” Council expects the project will be commissioned in the new year, securing the town’s water supply and meeting increasing demands. “The existing pipeline has been in place for many years, and it is imperative that it be

replaced as not only is it struggling to meet current demand, but due to the fact it is reaching the end of its life and may fracture which would cause serious property damage and disruption to businesses in Mareeba’s main street,” he said. Minister for Local Government Stirling Hinchliffe applauded the Council on its progress of the works. “This is the kind of project the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program is designed to deliver, and the Queensland Government is proud to contribute almost $1.5 million,” Mr Hinchliffe said. “The water main upgrade is a wonderful example of what can be achieved for the community when the two levels of government work together.” The $2.5 million Mareeba CBD Water Trunk Main Upgrade is a joint initiative of Mareeba Shire Council and the Queensland Government through the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Programme.

Cr Gilmore said it is vital that ageing infrastructure is replaced to avoid potential catastrophe and projects of great scale such as this would simply not be possible without support from the State Government. “Grants such as this that are

Chamber joins calls for Range to be added to National highway network The Mareeba Chamber of Commerce has joined the chorus of organisations calling on the Queensland Government to lobby for the inclusion of Kennedy Highway to Mareeba to the National Highway Network. Recently, the Queensland Government’s National Land Transport Network (NLTN) submission to the Federal Government sought the extension of the National Highway from Cairns Central Business District to Smithfield. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Joe Moro said while the government is congratulated for proposing the extension, it fell short of delivering the benefits to a road which was performing well below par in terms of efficiency. “Mareeba’s position as the largest urban centre in Far North Queensland outside Cairns (Australian Bureau of Statistics Census, 2016) is a credit to the work done by all levels of government in helping the community grow and prosper,” Mr Moro said. “Central to maintaining and strengthening this growth is an efficient, safe road network. “The Cairns to Mareeba sec-

tion of the Kennedy Highway (including Kuranda Range Road) is a critical transport link for a number of industries including, but not limited to, freight, business, tourism and agriculture. “The range alone carries approximately 9,000 vehicles per day, an increase of around three per cent every year (Cummings Economics, 2018). “In its current condition, the road is constraining heavy vehicle movements, which could negatively impact the region’s growth.” Mr Moro said the Cairns to Mareeba section including the Kuranda Range played a major role in carrying freight between Cairns and the hinterland area being the Atherton Tablelands. “It is the most efficient route over the range, and is part of a link that services around 60,000 people with road transport,” Mr Moro said. “However, a glaring anomaly is the fact that Kuranda Range Road is unable to handle the standard freight efficient type of vehicle on Australian roads, B-doubles and will continue to unless there is significant investment in the road.”

“While we are primarily concerned with freight transport, the chamber fears the lack of a freight efficient transport network will have detrimental effects on the growth of Mareeba and the Atherton Tablelands, and potentially act as a cap to major

New state campaigers to host Tablelands meeting

The coordinator of the Boot Brisbane Referendum Campaign, Bill Bates has outlined the plans of the campaign moving forward...

Our Mission is to secure, for the residents of Central and North Queensland, a referendum to vote yes or no on the proposition of forming a new State of the Commonwealth of Australia.” The catalyst to our action was the 2017 Redistribution which increased the quota of voters per electorate from 29 to 33 thousand and created 4 additional electorates in SEQ of the now 93 electorates, over 70 are less than 250km from the Brisbane CBD. Representation of Central and North Queensland has been diminished and it is reasonable to expect that future Electoral Reviews will result in the similar outcomes. Nearly 75% of State Parliament members must meet the expectation of their South East Queensland constituents to be elected and if that means throwing the residents of Central and North Queensland regional voters ‘under the bus’, they will do it. The recent amendment to the Vegetation Management Act is a prime example while the proposed Broadening and Enhancing of Reef Protection Regulations and the draft policy to restrict trans-shipping is a con-

tinuation of regressive policies. The status quo guaranties the relentless reduction in the political representation of the residents of Central and North Queensland. This only serves to reinforce the ever-growing belief that the Brisbane parliament can no longer advance the interests of the residents of and further the development of Central and North Queensland while satisfying the expectations of SEQ voters. Only statehood can arrest this regression. Since June we have held three public forums, the Cairns Inaugural Forum in 6 June, Townsville Forum 28 August and Cairns Forum II on 11 October. Guest speakers have included Bob Katter, Robbie Katter, Ron Crew (Cairns Port Development), Nick Dametto, George Christensen, Geoff Cox (Burdekin Canegower), Henry Fracchia (Premise Engineering), Professor David Flint (AM), David Pellowe (Pellowe Talk) and Phil Cassell (Chairman NQ Civil Construction Association). Thanks to the generosity of Mr Mark Watkins in making the function facilities of the Mt Uncle Distillery available to Boot Brisbane, we will be holding a Tablelands Forum on Sunday 9 December 2-4pm. The New State Forum is primarily an information session detailing, constitutional aspects, history of previous New State Movements, the 1967 NSW Referendum for the creation of the State of New

England and the benefits Statehood will bring. Now that the venue, date and time have been set, we will seek to secure guest speakers. We would like to include an industry or business leader from the Tablelands. There are many issues that are adversely impacting on the safety, security and opportunities of the residents of the Tablelands that are the direct result of the Brisbane Parliament’s actions or inactions. If we are simply going to accept the status quo, Tableland residents need to ask themselves, when do they expect Brisbane to advance their region and provide greater opportunities for them and future generations. To bundle all the issues facing the Tablelands residents and focus on a single issue is an oversimplification but if any issue encompasses all that is wrong with the status quo, then the inaction on the upgrading of the Karanda Range Road is it. The problem has been foreseen for more than a generation, it has been subject to various studies, the road is regularly closed for lengthy periods as a result of vehicle accidents, some of which have resulted in serious injury and deaths. After the most recent serious incident on September 13, the considered response from Brisbane’s visiting Minister of Transport, Mark Bailey, on October 6 was merely that the Kuranda Range was a prime candidate for integrated variable speed limit

FARM MACHINERY REPAIRS

signs. In light of successive governments spending tens of billions of dollars to reduce travel times of Brisbane commuters by a few minutes, his response is contemptuous. Under the status quo when do the residents of the Tablelands expect Brisbane deliver an upgrade that will provide for their safety and the economic development of the region. Boot Brisbane is not political aligned and is willing to give bouquets to individuals and groups that ‘actively’ give support to the creation of a New State and ‘brickbats’ to whose would deny the residents of Central and North Queensland a referendum to vote on the proposition. We are providing a single platform for all those actively advocating for the same outcome. In the 21st century we believe it is incumbent on Queensland’s regional residents and leaders (in politics, industry, commerce and the community) to invoke the provisions of Chapter VI of the Australian Constitution to create a new state, with a parliament that is fully accountable to them and governs in their best interests first and foremost. An inaugural Tablelands meeting for the creation of a new State in Central and North Queensland will he held this Sunday, December 9, at Mt Uncle Distillery from 2pm to 4pm. Additional information is available at www.bootbrisbane. com and on the Boot Brisbane Facebook page.

A gift of art this Christmas

There will be an abundance of art on display this Thursday as the Mareeba Arts Society host their Christmas Shopping Party.

THE Mareeba Arts Society is calling on the community to attend their Christmas Shopping Party held at the Mareeba Arts Centre tomorrow night. With complimentary punch, wine, nibbles along with a 10% discount on gifts purchased on the night, Mareeba Arts Society Treasurer Merilyn Holmes hopes to see a strong crowd on hand. “There will be an array of local handmade art on display, of which will include pottery, painting, glass ornaments, craft work, jewellery items, sculptures, quilts and much more,” she said. “The event is a great opportunity for the Mareeba community to shop locally and support

our artists, all while having the chance to buy an array of wonderful gifts as Christmas approaches.” Ms Holmes said preparations for the event have been positive, and she was quick to heap praise on the members of the not-forprofit club for their tireless efforts in ensuring this event is a success. “From the artists to the committee members, they have worked extremely hard and it’s great to see it culminate in the wonderful art that is on display in our arts centre,” she said. “The artists are eager to exhibit their work and hopefully it gains a strong response from

those in attendance.” Ms Holmes said she would like to see more local people become members of the Mareeba Arts Society, and believes the Christmas Shopping Party could entice others to get involved. “The club is one that accepts people of all ages and levels of experience,” she said. “It’s an extremely rewarding club to be a part of and allows you to express yourself through the form of art all while socialising with a great group of people.” The Christmas Shopping Party will be held at the Mareeba Arts Centre on Thursday, December 6 and will start at 5pm.

“I love capturing on my camera the little things that we miss when we can’t see all the finer details. A lot of times, I don’t even realise what a fun shot I have taken until I zoom in on the image. Sometimes the photo is an absolute fluke shot. I could be trying to take a photo of something else, and happen to capture a little moment in nature that is just magical.” Photographers can join the Facebook group and enter their photos – Tablelands and Surrounding Photography Group.

Beautifying Byrnes Street

BYRNES Street has an added touch of green as the start of beautification works began last week. Multiple native trees have now been planted along Mareeba’s main street as the CBD Water Main Upgrade nears completion. Restoration works have included resealing of the street, line marking and now landscaping work to help beautify the town. The trees planted in the new garden beds to date are Acmena hemilampra, or blush satinash.

Beware of Bats in summer heat FAR North Queensland was gripped with a heatwave last week, and with it came a spike in people being bitten and scratched by bats across Cairns. Due to the extreme weather, bats were falling out of trees more than usual and coming in contact with residents. The rise in scratches and bites concerns health authorities, and they are urging residents and visitors not to touch bats as some may be infected with the potentially deadly Australia bat lyssavirus (ALBV). There have been three cases of human infection due to ABLV, all in Queensland and all fatal; in 1996, 1998 and 2013. With Mareeba also experiencing extremely hot weather conditions for the majority of last week, it raises concerns as to whether the town could see an uptick in instances regarding bats similar to those seen in Cairns. A Mareeba Shire Council spokesman said Council’s advice is to avoid touching the bats. “We understand there are many visitors in the area that may not have any experience living with bats, so we encourage those people to proceed with caution if you happen to see a bat on the ground or in your personal vicinity,” he said. “It’s imperative that if anyone does see a flying fox on the ground to contact the Tolga Bat Hospital immediately.” The spokesman said the public can read MSC’s Flying Fox

A native rainforest tree with glossy green foliage, bright red new growth and clusters of small white spring flowers. And, Buckinghamia, or Ivory curl flower. An ornamental native with dark glossy leaves and long white scented flower spikes which cascade downward. Very popular subtropical street tree, robust and shapely. Futher landscaping works will continue along Byrnes Street as part of the ongoing beautification works.

Management Plan on their website to find out more information on bats in the region. Tolga Bat Hospital Director Jenny Maclean said this is the first heat distress event ever in North Queensland. “We’ve been liaising with the necessary people in southern parts of the country who have dealt with heat distress events so we can better learn how to manage it,” she said. “We’re seeing an increase in people being bitten and scratched as certain people are trying to help babies who have fallen on to the ground from the grasp of their dead mothers.” Ms Maclean said in relation to ABLV, although it is a genuine concern, it is easily avoidable. “I do feel the prevalence of the ABLV threat is being quite overblown,” she said. “If you don’t touch a bat you will not contract the disease, it is that simple.” Ms Maclean noted that the Tablelands saw more than 200 bats migrate here as a result of the heatwave, and noted that she hopes MSC will take this opportunity to revegetate an area for colonies in the future. “If an area is revegetated to where there is water and a healthy understory, it will entice bats to come here naturally and not just for a heat distress event,” she said. If anyone is bitten or scratched by a bat, they are urged to see a doctor immediately.

Field Days give back at event launch MAREEBA and Atherton Rotary members, community organisations and local politicians converged on the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds for the official launch of the 2019 Rotary FNQ Field Days last Thursday. In what is shaping to be the biggest Rotary FNQ Field Days event since its inception more than 25 years ago, last week’s launch was about updating the public on how proceedings are going thus far, all while making their annual donations and recognising the event’s strategic partners. 2019’s Rotary FNQ Field Days will consist of a further 32 stalls available for those wishing to exhibit, and Rotary FNQ Field Days Chairwoman Ida Portella said the event is starting to gather real momentum as we head into the new year. “Today’s launch was fantastic and it’s great to see the huge amount of support we receive every year,” she said. “We took the opportunity at our launch to make our donations which is different from years past where we have do-

nated after the event. “With a central focus of this year’s event surrounding mental health, we thought it would be good to donate to the Men’s Shed organisations in the region.” Ms Portella said $30,000 was donated, of which the Mareeba and Atherton Men’s Shed received $10,000 each, while the Julatten, Malanda, Kuranda, Herberton and Ravenshoe Men’s Shed branches shared the remaining $10,000 evenly. Ms Portella said she would like to thank the event’s three strategic partners. “I would like to recognise Mareeba Tyrepower, MSF Sugar and Mareeba Mazda for their unwavering support and their generous financial commitment,” she said. “I also want to thank Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore for attending; the backing of the local Council is something we are extremely appreciative of.” The 2019 FNQ Rotary Field Days will be held from May 29-31 at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds.

Public invited to farewell teachers

PCYC Mareeba

Ready for Work What

Ready for Work is designed to help young people transition into the workforce. The program includes:Resume preparation and writing Job interview skills Job search advice Understanding employer expectations Networking opportunities with local businesses and employers to share their experiences and industry knowledge Employability skills such as communication in the workplace, working in a team, problem solving, planning, organising and more!

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE: Members of the public are invited to come along and farewell the long serving Mareeba High teachers.

2018 will be the final year at Mareeba State High School for a number of their most well respected teachers, and students and community members alike will have the opportunity to show their appreciation as the school hosts an Open Invitation Farewell next Wednesday. Christina Ellacott, Trevor Scott and Felix Acha will call it a day at the conclusion of the school year, all three of whom each have more than three decades experience at the school. MSHS will also say goodbye to long serving teachers Tim Ralph and Liam Daly, who will be moving on to teach at Smithfield State High School and Woree State High School respectively. Tim Ralph, who has been a teacher at MSHS for the better part of 18 years, noted the significant role the school has played in his life. “It’s been a very big part of my life for 18 years,” he said. “I think it’s the students, community support and the local families that make it such a special school.” Mr Ralph said he has been

fortunate enough to work with a lot of great teachers at the school. “It’s probably the dedication of the staff that has made it such a great place to work all these years, and I would like to thank my colleagues for their help throughout my time here,” he said. “I would love to be able to individually name each and every person that has had an impact on me, however there’s too many to mention. “However I would like to recognise those people who I have worked with since I started here, we have built great relationships and have they have all helped make this job so rewarding.” Mr Ralph said he will miss the kids and the school immensely. Christina Ellacott, who has been working on and off at the school for more than 30 years echoed Mr Ralph’s praise of MSHS. “The professionalism of the people we work with is something I have loved about this school,” she said. “Particularly long serving teacher aides and support staff in the school who don’t often get

recognised - they’re the backbone of the school that help us do our job every day. “It’s their knowledge and of the community and their ties to the the kids that help support teachers in what they do too.” Ms Ellacott said the school sees so many long serving teachers because they become part of the community. “A lot of teachers recognise that they can contribute something at the school but also that the school helps them contribute back to the community,” she said. “That’s a testament to the community focussed foundation at MSHS and is a huge part of why I have stayed working here for so long.” The open invitation farewell will be held next Wednesday, December 12, at the Mareeba Leagues Club and will run from 4pm-6pm with nibbles provided.

Charity night raises $2200

The curtains closed on the Mareeba Theatre Group’s Take a Chance on Me production over the weekend, and it’s safe to say it was once again a resounding success. The Mareeba Theatre Group’s annual show has been an integral part of the Mareeba community for more than 25 years, and it’s the not-for-profit organisation’s willingness to give back that makes it such a wonderful initiative. Their first show was a fundraiser for a fellow not-for-profit organisation of their choosing,

a tradition that aims to help organisations that may not have the same opportunity to raise funding similar to that of the Mareeba Theatre Group. This year’s fundraising efforts went towards the Mareeba Wetlands, of which the MTG were able to raise $2200. That caps off a couple of big weeks for the Mareeba Wetlands, as they recently played host to a White Ribbon Day event. The event was a collaborative one between Mareeba Community Housing Company, Mulungu and Forever Wild.

Big success for small school MOUNT Molloy State School was recognised on the state stage recently as they took out the Showcase Award for Excellence in Community Engagement. Held in Brisbane, the Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools is an annual event which highlights exceptional practices from educational institutions that significantly improve outcomes for students, with Mount Molloy’s submission being centred around ‘Growing our community’. Mount Molloy State School’s initiative which garnered due recognition was their kitchen garden program that has been a resounding success since its inception in 2012. Starting as a humble vegetable patch, the kitchen garden program has established itself as a core practice at the school,

so much so the school has seen a direct increase in enrolments and attendance as a result of the initiative. MMSS Principal Janene Harrison said it is a great honour to be recognised on a state level for excellence in education. “We have worked very hard to involve the community with the school and value what they can add to our students learning,” she said. “This award definitely reinforces to us all that small schools can do big things. “Rural and remote schools are still able to offer a strong foundation to build an exceptional education which allows students to succeed.” Ms Harrison said cooking and gardening is a great way for people to interact and communicate together.

“The community has loved being able to interact with our students and Friday morning classes have become a social outing for those in the community,” she said. “Monthly craft mornings are held at the school with strong attendance from our local and surrounding CWA ladies, where they help the students to make loofah soaps and beeswax wraps, cards and other saleable items that the students sell at their market stall.” “Also, once a term the students run “Pumpin Pizzas” which is their very own restaurant, an event Ms Harrison described as a highly anticipated SUCCESS: Mount Molloy State School’s kitchen garden one within the community. program has been a resounding success since its inception. Ms Harrison said the program is one that provides students with real life experiences duces great results. Wind Farm seeks locals to manage $200,000 community fund As the 180MW Mount Emerald Wind Farm nears completion, project developer Ratch Australia Corporation is following through on its commitment to a $200,000 per year Community Benefit Fund to sponsor projects or initiatives that improve the quality of life for local commu-

nities. The company this week called for Expressions of Interest for three local volunteers to join an Advisory Committee responsible for administering the Fund which will operate for 25 years. Ratch Community Engage-

ment Facilitator Kim Forde said the Advisory Committee would assist Ratch in assessing applications for funding which would make a positive and lasting contribution to the region. “Ratch has shared a long relationship with communities on the Atherton Tablelands, we val-

ue their support and we’re committed to making the regions in which we work healthier, stronger, sustainable and more liveable,” Ms Forde said. “We’re calling on people living within the Mareeba and Tablelands Council areas to participate in the administration

of the Mount Emerald Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund so that right money goes to the right people from not-for-profit groups and clubs to associations and individuals working hard to make a difference.” Ms Forde said anyone wishing to join the Committee should

make a one-page submission to communityfund@ratchaustralia.com by 20 December 2018. “If you share my love for the Atherton Tablelands then please raise your hand, this is an opportunity to make our great region even greater,” Ms Forde said.

Ingredients

1. Place the instant coffee in the hot water and stir. Let cool for 5 minutes. 2. Beat heavy whipping cream until stiff peaks form. Chill. 3. Mix icing sugar and marscarpone/cream cheese with a hand mixer until smooth. Mix in vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon of the coffee. Add up to the entire amount of coffee, depending on how strong you want your tiramisu. Mix in vanilla. 4. Fold whipped cream into coffee mixture gently. Place the tiramisu in a ziploc bag that is fitted with a large round or 1M tip. 5. Pipe a small amount the bottom of each of 4 serving glasses op the layer with a dusting of cocoa powder. Continue layering the tiramisu and cocoa powder. 6. Once you get to the top layer, grate the semi-sweet baking chocolate over the tops of the serving dishes (instead of the dusting of cocoa powder). This gives a sweet first taste instead of being bitter from the unsweetened cocoa. Chill, covered, in the fridge until ready to serve.

Mareeba Tennis finals

John Collins and John Mark were recognised for their commitment to the Mareeba Golf Club recently as they were made life members.

Golfers receive life membership The Mareeba Golf Club Inc held its Annual General Meeting on Saturday November 24 and announced that the two most senior members of the Club, John Mark and John Collins, had been made Life Members. John Mark joined the Club in 1949 while John Collins joined in 1961. John Mark was Treasurer from 1962 to 1967 and John Col-

lins was President from 1986 to 1990. When they started playing the putting surfaces were made of sand and sump oil while the fairways were bare for most of the year. In 1962 two grass greens were planted and over time twelve holes were developed with irrigation. In 1989 the Mareeba Shire Council provided a grant of

$30,000.00 worth of work and John Collins oversaw the construction of a further six holes with the assistance of voluntary labour provided by the members. The 18 Hole course was officially opened in April 1990 when three hundred and fifty players took part in the competition. The two Johns met in Dimbulah in 1950 when John Collins was a Junior Clerk at the Dimbu-

lah Butchering Company while John Mark was a Senior Clerk at the Mareeba Accounting Firm of Geo H O'Donnell. The firm used to visit the Dimbulah business once a month. Both members still play golf regularly and expressed their sincere appreciation for the honour awarded to them at the meeting.

The Atherton Senior Roosters have opened their new season with a strong roll up for the club’s first training session last Thursday night. Second year head coach Graham Clark addressed the 2019 squad of players from all three grades at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium. After the initial welcome backs and introductions it was straight down to business. There were plenty of familiar

faces amongst the group, as well as several new ones in the mix. Graham Clark said he was very pleased with the first up effort and attendance. “Everyone is keen to keep moving forward and build on what we put in place in 2018,” Clark said. “Strong player numbers and attendance builds confidence through the club and keeps a positive feeling in the group. We are looking to have all grades

playing finals football next year and it all starts on the training paddock.” The Roosters pre-season training will continue at 6pm on Tuesday and Thursday through till December 20 before breaking for the Christmas period. Two pre-season trial games are booked for the Roosters in March followed by their Cairns District Rugby League 2019 premiership opener with Mareeba at home on March 30.

Chance to impress at NPL trial THREE of Mareeba’s best young footballing talents are currently in Coffs Harbour testing themselves against some of the best players in the country as part of a trial with the Under 18’s Central Coast Mariners NPL side. Tyler Ius (15), Dean Alterio (15) and Serg Battistin (16) left Mareeba last Friday and will be away for more than a week as they take part in a gruelling training and playing regiment. All three players are ecstatic with the opportunity to trial and are confident they can rise to the challenge. “This is a great chance to see where you stand on the national stage,” Tyler said. “This provides experience on an elite level, so all three of us want to make sure we take the opportunity with both hands.” Serg echoed Tyler’s comments, noting that a trial with a professional organisation like the

Mariners is a dream come true. “This trial will give all of us more of an understanding of what goes in to being a professional footballer,” he said. “It will definitely be a big jump in competition but it is something we are prepared for. “It is our dream to pursue a career in football so it’s important we have these tough tests.” Deane also alluded to what it means to him to have the opportunity to trial. “This means so much, it’s recognition of all the hard work and training I’ve put in and I’m keen to show the coaches down there what the players from the country have to offer,” he said. Tyler, Serg and Deane said they wanted to thank their parents and Colin Junna for making all of this possible. Tyler’s father Peter, who will be accompanying the boys on the trip, believes this will be a great

experience for the players and will benefit their development immensely. “I know these boys are made of the right stuff to go far with their football, however they just need to be put in the right environment,” he said. “This trip means they will learn from elite coaches and it will improve their game significantly.

“It will be a baptism of fire; however there aren’t a lot of pathways for rural players so it’s good to see some of Mareeba’s best talent get an opportunity to display their talent and I’m confident they’ll do well.” Mr Ius said if they impress, the players may be asked to come back and take part in the Central Coast Mariner’s 12 week NPL program.

Win puts Atherton in third position

Bowler Dylan Pettingill in full flight for Atherton.

Atherton pulled off a gutsy Cricket Far North win against Rovers at Endeavour Park on Saturday to sneak into third position on the ladder. Sent out to field in sweltering conditions, Atherton's bowlers worked hard, restricting Rovers to 66 runs at the halfway mark. Rovers upped the tempo with wickets in hand and doubled that run rate, taking full advantage of the small boundary to finish their innings 8-204. Atherton used 7 bowlers with Dylan Pettingill, Brendan Lynch and Logan Poggioli all returning tidy figures, and the spinners Dan Parnell 3-38, Michael Salerno 2-61, Mason Blaney 1-18 and Tom Boorman 1-30 picking up

wickets in their spells. Dan Parnell led the run chase, taking out top-score honours again with 71 off 63 balls. Ethan Sanderson supported Dan, rotating the strike to form an 86 run partnership. Fred Pittorino 48no and Michael Salerno 32no used their experience and maturity to bat the team to a 4 wicket win in the 37th over. Atherton are at home to competition leaders Mulgrave this Saturday December 8. Result: Atherton 6-208 (D Parnell 71, F Pittorino 48no, M Salerno 32no, E Sanderson 20) Def. Rovers 8-204 (D Parnell 3-38, M Salerno 2-61, M Blaney 1-18, T Boorman 1-30)
